The purpose of this study is to describe (1) the availability of collections local content in increasing public information literacy about wisdom local at the Padang Panjang City Library and Archives Service; (2) obstacles in improving public information literacy about local wisdom in the Dinas Padang Panjang City Library and Archives; and (3) efforts in improving public information literacy about local wisdom in the Dinas Padang Panjang City Library and Archives. This research is a type of qualitative research with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques through observation, interview, and documentation. Research data was obtained from the results of an interview with the Head of the Library Service and Assistant Service Staff Padang Panjang City Library and Archives. The results of this study are as follows. First, in doing availability of local library collections pay attention to indicators availability of library collections including. (1) relevance, availability collection of local content in the library is relevant to the related user needs collection of local content; (2) user-oriented, collection availability local content in the library related to the information needs of users; (3) completeness of collections, completeness of local content collections in the library is still not complete because it only exists in printed form; (4) the ratio of titles, users and field specialist. The ratio between the titles of local content collections in the library and current users is still limited; (5) does not conflict with politics, ideology, religion or belief, race, or class. Availability of local content collection what is in the library does not conflict with politics, ideology, religion as well as existing races and groups; (6) scientific objects, collection availability local content in the library is adjusted to the vision and mission of the parent institution to achieve goals and objectives. Second, the City Library and Archives Service Padang Panjang has obstacles, namely: (1) lack of librarians functional in carrying out coaching activities; (2) users looking for local content collection is still very limited; (3) lack of active community participation. Third, the Padang Panjang City Library and Archives Service carried out several efforts to improve public information literacy about wisdom local Padang Panjang, namely: (1) holding traditional training activities; and (2) providing guidance to the Community Reading Park (TBM)

Indonesia is a compound country that has multi-ethnic, ethnic, religious, and multi-cultural that stretch from Sabang to Merauke and from Miangas to Rote. Therefore, the introduction of multiculturalism needs to be given early on to students through literary literacy in writing poems charged with multiculturalism. This study aims to describe a collection of children's poems by elementary school students “Keragaman Budaya Indonesia” and “Sehimpun Puisi. Resep Membuat Jagat Raya” from the perspective of multiculturalism. This research uses the principles of the qualitative research paradigm with the content analysis method. The data in this study are the values of multiculturalism in children's poetry. The source of the data in this study is a collection of poems by elementary school students. Data analysis techniques use interactive analysis techniques, namely data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results showed that in the poetry collection book there were fourteen indicators of multiculturalism, including respect for cultural equality, social class, ethnicity/ ethnicity, gender, language, religion, race, skin color, pluralism, equal rights, customs, behavior patterns, educational equality, and tolerance. The introduction of multiculturalism is used to teach students to respect each other and live in harmony and be free from prejudices of discrimination against religion, gender, race, culture, color, social class, educational equality, and student diversity.

From Ancient Greece to Hollywood, Medusa has been a global narrative. This article explores poetry and storytelling through the historical and literary legacy of Medusa; it argues for her importance in feminist history and her continued relevance in our post-MeToo world. While a seemingly straightforward tale, Medusa's story explores female dynamics, feminist power against patriarchal forces, and the ultimate defense against the male gaze. This paper showcases a historical account of the handling of the Medusa myth which proves that the rewriting and reclaiming of the myth by women parallels, if not contributes to the success of female empowerment. Accompanying this paper is a poetry collection that explores varying perspectives within rape culture, including the sexualization of Billie Eilish.

The themes explored in this issue of Language Arts challenge readers to consider how literacy development is influenced, shaped, and created by inequities related to race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. The books reviewed in this column investigate conditions of classroom inequities from different perspectives: curriculum, educators, and policy. The first book, Children’s Literature and Learning: Literary Study across the Curriculum, written by Barbara A. Lehman, examines how educators can address issues of diversity and inequities, both through curriculum and by the kinds of literature they bring in to the classroom. The second book, Building Racial and Cultural Competence in the Classroom: Strategies from Urban Educators, edited by Karen Manheim Teel and Jennifer E. Obidah, offers a collection of articles intended to give teachers and teacher educators strategies for building cultural competence in future educators. And finally, Translating Childhoods: Immigrant Youth, Language, and Culture, by Marjorie Faulstich Orellana, challenges our understanding of the sociology of childhood for children from diverse backgrounds, raising new implications for wide-reaching education policy.

