ABSTRACT Background: Epilepsy is the commonest neurological disorder encountered in Sub-Saharan Africa. The quality of life of patients with epilepsy (PWEs) is adversely affected by cognitive impairments. Aim: This study investigated the prevalence and pattern of cognitive impairments in PWE in Ukpo community located in a South-Eastern state in Nigeria using Community Screening Interview for Dementia (CSID) and a computer-assisted cognitive test battery (FePsy). Methods and Patients: Fifty-one PWEs were studied and compared with 51 age-, sex-and level of education-matched healthy controls. Diagnosis of epilepsy was confirmed clinically with eye-witness corroboration. Sociodemographic data and information on epilepsy variables were obtained with the aid of a questionnaire. Cognitive domains assessed include language, memory, orientation, attention, psychomotor speed and constructional praxis. Results: The prevalence rate of cognitive impairment using total CSID score was 19.6%. Analysis of CSID scores revealed significant impairment in language (17.6%), memory (29.4%), orientation (15.7%), attention (7.8%) and constructional praxis (15.7%) compared to healthy controls. A similar pattern was observed with FePsy but with better sensitivity indices for detecting cognitive impairment. Conclusion: This study indicated significant prevalence rate of cognitive impairment among treatment-naïve PWE with profound affectation of memory, mental speed and language. In addition, the FePsy was found to be more sensitive and specific in assessment of cognitive function in PWE.

AbstractImpregnation of wood with paraffin wax emulsion (PWE) is a common eco-friendly approach for improving water repellency. In this study, loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvesteris) samples were impregnated with PWEs with different solid contents and particle sizes, and the influence of the impregnation parameters on wax penetration and distribution in treated wood was elucidated by time domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR). A good linear correlation (R2=0.981) between wax content determined by TD-NMR and weight percent gain (WPG) of the impregnated wood was established. According to wax loading and distribution data, loblolly pine has a much better permeability than Scots pine. With decreasing solid content and particle size, the penetration of PWE increases in both species. The water contact angles (CA) on the surface at different depths of wood were also determined, and the CA results were consistent with the wax distribution found by the TD-NMR analysis.

Background and Objective. Provocative factors are one causative factor of seizure attacks in persons with epilepsy (PWE). There are limited data of prevalence and major provocative factors in Asian populations.Methods. This study was performed at the Epilepsy Clinic, Khon Kaen University Hospital. The patients who aged 15 years or over, who had been treated at least 3 months with at least one antiepileptic drug, and who were followed up for at least one year were included. Data of seizure control and triggers were collected retrospectively from medical records. Data analysis was performed to identify independent provocative factors.Results. A total of 382 PWE met the study criteria. The mean age was40.4±0.8years. Approximately 44% of the patients had at least one provocative factor. By multivariate analysis, the independent provocative factors with the first three highest adjusted odds ratios were sleep deprivation (adjustedOR=8.64, 95% CI 3.73–19.99), alcohol consumption (adjustedOR=6.76, 95% CI 1.44–31.78), and feeling stressful (adjustedOR=2.97, 95% CI 1.29–6.86).Conclusion. Almost half of seizure attacks may be caused by provocative factors in Thai PWEs and some factors may be preventable. Avoidance of these factors should be emphasized to epilepsy patients for improving clinical outcomes and quality of life.

ABSTRACT Memory complaints are common in adult people with epilepsy (PWEs). However, the associated clinical aspects are not yet fully understood. Objective: This study aims to relate the occurrence of memory complaints in PWEs with clinical aspects and self-esteem. Methods: To relate the data obtained from the Memory Complaint Questionnaire (MAC-Q) with clinical aspects, 71 PWEs were assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Brief Cognitive Battery-Edu. These data were compared with 55 individuals in a control group (CG). Results: Memory complaints (MAC-Q≥25) were significantly higher in PWEs, when compared with individuals in the CG [35 (49.3%) vs. 15 (27.2%); Student’s t-test; p=0.012]. Objective cognitive performance was lower in PWEs. Memory complaints were associated with a lower educational level, the presence of depression, SES, MMSE, incidental memory, and the clock-drawing test scores in PWEs. Conclusions: Memory complaints were more frequent in PWEs than in individuals in the CG, and there was a relationship with cognitive deficit, educational level, depression, and low self-esteem.

