Substantial knowledge has accumulated on the microbiome of the hyperarid Atacama Desert during the last two decades; however, information on Atacama free-living amoebae (FLA) is limited and increasing efforts are required. FLA are polyphyletic heterotrophic naked or testate protists that feed on organic matter, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria and may disseminate infections. Amoebae in Chile are represented by 416 taxa and 64 genera, and 29 taxa have been identified in arid shrub lands at the southern limit of the Atacama Desert, and Acanthamoeba are present in all the country’s regions. To expand our knowledge and to contribute to the biogeographic distribution of Atacama FLA, we report the dominant presence of members of the genus Acanthamoeba in water and sediment sampled at the Loa and Salado rivers in the pre-Andean zone of the Antofagasta Region, northern Chile, at sites 2500 m above sea level. We expect these observations and preliminary evidence of FLA presence in other wetlands (Chiuchiu, Tebenquiche) in this region to be incentive for further exploration of Atacama amoebae.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are ubiquitous protists. Pathogenic FLA such as N. fowleri can be found in hot springs in Guadeloupe, soil being the origin of this contamination. Herein, we analyzed the diversity and distribution of FLA in soil using a targeted metataxonomic analysis. Soil samples (n = 107) were collected from 40 sites. DNA was extracted directly from soil samples or from FLA cultivated at different temperatures (30, 37 and 44 °C). Metabarcoding studies were then conducted through FLA 18SrDNA amplicons sequencing; amplicon sequence variants (ASV) were extracted from each sample and taxonomy assigned against SILVA database using QIIME2 and SHAMAN pipelines. Vermamoeba were detected in DNA extracted directly from the soil, but to detect other FLA an amoebal enrichment step was necessary. V. vermiformis was by far the most represented species of FLA, being detected throughout the islands. Although Naegleria were mainly found in Basse-Terre region, N. fowleri was also detected in Grand Terre and Les Saintes Islands. Acanthamoeba were mainly found in areas where temperature is approx. 30 °C. Vannella and Vahlkampfia were randomly found in Guadeloupe islands. FLA detected in Guadeloupe include both pathogenic genera and genera that can putatively harbor microbial pathogens, therefore posing a potential threat to human health.

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, carried by Ixodes ticks, is one of the most significant human pathogens, causing Lyme disease. As there is no standardized PCR method for detection and identification of spirochaete DNA, we carried out a comparative analysis using a set of complementary primers for three regions in the genomic DNA of these bacteria (genes fla and rrs and the non-coding rrs–rrlA region). DNA extracted from 579 Ixodes ricinus ticks was subjected to nested PCR. DNA of the examined spirochaetes was detected in 43 (7.4 %) lysates when the fla gene was used as a molecular marker, in 7 (1.2 %) lysates when using primers complementary to the rrs gene, and in 12 (2.1 %) lysates using primers complementary to the non-coding rrs–rrlA sequence. RFLP analysis based on the fla gene helped identify species from the B. burgdorferi sensu lato complex (B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia garinii, Borrelia valaisiana), detect co-infections, and also identify Borrelia miyamotoi. Therefore, the fla gene is the most sensitive and specific molecular marker for the detection and identification of Borrelia spirochaetes in I. ricinus.

The present work focuses on a local survey of free-living amoebae (FLA) that cause opportunistic and nonopportunistic infections in humans. Determining the prevalence of FLA in water sources can shine a light on the need to prevent FLA related illnesses. A total of 150 samples of tap water were collected from six districts of Sivas province. The samples were filtered and seeded on nonnutrient agar containingEscherichia colispread. Thirty-three (22%) out of 150 samples were found to be positive for FLA. The FLA were identified by morphology and by PCR using 18S rDNA gene. The morphological analysis and partial sequencing of the 18S rDNA gene revealed the presence of three different species,Acanthamoeba castellanii,Acanthamoeba polyphaga, andHartmannella vermiformis.Naegleria fowleri,Balamuthia mandrillaris, orSappiniasp. was not isolated during the study. AllA. castellaniiandA. polyphagasequence types were found to be genotype T4 that contains most of the pathogenicAcanthamoebastrains. The results indicated the occurrence and distribution of FLA species in tap water in these localities of Sivas, Turkey. Furthermore, the presence of temperature tolerantAcanthamoebagenotype T4 in tap water in the region must be taken into account for health risks.

