Polymer/clay nanocomposites have been explored extensively over the last two decades. Many studies report nanocomposite properties. However, studies on the effect of processing conditions are still limited. This study evaluates the effect of rotor type, rotor rotation (rpm) and mixing time on mechanical properties of polyethylene organoclay composites. Samples were fabricated using two different rotors; roller and Banbury, in an internal batch mixer at various mixing conditions. The analysis shows that the Banbury rotor improved mechanical properties more than the roller rotor. Shear and diffusion mechanism, as well as material degradation, were the controlling factors at different processing conditions.

Abstract Investigations of operating parameters of widely used sand mixers reveal a wide variability range in the values of parameters associated with their power demand. Power efficiency of manufacturing processes has received a great deal of attention lately, which encourages the research efforts to optimise this aspects of operation of machines and installations as well. In the first place these machines and installations have to work properly as a part of the process line- which applies also to moulding sand mixers. Experiments conducted by the authors suggest that the same goal can be achieved at variable energy input levels. To obtain information about the power demands of sand mixers requires the use of highly specialised equipment, methodology and result processing procedures. This study provides a brief characteristic of measurement equipment and results of measurements taken on a unit AG-015 (based on a roller mixer) and a laboratory rotor mixer.

Simulation analysis and parameter optimization are performed for the loading and mixing devices of a self-propelled total mixed ration mixer. To reveal the three-dimensional movement of silage material under the action of the loading cutter roller, the latter is modeled using SolidWorks software. ANSYS/LS-DYNA software is used to simulate the process of silage cutting, which is modeled using smoothed particle hydrodynamics coupled with the finite element method. The cutting force and power consumption are simulated, and the behavior of the equivalent strain of the silage is determined. The results showed that silage was broken up mainly by extrusion and shear force due to the loading cutter roller. The power consumption according to the simulation is consistent with the value from an empirical formula, confirming the validity of the proposed modeling method. To study the mixing performance and obtain the optimum parameters of the mixing device, the Hertz–Mindlin model is used for the interaction between material particles and mixing device. A three-factor, five-level method is used to optimize the mixing performance. Material-mixing time, loading rate, and auger speed are chosen as experimental factors and mixed uniformity as an evaluation index. It is found that auger speed and material mixing time have significant effects on mixing uniformity. These results provide reference values allowing the analysis of the crushing of silage and selection of the optimum parameters for mixing performance.

Roller compacted concrete for the construction of hydraulic and hydroelectric buildings is a composite material, which consists of a binder, fine aggregate (sand), coarse aggregate (gravel or crushed stone), water and special additives that provide the desired concrete workability and impart the required concrete performance properties. Concrete mixture is prepared at from concrete mixing plants strictly metered quantities of cement, water, additives and graded aggregates, whereupon they are delivered to the site laying Mixer Truck and sealing layers with each stack layer. The advantages of roller compaction technology should include the reduction of construction time, which allows fast commissioning construction projects, as well as reduce the amount of investment required. One of the main problems encountered in the process of roller compaction of the concrete mix is the need to provide the required adhesion strength between layers of concrete. This paper presents a method for determining the strength of adhesion between the concrete layers of different ages roller compacted concrete using axial tension. This method makes it possible to obtain objective and accurate results with a total thickness of layers of compacted concrete of up to 300…400 mm. Results from this method, studies have shown that the value of strength between the concrete layers in addition to the composition of the concrete and adhesion depends on the quality and the parallel end surfaces of the cylinder-models, which are mounted steel plates for axial tension, as well as the state of the contact surfaces of the concrete layer. The method can be used to determine the strength of interlayer adhesion in roller compacted concrete, which are used in the construction of dams and other hydraulic structures.

