Objective. This research aims at defining the principles of constructing effective narratives with the use of the strategic communication capabilities and the media. Materials and Methods. Publications in modern English and Ukrainian mass-media have been analyzed using methods and techniques of discourse analysis, content- and intent-analysis with elements of pragmatic and narrative analysis. The author’s methodology included the following: to identify the author’s intention and motives, the main topoi and points of the narrative focalization, to define hidden beliefs, social and psychological basis for the recipient’s perception of the narrative, to outline effective strategies for the narrative construction and dissemination in the media. Results. In general, modern media have the capacity of constructing the desired frames in the audience’s consciousness by creating a mental model of the situation, on which the consumer of the information starts to rely. Decision-making now is reliant on the media consciousness, a virtual world imposed by the media and constructed with the help of relevant narratives. Modern strategic narratives usually have the external focalization which gets more credibility when supported and presented by the focalization points of celebrities and experts. Competing narratives, as well as the plurality of possible interpretations of events, are destroyed with the help of the media, which begin to broadcast one interpretation of the event that matches the narrative, by this making it the truth. Simultaneous use of several different media intensifies the influence and support the narrative. Repeating information changes its status and makes it not just a fact, but general knowledge. Any narrative is not only a sequential story of the selected events, but also persuasion in its nature. Persuasion is enhanced when narratives resonate with the audience's value system. Conclusions. As a strategic communication tool, an effective narrative is constructed with regard to all the aspects of communication, psycholinguistic and social aspects being especially important. Further insights into the problem of shaping narratives will allow outlining best practices and their elements to develop image-forming narratives.

Abstract The growing body of research on Chinese as an international (or “global”) language examines linguistic, psycholinguistic, social-psychological, and orthographic aspects of acquisition primarily. There has been relatively little critical discussion or analysis of the larger social context and discourses in which Chinese language education is embedded. However, recently sociocultural, discursive, and critical aspects of the teaching, learning, and use of Chinese as an additional language have begun to receive more attention. This study analyzes circulating discourses, ideologies, and tropes related to Chinese in news media, as one means by which information and perspectives are spread by media and by which public attitudes and policy decisions are (recursively) shaped or reproduced. To this end, a large sample of English-medium news reports of Chinese language education in three Anglophone countries was created and analyzed for the years 2004 to 2012. The findings revealed that reports dealing with Chinese education tended to fall into one of several major tropes, which we have roughly classified as “hope,” “hype,” and “fear,” distinctions that parallel existing models of cyclical or amplified media coverage of innovations or otherwise newsworthy events. The sociopolitically and socioeconomically motivated occurrence of these tropes in the media, combined with the novelty of the Chinese language itself, a historically less frequently taught language in comparison with various European languages, constituted a consistent and recurring narrative. Thus, the shifting representations of Chinese learning in the media tended to appear as corollaries or “side stories” servicing the needs of larger geopolitical events and perceived or desired changes in public sentiment. These trends and their significance are illustrated and discussed in relation to Global Chinese.

ABSTRACTAssessments of the narrative abilities of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease should consider the interactions that generate the narratives. By analyzing the discourse of an AD patient in interaction with two different interlocutors, namely her husband and the author, this study calls attention to ways in which one interaction facilitates narratives and the other does not. Previous psycholinguistic research, largely focusing on the resultant narrative, has understood the AD patient's deteriorating narrative skills as a result of the progressively debilitating nature of the disease. This is undoubtedly true, but extensive and meaningful talk is nevertheless possible, partially grounded in and constructed through social interaction. The article is aimed at studying psycholinguistic issues regarding the interpretation variability and linguocultural accommodation of conceptual basis representing the determinants of the Chinese military and political discourse by the Ukrainians. The topicality is stipulated by great interest of the scientists in the fields of psycholinguistics, linguistic culturology, translation studies as to the semantic content within the view of the world displayed by ethnic groups from The Orient. The determinants of the Chinese military and political discourse (discourse, concept, concept sphere, linguistic component, extra-linguistic component) are specified in the article. The Chinese-language military-political discourse is understood as a totality of verbalized oral and written texts created in the context of the politics-oriented communication; ideographic and symbolic embodiment of the national concept sphere, which is governed by the national and culture-centric tactical and strategic vectors of the conflict-free interaction performed by communicants in the spheres of politics, economy, military-industry, international relations. The linguistic phenomena enable the Chinese military and political discourse to be actualized as well as the means of their reproduction in the Ukrainian language [replication (equivalent translation), transliteration, transcoding, descriptive translation, commentary; the communication-equal translation strategy; the redirection strategy where cultural and linguistic adaptations are applied]. The prospects of our further research are seen in the study of tactical and strategic vectors which may determine the peculiarities of reproducing the syntactic component of the discourse under study into the Ukrainian language.

