In this paper, we reconsider the large- a asymptotic expansion of the Hurwitz zeta function ζ ( s , a ). New representations for the remainder term of the asymptotic expansion are found and used to obtain sharp and realistic error bounds. Applications to the asymptotic expansions of the polygamma functions, the gamma function, the Barnes G -function and the s -derivative of the Hurwitz zeta function ζ ( s , a ) are provided. A detailed discussion on the sharpness of our error bounds is also given.

Abstract The Repeat Expansion Diseases, a large group of human diseases that includes the fragile X-related disorders (FXDs) and Huntington's disease (HD), all result from expansion of a disease-specific microsatellite via a mechanism that is not fully understood. We have previously shown that mismatch repair (MMR) proteins are required for expansion in a mouse model of the FXDs, but that the FANCD2 and FANCI associated nuclease 1 (FAN1), a component of the Fanconi anemia (FA) DNA repair pathway, is protective. FAN1’s nuclease activity has been reported to be dispensable for protection against expansion in an HD cell model. However, we show here that in a FXD mouse model a point mutation in the nuclease domain of FAN1 has the same effect on expansion as a null mutation. Furthermore, we show that FAN1 and another nuclease, EXO1, have an additive effect in protecting against MSH3-dependent expansions. Lastly, we show that the loss of FANCD2, a vital component of the Fanconi anemia DNA repair pathway, has no effect on expansions. Thus, FAN1 protects against MSH3-dependent expansions without diverting the expansion intermediates into the canonical FA pathway and this protection depends on FAN1 having an intact nuclease domain.

In this work we describe an analytic method able to give the multiplication table(s) of the set(s) involved in an S-expansion process (with either resonance or 0-resonant-reduction) for reaching a target Lie (super)algebra from a starting one,after having properly chosen the partitions over subspaces of the considered (super)algebras. This analytic method gives us a simple set of expressions to find the subset decomposition of the set(s) involved in the process. Then, we use the information coming from both the initial (super)algebra and the target one for reaching the multiplication table(s) of the mentioned set(s). We also give some interesting examples of application which check and corroborate our analytic procedure andgeneralize some result already presented in the literature

This thesis is about a new methd to perform the S-expansion procedure and studies in extended supergravites. In the present work, the concept of zero-reduction has been extended reproducing a generalized Inönü-Wigner contraction. This involves an innite abelian semigroup and the removal of an ideal subalgebra. We refer about the use of theorem VII.2 of the reference [20] which serves to construct the topological invariant of a respective S-expanded algebra from another of which the bilinear form is known, therefore is an extension and generalization of the mentioned theorem. This procedure allows to develop the dynamics and construct the Lagrangians of several theories. This work reproduces the results already presented in the literature, concerning the generalized Inönü-Wigner contraction, and also gives some new features. Moreover, it gives a connection between the contraction processes and the expansion methods introduced in [17], which was an open question already mentioned in [12]. Also is shows one of the interesting applications, which is to obtain a particular hidden Maxwell superalgebra underlying supergravity in four dimensions. Thus we have written the hidden Maxwell superalgebra in the Maurer-Cartan formalism, and then, we have considered the parametrization of the 3-form A(3) in terms of 1-forms, in order to show the way in which the trivial boundary contribution in four dimensions, dA(3), can be naturally extended by considering particular contributions to the structure of the extra fermionic generator, appearing in the hidden Maxwell superalgebra. These extensions contain terms which involve the cosmological constant. Interestingly, the presence of these terms depends strictly on the form of the extra fermionic generators appearing in this hidden extension of D = 4 supergravity. Besides, we have reviewed some concepts of the S-expansion. We show especially, how S-expansion procedure aects the geometry of a Lie group: was found how the magnitude of a vector change and the angle between two vectors. About the kind of algebra, after apply an S-expansion, it is a non-simple Lie algebra. Then, considering resonance and reduction, we built an analytic method able to give us the multiplication table(s) of the set(s) involved in an Sexpansion process for reaching a target Lie (super)algebra from a starting one, after having chosen properly the partitions over subspaces of the considered (super)algebras. Furthermore, we study in the context of ungauged supergravities, the symmetry under the kinetic part in the action and the realization to a global symmetry group G. Moreover, we show the use of the solution generating technique. As a rst step in the unnished research we work with the AdS metric with the global group G2(2),which it is the global symmetry group of the 3D description of N = 2 supergravity coupled to a vector multiplet [13], where we found the charges. Considering that a solution with cosmological constant is always gauged in extended supergravities [36], it is planned to investigate the applicability of the solution generating technique on gauged theories asymptotically at, i.e AdS metric.