In 1924 a half-Taiwanese, half-Japanese man travelled from Japan to Shanghai to study French at the Jesuit Université L'Aurore. He was young, flamboyant, and rich, and eventually used his own personal funds to found two bookstores and three journals in Shanghai. Despite his ambiguous national identity and lack of formal Chinese education, he also became the founder of a Chinese modernist literary movement called new sensationism (xinganjue pai), earned substantial notoriety, and attracted a host of followers. Murdered by an unidentified assassin in 1939, in his shorr life Liu Na'ou (1900–39) mirrored the literary movement that he created and that died with him. But this was not before he had published an intriguing collection of short stories entitled Scène (his own French title, 1930a), which was in some measure to define what urban writing meant for Chinese writers in Shanghai during the Nanjing decade (1927–37), as the quotation above suggests.

Riffing on Geoffrey Hartman's criticism in the wilderness, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., titled his introduction to the 1984 collection Black Literature and Literary Theory “Criticism in the Jungle.” Yale deconstruction, meet tropes of blackness. When a Gates-edited issue of Critical Inquiry (plus several additional essays) appeared two years later in book form as “Race,” Writing, and Difference, the encounter he helped broker between poststructuralist theory and race studies had its battle cry. Race was not an essence but an inscription, a signifier of instituted difference. The literature produced under its auspices was to be read as a series of marks and markers calling for complex formal analysis, not merely as an index of the humanity or condition of its writers. In retrospect, it appears that all this was a gambit in the embourgeoisement of African American literary studies. Twenty years on, Gates has started a company that does racial DNA searches—what he calls “roots in a test tube”—and produces books and television specials on black celebrities' racial genealogies (Lee B1). No scare quotes about it, race now gives you access to Oprah and her people. Call it criticism in the Vineyard.

Abstract This essay is a response to the eight essays collected under the title “Literature and Publishing, 1945–2020.” In this response, I consider the timing of such a collection: Why publishing now? Why should we be reimagining literary history through the lens of publishing at this particular moment? I suggest that we can only fully grapple with the relationship between literary studies and publishing in the present moment by attending to the relationship between literary studies and the university. In the midst of twin labor crises inflected and exacerbated by questions of race, class, and gender, we must recognize the parallel conditions of those working in publishing and those working in higher education. This project’s timely interest in the institutions that shape the contemporary literary field—publishers, agencies, distributors, prizes, etc.—comes as our toehold on our own institutions (that is, the endurance and relative autonomy of university literature departments) seems increasingly tenuous.

In 1989, I began collecting and populating my university campus office with items reflecting what I knew—from my research, teaching, and lived experience as a Black American—was racist Americana. These items have supplemented my teaching of African American literature and culture for over thirty years, invigorating discussions and breathing life into the texts we study. My collection challenges one of the most esteemed aspects of our profession—alphabet literacy through reading, writing, and books. Embodying past and present, these artifacts are as powerful as books. As my personal traveling library, they go into human spaces in ways books cannot, allowing and inviting viewers’ sensory experiences. Every piece is a story and elicits a range of personal stories, documenting intersectional perspectives on race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, religion, and body size. An exercise in cultural literacy, this collection disrupts mythologies created to restrict and delegitimize the lives of Black people. Challenging my university campus office visitors to confront the reality of me—a Black male faculty member at a predominantly white institution—my collection invites open conversation about race on my terms. My “colored museum” invites all who experience it to reflect on how we experience community building and new meaning making.

Eric Sundquist, Strangers in the Land: Blacks, Jews, Post-Holocaust America (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2005)As measured by that deadly but inescapable phrase “quantity and quality,” Eric Sundquist is perhaps the most productive American literature scholar of his generation. Since 1979, when he was still in his twenties, he has authored half a dozen books while editing another half-dozen. All have made an impact and many of these have been highly influential—his first book, Home as Found: Authority and Genealogy in Nineteenth-Century American Literature, was among the very first to read canonical American works through the lens of contemporary literary and psychoanalytic theory; his edited collection American Realism: New Essays (1982) proved pivotal in reviving the critical energy in a major but long-dormant literary and historical period. To Wake the Nations: Race in the Making of American Literature (1993) was by implicit design and to powerful effect nothing less than a rewriting of the foundational work of American literary history and criticism—F. O. Matthiessen's monumental American Renaissance: Art and Expression in the Age of Emerson and Whitman (1941). I will spend some time describing To Wake the Nations not only because of the book's exceptional importance but because its eloquent introduction provides the closest thing to a critical credo that Sundquist has written. His description there of his critical ideals—particularly of “justice,” boundary-crossing and “verification”—will help orient our approach to Strangers in the Land, which remains loyal to these ideals as it extends his interest in race and ethnicity, black and white, to the tormented subject of blacks and Jews, united by a “bond of alienation.” (52).