To examine the relationship between the Protestant work ethic (PWE) and the need for cognition (NFC), 210 Americans completed the Mirels and Garrett (1971) PWE scale and the Cacioppo, Petty, and Kao (1984) NFC scale. Although there was no relationship between the composite PWE scale and NFC, there were relationships between two of three PWE factors and NFC. Specifically, correlational analyses revealed that the PWE factor of hard work as a means to success was negatively related to NFC, whereas the PWE factor of antileisure was positively related to NFC. Results are discussed with respect to the multidimensional structure of various PWE measures. Issues concerning the multifaceted nature of the PWE and future research directions are also considered.

An experimental investigation on the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of single cylinder water cooled diesel test engine was carried out at a constant speed of 1500 rpm with processed waste engine oil. The experiments were carried out at different load conditions from no load to 110% load. To compare the results obtained the baseline readings were taken with diesel. The standard operating condition of the engine was 200 bar injection pressure and 23° before Top Dead Center (bTDC). For processed Waste Engine Oil (pWEO) fuel operation the Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) obtained at rated load point was 32.18 %. at 100 % load and pWEO gave a peak pressure of 64.46 bar compared to 66.12 bar for diesel. There was a 5 % reduction in the Nitrous Oxide (NO) emission with pWEO. Heat release rate (HRR) and exhaust gas temperature showed considerable reduction with pWEO fuel operation.

This research aimed to analyze the moderating effect that Protestant work ethics (PWE) have on the relationship between human resources practices (HRP) and (a) work engagement (WE) and (b) organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). The sample consisted of 299 participants. The results revealed that PWE moderates the relationship between HRP and WE and OCB through five dimensions. The dimensions of PWE-leisure and PWE-centrality of work are moderators between the HRP and the WE. The dimensions of PWE-morality–ethics, PWE-wasted time, PWE-delay of gratification, and PWE-leisure moderate the relationship between HRP and OCB. The analysis offers additional evidence to existing literature in understanding how human resources practices facilitate the development of work engagement and citizenship behaviors. The workers’ values play an essential role here to strengthen that relationship and mitigate its harmful effects.

ABSTRACT Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing can have adverse impacts on adult people with epilepsy (PWE). Objective: To investigate the seizure frequency, the perceived well-being, and the presence of anxiety symptoms in PWE during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods: Data from a questionnaire on the repercussions of COVID-19 were analyzed in relation to the clinical variables of 114 PWE, with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: There were 26 cases of COVID-19 in PWE and/or family members (22.8%). During the pandemic period, 11 PWE (9.6%) reported an increase in seizures, but unrelated to COVID-19. Also, the number of crises in PWE with previous depressive disorders increased, with differences between epilepsies. Symptoms of depression, impaired well-being, and concern for their lifestyle were significant in PWE with a previous diagnosis of depression. Impaired well-being, increased anxiety, nervousness, and tiredness, and the concern with being infected were mentioned by a high number of PWE in the pandemic. Conclusion: Seizure frequency increased during the pandemic period, a finding associated with clinical variables of epilepsy. PWE with depression had worse perceived well-being. Changes in well-being and increased anxiety and nervousness were frequent in the pandemic.

Current temporal high-order finite-difference (FD) stencils are mainly designed for isotropic wave equations, which cannot be directly extended to pseudoacoustic wave equations (PWEs) in tilted transversely isotropic (TTI) media. Moreover, it is difficult to obtain the time-space domain FD coefficients for anisotropic PWEs based on nonlinear dispersion relations in which anisotropy parameters are coupled with FD coefficients. Therefore, a second-order FD for temporal derivatives and a high-order FD for spatial derivatives are commonly used to discretize PWEs in TTI media. To improve the temporal and spatial modeling accuracy further, we have developed several effective FD schemes for modeling PWEs in TTI media. Through combining the [Formula: see text] (wavenumber)-space operators with the conventional implicit FD stencils (i.e., regular-grid [RG], staggered-grid [SG], and rotated SG [RSG]), we establish novel dispersion relations and determine FD coefficients using least-squares (LS). Based on [Formula: see text]-space operator compensation, we adopt the modified LS-based implicit RG-FD, implicit SG-FD, and implicit RSG-FD methods to respectively solve the second- and first-order PWEs in TTI media. Dispersion analyses indicate that the modified implicit FD schemes based on [Formula: see text]-space operator compensation can greatly increase the numerical accuracy at large wavenumbers. Modeling examples in TTI media demonstrate that the proposed FD schemes can adopt a short FD operator to simultaneously achieve high temporal and spatial modeling accuracy, thus significantly improve the computational efficiency compared with the conventional methods.

