IntroductionPhilosophy and psychoanalysis have mutually influenced each other in many ways. Ancient Greek philosophers, Socrates and Plato were frequently cited by Freud in his works and the origins of certain psychoanalytic concepts can be found in their works. The philosophical works of Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Husserl, Sartre and many others had a significant impact on the development of psychoanalytic ideas. The intersection of philosophy and literature was best depicted in Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of the metaphysical novel.ObjectivesThe goal of this presentation is to perform a comprehensive historical review of the relationship between psychoanalysis, philosophy and literature.MethodsDifferent philosophical schools from ancient philosophy to classic German philosophy and philosophy of existentialism have been explored in their relationship with psychoanalysis and world literature. Among world literary classics, we selected only those who best represent the role of psychoanalysis in the modern literary critics and on the other hand the influence of philosophy on literature.ResultsEarly origins of the relationship between philosophy, psychoanalysis and literature can be found in the text of ancient philosophers and writers. The great Sophocles’ tragic drama Oedipus the King was the foundation for Freud’s concept of Oedipus complex. The Socratic dialogue, a technique best elaborated by his student Plato was the antecedent of modern psychotherapy. Later in history philosophical works of Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre and many others had a significant impact on the development of psychoanalytic ideas. There is a number of other philosophical fictions in the world literature written by Sartre, Camus, Kafka, Proust and many others and some of these literary woks may have characteristics of psychological novel as well. Literary critics is an important field for the application of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic theory has been always in forefront of Shakespearean studies. Marcel Proust is a writer who gave a significant contribution to modern literary studies. He wrote about the interactive process between the reader and text and emotional impact of reading. Proust recognized the similar psychological processes that we can see in psychoanalytic setting.ConclusionsThis comprehensive historical review of the relationship between psychoanalysis, philosophy and literature demonstrates that all these disciplines have much in common, particularly in their intention to approach truth from different angles. Psychoanalysis is a science and applies scientific methodology in its theory and treatment. Certain branches of psychoanalysis like Jung’s analytic psychology are sometimes closer to philosophy and art than to science. Philosophy as a humanistic discipline has always been in between science and art.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

This revision seeks to analyze the methodological intersections of contemporary art and psychoanalysis, by considering the value attributed to communication disorders by both fields. I will analyze elements of "In the Face of time: History of art and anachronism of Images" (2000), by Didi-Huberman. In addition, I will single out two texts that are crucial to the psychoanalytic method: "The Uncanny” (1919), by Freud and "Function and field of speech and Language" (1953), by Lacan. The concept of the uncanny is central to this approach, since it reveals the proximity between strangeness and familiarity. It is through the concept of the uncanny that psychoanalysis unfolds the perspective of a negative aesthetics, which is not at the service of the completeness of communication. Instead, it focuses on the cracks that paradoxically allow us to say more and to look at the latent contents of communication. Contemporary art and psychoanalysis both use non-linear communication. Research performed at their intersection is based on qualitative methodologies and seeks to analyze exemplary situations in culture, such as the discourses of an epoch and works of art. In this methodological encounter, there isn’t a single meaning to be sought. On the contrary, it is the researcher’s task to reflect on the paths that lead to the creation of a work of art, as well as on the ideals it conveys, its singularity and its relationship with culture. He can then render visible the complexity and the multiple meanings embedded in the work of art.

We present three recent research projects from China on distance psychoanalytic training and treatment. The first study explored how the internet could influence the process of psychoanalysis in three ways. First, choosing to accept online psychoanalysis is itself meaningful to the patients. Second, the internet connection itself can also be an organic component of the psychoanalysis. Third, the patients could see the real-time images of themselves during the online psychoanalysis, which could influence the analytic process. The second study found that psychoanalysis provides an important support to improve the process of individualisation among Chinese people. The results indicate that Chinese people have been through many traumatic events in the past century, such as civil wars, colonisation, and the Cultural Revolution. Through therapy, these hidden pains are expressed, understood, and healed. Psychoanalysis brings about a new dialectic relationship model: on the one hand, it is a very intimate relationship, you can talk and share everything in your life with a specific person; on the other hand, it is quite different from the traditional Chinese relationship model. They see psychoanalysis as a bridge, enabling the participants to achieve their connection with Chinese culture by using Chinese literature, art, religion, philosophy, to find their own path of individualisation. The third study surveyed 163 graduates of a distance psychoanalytic programme and found that the graduates developed a strong identification with the psychoanalytic field, with private practice clinical hours increased and fees increased. Looking forward to the future, 92% of the respondents plan to be supervisors, 78% to be analysts, 73% to be teachers, 46% to be authors, and 36% to be speakers.