Twentieth-century American literature incorporates interracial and biracial themes that bring to light the often unnamed and unrecognized biracial identities of many Americans. Unfortunately, despite the potential value for a deeper understanding of the construction of race, these themes have seldom been seriously considered in the context of reevaluating the nature of the system that creates racial labels and categories until the recent emergence of postmodern critical theories. This thesis examines the black-white interracial themes and biracial protagonists in Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928) and Danzy Senna's Caucasia (1998) in order to explore the texts' representations of systems of hegemonic power that create racial labels and categories. I discuss the binary sociopolitical construction of race in the United States (black-white) and the complexity of biracial identities as a foundation for my examination of literary representations of biracial subjectivity, racial passing, primitive exoticism, and the intersections between race, class and gender. I conclude that a study of the interracial theme in literature is a dive into the chasm between margin and center, the enunciative split between the binary racial signifiers black and white. Therefore, representations of biracial subjectivity provide a unique vantage point for surveillance of the complexities of the human struggle to gain and maintain power.M.A.

This chapter sketches the beginnings of literary modernity in Senegal through an analysis of a remarkable nineteenth-century collection of textual artifacts.This collection includes a multilingual corpus of poetry, calligraphy, folktales, and songs, as well as the textual components of several leather-bound protective amulets that for centuries Europeans called “fetishes.” The collection was assembled by David Boilat, a mixed-race priest, who pasted his findings into the pages of a notebook before sending them to anthropologists in Paris. Boilat’s notebook reframes the residues of many different textual practices and performance genres as texts that can be quotable, transportable, and readable in new ways. This subsumes collected artifacts into a new textual order, founded on the principle of readability. Nearly a century later, a young Léopold Senghor would incorporate some of Boilat’s collections into an early anthology of African writing in French, thereby consecrating them as literature.

With heightened emphasis on critical literacy pedagogies, attention to critical literacy for young children (CLYC) has rapidly increased. Yet, there is a paucity of studies examining CLYC in bilingual settings, particularly in Pre-K contexts. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, the current study examined how early critical literacy can be implemented as a medium to help young bilinguals critique texts and develop critical perspectives about race and gender. The study was conducted in a kindergarten classroom at the Korean Language School in a Midwestern city in the US. The data were collected over a semester using multiple collection sources including audio/video recordings, observational field notes, interviews, and children's artifacts. Findings suggest the potential of early critical literacy practices in bilingual contexts to open critical conversations about race and gender with young children. The study also provides teachers with tips on how to create supportive literary environments for young bilingual children.

Accurate measurement of digital divides is important for policy purposes. Empirical studies of broadband subscription gaps have largely used cross-sectional data, which cannot speak to the timing of technological adoption. Yet, the dynamics of a digital divide are important and deserve study. With the goal of improving our understanding of appropriate techniques for analyzing digital divides, we review econometric methodology and propose the use of duration analysis. We compare the performance of alternative estimation methods using a large dataset on DSL subscription in the U.S., paying particular attention to whether women, blacks, and Hispanics catch up to others in the broadband adoption race. We conclude that duration analysis best captures the dynamics of the broadband gaps and is a useful addition to the analytic tool box of digital divide researchers. Our results support the official collection of broadband statistics in panel form, where the same households are followed over time.

Abstract The chapter explores how the Alexandrian learned poets worked mythography into poetic form. This cultural and aesthetic trend is exemplified by catalog poems with mythological content, usually arranged around a common theme (e.g., metamorphosis, catasterism, or love). Mythography, stemming from archaic and classical poetic and prose sources, found its way into Alexandrian poetry in various ways. The emblematic Aetia by Callimachus, the blending of mythological cycles in Apollonius’s Argonautica, and the mythological enigmas in Lycophron’s Alexandra clearly reflect the aesthetics of collecting and rewriting rare, curious, or obscure stories as avant-garde poetry. Historical and literary sources exploited by the scholar-poets, principles of collection and arrangement, the authority of the collector-narrator, the fragmentation of mythological narratives and the aesthetics of mythography in poetic form are among the issues addressed.

By now critics have clearly recognized the ways in which foundational Gothic texts are rife with discourses and debates on racial otherness. Critical studies have especially revealed the conjunction of racial otherness and monstrosity in British and American Gothic Literature. However, as Toni Morrison explains in her seminal collection Playing in the Dark, the appearance of such monstrous racial others in literary texts is rarely about the actuality of the racial minority, but rather about white anxiety and self-construction. Extending that observation, this essay specifically examines how Black Gothic writers have understood and critiqued Gothic theorizations of race as participants in larger discourses which produce an uncanny whiteness. This essay even shows the ways Black Gothic writers have variously sought to re-appropriate and alter - and thereby re-theorize -- the meaning and uses of monstrosity in relation to race.

