Анотація:
As a particular type of gatekeeper, rock critics play a significant role in shaping the representations of artists for an admittedly small, but influential, population, as well as establishing an artist's place in music history. In Sound Effects, Simon Frith (1983) maintains that rock critics are ‘opinion leaders’ and are the ‘ideological gatekeepers’ of the community for which they write. Additionally, I argue that rock critics function as Gramscian ‘organic intellectuals’ who articulate the ideas held by the population of which they are a part (Gramsci 1971, pp. 5-14). The community that rock critics represent and speak for is made up of an overlapping network that comprises those connected with college radio, record collectors, local music scene participants, musicians and various record company employees, among others. Frith (1996, p. 18) argues in Performing Rites that if ‘social relations are constituted in cultural practice, then our sense of identity and difference is established in the process of discrimination’. By understanding the ways in which evaluations are made within the communities that rock critics are a part of, we can gain a better understanding of the communities themselves. Because there are no sustained scholarly writings that examine rock criticism in North America from a historical, sociological or communicative perspective, it is important to begin examining the profession of the rock critic, as well as the discourse generated by rock criticism.

Traditional subsidence range prediction by stagger angle doesn’t adapt to production situation in deep mining, the angle is usually large. Analyze the lateral support force of the moving bulk solid in the subsidence pit based on maintaining sidewall rock stability of subsidence pit. While bulk solid thickness of subsidence pit is not less than critical bulk solid column, the active pressure and passive pressure of bulk solid prevent the scaling of sidewall rock together. By analyzing the measured data of subsidence range of Xishimen mine, the height of critic bulk solid column relates to stability of rock, sidewall angle of goaf, internal friction angle, and rock loose coefficient. In deep mining, that filling subsidence pit with waste rock can lower the critical depth and control surface subsidence range.

Water inflow was the main damage during blasting excavation of subsea tunnel, disturbance due to blasting could also induce water inflow. Based on the blasting mechanism of water-bearing fractured rock-mass, stress state and breaking-down process of the fracture was analyzed, which was affected by dynamic stress field (blasting effect) and static stress field (water and in-situ stress). With the affect of overlapping dynamic and static stress field, the calculation formula of the critical inner water pressure in water inflow was presented. At last, using these formulas, critic water press and radial extent were calculated of water-bearing fractured rock-mass in Xiamen subsea tunnel.

Rock and pop music in the USSR and eastern Europe has become an area of increasing interest to both the western mass media and cultural studies since glasnost, perestroika, the collapse of the Eastern bloc Communist regimes and the constitution of new western-styled democratic governments. This is largely because rock music has represented probably the most widespread vehicle of youth rebellion, resistance and independence behind the Iron Curtain, both in terms of providing an enhanced political context for the often banned sounds of British and American rock, and in the development of home-grown musics built on western foundations but resonating within their own highly charged political contexts. As the East German critic Peter Wicke has claimed,Because of the intrinsic characteristics of the circumstances within which rock music is produced and consumed, this cultural medium became, in the GDR, the most suitable vehicle for forms of cultural and political resistance that could not be controlled by the state. Анотація:
Coal mining activities have intensified, and underground mining depths have increased, posing significant challenges for mitigating rock burst hazard. To address this issue, this paper proposes an improved comprehensive weighting prediction (CF-TOPSIS) method that predicts weight and grade indices for rock burst evaluation. The study introduces a novel variable coefficient method to optimize the conflict response problem and employs correlation forward and other techniques to minimize errors caused by large data differences. Based on these, the CRITIC objective weight algorithm model is established, and FAHP is used to optimize weighting factors to make the index weight of rock burst more reasonable, thus enhancing the accuracy of hazard assessment for working faces. Results from engineering examples show that the prediction results combined with field drill cutting methods and microseismic monitoring data verify the accuracy of the proposed method, indicating its feasibility and effectiveness in predicting rock burst hazard in underground coal mines.

Анотація:
Aiming at the uncertainty in the existing tunnel surrounding rock stability evaluation methods and the inability to make scientific explanations in the process of determining the weights of multiple evaluation indicators, this paper combines subjective weighting based on the nonlinear characteristics of the surrounding rock stability evaluation criteria. Based on the advantages of the method AHP and the objective weighting method CRITIC, a comprehensive weighting method with multiple evaluation indicators is proposed, which is integrated with the multidimensional normal cloud model to establish a surrounding rock stability evaluation method for the improved weighted multidimensional cloud model and accurately obtain the safety level of tunnel surrounding rock construction. The multidimensional cloud model based on improved weighting not only solves the two major problems of randomness and ambiguity in surrounding rock stability evaluation but also fully considers the influence of the information contained in each evaluation factor on the results. The surrounding rock stability evaluation method in this paper is applied to the tunnel construction of the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway and Jinan Expressway connecting line construction project, and the evaluation results have a scientific guiding role for construction risk control.