The far-lateral approach (FLA) has become a mainstay for skull base surgeries involving the anterior foramen magnum and lower clivus. The authors present a surgical technique using the FLA for the management of lesions of the anterior/ anterolateral foramen magnum and lower clivus. The authors consider this modification a “lazy” FLA. The vertebral artery (VA) is both a critical anatomical structure and a barrier that limits access to this region. The most important nuance of this FLA technique is the management of this critical vessel. When the lazy FLA is used, the VA is reflected laterally, encased in its periosteal sheath and wrapped in the dura, greatly minimizing the risk for vertebral injury while preserving a wide working space. To accomplish this step, drilling is performed lateral to the point where the VA pierces the dura. The dura is incised medial to the VA entry point by using a slightly curved longitudinal cut. Drilling of the condyle and the C-1 lateral mass is performed in a manner that preserves craniocervical stability. The lazy FLA is a true FLA that is based on manipulation of the VA and lateral bone removal to obtain excellent exposure ventral to the spinal cord and medulla, yet it is among the most conservative FLA techniques for management of the VA and provides a safer window for bone work and lesion management. Among 44 patients for whom this technique was used to resect 42 neoplasms and clip 2 posterior inferior cerebral artery aneurysms, there was no surgical mortality and no injury to the VA.

Fluorination has been widely used in chemical synthesis, but is rare in nature. The only known biological fluorination scope is represented by theflpathway fromStreptomyces cattleyathat produces fluoroacetate (FAc) and 4-fluorothreonine (4-FT). Here we report the identification of a novel pathway for FAc and 4-FT biosynthesis from the actinomycetoma-causing pathogenNocardia brasiliensisATCC 700358. The new pathway shares overall conservation with theflpathway inS. cattleya. Biochemical characterization of the conserved domains revealed a novel fluorinase NobA that can biosynthesize 5’-fluoro-5’-deoxyadenosine (5’-FDA) from inorganic fluoride andS-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM). The NobA shows similar halide specificity and characteristics to the fluorination enzyme FlA of theflpathway. Kinetic parameters for fluoride (Km4153 μM,kcat0.073 min-1) and SAM (Km416 μM,kcat0.139 min-1) have been determined, revealing that NobA is slightly (2.3 fold) slower than FlA. Upon sequence comparison, we finally identified a distinct loop region in the fluorinases that probably accounts for the disparity of fluorination activity.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), a Begomovirus in the family Geminiviridae, is an important disease of cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in many parts of the world. Disease is managed primarily by chemical control of the vector, the sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.), and by growing resistant varieties. Resistance derived from the cultivar Tyking is being used in many breeding programs, but the location of resistance factors has not been reported. The breeding lines Fla. 8753 and Fla. 344 both have high levels of resistance to TYLCV derived from ‘Tyking’ and from S. chilense accession LA 1938, but none of their parent lines contain any of the known genes Ty-1 to Ty-4. An additional resistance locus, Ty-5, was recently identified, and to determine if this locus controls TYLCV resistance in Fla. 8753 and Fla. 344, appropriate segregating populations were analyzed using the Ty-5 marker, SlNAC1. Results show that SlNAC1 cosegregates with a recessive allele derived from ‘Tyking’. We suggest the gene symbol ty-5 be used to describe this gene. Mean disease severity of progeny homozygous for either the resistant or susceptible alleles did not equal parental levels of resistance and susceptibility, respectively, suggesting the involvement of an additional gene that is likely derived from LA1938.