This thesis explores the expansion of British television in the 1950s and 1960s and its relationship to social and cultural change. During this period, television developed into an industry and mass medium and this coincided with a cultural shift from a seemingly consensual society of post-war austerity to a society characterised by fragmentation, individualism and consumerism. By combining a re-examination of existing histories of British television with a discussion of television programmes and sociological theory, this thesis explores the complex relationship between the expansion of television and that social and cultural change. The thesis shows how television represented these changes, and how it presented competing discourses about consumer culture in a range of programmes including action adventure series, pop music and women's programmes. It also demonstrates how television promoted class and cultural conflict in its individual programmes such as situation comedies and dramas, and through juxtaposition of high and low cultural vales, themes and forms in its mixed programme schedule. By looking at issues such as intimacy, performance, authenticity and sociability, the thesis argues that television promoted its own status as an increasingly centralised cultural form. It proposes that television established social categories which became embedded and naturalised over time, and this created the potential to define social experience. The thesis therefore concludes that the examination of the expansion of television in the 1950s and 1960s is of importance for understanding the operation of media power today.

As globalization increases integration, a new playing field is emerging which is driving the need for operational efficiencies and alignment of complementary capabilities among countries to build sustainable models and integrated offerings. As demands increase, companies are turning to effective project management as means to control operations and countries are increasing the amount of mega projects to boost their competitiveness and global footprint. Given the scale, complexity, political nature, multicultural makeup, and high level of visibility; mega projects rely on successful stakeholder management to effectively manage its operational, tactical, and strategic levels to execute their mission. This paper examines the success drivers of mega projects and presents an in depth stakeholder assessment of the Panama Canal Expansion mega project to identify the perceived value to its stakeholder community. The stakeholder categories include: the Panama Canal Authority, subcontractors executing the expansion project, customers of the canal in Panama and U.S., as well as the communities surrounding the Panama Canal and ports in the U.S. East Coast. The conclusion of this paper captures the relationship between the effective stakeholder engagement from the Panama Canal Authority, the perceived value of the Panamanian stakeholders, and compares it to U.S. based mega projects being executed simultaneously to allow the U.S. East Coast ports to accommodate increased cargo volumes.

Esta dissertação discute o hibridismo presente nos livros-objeto infantis contemporâneos, na tentativa de evidenciar como os fundamentos da natureza híbrida da linguagem do Design e a experiência intersemiótica revelam-se como interações presentes em enredos multissensoriais, expandindo as narrativas encontradas no livro-objeto infantil. O olhar sobre o ato de ler não se restringe à decifração de letras grafadas em qualquer que seja o suporte, mas se expande para a absorção das representatividades estabelecidas. O design de livros influencia a leitura não apenas em aspectos funcionais, mas também simbólicos e, por isso, pode ser considerado um mediador de leitura, que conduz o leitor em sua jornada. A dissertação apresenta a leitura de dois livros-objeto infantis selecionados nas obras de Kveta Pacovská e Roger Mello, designers/ilustradores/ artistas plásticos reconhecidos internacionalmente com o prêmio Hans Christian Andersen. Buscou-se verificar os processos com os quais são ativadas e ampliadas as suas histórias no hibridismo dos processos narrativos. Para isso, a dissertação se apoiou na concepção do híbrido como categoria analítica proposta por Braida (2012).
This thesis discusses the hybridism in the contemporary children s Object Books, in an attempt to elucidate how the hybrid nature of the design language and of the intersemiotic experience, reveal the interactions in the multisensory stories, expanding the narratives found in children s Object Books. A look at the act of reading is not restricted to the deciphering of written letters – in whatever sort of support, but in the absorption of established representativeness. Book design influences that reading, not only in functional aspects, but also in symbolic ones, and that is why it can be considered as a reading-mediator, driving the reader through his journey. The thesis presents the reading of two children s object-books chosen from the works from Kveta Pacovská and Roger Mello, both internationally recognized designers/illustrators and plastic artists awarded with the Hans Christian Andersen prize. In these books, the progress from which the histories were activated and amplified in the hybridism of the narrative process was accounted. The theses is based on the notion of hybrid as an analytical category as proposed by Braida (2012).