O objeto de trabalho é o jornalismo e seu ethos, através do subgênero de cultura. A partir de sua manifestação e do cabedal teórico selecionado analisamos o cumprimento, ou não, da proposição jornalística. Readers dismayed by the appearance of a review essay on hipsters, hippies, and rock music in the pages of Modern Intellectual History should take a deep breath (you may inhale) and consider the following passage from John Dewey's 1934 Art as Experience: Any idea that ignores the necessary role of intelligence in production of works of art is based upon identification of thinking with use of one special kind of material, verbal signs and words. To think effectively in terms of relations of qualities is as severe a demand upon thought as to think in terms of symbols, verbal and mathematical. Indeed, since words are equally manipulated in mechanical ways, the production of a work of genuine art probably demands more intelligence than does most of the so-called thinking that goes on among those who pride themselves on being “intellectuals.”It's impossible to know what Dewey would have thought had he lived beyond his ninety-two years and confronted the rock music and counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. Would he have found “intelligence” at work in “acid rock” or hippie culture? Or would he have reacted as rock critic Greil Marcus did in the famous opening line of his review of Bob Dylan's 1970 Self Portrait album: “What is this shit?” I’d like to think he’d have given the music a listen, if not at the Fillmore then perhaps on his home stereo. After all, Dewey had this to say about music: “Music, having sound as its medium, thus necessarily expresses in a concentrated way the shocks and instabilities, the conflicts and resolutions, that are the dramatic changes enacted upon the more enduring background of nature and human life.” If any music expressed the shocks, instabilities, and conflicts of its day—and did so “in a concentrated way”—it was rock ’n’ roll. In fact, sonic culture had a privileged place in Dewey's aesthetics as an expression of the emotional life of individuals and communities. “Generically speaking, what is seen stirs emotion indirectly, through interpretation and allied idea. Sound agitates directly, as a commotion of the organism itself.” A philosopher who refused to sever sensory experience from cognition might well have considered whether somewhere in the commotion of rock culture there was also thinking. The question for historians committed to that proposition today is how and where to locate thinking in all the feedback.

Le metal symphonique est un sous-genre de musique metal qui a la particularité de compter une majorité de groupes où le chant est tenu par une femme : 80% en moyenne, se présentant à la fois comme une spécificité dans une culture musicale majoritairement masculine, autant qu’une régularité dans les musiques populaires où la proportion de chanteuses parmi les musiciennes en représente la grande majorité. Cette thèse a donc pour objectif de mesurer le rôle des femmes d’une part et de vocaliste d’autre part dans la définition d’un genre musical, au prisme d’une approche culturelle des musiques metal d’une part, et de leur situation en France d’autre part, des débuts du metal symphonique en 1996 à nos jours. Musique la plus détestée des Français, le metal compte essentiellement sur ses propres réseaux pour se développer : la presse spécialisée et la scène locale live. L’une et l’autre sont analysées dans cette thèse, entre discours promotionnels et évaluatifs de la presse sur les disques et production de concerts sur le sol français, de l’accueil des groupes étrangers à l’autoproduction locale. Ce travail tend ainsi à mesurer non seulement le rôle des chanteuses en tant qu’interprètes et créatrices de musique mais également leur implication dans l’activité d’une scène souvent présentée comme masculine, où leur place centrale mais négociée suggère d’en nuancer la domination. Complétée d’une enquête par questionnaire et entretiens, cette thèse discute enfin la notion de « goût féminin » et de « féminisation » d’un genre et d’une scène dans une approche compréhensive
Symphonic metal is a subgenre of metal music, which has the particularity of presenting a majority groups lead by female singers (80% on average). This feature is common to both this predominantly male culture, and to popular music more broadly, as the great majority of female musicians tend to be singers. This dissertation aims to measure the role played by women and by singers in the shaping of a musical genre, through a cultural approach of metal culture and of its situation in France, from the genre’s inception in 1996 to the present day.As the most hated genre of music in France, metal must rely mainly on its own networks in order to subsist and foster in this country: its press and local live scenes. Through the analysis of these two elements, this study considers promotional and evaluative media discourses on metal recordings and the production of concerts in France, from foreign bands touring around the country to the grassroots production of local events. Its aim is to consider not only the role female singers play as performers and creators, but also their involvement in the life of a scene often considered as masculine: their position, both central and negotiated, tends to limit the situation of domination. Through a complementary, comprehensive approach based on a questionnaire and interviews, this thesis also discusses the notions of “feminine taste” and of the “feminization” of a genre and a scene

Babel is a work for rock ‘n’ roll band (two electric guitars, electric bass, drum set), four soprano singers, and a twenty-one instrument mixed chamber ensemble. The 50-minute composition is based on the Tower of Babel story in Genesis 11:1-9, and the four-movement structure is derived from the form of this narrative. The first movement, “building rebellion,” establishes man’s intent to build a grand city and tower in a rebellion against God, while the second movement, “seeing/coming down,” describes the all-seeing God’s knowledge of man’s rebellion and God’s descent to the city. Movements three and four, “confusion” and “scatter,” depict the actions of God, confusing humankind’s language and scattering him over the earth. This project fuses rock ‘n’ roll influences with contemporary classical improvisation, creating a work that is sonically and dynamically excessive. One compositional goal was to use small amounts of material as the impetus for directed improvisation, which would be developed to create intricate and evolving textures. Each movement’s score is confined to a single page of music per part, necessitating highly graphic and aleatoric notation. The musical history and musicianship of each player greatly shapes the sonic outcome of Babel. Rigorous structure was mixed with extra-musical associations to create intricate layers of musical and metaphorical meanings. Every decision regarding form, pitch, rhythm, and improvisatory state is linked to a meaningful mathematical, philosophical, or theological idea. Out of the intention to illustrate a multi-layered, Biblical text interpreted in vastly different ways, came a complex work of art that challenges, yet welcomes, performers and listeners of all kinds.