У даній роботі розглядається транспортна мережа як невід’ємна частина телекомунікаційної системи, аналізуються технічні принципи функціювання мереж MPLS, проводиться огляд основних технічних принципів транспортних мереж MPLS TP та їх відмінностей від принципів MPLS, аналізується питання моніторингу і керування мережами MPLS TP та питання щодо напрямку подальшого розвитку мереж MPLS TP, зокрема, переходу до технології GMPLS.
The purpose of the work is to study transport networks based on MPLS technology. Analysis of directions of MPLS technology adaptation to achieve compliance with the requirements of transport networks. This paper considers transport network as an integral part of telecommunication system, analyzes technical principles of MPLS networks operation, reviews main technical principles of MPLS TP transport networks and their differences from MPLS principles, analyzes the issue of monitoring and management of MPLS TP networks and the direction of further development of MPLS TP networks, in particular, the transition to GMPLS technology.

La cartographie participative est l’une des multiples disciplines de la géomatique. Elle a débuté dans les années 1980 afin d’aider les populations locales des pays du Sud à développer leur territoire. C’est en Nouvelle-Calédonie, dans la tribu de Wan Pwec que nous allons voir les intérêts, d’un tel processus de cartographie participative. Il est important de souligner que ce n’est pas pour développer son territoire que cette discipline est utilisée, mais plutôt pour montrer et démontrer les logiques traditionnelles de gestion de la terre existant dans les tribus kanak : logiques traditionnelles basées sur un savoir transmis de génération en génération de façon orale. C’est sur les terres coutumières de la tribu de Wan Pwec, que nous allons voir comment la vision mentale possédée par les chefs de familles et le chef de clan administre et gère les terres familiales. C’est dans une société kanak caractérisée par une forte tradition orale et n’ayant connu aucun support papier pour conserver et archiver ses connaissances que ce mémoire s’incorpore. À l’aide de la géomatique, d’une étude de cas sur le terrain et d’autres disciplines (comme l’anthropologie, le droit, l’histoire, la géographie, etc.), ce mémoire propose les résultats de ses travaux sur le savoir traditionnel du foncier coutumier.
Participatory mapping is one of multiple disciplines of geomatics. This started in the 1980s in order to help local populations of the southern hemisphere to develop their territory. It is in New Caledonia, in the tribe of Wan Pwec that we will consider the relevance of participatory mapping. It is important to note that, participatory mapping is not used to develop their own territory, but rather to explain and demonstrate the traditional land management logics that exist amongst the kanak tribes. The traditional logics are knowledge-based passed on orally from one generation to the next. On the customary lands of the tribe of Wan Pwec, we will see how the « chefs de familles » and the « chef de clan » administer and manage family lands. This Master Thesis is related to the kanak society characterized by a strong oral tradition and without any paper base to conserve and archive its knowledge. Using geomatics sciences, a case study and other disciplines (such as anthropology, law, history, geography…), this Master Thesis proposes the results of its research on traditional knowledge of customary land.