The article focuses on psycholinguistic aspects of the discourse “Radiotelephony of civil aviation” (RTF). The relevance of the research is related to the key role that this discourse plays in ensuring flight safety. Psycholinguistic analysis of radiotelephony allowed us to prove its discursive nature based on procedural, interactive, and real-time attributes. The RTF discourse is defined as a closed, narrow-professional, institutional and dynamic type. This discourse is intentional and focused on safe operation of flight; conventional, limited by a set of stereotyped phrases enshrined in regulatory documents and obligatory for radiotelephony participants’ use, by strict regulation of radiotelephony procedures at all stages of flight. We determined that RTF discourse users as representatives of a certain professional space could realize themselves in a limited set of communicative roles. Communicative process “pilot – air traffic controller” is based on the “circular model”, since one-way communication in this type of discourse is not provided for. The “status-role” relations of RTF participants are primarily realized by means of the binary opposition “the initiator of the message” – “the executor / non-executor of the requested action”. Main speech functions realized in RTF discourse are informative and regulatory. RTF discourse is a “language code”, since information transmitted in it is understandable only to the actors of aviation community. Non-compliance with norms of this language code use, as well as a number of psycho-linguistic, psycho-physiological, and extra-linguistic factors lead to disruption of information coding / decoding processes, cause communicative failures, become concomitant factors of aviation accidents. Analysis of psycholinguistic features of RTF discourse, nature and causes of RTF communication failures, and psycho-physiological features of pilot in-flight activity (information overloading, high tempo of work due to time limits, work in stressful conditions) allowed us to determine types of exercises facilitating the process of future pilots training to cope with real difficulties of professional communication in RTF discourse.

The paper presents an overview of the main tendencies in modern discourse studies in German-speaking circles, further referring to the problem of communicative self-presentation strategies used by the participants in virtual conflict discourse and their usage in certain conflict situations. The linguistic, sociological and psychological aspects of conflict communication play an important role in the research of discourse in German-language discourse studies. The research groups such as the Vienna circle and the Duisburg school of discourse analysis integrated theories on conflict discourse, inter alia the hegemony theory developed by E. Laclau and Ch. Mouffe or the theory of conflict discourse of J. Habermas into their research, focusing mainly on the problem of racism and right extremist discourse in the German-speaking public sphere. The modern research includes also sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of racist discourse research. Scientific works published in the last ten years focus mainly on problems of hidden racism within public and social institutions and racist discourse within teenager groups. The study of different sociological and psychological factors of communicative behavior are aimed at reconstructing social crises and forecast of future tendencies in order to avoid further cases of discrimination in society. With the growing importance of media as source of knowledge and instrument of influence, virtual communication becomes an integral part of discourse formation and articulation. On the one hand, such special features of the Internet, as spontaneity of communication, anonymity of the users, as well as the unlimited number of potential participants, provide a free choice of instruments of self-presentation. On the other hand, however, they involve certain limitations of the communication process itself: such features as social status, social or physical power can no longer be source of influence on the opponent. Thus, participants of conflict discourse have to defend their own and their social group's positive image by choosing suitable communicative strategies of self-presentation and presentation of the opponent. Positive self-presentation in conflict discourse includes a strong division of communicative space into oppositional categories, such as ME (US)-YOU (THEY), GOOD-BAD or RIGHT-WRONG, where the ME (US) group is credited with positive qualities such as good, intelligent, experienced, rightful etc, whereas such negative qualities, as bad, stupid, inexperienced, wrong are attributed to the opponent group. The analysis of such self-presentation strategies and categorization processes allows making conclusions about the mental aspects of discourse practices in separate social and ethnocultural groups basing on psycholinguistic features of intercultural and interpersonal conflict discourse.

