AbstractThe main goal of the paper is to prove the existence of the universal cover for {\mathsf{RCD}^{*}(K,N)}-spaces. This generalizes earlier work of [43, 44] on the existence of universal covers for Ricci limit spaces. As a result, we also obtain several structure results on the (revised) fundamental group of {\mathsf{RCD}^{*}(K,N)}-spaces. These are the first topological results for {\mathsf{RCD}^{*}(K,N)}-spaces without extra structural-topological assumptions (such as semi-local simple connectedness).

AbstractIn this paper, we generalize the finite generation result of Sormani to non-branching RCD(0, N) geodesic spaces (and in particular, Alexandrov spaces) with full supportmeasures. This is a special case of the Milnor’s Conjecture for complete non-compact RCD(0, N) spaces. One of the key tools we use is the Abresch–Gromoll type excess estimates for non-smooth spaces obtained by Gigli–Mosconi.

This thesis is about some recent developments on Geometric Analysis and Geometric Measure Theory on RCD(K,N) metric measure spaces that have been obtained in [8,48,49,51,52,171]. After the preliminary Chapter 1, where we collect the basic notions of the theory relevant for our purposes, Chapter 2 is dedicated to the presentation of a simplified approach to the structure theory of RCD(K,N) spaces via δ- splitting maps developed in collaboration with Brué and Pasqualetto. The strategy is similar to the one adopted by Cheeger-Colding in the theory of Ricci limit spaces and it is suitable for adaptations to codimension one. Chapter 3 is devoted to the proof of the constancy of the dimension conjecture for RCD(K,N) spaces. This has been obtained in a joint work with Brué, where we proved that dimension of the tangent space is the same almost everywhere with respect to the reference measure, generalizing a previous result obtained by Colding-Naber for Ricci limits. The strategy is based on the study of regularity of flows of Sobolev vector fields on spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below, which we find of independent interest. In Chapters 4 and 5 we present the structure theory for boundaries of sets of finite perimeter in this framework, as developed in collaboration with Ambrosio, Brué and Pasqualetto. An almost complete generalization of De Giorgi’s celebrated theorem is given, opening to further developments for Geometric Measure Theory in the setting of synthetic lower bounds on Ricci curvature. In Chapter 6 we eventually collect some results about sharp lower bounds on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the p-Laplacian based on a joint work with Mondino. We also address the problems of rigidity and almost rigidity, heavily relying on the compactness and stability properties of RCD spaces.

Le but principal de ce manuscrit est celui de présenter une nouvelle méthode d'interpolation entre des probabilités inspirée du problème de Schrödinger, problème de minimisation entropique ayant des liens très forts avec le transport optimal. À l'aide de solutions au problème de Schrödinger, nous obtenons un schéma d'approximation robuste jusqu'au deuxième ordre et différent de Brenier-McCann qui permet d'établir la formule de dérivation du deuxième ordre le long des géodésiques Wasserstein dans le cadre de espaces RCD* de dimension finie. Cette formule était inconnue même dans le cadre des espaces d'Alexandrov et nous en donnerons quelques applications. La démonstration utilise un ensemble remarquable de nouvelles propriétés pour les solutions au problème de Schrödinger dynamique :- une borne uniforme des densités le long des interpolations entropiques ;- la lipschitzianité uniforme des potentiels de Schrödinger ;- un contrôle L2 uniforme des accélérations. Ces outils sont indispensables pour explorer les informations géométriques encodées par les interpolations entropiques. Les techniques utilisées peuvent aussi être employées pour montrer que la solution visqueuse de l'équation d'Hamilton-Jacobi peut être récupérée à travers une méthode de « vanishing viscosity », comme dans le cas lisse.Dans tout le manuscrit, plusieurs remarques sur l'interprétation physique du problème de Schrödinger seront mises en lumière. Cela pourra aider le lecteur à mieux comprendre les motivations probabilistes et physiques du problème, ainsi qu'à les connecter avec la nature analytique et géométrique de la dissertation
Main aim of this manuscript is to present a new interpolation technique for probability measures, which is strongly inspired by the Schrödinger problem, an entropy minimization problem deeply related to optimal transport. By means of the solutions to the Schrödinger problem, we build an efficient approximation scheme, robust up to the second order and different from Brenier-McCann's classical one. Such scheme allows us to prove the second order differentiation formula along geodesics in finite-dimensional RCD* spaces. This formula is new even in the context of Alexandrov spaces and we provide some applications.The proof relies on new, even in the smooth setting, estimates concerning entropic interpolations which we believe are interesting on their own. In particular we obtain:- equiboundedness of the densities along the entropic interpolations,- equi-Lipschitz continuity of the Schrödinger potentials,- a uniform weighted L2 control of the Hessian of such potentials. These tools are very useful in the investigation of the geometric information encoded in entropic interpolations. The techniques used in this work can be also used to show that the viscous solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation can be obtained via a vanishing viscosity method, in accordance with the smooth case. Throughout the whole manuscript, several remarks on the physical interpretation of the Schrödinger problem are pointed out. Hopefully, this will allow the reader to better understand the physical and probabilistic motivations of the problem as well as to connect them with the analytical and geometric nature of the dissertation

