The public place of science and technology in Britain underwent a dramatic change during the first half of the nineteenth century. At the end of the eighteenth century, natural philosophy was still on the whole the province of a relatively small group ofaficionados. London possessed only one institution devoted to the pursuit of natural knowledge: the Royal Society. The Royal Society also published what was virtually the only journal dealing exclusively with scientific affairs: thePhilosophical Transactions. By 1851, when the Great Exhibition opened its doors in Hyde Park to an audience of spectators that could be counted in the millions, the pursuit of science as a national need, its relationship to industrial progress were acceptable, if not uncontested facts for many commentators.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the relationship between scientific research and different types of innovation. For this, it is shown that the innovation process has a systemic character, and science is present as an integral element in the implementation of each of the considered types of innovations – production, organizational and social. A brief description of these types is given and it is shown that the contribution of science is carried out at different stages of the innovation process, considered as a process of solving a particular problem. The most significant contribution of sciences (especially natural) is to industrial innovation; social sciences have some potential to contribute to organizational innovations; the problems,that are subjects of social innovations have no scientific solving whereby the social sciences can only provide the development of options for innovations, but not the choice among them.

The relationship between knowledge management practices and quality production has not received much attention. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first objective is to investigate this relationship in the Malaysian manufacturing and service firms. The second objective is to investigate the mediating role of these firms' innovation on this relationship. Six hypothesised relationships were tested using a sample of 201 manufacturing and service firms in Malaysia. The results show that the two dimensions of knowledge management have a significant positive effect on quality production. Furthermore the results showed that innovation does not mediate the relationship between knowledge management and quality production. The implications of the study as well as suggestions for future studies are also discussed.

The main objective of this study is to determine the relationship between Lean Management (LM) and World Class Manufacturing (WCM) practices of aeronautical company in Italy. The methodology should help managers to select those principles and tools of Lean Manufacturing and WCM that are expected to be effective in their company. The research aims to integrate the two models and to achieve a global manufacturing performance in order to maximize the company performance. To this end, a methodological approach, based on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), is proposed to quantitatively evaluate relationships between LM and WCM. The proposed model allows to identify key factors of Lean and WCM practices and to measure the quantitative relationship between these strategies. The final output is a dynamic analysis designed to identify how relations change with each individual factor.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the existing knowledge about the relationships between advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), lean manufacturing (LM), agile manufacturing (AM), and business performance. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire-based survey was performed to collect data from 189 Iranian automobile part manufacturers. Statistical analysis of hypothesized relationships was conducted via partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings AMT significantly contributes to the development of both LM and AM. These manufacturing systems can co-exist in one system, and LM is a precursor to AM. LM contributes to operational performance whereas AM improves marketing performance and financial performance. Research limitations/implications Relying on the cross-sectional data of this research, and lack of generalizability of findings are key limitations. An interesting direction for future research would be to empirically offer a hybrid lean-agile approach and further map the mechanism through which this hybrid approach can be achieved in practice. Practical implications Both LM and AM are information-intensive and highly supported by AMT. They contribute to different aspects of business performance. Pursuing both cost-leadership strategy and product mix flexibility is viable via hybridizing the lean and agile systems. Originality/value This study is among the first to address issues related to the lean-AM relationship among developing countries. This study is unique in the sense it shows the mechanism through which the value of AMT is truly transformed to performance improvement.

The study has the general objective to determine the extent of the relationship between technological innovativeness and firm growth using small scale manufacturing firms in Lagos State. The independent variable of technological innovativeness was operationalized into product-oriented innovativeness and process-oriented innovativeness, while the dependent variables of firm growth were operationalized into sales growth, employment growth, growth in firm size and market shares growth. This study employs exploration correlational research design. The sample population of a small scale enterprise in Lagos State accounts for eleven thousand and forty-four (11,044). Yamane’s formula was used to get the sample size of three hundred and eighty-six (386), this was approximated to the nearest hundred to have 400 for equal distribution. Data gathered for this study was analyzed using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation analysis in order to determine the relationship between them and a simple linear regression analysis to establish the extent of relationship between them using statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 2.3. The correlation statistic shows that the linkage between the independent and dependent variables was low to moderate that product-oriented innovativeness shows a moderate positive relationship with sales and employment growth, while the process-oriented innovativeness shows low positive relationship with firm size thus allowing for regression analysis.