Sweden is a country with close to zero fossil-fuel dependency in their electricity generation. The Swedish government has established specific goals that the Swedish electricity system should consist solely of renewable energy, as well as achieve zero net emissions in electricity generation within 25 years. To reach these goals, Sweden have been investing avidly in wind power over the last 15 years, making them one of Europe’s leading investors in the technology. However, this has started public debate on the topic as humans-, as well as flora and fauna, are affected negatively by the turbines. This paper investigates public benefits and costs of further onshore wind power expansion in Sweden. The focus is to analyse if an increased onshore wind power expansion can cease imports of fossil-fuelled electricity, Sweden’s main source of fossil-fuel dependent electricity. Furthermore, the aim is to determine if a wind power expansion of magnitude to eliminate these imports of fossil-fuelled electricity is of public benefit or not. A regression model gives support for the conclusion that an increased wind power production diminishes imports of fossil-fuelled electricity. Moreover, the magnitude of wind power production necessary to completely eliminate these imports are combined with public benefits and costs for onshore wind power to evaluate the socioeconomic value of the expansion. This is evaluated using the present-value method and included in a cost-benefit analysis. The results suggest that an increased onshore wind power expansion is of public benefit if most added electricity from the expansion can replace electricity generated from greenhouse gas-intense facilities abroad, and thus mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, if less added electricity from the wind power expansion is used to replace production from greenhouse gas-intense facilities, public benefits decrease whilst subject to the same costs. Moreover, if production from the onshore wind power expansion solely mitigates the greenhouse gases from Sweden’s imports of fossil-fuelled electricity, public costs exceed the public benefits, and the total socioeconomic value of the investment is negative. The conclusion of this paper suggests that a further onshore wind power expansion is of public benefit if its production is guaranteed to mitigate substantial amounts of greenhouse gases through exported electricity.

