Članek primerjalno obravnava dve zgodnji teoretični besedili o romanu: Razpravo o izvoru romanov (Traité sur l´Origine des romans) P.D. Hueta (1670) ter Razmislek o romanih (Idée sur les romans) Markiza de Sada (1800). Huet svoje prepričanje, da roman izvira na Orientu, med drugim utemeljuje z ugotovitvami o temperamentu orientalskih ljudstev, ki po njegovem mnenju v največji možni meri ustreza zahtevam romanesknega žanra. Za Markiza de Sada, ki se sicer opredeli za grški izvor romana, je temperament širši pojem. Roman je po njegovem nasledek dveh temeljnih človekovih potreb, potrebe po molitvi in potrebe po ljubezni. Predvidevamo sicer lahko, meni, da se je kot tak (najprej) pojavil v Egiptu, ki je zibelka vseh kultov, vendar pa romani nastajajo od nekdaj in povsod.

Straipsnyje aptariama nauja tendencija moterų literatūroje. Ši tendencija apibūdinama kaip komerciniu požiūriu sėkmingų romanų protrūkis. Šiuo romanus vienijanti tema – jaunų moterų pastangos suderinti sėkmingą karjerą ir emancipuotos moters asmeninius poreikius. Kritinėje šios literatūros recepcijoje vyrauja dvi nuomonės. Vieni kritikai naująjį žanrą tapatina su meilės romanu, skirtu vartojiškumo dvasios apimtai skaitytojų auditorijai, kiti teigia, kad šis žanras įkūnija realistinio romano sugrįžimą ir nurodo akivaizdžias sąsajas su jo žanrinėmis variacijomis. Šiuo požiūriu ši literatūra atspindi svarbiausius laikmečio faktorius, lemiančius tapatybės raidą. Marian Keyes romane Arbūzas pastebimi charakteringiausi aptariamojo naujojo literatūros žanro bruožai, straipsnyje analizuojami pasitelkiant šio žanro tyrinėtojų vertinimus.

RESUMEN Para los historiadores de la época romana imperial que se ocupen de los bandidos y de los pobres en la sociedad romana desde el inicio del Principado, las sátiras son, sin duda, una fuente de información muy importante. Así, el objetivo del artículo es discutir el bandolerismo en la sociedad romana teniendo en cuenta el Satyricon escrito por Petronio y las Metamorfosis, cuyo autor es Apuleyo. Intento estudiar la relación entre historia y literatura, en especial su potencialidad para discutir modelos normativos sobre el pasado romano y buscar formas alternativas para reflexionar sobre masculinidades marginalizadas. PALABRAS CLAVE: bandolerismo, literatura e historia, sociedad romana, sátiras romanas, masculinidades marginales ABSTRACT Regarding studies on bandits and poor people in Roman society during the beginning of the Principate, the satirical novels comprise a very important corpus of evidence. The aim of this paper is to focus on Petronius’ Satyricon and Apuleius’ Metamorphosis to discuss banditry in Roman society. I shall also discuss how literature can provide new insights to rethink marginalized masculinities in Roman society. Abstract Four kinds of Romans in the Frankish kingdoms in the 6th to 8th centuries. Roman law texts from Merowingian Gaul make a difference between cives Romani, Latini and dediticii, all considered as Romans. This difference mattered only to slaves who had been freed. The status of Latin and dediticius was hereditary, whereas the descendants of one who had been freed as civis Romanus were free born Romans, who should be classified as a proper, a fourth kind of beeing Roman; it was the standard kind. The difference was important in civil law, procedural law and criminal law, especially in wergeld, the sum to be payed for expiation when somebody had been killed: Who had killed a Roman, had to pay different sums according to the status of the killed.

Magiškojo realizmo apraiškoms Latvijoje sovietų okupacijos metais įtakos turėjo literatūra ir teoriniai tekstai, prieinami tik Sovietų Sąjungos elitui, ir išeivijoje leisti leidiniai. Šiame straipsnyje autorius daugiausia dėmesio skiria literatūros kūrinių, susijusių su magiškuoju realizmu ir prieinamų Latvijoje stagnacijos laikotarpiu, vertimams, jų įtakai latvių rašytojų kūrybai. Nagrinėjamas latvių rašytojo Zigmundo Skujinio atvejis, ypač jo romanas Gulta ar zelta kāju (Lova su auksine koja, 1984), vienas esminių ir populiariausių latvių romanų, parašytų XX a. 9-ame dešimtmetyje. Kai kurie kritikai pabrėžė romano kompozicijos ir magiškosios poetikos giminystę su Gabrielio Garcíos Márquezo romanu Cien años de soledad (Šimtas metų vienatvės, 1967). Romane, sukurtame prieš Latvijos nepriklausomybės lūžį, Skujinis formaliai pripažino sovietinį modernizmą, nors sekė ir tyrinėjo kelius, kurie vedė į išsilaisvinimą, modernizmo šaknų ieškodamas latvių tautos istorijoje, o ne sovietinių kolonizatorių atneštoje naujoje santvarkoje. Skaitomiausiu kūriniu tapęs romanas leido Skujiniui išsakyti esmines nesmurtinio pasipriešinimo kolonijiniame būvyje idėjas.

Slika Hansa Holbeina Tijelo mrtvoga Krista u grobu imala je snažan utjecaj na refleksiju o mogućnosti uskrsnuća u kasnom djelu Fjodora Mihajloviča Dostojevskoga. Tom se slikom posve izravno i intenzivno bave likovi romana Idiot, a rasprava o Holbeinovoj slici u djelu Dostojevskoga najčešće se ograničava na taj roman. Usuprot tomu, autor u članku istražuje mogućnost da Dostojevski u romanu Idiot nije zaključio raspravu o Holbeinovoj slici. Usporedna analiza tekstova dvaju romana ostavlja mogućnost da je rasprava o mrtvom tijelu starca Zosime u romanu Braća Karamazovi zapravo nastavak rasprave Dostojevskoga o Holbeinovoj slici Tijelo mrtvoga Krista u grobu.