This thesis is devoted to the study of structural properties of non-smooth spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below. The first part concerns with the structure theory of RCD(K,N) spaces: we prove the existence of the so-called essential dimension, along with rectifiability properties of the regular set. This theory is a result of many contributions [43,72,91,95,109,121], in our presentation we closely follow the recent works [41,43]. The second part of this thesis deals with codimension-1 structures on RCD(K,N) spaces. More precisely we study structural properties of boundaries of sets with finite perimeter, generalising the celebrated De Giorgi theory [65, 66] to this framework. This is based on the works [7,40].

In this Thesis, we analyze three variational and geometric problems, that extend classical Euclidean issues of the calculus of variations to more general classes of spaces. The results we outline are based on the articles [Ved21; MV21] and on a forthcoming joint work with Nicolussi Golo and Serra Cassano. In the first place, in Chapter 1 we provide a general introduction to metric measure spaces and some of their properties. In Chapter 2 we extend the classical Talenti’s comparison theorem for elliptic equations to the setting of RCD(K,N) spaces: in addition the the generalization of Talenti’s inequality, we will prove that the result is rigid, in the sense that equality forces the space to have a symmetric structure, and stable. Chapter 3 is devoted to the study of the Bernstein problem for intrinsic graphs in the first Heisenberg group H^1: we will show that under mild assumptions on the regularity any stationary and stable solution to the minimal surface equation needs to be intrinsically affine. Finally, in Chapter 4 we study the dimension and structure of the singular set for p-harmonic maps taking values in a Riemannian manifold.

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo descrever e conceituar o habitual sistema de remoção dos resíduos de construção e demolição, ou RCD, através do preenchimento de recipientes metálicos avulsos posicionados nos espaços públicos urbanos fronteiros às obras - mais conhecido como sistema de caçambas estacionárias - particularmente quando praticado em comunidades de médio porte do interior, e das conseqüências ou influencias de sua adoção sobre a malha viária urbana local, mediante uma análise de sua efetivação em seis cidades médias situadas no centro-oeste do Estado de São Paulo, assim como aportar subsídios sobre esse assunto, preconizando o desenvolvimento de metodologia apropriada.
The objective of this work is to describe and to concept the commonly system used to remove away the C&DD (construction and demolition debris), by filling single mettalic open up boxes located in the nearest urban public spaces of the building site - that it\'s so-called stationary skips or dump-cart system - specially when used in medium size communities in the Brazil\'s hinterland, and the consequences or influencies of its adoption concerning the local urban street\'s net, based upon an analysis of its reality in six medium towns in the middle-west of São Paulo State, as well to increase knowledge about this matter, and precognize the development of one proper methodology.

The effects of spatial structure are explored using a simple model of migration between two populations, each in a balance between mutation and stabilising selection on an additive polygenic trait. Gene flow can maintain genetic variance within each population, albeit at low levels. If the optimum fluctuates in time, much higher levels of genetic variation can be maintained within populations, and in the presence of isolation divergence between the populations can be seen. Biotic interactions may be an important factor maintaining variation within and between populations, and these may lead to Red Queen dynamics even in constant environments. Here I define the Red Queen very broadly as "ongoing coevolution", and discuss the use of the terms 'coevolution' and 'ongoing'. I suggest that different Red Queen type processes can be classified the amount of novelty available in the system and by whether or not increasing sophistication occurs. In this thesis I model a specific biotic interaction: the coevolution of parasites with the acquired immunity of their hosts. High levels of linkage disequilibrium (strain structure) can be maintained in this system, and for a large range of parameters Red Queen type dynamics are observed. In some cases fluctuations in linkage disequilibrium and epistasis may result in a fairly large advantage to sexual over asexual recombination. However, this advantage is not large enough to outweigh the "two-fold cost of sex". This deterministic advantage arises primarily because recombination impedes the response to fluctuating epistasis rather than because it facilitates the response to directional selection. Sex may also be advantageous in the presence of Red Queen type dynamics because sexual genotypes that are stochastically lost can be recreated through recombination, unlike their asexual counterparts.