Este trabalho consiste em um estudo das mudanças sociais nas práticas educativas da comunidade de Nova Vida, formada por famílias de pequenos agricultores e pescadores e localizada no município de Barcarena, Amazônia Oriental (PA). O trabalho articula os conceitos de cultura e processo educativo para desenvolver uma análise das relações sócio-espaciais desta comunidade, conformadas tanto pelo contexto ambiental da floresta amazônica quanto pelas transformações determinadas pelos deslocamentos compulsórios sofridos por suas famílias e promovidos por empreendimentos transnacionais ligados à produção de caulim. Isso implica apreender as antigas e as novas práticas educativas da comunidade, promovidas tanto pelas mudanças de contexto ambiental que lhe são impostas, quanto por sua inserção em um campo mais amplo de mobilização e organização sócio-política críticas aos empreendimentos transnacionais na região. Para realizar esta análise, assumimos como fio condutor do estudo dos dois processos de deslocamento compulsório vividos pela comunidade, impostos pela empresa de capital transnacional Pará Pigmentos S/A, com a anuência do estado do Pará e de órgãos do Governo Federal. Assim, a questão central deste trabalho pode ser traduzida na seguinte questão: Como as dinâmicas territoriais resultantes da presença da empresa mineradora e dos deslocamentos da comunidade instituiram novos saberes e fazeres, novos agentes, processos de ensino e aprendizagem, conteúdos e objetivos pedagógicos para a citada comunidade? Para responder a esta questão, adotamos o método etnográfico, a pesquisa documental, as entrevistas abertas e as histórias de vida, dando ênfase à identificação dos atores sociais, dos diferentes saberes que vão se impondo por meio das mudanças sociais provocadas pelos deslocamentos e dos modelos de ensino-aprendizagem que vão sendo impostos, propostos e inventados. O trabalho inicia com a contextualização da comunidade na dinâmica de reestruturação capitalista em curso no município de Barcarena, posteriormente apresenta-se a organização social e cultura da comunidade, seguida da descrição dos dois processo de deslocamento sofridos pela comunidade e seus impactos no saberes e fazeres, culminando com uma análise da situação atual da comunidade e seus aprendizados como sujeito político.
This paper work is a study of social changes in educational practices of the community of Nova Vida, made up of small family farmers and fishermen, located in Barcarena, Eastern Amazonia (PA). The work articulates the concepts of culture and educational process to develop an analysis of socio-spatial relations of this community, shaped by both the environmental context of the Amazon forest as the determined by changes in the compulsory relocation suffered by their families and promoted by transnational ventures linked to production of kaolin. This means seizing the old and new educational practices of the community, promoted both by changes in environmental context that are imposed, and for its insertion in a broader field of mobilization and organization socio-political critiques of transnational ventures in the region. In this analysis, we assumed as a conducting wire a study of two cases of compulsory displacement experienced by the community, imposed by the company of transnational capital Pigments Para S/A, with the concurrence of the state of Para and Federal Government agencies. Thus, the crux of this work can be translated into the following question: How territorial dynamics resulting from the presence of the mining company and the displacements of the community instituted new knowledge and procedures, new agents, processes of teaching and learning, pedagogical content and objectives to the cited community? To answer this question, we adopted the ethnographic method, documentary research, open interviews and the life history, emphasizing the identification of social actors, the different knowledge that will be imposing through by social changes caused by displacement and models teaching and learning that are being taxes, proposed and invented. The work begins with the context of the community in the dynamics of capitalist restructuring in Barcarena then presents the social organization and cultural of the community, followed by the description of both the process of displacement suffered by the community and its impact on knowledge and practices culminating with an analysis of the current situation of the community and their learning as a political subject.

This research has developed several models and methodologies with the aim of improving the accuracy and applicability of reliability predictions for complex repairable systems. A repairable system is usually defined as one that will be repaired to recover its functions after each failure. Physical assets such as machines, buildings, vehicles are often repairable. Optimal maintenance strategies require the prediction of the reliability of complex repairable systems accurately. Numerous models and methods have been developed for predicting system reliability. After an extensive literature review, several limitations in the existing research and needs for future research have been identified. These include the follows: the need for an effective method to predict the reliability of an asset with multiple preventive maintenance intervals during its entire life span; the need for considering interactions among failures of components in a system; and the need for an effective method for predicting reliability with sparse or zero failure data. In this research, the Split System Approach (SSA), an Analytical Model for Interactive Failures (AMIF), the Extended SSA (ESSA) and the Proportional Covariate Model (PCM), were developed by the candidate to meet the needs identified previously, in an effective manner. These new methodologies/models are expected to rectify the identified limitations of current models and significantly improve the accuracy of the reliability prediction of existing models for repairable systems. The characteristics of the reliability of a system will alter after regular preventive maintenance. This alternation makes prediction of the reliability of complex repairable systems difficult, especially when the prediction covers a number of imperfect preventive maintenance actions over multiple intervals during the asset's lifetime. The SSA uses a new concept to address this issue effectively and splits a system into repaired and unrepaired parts virtually. SSA has been used to analyse system reliability at the component level and to address different states of a repairable system after single or multiple preventive maintenance activities over multiple intervals. The results obtained from this investigation demonstrate that SSA has an excellent ability to support the making of optimal asset preventive maintenance decisions over its whole life. It is noted that SSA, like most existing models, is based on the assumption that failures are independent of each other. This assumption is often unrealistic in industrial circumstances and may lead to unacceptable prediction errors. To ensure the accuracy of reliability prediction, interactive failures were considered. The concept of interactive failure presented in this thesis is a new variant of the definition of failure. The candidate has made several original contributions such as introducing and defining related concepts and terminologies, developing a model to analyse interactive failures quantitatively and revealing that interactive failure can be either stable or unstable. The research results effectively assist in avoiding unstable interactive relationship in machinery during its design phase. This research on interactive failures pioneers a new area of reliability prediction and enables the estimation of failure probabilities more precisely. ESSA was developed through an integration of SSA and AMIF. ESSA is the first effective method to address the reliability prediction of systems with interactive failures and with multiple preventive maintenance actions over multiple intervals. It enhances the capability of SSA and AMIF. PCM was developed to further enhance the capability of the above methodologies/models. It addresses the issue of reliability prediction using both failure data and condition data. The philosophy and procedure of PCM are different from existing models such as the Proportional Hazard Model (PHM). PCM has been used successfully to investigate the hazard of gearboxes and truck engines. The candidate demonstrated that PCM had several unique features: 1) it automatically tracks the changing characteristics of the hazard of a system using symptom indicators; 2) it estimates the hazard of a system using symptom indicators without historical failure data; 3) it reduces the influence of fluctuations in condition monitoring data on hazard estimation. These newly developed methodologies/models have been verified using simulations, industrial case studies and laboratory experiments. The research outcomes of this research are expected to enrich the body of knowledge in reliability prediction through effectively addressing some limitations of existing models and exploring the area of interactive failures.