Psycholinguistic peculiarities of verbal aggression in English political discourse. The article examines aspects of speech aggression that allows social pressure to be exercised in the conditions of the asymmetric social status of participants in verbal communications. The factors of linguistic objectification are investigated from the perspective of age, social, gender, personal characteristics and characteristics of subjects of discourse. As an example of verbal aggression, the speech acts of public speeches of the incumbent President of the United States of America D. Trump, which are considered as an integral part of an individual's activities, due to high semantic significance and the necessary level of interpersonal interaction, were subjected to linguistic analysis. The use of aggression in Trump's political discourse is is guided by reason, not emotion. His consistent use of derogatory nicknames, constant attention to the media, as well as the selection of offensive words that draw attention to the specific shortcomings of his addressees indicate that aggression is not based on impulsiveness or randomness. Verbal aggression aimed at lowering the opponent's social status is one of the methods of an offensive strategy and affects, sometimes significantly, the decision-making of an offended person. The use of methods of verbal aggression by D. Trump in the context of political discourse can be a powerful "weapon" both in relation to the internal political situation and in the external political arena. Such aspects, in the context of the increasing influence of forms of digital culture on the psycho-emotional sphere of a person, leave researchers with ample opportunities in the field of scientific research.

The psycholinguistic experiments reported in this paper explore the question of who gets to be the ‘judge’ according to whom we interpret linguistic expressions that seem to require some kind of epistemic anchor, such as epithets (e.g. that jerk). Experiments 1a and 1b corroborate Harris and Potts’ (2009) findings that epithets and appositives can receive non-speaker-oriented readings. Experiments 2 and 3 compare sentences with and without epithets and epistemic adverbs, and show that the presence of these elements can in fact boost the rate of non-speaker-oriented interpretations, at least in contexts that allow the text to be interpreted as fiction/narrative. We suggest this is because, in such contexts, expressions like epithets and epistemic adverbs can signal free indirect discourse.

The article deals with the actual issues of psycholinguistics, which are related to the preservation and restoration of human health. The main research directions research of psychology of health are determined and the theoretical preconditions of psycholinguistic aspects of health are analyzed. Researches in cognitive-behavioral and positive psychotherapy makes it possible to determine that the spoken words directly affect the state of person’s health. The lack of detailed empirical studies motivated us to this study, which was intended to determine the qualitative differences in the speech production of healthy and sick people. The hypothesis of the empirical study was that there are common sense traits of the narrative that unite people with a medical diagnosis. The hypothesis verification was carried out with the help of psycholinguistic techniques, in particular, the autonarrative "My Life" and the method "Psychological Autobiography". The sample was composed from oncologic patients and healthy people, students of univercities. After analysis and interpretation of the results of the study, it was found that differences in speech experience and the implementation of speech activity of healthy and sick people are in the qualitative characteristics of the subjective evaluation of the components of the internal picture of life, manifested through the analysis of the syntagmatic composition of the narrative. Common narratives that combine the speech activity of sick people are: 1) increase the proportion of words with negative emotional coloring on the assessment of their own lives; 2) increase the proportion of "affective" words on the designation of the somatic and personal components of the internal picture of life; 3) the presence of syntagmas describing autoaggression and retroflection. The study shows the correlations between the peculiarities of speech experience and the state of health of respondents. So, in this perspective psycholinguistics of health determine the laws of the influence of personality’s speech on the state of his mental, social and physical health as the main subject of its studies.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines data from account-giving in Sesotho. Am account-making process according to Warren (1989), is more like a "life in motion" in which individual characters are portrayed as moving through their experiences, dealing with some problem in their lives and at the same time diligently searching for a resolution. It is then this quest to understand the major stresses in each individual's mind that is at the core of this study. The reasons that lead to the result of the daily experiences of destitution, depression, death, disability etc, are also addressed here. Narrative accounts form the basis of moral and social events and as such, stories have two elements through which they are explored. They are explored firstly in the way in which they are told and secondly, in the way they are lived in the social context. These stories follow a historically or culturally based format, and to this effect, Gergen (1994) posited narrative criteria that constitute a historically contingent narrative form. Narrative forms are linguistic tools that have important social functions to satisfactorily fulfil such needs as stability narrative, progressive narrative and regressive narrative.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek data oor verslagdoening in Sesotho.

