Abstract Robert Frost and Jesse Stuart are both known as regional artists.In fact, Frost’s use of his New England region was pointed out to Stuart as a model by a literary mentor at Vanderbilt shortly after the publication of the Southern Agrarian manifesto I’ll Take My Stand. Indeed, there are many similarities between the two men: both were farmers and nature writers, teachers and educators, and above all, regional writers who captured the flora and fauna and character of their respective regions.Despite their different regions, both men take an honest and authentic look at the unsettling and sometimes cruel ironies of nature and the human condition: the appearance of rustic simplicity that the Yankee and the Appalachian artist tease us into taking at face value nevertheless provokes the Truth of deep probing into the meaning of life. As successful regional artists, Appalachian Stuart and New England Frost claim their place not only in geography, but more importantly, in American literary tradition as each one uses his intimate knowledge of place and character to spin a wonderfully entertaining read, whether it be in prose or verse. Most similar when they are linked by the jarring effect of final lines (Frost) and the ironic disjunction between content and title (Stuart), both writers ultimately, often surprisingly, strike the reader with the hard edge of universal truth about what it means to be human.

This essay argues that Stuart fairy poetry, rooted in Shakespeare's innovative representation of tiny, consumeristic fairies, attempts to indigenize new forms of elite material display. Rather than the fairies of popular tradition or courtly mythography, Stuart poets depict miniaturized Mabs and Oberons who are notable for their wardrobes, banquets, coaches, and the decor of their palaces. The fairy poetry of William Browne, Michael Drayton, and Robert Herrick must be interpreted not as playful escapism, but as a self-consciously politicized literary mode which reveals these writers’ deep ambivalence toward elite culture — and toward their own artistic role within that culture.

This dissertation considers the use of orchestra bells as a solo instrument. I use three examples taken from chamber literature (Drumming by Steve Reich, Why Patterns? by Morton Feldman, and Ave by Franco Donatoni) to demonstrate uses of the instrument in an ensemble setting. I use six solo, unaccompanied orchestra bell pieces (Twelve Bell Canons by Robert Morris, Katarynka by Marta Ptaszyńska, Over by Stuart Saunders Smith, A Little Suite and an Encore Tango by Will Ogdon, Breaks Through by Lafayette Gilchrist, and Bells for New Orleans by Roscoe Mitchell) to illustrate the instrument’s expressive, communicative ability. In the discussion of each piece, I include brief background information, the composer’s musical language in the piece and performance considerations. I interviewed composers of these solo works to complete the research for this document to discuss their musical language and their thoughts on writing for solo orchestra bells.

Анотація:
The purpose of this study is to examine why the media has a more negative attitude towards lobbyism in 2014 compared to earlier years since the 1970s in Sweden. This study examines first if a change of attitude has occurred between the given years and whether the attitude is more positive, negative or neutral towards lobbyism in recent years compared to earlier years and lastly if the media are comparing different contexts in which lobbying takes place. The method of this study is based on quantitative content analysis, and on Kanol’s ideas that by implementing theories from different disciplines one can develop theories on comparative lobbying in order to increase and improve our knowledge on the phenomenon of lobbyism as the contemporary research on the subject are scars and underdeveloped. The material in this study are news articles that have been collected between 1970 to 2000 and every second year from 2000 up until 2014. This study also provides a comprehensive picture of the Swedish context in which lobbying takes place by gathering information from multiple sources and earlier studies as this information has as of yet not been gathered in a single study up until now. The conclusion is that there has been a change of attitude towards lobbyism in Sweden, however, the dominant attitude is not a negative but rather a more skeptical/cynical one which has increased since 1992. The term lobbying is controversial because it’s being mentioned in various topics that could be considered negative by the reader as the decision making whether the news article is negative or positive is subjective. Because the media has increased its negative news reporting overall and that the unconscious mind of the reader is also attracted to negative news reporting, the term lobbying can be considered “negative” overall as it is constantly being mentioned in negative contexts even when the article is not about lobbying. A reasonable explanation why the media has a more negative / skeptical attitude to lobbyism is because of previous scandals related to lobbying either in Sweden or outside the country's border, but also because the media can’t hold the elected officials responsible for their actions as transparency and accountability is absent. Because of the increased reporting in Sweden on lobbying from all over the world, the subject will most likely become more relevant on the Swedish political agenda.