COSA TARDO ROMANO E MEDIEVALE I: L'ARCE E LA STRUTTURA NELLA PARTE NORD-ORIENTALE DELLA CITTAL'obiettivo degli scavi è di ricontrollare e datare l'insediamento post-romano a Cosa alla luce dei recenti studi sulla ceramica tardo-romana e medievale. Due aree sono state esplorate sull'Arce: la prima a nord della porta principale e la seconda a ovest del tempio D. Infine, una torre posta al di sopra delle mura romane nella parte nord-orientale dell città è stata parzialmente messa in luce.Sull'Arce si può ricostruire un'occupazione di epoca Bizantina: l'insieme comprendeva quartieri di abitazione all'interno del tempio, con un granaio, un fienile e stalle adiacenti. Si tratta probabilmente di una mansio, fortificata dopo un incendio nel VI secolo. Invece, la torre scavata nella zona nord-est della città romana testimonia una presenza medievale. Si tratta di una struttura tondeggiante irregolare che si appoggia alle mura romane guardando il Portus Cosanus. Potrebbe essere interpretata come base per una catapulta, datata verso l'inizio del XIV secolo.

Recientemente, se han producido cambios respecto a esta visión tradicional, que han insistido en la existencia de un componente democrático en el sistema político romano. Se propone un análisis de estos nuevos planteamientos desde el punto de vista de la historiografía sobre la plebe romana.

La institución romana del domicilium convierte al sujeto en residente. Suele designar el lugar de residencia prolongada del incola o habitante que ha emigrado a una comunidad, por contraposición al municeps; por lo tanto, es un vínculo jurídico entre la ciudad y la persona que ha emigrado a ella. Frente a la expresión de la origo en los textos epigráficos, que es muy abundante, la manifestación del domicilo solo se hace de forma excepcional, en atención al escaso número de referencias conservadas, y su enunciación es muy similar a la que marca el origen. ABSTRACTThe Roman institution of the domicilium turns the subject into a resident. It usually designates the place of prolonged residence of the incola or inhabitant who has emigrated to a community, as opposed to the municeps. Анотація:
Grški helenistični roman je bil v zadnjih tridesetih letih deležen ponovnega zanimanja, delno tudi zaradi premikov, ki so se zgodili na področju raziskovanja književnosti. Podrobneje sem pregledala dva slovenska članka o grškem antičnem romanu in v nadaljevanju opisala nekaj modernih literarnih metod, ki so jih pogosteje uporabljali za preučevanje grškega helenističnega romana.

Les recherches portant sur les fora provinciaux effectuées au cours des dernières décennies ont permis de redéfinir un certain nombre de leurs caractéristiques. L’étude du décor de ces centres civiques dans sa globalité constitue alors une approche susceptible d’apporter une meilleure compréhension de ces espaces. Cette première approche du sujet a pour objectif d’aborder la question du dialogue entre les images présentes sur le forum et leurs contextes. Le décor figuratif permet de définir les principales thématiques, qui sont souvent complétées par des décors non figuratifs, et qui participent à la diffusion de l’idéologie impériale. Ce décor doit ensuite être contextualisé, afin d’en comprendre la conception, et d’aborder la question de sa réception par le spectateur

Ce projet vise à reconstruire le développement du portrait peint à Rome et l’utilisation de ce type de support figuré à Rome, à partir de la République jusqu’à la fin du IIIe siècle après J.C. Le portrait peint dans l’art romain suit les changements culturels et les limites de l’Empire, en se mêlant avec des traditions artistiques de différentes aires culturelles. L’étude de ce sujet, qui présente de profondes difficultés, est souvent considéré à tort comme un sous-argument de la thématique du portrait statuaire à Rome. Or le portrait peint mérite une étude comme sujet indépendant car, dans l’Antiquité, la peinture a été « l’arte guida ». La peinture ancienne est aujourd’hui peu connue car la plupart des œuvres ont été perdues, ce qui rend le portrait peint difficile à reconstruire. Le manque de sources archéologiques relatives à la genèse de cette forme d'art est comblé par certaines sources littéraires grecques et romaines. Pour la période impériale, les témoignages archéologiques sont plus abondants, comme dans le cas des portraits du Fayoum, qui, cependant, sont limités à la province de l'Egypte, ou des fresques trouvées dans un certain nombre de sites archéologiques importants en Méditerranée (les plus précieux ont été trouvés à Herculanum, Pompéi et Stabies, mais aussi en Syrie)
This project aims to reconstruct the development of painting portraits in Rome and the use of these types of image employed for Romans, from the Republic until the end of the third century AD. The portrait painted in Roman art follows the cultural changes and the limits of the Empire, mingling with artistic traditions from different cultural areas. The study of this subject, which presents profound difficulties, is often wrongly considered as a sub-argument of the theme of the statuary portrait in Rome. The painted portrait deserves a study as an independent subject because in Antiquity the painting was "l’arte guida". The old painting is now little known because most of the works have been lost and it makes the painted portrait difficult to reconstruct. The lack of archaeological sources relating to the genesis of this art form is filled by some Greek and Roman literary sources. For the imperial period archaeological evidence is more abundant, as in the case of Fayum portraits, which, however, are limited to the province of Egypt, or frescoes found in several important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean (the more valuable were found at Herculaneum, Pompeii and Stabies, but also in Syria)