This small exploratory study considers the use of the narrative approach in eliciting and understanding illness stories. The four participants, (two male and two female) range in age from 29 years to 74 years. They live with a variety of chronic illnesses (heart disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Pick's disease). Narrative analysis of the four semi-structured transcribed interviews revealed four dominant themes: the emotional reaction to diagnosis; the role of stress in aggravating and coping with chronic illness; a view of death; the meaning attributed to illness.
A postmodern perspective is employed to explicate the social construction of the notion of chronic illness. A critique of the medical discourse regarding chronic health challenges is offered.
This study invites social workers to consider their position of power and privilege as they learn new ways of listening to illness narratives.

The aim of this paper is, firstly, to consider a contemporary literary methodology, that of Paul Ricoeur, and secondly, to critique that methodology from the perspective of a sharply contextual approach, in association with a materialist theory of literature, such as that emerging from the South African context. Ricoeur's position is useful as a starting point because of the eclectic make up of his theory. His work includes aspects of the historical critical approach, psychoanalytic theory, structuralism, philosophy and a response to materialist thinking. We are, however, choosing to restrict ourselves to the more recent work of Ricoeur corresponding broadly to the period 1975-1990. In this period Ricoeur's concentration shifts from the hermeneutics of symbol to the hermeneutics of language.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the theoretical work in articulating the motivations and conditions for account-giving in isiXhosa in relation to image restoration. This emotional and behavioural rehabilitation is done through accounts. In this context, accounts are similar to narratives and can be retained at the level of private reflections or written as diary entries or for others to read and refer to from time to time. The account-making process according to Warren (1989), is like a "life in motion" in which individual characters are portrayed as moving through their experiences, dealing with some conflict or problem in their lives and at the same time searching for a resolution. It is then this quest to understand the major stresses in each individual's mind that is at the core of this study. The why questions that are the result of the daily experiences of destitution, depression, death, disability, etc., are also addressed here. The importance of the intelligibility of accounts is established with reference to Schank and Abelson (1977) who contend that people construct accounts based on their knowledge structure approach, causal reasoning and text comprehension. Thus, for an account to be hounered, it has to be goal-oriented and coherent. In this study, the social-interactive aspects of account-giving are investigated and it is discovered that severe reproach forms involving personality attacks and derogatory aspects, elicit defensive reactions that result in negative interpersonal and emotional consequences. The mitigation-aggravation continuum is then examined with regard to the selection of the failure management strategies. Narrative accounts based on Mcintyre (1981) form the basis of moral and social events and as such, stories have two elements through which they are explored. They are explored firstly in the way in which they are told and secondly, on the way they are lived in the social context. These stories follow a historically or culturally based format and to this effect, Gergen (1994) suggested a narrative criteria that constitute a historically contingent narrative form. Narrative forms are linguistic tools that have important social functions to satisfactorily fulfil such as stability narrative, progressive narrative and regressive narrative. According to Gergen (1994), self-narratives are social processes in which individuals are realized on the personal perspective or experience, and as such their emotions are viewed as constitutive features of relationship. The self-narratives used and analysed in this study portray the contemporary culture-based elements or segments of a well-formed narrative.