Ce travail tente de déterminer les différentes caractéristiques musicales et littéraires propres à l'écriture dramatique de Gaetano Donizetti, compositeur italien (1797-1848), dans la décennie 1830. Ces caractéristiques sont observées telles qu'elles se dégagent de l'étude de trois opéras dramatiques choisis dans cette période - la plus féconde de la carrière italienne du compositeur : Anna Bolena (1830), Maria Stuarda (1834-1835) et Roberto Devereux (1837). Sont notamment visés par cette étude les livrets - leurs sources historiques et littéraires, remontant à la Renaissance anglaise et à ses dynasties régnantes tantôt par le biais du roman "gothique" anglais, tantôt par celui du théâtre romantique européen, leur niveau de langue audacieux, ou bien encore leurs réseaux psychologiques et formels de personnages et de narrations -, les structures musicales - reproduites plus ou moins fidélement ou éclatées pour le besoin de l'action dramatique, utilisant le rythme scènique, l'orchestration et le rapport de la voix à l'orchestre comme autant d'éléments dramaturgiques - et enfin, plus particulièrement, l'écriture vocale et les nouveaux usages propres au compositeur dans l'utilisation des registres, des tessitures et de l'écriture mélodique. Il s'agit ainsi de distinguer d'une part les éléments de langage servant chez Gaetano Donizetti les dimensions réalistes et/ou fantastiques du lyrisme dramatique et italien de l'époque, d'autre part ceux hérités du bel canto rossinien et ceux ouvrant la voie à une vocalité et une dramaturgie pré-verdiennes, distinctions permettant alors de tenter une définition du "drame donizettien".

O estilo de época Sturm und Drang, o primeiro movimento literário genuinamente alemão, surgido na segunda metade do século XVIII, possibilitou a emancipação literária da Alemanha e introduziu naquele país o conceito de gênio original. A partir da descoberta da obra do gênio inglês Shakespeare (possibilitada pelas traduções de Christoph Martin Wieland), os alemães se depararam com o modelo de revolução literária que necessitavam para instituir as bases da originalidade literária alemã. Pautando-se na estrutura dramática shakespeariana, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe e Friedrich Schiller elaboraram seus dramas de estreia, obras foco da presente pesquisa: Götz von Berlichingen e Os bandoleiros, respectivamente. O presente estudo propõe-se, por conseguinte, a analisar as obras supracitadas à luz da temática do gênio original. Mas, primeiramente, são observados os fatores (como a ascenção do romance inglês) e escritores (como Gothold Ephraim Lessing, Johann Jakob Bodmer, Johann Jakob Breitinger, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, Wieland e Johann Gottfried von Herder) que colaboraram para a instituição da era genial na Alemanha
The Sturm und Drang period, the first literary style genuinely German, emerged in the second half of the 18th century, turned the literary emancipation of Germany possible and introduced in that country the concept of original genius. As from the discovery of the English genius Shakespeares works (enabled by Christoph Martin Wielands translations), the Germans came across the model of literary revolution they needed to establish the basis of Germans literary originality. Basing themselves on Shakespearean dramatic structure, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller worked out their first plays (works that are the focus of the present research): Götz von Berlichingen and The robbers respectively. The present thesis intends therefore to analyse the above-mentioned works, considering the concept of original genius. But foremost the factors (as much as the rise of the English novel) and writers (as Gothold Ephraim Lessing, Johann Jakob Bodmer, Johann Jakob Breitinger, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, Wieland and Johann Gottfried von Herder) that cooperated for the establishment of the ingenious era in Germany are examined