ABSTRACKIndonesia ranks fourth in the world out of 15 countries whose manufacturing industries contribute more than 10% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Nowadays, one of the consequences of the rapid development of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia is related to work productivity. Each person's work productivity is not the same, one of them depends on the availability of nutrients in the body. Lack of nutritional consumption for someone from standard needs will affect health conditions, activities, and work productivity. Nutritional substances in workers also affect fitness in addition to other factors such as age, health status, nutritional status, nutritional status, gender, and psychological conditions. Based on the description above, it is necessary to study the relationship between nutritional status and physical fitness of workers in manufacturing companies in Indonesia. The study was cross sectional on 120 workers from 6 manufacturing companies in Indonesia which was conducted using cluster sampling. Assessment of individual characteristics was conducted by direct interview. Assessment of nutritional intake uses the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and the results were categorized as appropriate and inappropriate based on the 2019 nutritional adequacy figure for the Indonesian population. The fitness assessment (physical capacity) used a six-minute walking test by an occupational specialist and was converted to Meters and categorized with a cut off of 4.5 Mets to be sufficient or insufficient. About one third of manufacturing workers were centrally obese. Characteristics The dietary intake according to the recommendation were only about 10%, namely the appropriate carbohydrate intake 11.7% (Frequency 8.46 times (533.22 gr)), suitable fat 12.5% (Frequency 2.75 times (57.14 gr)), and suitable protein 10% (Frequency 6.55 times (101.77 gr)). The physical capacity of manufacturing workers in Indonesia was categorized as sufficient as much as 75.8% of their workload. Factors that affect physical capacity, namely age ≥ 40 years have 4.37 times less physical capacity and protein intake affected physical capacity / fitness for workers (p = 0.02). About a third of manufacturing workers were centrally obese. The characteristic of food intake in accordance with the recommended nutritional adequacy of the Indonesian population was only about 10%. The physical capacity of manufacturing workers in Indonesia was categorized as sufficient as much as 75.8% of their workload. Factors that affected physical capacity were age and protein intake. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between organizational ambidexterity, the ability of companies to explore new and to exploit existing processes simultaneously, and manufacturing performance as represented by the sand cone model. Moreover, the paper analyses the impact of stable and dynamic environments on this relationship. Design/methodology/approach A set of research questions are tested using structural equation modeling on a sample of 231 Spanish manufacturing companies. Findings Results illustrate a significant relationship between ambidexterity as the basis and enabler for manufacturing performance improvements, building on the sand cone model and its dimensions of quality, delivery, cost, and flexibility. This relationship is further emphasized when companies work in a dynamic environment. Practical implications The study contributes to practice by investigating the important and yet under-explored relationships of ambidexterity, the sand cone model, performance, and a company’s wider market environment. Findings suggest a positive relationship between the sand cone model and ambidexterity capability. Originality/value This study adds to the limited theoretical and empirical understanding of the relationships between ambidexterity, the sand cone model, environmental dynamism, and performance. It also contributes through a set of empirical data derived from Spanish manufacturing companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship of strategic manufacturing effectiveness utilizing the four-stage model of Hayes and Wheelwright (H-W) with overall performance of manufacturing, market alignment and production competence (PC). In addition, it attempts to understand the relationship of strategic manufacturing effectiveness with manufacturing capability development modes, strategic groups of companies and the nature of improvement programs being employed. Design/methodology/approach Structured questionnaire was used to capture data from manufacturing organizations. Responses from managers of 47 Indian manufacturing companies were used to test the seven propositions that were developed to examine the paradigms of manufacturing competence. Findings The analysis revealed that the strategic manufacturing effectiveness of manufacturing companies based on H-W’s four-stage model has significant positive correlation with the overall performance of manufacturing and PC of the company. Further, the analysis substantiated the relationship of strategic manufacturing effectiveness with capability development process and the nature of improvement programs. Research limitations/implications This exploratory study is based on a small sample of manufacturing companies with diversity and hence it may not be representative of all industry sectors. Second, it has used several scales for measuring the relevant constructs which themselves are not proven, hence, the findings should be taken with caution. Originality/value This is an initial research focussing on the relationships among different elements of manufacturing competence such as manufacturing capabilities, PC, manufacturing capability development mode and overall performance of manufacturing with strategic manufacturing effectiveness using H-W model. H-W model was primarily proposed as an audit tool for managers, was hitherto not adequately studied in relation to other paradigms of manufacturing competence.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In our contemporary globalized world, Eritrean enterprises are challenged with high competition from within and from foreign counterparts. Consequently, only those companies that predict the future and take proactive decisions can win the game. However, none of these organizations have applied formal competitive intelligence practice in a proactive, disciplined, and systematic fashion to defend against threats as well as to exploit opportunities, though informally they do engage in the practice. Some of these informal competitive intelligence practicing companies are relatively 'good performers' and others are 'poor performers'. The level of this competitive intelligence performance is believed to be influenced by organizational culture. This implies that employees who are encouraged and trained to have shared values, beliefs, norms and practices are in a better position to share information and interact with each other with open minds. Here, the free flow of information is the basic ingredient that helps to produce effective competitive intelligence. In an attempt to explore if a statistically significant relationship exists between organizational culture and competitive intelligence performance, a literature study was first carried out to learn from other scholars' work. The literature review was then followed by an empirical study. This empirical part of the study attempted to investigate if Eritrean manufacturers and traders perform informal competitive intelligence practice as well as if there is a positive relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Data was collected through a questionnaire from top level managers. Of the 39 questionnaires distributed, 23 organizations properly completed the questionnaire. Statistical analysis was then computed using the SPSS package to determine the correlations. The relationship between organizational culture and competitive intelligence was determined in two ways: first, it was correlated in terms of the six selected organizational culture dimensions (employee involvement, human resources, organizational focus, communication flow, reward, and trust) and competitive intelligence; and second, in terms of scores of each firm's organizational culture and competitive intelligence. Moreover, the level of the score determined whether these companies performed well or not. In both cases a positive relationship was found between organizational culture and competitive intelligence performance. These results supported the hypothesis that organizational culture does contribute to improved competitive intelligence practice. Furthermore, the finding suggests that Eritrean firms are doing moderately good in their informal competitive intelligence.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In ons huidige globaliseerde wêreld kry Eritrea se ondernemings te doen met sterk kompetisie van binne en van buite die land. Dus floreer net daardie ondermemings wat die toekoms kan voorspel en pro-aktiewe besluite kan neem. Dit is egter waar dat nie een van hierdie organisasies formele, kompeterende intelligensiepraktyke op 'n pro-aktiewe, gedisiplineerde en sistematiese wyse toegepas het om hulself teen dreigemente te beskerm en om geleenthede uit te buit nie; informeel het hulle wel. Sommige van hierdie maatskappye wat informeel kompeterende intelligensie toepas, is betreklike 'goeie presteerders' en ander is 'swak presteerders'. Daar word geglo dat die prestasievlak van hierdie kompeterende intelligensie beïnvloed word deur organisatoriese kultuur. Die implikasie is dat werknemers wat aangemoedig en opgelei is om aan dieselfde dinge te glo en wat dieselfde waardes, norme en praktyke deel, in 'n beter posisie is om inligting te deel en met 'n ope gemoed met mekaar om te gaan. Die vrye vloei van inligting is die basiese bestanddeel wat help om doeltreffende kompeterende intelligensie te produseer. Met die doel om na te vors of daar 'n statisties sinvolle verhouding bestaan tussen organisatoriese kultuur en kompeterende intelligensie, is daar eers 'n literatuurstudie gedoen om uit ander se werk te leer. Na die literatuuroorsig is daar 'n empiriese studie gedoen. Die empiriese deel van die studie poog om na te vors of die vervaardigers en handelaars informele kompeterende intelligensie toepas en ook of daar 'n positiewe verhouding bestaan tussen die onafhanklike en afhanklike veranderlikes. Data is versamel deur middel van 'n vraelys aan hoëvlak bestuurders. Nege-en-dertig vraelyste is uitgestuur waarvan 23 volledig deur die organisasies ingevul is. Statistiese ontleding is toe gedoen om deur middel van die statistiese pakket SPSS die korrelasies te bepaal. Die verhouding tussen organisatoriese kultuur en kompeterende intelligensie is op twee maniere bepaal: dit is eers gekorreleer in terme van die ses geselekteerde organisatoriese kultuurdimensies (werknemer betrokkenheid, menslike hulpbronne, organisatoriese fokus, kommunikasievloei., beloning en vertroue) en kompeterende intelligensie; en tweedens in terme van tellings van elke maatskappy se organisatoriese kultuur en kompeterende intelligensie. Die vlak van die telling het bepaal of die maatskappy goed presteer het of nie. In albei gevalle is daar gevind dat daar 'n positiewe verhouding bestaan tussen organisatoriese kultuur en prestasie in kompeterende intelligensie. Hierdie bevindinge ondersteun die hipotese dat organisatoriese kultuur wel bydra tot verbeterde intelligensiepraktyke. Verder bewys dit dat ondernemings in Eritrea redelik goed vaar in informele kompeterende intelligensie.