A survey was conducted to determine the presence of free-living amoebae (FLA), especially Acanthamoeba and Naegleria, in river recreation areas in Tehran Province, Iran. All rivers surveyed were associated with human activity, and two were also a source of municipal tap water. Fifty-five water samples from 10 major rivers were screened for FLA and identified by morphological characters, PCR amplification targeting specific genes for Acanthamoeba (DF3 region of Rns gene) and other FLA (ITS PCR), and homology analysis. The percentage of positive FLA isolates was 27.3%, of which 80% were Acanthamoeba, assigned to the T4 and T15 genotype, and 20% were Naegleria. Isolation of Acanthamoeba T4 genotype (91.7%) from recreation areas could be a health threat and a sanitary risk associated with human activity where young people and tourists congregate in summer. Posting of warning signs and education of high-risk individuals are important for disease prevention. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of genotype T15 (clustered with A. jacobsi) identified in Iran and the first report of the distribution of FLA such as Naegleria (N. pagei, N. clarki and N. fultoni) in recreation areas in rivers of Tehran Province using molecular methods.

The art of reconstructing a real-world scene digitally has been on the mind of researchers for decades. Recently, it has attracted more and more attention from companies seeing a chance to bring this kind of technology to the market. Digital reconstruction of buildings in particular is a niche that has both potential and room for improvement. With this background, this thesis will present the design and evaluation of a pipeline made to find and correct approximately flat surfaces in architectural scenes. The scenes are 3D-reconstructed triangle meshes based on RGB images. The thesis will also comprise an evaluation of a few different components available for doing this, leading to a choice of best components. The goal is to improve the visual quality of the reconstruction. The final pipeline is designed with two blocks - one to detect initial plane seeds and one to refine the detected planes. The first block makes use of a multi-label energy formulation on the graph that describes the reconstructed surface. Penalties are assigned to each vertex and each edge of the graph based on the vertex labels, effectively describing a Markov Random Field. The energy is minimized with the help of the alpha-expansion algorithm. The second block uses heuristics for growing the detected plane seeds, merging similar planes together and extracting deviating details. Results on several scenes are presented, showing that the visual quality has been improved while maintaining accuracy compared with ground truth data.
Konsten att digitalt rekonstruera en verklig miljö har länge varit intressant för forskare. Nyligen har området även tilldragit sig mer och mer uppmärksamhet från företag som ser en möjlighet att föra den här typen av teknik till produkter på marknaden. I synnerhet är digital rekonstruktion av byggnader en nisch som har både stor potential och möjlighet till förbättring. Med denna bakgrund så presenterar detta examensarbete designen för och utvärderingen av en pipeline som skapats för att detektera och rätta till approximativt platta regioner i arkitektoniska miljöer. Miljöerna är 3D-rekonstruerade triangelmeshar skapade från RGB-bilder. Examensarbetet omfattar även utvärdering av olika komponenter för att uppnå detta, som avslutas med att de mest lämpliga komponenterna presenteras. Målet i korthet är att förbättra den visuella kvaliteten av en rekonstruerad modell. Den slutgiltiga pipelinen består av två övergripande block - ett för att detektera initiala plan och ett för att förbättra de funna planen. Det första blocket använder en multi-label energiformulering på grafen som beskriver den rekonstruerade ytan. Straffvärden tilldelas varje vertex och varje båge i grafen baserade på varje vertex label. På så sätt beskriver grafen ett Markov Random Field. Energin är sedan minimerad med alpha-expansion-algoritmen. Det andra blocket använder heuristiker för att låta planen växa, slå ihop närliggande plan och för att extrahera avvikande detaljer. Resultat på flera miljöer presenteras också för att påvisa att den visuella kvaliteten har förbättrats utan att rekonstruktionens noggrannhet har försämrats jämfört med ground truth-data.