Abstract On the sea floor of specific deep ocean environments lie prolific amounts of polymetallic nodules that contain minerals critical to meeting the future energy demands of a growing worldwide population. Polymetallic nodules rich in manganese, nickel, and cobalt spread over millions of square kilometers of abyssal seabed and contain the minerals needed for future energy storage demands. The offshore oil and gas industry seeks to participate in the energy expansion by leveraging its deepwater experience to harvest these nodules. The knowledge and wisdom gained from decades of operating offshore provides significant insight into the development and implementation of the technology needed to address the challenges of deep sea nodule harvesting. The authors describe a design selection tool based on the methods described by Stuart Pugh to select a polymetallic nodule Vertical Transport System. Stuart Pugh, known for his work in product design and development, introduced the Pugh Method in the 1980s. The Pugh Method is a structured and integrated process applied to design development including concept generation, evaluation, and selection. The Vertical Transport System design processes uses the Pugh Method to recommend a candidate design. The evaluation step uses a two groups of company experts who present the concepts (the team), and collectively evaluate (the group) and recommend the best design concept for further development. We apply the method to the case of deep sea mineral recovery operations specifically the design of the Vertical Transportation System. First, the authors introduce the Pugh Method tool, how it works, and how it applies to this specific case. We describe how risks and rewards relate to each selection characteristic used to evaluate the Vertical Transport System concepts. Further, we talk about team selection and the points to consider when assembling the right team to achieve credible results. Next, we describe each concept identifying and recognizing the various technical, operational, and economic selection characteristics, such as size, power consumption, reliability, availability, etc. Finally, we evaluate each concept against the different selection characteristics and discuss the results. The paper concludes with a robust process flow chart describing the selection method for a Vertical Transport System.

Designing and planning periodic orbits in an uncertain environment can be very challenging. Traditionally, trajectories are engineered in a two-step approach. First, nominal orbits are designed, describing the system as a deterministic dynamical model. Then, brute-force Monte Carlo simulations are used to test the initial conditions against model uncertainties and knowledge errors (e.g. imprecise estimation of the spacecraft state). While this approach constitutes the de facto standard in current space trajectory design practices, it leads to very time consuming and potentially suboptimal solutions, due to the fact that the robustness of candidate orbits is only assessed a-posteriori. In this work, we propose a paradigm shift accounting uncertainties from the very early design phases. In particular, our aim is to study the low-order moments of the satellites’ probability density functions of the state extending numerical continuation techniques to stochastic scenarios. Numerical continuation for deterministic systems is a widely known and used method to find and continue equilibria, periodic orbits or tori in dynamical systems [1]. More recently, stochastic continuation techniques have been proposed as an alternative to these traditional methods to allow the continuation of the low-order moments of probability density functions in uncertain environments, by calculating the fixed points of the first moments (e.g. mean and covariance) of the uncertain parameters [2]. While these techniques have shown to be successful for some dynamical systems [3,6], they have never been applied to the complex and rich dynamical environments of the circular restricted three-body problem. Moreover, they still rely on traditional Monte Carlo approaches to integrate ensembles of initial conditions and estimate the moments to be continued: this can become quite challenging in terms of computational costs for highly nonlinear dynamics, long time horizons, or higher moments. With this work, our goal is to show the potential beneficial application of stochastic continuation to space mission design and how it can be leveraged to incorporate uncertainties from the early design stages. We modify the standard differential correction procedure used to find fixed points of deterministic Poincare’ mappings by using the Newton-GMRES method: this allows to estimate the Jacobian-vector product for systems in which the analytical expression of the Jacobian is not available [6], as it is the case for the first moments of the uncertain parameters. To alleviate the computational complexity of stochastic continuation techniques, we also show two different approaches to propagate the initial state uncertainties at future times, discussing their merits and drawbacks. First, we use a fast Taylor propagator to numerically integrate the samples of the distribution and reconstruct the propagated uncertainties at future times [7]. Furthermore, we also use differential algebra techniques to build and quickly evaluate high-order Taylor polynomial expansions of Poincare’ mappings as a function of the random variables [8], thereby bypassing the use of Monte Carlo-based approaches to evolve the uncertainty at future times. We will discuss some preliminary experiments focused on adapting and improving stochastic continuation techniques to find fixed points of the Poincare’ mappings of the moment map in the planar circular restricted three-body problem (PCR3BP). We assume that the initial conditions of the state are random variables, whose probability density function is a multivariate Gaussian (e.g. due to tracking errors). We then first find the fixed points of both the mean and covariance of the distributions and later continue their values as a function of model parameters. Considering Distant Retrograde Orbits (DROs) in the Earth-Moon system as a test case scenario, we show how these solutions find regions of the phase space where the spacecraft would stay in a bounded region for time scales that comply with mission phases and requirements, thereby enabling the design of trajectories that are robust against uncertainties. We also discuss how stochastically continued trajectories differ from their deterministic counterparts, thereby quantifying the sub-optimality of the current a-posteriori design process. By combining dynamical system theory techniques with state-of-the-art computing and differential algebra advancements, we propose a first of its kind application of stochastic continuation techniques for mission design and analyses, showing its preliminary results for the PCR3BP of the Earth-Moon system.