Fluid flow in porous media is important for a number of fields including nuclear waste disposal, oil and gas, fuel cells, water treatment and civil engineering. The aim of this work is to improve the current understanding of how the pore space governs the fluid flow in porous media in the context of nuclear waste disposal. The effects of biofilm formation on flow are also investigated. The thesis begins with a review of the current porous media characterisation techniques and the means for converting the pore space into pore network models and their existing applications. Further, I review the current understanding of biofilm lifecycle in the context of porous media and its interactions with fluid flow. The model porous media used in this project is Hollington sandstone. The pore space of the material is characterised by X-ray CT and the equivalent pore networks from two popular pore network extraction algorithms are compared comprehensively. The results indicate that different pore network extraction algorithms could interpret the same pore space rather differently. Despite these differences, the single-phase flow properties of the extracted networks are in good agreement with the estimates from a direct approach. However, it is recommended that any flow or transport study using pore network modelling should entail a sensitivity study aiming to determine if the model results are extraction method specific. Following these results, a pore merging algorithm is introduced aimed to improve the over segmentation of long throats and hence improve the quality of the extracted statistics. The improved model is used to study quantitatively the pore space evolution of shale rock during pyrolysis. Next, the extracted statistics from one of the algorithms is used to explore the potential of regular pore network models for up-scaling the flow properties of porous materials. Analysis showed that the anisotropic flow properties observed in the irregular models are due to the different number of red (critical) features present along the flow direction. This observation is used to construct large regular models that can mimic that behaviour and to discuss the potential of estimating the flow properties of porous media based on their isotropic and anisotropic properties. Finally, a long-term flow-through column experiment is conducted aiming to understand the effects of bacterial colonisation on flow in Hollington sandstone. The results show that such systems are quite complex and are susceptible to perturbations. The flow properties of the sandstone were reduced significantly during the course of the experiment. The possible mechanisms responsible for the observed reductions in permeability are discussed and the need for developing new imaging techniques that can allow examining biofilm development in-situ is underlined as necessary for drawing more definitive conclusions.

We present the observations, reduction and preliminary analysis of a sample of 45 mid-to-high redshift galaxy clusters imaged with the Spitzer Space Telescope's MIPS camera at 24 ~m and selected from the Red Sequence Cluster Survey. The purpose of the data set is motivated by a broad review of studies into the evolutionary trends of galaxy clusters and their constituent galaxy populations, focusing specifically on recent results that indicate clusters are environmental drivers of dusty starburst and active galactic nuclei activity. To accommodate the large amount of data in hand, we have constructed an extensive data reduction pipeline for the MIPS data and describe its development and output in detail. Using the resulting catalogues for introductory analysis, we find strong evidence for an excess luminous infrared galaxy population in galaxy clusters at high redshift and discuss the implications of this discovery in terms of cluster evolution and motivate future work.

The chapter focuses on two art projects in Copenhagen, Denmark. The first one is The Red Square, a part of the public park Superkilen in the multicultural Nørrebro district. Designed by the artist group Superflex (in collaboration with architects from Bjarke Ingels Group and Topotek1), Superkilen opened in 2012. The second project is Jeannette Ehlers and La Vaughn Belle's collaboration on the sculpture I Am Queen Mary. Installed outside an old colonial Warehouse in Copenhagen harbour in 2018, it is the first monument in the country to commemorate Danish colonialism and complicity in the transatlantic slave trade. Borrowing a term from Chantal Mouffe, these projects could be characterized as »agonistic« interventions into public urban space. The chapter argues that they may provide us with some much-needed answers to the important question of the much debated yet crucial role of public art in democratic societies, particularly how works of art may form a possible loophole of escape from dominant discourses by openly contesting, or subtly circumventing, monocultural understandings of national heritage and identity, thereby helping us to imagine national and urban community otherwise, i.e. as postmigrant communities. The chapter examines what the re-configurative power of art might accomplish in postmigrant public spaces by considering the following questions: How can public art open up a social and national imagination pervaded by anxieties about (post)migration to other ways of thinking about diversity and collective identity? Furthermore, is it possible to identify a common pattern - i.e. a particular postmigrant strategy - that underpins and interconnects various types of artistic interventions into public spaces and debates, which, on the surface, present themselves as radically different kinds of projects?