This thesis presents a practice-led research investigation into ways of designing more experiential and evocative interactions with data that relates to our experiences whereby less explicit, more intrinsic and aesthetic relationships are made between people, objects and data. I argue that the utilitarian values and instrumental approach behind the design of most systems that mediate our personal autobiographical data, while important, are not appropriate for more emotional forms of remembering. Therefore, systems are needed that cater specifically to modes of remembering such as reminiscence and reflection. By learning from our material encounters with memory, there are rich opportunities for design to uncover the latent values that might exist in biographical data. To articulate the design rationale of the thesis, I describe two existing design projects: the Digital Slide Viewer and Photobox. These provide some design principles that offer guidance in making memory data physical so as to encourage meaningful material practices, and ways that interactions might be designed to promote reflection. After exploratory interviews to gather insight into the ways people associate meaning with objects a set of designed provocations were produced. The Poker Chip sought to understand the ways that the material form of an object connects to its meaning, while The Bowl investigates how the actions we might use to make these meaningful objects might in themselves be meaningful. The final designed provocation takes ideas from its predecessors, and puts them into practice with a data driven system. By responding to live data from real earthquakes, the Earthquake Shelf creates a tangible rendition that, by damaging objects, leaves behind material evidence of a remote event. During a long-term field deployment, connection between the objects on the shelf and the participant’s memories proved illusive, but the shelf itself provided a viscerally real connection to a past experience. The outcome of this thesis then is to articulate Experiential Manufacturing; a position on the design of technologies intended to mediate more emotional forms of memory, such that they can create more compelling relations between data, people, and things. It does this by first opening and exploring a design space based on alternative values for designing technologies of reminiscence that mediate our life experiences. By prioritizing the aesthetic elements of the experiences, rather than focusing on the data that describes it, this thesis explores the potential of material, liveness and slowness to create systems that mediate our experience data in more evocative and emotionally valuable ways. It then presents this position as a set of thematic values, or Strong Concepts at the heart of Experiential Manufacturing.