AbstractDesigned for aeronautical and automotive applications, the split sleeve cold expansion process is used to improve the fatigue life of bolted metallic parts. Although its application has been well tested on aluminum assemblies, hard metal applications are still being studied. This paper presents experimental results of double bolt joint assemblies under double shear fatigue tests after stacked split sleeve cold expansion. The behaviors of two sizes of assemblies with different degrees of expansion are investigated. S-N curves are the main indicators of this study but thermal aspects are also investigated to observe fretting in the specimens as bolts are preloaded. Bolt tension is a major parameter in assembly regarding fatigue life. Interference between those two phenomena is at the heart of this paper. The first results show that stacked cold expansion has a negative effect on mechanical performances, as it deteriorates the fatigue life of the assembly. However, an examination of these results provides a coherent explanation for the loss of performance that occurs.

AbstractTransitions into precariousness and labour market exclusion in late professional career need to be understood from the perspective of individual biographies unfolding in relation to historical developments, social structures and social changes.The generation born in the 1950’s in Europe, now nearing retirement, has lived through periods of economic affluence and welfare state expansion, but also of macro-economic shocks, deindustrialization, and neo-liberal slimming of public social structures. These changes were concurrent with accelerated digitalization and restructuring of work organizations.This chapter illustrates transitions into unemployment and precariousness among older men in the context of economic downturn and organizational restructuring in a sector particularly exposed to the effects of neo-liberal globalization- the metal industry. We go on to show how in two different organizational-institutional realities countries, such as Portugal and Sweden these workers are exposed to different mechanisms that paved the way out of secure employment into insecure employment and precarious positions in the labour market.

This case study examines the potential for expansion of blackberry export market and identifies several key barriers: low volume of production for export, phytosanitary and other obstacles constraining production at scale, lack of support services from the public sector, and lack of an organizational presence for producers seeking alternative markets. While production of blackberry is relatively high, and markets and an export window exist, Ecuadors industry needs vision and leadership for a viable export industry to emerge.

The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.

