Abstract This electronic document is a “live” template. Ocean navigation is a long-distance cross ocean navigation. There are three kinds of ocean routes in common use: great circle route, rhumb line route and mixed route. The great circle route is usually used when ships are sailing in the ocean, but sometimes in the mid latitude sea area, the rhumb line route is a choice in the mid latitude sea area. Combined with the calculation of a navigation example, this paper makes some analysis on the selection of ocean routes in mid latitude sea area, illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of these three ocean routes with data, and draws a conclusion on how to choose the routes.

While public transit network design has a wide literature, the study of line planning and route generation under uncertainty is not so well covered. Such uncertainty is present in planning for emerging transit technologies or operating models in which demand data is largely unavailable to make predictions on. In such circumstances, this paper proposes a sequential route generation process in which an operator periodically expands the route set and receives ridership feedback. Using this sensor loop, a reinforcement learning-based route generation methodology is proposed to support line planning for emerging technologies. The method makes use of contextual bandit problems to explore different routes to invest in while optimizing the operating cost or demand served. Two experiments are conducted. They (1) prove that the algorithm is better than random choice; and (2) show good performance with a gap of 3.7% relative to a heuristic solution to an oracle policy.

This paper aims to analyze the impact of the China-Laos railway on the export trade from Thailand and China. This will enable Thai export traders to understand the new transportation route formed by the railway and improve the trade volume and competitiveness of Thai products through this route. The author firstly finds out to which provinces Thailand's products are mainly exported to China and their individual export volume through literature review. Then, summarize the main export routes of Thai products to these provinces. These routes are river transportation, land transportation and sea transportation, The China-Laos railway is mainly used to transport goods. a new transport route will emerge after the completion of the China-Laos railway. After that, secondary data method is used to determine the driven factors of route selection. Finally, qualitative analysis is used to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the new route and other routes base on driven factors. This new route will have some advantages in some factors, this paper points out what trade industry is suitable for this route, these can provide some reference for Thai trade exporters. In the future, this route can be used to increase Thailand's export trade volume and develop some trade on the railway along the line. Transmission line route reflects the geospatial constraints on the grid. Environmental factors affecting the power transmission line route design are diverse and complex. This paper studies the method based on GIS (Geographic Information System) and Dijkstra algorithm. Establish environmental factors hierarchical model of transmission line route design using IAHP and gridded map and obtain each grid’s weight. Take into account weight of each grid’s environmental factors and number of the corner in order to build the branch weights of Dijkstra algorithm. After that the optimal route can be obtained using Dijkstra algorithm.

This paper describes the problems in route optimization of two-phase pipelines. Combining the hydraulic calculation with route optimization theory, this paper establishes an automatic route optimization model and adopts the general genetic algorithm (gGA) and steady-state genetic algorithm (ssGA) to solve the model, respectively, gets the optimal route, and discusses the influence of parameters setting to the result. This algorithm was applied in determining pipelines routes in coalbed methane gathering and transporting system in Shanxi Province, China. The result shows that the algorithm is feasible, which improves the hydraulic properties by reducing the pressure drop along the line while the pipeline length is still acceptable.

In most of transportation literature, users are assumed to be perfectly rational in minimizing their own travel costs or perceived travel costs. However, users may not be perfectly rational in implementing their choices in reality. There exists a kind of boundedly rational users, that is, oblivious users. These oblivious users make their route choices by simple criteria, for example, selecting the shortest (or the most direct) route only based on physical distance or simply following routes recommended by a GPS system. This paper investigates how the existence of oblivious users affects the equilibrium bus line choice behavior in a public transit system. And we propose a method to design a more realistic system.

Transmission route selection needs to determine in order to have the best route for the transmission line. This paper presents a few alternative transmission line routes together by using cost path analysis application, minimizing and avoiding propose new located tower in landslide hazard area. The conventional route planning method usually only take into considerations of topographical such as gradient and curvature. This method unable to sustain the environment. This study can take into consideration of many factors that related to Environmental Sensitive Area (ESA) such as prone to landslide area, forestry area, land cover and land use. Different influence factor that assign to the weightage will resulted to different output of the suitability map. This study will have used nine Environmental Sensitive Area (ESA) factors, and using three difference influence factors that will optimize the result of the suitability map.