En esta tesis se incluyen los resultados y conclusiones de un estudio de geomorfología tectónica en los Andes del Norte Chico de Chile (28,5-32°S) orientado a reconstruir la evolución del relieve desde el Neógeno en esta región. Los periodos de alzamiento principales son determinados a través del análisis geomorfológico de paleosuperficies, la geocronología de U-Pb circón en niveles volcánicos sobreyacientes y la isotopía cosmogénica. A su vez, las variaciones espaciales y temporales en la exhumación son determinadas al combinar la termocronología de trazas de fisión en apatito (AFT) y de (U-Th)/ He en apatito (AHe) con geocronología de U-Pb circón a ambos lados del frente topográfico que separa la Cordillera de la Costa de la Cordillera Frontal. Las rocas mesozoicas de la Cordillera de la Costa presentan edades AFT entre ~ 60 y 40 Ma y edades AHe alrededor de 30 Ma, mientras que las rocas Paleozoicas y Cenozoicas de la Cordillera Frontal presentan edades AFT y AHe entre ~ 40 y 8 Ma y ~ 20 y 6 Ma, respectivamente. El modelamiento termal de los datos termocronológicos indica que la Cordillera de la Costa fue exhumada de manera acelerada entre ~ 65-50 Ma y fue escasamente exhumada desde ~ 45 Ma hasta, al menos, ~ 30 Ma. La exhumación acelerada entre ~ 65-50 Ma se correlaciona con eventos tectónicos compresivos del Mesozoico Tardío al Cenozoico Temprano. Al norte de 31°S, los modelos termales indican que la exhumación comenzó antes de ~ 30 Ma al pie del frente topográfico. En este sector la exhumación fue continua hasta los 20 Ma, mientras que hacia el este, episodios de exhumación acelerada tuvieron lugar ~ 22-18 Ma y ~ 7 Ma. La exhumación Oligocena se correlaciona con la denudación de una cadena montañosa Eocena ubicada a lo largo del eje de la Cordillera Frontal, mientras que los episodios de exhumación durante el Mioceno Temprano y Tardío se correlacionan con la inversión tectónica progresiva de una cuenca extensional de intra-arco que se desarrolló durante el Oligoceno a lo largo del actual límite de Chile y Argentina. Al sur de los 31°S, el frente topográfico se habría desarrollado con posterioridad, comenzando con un episodio de exhumación acelerada entre los 22-16 Ma al pie del frente topográfico y extendiéndose hasta el Mioceno Tardío hacia el este. La exhumación acelerada a 22-16 Ma en esta área se correlaciona con la inversión de la cuenca extensional de Abanico, desarrollada entre el Eoceno y el Oligoceno al sur de 32°S. Antes del Mioceno Temprano, una extensa pediplanicie cercana al nivel del mar dominaba el paisaje de la actual Cordillera de la Costa. Al norte de los 31°S, esta superficie se desarrolló al pie de un relieve Eoceno reconocido por la termocronología, mientras que al sur de los 31°S lo hizo al oeste del cordón magmático Eoceno. El desarrollo de esta pediplanicie es consistente con la escasa exhumación sufrida por la Cordillera de la Costa durante el Eoceno-Oligoceno Tardío como indican los datos termocronológicos. La pediplanicie fue dislocada durante el Mioceno Temprano generando el alzamiento de ~ 1,1 km de la Cordillera de la Costa oriental respecto de la Cordillera de la Costa occidental. Posteriormente, durante el Mioceno Tardío, tanto la Cordillera de la Costa oriental como la occidental fueron alzadas ~ 1,2 km. Una nueva superficie de bajo relieve formada por plataformas de abrasión marina a lo largo de la costa y por strath terraces y pedimentos al interior de los valles principales se desarrolló entre el Pleistoceno Temprano y Medio en la Cordillera de la Costa occidental y finalmente se alzó ~ 150 m post-500 ka. Los principales eventos de alzamiento y/o exhumación acelerada identificados para el Mioceno Temprano, el Mioceno Tardío y el Pleistoceno Medio se correlacionan con episodios de incremento de la deformación contraccional reconocidos ampliamente a lo largo de los Andes Centrales, que habrían comenzado después del quiebre de la placa de Farallón en las placas de Nazca y Cocos a los 25 Ma.