Reverse Electro-Dialysis, RED, utilises the energy of mixing between two solutions of different salinity by allowing ionic current to pass through the membranes and the two solutions such that cations are transport to the cathode and anions to the anode. [1–4.] The ionic current is converted to electronic current by red-ox reactions at the cathode and the anode. The membranes applied in this process are ionic selective, traditionally of uniform thickness and separated by a non-conductive spacer [5, 6]. Traditionally, non-conductive spacers have been deployed as eddy promoters and membrane spacers in salinity difference power extraction systems, such as Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) and Reverse Electro-Dialysis (RED). For RED, traditional spacers inhibit parts of the ionic current paths in the fluid compartments and magnify the pressure drop imposed by the fluid flow between the membranes. [6] In a strive to lower the pressure drop in the fluid flow compartment and to increase the conductive region between the membranes, it is suggested to manufacture membranes with new shapes and profiles. [6] By modeling transport of mass and momentum in different geometries, spacing, mixing and active membrane area can be optimised with respect to increasing the power extraction. Such work has previously been done for traditional, i.e. non-electrochemical, flow in spacer separated membrane systems. A classical, approach has been to study submerged and non-submerged non-conductive spacer rods in fluid flow between two parallel plates (membranes) for Reynolds numbers (Re) from 50 and upwards. [7–17] This work discusses how spacers united with the reactant surface (membrane) will affect the mixing and the pressure drops of RED systems with Re numbers between 1 and 100, the expected operational Re number range for RED [6, 18, 19]. This is essential for the power production of RED. For a process converting renewable energy present in nature, such as RED, optimising these parameters is detrimental for the exergy yield. In going from a laboratory scale with a 10 × 10 cm2 cross sectional membrane to a large scale of 100 × 100 cm2, the Reynolds number (Re) increases from 10 to 100 simply because the volume flow is proportional to the flow length. Since it is within this range that eddies starts to get promoted by spacers, different mixing properties is expected exist when comparing laboratory and industrial scaled RED systems.

The RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) is Canada's latest system of C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Earth observation satellites. The system of three satellites, spaced equally in a common orbit, allows for a rapid four-day repeat interval. The RCM has been designed with a selection of stripmap, spotlight, and ScanSAR beam modes which offer varied combinations of spatial resolution and coverage. Using Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) techniques, the growing archive of SAR data gathered by RCM can be used for change detection and ground deformation monitoring for diverse applications in Canada and around the world. In partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO) has developed an automated system for generating standard and advanced deformation products and change detection from SAR data acquired by RCM and RADARSAT-2 satellites using DInSAR processing methodology. Using this system, this paper investigates four key interferometric properties of the RCM system which were not available on the RADARSAT-1 or RADARSAT-2 missions: The impact of the high temporal resolution of the four-day repeat cycle of the RCM on temporal decorrelation trends is tested and fitted against simple temporal decay models. The effect of the normalization and the precision of the radiometric calibration on interferometric spatial coherence is investigated. The performance of the RCM ScanSAR mode for wide area interferometric analysis is tested. The performance of the novel RCM Compact-polarization (CP) mode for interferometric analysis is also investigated.

M. Sergeyev’s article “Ukrainian National Idea in the Modern Ukrainian Media Space” states that modern Ukrainian philosophical thought tries to get rid of the flaws and stereotypes of its one-sided orientation “to the East” and tries to establish a European orientation in the minds of Ukrainian citizens. The theoretical proof of the new worldview took place throughout the formation of the Ukrainian state from Little Russia to Ukraine and presents its actual struggle for independence. It is an integral concept that reflects the process of forming theories and views of prominent Ukrainian thinkers on the place and role of Ukrainians in the becoming and development of an independent Ukrainian state. As O. Zabuzhko emphasizes, “all Ukrainian philosophical, historical, sociological thought of the past and our centuries (including the diaspora) is permeated with the sacred idea of nationalism”. The author concludes that the logic of the historical development of the Ukrainian national idea reveals only one model of its socio-political future, which implies the need for Ukraine’s integration into the European and world community. This path requires the moral and political readiness of the entire Ukrainian society for its implementation and prevents the emergence of any other - alternative ideas. Solving this problem is complicated by the need to return to Ukraine the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Of course, this model will lead to significant political and economic tensions in society (the final severance of economic relations with Russia, the closure of non-competitive industries, the outflow of labor to the west). At the same time, the orientation of the Ukrainian national idea to the west will increase competition in all branches of production and will be a condition for further self-improvement of Ukrainian society.