Mesin mixer campuran batako dan paving block merupakan suatu alat yang digunakan untuk membantu proses pencampuran antara semen, pasir dan air. Mesin ini dibuat dengan tujuan untuk membantu para pekerja ataupun masyarakat dalam proses pencampuran bahan-bahan material batako dan paving block yang biasanya dilakukan secara manual. Metode penelitian dilakukan dalam beberapa tahap yaitu studi pustaka dan studi lapangan. Tahap perancangan terdiri dari indentifikasi masalah, membuat konsep rancangan seperti desain rancangan, perhitungan elemen mesin dan gambar kerja. Komponen mesin yang digunakan dalam rancangan adalah sistem penggeraknya menggunakan motor diesel, pulley and belt, gearbox, coupling flange, channel L, Roller ball bearing, wadah silinder dan poros pengaduk. Wadah tempat pengaduk berupa silinder dirancang dan dibuat dengan pemilihan menggunakan bahan pelat baja dengan tebal 5 mm. Diameter wadah silinder ini adalah 1200 mm tinggi tabung 400 mm. Selain itu empat buah sistem pengaduk secara mekanis dirancang dan dibuat, selanjutnya pengaduk ini bekerja dengan metode rotasi atau gerak putar. Poros pemutar dan empat buah pelat pengaduk dirancang dan ditempatkan didalam silinder berfungsi sebagai pengaduk mekanis material. In cement industry, many grinding up systems are on operating now. The tradition process of tube mill grinding system is high energy consumption, so it’s low efficiency, especially in the final cement grinding process. The value and advantage of slag is recognized more and more, but it’s difficult to be grinded up. Furthermore, the disadvantage and shortages to grind up clinker compounded with slag to produce cement are obvious and adopted. The best process is to grind up slag, clinker separately. Then, these two kinds of powder are compounded by a mixer. Hereby, it introduces a design of the process to grind up clinker, slag by one roller mill.

Here, we synthesized a series of polymeric thermal stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) based on maleic anhydride derivatives, including N-phenylmaleimide (NPMI), N-p-chlorophenyl maleimide (NCIPMI), N-p-nitrophenyl maleimide (NNOPMI), dibutyltin maleate (DBTM) and dioctyltin maleate (DOTM). Five specimens were prepared by mixing and rolling through a blending machine and a double-roller mixer, respectively. These samples were first subjected to thermal degradation in a 180°C hot oven, and fractions were collected every 10 min, followed by spotting on a slip of test paper. From the degree of color change in the test paper, the influences of these compounds on the thermal stability of PVC were estimated and such mechanisms were also discussed.

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) has rapidly evolved from a concept to a material and a process which is used throughout the world for faster and more economical construction of dams. Currently, there are more than 250 RCC dams, completed or under construction, in the world. On the other hand, currently, there are only two RCC dams completed (Suç
ati and Cindere Dams) and two under construction (Beydag and Ç
ine Dam) in Turkey. RCC dams are constructed in a series of compacted layers usually 30 cm in thickness. Therefore, appropriate bonding of successive layers is important and as a result, in between successive layers a bedding mix is often used to fill the surface voids in both the compacted layer below and the covering layer above, as well as to bond the two successive layers together. This study presents an experimental investigation on the bonding efficiency of RCC with different bedding mixes. The Beydag Dam RCC mixture was taken as the model for the preparation of laboratory-made RCC specimens. In the experimental study, 15 cm cubic specimens were prepared in two layers. Each layer was compacted using an electro pneumatic demolition hammer for 30 seconds. Four different time intervals between placement and compaction of two successive layers and two different bedding mix types were the selected cases for investigation. While preparing the specimens, the second layer was placed and compacted 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 hours after the first layer was compacted. In between the two layers, two types of bedding mixes are placed in between previously compacted and freshly placed layer for joint treatment. One of the bedding mixes, having 200 kg/m3 cement content is termed poor while other one is termed rich having 400 kg/m3 cement content. RCC specimens are then subjected to compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and permeability tests. As a result of the experimental program, it was found that
a rich bedding mix was a more effective bonding agent between compacted RCC layers than the poor bedding mix for all time intervals between layers. Furthermore, it was concluded that bonding efficiency of RCC is not too dependent on time interval between layer compactions up to 16 hours. Finally, splitting tensile strength and sorptivity tests are shown to be applicable test methods for determination of bonding efficiency of RCC specimens if there is a definite bedding layer in between freshly placed and formerly compacted RCC.

