In 1985, groundwater pumping from shallow aquifers, with off-farm disposal, began near Girgarre in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria, to provide salinity control to about 1000 ha of farming land. Two groundwater pumps (TI02 and T103) ran continuously for the first 5 years of the project before reverting to intermittent pumping. The operation of a third pump (T103) was based on the capacity for disposal into an evaporation basin. Following 3 years of groundwater pumping, significant reductions in root-zone (0-0.6 m) soil salinity levels were recorded in both annual and perennial pasture paddocks within 350 m of a pump. Yields of perennial pasture on all monitored paddocks showed a significant increase after commencement of the project. In a paddock 300 m from a groundwater pump, average dry matter production increased from 6.3 to 17.2 t/ha. year within 4 years of pumping. Reclamation was reduced by more than a year on paddocks not subjected to irrigation, or those located >800 m from a groundwater pump. Once reclamation was achieved from continuous pumping, the introduction of intermittent pumping continued to maintain optimum soil salinity and pasture production levels on the irrigated paddocks. However, on a dryland paddock and those located >800 m from a pump, increasing fluctuations in soil salinity and soil sodicity levels were measured under this management regime.

It is often assumed that saline coastal wetlands experience environmental conditions so severe that they are largely immune to invasion by exotic plant species. The belief is implicit in many older reviews of threats to mangroves and coastal saltmarshes, where a limited range of vascular plant taxa, often focussing on *Spartina, (throughout the paper an asterisk denotes an introduced (exotic) species as per Carr 2012) have been invoked as the major species of concern. Even though the weed flora of southern Australia is derived largely from agriculture and horticulture, neither of which includes many species tolerant of waterlogged, variably saline environments, a recent assessment of Victorian saline coastal wetlands indicated that exotic plants were the third-most pervasive threat, after land ‘reclamation’ and grazing. Tall wheat grass, *Lophopyrum ponticum (Podp.) A.Love., is one of the most severe and widely distributed weeds of saline coastal wetlands in south-eastern Australia. It is promoted by the agricultural extension arm of the Victorian government as a salt-tolerant pasture grass; however, its broad ecological amplitude and robust life form make it a most serious invader of upper saltmarsh in Victoria. We assessed the effectiveness of different control measures, including slashing and herbicides, for the management of *L. ponticum infestations (and their side effects on saltmarsh communities) in the Western Port region of Victoria. A nominally monocot-specific herbicide widely used to control *Spartina, Fluazifop-P, was ineffective in controlling *L. ponticum. The broad-spectrum systemic herbicide glyphosate was more effective in controlling *L. ponticum, but had undesirable impacts on native plant species. Controlling weeds in coastal wetlands using available herbicides for use near coastal waterways would seem to remain problematic.