Les travaux de thèse reposent sur l'étude et le développement des structures photoniques sur niobate de lithium pour des applications capteurs de gaz. L'originalité du travail est d'étudier l'effet de l'absorption des couches de porphyrines spécifiques à la détection du benzène et déposées sur le cristal photonique sur la réponse spectrale de ce dernier. En premier lieu, une étude théorique par des méthodes numériques, maîtrisées au laboratoire d'optique (FDTD, PWE), était nécessaire pour étudier l'effet de la présence de certains gaz sur la réponse spectrale des cristaux photoniques. Nous avons montré qu'avec la structure choisie, une variation de la transmission de 23 % est obtenue lorsque le système est exposé à 50 ppm de benzène. La sensibilité de la structure au benzène est estimée à 2.3 ppm. En second lieu, nous avons étudié des réalisations en salle blanche des structures photoniques. En utilisant la méthode de gravure directe par faisceau d'ions focalisé (FIB), on a réalisé plusieurs cavités photoniques sur des guides d'ondes optiques fabriqués en collaboration avec Photline Technologies. Un banc de caractérisation automatisé (interface GPIB) en réflexion et en transmission est monté pour vérifier les prédictions théoriques. En plus, des études théoriques et expérimentales en champ proche optique ont été réalisées pour mettre en évidence la résonance des cavités gravées sur niobate de lithium. Ainsi, ces études expérimentales sont les premières sur ce type de matériau.

As one of the major building blocks in a wireless receiver, the Analog-to-Digital Interface (ADI) provides link and transition between the analog Radio Frequency (RF) frontend and the baseband Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module. The rapid development of the radio technologies raises new design challenges for the receiver ADI implementation. Requirements, such as power consumption optimization, multi-standard compatibility, fast settling capability and wide signal bandwidth capacity, are often encountered in a low voltage ADI design environment. Previous research offers ADI design schemes that emphasize individual merit. A systematic ADI design methodology is, however, not suffciently studied. In this work, the ADI design for two receiver systems are employed as research vehicles to provide solutions for different ADI design issues. A zero-crossing demodulator ADI is designed in the 0.35µm CMOS technology for the Bluetooth receiver to provide fast settling. Architectural level modification improves the process variation and the Local Oscillation (LO) frequency offset immunity of the demodulator. A 16.2dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at 0.1% Bit Error Rate (BER) is achieved with less than 9mW power dissipation in the lab measurement. For ADI in the 802.11b/Bluetooth dual-mode receiver, a configurable time-interleaved pipeline Analog-to-Digital-Converter (ADC) structure is adopted to provide the required multi-standard compatibility. An online digital calibration scheme is also proposed to compensate process variation and mismatching. The prototype chip is fabricated in the 0.25µm BiCMOS technology. Experimentally, an SNR of 60dB and 64dB are obtained under the 802.11b and Bluetooth receiving modes, respectively. The power consumption of the ADI is 20.2mW under the 802.11b receiving mode and 14.8mW under the Bluetooth mode. In this dissertation, each step of the receiver ADI design procedure, from system level optimization to the transistor level implementation and lab measurement, is illustrated in detail. The observations are carefully studied to provide insight on receiver ADI design issues. The ADI design for the Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) receiver is also studied at system level. Potential ADI structure is proposed to satisfy the wide signal bandwidth and high speed requirement for future applications.

Epilepsy is the most common, chronic, serious neurological disease in the world, with an estimated 65 million people affected worldwide. Recent studies on people diagnosed with epilepsy suggest that stress might trigger epileptic seizures. Interventions aimed at lowering stress might be able to reduce the risk for epileptic seizures among epileptics. In an attempt to explore this possibility, I conducted a systematic review addressing the efficacy of behavioral interventions targeted at lowering stress on seizure frequency among an epileptic population. This article also investigated the efficacy of these interventions on lowering self-perceived stress in the same population. Three databases were searched for obtaining 54 references. After a systematic filtering process, a set of 2 studies was retained after the full search procedure. The results suggest stress-reducing behavioral interventions do not have any statistically significant effects on lowering seizure frequency but have a statistically significant effect on lowering self-perceived stress ratings among an epileptic population. The small but promising results from trials and systematic reviews not included in this review warrant further research into the topic. Limitations regarding search procedure included studies and consideration for further research and reading for the presented topics are discussed.