An extensive series of evaluations have been performed on the Alloy 82/182 dissimilar metal butt welds located at the safe end regions of the CE designed reactor coolant pump suction and discharge nozzles. These nozzles present inspection coverage challenges, which hinder the likelihood of obtaining the required inspection coverage of MRP-139, and the successor document, ASME Code Case N-770. Furthermore, the geometry of the region also contributes to the difficulty of performing standard mitigation techniques. However, these nozzle regions operate at cold leg temperatures, nominally 550°F, and have a very high resistance to the potential for PWSCC, and a low predicted crack growth rate, if such a flaw were to exist in the region. This leads to the suggestion that the required inspection regimen may be too strong for these regions, and the study described herein was structured to investigate that possibility and develop a technical basis for proposing changes to inspection requirements consistent with the flaw tolerance of the region. Specifically, changes to Code Case N-770 are proposed herein, to take advantage of the flaw tolerance of the region. These proposed changes are described in this paper, and the technical basis for them is described in the remainder of the paper. The technical basis rests on three complementary findings: 1. The probability of a flaw existing or initiating in this region is very low; 2. There is a significant margin between the size flaw which would leak at a detectable rate, and the size flaw which would cause the pipe to fail. This provides a significant level of defense in depth for the region; and 3. The flaw tolerance of the region, for both axial and circumferential flaws, is very high, as measured by the size flaw which could grow to the Section XI allowable flaw size for either flaw type.

Abstract In order to predict fracture behavior of a structure with low constraint, tensile fracture tests using flat plate specimens with a surface flaw were performed at −80°C and −120°C in the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) region. The shape of the flat plate was 50mm thickness, 200mm width, and 500mm length. A semi-elliptical flaw of 5mm depth and 25mm length was introduced on the specimen’s surface. The measured KJ at fracture of the flat plate specimens were located between the predicted fracture probability bound of 5% and 95% of KJc from the laboratory specimen, C(T) and SE(B), including those for bending load obtained in the previous paper of the PVP2021 conference, Report 1. The Weibull parameters of the Weibull stress, m and σu, for the Beremin model and the parameters of the GTN model from the laboratory specimens, SE(B) and C(T) specimens, were used for the fracture probability prediction. Based on this verification result of the prediction procedure using the coupled model of the Beremin model and the GTN model, the plastic constraint correction coefficient χ, was proposed for fracture evaluation of a reactor pressure vessel. For simplification of the fracture evaluation, uniaxial loading plate models which accurately simulate the mechanical behavior of a reactor pressure vessel for representative PTS transients were applied for calculation of the coefficient χ.

Fracture toughness from a CT specimen is used as a material constant for fracture evaluation, but it has a large constraint, which provides too conservative evaluation results. In ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) region ferritic steel which is material of RPV has a large scatter and it becomes important to know the accurate scatter of an irradiated material because of less margin of RPV’s integrity after a long term operation. In this paper to establish a more precise fracture evaluation method in DBTT region for an irradiated RPV with a postulated surface flaw, fracture analysis procedures considering constraint effect, the Beremin model and damage mechanics model and a coupled model of these models were applied to the specimens with different constraints, which were 1/2TCT specimens and flat plate specimens with a semicircular flaw under tensile load. For evaluation of pure cleavage fracture of flat plate specimens, a Beremin model with plastic strain effect was applied with incorporation of plastic strain effect. Further, for ductile fracture, the local strain criterion of ASME Section VIII was applied to the specimens with different geometries and its applicability was discussed.

Abstract The flow and heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent submerged air jet impinging on a horizontal flat surface is studied. The primary aerodynamics that influence the heat transfer are shown to be the turbulent fluctuations of the free stream velocity. Two regions with distinct flow characteristics are observed, the impingement or stagnation region, and the wall-jet region. Heat transfer relations are derived for each region, based on the assumption that the sum of the laminar and turbulent component of heat flux approximates the total wall heat flux. The laminar component, hlam, of the heat transfer coefficient agrees well with published data. The turbulent component, htur, in the stagnation and wall-jet region are shown to vary linearly with the root mean square value of the fluctuating component of velocity, u’. Unlike the stagnation region, htur in the wall-jet region shows dependence on the Nozzle Reynolds Number, ReD.