This report summarises key institutional lessons that emerged from a Learning Journey commissioned by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for its Covid-19 Responses for Equity (CORE) programme. Learning Journeys are a research method developed by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) to support collaborative scoping processes and provide participants with structured spaces to learn, discuss issues, and to reflect on their day-to-day work and how to apply learning. CORE was designed as a rapid response mechanism to address the sudden global shifts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The initiative supports 21 research projects with Southern partners across 42 countries. It seeks to understand the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic, improve existing responses, and generate better policy options for recovery. The CORE Learning Journey was managed by the ‘Knowledge Translation’ (KT) supplier for CORE, the UK-based IDS. It brought together grantees, IDRC senior management, Regional Directors (RD), Program Officers (PO), and IDS staff, to share experiences and reflect on the successes and challenges of the CORE programme. It was framed around a central learning question: What are the key lessons to emerge from the IDRC experience of funding CORE as a responsive mechanism to provide innovative Southern-led policy and practice solutions in the context of a rapid onset and rapidly evolving global crisis?

Family violence is a critical development challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), carrying high health, social, and economic costs and increasing the risk of perpetuating the cycle of violence across generations. Parenting programs have improved parenting practices in high-income countries. However, evidence for LMICs is sparse. This study evaluates an intervention to reduce coercive parenting implemented by the Ministry of National Security of Jamaica, which targeted caregivers of children aged 6 to 15 in vulnerable communities in the country. Treated caregivers were visited by a parental trainer for six months and invited to three sessions of a group training workshop during that period. We conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the interventions impact. Using data from a follow-up survey completed six months after the intervention, we find robust evidence of reduced coercive parenting practices among treated caregivers compared to the control group. The improvement is due to a reduction in the reported likelihood of caregivers yelling and beating their children for misbehaving. The effect is greater for caregivers with higher pre-intervention levels of coercive parenting. The results provide evidence that parenting interventions can effectively reduce coercive parenting among caregivers of school-aged children in highly violent middle-income settings.

Invasive exotic plant (IEP) species are a significant threat to natural ecosystem integrity and biodiversity, and controlling them is a high priority for the National Park Service. The North-ern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) selected the early detection of IEPs as one of 11 monitoring protocols to be implemented as part of its long-term monitoring program. This report represents work completed at Colorado National Monument during 2019. During monitoring conducted June 12–19, a total of 20 IEP species were detected on monitoring routes and transects. Of these, 12 were priority species that accounted for 791 separate IEP patches. IEPs were most prevalent along riparian areas. Yellow sweetclover (Melilotis officinale) and yellow salsify (Tragopogon dubius) were the most commonly detected priority IEPs along monitoring routes, representing 73% of all priority patches. Patches of less than 40 m2 were typical of nearly all priority IEP species except yellow sweetclover. A patch management index (PMI) was created by combining patch size class and percent cover for each patch. In 2019, a large majority of priority IEP patches were assigned a PMI score of low (46%) or very low (50%), indicating small and/or sparse patches where control is generally still feasible. This is similar to the numbers for 2017, when 99% of patches scored low or very low in PMI. Seventy-eight percent of tree patches were classified as seedlings or saplings, which require less effort to control than mature trees. Cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum) was the most common IEP recorded in transects, found in 30–77% of transects across the different routes. It was the only species found in transects on all monitoring routes. When treated and untreated extra areas near the West Entrance were compared, the treated area had comparable or higher lev-els of IEPs than the untreated area. When segments of monitoring routes conducted between 2003 and 2019 were compared, results were mixed, due to the different species monitored in different time periods. But in general, the number of IEPs per 100 meters is increasing or remaining constant over time. There were notable increases in IEP patches per 100 meters on several routes in 2019: field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) along East Glade Park Road; Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) in Red Canyon; yellow salsify along East Glade Park Road, No Thoroughfare Canyon, No Thoroughfare Trail, and Red Canyon; and yellow sweetclover in No Thoroughfare Canyon and Red Canyon. Network staff will return to re-sample monitoring routes in 2021.

As the main research and development organization for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) helps solve our nation’s most challenging problems. With seven laboratories under the ERDC umbrella, ERDC expertise spans a wide range of disciplines. This provides researchers an amazing network of collaborators both within labs and across them. Many of the publications produced by ERDC through the Information Technology Laboratory’s Information Science and Knowledge Management Branch (ISKM), the publishing authority for ERDC, are a testament to the power of these partnerships. Therefore, in this issue of The Forefront, we wanted to highlight some of those collaborations, across ERDC and beyond. Colored flags at the top of each page indicate the laboratories involved in each report (see the end of this issue for a full list of the laboratories and their lab colors), in addition to USACE red for district collaborators and gray for others.