The effects of climate change in the face of land reclamation among other anthropogenic activities are of great concern to aquatic genetic resources and biodiversity. This study was designed to assess the preliminary impact of the proposed Eko Atlantic City (EAC) project on the aquatic lives and/or biodiversity, and the level of development and challenges that have implications on climate change in Victoria Island and its environs in Lagos State, Nigeria. The selected areas such as Lamgbasa, Badore, Ajah and Victoria Island were evaluated using the snowball sampling approach, whereby 111 respondents were assessed. Results showed that land reclamation and construction activities had impacted on the aquatic lives and the primitive fishing occupation (5.5%). Respondents (44.4%) agreed that the on-going EAC had contributed to the development of Lagos State, however, negative impacts of climate change such as ocean surge, sea level rise, flooding among others were high but with low level of adaptive capacity agreement (41.7%). Furthermore, analysis showed varying degrees in the extent of severity of problems encountered from climate change effects such as rainfall, flooding, temperature, health issues among others. The study revealed that these communities were susceptible or vulnerable to the impacts of climate change such as coastal erosion, flooding, storm/ocean surge, sea level rise etc and importantly loss of non- renewable aquatic genetic resources. The government is hereby advised to have sound policies for adaptation and mitigation strategies to protect these non-renewable genetic resources and effect of climate change activities. Les effets du changement climatique face à la mise en valeur des terres, entre autres activités anthropiques, sont très préoccupants pour les ressources génétiques aquatiques et la biodiversité. Cette étude a été conçue pour évaluer l'impact préliminaire du projet proposé Eko Atlantic City (EAC) sur la vie aquatique et / ou la biodiversité, ainsi que le niveau de développement et les défis qui ont des implications sur le changement climatique dans l'île Victoria et ses environs dans l'État de Lagos, Nigeria. Les zones sélectionnées telles que Lamgbasa, Badore, Ajah et Victoria Island ont été évaluées à l'aide de la méthode d'échantillonnage en boule de neige, qui a permis d'évaluer 111 répondants. Les résultats ont montré que la remise en état des terres et les activités de construction avaient eu un impact sur la vie aquatique et l'occupation de la pêche primitive (5.5%). L'étude a révélé que ces communautés étaient sensibles ou vulnérables aux impacts du changement climatique tels que l'érosion côtière, les inondations, les tempêtes / ondes océaniques, l'élévation du niveau de la mer, etc. et surtout la perte de ressources génétiques aquatiques non renouvelables. Il est conseillé au gouvernement de se doter de politiques solides pour les stratégies d'adaptation et d'atténuation afin de protéger ces ressources génétiques non renouvelables et les effets des activités liées aux changements climatiques.

Taking Guangxi agriculture and cultivation state-owned Jinguang Farm, Qianjiang Farm, Xinxing Farm and Liangqi Farm as land reclamation cases studies, 16 evaluation indices were selected from four aspects, i.e., investment in land reclamation project, implementation intensity of land reclamation, land use structure, and efficiency output of land reclamation, to evaluate the reasonability of land reclamation in the project area. The improved TOPSIS method and obstacle degree model were used to evaluate reasonability and diagnose obstacle factors. Results showed that the efficiency output of land reclamation had the greatest impact on its reasonability, followed by land use structure, with investment of land reclamation project having the least impact. The index obstacle factors mainly referred to the improved value of land quality. Through analysis of the evaluation results, the reasonability and obstacle factors of land reclamation were objectively determined to provide a reference for land reclamation in practice.

Chapter 3 investigates the most popular genre of Victorian Scottish poetry, nostalgic pastoral in a sentimental mode. It argues that this kind of poetry should not be dismissed, because it intervenes in different ways in politicized arguments about land ownership and access. The chapter is divided into three subsections. The first shows how pastoral poetry in the newspaper press intervened directly in rights of way debates. Scotland experienced a number of significant legal cases in the nineteenth century over rights of way, and these were usually couched in terms of the poor versus the wealthy landowner or aristocrat. It shows that poetry played an important role in represented and commenting on these cases. The second section follows the debate about agricultural improvement in Victorian Scotland, and considers both poems that reject modern ‘improvements’ (e.g. the reclamation of wild land through draining and new agricultural techniques), and those that support it. The final part of the chapter turns to the ways in which emigrant poets represented Scotland’s landscape and figured the same questions about change, progress (or lack of), and land rights from positions outside Scotland.

This paper highlights some practical considerations of soil structure interactions in the design of the breakwater for a land reclamation project at Da Ya Bay, Southern China sea, through three-dimensional finite element analysis. A pile-breakwater-foundation system is evaluated during its construction and after construction has been completed. The maximum deflections and moments of the piles take place in the soft marine clay underneath the breakwater. The deformation of the soft soil imposes great impact on the slender pile. Based on the study, it is considered inadequate to solely increase the density and stiffness of the piles, as it will not effectively reduce the deformation of the foundation as well as the moment of the pile. On the contrary, the increased stiffness results in significant increase of the stresses in the pile. Consequently, the deformation of pile should be evaluated in terms of interactions between soil and pile. Improvement of the soft marine clay is also of great importance.