Since the implementation of pressure-temperature (P-T) limit curves in the 1960s for light water reactors, the P-T limit curves have been based on the limiting locations in the reactor coolant system, which are typically the irradiated reactor pressure vessel (RPV) region adjacent to the core (beltline) and the closure head flange. Recently, it has been questioned as to whether the reactor vessel inlet or outlet nozzle corners could be more limiting due to the stress concentration at these locations. The discussion presented in this paper provides technical justification that the RPV nozzle corner P-T limit curves are bounded by the traditional P-T limit curves for the pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The current approach in evaluating the Pressurized Water Reactor Inlet and Outlet nozzle corner regions with respect to plant heatup and cooldown Pressure Temperature Limit Curves contains a number of conservatisms. These conservatisms include postulation of a large 1/4T flaw at the nozzle corner region, use of RTNDT (reference nil-ductility temperature), and fracture toughness prediction based on plane strain fracture toughness. The paper herein discusses several factors that can be considered to improve the pressure temperature limit curves for nozzle corners and increase the operating window for nuclear power plant operations. Prior to the 2013 edition, the ASME Section XI Appendix G did not require the use of a 1/4T flaw for the nozzle corners; furthermore, a smaller postulated flaw size is permissible. Based on inspection capability and experience, a smaller flaw size can easily be justified. The use of a smaller flaw size reduces the stress intensity factors and allows for the benefit of being able to take advantage of increased material toughness due to the loss of constraint at the nozzle corner geometry. The analysis herein considers the calculation of stress intensity factors for small postulated nozzle corner flaws based on a 3D finite element analysis for Westinghouse PWR inlet and outlet nozzle corner regions. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) stress intensity factors along the crack front are used in the determination of allowable pressures for the cooldown transient Pressure-Temperature limit curves.

This paper presents an improved model for postulating fabrication flaws in reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) and for the treatment of measured flaw data by probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) codes that are used for structural integrity evaluations. The model used to develop the current pressurized thermal shock (PTS) regulations conservatively postulated that all fabrication flaws were inner-surface breaking flaws. To reduce conservatisms and uncertainties in flaw-related inputs, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) has supported research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that has resulted in data on fabrication flaws from non-destructive and destructive examinations of actual RPV material. Statistical distributions have been developed to characterize the number and sizes of flaws in the various material regions of a vessel. The regions include the main seam welds, repair welds, base metal of plates and forgings, and the cladding that is applied to the inner surface of the vessel. Flaws are also characterized as being located within the interior of these regions or along the weld fusion lines that join the regions. Flaws are taken that occur at random locations relative to the embrittled inner region of the vessel. The probabilistic fracture mechanics model associates each of the simulated flaw types with the fracture properties of the region being addressed.

Abstract Finite element analysis (FEA) for creep life assessment of large-scale structures is challenging due to the highly nonlinear (iterative) nature of creep analysis, the long timescales involved, and the substantial number of FEA degrees of freedom to consider strong interaction between components in full scale system. One of the methods explored to overcome the challenges was the linear-nonlinear hybrid formulation which significantly reduces analysis time with reasonably acceptable accuracy. The approach used in the analysis takes advantage of the fact that, in practice, we are usually interested in a specific region of a system where creep develops faster than the other regions, and thus we can treat that local region as a locally nonlinear problem that will be analyzed using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) while the other regions will be analyzed using Reduced Basis Finite Element Analysis (RB-FEA). The FEA and RB-FEA regions are fully coupled via the Hybrid Solver approach, yielding an accurate solution for the overall nonlinear system. The accuracy of the solution over the entire model is maintained by employing appropriate component training processes to infer the behavior of the field over the entire model, including the linear-nonlinear interface. The paper presents the creep analysis results for simple Tee joint, multiple Tee joints in a piping, and more complicated piping system consisting of main header, sub-header, and smallbore piping, and demonstrates validity and effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing stress relaxation, cumulative creep strain, solving time and memory consumption to standard FEA.