Este trabalho propõe uma abordagem que utiliza uma combinação de métodos baseados na função barreira logarítmica e barreira logarítmica modificada para a resolução do problema de Fluxo de Potência Ótimo Reativo. Na abordagem proposta as restrições de desigualdade são transformadas em igualdade introduzindo as variáveis de folga, as quais são tratadas pela função barreira logarítmica ou pela função barreira logarítmica modificada e as restrições de igualdade são tratadas pelos multiplicadores de Lagrange. Estes métodos são utilizados em duas etapas. Inicialmente aplica-se o método baseado na função barreira logarítmica até que um critério de transição seja satisfeita. Depois aplica-se o método baseado na função barreira logarítmica modificada até que a condição de convergência seja satisfeita. Testes numéricos utilizando os sistemas elétricos de 3 barras e IEEE 14, 30, 57 e 118 barras indicam que o método é eficiente na resolução do problema Fluxo de Potência Ótimo Reativo. Uma comparação dos resultados obtidos pela abordagem proposta com os dos métodos de barreira logarítmica e de barreira logarítmica modificada separadamente é realizada.
This work proposes an approach that uses a combination of methods based on loga-rithmic barrier function and modi˝ed logarithmic barrier function for the resolution of the reactive optimal power ˛ow problem. In this proposed approach the inequality cons-traints are transformed into equalities by adding the slack variables, which are handled by logarithmic barrier function or modified logarithmic barrier function, and the equality constraints are handled by means of Lagrange multipliers. These methods are used in two steps. Initially, the method based on the logarithmic barrier function is applied until the stop condition is satisfied. After the method based on modified logarithmic barrier function is used until the convergence condition is satisfied. Numerical tests carried out with the 3 bus, IEEE 14, 30, 57 and 118 bus electrical systems indicate that the proposed approach is efficient in the resolution of the reactive optimal power flow problem. The results obtained by the proposed approach were compared with the logarithmic barrier method and the logarithmic barrier method modified, separately.

Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous nous sommes intéressés d'abord au mécanisme de résonance locale en développant différents modèles théoriques pour l'étude de nouveaux cristaux phononiques à résonance locale (CPRL) en plaque dont l'élément principal et l'élastomère (silicone rubber). Le mode opératoire de ce mécanisme a été étudié et les ouvertures des bandes interdites ont été interprétées théoriquement ainsi que les phénomènes physiques mis en jeu. La mise en évidence expérimentale de la bande interdite a été réalisée par la fabrication et la caractérisation de structures CPRL et une parfaite concordance a été constatée entre les résultats théoriques et expérimentaux. Une étude des phénomènes de guidage a permis par ailleurs de montrer la possibilité du confinement et de la transmission d'un seul mode élastique au niveau d'un CPRL. Dans un second temps, nous avons montré que les propriétés d'un CPRL peuvent être reproduites dans le régime hypersonique. En effet, par le biais de la mise en place d'un nouveau modèle théorique et en proposant un nouveau CPRL à ondes de surface à base de films de diamant, nous avons pu montrer que ce type de cristal peut faire l'objet d'applications potentielles à des fins de guidage et de démultiplexage et ainsi initier la conception de nouveaux dispositifs miniaturisés à ondes de surface destinés aux systèmes de télécommunications (>GHz)
In this PhD work, we focused our interest on the theoretical and experimental study of locally resonant phononic crystals (LRPC) operating in sonic and hypersonic regimes. We first developed numerical models to understand the dispersion behaviour of elastic waves in those plate-type LRPC in which the silicone rubber plays a key role. We showed that with such structure, we can understand clearly how the local resonance (LR) mechanism operates to give rise to opening of low frequency BG two orders of magnitude that the one allowed by Bragg diffusion. The physics behind such structures was also figured out by means of theoretical models. An experimental study was then undertaken by manufacturing a new LRPC plate which has been characterized in terms of elastic behaviour and BG investigation. A perfect concordance was demonstrated between the theoretical an experimental results by evidencing a 2kHz BG opening using a 6mm diameter rubber stub and 1cm periodicity. In addition, waveguiding phenomena was investigated in those structures and showed the possibility of guiding of only one defect mode unlike conventional PCs in which many defects modes are generated. A second part of this study was dealt with LR mechanism in hypersonic regime. Using a new numerical and theoretical approach, we were able to show the BG opening and waveguiding for surface acoustic waves (SAW) in a LRPC composed of metallic stubs arranged on a diamond semi-infinite substrate. The added value of LR in such frequency regime remains in its ability to select only one guided mode due to the longer involved wavelengths. Such structures can then be suitable for filtering and demultiplexing applications

