Psychological and psychomotor skills associated with performance in golf were established through ratings provided by 165 men with golf handicaps ranging from 5 to 27. Several components of skilled performance in golf were identified through factor analysis of these ratings, followed by comparisons between lower handicap and higher handicap players. Skilled golfers (those with lower handicaps) reported greater mental preparation, a higher level of concentration when playing golf, fewer negative emotions and cognitions, greater psychomotor automaticity, and more commitment to golf. Three self-report assessment scales (measures of psychological skills and tactics, psychomotor skills, and golf involvement) were developed from the data. Contexts in which these scales can be used are discussed.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare objective speech recognition and subjective hearing handicap outcomes as a function of a degree of hearing loss. Methods: 120 elderly listeners participated, ranging in age from 60-83 years. Listeners’ degrees of hearing loss were derived corresponding to a newly proposed World Health Organization hearing impairment grading system. As objective outcomes, word and sentence recognition scores (WRS, SRS) in quiet were measured at an individually determined most comfortable level. The SRS in noise were obtained at 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The Korean Evaluation Scale for Hearing Handicap questionnaire for non-hearing aid users was used to evaluate the effects of hearing status on social and psychological aspects. Results: Within the same grading of hearing impairment, listeners tended to show a large individual variability in speech-in-noise recognition and subjective hearing handicaps. Listeners with even mild impairment had more reductions in SRS in noise and more handicaps in an interpersonal relationship compared to normal-hearing listeners. Among the listeners with no impairment or mild hearing impairment, listeners who had poorer sentence-in-noise scores actually showed greater hearing handicaps. The sentence-in-noise scores plus WRS explained the subjective hearing handicap by about 40%. Conclusion: The elderly with normal hearing or mild hearing loss can have reduced communication abilities in background noise, resulting in a negative effect on their social and psychological aspects. It is recommended to conduct the sentence-in-noise intelligibility test and the subjective hearing handicap survey as a standard audiometric measures to confirm the functional communication problems for the elderly.

This study aimed to define the concept of chronic health condition in adults as presented in literature. An evolutionary perspective of concept analysis was used, as presented by Rodgers, emphasizing the essential attributes, antecedents, consequences and related concepts. The adult's chronic health condition was presented by the characteristics of permanence, irreversibility, residual handicap, incurable and degenerative as essential attributes. The antecedents were: genetic heritage, old age, birth condition, smoking and foods with saturated fat; and, for the consequences: physical, social and psychological changes, handicaps and inabilities, life style changes, needs to adapt and cope. Related concepts were: not transmissible diseases, functional deficiency, limitations, illness or impairment for more than three months. Chronic health condition is a complex construction of concepts defined as a modifying force of the life process over time.

A prospective, open-label clinical trial was conducted for two aims: first, to evaluate the role of fluvoxamine, one of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, in the treatment of dizziness for the first time and to investigate its effective mechanisms. Second, to test the hypothesis that dizziness in patients without abnormal neuro-otologic findings would be induced by psychiatric disorders rather than by unnoticed neuro-otologic diseases. Nineteen patients with neuro-otologic diseases (Group I) and 22 patients in whom standard vestibular tests revealed no abnormal findings (Group II) were treated by fluvoxamine (200 mg/day) for eight weeks. Subjective handicaps due to dizziness using a questionnaire, anxiety and depressive symptoms measured with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and stress hormones (vasopressin and cortisol) were examined before and 8 weeks after treatment. Overall, fluvoxamine decreased subjective handicaps of both Groups I and II. Fluvoxamine decreased HADS of only patients whose subjective handicaps were reduced (=responders) in both groups, suggesting that fluvoxamine was effective for dizziness via psychiatric action rather than a recovery of vestibular function through serotonergic activation. In non-responders of Group II, pre-treatment HADS was higher than in Group I non-responders and it was not decreased by the treatment, suggesting that dizziness of Group II non-responders was due to severe psychiatric disorders rather than unnoticed neuro-otologic diseases. Anxiety and depression components of HADS showed a good correlation at both pre- and post-treatment periods. No post-therapeutic decrease was observed in either vasopressin or cortisol even in responders, suggesting that dizziness was not the sole cause of stress in chronic dizziness patients. In conclusion, patients with or without physical neuro-otologic deficits who report chronic dizziness accompanied by anxiety and depression (as measured by HADS) showed improvements across a full range of subjective handicaps and psychological distress, while patients with physical neuro-otologic defects and minimal anxiety or depression did not benefit. The main causes of dizziness in patients without physical neuro-otologic findings were psychiatric disorders.