Electric Roadways (ERs) or Dynamic Wireless Charging (DWC) lanes offer an alternative dynamic and wireless charging method that has the potential of giving electric vehicles (EV) limitless range while they are moving. Heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) are expected to be early adopters of the DWC technology due to the higher benefits offered to these vehicles that are traveling on fixed routes. The goal of this project was to assess the feasibility of ERs in Indiana and design a test bed for in-road EV charging technologies. The most suitable locations for implementing DWC lanes were identified on interstates that are characterized by high truck traffic. Using I-65 S as a case study, it was found that DWC can be economically feasible for the developer and competitive for the EV owner at high and medium future projections of EV market penetration levels. However, the existing substations are unlikely to serve future DWC needs for HDVs. Thus, consideration should be given to substation expansion to support EVs as market penetration expands. Implementing the DWC technology on interstates and jointly with major pavement preservation activities is recommended. Large scale deployment can significantly reduce the high initial investment. Renewable energy resources (solar and wind) deployed in the vicinity of ERs can reduce the electricity costs and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Anaplasmosis an arthropod-born disease of cattle caused by the rickettsia Anaplasma marginale and is an impediment to efficient production of healthy livestock in both Israel and the United States. Currently the only effective vaccines are derived from the blood of infected cattle. The risk of widespread transmission of both known and newly emergent pathogens has prevented licensure of live blood-based vaccines in the U.S. and is a major concern for their continued use in Israel. Consequently development of a safe, effective vaccine is a high priority. In this collaborative project we focused on two approaches to vaccine development. The first focused o n improving antigen delivery to livestock and specifically examined how DNA vaccines could be improved to enhance priming and expansion of the immune response. This research resulted in development and testing of two novel vaccine delivery systems--one that targeted antigen spread among dendritic cells (the key cell in priming immune responses and a follow-on construct that also specifically targeted antigen to the endosomal-lysosomal compartment the processing organelle within the dendritic cell that directs vaccine antigen to the MHC class ll-CD4* T cell priming pathway). The optimized construct targeting vaccine antigen to the dendritic cell MHC class II pathway was tested for ability to prime A. marginale specific immune responses in outbred cattle. The results demonstrated both statistically significant effects of priming with a single immunization, continued expansion of the primary immune response including development of high affinity lgG antibodies and rapid recall of the memory response following antigen challenge. This portion of the study represented a significant advance in vaccine delivery for livestock. Importantly the impact of these studies is not limited to A. marginale a s the targeting motifs are optimized for cattle and can be adapted to other cattle vaccinations by inserting a relevant pathogen-specific antigen. The second approach (which represented an addition to the project for which approval was requested as part of the first annual report) was a comparative approach between A . marginale and the Israel A . centrale vaccines train. This addition was requested as studies on Major Surface Protein( MSP)- 2 have shown that this antigen is highly antigenically variable and presented solely as a "static vaccine" antigen does not give cross-strain immunity. In contrast A. . centrale is an effective vaccine which Kimron Veterinary institute has used in the field in Israel for over 50 years. Taking advantage of this expertise, a broad comparison of wild type A. marginale and vaccine strain was initiated. These studies revealed three primary findings: i) use of the vaccine is associated with superinfection, but absence of clinical disease upon superinfection with A. marginale; ii) the A. centrale vaccine strain is not only less virulent but transmission in competent in Dermacentor spp. ticks; and iii) some but not all MSPs are conserved in basic orthologous structure but there are significant polymorphisms among the strains. These studies clearly indicated that there are statistically significant differences in biology (virulence and transmission) and provide a clear path for mapping of biology with the genomes. Based on these findings, we initiated complete genome sequencing of the Israel vaccine strain (although not currently funded by BARD) and plant to proceed with a comparative genomics approach using already sequenced wild-type A. marginale. These findings and ongoing collaborative research tie together filed vaccine experience with new genomic data, providing a new approach to vaccine development against a complex pathogen.

The Houston Ship Channel is one of the busiest deep -draft navigation channels in the United States and must be able to accommodate larger vessel dimensions over time. The U.S. Army Engineer District, Galveston (SWG) requested the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory perform hydrodynamic and sediment modeling of proposed modifications along the Houston Ship Channel. The modeling results are necessary to provide data for salinity and sediment transport analysis a s well as ship simulation studies. SWG provided a project alternative that includes channel widening, deepening, and bend easing. After initial analysis, two additional channel widths in the bay portion of the Houston Ship Channel were requested for testing. The results of these additional channel widths are presented in this report. The model shows that the salinity does not vary significantly due to the channel modifications being considered for this project. Changes in salinity are 2 parts per thousand or less. The tidal prism increases by less than 2% when the project is included, and the tidal amplitudes increase by no more than 0.01 meter. The residual velocity vectors do vary in and around areas where project modifications are made.