The subject of the diploma thesis is the study of moisture resistance of macrodefect-free (MDF) cements based on calcium-aluminate cement and polyvinylalcohol used as polymer. MDF cements are perspective materials providing unique properties relative to traditional cement pastes with great potential to incoming constructional utilization. But it is known that MDF cements exhibit sensitivity to water, with swelling and reduction of strength. Therefore the work is aimed in monitoring of an organic polymer effect on the moisture resistance of MDF materials and phase changes. Aluminate cement (SECAR 51) and polyvinylalcohol/acetate copolymer have been used for the MDF cement preparation. The moisture resistance of model MDF cement samples was investigated at two different curing conditions: in the moist atmosphere and immersed in water. The influence of composition and individual curing on the properties of model MDF cement samples was observed. The characterization of MDF samples was based especially on test of flexural strength, FT-IR, EDAX and optical microscopy analyses.

This research investigates grades kindergarten - 5 English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Education (GE) co-teachers' perceptions of one another's roles, strengths, and areas for improvement in co-teaching academic language and content to English language learners (ELLs) in the GE classroom. Theories of social constructivism and cooperative learning guide this study, which approaches co-teachers' perceptions as a function of how they make meaning of their social interaction and experiences (Vyogotsky, 1978; Villa, Thousand, & Nevin, 2004). Using QUAN-qual sequential explanatory design, this descriptive study uses survey methodology and small-scale follow-up interviews to create an illustrative, descriptive portrait of ESL and GE teachers' perceptions of one another's roles and professional development needs. Quantitative and qualitative survey results are triangulated with qualitative interview findings.

The integrated findings illuminate the areas of convergence and divergence in ESL and GE teachers' perceptions as co-teachers of ELLs in the GE classroom. The main conclusions are discussed with regard to existing literature on co-teaching. Overall, ESL and GE teachers appeared to have a general understanding of one another's roles, yet some perceptions diverged with regard to sharing responsibilities and whether the GE teacher was the "primary instructor". In addition, this study concludes that despite availability of some common planning time, co-teachers frequently desired to improve the quality and quantity of their co-planning, co-teaching, and reflection on students' needs. Co-teaching strengths that were identified include openness, flexibility, and the ability to differentiate instruction. However, in order to improve co-teaching, both ESL and GE teachers perceive the need to gain skills and knowledge in one another's areas of expertise. Data analysis shows that co-teachers' desired professional development topics and types of offerings interrelate thematically with perceived strengths and areas for improvement.

The study concludes with a discussion of implications for school administrators and teacher educators, including pre-service teacher educators, who want to support ESL and GE co-teachers. The discussion also addresses the implications for ESL and GE teachers whose co-teaching practice may benefit from reflection on the findings of the study. Finally, directions for future research emanating from this study are offered.

Grounded in self-determination theory and achievement goal theory, the purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the underlying motivational processes from social environments created by coaches, peers, and parents to motivational outcomes in high school athletes, with an emphasis on the relative influence of social agents in basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness). The quantitative part of this study tested a hierarchical model of high school sport motivation in a final sample of 311 student athletes (204 boys, 107 girls) using structural equation modeling: social factors (coach-, peer-, and parent-created motivational climates) -> psychological mediators (need satisfaction and frustration) -> types of motivation (autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and amotivation) -> consequences (subjective vitality, athlete burnout, and intention to drop out). Invariance across gender and across team type (varsity vs. non-varsity) was also tested. Adequate model fits were achieved in separate "brighter side" and "darker side" models across the overall sample, gender, and team type. The follow-up qualitative part of this study explored "how" beyond "what" coaches, peers, and parents contribute to the social environments, need frustration, and negative motivational outcomes in sport in a subsample of 37 student athletes (24 boys, 13 girls) who reported high amotivation/burnout and higher than average dropout intentions in the quantitative survey. Content analysis and observation were conducted to interpret the focus group interview data among athletes across gender and team type. The results of both quantitative and qualitative parts were integrated and compared to summarize the roles of coaches, peers, and parents in the "brighter and darker sides" of athletic experience in high school athletes.