This thesis explores how we might think the relation between psychoanalysis and the cultural field through Donald Winnicott's concept of the environment, seeking to bring the concept into dialogue with more “classical” strands of psychoanalytic theorizing. A substantial introduction sets out the rationale behind the thesis by reading Freud and Winnicott in relation to the “classic” and the “romantic” (Strenger 1989), or the “negative” and “positive” (Rustin 2001), in psychoanalytic thought. It goes on to outline the value of bringing these tendencies together in order to think the relationship between psychoanalysis, culture and change. The chapters which follow move from psychoanalysis as a “cultural cure” – a method and discourse drawing on and feeding into a broad conception of cultural life – towards a notion of “culture as cure” informed by Winnicott's theory of the environment. Chapter one examines Freud's refusal of the “culture”/ “civilization” distinction and considers what it means for the idea of a cultural cure. Chapter two considers whether Winnicott's thinking about “culture” ultimately prioritises the aesthetic over the political. Chapter three uses Aldous Huxley's Brave New World ([1932] 1994) to explore an analogy between totalitarianism, technology and maternal care. Chapter four turns to the series In Treatment (HBO 2008-) to think about the intersections of therapy and technology in terms of reflection and recognition. Chapter five employs Ian McEwan's Saturday (2005) as a means to reflect on the capacity of culture to cure. Ultimately, I suggest that social “cure” may require more than “good-enough” cultural forms and objects, but Winnicott's “romantic” theorization of the aesthetic, coupled with a “classic” attention to structures of power and oppression may offer a means of thinking the relationship between psychoanalysis and culture in potentially transformative ways.

This thesis seeks to identify what makes Man a person of substance whose body is sensitive. If the ego vibrates and the subject beats, the “parlêtre” resonates via the drives. We use resonance as an operative concept in order to stake how jouissance is acting the parlêtre: resonance of the body and of the language, through the “a object”. Our choice of study focuses on language disorders, not as speech dysfunction, but as agitations. Lalomania, coprolalia, echo of thought or echolalia show the direct impact of language on the body and its treatment. We are reaching hereby the language materiality: if the saying is the real weight of the subject, the “reson” is the real of the language. In this logic, schizophrenia becomes resonant madness, paranoia a reasoning madness, while autism encloses the subject in a petrified resonance. The neurotic is condemned to live again and again the Other melody. We are proposing a fundamental revisit of the practices of therapeutic mediations through art within the child clinic. The mediating object is situated at the junction between the patient’s interest and the psychologist’s desire to work with this object. He will then adopt what we call a “thoughtful position”, a particular mode of presence where he turns himself into a partner of the child. The clinician then becomes a creator of “vacuum-in form”, which serves as a resonance board (sounding board) for jouissance. As in art, the real of the “réson” is invoked to allow it to find a new destiny. By letting be, the mediation workshops are places where art becomes a possible treatment by resonating jouissance

The story of the collaboration between the psychoanalyst Dr Grace Pailthorpe and the artist Reuben Mednikoff is indeed an extraordinary one. The aim of this thesis is to throw light upon their joint research project between 1935, when they first met, and 1940, when they were expelled from the British Surrealist group with which they had been closely involved since its official launch in 1936. The project that Pailthorpe and Mednikoff plunged into just days after they first met in February 1935 focused on how art could be used as a way of curing mental problems. Paintings and drawings produced ‘automatically’ were used as a means to bring memories to a conscious level. Many personal tensions, obsessions and fears that had lain dormant and repressed were released and detailed commentaries and explanations followed every work they produced in order for the exercise to be fully therapeutic. The aim was to externalise the unconscious and reintegrate it with the conscious. Despite the fact that Pailthorpe’s work was hailed as ‘the best and most truly Surrealist’ by the leader of the Surrealist movement, André Breton, at the 1936 International Surrealist exhibition in London, which brought the movement to Britain, the couple were expelled from the British Surrealist group just four years later and moved to America into relative obscurity. After their deaths, Pailthorpe and Mednikoff’s drawings and paintings were dispersed and their commentaries never read. My thesis provides biographies of Pailthorpe and Mednikoff before they met. It analyses the work they made together, discussing the impact on their thinking not only of Surrealism but also of psychoanalytic theory, notably the work of Melanie Klein. Apart from this, the thesis also reintegrates the couple into the history of Surrealism in England.