Les théâtres romains, dont on peut observer les vestiges dans de très nombreuses villes tout autour de la Méditerranée, sont des objets familiers et pourtant souvent encore mal connus. Ils n’ont bénéficié que de rares études synthétiques. Inspiré par les recherches menées sur les théâtres et autres édifices de spectacles des époques plus récentes, ce travail porte un regard résolument urbain sur des édifices polyvalents caractéristiques de l’urbanitas : à la fois lieux de spectacles, de vie quotidienne et de cérémonies, lieux de rassemblements civiques et religieux, lieux de mixité sociale. Les innovations architecturales apportées par les Romains à la forme théâtrale inventée par les Grecs leur permettaient en effet de déterminer plus librement la place des théâtres dans leurs villes et de les intégrer à des programmes urbains concertés et signifiants. En confrontant l’analyse des représentations antiques - figurées ou littéraires - des théâtres romains et quelques études de cas archéologiques approfondies, l’objectif était d’explorer et de clarifier l’ensemble des liens qui pouvaient se nouer entre le théâtre et la ville à l’époque romaine, des plus matériels aux plus symboliques. La multiplication des échelles d’approche et l’attention portée à l’insertion dynamique et subjective des théâtres dans les paysages urbains les fait apparaître comme des objets à la fois typiques et singuliers, complexes et immédiatement lisibles et pour finir remarquablement efficaces dans la composition et l’incarnation de l’image des villes
The vestiges of Roman theatres are ubiquitous throughout the Mediterranean Basin; these structures are familiar, yet remain relatively unexplored, with only a few studies considering their general place in Roman life. Inspired by research on the theatres and entertainment buildings of more recent times, this study offers an urbanistic perspective on these multipurpose edifices; characteristic of the urbanitas, these were at the same time buildings for theatrical performances, ritual ceremonies, and daily activities; civic and religious meeting places; centres of social interaction. The innovations the Romans made to the architectural theatrical form invented by the Greeks enabled them to redefine the theatre’s place in the city and to incorporate it purposefully into their plans for urbanization. Combining the analysis of ancient textual and pictoral representations of Roman theatres with archaeological case studies, this thesis explores and clarifies the practical and symbolic relationships between the theatre and the city in Roman times. By broadening the scope of investigation and by exploring the dynamic and affective positioning of the theatre into the Roman urban landscape, this thesis reveals these architectural structures to be simultaneously typical and unique, complex and understandable, and ultimately remarkably effective in establishing and embodying the image of the city

L’objectiu principal del nostre estudi és donar a conèixer uns materials ceràmics, les llànties, des d’una nova perspectiva metodològica intentant posar-les al nivell de qualsevol treball científic dins del camp de la ceramologia. El jaciment de procedència d’aquests materials és la ciutat romana de Baetulo (Badalona) situada entre dos de les ciutats més importants de la Tarraconenses com són Emporiae (Empúries) i Tarraco (Tarragona) i que presenta per sí mateixa una important dinàmica comercial gràcies al cultiu i exportació del vi, i que fa del seu port, un punt tant de sortida com d’entrada de mercaderies. La principal problemàtica en l’estudi de les llànties ha estat la manca d’una tipologia consensuada per part dels investigadors a l’hora de classificar el material, fet que ha multiplicat la nomenclatura per un sol tipus dificultant enormement la correcta identificació del material a estudiar. Això ha comportat també greus problemes amb la cronologia d’aquestes ceràmiques, moltes d’elles datades a partir de principis estilístics i no pas gràcies al context arqueològic en el qual han estar trobades. En aquest treball doncs, s’ha dedicat a fer una anàlisis de totes les principals tipologies existents per tal d’identificar-ne els problemes i proposar quines són les més adients a l’hora de classificar el material, oferint solucions per aquelles llànties de difícil assignació degut a la manca dels principals indicadors utilitzats per la seva correcta identificació. Així doncs, s’ha dividit el material en grans grups segons les seves característiques morfològiques en llànties republicanes, de volutes, dics, les firmalampen (o de canal), les cristianes (o de TSA) i un grup per aquelles que no es poden ubicar en cap dels anteriors. Degut a la naturalesa dels materials presentats en aquesta tesi, hem separat aquell que procedeix d’excavacions científiques (1562 individus) completament identificables i datables, d’aquell material (1032 individus) que si bé sabem que procedeix de Baetulo, va ser dipositat al museu de Badalona sense un context estratigràfic clar. Això ens ha permès poder datar les llànties segons altres materials con és la Terra Sigillata, oferint l’objecte amb el seu context i podent realitzar d’aquesta manera també, una seqüencia dels tipus de llàntia que estaven en circulació en una època determinada. Ens ha interessat moltíssim intentar identificar els possibles punts de producció de les llànties romanes de Baetulo, intentant superar principis con la decoració o les marques (epigràfiques o no) que aquest material presenta. No hem pogut realitzar estudis arqueomètrics per tal d’obtenir unes dades objectives que haguessin estat molt difícils de comparar ja que pocs són els estudis publicats que categoritzen aquest tipus de ceràmica. Un altra de les realitats que ens hem trobat és la manca de llànties que compleixin els quatre principis bàsics per poder parlar de produccions: procedència estratigràfica, tipus identificable, marca i decoració. Malauradament, en el moment de realitzar el nostre estudi, no hi havia pràcticament cap obra de referència o monografia de materials lluernaris procedents d’excavacions científiques on es tingués identificat el seu context, així que també ens ha estat molt difícil poder teoritzar sobre les possibles relacions comercials de la ciutat de Baetulo amb aquests jaciments propers, com també delimitar d’una forma clara quines eres les rutes de comerç entre la nostra ciutat i altres punts de l’Imperi com podia ser la mateixa península itàlica, el sud de la Gàl·lia o ja en època més avançada, amb el nord d’Àfrica. Tanmateix, hem pogut identificar, datar i estudiar tant marques com decoracions d’un gran volum de material que dóna una perspectiva interessant de cara a les futures investigacions sobre les llànties romanes, situant-les dins de l’estudi de la ceramologia al mateix nivell que altres grans produccions ceràmiques.
The main objective of this study is the analysis of the roman lamps from a new methodological perspective, trying to consider them at the level of any scientific work in the field of ceramology. The site of origin of these materials is the Roman city of Baetulo (Badalona) located between two of the most important cities of the Tarraconenses, such as Emporiae (Empúries) and Tarraco (Tarragona). We offer an analysis of all the existing typologies in order to identify their problems and to propose the best ones when it comes to classifying the material, offering solutions for those lamps which have difficult allocation due to the lack of the main indicators used for its correct identification. Thus, the material has been divided into large groups according to its morphological characteristics: republican, volutes, discus, firmalampen, Christian (or TSA) and a group for those that cannot be locate in any of the previous ones. We have been very interested in trying to identify the possible points of production of the Roman lamps found in Baetulo, trying to overcome principles with the decoration or the marks (epigraphic or not) that this material presents. Unfortunately, we were not able to carry out archaeometric studies in order to obtain objective data, which, by the way, would have been very difficult to compare because the lack of published studies that categorized this type of ceramics. Lamentably, at the time this tesis has been carried out, there was no papers of reference related to scientific excavations which contexts could be clearly identified, for that, it has been very difficult to theorize about the possible commercial relations of the city of Baetulo with their nearby sites, as well as clearly delimiting the routes of trade between our city and other points of the Empire, such as the Italic peninsula, southern Gaul and North Africa.