With the increased availability of computers of various sizes, it is becoming more common to predict the responses of geotechnical structures using numerical analyses which incorporate more realistic models of soil behaviour. The main objective of this research is to develop and evaluate a series of unified critical state models. These models are then used to solve some typical boundary value problems in geotechnical engineering. The new models are based on a critical state model called CASM which was formulated based on both the state parameter concept and a non associated flow rule. The main feature of CASM is that a single set of yield and plastic potential functions is used to model the behaviour of clay and sand under both drained and undrained loading conditions. These models are developed by incorporating a new non-linear elasticity rule, the combined hardening concept and the bounding surface plasticity theory. A new non-linear elasticity rule for clay materials is introduced into CASM, this gives a better prediction on the behaviour of soil. The new combined volumetric-deviatoric hardening model is named CASM-d and provides a better prediction of the behaviour of lightly overconsolidated clays and loose sands. The new bounding surface model is named CASM-b and provides a more realistic prediction of soil behaviour inside the state boundary surface. The new cyclic bounding surface model is named CASM-c and provides a good prediction of soil behaviour under cyclic loading conditions. To evaluate their adequacy, CASM and its extensions are implemented into a finite element package called CRISP. This program was specifically developed to incorporate the critical state type of constitutive models. The analyses of a variety of typical geotechnical engineering problems are carried out to further check the validity of the new constitutive models. The models prove themselves to be very robust and useful tools for solving a wide range of practical geotechnical problems under different loading conditions.

O presente texto teve por intuito estudar a revista Rolling Stone, editada no Brasil entre dezembro de 1971 e janeiro de 1973. Especificamente, procurou-se, ao longo do trabalho, analisar a forma como a revista integrou a cena rock carioca do início da década de setenta, ao promover e registrar a atividade de artistas, colaborando para a difusão do rock produzido por aqui. Esse período registra uma marcante movimentação jovem transnacional influenciada pela contracultura, cujo ideário difundido circulava via música, livros e publicações. Também podemos identificar neste momento histórico, o desenvolvimento do mercado de bens simbólicos no Brasil, impulsionando tanto a indústria fonográfica, que atravessava um período de expansão e afirmação, como o mercado editorial de publicações periódicas, também em crescimento. É, neste contexto, que Rolling Stone chegou às bancas, destinada ao público jovem e com perfil de revista especializada, que tratava em seu conteúdo de informações e notícias da movimentação em torno do rock, MPB e contracultura. De fato, os gêneros predominantes em suas páginas são o rock internacional, o rock produzido no Brasil e a MPB de influência tropicalista. Em sua breve existência, 36 edições foram comercializadas em bancas de jornal, e como veículo, a revista possuiu um alcance de circulação nacional, prestando-se a fornecer informações sobre o panorama geral da cena musical, através de artigos, entrevistas e resenhas de discos. Os textos publicados na revista apontam para aproximações entre o rock e a MPB. The aim of the present study was to assess the issues of Rolling Stone edited in Brazil between December 1971 and January 1973. More specifically, the goal was to evaluate how the magazine integrates the Rio de Janeiro's rock scene in the early 1970s, promoting and doing record of artistic activities, thus contributing to the dissemination of rock made in Brazil. The analyzed period is characterized by a striking cross-country youthful movement influenced by counterculture, whose ideology was conveyed via music, books, and publications. This historical period also witnessed the development of the market of symbolic goods in Brazil, boosting the recording industry, which was going through a cycle of expansion and selfassurance, and of the market of periodical publications, which was also on the rise. It was in that context that Rolling Stone, aimed at a young readership and incorporating the distinctive features of a specialized magazine, hit the newsstands, covering information and news on rock, MPB (Brazilian popular music), and counterculture. Actually, the predominant genres were international rock, rock made in Brazil, and MPB influenced by tropicalism. During its short-lived existence, 36 issues were sold at newsstands, having a nationwide circulation and providing an overview of the musical scene by means of articles, interviews, and album reviews. The texts published in the magazine demonstrated a close relationship between rock and MPB. There was an all-out effort channeled into giving visibility to the activity of new rock bands and artists who attached a high value to counterculture and to its interaction with rock. It is also possible to claim that the magazine was an integral part of the musical scene it helped establish, evoking moments, placing a high value on experiences and on musical events, and making room for rock bands and rock itself. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo estudiar la revista Rolling Stone, editada en Brasil entre diciembre de 1971 y enero de 1973. Específicamente se buscó analizar, a lo largo del trabajo, el modo como la revista formó parte de la escena rock de Río de Janeiro de principios de los setenta, al promover y registrar la actividad de los artistas, contribuyendo a la difusión del rock producido aquí. Ese período registró un importante movimiento juvenil transnacional con influencia de la contracultura, cuyo ideario difundido transitaba a través de la música, libros y publicaciones. Asimismo identificamos en ese momento histórico el desarrollo del mercado de bienes simbólicos en Brasil, que impulsó tanto la industria fonográfica, la que pasaba por un período de expansión y afirmación, como el mercado editorial de publicaciones periódicas, también en crecimiento. Fue en este contexto que la revista Rolling Stone llegó a los quioscos de periódicos, dirigida a un público joven y con perfil de revista especializada, que trataba en su contenido de informaciones y noticias del movimiento alrededor del rock, MPB (Música Popular Brasileña) y contracultura. De hecho, los géneros predominantes en sus páginas eran el rock internacional, el rock producido en Brasil y la MPB de influencia tropicalista. One of the greatest breakthroughs in soil mechanics was the development of Critical State Soil Mechanics (CSSM) in the 1950s and 1960s and the derivation of a continuum elasto-plastic constitutive model, namely Cam clay, which was the foundation for other continuum models for clays, and much later for sands. However, as yet there has been no micro mechanical analysis which explains the existence of such continuum models; such a micro perspective must take into account the discontinuous nature of soil. Without such insight, the engineer cannot understand which micro parameters affect soil behaviour. This work uses the discrete element method (DEM) to model a silica sand as a sample of discrete particles, with properties which have been calibrated against experimental data in previous work, to build up a micro mechanical picture of the behaviour of sand under different loading conditions. The simplest of loading conditions is the one dimensional or oedometer test and has been modelled to check whether this agrees with previously published research. The simulated sample has then been subjected to isotropic compression to establish a normal compression line in log voids ratio – log stress space, and which turns out to be parallel to the one-dimensional normal compression line, in agreement with CSSM. The evolution of the isotropic normal compression line is due to local shear stresses within the sample, and the origin of the existence of both lines lies in the evolution of a fractal distribution of particles with a fractal dimension of 2.5. The effect of boundary particles has then been minimised by choosing an appropriate aspect ratio and a smaller number of particles in the sample to give a computational time which is acceptable for subsequent shearing to critical states. Isotropically normally compressed samples have been unloaded to different stress levels and sheared to critical states. A unique critical state line (CSL) exists at high stress levels, which is parallel to the normal compression lines, in agreement with CSSM. At low stress levels, the CSL is not linear and is non-unique; that is to say it is a function of preconsolidation pressure because the fractal distribution of sizes has not fully evolved. Samples sheared on the dense side of critical dilate and have a peak strength whilst loose samples exhibit ductile contraction, in agreement with CSSM. At a critical state, the work shows that crushing continues in the formation of ‘fines’, small particles with smaller than 0.1mm dimensions, which plays no part in the mechanical behaviour, which is reflected in the average mechanical co-ordination number and which means that plastic hardening can be assumed to have ceased at a critical state. For the isotropically overconsolidated samples sheared to critical states, a number of different definitions of yield have been used to establish a yield surface in stress space. The work shows that a previously published yield surface for sand (Yu, 1998; McDowell, 2002) gives a good representation of the behaviour, and it has therefore been shown that the sample of discrete particles has been shown to give rise to observed continuum behaviour. The work is, to the author’s knowledge, the first that has shown a DEM soil to show many of the desirable features of sand, in that the sample qualitatively gives normal compression lines and a CSL of the correct slope, which obeys CSSM and which gives a Cam Clay type yield surface in stress space. The work means that the established model can be used in the study of other micro mechanics problems such as particle shape and time effects and the application of DEM to boundary value problems directly.