In recent years, the media have publicized the social problem of physical child abuse. This study examined three artifacts of physical abuse: the children's book Robin's Story, the popular song "Luka," and the television documentary Scared Silent: Exposing and Ending Child Abuse. Chapter One described each artifact and provided a literature review which detailed the writings about physical child abuse and artifacts discussing this topic. The chapter then posed research questions about how the artifacts viewed abused children and their abusers, the causes of abuse, and the solutions proposed for ending physical abuse.Chapter One finally discussed the narrative framework of rhetorical analysis used to examine the three artifacts. The narrative method used in this analysis employed three steps: 1) An examination of narrative structure, which discussed the plot of the story, the crucial points of the story and the events which supplemented those points, and the steps of breach, crisis, redress, and reintegration in the narrative; 2) An examination of narrative rationality, which talked about the completeness and true to life quality of the story and evaluated the reasons the rhetors gave for following the course of action endorsed by the story; and 3) An examination of narrative standards, including truth standard or how the narrative compares with what the audience believes is true; aesthetic standard or the grammar, setting, and characterization within the story, and ethical standard or the values expressed within the narrative. Chapter Two applied this framework to the children's book Robin's Story. Chapter Three viewed the popular song "Luka" through the narrative framework. Chapter Four discussed the documentary Scared Silent in terms of narrative analysis.Chapter Five then discussed the conclusions of the analysis for each artifact, artifacts discussing physical abuse, and for rhetoric. Some of the conclusions reached were that artifacts discussing physical child abuse should attempt to make their stories universal, that such artifacts need to distinguish between abuse and physical punishment, and that artifacts dealing with this problem must provide concrete courses of action to end physical abuse. This analysis concluded that, while narrative analysis provided the answers to the research questions, this framework needs to be made into a concrete method of rhetorical analysis to ensure that narratives are effectively evaluated. Narrative analysis was positive in this analysis, however, in that it supported the definitions of rhetoric as value, epistemology, motive, drama, meaning, and argument. This analysis found that, to end the problem of physical child abuse, rhetors must work with experts in this field and tailor artifacts from different perspectives to various audiences using different forms of media.

The purpose of this project was to study the second-person narrative tools used by one particular therapist-client pair in an on-going therapy relationship. One male therapist and one male client were each individually interviewed on five occasions. The first interview with each of them focused on their views of what it means to be a therapist, client, and in therapy. The next three individual interviews involved reviewing previously recorded therapy sessions, and asking the co-researchers (the therapist and client) to respond as if they were the other person in the therapy relationship. The final interview focused on their views of the research process and all the participants. Using an instructional account informed by social constructionist language, the metaphor of narrative, and the decentering of the possessive "I" for the more relationally-oriented "you," I organized the data of the interviews into second-person narratives that seemed to be used by the client and therapist. One of the primary narratives the client used to make sense of the therapist was that the therapist was an "augmenter of the client’s processes." The client seemed to primarily position the researcher as someone doing "research, not therapy." Some of the narratives the therapist used to position the client included "someone needing to vent emotions," "carrier of labels and stories," "employer," and "seeker of options." One of the tools the therapist used to position the researcher was as a nontraditional "Supervisor." Some narratives seemed to fit into broad categories such as "self-as-same" and "self-as-different." However, the more salient understandings that seemed to develop out of this study have been derived from the co-researchers’ perceptions of how this project became a part of the therapy relationship and, therefore, what might be said about how therapy is usually conducted. More specifically, the process of this study invited reflection on how the therapy conversation has been traditionally divided into two conversations, a therapy conversation and a supervision conversation. I propose there are some benefits in viewing these usually separated conversations as parts of one conversation.

Previously understood as a fixed and universal set of behaviours social constructionists are now arguing that masculinity is contextual and fluid, reflecting a multiplicity of different understandings. Within any 'cultural environment' the discourse of masculinity, culturally and historically bound, expresses attitudes and behaviours that shape the understanding of what it means to be a man. Adopting a narrative approach and analysis this research explores the stories of six Zulu men in seeking to elicit the aspects of their masculinity and show how these men negotiate an identity 'position' from the social narratives available to them. It was found that while the ideal Adult (responsible) man contrasts with the Young man's ('isoka' ) position there is a consistently hegemonic and patriarchal notion of masculinity.