Um estudo historiográfico das Historiae abbreuiatae de Aurélio Vítor. Nisto consiste o presente trabalho, que procura determinar de que modo o referido historiador, no ocaso do reinado de Constâncio II, compôs uma narrativa dedicada à história do Império romano em sua totalidade. Para tanto, em primeiro lugar buscamos definir a natureza da obra. Em que pese os nítidos elementos biográficos que a integram, assim como a brevidade do texto, a obra de Aurélio Vítor deve ser pensada enquanto uma história, na medida em que o objetivo do autor se voltava para a exposição das causas que teriam condicionado o curso dos acontecimentos, da batalha de Ácio até o penúltimo ano do governo de Constâncio II. Desta forma, em um segundo momento, analisamos as estratégias de periodização e as concepções que Aurélio Vítor adotou a fim de contemplar a história imperial. As ações e o caráter moral dos sucessivos imperadores emergem nas Historiae abbreuiatae como o motor a partir do qual se movimentava a história da era imperial romana. Isto implicava, pois, o reconhecimento das oscilações que o mundo romano teria vivenciado ao longo de quase quatro séculos e as contradições que animavam a conduta das personagens históricas. Do que resultava, igualmente, na impossibilidade de se identificar um modelo ideal de imperador, em razão dos fatores e das circunstâncias distintas que marcariam o desenrolar da história do Império romano, como narrada por Aurélio Vítor.
A historiographical study of Aurelius Victors Historiae abbreuiatae. That is what defines the present work, which tries to ascertain how the aforementioned historian settled up a narrative about the history of the Roman Empire in the twilight of the reign of Constantius II. Therefore, we discuss at first the nature of the work. Despite the clear biographical trend we can observe in the text, as well as the brevity that characterizes it, the work of Aurelius Victor should be seen as a historical narrative since the author aimed to expose both the causes and the course of Roman imperial history, from the Battle of Actium to the last but one year of Constantius IIs reign. Thereupon we examine the strategies of periodization and the perspectives defined by Aurelius Victor in order to compose his text. In the Historiae abbreuiatae, the conduct showed by the emperors and their moral character represented the driving force of the narrative. That led the author to emphasize the ups and downs of Roman past in almost four hundred years of history. In this sense, Aurelius Victor did not lose track of some contradictions that encourage historical figures into action. That resulted in Aurelius Victors failure to identify an idealized model of Roman emperor due to distinct elements and circunstances that he himself pointed out in the course of the history of the Roman Empire.

O objetivo da presente dissertação é investigar um conjunto de pequenos fragmentos de papiros alexandrinos nomeado Acta Alexandrinorum. Os escritos narram episódios referentes à Alexandria nos dois primeiros séculos de Império Romano. Foram, no entanto, encontrados em diferentes locais do Egito, fato que sugere uma moderada circulação dos escritos na região. A hipótese é que um estruturado e coeso grupo de cidadãos alexandrinos do Ginásio, de ascendência grega e origem nobre, utilizaram-se dos escritos para manifestar suas insatisfações ao poder imperial. Pretendiam, com os relatos, criar um clima de resistência aos romanos e, ao mesmo tempo, exaltar a importância de Alexandria naquele universo, delimitando também uma identidade alexandrina restrita aos seus elementos de maior distinção. E mais: desejavam marcar a indignação quanto aos vizinhos judeus, que estariam ameaçando alguns direitos antes restritos ao grupo. Através dos textos, pode-se analisar como a romanização foi recebida e entendida pelos alexandrinos. Além disso, a documentação lança luz sobre elementos diversos da vida cívica e social da cidade e nos permite avaliar a sua importância no contexto imperial.
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate a group of small Alexandrian fragments of papyrus named Acta Alexandrinorum. The texts narrate episodes concerning Alexandria in the two first centuries of Roman Empire. But they were found in different places of Egypt, fact that suggests a moderate circulation of the writings in the region. The hypothesis is that a structured and limited group of Alexandrian citizens from the gymnasium, of Greek ascendance and noble birth, would use the writings to express their feelings of dissatisfaction to the Imperial power. They intended, with the accounts, to create an atmosphere of resistance to the Romans, and at the same time, to exalt the importance of Alexandria in that universe and also, to delimit an Alexandrian identity that should be restricted to their elements of higher distinction. Besides that, they also longed to emphasize the indignation to their Jewish neighbors, which were 8 threatening some rights that were before limited to their group. Through the texts, we can analyze how Romanization was received and understood by the Alexandrians. Besides that, the documents illustrate several elements of the civic and social life of the city and help to evaluate its importance in the imperial context.