The U.S. military considers Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) a critical component of the future for two primary reasons - they are effective force multipliers and a significant risk-reducing agent. As the military's technology improves and UUVs become a reliable mission asset, the vehicle's ability to make intelligent decisions will be crucial to future operations. The thesis develops various algorithms to solve the UUV Mission-Planning Problem (UUVMPP), where the UUV must choose which tasks to perform in which sequence in a stochastic mission environment. The objective is to find the most profitable way to execute tasks with restrictions of total mission time, energy, time-restricted areas, and weather conditions. Since the UUV accumulates navigation error over time while maneuvering underwater, the UUV must occasionally halt operations to re-orient itself via a navigation fix. While a navigation fix takes time and increases the likelihood of exposing the vehicle's position to potential adversaries, a reduction in navigation error allows the UUV to perform tasks and navigate with a greater amount of certainty. The algorithms presented in this thesis successfully incorporate navigation fixes into the mission-planning process. The thesis considers Mixed-Integer Programming, Exact Dynamic Programming, and an Approximate Dynamic Programming technique known as Rollout to determine the optimal a priori route that meets operational constraints with a specified probability. The thesis then shows how these formulations can solve and re-solve the UUVMPP on-line. In particular, the Rollout Algorithm finds task route solutions on average 96% of the optimal solution a priori and 98% of the optimal solution on-line compared to exact algorithms; with a significant reduction in computation run time, the Rollout Algorithm permits the solving of increasingly complex mission scenarios.

The subject of this thesis is the design and implementation of a client-server applications for collecting GPS data using a smartphone with Android OS. The system is used for real-time monitoring and recording vehicle’s movement on a server, where the data are adapted to the real road. This thesis is a continuation of the project DoAutoškoly.cz . The theoretical part of the thesis deals with GPS, real-time communication problems and the Android platform, including its application interface for GPS. In the next part of the thesis, this knowledge is used to design the whole system. The thesis continues with the implementation of a mobile application, the web module and the corresponding server application. The chapters continue to deal with real-time tracking and route editing. The last part is focused on testing and evaluation of the results.

This study defines the optimum route planning for Electric Transmission Lines by Multicriteria Decision Analysis which is based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Determination of the optimum route is performed by using both the spatial and Euclidean distances between two points located on the Earth&rsquo
s surface. The criteria needed to be taken into account to define the route of the Electrical Transmission Lines were evaluated with help of the experts who are doing this business in the available system and for this study the decision about the usage of needed data such as landuse map, landuse capability map, geology map, road map, zone plan and digital elevation models is also made with their knowledge. A Matlab code, which computes the optimum distance between two transformers by using real distance (spatial distance) method and by considering materials mentioned above is written. The results are compared with the ones found from the Euclidian distance, which is the common distance finding method in the available commercial GIS softwares. The spatial resolution effect in finding the spatial distance is also analyzed. The routes obtained by two different distance computation methods are compared with the existing route. The economical expectations in finding the optimum route are also discussed.

Information on the location of mobile nodes in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) has the potential to significantly improve network performance. This thesis uses node location information to develop new techniques for route discovery in on-demand routing protocols such as the Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), thus making an important contribution to enhancing the experience of using mobile networks. A Candidate Neighbours to Rebroadcast the Route Request (CNRR) approach has been proposed to reduce the deleterious impact, known as the broadcast storm, of RREQ packets flooding in traditional on-demand routing protocols. The main concept behind CNRR is specifying a set of neighbours which will rebroadcast the received RREQ. This is a departure from the traditional approach of all receiving nodes rebroadcasting RREQs and has the effect of reducing the problem of redundancy from which mobile networks suffer. The proposed protocol has been developed in two phases: Closest-CNRR and Furthest-CNRR. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms have a significant effect as they reduce the routing overhead of the AODV protocol by up to 28% compared to the C-CNRR, and by up to 17.5% compared to the F-CNRR. Notably, the proposed algorithms simultaneously achieve better throughput and less data dropping. The Link Stability and Energy Aware protocol (LSEA) has been developed to reduce the overhead while increasing network lifetimes. The LSEA helps to control the global dissemination of RREQs in the network by eliminating those nodes that have a residual energy level below a specific threshold value from participation in end-to-end routes. The proposed LSEA protocol significantly increases network lifetimes by up to 19% compared with other on-demand routing protocols while still managing to obtain the same packet delivery ratio and network throughput levels. Furthermore, merging the LSEA and CNRR concepts has the great advantage of reducing the dissemination of RREQs in the network without loss of reachability among the nodes. This increases network lifetimes, reduces the overhead and increases the amount of data sent and received. Accordingly, a Position-based Selective Neighbour (PSN) approach has been proposed which combines the advantages of zoning and link stability. The results show that the proposed technique has notable advantages over both the AODV and MAAODV as it improves delivery ratios by 24.6% and 18.8%, respectively.