"This theoretical study is part of a doctoral thesis and aims to investigate how the psychoanalytic thinking of Hélio Pellegrino - the Brazilian psychoanalyst, poet and writer - is structured and its ethical and political implications in the formation of psychoanalysis. We note the importance of thematic research, since there is no scientific publication that has as its object of study a systematic analysis of the author's psychoanalytic production. Furthermore, investigations of this kind contribute to the establishment of a reference bibliography on psychoanalysis in Brazil. That said, this research was developed and completed through a study of a large part of his psychoanalytic production, which is under the custody of the personal archives of the Museum of Brazilian Literature, at the Casa Rui Barbosa Foundation (FCRB). In this work, we outline some elements of the analysis found in his work, whose focus is on reflecting on the epistemological, conceptual and practical foundations of psychoanalytic theory. It has, as a constant concern, the analysis of the problems that structure Brazilian society, observed through his own reading of the Oedipus complex, the constitution of subjectivity and the social pact, in general, and in Brazil, in particular. As such, he discusses the explicit commitment of psychoanalysis in transforming the serious social problems faced by Brazil, which are related to the serious structural problems of international capitalism, and which are also reflected in the problems of the development of psychoanalytic institutions around the world."

The present work aims to address the role that psychology plays within literary works starting from a "critical" reading aimed at understanding and recognizing the psychological and in some works also psychopathological traits present within the texts. Our goal will be to present the conscious and unconscious aspects of the various characters and identify the reasons that prompted the author to create and analyze certain psychological issues and certain environmental situations. The methodology that will be used will mainly be that indicated by Professor Antonio Fusco which aims and which tends to enhance the contribution of the Author's conscious Ego, of the emotional centers and of the unconscious contents of the mind following in part the line of the psychiatrist Silvano Arieti who in one of his main works illustrates the concept of tertiary thinking and sees it as a synthesis of unconscious, endoceptual and conceptual elements [1]. The aspects that will allow you to better understand the facets of a literary work will be reading, knowledge of the author's biography and identifying with the characteristic features of the characters. On the relationship between mind, art, literature and psychoanalysis over time we have had numerous contributions from not only Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, but also many other authors. Just think of the various writers who have dealt with very important psychological and psychoanalytic themes through their novels; in the present work we will limit our attention to a psychological investigation of the work Zeno's conscience by Italo Svevo. Through the analysis of the characters and their inner life, it will be our task to be able to make the reader identify completely with the life described by the authors of the literary works. In this perspective, the psychologist will try to work alongside the traditional literary critic with the sole propose of providing a further humble investigative contribution. In conclusion, it can be said that the thread that binds psychology to many literary works is very thin.

The current study considers Sigmund Freud's theory of Psychoanalysis in Charles Dickens' novel Hard Times. It aims to analyze the character of Louisa Gradgrind from a psychoanalytic perspective. Theory of Psychoanalysis performs this task as it deals with the analysis of the human mind. Sigmund Freud is the most prominent psychologist who developed the theory of Psychoanalysis. The field is established as Freud starts treating a young woman, who suffers massive hysterical attacks in 1881. Later, Freud investigates the unconscious under normal and abnormal conditions. Furthermore, Freud develops the theory as soon as he introduces The Interpretation of Dreams to the field of Psychology. This book, which is written in 1900, marks a turning point in the field because it tackles the role of dreams, as a part of the unconscious, in revealing the mechanisms of fears, delusions and fixed ideas that are rooted in childhood experiences. Hence, the study takes the character of Louisa as an example through which Dickens psychoanalytically manifests the way in which the mentioned mechanisms work in the human mind and their impact on the other aspects of life