Building a sustainable structure in soil or rock that satisfies all predefined technical requirements implies choosing a rational and effective construction method. An important aspect is how the performance of the structure is verified. For cases when the geotechnical behaviour is hard to predict, the existing design code for geotechnical structures, Eurocode 7, suggests the so-called “observational method” to verify that the performance is acceptable. The basic principle of the method is to accept predefined changes in the design during construction, in order to accommodate the actual ground conditions, if the current design is found unsuitable. Even though this in theory should ensure an effective design solution, formal application of the observational method is rare. It is therefore not clear which prerequisites and circumstances that must be present for the observational method to be applicable and be the more suitable method. This licentiate thesis gives a critical review of the observational method, based on, and therefore limited by, the outcome of the performed case studies. The aim is to identify and highlight the crucial aspects that make the observational method difficult to apply, thereby providing a basis for research towards a more applicable definition of the method. The main topics of discussion are (1) the apparent contradiction between the preference for advanced probabilistic calculation methods to solve complex design problems and sound, qualitative engineering judgement, (2) the limitations of measurement data in assessing the safety of a structure, (3) the fact that currently, no safety margin is required for the completed structure when the observational method is applied, and (4) the rigidity of the current definition of the observational method and the implications of deviations from its principles. Based on the review, it is argued that the observational method can be improved by linking it to a probabilistic framework. To be applicable, the method should be supported by guidelines that explain and exemplify how to make the best use of it. The engineering judgement is however not lost; no matter how elaborate probabilistic methods are used, sound judgement is still needed to define the problem correctly. How to define such a probabilistic framework is an urgent topic for future research, because this also addresses the concerns regarding safety that is raised in the other topics of discussion.