Abstract Sterling Brown’s own critical distinction between the term “Harlem Renaissance,” which he dismisses as strictly box office, and the term “New Negro Renaissance,” which describes a literary moment with which Brown identifies, is not just a question of semantics or geographical accuracy. It is in fact a distinction between the values derived from a nationalism embodied in his 1932 collection of poetry Southern Road and similar to that which produced the Irish language Gaelic League and those of the allegedly transnational values of modernism. In making this distinction, Brown accepts the premise of Eliot and Pound—and of the Comintern for that matter, at least so far as life under modern capitalism was concerned—that modern urban life is afflicted by a sickness of the spirit caused to a large extent by rampant individualism and the breakup of social and moral consensus; in fact, this spiritual malaise is in Brown’s view perhaps more intense for African Americans in the northern urban centers than for other Americans.

The chapter surveys the evidence for ancient Egyptian libraries during the period 1600–800 BCE. It looks at both private and institutional libraries, defined as collections of papyri with literary texts, with a notable focus on archaeological context, and the use and materiality of manuscripts. Given the paucity of archaeological remains of temple and palace libraries, many indirect sources play a key role in the analysis, including book labels, administrative titles, and patterns of transmission for literary texts. Private libraries are better attested, and here the main groups are described with a particular focus on their importance for reconstructing the circulation and reception of literature. Finally, the chapter includes a rare case study where an historical individual and his family can be identified as the owners of a private library.

This chapter focuses on the literary collection Al-Hafawāt al-Nādira (The rare slips), composed by the fifth/eleventh-century Baghdadi scholar Ghars al-Niʿma b. Hilāl al-Ṣābiʾ. Pomerantz shows how these verbal errors—slips of the tongue—became part of the entertainment record of the Abbasid court. He argues that Ṣābiʾ’s attention to the verbal errors at court can be productively compared to Freud’s famed inquiries into the question of lapsus linguae in his Psychopathology of Everyday Life.

These recollections paint a portrait of the prominent scholar from the author’s memory. They describe not only an outstanding philologist but also an interesting and exceptional human being. In particular, they recount Mann’s participation in a number of literary projects, including collections of articles about Belinsky (“True Knight of the Spirit”, 2013) and Gogol (“‘Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends’: N. Gogol’s Book in the Mirror of Russian Social Thought of the 19th–21st Centuries”, 2021). The author also discusses Mann’s contribution to the debate of transferring the Moscow monument to the great writer that took place on the occasion of Gogol’s anniversary. She notes Y. Mann’s rare combination of scholarly and literary talents as well as describing some features of his character and details of his biography. Finally, she proposes perpetuating the memory of the prominent scholar by installing a memorial plaque on the house in Moscow where Mann lived.

This poster looks at the circulation rate for literary primary texts, which constitute a unique area of collecting in academic libraries: while they do not in most cases meet immediate research needs, it is assumed that libraries ought to acquire them, for reasons including future research needs, preservation of the cultural record, and the ability of members of the intellectual community to stay current, those these remain primarily tacit. The circulation trends of contemporary literary works in ten areas of literature (English, American, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin American, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian) over the past twenty years at the University of Oregon Knight Library are presented and the circulation turnover rate (CTR), for each of these subject areas are presented. Sample graphs allow for the comparison of circulation rates and numbers of books across time, and serve as examples of the utility of such visualizations of the numbers. The key question raised by the study is what makes a good CTR for a particular region of the collection? The poster concludes by summarizing the considerations that bear on the interpretation of the CTR as an index of how the collection is “working.”

The digital edition of the József Kiss correspondence is a pilot project of the Centre for Digital Humanities, Petőfi Literary Museum. In addition to the processing of the personal and professional letters of the 19th-century writer, poet, and editor of the literary journal A Hét (The Week), the project is to explore the possibilities offered by the Transkribus software. Handwritten Text Recognition is an emerging field of the digital humanities. The paper will discuss this artificial intelligence-based technology and our experiences in creating a Hungarian model. The best result has a 6,94% character error rate. Apart from the practical experience gained in testing, the paper discusses the possibilities of implementing HTR in public collections.