In the contemporary scene, alongside the crisis of political communication and the traditional forms of participation, the transformation of the formats and languages of telepolitics and the increasingly more widespread access of the citizens to interactive platforms that liberate them from the role of mere spectators of the political debate, have come to assume major significance. This book proposes an approach of meditation and mixed methods research, already validated within the framework of the project «Against political communication. Rethinking participation in the age of the old and new media» (PRIN 2007). The aim is to explore the ways in which political communication is currently exploiting the media ecosystem, and the role of this new media equilibrium in the construction of political concepts and political participation on the part of the citizens.

The role of vitamins, macro- and microelements, enzyme preparations, probiotics, prebiotics, antibiotics, organic acids, antioxidants, emulsifiers and other sources of biologically active substances in poultry nutrition is shown. Both nutritional factors that reduce the immune system and the causes of major feed diseases, which are related to the quality of feed, with violations in the rationing of nutrients and minerals, are indicated, and also biologically active substances, technologies for feeding and keeping poultry, methods of their prevention are given. It is addressed to specialists and managers of poultry farms, feed industry enterprises, researchers, postgraduates and students.

During the Late Middle Ages a unique type of ‘mixed media’ recycled and remnant art arose in houses of religious women in the Low Countries: enclosed gardens. They date from the time of Emperor Charles V and are unique examples of ‘anonymous’ female art, devotion and spirituality. A hortus conclusus (or enclosed garden) represents an ideal, paradisiacal world. Enclosed Gardens are retables, sometimes with painted side panels, the central section filled not only with narrative sculpture, but also with all sorts of trinkets and hand-worked textiles.Adornments include relics, wax medallions, gemstones set in silver, pilgrimage souvenirs, parchment banderoles, flowers made from textiles with silk thread, semi-precious stones, pearls and quilling (a decorative technique using rolled paper). The ensemble is an impressive and one-of-a-kind display and presents as an intoxicating garden. The sixteenth-century horti conclusi of the Mechelen Hospital sisters are recognized Masterpieces and are extremely rare, not alone at a Belgian but even at a global level. They are of international significance as they provide evidence of devotion and spirituality in convent communities in the Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth century. They are an extraordinary tangible expression of a devotional tradition. The highly individual visual language of the enclosed gardens contributes to our understanding of what life was like in cloistered communities. They testify to a cultural identity closely linked with mystical traditions allowing us to enter a lost world very much part of the culture of the Southern Netherlands. This book is the first full survey of the enclosed gardens and is the result of year-long academic research.

Recently, public policies of urban regeneration have intensified and multiplied. They are being promoted with the aim to start social and economic dynamics within the local context which is subject to intervention. From the empirical analysis, we realise that such activities are mainly implemented by three subjects or by mixed coalitions (public institutions, actors of the third sector and companies). Within them, each player is moved by a multiplicity of interests and goals that go beyond their own nature – public interest, market and mutualism – and tend to redefine themselves, thus becoming hybrid forms of production of value (social, economic, cultural). By studying a number Italian and Catalan cases, this essay deals with the theory that, under specific conditions and configurations, a collaborative direction – of organization, production and design – would give life to successful procedures, even without the identification of a one-best-way. The collaboration is not simply a choice of operation, but a real production method which mobilises social resources to create hybrid solutions – between state, market and society – to complex issues that could not be faced solely with the use of the rationale of action of one among the three actors. In this framework, the systems of relations and interactions between players and shared capital become an essential condition for the success of every initiative of urban redevelopment, or failure thereof. Such initiatives are brought to life by the strategic role of individuals who foster connections as well as the dissemination of non-redundant information between social networks, and collective and individual actors which would otherwise be separated and barely able to communicate and collaborate with each other. In addition to the functions carried out by knowledge brokers, that have been extensively described in organisational studies and economic sociology, the aforementioned figures act as real social enzymes, that is to say, they handle the available information and function as catalysts of social processes of production of knowledge. Moreover, they increase the reaction speed, working on mechanisms which control the spontaneity.

Focusing on language and media in Asian Russia, particularly in Buryat territories, this book engages debates about the role of minority media in society, alternative visions of modernity, and the impact of media on everyday language use. The book demonstrates that language and the production, circulation, and consumption of media are practices by which residents of the region perform and negotiate competing possible identities. What languages should be used in newspapers, magazines, or radio and television broadcasts? Who should produce them? What kinds of publics are and are not possible through media? How exactly do discourses move into, out of, and through the media to affect everyday social practices? The book addresses these questions through a rich ethnography of the Russian Federation's Buryat territories, a multilingual and multiethnic region on the Mongolian border with a complex relationship to both Europe and Asia. The book shows that belonging in Asian Russia is a dynamic process that one cannot capture analytically by using straightforward categories of ethnolinguistic identity.