Denna metod tillåter i förväg förberedda förändringar i designen under konstruktionstiden, om observationer av konstruktionens beteende indikerar att så behövs. På så vis anpassas konstruktionen till de faktiska förhållandena i marken. Trots att detta tillvägagångssätt i teorin borde ge en rationell design, används metoden sällan. Det råder därför oklarheter om vilka förutsättningar och omständigheter som krävs för att observationsmetoden ska kunna användas och dessutom utgöra den bästa lösningen. I denna licentiatuppsats granskas observationsmetoden och dess användbarhet. Målet med licentiatuppsatsen är att belysa de aspekter som kan utgöra svårigheter när observationsmetoden används. Dessa identifierades under arbetet med några fallstudier. Licentiatuppsatsen ger därmed en utgångspunkt för fortsatt forskning för att ta fram en mer användbar definition av observationsmetoden. De viktigaste aspekterna som diskuteras i uppsatsen är (1) den skenbara motsatsen mellan användandet av sannolikhetsbaserade beräkningsmetoder för att lösa komplexa dimensioneringsfrågor och kvalitativa ingenjörsmässiga bedömningar, (2) de begränsningar som finns när man använder mätdata för att utvärdera konstruktioners säkerhet, (3) att det för tillfället saknas krav på säkerhetsmarginal mot brott för konstruktioner som byggts med observationsmetoden, och (4) vad svårigheten att uppfylla Eurokodens strikta definition innebär för metodens användbarhet. Born in the political turmoil of the 1989 student movement, Chinese rock music is often understood as an ideological weapon to against the Communist principles due to its western origin. The movement pushed Chinese rock to an unprecedented height of cultural prominence in the. early 1990s. Chinese rock, however, lost this cultural prominence in the mid-1990s. The political suppression is generally regarded as the key reason causing the crisis, but the real reason is much more complicated and deep inside China's society. . The 1990s is a decade when China was profoundly transformed into a new nation in every dimension. The substantial economic growth hid other social problems, such as the unparalleled development between economy and culture. The crisis of Chinese rock is just evidence demonstrating how cultures are co-produced by multi-forces social movements rather than any single factors. Social powers and the political power are often mixed in previous studies. It is also incorrect to treat ordinary people as a passive group who actually had exerted their influences on the formation of Chinese rock in the 1990s. Qualitative data (such as the lyrics and comments) and quantitative data (such as the number ofrock album and economic figures) display why the crisis happened. The political-concentrated content and the purely artistic form are the two direct causes of the crisis, but digging deeper, social power, social classes, and cultural capital play vital roles. The immaturity of Chinese rock music itself is the direct reason, but the immaturity of China's society is the essential and primary reason for the crisis. The crisis of Chinese rock, however, does not mean its death, but a period when rockers, the music industries, the media, fans, and even the government needed to learn and accumulate adequate source and capital to develop this new culture. It cannot be an overnight task. The comeback of Chinese rock in the new millennium demonstrates that Chinese rock is a culture related to China. Its social significance and role likely differ from its western counterpart. Because China has been opened up to the outside world since 1979, the development of intercultural exchange is inevitable, which makes rock music develop in China in a together-in-difference situation.

Rho-associated coiled-coil kinases (ROCKs) are involved in essential cellular functions such as adhesion, contraction, motility, proliferation, and cell survival/apoptosis. Four ROCK inhibitors have already been approved by the FDA and are used to treat glaucoma (ripasudil and netarsudil), cerebral vasospasm (fasudil), and graft-versus-host disease (belumosudil). Recent studies have focused on exploring the role of ROCK kinase inhibitors in cancer treatment and the development of new ROCK inhibitors. The main objective of this study was to identify critical structural features relevant to the inhibition of ROCK1 using a ligand-based 3D-QSAR (3D quantitative structure-activity relationship) method. The 3D-QSAR model for ROCK1 was created and validated using internal and external validation parameters (R2, Q2, R2pred, rm 2, r/2m, rm̅̅2̅ and ∆r2m). The main structural features that correlate with the inhibition of ROCK1 were identified (e.g., heterocycle with hydrogen donor group like nitrogen atom) and further structural modifications of the ROCK1 inhibitors that contribute to increased activity were proposed (removal of the amino group of the oxadiazole, modification of the substituents of the phenyl ring).

Abstract Drilling optimization is a complicated multi-objective processing optimization problem. During drilling, drillers need to adjust WOB and RPM continuously in a timely manner, not only to maximize ROP, but also to prevent severe vibration and maintain downhole tool durability. In this study, a virtual drilling agent using a deep reinforcement learning (RL) model is developed and trained to automatically make drilling decisions and proven to effectively optimize drilling parameters. A deep RL model using a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is developed to optimize drilling process. In RL model, the reward of drilling decisions at each drilling step is a function of drilling ROP, downhole vibration tendency, bit dull state, and risks of tool failure. Separate modules to evaluate the reward of each component are implemented and trained using field and laboratory data. Deep RL model is applied and tested comprehensively on different drilling environments including hard and abrasive rock, embedded rock, vibrational vs. stable drilling. The hyper-parameters of the actor-critic NN architecture in RL model are carefully selected to improve the model convergence. Results show the deep RL model can effectively find the optimum drilling solutions in various drilling environments. In soft formation, RL model applies the upper limit of WOB and RPM throughout the drilling depth to maximum ROP and reduce drilling time. In hard and abrasive formation, RL model gradually changes RPM and WOB to prevent the pre-mature wear of PDC cutters. The change of the drilling parameters is optimized based on rock abrasivity and target drilling depth. In unstable drilling environment, while RL model limits the ratio of WOB and RPM to avoid stick-slip vibration, simultaneously, the WOB and RPM is controlled to maximum ROP to drill to TD. In embedded formation, RL model successfully found the optimum solution by adjusting WOB/RPM to avoid stick-slip and overloading of bit cutting structure. The learning process of RL model shows hyper-parameter selection plays a critical role in model convergence and accuracy. Improperly selected hyper-parameter in RL model can lead to the failure of solution searching or sub-optimum solution. Overall, the RL model is approved to effectively find optimum drilling solutions in the various drilling environments and can be applied for both pre-well drilling planning and real-time drilling optimization. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt to develop deep RL model for drilling optimization by implementing a combination of ROP, vibration, bit dull, and durability in the reward function. The proposed RL model can be extended to include more reward factors in the drilling optimization such as whirl and high frequency torsional oscillation (HFTO), stuck pipe, tool temperature and so on. The RL model can be applied for both pre-well drilling planning and real-time drilling optimization.

