Abstract During the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany, the Dutch literary field was drastically restructured and politicized. Immediately after the liberation, efforts were made to rebuild the field. The first step that was made in the reconstruction, was to purge the field of collaborators. This purge was carried out by the Board of Honour for the Letters and the Central Board of Honour for the Arts. This article investigates just how these Boards contributed to the reconstruction of a(n) (relatively) autonomous literary field in the Netherlands. In doing so, it takes recourse to historical sociological theories regarding the legal and deontological responsibility of the writer.

Deze bijdrage bespreekt aan de hand van een aantal recente publicaties drie thema's uit het actuele theoretisch debat rond nationalisme: de moderniteit van naties en nationalisme, nationale identiteit en de comparatieve methode. Over het eerste verscheen een boek dat een nieuwe, op historische bronnen gebaseerde, start voor de studie van het nationalisme wil betekenen, tegen het modernistisch paradigma in. Volgens auteur Caspar Hirschi ligt de oorsprong van nationalisme in de late Middeleeuwen, vroege vormen van nationalisme kwamen reeds tijdens de Renaissance voor en modern nationalisme kon enkel dergelijke mobiliserende kracht verwerven omdat het reeds lang aanwezig was in politiek, geleerdheid en kunst. Niet de aantrekkingskracht voor de massa was belangrijk, maar wel de nabijheid van de nationalisten tot de macht. Het identiteitsdebat wordt steeds meer gevoerd, maatschappelijk maar ook in verschillende wetenschappelijke disciplines. Zoals in de discursieve benadering door Ludo Beheydt van de culturele identiteit van de Nederlanden langs taal en kunst, of in de verzamelbundel rond de spanningsrelatie met het internationale en het lokale bij de nationale legitimering in België en Nederland tijdens de 19de eeuw, bij literatuur- en taalbeschouwing, de geschiedschrijving en de productie van 'eigen' literatuur. Ten slotte passeren enkele bijdragen rond de methodologie voor de vergelijkende studie van het nationalisme alsmede enkele recente toepassingen de revue.___________ "Yet another book on nationalism". Some recent contributions to the generation of theories This contribution discusses three themes from the current theoretical debate about nationalism on the basis of a number of recent publications: the modernity of nations and nationalism, national identity and the comparative method. In reference to the first theme, a book was published that hopes to provide a new beginning for the study of nationalism, based on historical sources, and contrary to the modernist paradigm. According to the author Caspar Hirschi, the origin of nationalism dates from the late Middle Ages. Early forms of nationalism already existed during the Renaissance whilst modern nationalism was only able to acquire such a mobilising power because it had been present for such a long time in politics, erudition and art. What was important was not its attractiveness for the masses, but the nationalists’ proximity to power. The identity debate is taking place more and more frequently, in society as well as in several scientific disciplines. For instance, it is found in Ludo Beheydt’s discursive approach to the cultural identity of the Netherlands via language and art, or in the collected works about the field of tension between the international and local level for the national legitimation in Belgium and the Netherlands during the 19th century, in debates about literature and language, the historiography and the production of the ‘own’ literature. Finally, some contributions are reviewed about the methodology for the comparative study of nationalism as well as some recent applications thereof.

On Saturday, February 5th, 2011, the Dutch Performing Arts Medicine Association (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Dans- en MuziekGeneeskunde, NVDMG) organized a Symposium for and by allied health care professionals, held in the Medisch Centrum Haaglanden (MCH, Medical Centre of The Hague). Allied health care professionals, such as physiotherapists, manual therapists, Mensendieck therapists, speech therapists, and foot therapists, form a vital and indispensable link in the chain of healthcare and cure for dancers, musicians, and singers. The intention of the symposium was to highlight the practical and experience-related approach of allied health care providers, both in the presentations and in the artistic intermezzi. Apart from the exchange of knowledge and experience, there was ample opportunity for informal contact, facilitating and stimulating the formation of an interdependent network of allied health care providers specialized and/or interested in dance, music, and singing in The Netherlands.

Abstract: Textiles, Trade & Taste: Portugal and the World (TTT) is a project that aspires to bring new synergies to the field of textile studies by promoting different connections and interdisciplinary approaches involving art history, materials science, and conservation. The TTT research network is based at the Center for Humanities in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and organizes workshops, conferences, tours, and lectures in museums and research institutions. The network’s artistic and historical research has ranged from collating archival material to stylistic and iconographic studies, with the aim of placing textile objects in their historical, artistic, technological, and sociocultural contexts. Chemical analysis and characterization of dyes, textile fibers, and precious metal threads have provided important evidence for identifying the origins of raw materials and finished textiles, and for developing improved conservation treatments for their preservation for future generations. Recent research has examined the global circulation of dyes in the early modern period, especially reds, and also reconstructed the production and consumption of Indian, Chinese, and Portuguese embroideries and Islamic carpets. In 2011, TTT’s work led to the classification of three “Salting” carpets as national treasures in Portugal. The team members have collaborated with national and international museums, including Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (Lisbon), as well as Abegg-Stiftung (Riggisberg), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Musée des Tissus, (Lyon), Museum für Islamische Kunst (Berlin), Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK) (Vienna), Rietberg Museum (Zürich), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum (Washington, D.C.), National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), and Victoria and Albert Museum (London). The team’s art historians contributed to the platform “Museum With No Frontiers” to develop the online exhibition Discover Carpet Art involving Portuguese museums. TTT’s scientists have strong links with the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (National Museum of Asian Art, Washington, D.C.), University of Zaragoza (Spain), Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, Amersfoort), and the University of Amsterdam. We have been encouraged by the positive response of the international community to the results of our initial research projects.

Samenvatting In februari 2005 publiceerde de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (wrr) zijn rapport Focus op functies. Uitdagingen voor een toekomstbestendig mediabeleid. Hierin adviseert de wrr om de beleidsvisie van de overheid op het medialandschap radicaal te wijzigen. De huidige zienswijze, waarin beleid per medium en per infrastructuur wordt beredeneerd, zou vervangen moeten worden door een visie waarin de functies van het medialandschap als geheel centraal staan.

AbstractThe present article, dedicated to Prof. J.Th. De Smidt on the occasion of his 80th birthday, discusses the case of Jacques du Gal, a French merchant, and the Netherlands privateers Claes de Doot and Meeus Pietersz from Flushing. The former departed from the harbour of Dieppe in France with one vessel, headed for Scotland. During this journey, on the open seas, Du Gal bought an English ship, denoted in the records as the Mary Dertenny. This ship had been taken by the Scottish privateers Jehan Edinestone and Jehan Gourlat. Near the Scottish coast, the ships of Du Gal were boarded by De Doot and Pietersz. After the latter had returned with their prizes to their harbour of origin, Flushing in the Low Countries, the Admiralty Court of Veere took jurisdiction of the case. It decided that Du Gal's own ship should be returned to him, but it declared that the Mary Dertenny was good prize. On appeal, however, the Great Council of Malines, the then supreme court of the Low Countries, ruled that De Doot and Pietersz should also return the Mary Dertenny to Du Gal. The case of Du Gal v. De Doot and Pietersz is of interest, not only because it contains detailed information on the costs and the procedural steps to be taken before the Admiralty Court in a prize case, but also because it proves that, apart from legal arguments, diplomatic considerations may have been of importance when deciding prize cases before courts of law.