Abstract Non-native plants rarely escape damage by herbivores. Instead, upon arrival in a new region, they begin to acquire new enemies, replacing those they have lost during their migration. These herbivores can include both natives to the new region and species that have themselves been accidentally or deliberately introduced from elsewhere, potentially including examples originating from the invader's original range. Shifts of new enemies from other hosts can occur over a range of timescales, depending in part on whether evolutionary change is required, but are likely to be faster for plants that are widespread and phylogenetically related to a herbivore's original host, and faster for generalist herbivores than for specialists. The occurrence of herbivores is not necessarily uniform across an invader's range; instead, they may be less diverse or abundant in host populations that are geographically or ecologically marginal, though existing evidence is mixed. Collectively, these new suites of herbivores can affect the growth and fitness of invaders, both directly by damaging them and indirectly by attacking their competitors. Studies comparing the demographic consequences of herbivory for successful vs unsuccessful invaders may help to clarify how often such impacts limit invasiveness. The view that an invader enters 'enemy-free' space is inaccurate; instead, persistence and spread of non-native plants often may be affected by the novel and changing assemblage of herbivores that they acquire within their new distribution.

AbstractHistorically, Switzerland’s population and cantonal system have been characterised by mixed denominational distribution (Roman Catholics and Protestants). Even if the two main denominations have not always coexisted harmoniously, and despite internal differences, Switzerland is nowadays the most competitive (prosperous) country worldwide with well-recognised political, economic, and social stability.The Swiss case explored the nexuses of prosperity and of a religiously mixed society in which the Protestant Reformation played a prominent historical role in shaping federal institutions. Following the 1848 anti-clerical Constitution, many Conservative Catholics remained in mountainous and rural areas, in an attempt to keep the ancient order. The Catholic ancient order included maintaining the pervasive influence of the Roman Church-State on virtually every moral and social aspect, including education (i.e. the “maintenance of ignorance”). In turn, liberals and Protestants mostly remained in flat areas that were subsequently industrialised. Currently, the historical Protestant cantons tend to be the most competitive, and the mountainous Roman Catholic cantons the least competitive, in the Swiss Confederation. Historically mixed confessional cantons (e.g. Thurgau and St. Gallen) perform in the middle of the cantonal ranking of competitiveness (11th and 13th, respectively, out of 26 cantons). Protestantism in Switzerland may have also contributed to prosperity via democratisation, state secularism and the creation of trust and moral standards. Yet, the influence of Protestantism owes more to its accumulated historical impact on institutions than to the proportion of current followers.

Viscous liquids have to be homogenized in continuous operations in many branches of processing industries; and therefore, fluid mixing plays a critical role in the success or failure of many industrial processes. The use of static mixers has been utilized over a wide range of applications from simple blending to complex chemical reactions. Generally, a static mixer consists of a number of equal stationary units, placed on the inside of a pipe or channel in order to promote mixing of flowing fluid streams. These mixers have low maintenance and operating costs, low space requirements and no moving parts. A range of designs exists for a wide range of specific applications. The shape of the elements determines the character of the fluid motion and thus determines the effectiveness of the mixer. There are several key parameters in the design procedure of a static mixer. Some of the most important ones are: the degree of mixing of working fluids, pressure drop across the mixer, and residence time distribution of fluid elements. An ideal static mixer provides a highly mixed material with low pressure drop and similar traveling history for all fluid elements. To choose a static mixer for a given application or in order to design a new static mixer, besides experimentation, it is possible to use powerful computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools to study the performance of static mixers. This paper extends previous studies by the authors on industrial static mixers and illustrates how static mixing processes of single-phase viscous liquids can be simulated numerically. Using different measuring tools, the global performance and costs of two static mixers are studied.