Chapter 3 extends and amends the Radical Fictionalist approach from Chapter 2, taking as its starting point the case of heterodiegetic narrative. In particular, this chapter introduces the distinction between storyworlds and narrative peripheries, and it studies its semantic repercussions. The central sections of the chapter are devoted to the study of fictional names in heterodiegetic fiction. They introduce the ideas of referential permeability and of peripheral launching, and they continue the discussion of the role of fictional tellers. The final section of this chapter applies some aspects of the Radical Fictionalist distinction between storyworlds and peripheries to the issue of narrative time, and it defends an understanding of narrative time as fictional.

This chapter covers some central topics related to narrative fiction, taking as its starting point the Radical Fictionalist focus on peripheral discourse and fictional telling. In particular, the chapter discusses certain features of allegedly inconsistent fictions and of storyworld importation, with particular attention to the theory in David Lewis’ ‘Truth in Fiction’ and to the case of postmodernist literature. The chapter also discusses some aspects of unreliable narratives, and it puts forth an analysis of alleged cases of importation by appealing to the closure of peripheral discourse. Finally, this chapter defends a Radical Fictionalist take on the distinction between nested and framed narratives.

The fifth chapter focuses on the functional aspects of the various discourse presentation modes in 19th-century narrative fiction and particularly their role for the expression of subjectivity. The functional interpretation is based on the quantitative findings for the frequency, character, and combination of unambiguous as well as ambiguous discourse presentation modes in the corpus, also including hypothetical speech, writing, and thought presentation. The latter appear with considerable frequency in the 19th-century data. The chapter further describes and analyzes repetitive lexico-grammatical patterns identified for the different modes of discourse presentation and retrieved by the analysis of keywords and collocational structures.

In addition to the determinacy created by the stories' or characters' goal-directed actions, the indeterminacy created by the non-story and nostalgia aspects of rhetoric is an essential issue of narrative simulation for non-story film rhetoric composition. The narrative simulation can test cognitive effects created through the interaction between the cognitive process, story, discourse, and the rhetoric of a film. Non-story film editing can be classified according to the categories of rhythm and nostalgia, and can be used for narrative film rhetoric simulation. Nostalgia may emerge with the determinacy of the place and time and the indeterminacy of non-story aspects of rhetoric. Non-nostalgia narrative may emerge with the indeterminacy of the place and time and can be simulated by the use of the non-story editing regarding the rhythm categories.

This chapter explains the theory behind an information communication technology (ICT) being developed to provide marginalised populations with a tool for uniting the voices of progressive-minded activists. The theory suggests that with this technology, seemingly incompatible progressive groups might enlarge their campaigns for social equity, creating a global, heterogeneous network. The ICT allows for the capture of crowd-sourced artistic creativity, and through algorithms that have been shaped by academics in public administration, makes content retrievable as pluralistic, policy-supporting narrative threads. The new narratives should also work to alter the discourse within communities by diminishing the worldview threats associated with zero-sum ideology. This ICT is seen as vital because of how powerful lobbyists (funded by global elites) have consistently been successful in skewing the outcomes of policymaking decisions and elections. The system is firmly rooted in the small-group, consensus-building organisational theories of respected authors dating back to the 1970s.

One's linguistic discourse is directly linked to his or her identity construction. The author conducted a qualitative study that investigated the sociolinguistic and sociocultural identities, both current and imagined, of a newly arrived adolescent of refugee status, named Yerodin, through a photo-narrative approach. Yerodin was unique in that he was 11 years old when he arrived to the United States but did not have any prior formalized schooling. Therefore, he was illiterate in both his first language of Swahili and second language of English. This study took place during a summer school program that sought to develop Yerodin and his siblings' literacy skills before the upcoming school year. Findings illustrated Yerodin's current identity as one who appreciated his experiences in the refugee camp prior to resettlement and as an English learner. Furthermore, Yerodin realized that English, his second language, and academics were key to accessing his desired communities of identity, including aspects of American culture and friendships with “American peers.”