ABSTRACT During seismic events, infrastructure in mountainous terrain is often vulnerable to rockfall impacts. This paper presents a probabilistic approach to evaluating the potential of rockfall impacts on an existing hydropower infrastructure under the design ground motions condition. The evaluation was conducted in three steps: (1) identification of potentially unstable rock blocks whose trajectory might reach the infrastructure, (2) seismic stability analysis to evaluate the potential of these rock blocks falling, and (3) rockfall trajectory analysis to evaluate the potential of falling rock blocks reaching the infrastructure. Once relevant rock blocks were identified, pseudo-static rock stability analysis under the design seismic condition using Block Theory was performed. 1,000 random three-dimensional seismic load directions were generated for each rock block. Joint and rock block surface orientations necessary for the stability analysis were identified with LiDAR information. Using the software "RAMMS::ROCKFALL", rockfall trajectory analysis with 1,000 random initial velocity magnitudes and directions was performed. The peak velocities were estimated from peak ground accelerations selected during the Design Earthquake. Overlaying the results from the stability and trajectory analyses, we identified rock blocks with a potential of failure in case of the design earthquake and, in case of detachment, of impacting the infrastructure due to the applied initial velocities. INTRODUCTION In mountainous regions, structures for hydropower, transportation, or tourism are vulnerable to damage by rockfall. Marginally stable rock blocks above the infrastructure can be destabilized by ground motion during earthquakes. The serviceability of these structures can be critical for public safety; therefore, it is important to assess the rock fall hazard for planning potential mitigation engineering measures. Earthquakes are highly uncertain events, with unknowns in the magnitude and direction of ground motion. The rockfall process itself is also uncertain since many properties, such as the initial velocity of the rock block and its orientation, can influence the final trajectory. This anonymous case study illustrates the considerations of rockfall triggered by seismic events and the resulting risk on infrastructure. Our probabilistic rock fall hazard evaluation involves the following three steps: (i) Identification: Based on available site information and observations, we selected potentially detachable rock blocks greater than 3 meters (m) in size in any direction on the slopes above the infrastructure of concern. We assumed that rock blocks smaller than 3 m are not large enough to cause catastrophic damage to the structure. Owing to energy crisis and global warming, people have to seek for new energy sources to substitute fossil fuels. Human being would maintain persistent development by means of new replaceable energy sources. As a kind of replaceable energy source, geothermal power is attracting people more and more attention. The technology of geothermal power generation has been gradually recognized and applied around the world. Heat exchange is the basic principle of geothermal power generation. A lot of heats stored in dry hot rocks under the ground can be carried out by high-pressure medium. The heat energy drives the steam turbine generator to work. Therefore, the heat exchange between rock and high-pressure fluid through the dry hot rock crannies is a key problem which needs to be solved. Based on the geological structure of rocks, the hypothetical cranny among dry hot rocks is put forward in this paper. The model of a single cranny is established too. The heat exchange between rock and high-pressure fluid through the dry hot rock crannies is analyzed based on the theory of heat transfer and hydrodynamics. The relationship among high-pressure fluid temperature, fluid velocity, dry hot rock crannies length and dry hot rock temperature field is obtained using the single cranny model. It may be useful for the development and application of geothermal resources.