Cette thèse présente les résultats d’une fouille archéologique préventive menée sur un site de la région périurbaine est de la ville antique de Beyrouth. Leur étude approfondie montre des changements dans la fonction d’utilisation de cet espace, toujours lié directement à la ville. Son urbanisme s’est développé sur les bords des prolongations des axes urbains. Il n’a été bien planifié qu’à partir du Ier s. apr. J.-C. durant sa transformation en un espace funéraire. Sa division par des limites de terrains servait probablement aux colons nouvellement installés pour leurs activités agricoles, économiques, artisanales, etc. L’installation de constructions monumentales dans ce secteur périurbain n’a commencé qu’à la fin du IIe s. apr. J.-C. C’est ainsi qu’un sanctuaire du culte héliopolitain a été construit dans la plaine côtière, entre les deux voies menant à la ville, au point le plus proche de la mer et sur une falaise. Sa destruction est confirmée durant le IVe s. apr. J.-C.,soit à cause du tremblement de terre du 348/349 apr. J.-C. soit à la suite de la christianisation de la région. Ensuite, ce secteur a abrité plusieurs grandes résidences qui ont été détruites, soit par le tremblement de terre du 551, soit ultérieurement. Vers le début de la période médiévale, l’espace périurbain est a été abandonné pour la récupération des pierres des anciens monuments. Son occupation par des bâtiments ne reprend qu’à la période ottomane
This thesis presents the results of the archaeological rescue excavation of a site situated in the periurban area of the ancient city of Beirut. The study findings reveal chronological changes in the use of the space, that are consistently linked to developments associated with the growth of the city. The site developed along the extensions of the urban axes, but was fully elaborated in the 1st century A.D. with its transformation into a burial ground. Divided by territory limits, the new colonists then most likely used this location for their economical, agricultural, and artisanal activities. The installation of monumental constructions in this peri-urban area began at the end of the 2nd century A.D. A sanctuary pertaining to the Heliopolitan cult was thus built on the plain between the two roads leading to the city, on the “Ras Mdawar” cliff at the nearest point to thesea. Its destruction is dated to the 4th century A.D., either as a consequence of the earthquake of 348/349 AD or as a result of the Christianization of the region. Several large villas were later built in this area and destroyed either by the earthquake of 551 AD or at a later period. With the start of the medieval era, the peri-urban space was abandoned and exploited for the recuperation of stones from the ancient monuments. It remained unoccupied until the Ottoman period

Cette thèse se propose d’analyser les images de la nuit et ses significations dans les romans du XVIII siècle, à partir des années 1730-1740, dans le cadre de trois littératures: la littérature anglaise, française et italienne. Deux conceptions opposées sont mises en comparaison: la première, d’exorcisation de la nuit, est typique de la première partie du siècle; elle est représentée principalement par le genre des romans libertins. La deuxième conception montre une valorisation de la nuit qu’on trouve en particulier dans les romans gothiques, qui se sont développés à partir de la seconde partie du siècle. Le but final de la présente recherche est de trouver une explication au refus de la nuit de la part de certains auteurs et ensuite de repérer les causes du bouleversement de cette vision. Puisque la nuit empêche le sens de la vue, elle a été considérée une forme de négation de l’espace physique; selon le profil psychologique et anthropologique la nuit constituerait alors la cause principale de la perte d’orientation. Selon une interprétation intellectuelle et philosophique, elle serait un symbole d’ignorance et d’irrationalité. La situation change vers la moitié du siècle des Lumières, car la nuit commence à assumer un rôle actif et nécessaire dans le processus d’apprentissage. Au niveau social, les rencontres les plus importantes adviennent pendant la nuit. Dans le revival des cathédrales gothiques et des châteaux médiévaux, on voit que la nuit s’empare désormais de l’espace, qui s’enrichit de lumières et d’ombres.
This thesis has the purpose to analyze the images of the night and its meanings in the novels of the 18th century, from 1730-1740, in the ambit of three literatures: the English, the French and the Italian literature. Two opposite conceptions are compared: the first, to exorcise the night, is typical in the first half of the century and it is represented mainly by libertine novels. The second shows a valorisation of the night that can be found above all in the gothic novels that belong to the second part of the century. The final objective of the following research is to find an explanation to the rejection of the night by some authors and therefore to retrieve the causes of the change of vision. Since the night impedes sight, it has been considered a negation of space; according to the psychological and anthropological profile night would then be the main cause of the loss of orientation. Finally, according to an intellectual interpretation, it would be a sign of ignorance. The situation changes when the night starts to assume an active and necessary role in the learning process. In the literary fiction, the most important encounters happen at night. In the revival of the gothic cathedrals and the medieval castles, it is evident how the night takes possession of the space that is enriched with lights and shades.

This thesis has the purpose to analyze the images of the night and its meanings in the novels of the 18th century, from 1730-1740, in the ambit of three literatures: the English, the French and the Italian literature. Two opposite conceptions are compared: the first, to exorcise the night, is typical in the first half of the century and it is represented mainly by libertine novels. The second shows a valorisation of the night that can be found above all in the gothic novels that belong to the second part of the century. The final objective of the following research is to find an explanation to the rejection of the night by some authors and therefore to retrieve the causes of the change of vision. Since the night impedes sight, it has been considered a negation of space; according to the psychological and anthropological profile night would then be the main cause of the loss of orientation. Finally, according to an intellectual interpretation, it would be a sign of ignorance. The situation changes when the night starts to assume an active and necessary role in the learning process. In the literary fiction, the most important encounters happen at night. In the revival of the gothic cathedrals and the medieval castles, it is evident how the night takes possession of the space that is enriched with lights and shades.