Working capital optimization, as an act of balancing liquidity and profitability, presents significant challenges when small businesses lack managerial expertise and access to affordable capital and credit facilities. To remain successful through efficient utilization of working capital, small business leaders need to understand the association between working capital management (WCM), working capital policy (WCP), and business profitability (PFT). Anchored in the cash conversion cycle theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between WCM, WCP, and PFT. The study employed a retrospective secondary analysis of financial data from 2004 to 2013 from a random sample of 176 publicly traded small U.S. manufacturing companies. The regression results incorporating 3 models were significant in predicting profitability in terms of gross operating profit (GOP), return on asset (ROA), and Tobin's q (TBQ). The regression results showed that WCM and WCP were significant predictors of GOP, F (5, 170) = 8.580, p < .000, R2 = .201; ROA, F (5, 170) = 4.079, p < .002, R2 = .107; and TBQ, F (5, 170) = 6.231, p < .000, R2 = .155. The overall result confirmed that WCM and WCP predicted PFT significantly (p < .05). Small business leaders may incorporate working capital optimization practices into overall corporate strategy, thereby aligning working capital needs with the changing business requirements. The implications for positive social change included the potential to provide small business leaders with knowledge of WCM and WCP as drivers of PFT. Profitable businesses may provide employees and communities with better jobs; stock ownership; and development infrastructures such as road, healthcare, and educational facilities.