The Conversion of Land Use and its Effects modeling framework (CLUE) was developed to simulate land use change using empirically quantified relations between land use and its driving factors in combination with dynamic modeling of competition between land use types. Being one of the most widely used spatial land use models, CLUE has been applied all over the world on different scales. In this document, we demonstrate how the model can be used to develop a multi-regional application. This means, that instead of developing numerous individual models, the user only prepares one CLUE model application, which then allocates land use change across different regions. This facilitates integration with the Integrated Economic-Environmental Modeling (IEEM) Platform for subnational assessments and increases the efficiency of the IEEM and Ecosystem Services Modeling (IEEMESM) workflow. Multi-regional modelling is particularly useful in larger and diverse countries, where we can expect different spatial distributions in land use changes in different regions: regions of different levels of achieved socio-economic development, regions with different topographies (flat vs. mountainous), or different climatic regions (dry vs humid) within a same country. Accounting for such regional differences also facilitates developing ecosystem services models that consider region specific biophysical characteristics. This manual, and the data that is provided with it, demonstrates multi-regional land use change modeling using the country of Colombia as an example. The user will learn how to prepare the data for the model application, and how the multi-regional run differs from a single-region simulation.

Albury-Wodonga, situated in Wiradjuri country, sits astride the Murray River and has benefitted in many ways from its almost equidistance from Sydney and Melbourne. It has found strength in the earlier push for decentralisation begun in early 1970s. A number of State and Federal agencies have ensured middle class professionals now call this region home. Light industry is a feature of Wodonga while Albury maintains the traditions and culture of its former life as part of the agricultural squattocracy. Both Local Councils are keen to work cooperatively to ensure the region is an attractive place to live signing an historical partnership agreement. The region’s road, rail, increasing air links and now digital infrastructure, keep it closely connected to events elsewhere. At the same time its distance from the metropolitan centres has meant it has had to ensure that its creative and cultural life has been taken into its own hands. Bactrocera dorsalis, also known as the Oriental fruit fly, is a highly polyphagous invasive pest originating from tropical south east Asia. It has invaded over 50 countries, causing significant economic damage to a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops through oviposition and larval development. The species thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, with potential to spread to warm temperate regions under irrigation or climate change. Classical biological control efforts against B. dorsalis have primarily involved the introduction of parasitic wasps, such as Fopius arisanus and Diachasmimorpha longicaudata. F. arisanus has shown high effectiveness, with significant reductions in B. dorsalis populations in Hawaii, French Polynesia, and parts of Africa, while D. longicaudata has been less successful. F. arisanus is considered the most promising biological control agent due to its high parasitism rates and adaptability, though it has not established in all regions. Other natural enemies, including various hymenopteran parasitoids and the predatory ant Oecophylla longinoda, have shown limited effectiveness and potential ecological drawbacks. Combining F. arisanus with other biological control agents targeting different life stages of B. dorsalis could enhance overall control efforts.

The Mexican fruit fly (Anastrepha ludens) is a major pest of mango and citrus, causing significant damage through larval tunneling and fruit rotting. Native to Central America, it has also been found in the southern USA and poses a potential threat to the Mediterranean region. Classical biological control efforts began in the 1950s with the introduction of various parasitoids, though only Diachasmimorpha longicaudata and Aceratoneuromyia indica established successfully. Diachasmimorpha longicaudata remains the most effective, achieving up to 33% parasitism in augmentative releases. Other promising natural enemies include Doryctobracon crawfordi and Coptera haywardii, both native to the Neotropics. Numerous other parasitoids and predators, such as ants and spiders, contribute to A. ludens control, but their specific impacts and potential for biological control programs require further study.