ABSTRACT The physical properties and mechanical behaviour of planetary rocks are critical parameters in the design of asteroid mining. Rock samples obtained by sample-return missions via spacecraft and meteorites collected in the earth are usually rare, fragmented and arbitrarily shaped. These samples are difficult to be processed into standard cylinders required by traditionally macroscale rock mechanics testing methods (e.g., MTS tests), leading to the use of microscale rock mechanics experiments to derive the macroscale Young's modulus of these samples. These microscale experiments have to then be upscaled to obtain macroscale values. The performances of three upscaling methods are considered, two are based on effective medium theory and the third is the computational method of accurate grain-based modeling (AGBM). These methods are compared in the context of granitic samples, and the errors these three methodologies are quantified. The AGBM is found to be the most accurate, and is subsequently extended to measure the mechanical properties of unconventional rock samples, Hammadah al Hamra 346 (HaH 346) asteroid meteorites. The microstructure, mineral composition and mechanical properties of rock-forming minerals and interphase in HaH 346 meteorites are measured using microscale rock mechanics experiment (micro-RME). Then, the macroscale Young's modulus of HaH 346 meteorites is upscaled and estimated using the validated AGBM method. The work is helpful for the characterization of the unconventional rock samples during asteroid mining. INTRODUCTION Asteroid mining involves the hypothetical exploration of materials from asteroids and other minor planets, including near-Earth objects. Metal-rich near-Earth asteroids provide the intriguing possibility that ferrum (Fe), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) could someday be mined for use on Earth or in space (Hiroi et al., 1993). Therefore, understanding the deformation and failure properties of planetary rocks is critical to optimize construction activities beyond Earth (Gibney, 2018). The properties of asteroid rocks, such as composition, thermal parameters and magnetic properties, have been measured and are available in the literature (Flynn et al., 2018; Gattacceca et al., 2014; Krot et al., 2009; Ostrowski and Bryson, 2019). However, the strength measurements of asteroid rocks are scarce, mainly due to the destructive nature of traditional macroscale rock mechanics experiments (macro-RME). The physical properties of stony meteorites, including mechanical properties such as strength, provide important clues to understand the formation and physical evolution of material in the solar protoplanetary disk (Flynn et al., 2018; Pohl and Britt, 2020). However, asteroid samples (e.g. meteorites) are usually arbitrarily-shaped making it difficult to produce standard specimens (Shao et al., 2020) that are required by macro-RME. Recently, the microscale Rock Mechanics Experiment (micro-RME) and Accurate Grain-Based Models (AGBM) have been developed to investigate the mechanical properties of rock-forming minerals of arbitrarily-shaped rocks and their macroscale mechanical properties (Xu et al., 2020; Tang et al. 2022).

Re-examination of the rare earth elements (REE) deposits in the Cornudas Mountains is warranted in light of today's economic importance of critical minerals, including REE that are essential in most of our electronic devices. New mapping, petrography, 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, and geochemical analyses have provided a better understanding of the emplacement of these intrusions and associated mineral deposits. The Cornudas Mountains form the northern Trans-Pecos alkaline magmatic province in the southern part of the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt. The igneous rocks in the Cornudas Mountains were emplaced in two pulses at 37.14-34.5 and 32.48-26.95 Ma, just prior to or during the early phases of Rio Grande rift extension, and consist of 1) larger nepheline syenite-syenite laccoliths and plugs, 2) phonolite plugs, sills, and dikes, 3) smaller syenite plugs and dikes that intrude Permian and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, and 4) volcanic breccia dikes. New USGS geophysical data indicate that some of these intrusions extend deep into the subsurface, with additional buried intrusions potentially at depth. The focus of REE exploration is along the lower unit (PEnsp2) of the Wind Mountain nepheline syenite laccolith, as well as within syenite-phonolite and volcanic breccia dikes, plugs and skarns and carbonate-replacement deposits in Chess Draw. Some samples contain as much as 3110 ppm total REE. REE could be leached from a mineral concentrate of the REE-bearing minerals (eudialyte, zircon, monazite, bastnasite, calcio-catapleiite, vitusite, roumaite, xenotime). We incorporate whole rock and clinopyroxene chemistry of each intrusion into the clinopyroxene-liquid geothermobarometer (Masotta, 2013) to determine the temperatures and pressures of emplacement. This thermometer provides higher crystallization temperature estimates for the syenite intrusions (857-1027 deg. C) than the phonolite sills (760-869 deg. C). We then use the barometric estimates (0.3-3.3 kbar) to calculate emplacement depths (1.2-12.3 km). Pairing these depths with the new geochronology, minimum exhumation rates for intrusions in the Cornudas Mountains are estimated that range from 0.04-0.34 mm/yr crystallization temperatures and exhumation rates provide additional information to aid in developing a model for the formation of REE deposits.

A growing number of countries are committed toreduce their carbon emissions and are transitioning towards renewable and clean energy sources, leading to an in crease in demand formetals and minerals. This is especially the case for a short list of what are called "critical minerals" which are considered essential to economic development, including the transition to a low-carbon economy and national security. There liability of their supply chain raises concerns considering geological scarcity, difficulty to extract and/or political factors influencing their availability. At the same time, public awareness and perception of geoscience are eroding and there is more and more reluctance towards mining projects, even from traditionally favourable communities. To face this challenge, promote public interest and outline the contribution of geological science to society, geoscientists of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC-Québec) have designed and put together a portable display that includes a suite of mineral and metal samples considered critical for the sustainable success of Canada's transition towards a clean and digital economy. The display is a user-friendly toolkit that can be used by any GSC geoscientists during outreach activities, in classrooms as well as during public open houses. It comes with straightforward pedagogic material and content, along with presentation scenarios. To broaden and adapt the workshops to specific expectations, additional toolkits were developed and all are contained within easy to carry travel cases. These cover a variety of topics and can be presented as stand-alone displays or be used complementary to one another. For example, the "Mines and minerals" collection may serve as a supplement to the "Critical minerals" display to present every day objects in which minerals are used as well as ores amples from active mines to illustrate the intertwining between mining activities and our everyday lives. Another display covers the ever-popular fossils thematic with the "Sedimentary rocks and fossils" collection and gives an opportunity to address key geoscience themes such as life evolution and biological crisis along with groundwater reservoirs and resources. The "Magmatic rocks" display touches on the formation of rocks from magmas, the different types and active processes of volcanoes, and discusses the risks and benefits related to volcanic activity. Hopefully, these four ready-to-use portable displays will encourage more GSC geoscientists to engage in public oriented activities to make geosciences more accessible, change perceptions and offer an overall tangible scientific experience for people.