In this study an in depth investigation of successful competitive strategies for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is undertaken. The overall aim of this study is to analyse the strategic orientation of UK Manufacturing SMEs. In the process, it will test Porter’s (1980, 1985) theoretical framework of generic strategies and thus evaluate firms’ preferred strategic synthesis. It will, therefore, test the efficacy of the value chain and develop any specific pattern that relates to a combination strategy. The investigation of the above objectives is undertaken utilising a mixed research methodology with the purpose of examining the applicability of existing competitive strategy frameworks (phase 1) and testing a new theoretical framework that incorporates additional dimensions of strategy (phase 2). During phase 1, Porter’s framework is employed to investigate SMEs’ strategic orientation as a means to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. A semi-structured questionnaire is employed and the analysis is carried out by means of factor and cluster analysis to identify strategic variables currently employed by SMEs. During phase 2, the theoretical framework is operationalised to bridge the gap within the literature and existing empirical research. Its purpose is to identify forms of successful competitive strategies of UK MSMEs as they are formulated and implemented in firms’ value chain activities. The data was collected through a number of semi-structured interviews and the analysis was based on data categorisation. The findings indicate that Porter’s (1980) single generic strategies are not the best option for UK MSMEs for gaining competitive advantage and that the

For manufacturing firms, having knowledge about customers is very important, in particular for the developers and designers of new products. A way in which software can help to build an information channel between the customers and the firm is through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions. Customers’ data are captured into the Customer Relationship Management solution while Business Intelligence analyses them and provide clear processed information to the developers and designers of new products. In this study we have researched if this process occurs in the industry, if and how it can be improved and what advantages it could bring to manufacturing firms. We have carried out the data collection by interviewing experts in four companies, three software companies that provide Business Intelligence solutions and one manufacturing firm. We found out that those software solutions are not used to directly connect developers and designers to customers’ data, and that there are no specific technical obstacles that prevents this, if not managerial reasons rooted in everyday practice. We also uncovered facts that would help to make this process more efficient and make customers’ data even more relevant to development.

Manufacturing leaders seek strategies to improve cross-cultural business relationships because of the increasing demand for outsourcing, which requires strong partnerships among manufacturing supply chain members. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore successful strategies that manufacturing business leaders use to improve cross-cultural business relationships within their manufacturing supply chain. The targeted population included business leaders, fluent in English, within 1 company located at 2 different manufacturing sites in the Midwest region of the United States and the Northeast region of Mexico. The capability-based view theory was used to support knowledge sharing, trust, and strategic management. Methodological triangulation of the data from interviews, direct observations during site visits, and production documentation led to 4 themes. The 4 themes that emerged from thematic analysis were: information sharing, which was key to form a strong partnerships between the 2 manufacturing sites; the development of common business tools, which facilitates the development of common technical language that both sites understood and could translate into common expectations; training of business tools and processes, which expands knowledge sharing and best practices among the 2 sites; and understanding differences of people rather than culture. The implication for positive social change includes the potential to provide strategies to business leaders within various manufacturing industries on how to overcome the challenges of trust, information sharing, and resource management and provide successful cross-cultural business relationships and profitability.