LibertyWorks®, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Corporation, first studied CMC (ceramic matrix composite) exhaust mixers for potential weight benefits in 2008. Oxide CMC potentially offered weight reduction, higher temperature capability, and the ability to fabricate complex-shapes for increased mixing and noise suppression. In 2010, NASA was pursuing the reduction of NOx emissions, fuel burn, and noise from turbine engines in Phase I of the Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) Project (within the Integrated Systems Research Program). ERA subtasks, including those focused on CMC components, were being formulated with the goal of maturing technology from Proof of Concept Validation (Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL 3)) to System/Subsystem or Prototype Demonstration in a Relevant Environment (TRL 6). In April 2010, the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) and Rolls-Royce (RR) jointly initiated a CMC Exhaust System Validation Program within the ERA Project, teaming on CMC exhaust mixers for subsonic jet engines. The initial objective was to fabricate and characterize the performance of a 0.25 scale low bypass exhaust system that was based on a RR advanced design, with a 16-lobe oxide/oxide CMC mixer and tail cone (center body). Support Services, LLC (Allendale, MI) and COI Ceramics, Inc. (COIC) supported the design of a mixer assembly that consisted of the following oxide/oxide CMC components mounted on separate metallic attachment flanges: a) a lobed mixer and outer fan shrouds, and b) a tail cone. TRL 4 (Component/Subscale Component Validation in a Laboratory Environment) was achieved in a cost-effective manner through subscale rig validation of the aerodynamic and acoustic performance via testing at ASE FluiDyne (Plymouth, MN) and at NASA GRC, respectively. This encouraged the NASA/ RR/COIC team to move to the next phase of component development; full scale CMC mixer design for a RR AE3007 engine. COIC fabricated the full scale CMC mixer, which was vibration tested at GRC under conditions simulating the structural and dynamic environment of a mixer. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB)) provided test support by assisting with instrumentation and performing 3D laser vibrometry to identify the mixer mode shapes and modal frequencies over the engine operating range. Successful vibration testing demonstrated COIC’s new process for fabricating full scale CMC mixers and the durability of the Oxide CMC component at both room and elevated temperatures. A TRL≈5 (Component Validation in a Relevant Environment) was attained and the CMC mixer was cleared for ground testing on a Rolls-Royce AE3007 engine for performance evaluation to achieve TRL 6.

Many processing applications call for the addition of small quantities of chemicals to working fluid. Hence, fluid mixing plays a critical role in the success or failure of these processes. An optimal combination of turbulent dispersion down to eddies of the Kolmogoroff scale and molecular diffusion would yield fast mixing on a molecular scale which in turn favors the desired reactions. Helical static mixers can be used for those applications. The range of practical flow Reynolds numbers for these mixers in industry is usually from very small (Re ∼ 0) to moderate values (Re ∼ 5000). In this study, a helical static mixer is investigated numerically using Lagrangian methods to characterize mixer performance under turbulent flow regime conditions. A numerical simulation of turbulent flows in helical static mixers is employed. The model solves the three-dimensional, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, closed with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, using a second-order-accurate finite-volume numerical method. Numerical simulations are carried out for a six-element mixer, and the computed results are analyzed to elucidate the complex, three-dimensional features of the flow. Using a variety of predictive tools, mixing results are obtained and the performance of static mixer under turbulent flow condition is studied.

The range of practical flow Reynolds numbers for helical static mixers in industry is usually from very small (Re ≈ 0) to moderate values (e.g. Re = 5,000). However, it has been found that the flow regime within helical static mixers is turbulent for relatively low Reynolds numbers, compared to the flow inside a pipe with no mixing elements present. This paper extends previous studies by the authors on the industrial helical static mixer. Its purpose is to present an improved understanding of the turbulent flow pattern for single-phase liquids through the mixer. Three-dimensional finite volume simulations are used to study the performance of the mixer using different turbulent models. Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) model is applied to the flow in an industrial helical static mixer to calculate the flow velocities, pressure drops, etc. Using a variety of predictive tools, the mixing results are obtained. Also, the accuracy and global performance of several different turbulent models are compared against the LES model.