Individual differences in cognitive preferences were examined in analyzing the effects of imagery and self-talk training on the psychological skills and performance levels of amateur golfers. Thirty-two men and women participated in a series of four counterbalanced training workshops and activities conducted over 2 months at two golf clubs. A repeated measures MANOVA revealed significant improvement on five psychological and psychomotor skills measured by the Golf Performance Survey: negative emotions and cognitions, mental preparation, automaticity, putting skill, and seeking improvement. Participants’ responses to the Sport Imagery Questionnaire and ratings of their imagery and self-talk techniques increased significantly after training. Players also lowered their handicaps and performed significantly better on a Golf Skills Test after training. Imagery and self-talk training benefits were not linked to participants’ cognitive preferences. The cognitive flexibility displayed by these golfers signals the need for more research on processing preferences and has implications for practitioners working with athletes.

Smart Golf is a comprehensive approach to improving and scoring the mental game in golf. The five components are preparation, positive focusing (positive self-monitoring), plan, apply, and react. The acronym PAR summarizes the latter three components. A simple scoring system encourages golfers to self-monitor their use of the Smart Golf approach. In this preliminary evaluation of the efficacy of the approach, five experienced golfers (M years of playing = 17.8) participated in a 4-week seminar. Process measures indicated the extent to which participants used the approach. Outcome measures included golf scores at pre- and postintervention and at a 3-month follow-up. Psychological skills were also assessed at pre- and postintervention. Process analyses revealed that participants used the approach consistently during the seminar and follow-up period. All participants improved two critical psychological skills (emotional control and positive self-talk) as well as their average scores (at postintervention) and handicaps (at follow-up).

The hypothesis that self-handicapping is used differentially by men and women was examined in a naturalistic setting. It was expected that the importance of an exam would be a better predictor of self-handicapping for men, whereas stress was predicted to be a better indicator of self-handicapping for women. College students were assessed the class period prior to a mid-term exam. Participants completed a packet of questionnaires that assessed level of stress, self-handicapping tendencies, anticipated handicaps, perceived importance of the exam, the consequences of their performance (i.e. success or failure), and expected performance. The results did not support the hypotheses. However, there is some evidence that the process of self-handicapping is different for men and women. Discussion focuses on explanations for the lack of hypothesized gender interactions, the self-protective utility of self-handicapping and construct validity of the Self-Handicapping Scale (SHS).

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential link between quality of life and social support networks, among clients with mild to borderline intellectual handicaps. This study also explored differences between how the clients assess their quality of life and support networks and how primary caseworkers asses the quality of life and support networks of their clients.
Thirty intellectually handicapped adults (18 men & 12 women) and their primary caseworkers were randomly selected to participate in the study. Significant differences were found between client and primary caseworker evaluations of clients' quality of life and their social support networks. Friends as support providers was strongly associated with better quality of life. The findings also indicated that there were significant differences in female and male client satisfaction with quality of life.