Miközben a világ számos pontján horizontálisan, és az egyes társadalmakban vertikálisan is még mindig igen nagy eltérések vannak a női emancipáció terén, a média egyre gyakrabban beszél arról, hogy a XXI. század a nők évszázada lesz, és az utóbbi években egyre erősödő tendenciaként mutatkozik a tudományban is, hogy új kutatási irányok bontakoznak ki a női tapasztalat és szemléleti sajátosságok megjelenítésére.A témához kapcsolódva a Szegedi Tudományegyetem hispanista műhelyében 2013 novemberében került megrendezésre a Nők a hispán világban című tudományos konferencia amelynek előadásai kiindulópontként szolgáltak jelen kötet összeállításához, kiegészítve hispanista kollégák hasonló témában született tanulmányaival. A kötet szerkesztőinek reményei szerint az itt közölt munkák azt bizonyítják, hogy a női szempont igen sokrétűen érvényesíthető, releváns megközelítés az általuk kutatott régióban is.

ZusammenfassungDie beiden im Exil entstandenen Romane „The Real Life of Sebastian Knight“ (1941) von Vladimir Nabokov und „Doktor Faustus“ (1947) von Thomas Mann sind zwei fiktionale Texte über das Schreiben nicht-fiktionaler Künstler-Biographien. Da die fiktiven Biographen-Figuren selbst keine Künstler sind, wird in beiden Romanen der Blick von außen auf die künstlerische Kreativität dargestellt. Auf der Werkebene werden diese Versuche, einen anderen Menschen in seinem Gewordensein aus seiner Lebensgeschichte heraus zu verstehen, aber immer wieder mit den Mitteln der Groteske als unzulänglich bloßgestellt, nicht zuletzt durch die Lächerlichkeit ihrer den Prämissen und Strukturmerkmalen der anti-modernen Romanbiographien der 1920er und 1930er verpflichteten Erzähler-Figuren. Nabokovs besonders selbstreferentieller Roman ist ein Text über die Unmöglichkeit, einen anderen Menschen zu verstehen, indem man sein Leben erzählend rekonstruiert, was durch einen nicht offen unzuverlässigen, aber dennoch höchst zweifelhaften Ich-Erzähler narrativ gestaltet wird. Mann dagegen nutzt einen offen unzuverlässigen Erzähler, um einen Meinungsvorschlag zur Diskussion zu stellen, ohne dass Mann sich selbst als Autor zu dieser Position bekennen müsste. Beide Romane verfügen über die erzählerischen Traditionen der Romantik und bringen somit letztlich ihre Interpreten in die Position, in ihren Verstehensakten nun auch selbst Position zu beziehen, ob das Verstehen eines Künstlers – hier nicht seines Lebens, sondern eines seiner Werke – möglich sei.

This chapter examines Augustine of Hippo’s world-historical sermons on the Roman trial of Jesus. “Pilate was a Roman”, he says, “and the Romans sent him to Judaea as governor.” As this suggests, for the illustrious African bishop, the sentence under which Jesus died is a Roman sentence. The passion is legally, for Augustine—unlike for many patristic commentators—a Roman affair. On Augustine’s reading, Jesus is arrested by the Romans, and it is a “Roman judge” (iudex Romanus) who sentences him to death. In contrast to much of the Christian tradition, Augustine accepts that it is the Roman imperium that most brutally tortures, condemns, and kills Jesus. The rest of this book will argue that Augustine’s insistence on Pilate’s guilt has a long political legacy in medieval and early modern Europe. In a word, this political legacy is the concept of the ‘secular’.

Abstract This chapter deals with the regionally restricted survival of Latin and Gallo-Romance after the fall of the Western Empire and their replacement by varieties of West Germanic languages (especially Frankish), mainly in the regions of persistent contact between Romance and Germanic, i.e. in the regions between the Rhine, Moselle, and Meuse in Merovingian and Carolingian times. The phases of this linguistic change are attested by four sets of evidence: firstly, contemporary Germanic-Frankish loanwords, personal names, and Frankish toponyms; secondly, toponyms originating from Latin or Gallo-Romance dialects, received by target languages such as Frankish, Old High German, and Dutch; thirdly, Latin or Gallo-Romance loanwords in the Germanic-Frankish target languages; fourthly, Frankish loanwords in Old French and in Gallo-Romance dialects of Eastern and Northern France. Most of the Latin-Romance language islands in these regions came to an end in the eighth century, with the exception of the area around Trier and the River Moselle, called Mosella Romana, the densest and longest-lived zone of Latin-Roman continuity, ending only at the end of the tenth century. West of this region and the later Romance–Germanic language border, a huge number of Frankish loanwords and some West Germanic toponyms attest to the extent of contacts between Franks and Romans in Northern and Eastern Gaul until the extinction of the Frankish language (in around the eighth century, except for the elites), contacts that involved agriculture, military affairs, law, but also everyday terms, whose reception into Late Latin can only be explained by long-lasting bilingualism of the speakers.

Chapter four examines English attitudes towards Roman Scotland. It introduces the writings of William Stukeley, one of the most influential antiquarians working in England during the first half of the eighteenth century, looking in particular at the content of his 1720 essay An Account of a Roman Temple. While Stukeley was convinced, like Sir Robert Sibbald before him, that the Romans had conquered and civilised much of Scotland, fellow English antiquarian John Horsley took the view that they had in fact decided against colonising such a barren and inhospitable land. Horsley’s posthumously published 1732 work, Britannia Romana, sets out his pragmatic approach to Scotland’s ancient history and reveals an antiquarian who was far less influenced by patriotism and Romanism than many of his contemporaries.