I mange sammenhenger omtales arbeidsinnvandrere som midlertidig arbeidskraft. For Vestlandet er de mye mer. De er og vil i fremtiden fortsatt kunne være en viktig ressurs for næringer og lokalsamfunn. Men dette forutsetter strategier og engasjement fra berørte lokale og regionale aktører, foruten selvsagt også vilje til deltakelse fra arbeidsinnvandrerne selv. Disse temaene har vært de sentrale i forskningsprosjektet “Arbeidsinnvandring til Vestlandet. Arbeidsinnvandring som ressurs i regional utvikling” som har vært gjennomført i de fire vestlandsfylkene Møre og Romsdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland og Rogaland i perioden 2013-2016. Prosjektet har hatt som hovedmål å utvikle kunnskap om arbeidsinnvandringens rolle og betydning i regionen. Vi har særlig lagt vekt på i hvilken grad og hvordan kommunene på Vestlandet, i eget arbeid og i samarbeid med andre aktører, har håndtert arbeidsinnvandringen slik at det ressurspotensialet som denne gruppen representerer for arbeidslivet og samfunnslivet har blitt ivaretatt på best mulig måte. Prosjektet har bestått av tre delprosjekt som hver for seg belyser ulike sider ved kommuners og fylkeskommuners måte å arbeide på i møte med arbeidsinnvandringen til landsdelen. Første delprosjekt har lagt vekt på å fremskaffe ny kunnskap om hvem arbeidsinnvandrerne til Vestlandet er, hvor de bosetter seg og hvilke næringer de arbeider innenfor samt hvilke effekter arbeidsinnvandringen kan sies å ha, særlig når det gjelder demografisk utvikling og næringsliv. Delprosjekt to har omhandlet møtet mellom arbeidsinnvandrerne og det kommunale tjenesteapparatet, kommunenes politikk og organisering av tjenestetilbudet overfor arbeidsinnvandrerne som gruppe samt hvordan tjenestetilbudet overfor denne gruppen fungerer. Delprosjekt tre har belyst kommunenes og fylkeskommunenes tilrettelegging av informasjon for arbeidsinnvandrere og hvorvidt denne målgruppen opplever denne informasjonen som relevant og tilfredsstillende. Resultatene fra de tre delprosjektene blir grundig redegjort for i hver sin del av den foreliggende rapporten, henholdsvis i kapittel 2, 3 og 4. Avslutningsvis, i kapittel 5, forsøker vi i kortform å trekke frem hovedpoenger og motivasjon for at kommuner og fylkeskommuner på Vestlandet skal jobbe videre med de utfordringer som har kommet frem i vår forskning. I dette innledende kapitlet gis en samlet oversikt over forskningsprosjektet. Bakgrunn, problemstillinger og opplegg blir gjort nærmere rede for i avsnittene 1.1 – 1.3. Hva vi har funnet gjennom våre undersøkelser fremgår så av avsnittene 1.4 – 1.9. I avsnitt 1.10 trekkes frem noen utfordringer som vil være viktig å gripe fatt i for å realisere det potensial som arbeidsinnvandrere representerer for landsdelen.

Bactrocera zonata, commonly known as the peach fruit fly, is a polyphagous pest native to tropical Asia, causing significant damage to various fruit crops, especially guava, mango and peach. It has spread to Southern and south east Asia, Egypt and other North African countries. The introduction of the pest to new areas is primarily driven by international tourism and trade of infested fruit. Its ability to establish in new regions is influenced by temperature and humidity, with potential for expansion under climate change. Despite its severity, few biological control efforts have been documented due to limited knowledge of potential natural enemies. Efforts in Africa have included releasing parasitoids, such as Aganaspis daci, Fopius arisanus, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata and Psyttalia incisi, with partial success. F. arisanus shows promise as a biological control agent, capable of parasitizing B. zonata in laboratory conditions, but may face climatic challenges in North Africa. Other natural enemies have been identified, but their low parasitism rates make them less viable for biological control. Further research is needed to assess the potential of various parasitoids for controlling B. zonata effectively.

The geophysical data sets available for the western Churchill Province have had a bearing on the understanding of its structure, evolution, and metal endowment. New data were acquired and interpreted during the Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) program (2008-2020). Regional, high-resolution aeromagnetic, and targeted gravity and magnetotelluric surveys were collected in GEM, in conjunction with geological mapping projects, in order to provide control on bedrock features beneath widespread glacial overburden and flat-lying sedimentary basins. Quantitative estimates of three-dimensional geometry were obtained in key areas through geophysical models, integrating the geophysical characteristics with local rock-property measurements. These geophysical data sets contributed to new knowledge and interpretations in three related research fields: location and nature of Rae Craton's boundaries within the western Churchill Province; definition of internal Rae architecture; and identification of reactivated structures controlling gold and uranium mineralization. The new data, models, and emerging tectonic and metallogenic frameworks will serve as guides for future exploration in this remote, complex, challenging region.