Cette thèse propose d’interroger les formes historiques, sociales et institutionnelles de construction du handicap psychique. En partant du cas des ITEP de Gironde, elle s’interroge plus particulièrement sur les processus d’assignation des jeunes dans ces établissements et sur les arrière-plans (sociaux, familiaux…) qui concourent à leur désignation comme handicapés psychiques (loi de 2005). Mais alors que les regards s’orientent vers les conséquences des handicaps (pour les compenser), notre recherche étudie, a contrario, les racines du handicap psychique comme autant de verdicts cachés qui pèsent sur la potentialité d’être – ou non – orienté en ITEP. La thèse ouvre trois axes de recherche. Le premier, réalise un diagnostic historique. Cinq associations gestionnaires d’ITEP de Gironde sont étudiées, à partir d’entretiens menés avec les directeurs et les pères fondateurs de ces associations. Il s’agit de mettre en relation l’histoire de l’émergence du handicap psychique avec l’histoire du développement successif du tissu associatif girondin. Le deuxième axe consiste en une caractérisation sociale des jeunes d’ITEP à partir d’un recueil de données sociales dans chacun des 20 ITEP de la Gironde (965 jeunes étudiés). L’étude de l’agencement complexe des caractéristiques des jeunes d’ITEP montre qu’être handicapé psychique se pose en terme fort différents selon l’origine sociale des familles et éclaire une première forme d’assignation. Le troisième axe d’analyse s’appuie sur l’observation ethnographique du fonctionnement des Equipes Pluridisciplinaires d’Evaluation (EPE) à la MDPH de la Gironde durant une année. L’examen des procédures d’orientation mises en place, montre que le handicap psychique se construit entre troubles du psychisme et difficultés socio-familiales. La mise en relation de ces trois niveaux d’analyse, permet de mieux comprendre comment se construit le handicap psychique, les masques successifs qui invisibilisent les processus d’assignation et l’idéologie qui les légitime. En plus d’être exilés sur le seuil d’une vie ordinaire, les jeunes handicapés psychiques sont exilés sur le seuil d’un espace potentiel de représentation
This thesis proposes to investigate the psychological disability construction, based on three axes: historical, social and institutional. Studying ITEP (Pedagogic and Educative Therapeutic Institute) from Gironde, we interrogated the assignation process of the teenagers in these facilities and their backgrounds (social, familial, etc) that leads them to be designed as psychologically disabled people (2005 law). Consequently, when the collective attention is focused on the consequences of being handicapped to compensate, we want to study the origins of psychological disability that conduct them – or not – to be oriented in an ITEP. First, we realized an historical diagnosis. We studied five organisations managing ITEP by interviewing their directors, in order to compare the historical beginning of psychological disabilities and the development of Gironde organisations. The second axe consists of a social characterisation of ITEP teenagers by studying social data in all 20 Gironde ITEP (a pool of 965 teenagers). The study of the complex arrangement of ITEP teenager characteristics show that being psychologically disabled is affected by family social origins, showing a first assignation form. The third analytic axis is an ethnographic observation about how the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (EPE) operates in Gironde MDPH during a year. The results of this orientation procedure show how psychological disabilities is built between psychic disorder and social-family difficulties. Linking these three analytic parts allows for a better understanding about how the psychological disability is constructed, all invisible steps of the assignation processes and what legitimates them. In addition to having difficulties living an ordinary life, all conditions are combined to prevent these psychologically disabled teenagers and their families to have a space dedicated to social representation

Le handicap psychique est une expression française qui s’est imposée récemment, mais qui fait l’objet de diverses acceptions. Nous le situons dans le contexte très large des vulnérabilités et dans celui plus restreint des situations de handicap. Alors qu’il est communément admis que le handicap psychique est une conséquence sociale d’une maladie mentale, nous montrons que des personnes sont en situation de handicap d’origine psychique (shop) alors qu’elles n’ont aucune pathologie mentale avérée et qu’elles ne suivent aucun traitement psychiatrique. Pour cela, nous nous appuyons sur l’expérience d’un dispositif appelé Médiation logement ; dans ce contexte, des psychologues cliniciens vont au-devant de personnes recluses dans leur logement, ou qui manifestent des troubles du comportement ou du voisinage, et qui n’ont aucun antécédent psychiatrique. Nous montrons qu’il s’agit bien de personnes en situation de handicap d’origine psychique (peshop). Cela nous conduit à donner une nouvelle définition du handicap psychique. Puis nous proposons une grille de lecture clinique qui permettrait qu’une équipe mobile puisse faire un diagnostic précoce d’un syndrome incapacitant discret d’origine psychique (sidop) qui se révèle chez une personne ayant une fragilité singulière au moment où elle est confrontée à un évènement traumatique personnel et/ou social
The handicap psychique (psychological handicap) is a French expression which has imposed itself recently. It is the subject of various meanings. We place it in the very broad context of vulnerabilities and in the more restricted situations of handicap. While it is commonly accepted that psychological handicap is a social consequence of a mental disease, we show that people with handicap of psychological origin (HOPO) have no proven mental disorder and do not undergo any psychiatric treatment. We rely on the experience of a plan called Médiation logement. In this “Housing mediation” clinical psychologists meet people who are reclusive in their homes, or who exhibit behaviour or neighbourhood disturbances. Those people have no psychiatric history and we show that they share a common feature: a discrete incapacitating syndrome of psychological origin (DISOPO). This leads us to give a new definition of psychological handicap. Then we propose a clinical reading tool that would allow a team to make an early diagnosis of this DISOPO that appears in a person with a singular fragility when faced with personal and / or social traumatic of stressful event