The aim of this thesis was to rationally design, construct and test novel protocells equipped with primitive cytoskeletons, which could be produced by integration of simple chemical systems. This was achieved by the non-covalent assembly of a functionalised amino acid, N-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl-tyrosine (FMOC-Tyr), to yield highly structured nanofilament morphologies within the aqueous interiors of micron-sized, membrane-bounded compartments. Initially. the formation of the non-covalently assembled FMOC-Tyr nanofilaments was studied in isolation. Significantly, at a critical filament concentration and appropriate pH, the formation of supramolecular hydrogels was ascertained. Moreover, by substituting FMOC-Tyr with the hydrophilic analogue N-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl- tyrosine-( O)-phosphate (FMOC-Tyr-POH), cleavage of the phosphate group by alkaline phosphatase or cerium oxide nanopal1icles resulted in the formation of gel networks with tuneable (PH or temperature) gel-sol and sol-gel transitions. After the experimental design parameters for hydrogel formation were determined, the FMOC-Tyr nanofilaments were grown within two contrasting model compartments: phospholipid vesicles and inorganic colloidosomes. Significantly, FMOC-Tyr supramolecular hydrogel-containing vesicles showed enhanced resistance to mechanical deformation, osmotic pressure and increased structural persistence. Moreover, primitive cytoskeletal function was further demonstrated via heat-induced structural deformations of vesicles, where morphological transformations were driven by disassembly of the internalised nanofilaments. Growth of FMOC-Tyr cytoskeletal-like filaments within inorganic colloidosomes resulted in silica membrane-directed nanofilament growth from the interior of the inorganic surface towards the centre of the microcapsule. In this instance, it was possible to demonstrate that temperature-dependent filament assembly and disassembly could be used to modulate the interior viscosities of colloidosomes, which in tum regulated intra-protocellular enzyme kinetics. The work presented in this thesis describes the first examples of protocells equipped with functional artificial cytoskeletons comprising self-assembled synthetic building blocks. The incorporation of these bio-inspired scaffolds within protocells not only provides the structural persistence that is central in all living cells, but also a mechanism to re-structure interior environments and control compartment shape.

AbstractBetter understanding of the behaviour of agent-based models, aimed at embedding them in the broader, model-based line of scientific enquiry, requires a comprehensive framework for analysing their results. Seeing models as tools for experimenting in silico, this chapter discusses the basic tenets and techniques of uncertainty quantification and experimental design, both of which can help shed light on the workings of complex systems embedded in computational models. In particular, we look at: relationships between model inputs and outputs, various types of experimental design, methods of analysis of simulation results, assessment of model uncertainty and sensitivity, which helps identify the parts of the model that matter in the experiments, as well as statistical tools for calibrating models to the available data. We focus on the role of emulators, or meta-models – high-level statistical models approximating the behaviour of the agent-based models under study – and in particular, on Gaussian processes (GPs). The theoretical discussion is illustrated by applications to the Routes and Rumours model of migrant route formation introduced before.

Nowadays, time saving in piping stress analysis is a major concern among consultant engineering companies in power and process plants. In this paper, we are going to have a quantity review between some important parameters such as sustained, occasional and expanding stresses with total length and nozzle load of a real case according to ASME B31.3. Most of the times, piping stress designers try different and more flexible piping routes completely arbitrary. Longer piping route means greater mass, and it means a big trouble in earthquake time especially for allowable nozzle loading, on the other hand shorter piping route increases thermal nozzle loading and operating stresses. We will try to find a relationship among mentioned parameters to have an optimal piping route in order to save time and material. Finally, different routes will be analyzed using Caesar II to plot related parameters and find optimum criterion.