Roll diameter surface deviations can generate significant strip flatness defects in the cold rolling of thin gauge metal sheet. The resolution of roll profile deviations can vary between 0.001 and 0.01 mm. In such a high-fidelity contact problem, lack of availability of the measured data, and high computational cost in using the data in simulations, make it very difficult to predict the effects of such deviations. Nonetheless, an understanding of how high-fidelity roll profile deviations can lead to rolled sheet flatness defects is very important since such defects may be unrecoverable. This paper evaluates the ability of a simplified mixed finite element roll-stack model to predict contact behavior effects on the rolled sheet created by high-fidelity roll profile deviations. The simplified finite element method combines 3D Timoshenko beam elements with Winkler elastic foundations. The beam elements are used to capture bending and shear deformation, while the Winkler foundations are tested for their ability to accurately and efficiently capture the high-fidelity flattening-type contact behavior. Results for a simple roll and plate contact case study indicate favorable comparison with the results obtained from a large-scale commercial finite element simulation, and yet the methods requires a small fraction of the associated computing time and memory. The work also offers significant insights into the sheet flatness defects that can arise in cold rolling because of low magnitude but high fidelity roll diameter machining errors.

Viscous liquids have to be homogenized in continuous operations in many branches of processing industries. Consequently, fluid mixing plays a critical role in the success or failure of many industrial processes. The use of static mixers has been utilized over a wide range of applications such as continuous mixing, blending, heat and mass transfer processes, chemical reactions, etc. This paper illustrates how static mixing processes of single-phase viscous liquids can be simulated numerically, and presents the flow pattern of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian single-phase liquids through a helical static mixer, and provides useful information that can be extracted from the simulation results. Three-dimensional finite volume simulations are used to study the performance of the mixer. The CFD code used here solves the Navier-Stokes equations for both laminar and turbulent flow cases. The turbulent flow cases were solved using k–ω and Reynolds Stress models. The flow properties are calculated for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. The calculated pressure drop is in good agreement with existing experimental data.

The use of static mixers has been utilized over a wide range of applications such as continuous mixing, blending, heat and mass transfer processes, chemical reactions, etc. Consequences of improper mixing include non-reproducible processing conditions and lowered product quality, resulting in the need for more elaborate downstream purification processes and increased waste disposal costs. This paper extends previous studies by the authors on an industrial helical static mixer and illustrates how static mixing processes of single-phase viscous liquids can be simulated numerically. It also intends to present an improved understanding of the turbulent flow pattern for single-phase liquids through the mixer. Three-dimensional finite volume simulations are used to study the performance of the mixer for a range of practical Reynolds numbers, using three different turbulent models: k–ε model, k–ω model, and RSM model. The accuracy, global performance and costs of the different turbulent models have been examined. The flow velocities, pressure drops, etc. are calculated for each model. The calculated pressure drop of each case is compared with experimental results. Using different tools, the mixing results obtained from the different models are studied and compared.

Environmental regulation and high fuel cost are among the leading driving forces behind the demand of energy efficient vehicles. Together with new engine hardware technologies, engine oil is expected to significantly contribute to improving vehicle fuel economy. New fuel-efficient engine oils are often formulated with advanced additives and low viscosity base oils. Understanding the lubrication performance at key engine components such as the cam and follower in valve train systems becomes critically important to ensure engine durability with the new fuel-efficient low viscosity oils. A full numerical mixed lubrication analysis of the cam and roller follower pair is conducted using the three dimensional line contact mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model. The results show significant effects of surface roughness, topography, slide-to-roll ratio, and viscosity grade on lubricant film, contact pressure, and subsurface stress.

Using unique longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data, we examine the role that low learning plays in driving dropout in Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam. Regression analysis using IRT-linked test scores and data on schooling attainment and dropout shows a strong, significant association with one standard deviation higher test scores associated with 50 percent lower odds of dropping out between the ages of 8 and 12, and a similar association between the ages of 12 and 15. Qualitative analysis indicates a direct relationship between low learning and dropout, with children and parents choosing to discontinue school when they realize how little is being learned. Qualitative findings also show that low learning interacts with and exacerbates more proximate causes of dropout, with low learning often contributing to choices of early marriage (for girls) and of leaving school to work (for both genders), with families making practical decisions about which options will best provide for children in the long run. Finally, learning, work, and poverty often interact, as the need to work to help provide for the household reduces the opportunities to learn, and low learning tilts the opportunity cost of time in favor of working. These findings suggest that low learning may play a larger role in dropout decisions, by underlying and interacting with other causes, than has been typically recognized.