L’évaluation du handicap permet d’identifier les besoins spécifiques puis de cibler des préconisations thérapeutiques adaptées (médicales, techniques, rééducatives et psycho sociales). Le travail spécifique de cette thèse visait le développement de questionnaires d’évaluation de la perception et de l’adaptation au handicap auditif et visuel chez l’adulte, la validation de ces questionnaires et leur application clinique : le QUEPAHAA (Questionnaire d’Evaluation de la Perception et de l’Adaptation du Handicap Auditif chez l’Adulte) et le QUEPAHVA (Questionnaire d’Evaluation de la Perception et de l’Adaptation du Handicap Visuel chez l’Adulte). Les résultats statistiques ont attesté de leurs bonnes qualités psychométriques. Notre étude s’est prolongée par leur mise en application clinique. Les résultats ont montré les effets significatifs d’un parcours de soins pluridisciplinaire sur la perception et l’adaptation au handicap sensoriel. Puis, nous avons réalisé l’étude de deux cas individuels. Les entretiens cliniques et les questionnaires ont montré une amélioration de l’adaptation au handicap et de l’humeur à la suite de l’accompagnement pluridisciplinaire. Nouveaux outils interdisciplinaires, le QUEPAHAA et le QUEPAHVA recouvrent un intérêt diagnostic, thérapeutique et institutionnel. Outre qu’ils permettent une meilleure compréhension des personnes, ces questionnaires peuvent être intégrés dans des pratiques professionnelles, des protocoles de soins ou de recherche clinique
Handicap assessment makes it possible to identify specific needs and then to target adapted therapeutic recommendations (medical, technical, rehabilitation and psycho social). The specific work of this thesis aimed at the development of questionnaires to assess perception and adaptation to hearing and visual handicap in adults, the validation of these questionnaires and their clinical application: the QUEPAHAA (Questionnaire for the Assessment of Perception and Adaptation of Hearing Handicap in Adults) and the QUEPAHVA (Questionnaire for the Assessment of Perception and Adaptation of Visual Handicap in Adults). The statistical results have attested to their good psychometric qualities. Our study continued with their clinical application. The results showed the significant effects of a multidisciplinary care program on the perception and adaptation to sensory handicap.Then, we carried out the study of two individual cases. Clinical interviews and questionnaires showed improvement in handicap adaptation and mood following multidisciplinary care program. New interdisciplinary questionnaires, QUEPAHAA and QUEPAHVA cover a diagnostic, therapeutic and institutional interest. In addition to allowing a better understanding of people, these questionnaires can be integrated into professional practices, care protocols or clinical research