Recent trends for linepipe projects reflect a sustained increasing complexity: Sour Service (SS), High Temperature & High Pressure (HT/HP) field conditions, deep and ultra-deep water oil and gas transportation, Artic and Artic “alike” areas. This reflects into stringent requirements for manufacturing and testing of the concerned products, which are not only the straight pipes but also a number of accessories, among which bends are the ones presenting the most complex combination of critical issues. As long as a whole chain reliability standpoint is assumed as the main concern, the design, production and supply of the bends have become a key stage within a linepipe project. Bends for linepipe projects are produced in general by hot induction bending (HIB). Two different fabrication routes can be clearly identified: HIB followed by Stress Relieving (SR) and HIB followed by off-line full quenching and tempering (Q&T). The first method is known as “Traditional route (TR)”, while the second one as “Quenching-Tank (QT)”. A large investigation program was carried out involving the most recognised benders in Europe. The matrix of industrial trials comprised a dimensional size range from 168 to 406 mm OD, 8 to 34 mm WT; X60 to X70 steel grades, different bending and post-bending heat treatments conditions and mother pipe chemistries. For each analysed item, the final bend, the corresponding mother pipe and samples taken in as-bent / as-quenched (TR / QT) conditions were fully characterised in terms of mechanical properties, hardness profiles and microstructure features. As a result, a much better performance was found for the bends produced by the off-line full Q&T method, principally due to the better quenching efficiency with respect to the in-line system. Production of bends through out the traditional method can be seen as a reliable option for bends which are not going to face hard conditions in the field, and therefore the corresponding specification requirements are no stringent as well (i.e. X52 grade or lower, Charpy tests required at 0°C or higher temperature, no corrosion tests required, etc.). If either stringent conditions are required or X60-X80 steel grades are involved, the off-line quenching tank route becomes the reliable option.

Articulated Loading Platforms are compliant structures which undergo excessive displacements due to large hydrodynamic loads produced by wind, waves and currents. Prediction of nonlinear behavior of these complex structures in the nonlinear environment is extremely difficult. The discontinuity in the mooring line stiffness at the equilibrium position due to slackening of the mooring line between tower and tanker introduces nonlinearity in the equation of motion. An attempt to study the effect of the highly nonlinear restoring force and hydrodynamic forces on the system was performed. The time domain response analysis was done on the basis of approximate analytical investigations. The solution of the nonlinear simultaneous equations was performed and the results were interpreted by means of phase plots and poincare mapping. The effect of forcing amplitude on the behavior of the system was studied by varying the frequency ratio. Possible occurrence of sub harmonic and chaotic responses and hence different routes to chaos were also identified. These results can be made use of in the design of mooring lines to avoid structural instabilities in the evolving offshore environment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, LA Metro has encouraged social distancing among passengers—especially at stations of high-demand routes—and has increased fixed-route transit (FRT) services. However, potential impacts of social distancing on the performance of FRT services remain mostly unknown. This research evaluates the accessibility of FRT buses with social distancing using the ridership data collected on four FRT routes: 105, 108, 111, and 115 of the LA Metro's A Line stations located in low-income neighborhoods. This research shows that social distancing of six feet can impact FRT's accessibility to destination stations, and maximum accessibility is achieved only for a certain number of stops served—which is less than the current number of stops served. The FRT routes 105, 108, 111 and 115 have maximum accessibility with social distancing for the number of stops served equal to 65, 52, 52 and 50, respectively. The methodology used in this research can help decision-makers understand how FRT bus frequencies are impacted by social distancing measures, and the results can guide the transit authorities developing FRT service among low-income commuters during and after the pandemic.

The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.

Thermosyphons are an artificial ground-freezing technique that has been used to stabilize permafrost since the 1960s. The largest engineered structure that uses thermosyphons to maintain frozen ground is the Trans Alaska Pipeline, and it has over 124,000 thermosyphons along its approximately 1300 km route. In passive mode, thermosyphons extract heat from the soil and transfer it to the environment when the air temperature is colder than the ground temperature. This passive technology can promote ground cooling during cold winter months. To address the growing need for maintaining frozen ground as air temperatures increase, we investigated a solar-powered refrigeration unit that could operate a thermosyphon (nonpassive) during temperatures above freezing. Our tests showed that energy generated from the solar array can operate the refrigeration unit and activate the hybrid thermosyphon to artificially cool the soil when air temperatures are above freezing. This technology can be used to expand the application of thermosyphon technology to freeze ground or maintain permafrost, particularly in locations with limited access to line power.