In particular, the first (early 1930 – 1957 year), the second (1957 – 1967 years), the third (1967 – the beginning of the 1990's). The fourth period covered the events after 1991. The feature of engineers training in Kharkiv for conditioner building branch is disclosed. Inconsistency of conditioner building industry state administration, which led to the curtailment of air conditioners production in Kharkiv at the beginning of the 1990's of the XX century, is highlighted. However, despite the serious complications of that time, manufacturing of air conditioners in Kharkiv survived, and the direct heir of the production center of conditioner building industry today is LLC "UkrConditioner".

To evaluate the residual stress distribution along cutting direction in hard turning process, an explicit dynamic thermo-mechanical orthogonal Finite Element Model (FEM) is developed to consider the correlation between residual stress distribution and chip morphology and plough effect by cutting edge. The FEM adopts Johnson-Cook (J-C) model to describe work material property, the critical equivalent plastic strain criterion to simulate chip separation behavior, and the revised coulomb’s law to capture the friction pattern between the tool and chip interface. The FEM is validated by comparing the predicted and experimental chip morphology and residual stress distribution. The residual stress distribution in hard machined surface along cutting direction is accurately captured by using sharp and honed cutting edge tools. The residual stresses by sharp tool demonstrate a periodical characteristic, the fluctuation amplitudes are determined in the surface and subsurface along the cutting direction, and the fluctuation frequency corresponds to that of the saw-tooth chip. However, the residual stresses by honed cutting edge tool demonstrate an indistinct periodic characteristic, the fluctuation frequency in surface and subsurface is larger than that of the saw-tooth chip. Saw-tooth chip formation process by sharp tool is identified to analyze the residual stress scatter periodic mechanism, which associates with the fluctuation of cutting force and temperature. The plough process by honed cutting edge tool is identified to explain the equilibrium effect on the amplitude and frequency of residual stress scatter in hard turned surface and subsurface. The periodical fluctuation characteristics of residual stress in hard turned surface and subsurface is revealed and verified by determining its amplitude and frequency corresponding to that of the saw-tooth chip. The analysis will enhance the fatigue life prediction accuracy by incorporating the effect of residual stresses periodical fluctuation on the crack initiation and propagation life in hard turned surface and subsurface.

High strength hollow carbon fibers with both porous and solid shell were fabricated by a combination of coaxial electrospinning and emulsion electrospinning. In the coaxial electrospinning, a Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/ Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/Dimethylformamide (DMF) emulsion was used to form the porous shell and a PAN/DMF solution was used to form the solid shell. Fiber surface and cross-section morphology was studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical property of the hollow fibers was characterized by single fiber tensile test using microelectromechanical system devices (MEMS). The effect of pores on mechanical performance of the hollow fibers was studied. Hollow carbon fibers with porous and solid shell both showed a brittle fracture behavior. The modulus and strength of the hollow carbon fibers with solid shell was ∼ 76.1 GPa and 2.04 GPa, respectively. For the hollow carbon fibers with porous shell, the porosity led to ∼ 35 % reduction in strength. The porous fibers with the mediocre strength measured here open new horizons for combining structural functionality with energy storage, in so-called structural batteries.

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) systems are crucial for today’s high accuracy machining of exotic materials. For reliable results, CBM systems need early and reliable warning based on prediction models that use multiple types of sensors. In this study, tool flank wear during end milling difficult-to-machine alloys was measured using an optical microscope. Then, vibration data collected with an accelerometer was investigated for its relationship to tool flank wear. The developed relationship between accelerometer output and tool flank wear was validated with further experiments. It was observed from frequency domain responses of these outputs that specific harmonics of the tool pass frequency were dominant, and tool flank wear can be related to the amplitude of these harmonics during machining. This way, it was shown that through accurate online prediction of tool wear, premature interruption of the process as well as machining with a worn tool can both be avoided, improving end-product quality as well as reducing machining costs.