Dans le champ de la psychopathologie infanto-juvénile, un ensemble de comportements hétérogènes, tels que la désobéissance, le vol, le mensonge, l’agressivité verbale et physique sont regroupés sous le vocable « troubles du comportement et de la conduite ». La question de l’origine de cette catégorie utilisée pour nommer certains types de transgressions interroge. Tout d’abord, cette thèse propose de suivre ce terme nosographique dans sa singularité savante, ses sédimentations, sa temporalité historique et son inscription dans un régime discursif. C’est pourquoi, les travaux de Georges Heuyer, figure pionnière dans la structuration du champ de la psychiatrie infanto-juvénile, occupent une place prégnante dans cette thèse. Ensuite, il s’agit dans cette enquête de saisir, au plus près, la chaîne de désignation qui débute à l’école, passe par la Maison Départementale des Personnes Handicapées (MDPH), pour aboutir à l’Institut Thérapeutique Éducatif et Pédagogique (ITEP). Notre intérêt s’est porté sur le processus d’évaluation médico-administrative au sein des équipes pluridisciplinaires de la MDPH. Enfin, l’analyse conduite tend à mettre en évidence la façon dont la classification « troubles du comportement et de la conduite » retentit sur les représentations des personnes désignées
In the field of child psychopathology, a set of diverse behaviors, like disobedience, theft, lying, and verbal and physical aggression, are grouped under the label “Behaviour and Conduct Disorders”. The question of the origins of the category used to name certain types of transgressions raised questions. The following thesis suggests to follow this nosographic term in its scholarly singularity, its sedimentations, its historical temporality and its inscription in a discursive regime. That is why, the work of Georges Heuyer, a pioneering figure in the structuration of the Child and Young Psychiatry field, occupies a significant position in this thesis. Then, it is in this investigation to seize, as close as possible, the name chain starting from the school, going through MDPH and ending at ITEP. Our interest was focused on the medico-administrative assessment process within multidisciplinary teams at the MDPH. Finally, the conducted analysis highlights the way the classification “behavior and conduct disorders” reverberated on the representations of the designated people

Ce travail doctoral porte sur l'accroissement des investissements directs à l'étranger dans les pays développés par les entreprises des marchés émergents (EMEs) et leur besoin à attirer et retenir les salariés de talents à l'Ouest. Au moyen de deux enquêtes distinctes nous abordons cette question avec trois études différentes mais complémentaires. La première étude se réfère à la théorie de « organization attractiveness » : Les EMEs ont-elles un handicap d'« emergingness » qui réduit leur attractivité en tant qu'employeur ? Dans le deuxième essai, nous nous appuyons de recherche relatif au « capital psychologique » : Les salariés ayant des niveaux plus élevés de capital psychologique sont-ils moins touchés par le handicap d'« emergingness » ? En utilisant la méthode du « policy capturing » le troisième essai répond à la question : Le handicap d'« emergingness » des EMEs a-t-il un impact sur la décision des salariés de talents de quitter leur emploi après une acquisition? Les résultats suggèrent que les EMEs ont une attractivité organisationnelle significativement plus faible que les entreprises des marchés développés et que les salariés ayant des niveaux plus élevés de capital psychologique sont plus attirés par des sociétés multinationales, et cela quel soit leur origine et que les EMEs subiront une perte de personnel post- acquisition plus élevée. Cette recherche met en évidence l'impact négatif du handicap d'« emergingness » rencontré par les EMEs sur les marchés occidentaux. This doctoral research focuses on emerging market multinational corporations' (EMNCs) increasing outward foreign direct investment into developed countries and their need to attract and/or retain key Western talent. Using two separate surveys we address this lacuna with three research studies. The first essay uses theory from the organization attractiveness literature to answer the research question: Do EMNCs have a liability of emergingness lowering their attractiveness as employers? In the second essay, we draw upon the rising field of psychological capital to address the research question: Are individuals higher in psychological capital less affected by the liability of emergingness bias? Finally, using policy capturing modeled from the merger and acquisition literature stream, the third essay answers the research question: Does EMNC liability of emergingness impact post-acquisition turnover intentions? Findings in the first essay suggest that EMNCs have significantly lower organizational attractiveness than developed market firms. In the second essay, we find individuals higher in psychological capital more attracted to multinational corporations regardless of their origin. The third study suggests that EMNCs will have higher post-acquisition turnover than developed market firms. Theoretically, this research highlights the negative impact of the liability of emergingness faced by EMNCs in Western markets. Our research further suggests that EMNC managers responsible for recruiting and retention should recognize this bias by focusing on individuals with high levels of psychological capital