Chapter 3 analyzes the history and content of the Rada Rite, including its ceremony, cycles of salutation, stations of salutation, and rituals. The names of 102 Rada Rite spirits are provided with linguistic and cultural features. The chapter includes 25 Haitian Creole and English facing-page songs by the contemporary Vodou group “Rasin Figuier” that focus on Rada Rite themes and spirits, including Ginen, ounsi kanzo (“initiates”), Papa Legba, Gran Chemen, Marasa, Lesen, Bondye (“God”), Loko, the angel Gabriel, Agaou, Ayizan, Danbala Wèdo, Ayida Wèdo, Vodou flags, the white of Rada, Èzili Freda, Agwe Tawoyo, Nago Rite songs for Ogou Balizay and Olicha, plus a few chante pwen (“songs of criticism”) that address political feuding, literacy, and national unity. The method of Vodou hermeneutics reads in history, religious studies, linguistics, literary criticism, and ethnomusicology to interpret Rasin Figuier’s Rada songs focused on life, order, and rootedness.

Chapter 4 explores the history and content of the Gede Rite. Research on the social and theological characteristics of the Gede spirits and their representations, rituals, and services are examined. More than 40 spirits from the Gede family are introduced along with key linguistic and cultural features. The Gede spirits, especially Bawon Samdi and Grann Brijit, are analyzed in the context of the cemetery, the dead, magic, morality, and migration. The chapter includes 26 Haitian Creole and English facing-page songs by the contemporary Vodou group “Rasin Bwa Kayiman” that focus on Gede Rite themes and spirits, including Gede Nouvavou, Jan Simon Britis, Bawon Lakwa, children, Bawon Kriminèl, betiz (“vulgarity”), Gwo Wòch, Mazaka Lakwa, Gede Nibo, Kwa Marasa, Kwa Senbo, evangelicals, interreligious strife, sex-workers, AIDS, oral sex, genital secretions, chante pwen (“point song”), Mòpyon Lakwa, and Jipitè Lakwa. Vodou hermeneutics explicates the Gede Rite’s links to sexuality, healing, and death.

Background: Epilepsy is a risk factor for suicidal ideation (SI). SI still poorly investigated in caregivers of people with epilepsy (PWE). Aim: We aimed to analyze the prevalence and predictors of SI in adults PWE and caregivers. Methods: We analyzed 548 consecutive PWE (60% women; median age 41 [18-83]) and 191 caregivers (72% women; median age 47 [18-82]) followed at Outpatients’ epilepsy clinics from a tertiary center. We used “item nine” (item scores ≥1) of the BDI-II to determine the SI presence. The presence of symptoms of anxiety (with BAI) and depression (with BDI-II) was defined with scores ≥14 (for both PWE and caregivers). The presence of anti-seizure drugs (ASDs) adverse effects was defined with the “Liverpool Adverse Events Profile” score≥46. Epidemiological factors and anxiety were investigated as predictors of SI in caregivers and PWE (along with seizure frequency, epilepsy-type, and ASDs’ adverse events). Results: Depression was present in 41% of the PWE and 32% of the caregivers (p=0.04). Anxiety was observed in 37% of PWE and 33% of caregivers (p=0.32). The SI frequency was higher in PWE (19%) compared to the caregivers (11%; p=0.02). Logistic regression analyses were performed for both groups separately. For the PWE (model accounted for 17%-27%), the most significant predictors were anxiety (OR 4.4, p<0.001), presence of ASDs’ adverse effects (OR 2, p=0.021), recurrent seizures (OR 3, p<0.004), and younger age (OR 0.98, p<0.037). For the caregivers (model accounted for 18-37%), only anxiety (OR 43, p<0.001) predicted SI. Conclusion: Identifying SI predictors is equally necessary for PWE and caregivers.