Psychoanalysis is a branch of science that focuses on the subconscious and unconscious aspects of human beings. “When it comes to the human soul, it is seen that almost the entire human ego is based on psychology.” (Emre, 2006: 16). The psychoanalytic literary theory is a theory that tries to reveal the unconscious and subconscious aspects of the artist in general, and is shaped on the theories of Sigmund Freud. This theory has a feature that reflects the bonds between the identity of the artist and his work. “Until Freud, the origin of human behavior was generally associated with physiology. After long studies, Freud reveals that the unconscious is as effective as physiological conditions and disorders on the basis of human behavior. (Cebeci, 2009: 72). Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, one of the important names of Turkish poetry in the Republican period, is generally known for his mystical and metaphysical poems. There are many uses in his poems that are suitable for psychoanalytic analysis. In the poems of Kısakürek, "subconscious and image, rebirth, sense of emptiness, self-complexity, struggle for existence" etc. elements are included. Key words: Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, Literary theory, Psychoanalytic.

In architecture, a teaching relationship is based on one person being devoted to the growth in the other. By looking at the discipline of psychoanalysis and the relationship between psychoanalyst and analysand we are better able to understand how particular aspects of teaching methods and the working relationship between student and teacher might be enriched. The exchange between analyst and analysand is a journey of discovery aimed at increasing self-awareness and acquiring the ability to become autonomously self-aware. The analogies between this model and the quest to find best methods to guide the emerging designer hold much potential. By looking at the concept of unsaturated questions and the analytic field we see how they might inform the design studio process and working alignment. An unsaturated question is an invitation by the analyst for the analysand to reflect and imagine without suggesting any direction they should take – neither stating that something is true nor validating its correctness. In the design studio, the instructor’s unsaturated question fosters a designer’s mind, stimulating inquiry but also delayingcertainty, relying on the student to find answers from within. We see clinicians advocate in different ways for expanding the analysand’s thinking, imagining, and feeling. In our students, we in turn see how to expand the same capacities as well as self-observation via an appreciation for process knowledge. In this technique, the therapist must wait for new ideas to emerge. It is essential that the analyst (or teacher) watch, listen, wait, and not be seduced into “working too hard” for, or in lieu of, the patient (or student) doing this themselves. By looking at unsaturated questions and the analytic field we are offered a model for interactions with emerging designers to equip them to think analytically and creatively and seek their unique, authentic voice.

The article is based on three cases of private psychoanalytic work with successful businessmen from central and northern parts of Ukraine. The research methodology was psychoanalytic theories devoted to the unconscious meanings of money and the role of money in the psychoanalytic setting, including object theory, drive theory, psychosexual development theory, narcissism theory, Oedipus complex, transference and resistance. What presents the interest of this study are the cases when those who grew up in poverty finally obtains such a desired object — money, wealth, however, something unconscious hinders this person to get satisfied by it and even to admit obtaining it. The presented clinical work was conducted as classic psychoanalysis in person with different duration: 5, 10 and 46 months. Men were asked to tell whatever comes to mind: thoughts, memories, dreams, phantasies, feelings etc. The role of psychoanalyst was to hear specific connections between patient’s stories and to analyze them together with the patient. The cases presented highlight several psychological features of young men «millionaires» who suffer from their own success. 1. Sensitivity to Father’s (real or symbolic) acceptance of their business and financial success. 2. Activation of unconscious Oedipus complex and Complex of castration because of the risk to dethrone the Father in reality, with experiences of guilt, fear and expectation of punishment. 3. Projection of their own envy, hate, wish to avenge and killing phantasies into external objects (friends, partners, psychoanalyst) with building individual defensive strategies from them. These psychological features were associated not only with suffering and psychopathological symptoms but also with impossibility to continue business development. In addition, the cases analyzed in the article show some difficulties in building business connected with the generations gap. Fathers from the USSR or the 90s teach their sons to act in the way that is not relevant for successful careers nowadays. This latent or manifested struggle between generations may be an important factor in abovementioned psychological features.

Single case studies are often used in psychoanalytic psychotherapy research to identify potential mechanisms of change. Sean Junor-Sheppard undertook such a study, which was published in the Journal of Child Psychotherapy in 2019.