This chapter is a joint discussion of key items related to the use of dynamic assessment (DA) in spoken and signed language assessment contexts that were discussed in Chapters 3.1 and 3.2. One aspect of spoken language assessment with great potential to inform new research in signed language is the number and detail of available approaches that test different parts of the language system. Whereas DA with signing children has been used exclusively for assessing vocabulary, approaches in spoken languages have also targeted morphology, phonology, sentence structure, and narrative discourse. In comparison, an area where the available research from signed language could help inform the use of DA for spoken language is the involvement of children and families in co-producing goals to guide assessment and intervention. The authors also raise a couple of aspects that are of equal relevance for both fields and which provide opportunities for increased interdisciplinary collaboration.

This chapter examines ways in which the Hymn to Delos revisits the role of the king as a guard, set out in the first hymn. Here, Kallimachos adds nuance to his earlier characterization by distinguishing between the savior, Apollo, who protects and the tyrant, Hera, who oppresses those who are less powerful. As in the preceding hymns, Kallimachos de-emphasizes aspects of his narrative that could be seen as anti-dynastic, presenting in its place a more whimsical account. Explicitly paralleling the birth, kingship, and universal empire of Apollo and Ptolemy II Philadelphos, Kallimachos effectively replaces Zeus with a new paradigm of ideal kingship. This hymn’s embrace of a pan-Mediterranean stage mirrors, in a way, Philadelphos’ efforts to expand his kingdom into a vast, overseas empire during the first years of his reign. During this period, the honorific title Sōtēr, meaning “Savior,” once again gained currency within diplomatic discourse as a way for independent poleis to laud kings who had saved them from invading Gauls. Not only does Kallimachos incorporate this contemporary dynamic into his hymn, but he also maps the diplomatic traffic in praise onto the reciprocal charis dynamic that traditionally obtains between a hymnist and his honorand.

The paper focuses on the interlacement of literary and iconographic elements by displaying an innovatory philological and stylistic approach, from a comparative perspective, in thematizing multilingual translational and adaptive aspects, ranging across Bernard Berenson's diaristic and epistolary corpus, in conjunction with his works on Italian visual culture. This interweaving gives occasion to the elaboration of multilinguistic textual influences and their verbo-visual artistic representations deduced from his innovative interpretative readings in the domain of world literature in modern times. Such analysis of the discourse of theoretical and literary nature, and of the pictoricity, refers to Bernard Berenson's multilingual considerations about canonical authors in English, Italian, French, German language, belonging to the Neoclassical and Romantic period, as well as to the contemporary era, as conceptualized in his autobiographical works, in correlation with his writings on Italian figurative art. The scope of this presentation is to discern and articulate Berenson's aesthetic ideas evoking literary and artistic modernity, that are infused with crucial notions of translational theory and conveyed through the methodology of close reading and comprising at the same time, in an omnicomprehensive manner, a plurality of tendencies intrinsic to social paradigms of cultural studies. Unexplored premises reflecting Berenson's vision of Italian culture, most notably of a visual stamp, will be analyzed through author's understandings of such adaptive translations or volumes to be subsequently translated in Italian, and through their intertwined intertextual applications, significantly contributing to further critical and hermeneutic reception thereof. Particular attention is drawn to its instancing in the field of Romantic literary production (Emerson, Byron), originally underscoring the specificities of each literary genre and expressive mode, of the narrative, lyric or theatrical nature, as well as concomitantly involving parallel notions as adapted variants within visual arts, and in such a way expressing theoretical views pertainable to Italian artworks too. Other analogous elements relevant to literary expression in the most varied cultural sectors such as philosophy, music, civilisational history (Goethe, Hegel, Kant, Wagner, Chateaubriand, Rousseau, Mme de Staël, Taine) are furnished, as well as the examples of the resonances of non-western cultures, with the objective of exploring the effect among readership bringing also to the renewal of Italian tradition.