Yayınlandığı dönemde ses getiren romanların sinemaya ve/veya diziye uyarlanması, görüntülerin egemen olduğu günümüz medyasında sıklıkla görülmektedir. Margaret Atwood’un 1985 yılında yazdığı distopik roman Handmaid’s Tale/Damızlık Kızın Öyküsü, 2017 yılında aynı isimle diziye uyarlanarak yayınlanmaya başlamıştır. 69. Emmy Ödülleri’nde dram dalında en iyi dizi ödülünü kazanan Handmaid’s Tale, aynı zamanda bilim-kurgu ve gerilim de içermektedir. Handmaid’s Tale’in birçok distopya romanı gibi tekrar gündeme gelmesinin arkasındaki sebeplerden biri, içeriğinde güncel siyasi rejimlerin farklı bakış açılarıyla eleştirilmesidir. Bu çalışmada Handmaid’s Tale romanı için hazırlanan kitap kapak tasarımlarının, biçimsel açıdan grafik tasarım unsurları, biçim ve içerik bağlamında ise göstergebilim yöntemi dikkate alınarak incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Görsel tasarım elemanı olarak renk, kimliğini kanıtlayan tasarımlar için simgesel minimalist anlatım amacıyla da kullanılabilmektedir. Kırmızı ile siyah kullanılarak, dizi aracılığıyla geniş kitleler tarafından tanınan kadın arketip Offred (Elisabeth Moss), sıklıkla görsel yorumlamalar olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Tasarımlarda kağıtların kesilerek eksiltilmesi, Gestalt yasalarından gözün tamamlama yasası gibi yöntemlere dayanan grafiksel çözümlemeler görülmektedir. Çalışmada, Handmaid’s Tale için hazırlanan kitap kapak tasarımları, bir romanın/konunun minimal, anlaşılır grafik tasarım ürünleri olarak oluşturulması bakımından göstergebilimsel olarak incelenmiştir. Kitap kapak tasarımında kullanılan tasarım öğelerinin işlevleri, romanın içeriğini yansıtması bakımından sorgulanacaktır.

This paper is dedicated to the environmental protection according to the rules of Roman law. Combining Roman and environmental law may seem controversial, since the latter is regulated by the means of public law, and on the contrary, Roman ​​private law is not suitable for systematic environmental protection. Hence, the protection of environment was neither a main issue of Roman politics nor Roman law. Nevertheless, the Romans created several legal instruments that could be used to protect the collective interest in preventing the environmental damages. Regarding the above mentioned, this paper offers a view on the different sources that record the protective attitude of Romans towards the nature and environment. In addition, this paper examines the instruments of legal protection of environment in the sources of Roman law, i.e., interdicts and actions that tend to protect the purity of air and waters. The paper is intended to serve as a source of information for practitioners as well as for historians or academics dealing with Roman law, while everyone will be approaching the text differently and with different questions.

In Roman legal tradition, representation emerges and evolves as a significant institution that facilitates and expedites legal relationships among individuals. Representation during the Roman law period was not merely a legal instrument but also a reflection of the social norms and values of that time. The indirect representation developed by the Romans implied that the representative would conclude a transaction in their own name but on behalf of another, transferring all effects of the performed task to the represented party. The study highlights the development of representation and its various forms that evolved as needs and circumstances changed within the state, emphasizing its importance in the daily lives of Romans and its influence on contemporary legal representation as we know it today.

Romula, the most important urban settlement of Dacia Inferior (Dacia Malvensis) province of the Roman empire during the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D., was located in the present-day Resca village�Dobrosloveni commune, Olt County, Romania. Most of the Roman town remains are underneath Resca village premises, the areas suitable for archaeological or geophysical research being limited. This paper presents an integrated geophysical study carried out in the Central Fort zone of the archaeological site in September 2020, which included magnetic, gravity, and geoelectrical (ERT�Electrical Resistivity Tomography) surveys. The magnetic survey covered the entire Central Fort area (3 hectares), in continuous data acquisition mode, using profiles with approximately N�S orientation and 2 m spacing between the profiles. The gravity and ERT surveys were conducted on profiles with NE�SW and NW�SE orientation, with 2 m spacing between successive gravity measurements and 0.8 or 1 m electrode spacing. The geophysical data analysis revealed distinct anomalous zones and lineaments with preferential NW�SE and NE�SW orientations, likely corresponding to Roman construction elements incorporating baked bricks or stone, brick debris, pits, or furnaces. An anomalous lineament possibly corresponding to an underground sewer or drainage channel was also detected in the northern extremity of the surveyed perimeter. These preliminary results demonstrate the applicability of the selected geophysical investigation methods in the specific conditions of Resca�Romula archeological site. A future research direction consists of testing the validity of the geophysical survey results through systematic archaeological excavations.