Childhood asthma is a significant public health problem in the United States. Barriers to effective asthma management in children include the need for caregivers to identify and manage diverse environmental triggers and promote appropriate use of preventive asthma medications. Although health care providers may introduce asthma treatments and care plans, many providers lack the time and capacity to educate caregivers about asthma in an ongoing, sustained manner. To help address these complexities of asthma care, many providers and caregivers rely on patient navigators (defined as persons who provide patients with a particular set of services and who address barriers to care) (Dohan & Schrag, 2005). Despite growing interest in their value for chronic disease management, researchers and providers know little about how or what benefits patient navigators can provide to caregivers in managing asthma in children. To explore this issue, we conducted a mixed-method evaluation involving focus groups and a survey with caregivers of children with moderate-to-severe asthma who were enrolled in the Merck Childhood Asthma Network Initiative (MCAN). Findings suggest that patient navigators may support children’s asthma management by providing individualized treatment plans and hands-on practice, improving caregivers’ understanding of environmental triggers and their mitigation, and giving clear, accessible instructions for proper medication management. Study results may help to clarify and further develop the role of patient navigators for the effective management of asthma in children.

International climate finance plays a key role in enabling the implementation of adaptation measures. However, while there is a common metric for gauging the effectiveness of finance for mitigation – greenhouse gas emission reduction per unit of funding – no corresponding metric exists for adaptation. Instead, assessments of what works best in adaptation finance focus either on procedural aspects of funding modalities, such as equity in the allocation of funding, or on the extent to which specific adaptation activities produce the desired results. This mixed methods systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of adaptation finance and bridge the gap between those two approaches. It involves a transparent and comprehensive synthesis of the academic and grey literature on how different characteristics of adaptation projects in sub-Saharan Africa – and finance for those projects – affect adaptation outcomes, particularly in terms of risk and vulnerability to climate change impacts. Finalised adaptation projects funded by a set of the multilateral climate funds and two bilateral donors (United Kingdom and Sweden) are the focus of this review. The findings can help inform the future design and implementation of adaptation activities as well as funding decisions.

ocial investment in East Africa is a nascent but fast-growing phenomenon with immense potential to realize the achievement of the sustainable development goals. It plays a very important role in the financing of a plethora of development sectors in East Africa, for instance, financial inclusion and poverty eradication, health and well-being, education, responsible energy production and consumption in the region. This article applies a mixed methods approach to carry out a non-exhaustive landscape analysis of the social investment market in East Africa with a keen focus on Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Based on relevant literature, available secondary data and a survey administered to social investors, this article applies the basic social investment market framework to highlight the dominant players in the demand and supply market spheres. The findings show that the supply of investment capital is misaligned with the demand from organizations and businesses and demand outweighs the supply. This article further analyses the challenges faced by the social investment players and also provides viable recommendations to drive the scale of social investment in East Africa.

Earth’s high latitudes are projected to experience warmer and wetter summers in the future but ramifications for soil thermal processes and permafrost thaw are poorly understood. Here we present 2750 end of summer thaw depths representing a range of vegetation characteristics in Interior Alaska measured over a 5-year period. This included the top and third wettest summers in the 91-year record and three summers with precipitation close to mean historical values. Increased rainfall led to deeper thaw across all sites with an increase of 0.7 ± 0.1 cm of thaw per cm of additional rain. Disturbed and wetland sites were the most vulnerable to rain-induced thaw with ~1 cm of surface thaw per additional 1 cm of rain. Permafrost in tussock tundra, mixed forest, and conifer forest was less sensitive to rain-induced thaw. A simple energy budget model yields seasonal thaw values smaller than the linear regression of our measurements but provides a first-order estimate of the role of rain-driven sensible heat fluxes in high-latitude terrestrial permafrost. This study demonstrates substantial permafrost thaw from the projected increasing summer precipitation across most of the Arctic region.