Interdepartmental Memorandum of Understanding (IMOU) 5170 between Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and Transport Canada Innovation Centre (TC-IC) aims to gain new insight into slow-moving landslides, and the influence of climate change, through testing conventional and emerging monitoring technologies. IMOU 5107 focuses on strategically important sections of the national railway network in the Thompson River valley, British Columbia (BC), and the Assiniboine River valley along the borders of Manitoba (MN) and Saskatchewan (SK). Results of this research are applicable elsewhere in Canada (e.g., the urban-rural-industrial landscapes of the Okanagan Valley, BC), and around the world where slow-moving landslides and climate change are adversely affecting critical socio-economic infrastructure. Open File 8931 outlines landslide mapping and changedetection monitoring protocols based on the successes of IMOU 5170 and ICL-IPL Project 202 in BC. In this region, ice sheets, glaciers, permafrost, rivers and oceans, high relief, and biogeoclimatic characteristics contribute to produce distinctive rapid and slow-moving landslide assemblages that have the potential to impact railway infrastructure and operations. Bedrock and drift-covered slopes along the transportation corridors are prone to mass wasting when favourable conditions exist. In high-relief mountainous areas, rapidly moving landslides include rock and debris avalanches, rock and debris falls, debris flows and torrents, and lahars. In areas with moderate to low relief, rapid to slow mass movements include rockslides and slumps, debris or earth slides and slumps, and earth flows. Slow-moving landslides include rock glaciers, rock and soil creep, solifluction, and lateral spreads in bedrock and surficial deposits. Research efforts lead to a better understanding of how geological conditions, extreme weather events and climate change influence landslide activity along the national railway corridor. Combining field-based landslide investigation with multi-year geospatial and in-situ time-series monitoring leads to a more resilient railway national transportation network able to meet Canada's future socioeconomic needs, while ensuring protection of the environment and resource-based communities from landslides related to extreme weather events and climate change. InSAR only measures displacement in the east-west orientation, whereas UAV and RTK-GNSS change-detection surveys capture full displacement vectors. RTK-GNSS do not provide spatial coverage, whereas InSAR and UAV surveys do. In addition, InSAR and UAV photogrammetry cannot map underwater, whereas boat-mounted bathymetric surveys reveal information on channel morphology and riverbed composition. Remote sensing datasets, consolidated in a geographic information system, capture the spatial relationships between landslide distribution and specific terrain features, at-risk infrastructure, and the environmental conditions expected to correlate with landslide incidence and magnitude. Reliable real-time monitoring solutions for critical railway infrastructure (e.g., ballast, tracks, retaining walls, tunnels, and bridges) able to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of Canada are highlighted. The provision of fundamental geoscience and baseline geospatial monitoring allows stakeholders to develop robust risk tolerance, remediation, and mitigation strategies to maintain the resilience and accessibility of critical transportation infrastructure, while also protecting the natural environment, community stakeholders, and Canadian economy. We propose a best-practice solution involving three levels of investigation to describe the form and function of the wide range of rapid and slow-moving landslides occurring across Canada that is also applicable elsewhere. Research activities for 2022 to 2025 are presented by way of conclusion.

Cabrillo National Monument (CABR) is a unit of the National Park System located on the Point Loma peninsula in San Diego, CA, USA. Despite its small size (0.65 terrestrial km2), the monument attracts 851,000 annual visitors (IRMA SRSS Reports 2011-2020), and acts as an “urban island”, providing habitat for unique algal, plant and animal species in an area of increasing development and urbanization. The coastal area of the park also leads to the rocky intertidal zone, which is regarded by many as the best conserved shorelines in mainland southern California. Due to the high-quality habitat and proximity to an urban area, it is critical to monitor community composition and visitor use of the rocky intertidal area. We leveraged over 30 years of long-term monitoring data of both rocky intertidal communities and visitation to investigate: (1) whether visitation has increased over time, (2) if community composition has changed over time across intertidal management zones. We found that visitation to management Zone I has increased over time. Additionally, we found that visitation doesn’t scale linearly across management zones: 73% of people were observed in Zone I, 19% of people in Zone II, and 4% of people in Zone III. PERMANOVA analyses indicated that community composition differed over time and across management zones for all plot types. Documenting community shifts, rather than changes in populations of single species, allows NPS staff to capture, and respond to, ecological transformation. Using the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework, we recommend that CABR either accept or direct changes to the rocky intertidal (e.g., directing changes in higher visitation areas by implementing a timed entry or shuttle system, and accepting changes in closed or very low visitation areas). Looking forward, long-term rocky intertidal monitoring will inform the effectiveness of resisting, accepting, or directing actions the park takes to uphold the NPS mission at CABR and other NPS units with rocky intertidal habitat, which span the Pacific coast.