This report describes publicly available data sets and quantitative analysis that local communities can use to evaluate environmental justice concerns associated with pipeline projects. We applied these data and analytical methods to two counties in North Carolina (Northampton and Robeson counties) that would be affected by the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). We compared demographic and vulnerability characteristics of census blocks, census block groups, and census tracts that lie within 1 mile of the proposed pipeline route with corresponding census geographies that lie outside of the 1-mile zone. Finally, we present results of a county-level analysis of race and ethnicity data for the entire North Carolina segment of the proposed ACP route. Statistical analyses of race and ethnicity data (US Census Bureau) and Social Vulnerability Index scores (University of South Carolina’s Hazards & Vulnerability Research Institute) yielded evidence of significant differences between the areas crossed by the pipeline and reference geographies. No significant differences were found in our analyses of household income and cancer risk data.

Project objectives: 1) Characterization of variation for yield heterosis in melon using Half-Diallele (HDA) design. 2) Development and implementation of image-based yield phenotyping in melon. 3) Characterization of genetic, epigenetic and transcriptional variation across 25 founder lines and selected hybrids. The epigentic part of this objective was modified during the course of the project: instead of characterization of chromatin structure in a single melon line through genome-wide mapping of nucleosomes using MNase-seq approach, we took advantage of rapid advancements in single-molecule sequencing and shifted the focus to Nanoporelong-read sequencing of all 25 founder lines. This analysis provides invaluable information on genome-wide structural variation across our diversity 4) Integrated analyses and development of prediction models Agricultural heterosis relates to hybrids that outperform their inbred parents for yield. First generation (F1) hybrids are produced in many crop species and it is estimated that heterosis increases yield by 15-30% globally. Melon (Cucumismelo) is an economically important species of The Cucurbitaceae family and is among the most important fleshy fruits for fresh consumption Worldwide. The major goal of this project was to explore the patterns and magnitude of yield heterosis in melon and link it to whole genome sequence variation. A core subset of 25 diverse lines was selected from the Newe-Yaar melon diversity panel for whole-genome re-sequencing (WGS) and test-crosses, to produce structured half-diallele design of 300 F1 hybrids (MelHDA25). Yield variation was measured in replicated yield trials at the whole-plant and at the rootstock levels (through a common-scion grafted experiments), across the F1s and parental lines. As part of this project we also developed an algorithmic pipeline for detection and yield estimation of melons from aerial-images, towards future implementation of such high throughput, cost-effective method for remote yield evaluation in open-field melons. We found extensive, highly heritable root-derived yield variation across the diallele population that was characterized by prominent best-parent heterosis (BPH), where hybrids rootstocks outperformed their parents by 38% and 56 % under optimal irrigation and drought- stress, respectively. Through integration of the genotypic data (~4,000,000 SNPs) and yield analyses we show that root-derived hybrids yield is independent of parental genetic distance. However, we mapped novel root-derived yield QTLs through genome-wide association (GWA) analysis and a multi-QTLs model explained more than 45% of the hybrids yield variation, providing a potential route for marker-assisted hybrid rootstock breeding. Four selected hybrid rootstocks are further studied under multiple scion varieties and their validated positive effect on yield performance is now leading to ongoing evaluation of their commercial potential. On the genomic level, this project resulted in 3 layers of data: 1) whole-genome short-read Illumina sequencing (30X) of the 25 founder lines provided us with 25 genome alignments and high-density melon HapMap that is already shown to be an effective resource for QTL annotation and candidate gene analysis in melon. 2) fast advancements in long-read single-molecule sequencing allowed us to shift focus towards this technology and generate ~50X Nanoporesequencing of the 25 founders which in combination with the short-read data now enable de novo assembly of the 25 genomes that will soon lead to construction of the first melon pan-genome. 3) Transcriptomic (3' RNA-Seq) analysis of several selected hybrids and their parents provide preliminary information on differentially expressed genes that can be further used to explain the root-derived yield variation. Taken together, this project expanded our view on yield heterosis in melon with novel specific insights on root-derived yield heterosis. To our knowledge, thus far this is the largest systematic genetic analysis of rootstock effects on yield heterosis in cucurbits or any other crop plant, and our results are now translated into potential breeding applications. The genomic resources that were developed as part of this project are putting melon in the forefront of genomic research and will continue to be useful tool for the cucurbits community in years to come.