Résumé: La recherche s'intéresse à la formation de Le Corbusier et à sa capacité d'abstraction au travers des mémoires, images liées à la connaissance du monde antique; un approfondissement qui traite le lien entre les œuvres du Maître et l'étude de l'architecture romaine, soulignant ainsi deux clés de lecture: une liée à l'archétype des modèles classiques, et une seconde liée aux ruines et à son paysage archéologique. Si la première laisse apparaitre clairement la composante rationnelle, volonté de poursuivre une architecture universelle, dans laquelle s'affirme l'utilisation de la raison que seuls les archétypes peuvent enseigner; la seconde tente de délimiter la relation entre le pouvoir évocateur de la ruine et les suggestions personnelles de l'architecte. Parcourant les phases de sa formation, la recherche se concentre sur les connaissances que le jeune Jeanneret acquiert durant son séjour allemand (1910-1911), première phase d'étude de l'architecture romaine qui alimente un intérêt destiné à se développer grâce à l'expérience du Voyage d'Orient et à l'approfondissement de certaines sources, tels que les vues de Piranesi. Cet approfondissement se retrouve dans de nombreux dessins et réflexions contenus dans les carnets 4 et 5 rédigés durant le séjour romain. Ces expériences représenteront une source d'inspiration pour sa production architecturale et théorique, présuppositions qui semblent apparaitre dans certaines œuvres de l'architecte y compris la Haute Cour de Justice de Chandigarh en 1952. Abstract: The research focuses on Le Corbusier educational process and on his ability to abstract, through his memories, the images related to the knowledge of the Ancient World; a study that addresses the clear connection between the works of Le Corbusier and his knowledge of Roman architecture, outlining two interpretations: the first one linked to the archetype of classic models, and the second one to ruins and archaeological landscape. The first interpretation clearly illustrates the rational perspective, the will to pursue an universal architecture distinguished by use of reason, that only archetypes can teach, whereas the second interpretation attempts to outline the relationship between the evocative influence of the ruin and the personal suggestions of the architect. Retracing the steps of his educational process, the research investigates the knowledge acquired by the young Jeanneret during his German stay (1910-1911). This is the first phase of the study of Roman architecture, that inspires him an interest that will be pursued later through the experience of the Voyage d 'Orient and the study of some sources, such as Piranesi's views. This learning is reflected in numerous drawings and reflections contained in Carnet 4 and in Carnet 5, elaborated during his stay in Rome. The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Scotland in the Roman world: Research into Roman Scotland requires an appreciation of the wider frontier and Empire-wide perspectives, and Scottish projects must be integrated into these wider, international debates. The rich data set and chronological control that Scotland has to offer can be used to inform broader understandings of the impact of Rome.  Changing worlds: Roman Scotland’s rich data set should be employed to contribute to wider theoretical perspectives on topics such as identity and ethnicity, and how these changed over time. What was the experience of daily life for the various peoples in Roman Scotland and how did interactions between incomers and local communities develop and change over the period in question, and, indeed, at and after its end?  Frontier Life: Questions still remain regarding the disposition and chronology of forts and forces, as well as the logistics of sustaining and supplying an army of conquest and occupation. Sites must be viewed as part of a wider, interlocking set of landscapes, and the study of movement over land and by sea incorporated within this. The Antonine Wall provides a continuing focus of research which would benefit from more comparison with frontier structures and regimes in other areas.  Multiple landscapes: Roman sites need to be seen in a broader landscape context, ‘looking beyond the fort’ and explored as nested and interlocking landscapes. This will allow exploration of frontier life and the changing worlds of the Roman period. To do justice to this resource requires two elements: o Development-control archaeology should look as standard at the hinterland of forts (up to c.1 km from the ‘core’), as sensitive areas and worthy of evaluation; examples such as Inveresk show the density of activity around such nodes. The interiors of camps should be extensively excavated as standard. o Integrated approaches to military landscapes are required, bringing in where appropriate topographical and aerial survey, LIDAR, geophysics, the use of stray and metal-detected finds, as well as fieldwalking and ultimately, excavation.  The Legacy of Rome: How did the longer term influence of the Romans, and their legacy, influence the formation, nature and organisation of the Pictish and other emergent kingdoms?

In Sweden, the Roma have the right to contribute to and influence policy measures that affect them. Authorities often fulfil their obligation to include Roma through the so-called reference groups. The authors see several problems with this model. First, the reference groups are deprived of agency, as they are often not involved at early stages in the planning, but rather informed and consulted on ready-made decisions. Second, an emphasis is placed on “Romani organisations” when nominating and selecting representatives, which encourages rapid creation of new organisations with few members and activities, little transparency, and affected by gate-keeping as the power is kept between a few individuals. Last, the emphasis on linguistic and cultural competence deprives many individuals of influence and the possibility of being heard, especially those who have been subject to harsh assimilation.

While the knowledge on immigrants’ integration consolidated through the last 50 years, the Roma studies and the research on the Roma inclusion seems at the beginning. The purpose of this research was to assess if and to what extent the Swiss experience in immigrants’ integration may inspire an efficient approach to Roma inclusion in the Romanian society. After highlighting conceptual vagueness, resemblance and difference in the overall social status of Romanian Roma and immigrants in Switzerland and official approaches to the integration or inclusion of each, the research concludes that the Romanian policy on Roma inclusion presumably can be better anchored in the integration conceptual framework and benefit from immigrants’ integration experience. The Romanian choice for framing its Roma policy as ‘inclusion’ rather than for ‘integration’ may be appropriate as it applies to a historic minority of citizens needing social justice. The use of an immigration integration policy as model for a Roma inclusion strategy is limited due to the stronger legit-imation of historic minorities for shared-ownership of public decision-making. That is the Swiss example of immigrants’ integration could only serve Romania as a minimum standard for its Roma inclusion strategy. It can benefit from the Swiss experience on immigrant's integration policy in terms of conception, coordination, monitoring and transparency may be beneficial, while the Roma political participation may find inspiration from the Swiss linguistic communities’ participatory mechanisms. The on-going reciprocal learning process connecting academia and public authorities able to transform science into action and experience in knowledge may inspire the Romanian authorities.

This paper discusses the remains of a ceramic assemblage associated with the cargo of a Late Roman trading vessel, discovered by the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (BSMAP) in 2017. Dating from the early 4th century AD, this previously undisturbed wreck is arguably the most comprehensive assemblage of a Late Roman trading vessel yet discovered outside of the Mediterranean. Through comparative analysis of 81 amphorae in the forward section of the wreck, this paper aims to draw further understanding of the maritime trade systems that operated between the major seas of the Eastern Roman empire.