Introduction: The human body is a structure composed of billions of specialized cells, each activity goes through the control of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Neuroinfections are pathologies that affect the CNS, for example, we have Murcomycosis, a progressive infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the order Mucorales, with high frequency in Immunodepressed patients, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the main underlying pathology associated with the development of Rhinocerebral Murcomycosis, which represents 50% of the cases, with a mortality rate of 70% (Sidrim, 2012, p.168). Objective: To highlight the main symptoms associated with Murcomycosis and Diabetes Mellitus. Methodology: Literary review of the Scielo, Shola.google PubMed and library collections, from 2012 to 2021, with the descriptors: Mycosis, Diabetes mellitus and Central Nervous System. Results: It was evidenced that 90% of the diagnosed cases refer to patients with a high degree of immunodepression, mainly due to DM, the main symptoms include unilateral facial pain, headache and fever, frequently resulting in necrosis of the paranasal sinuses. Conclusion: Considering the findings of Murcumicosis associated with DM, it becomes essential to apply informative strategies regarding healthy eating and physical habits, protected by an efficient policy aimed at reducing the incidence of the disease as a basis, the diagnosis of Murcomycosis can be reduced.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that older adults (aged 60+ years) living in areas of greater social vulnerability were most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Belo Horizonte between February and October 2020. METHODS: We conducted an ecological study with analysis of mortality rates by census tracts, classified as areas of low vulnerability (1330 tracts), medium vulnerability (1460 tracts), and high/very high vulnerability (1040 tracts) according to the health vulnerability index (consisting of indicators of sanitation, garbage collection, water supply, literacy level, and race). The number of deaths from COVID-19 was obtained from the Mortality Information System from 10th to 43rd epidemiological week. The rates were age-standardized for populations of the three areas of vulnerability, based on population estimates from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. RESULTS: In Belo Horizonte, the mortality rate was 62.9 deaths per 100,000 population, ranging from 36.1 in areas of low social vulnerability to 76.6 and 101.9 in areas of medium and high/very high vulnerability, respectively. The mortality rate was 292.3 per 100,000 older persons, increasing from 179.2 in areas of low vulnerability to 353.6 and 472.6 in areas of medium and high/very high vulnerability, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In this moment of organizing vaccination sessions for the population, social inequalities in mortality, even in the age group at highest risk, reinforce the principle of starting vaccination by prioritizing the most socially vulnerable areas. It is necessary to prioritize the most exposed older persons, as they usually live with on-site workers, have greater difficulty in complying with social distancing orders and with the hygiene preventive measures due to poor housing and transportation conditions, and experience limited access to health care services.

In the field of healthcare design, a great revolution is taking place. The use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and in particular the great success of smartwatches, fit bands, and specific wearable medical devices allowed people to self-monitor their health parameters. At the same time, physicians were allowed to track, assist, make diagnoses, and prescribe treatments, remotely. Everything is done with the collection of and analysis of high-quality data, assisted by Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Forgan; 2021; Chiapponi & Ciotti, 2015; Islam et. al, 2015). At the same time, the easier accessibility to sensory technology, the high-speed internet connection, and rate of adoption of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), which are altogether known as eXtended Reality (XR), is accelerating innovations, with the digital experiences expected to become even more immersive.According to a recent report of Sony Ericsson® the biggest trend for future technology developments until 2030, will be the evolution from IoT (Internet of things) to IoS (Internet of Senses). Nowadays, we can use XR solutions to support patients’ recovery, promote mental health, or treat chronic pain conditions, but, digital communications are still audio-visual. In the next decade, it is expected that devices, sensors, and actuators, and software would enable these experiences to become even richer, through the concomitant use of all our senses, and merging the digital and the physical reality. This type of experience is based on the Internet of Senses.This revolution will drive designers to create more immersive environments. Future experiences with the diffuse use of haptic feedback will be enriched with digital flavors/aromas, more sophisticated haptic stimulations, and immersive interfaces. Future experiences are going to involve multiple sensory modalities, opening interesting possibilities for multi-sensory and cross-sensory interactions. (Sony Ericsson, 2020)These observations are particularly interesting for the field of Synesthetic Design, («synaesthesia» from the Greek syn," together", and aisthēsis, "sensation", literarily “perceiving together”), the study of sensory perception is used to design sensory stimuli with the specific purpose of “contaminating” other different sensory modalities (senses) changing the nature of stimuli. All the sensations can be coordinated based on the systematic connections between different modalities”. (Haverkamp, 2014). How this revolution is going to affect the world of healthcare?The Internet of Senses revolution will open important horizons for designers, responsible for the sensory characterization of everyday experiences. In this paper, we are going to introduce what are the opportunities of implementing Internet of Senses technologies for healthcare. To do so, we are going to present and discuss a Case-Study (a between-subjects experience involving 42 participants) in which a synesthetic design approach has been used to reduce the sensation of pain in people (using cold-induced pain CPT). The study has been realized creating an immersive experience based on cross-sensory interactions in a sensory-controlled environment. Particular attention will be given to the methodological aspects of the study.