Zdeňka Michalová Psychologické aspekty individualizace přístupu k žákům se specifickými poruchami učení Individualization of Approach to Learnes with Specific Learning Disabilities and It's Psychological Aspects Annotation This thesis deals with theoretical and practical knowledge and skills of teachers in primary schools for specific learning disabilities. It focuses mainly on mapping the level of teachers' approach to integrated learners with this disorder. It is trying to grasp the extent to which teachers meet the psychological aspects of individual approach to these learners in inclusive environment of a primary school compared with integrated learners with other disabilities. The theoretical part summarises basic information on education, integration and education system in the Czech Republic. It deals with specific learning disabilities and attempts to apply the findings from positive psychology on individual approach to individuals with SLD. The empirical part analyses and compares the quantitative survey of knowledge level of teachers at lower and higher levels of primary schools about SLD. Furthermore, it examines their knowledge of appropriate procedures for working with learners with SLD and ability to apply it in practice to psychologically support of these learners. Most of us have to work for a living. There are bills to pay and families to provide for. Since fibromyalgia patients do not usually look ill and on superficial examination appear strong, complaints of difficulty performing the job can be hard to believe. This chapter will review definitions as they apply to disability, impairments reported in fibromyalgia patients, and constructive approaches that allow individuals with the syndrome to work most effectively. The World Health Organization defines disability as a limitation of function that compromises the ability to perform an activity within a range considered normal. Efforts to manage work disabilities considers issues such as age, sex, level of education, psychological profile, past attainments, motivation, retraining prospects, and social support systems. Additionally, work disability issues take into account work-related self-esteem, motivation, stress, fatigue, personal value systems, and availability of financial compensation. An impairment is an anatomic, physiologic, or psychological loss that leads to disability. Impairments include pain from work activities (e.g., heavy lifting), emotional stress (e.g., working in a complaint department), or muscle dysfunction (e.g., cerebral palsy). A handicap is a job limitation or something that cannot be done (e.g., deafness). Patients with a disability can be permanently, totally disabled and thus potentially eligible for Social Security Disability and Medicare health benefits. Other classifications include being permanently, partially disabled, whereby vocational rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and psychological or ergonomic evaluations can address impairments or handicaps to optimize employment retraining possibilities. Temporary, partial disability allows one to work with restrictions (e.g., no lifting more than ten pounds) while treatment is in progress. Temporary, total disability involves a leave of absence from employment while undergoing treatment so that one can return to work. Subjective factors of disability include symptoms such as pain or fatigue, while objective factors of disability are physical signs such as a heart murmur or a swollen joint. One can be disabled from a work category and granted disability even if employment is ongoing in a different work category. Work categories are rated as sedentary, light work, light medium work, medium work, heavy work, or very heavy work, each defined by how much exertion is used over a time interval.

Disorders of intellectual development— or learning disability (LD)— denote a permanent impairment of intelligence associated with limitations of social func­tioning. A distinction is to be made between LD and dementia, the former originating early in life and the latter after 18 years of age. Although not reversible, much can be done to enable people with LDs to live as normally as possible. It is helpful for doctors to have basic knowledge of LD so they have an approach when the patient presents with physical or mental health problems and know when to refer to psychiatry. Several interchangeable terms are used to describe people with intellectual impairment originating early in life, including: … ● LD (common term used in Europe) ● Intellectual disability ● Disorder of intellectual impairment ● Mental retardation (this term is being phased out for ICD- 11 and has been removed from the DSM- 5). … The term LD implies more than intellectual im­pairment. It aims to separate those who cannot lead a near- normal life from people of the same IQ level who can. Patients with LD can be subdivided into categories which tend to be prognostically very useful (Table 19.1 and Box 19.1). A LD is not a clinical diagnosis in its own right, just a way of describing a particular clinical syndrome of impairments with disability and handicaps. The underlying diagnosis is the cause(s) of these impairments, which may or may not have been identified. The terms impairment, disability, and handicap are not interchangeable. The value of their use is in describing an individual’s specific needs, irrespective of their aetiological diagnosis. … ● Impairment is any loss or abnormality of psychological, physical, or anatomical structure or function. It is not dependent upon aetiology. ● Disability is any restriction in the ability to perform an activity within the range considered normal for a human at a corresponding level of development. ● A handicap is a disadvantage for a person, due to their impairment or disability, that prevents them from fulfilling a role that is normal for that individual…. The definition of LD as an IQ less than 70 (in combin­ation with an impairment of function) is based upon the assumption that IQ is normally distributed with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15.
