Abstract Despite the transnational growth of the prison industrial complex and the rapid expansion of the carceral state in the United States and beyond, violence against women in prisons has remained largely invisible. Reports from people inside prisons, amplified by activists on the outside and international human rights organizations documenting prison conditions, highlight rampant violations of human rights behind walls. The gendered nature of racism, which fuels the growth of the prison industrial complex, results in experiences of violence, including medical neglect, sexual abuse, lack of reproductive control, loss of parental rights, and the devastating effects of isolation, that manifest in particular ways in women’s prisons. Advocates who are challenging conditions inside increasingly are connecting with activists across the globe and organizing their efforts to resist this violence in concert with a broader resistance to carcerality overall.

The prisons are photographed at night from a distance so that the lights from the prison illuminate the landscape. The light that controls the prison population stands as an indicator of state control. The visual effect references the images from the test sites of nuclear bombs, an enormous display of technocratic power reflecting a truly destructive invasion into otherwise peaceful pastoral settings.

The global prison industrial complex was built on Black and brown women’s bodies. This economy will not voluntarily loosen its hold on the bodies that feed it. White carceral feminists traditionally encourage State punishment, while anti-carceral, intersectional feminism recognizes that it empowers an ineffective and racist system. In fact, it is built on the criminalization of women’s survival strategies, creating a “victimization to prison pipeline.” But prisons are not the root of the problem; rather, they are a manifestation of the over-policing of Black women’s bodies, poverty, and motherhood. Such State surveillance will continue unless we disrupt these powerful systems both inside and outside prisons.

Recent uprisings against racial injustice, sparked by the killings of George Floyd and others, have triggered urgent calls to overhaul the U.S. criminal “justice” system. Yet Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), the fastest-growing racial group in the country, have largely been left out of these conversations. Identifying and addressing this issue, I intercalate AAPIs into powerful, contemporary critiques of the prison industrial complex, including emergent abolitionist legal scholarship. I argue that the model minority myth, an anti-Black racial project, leads to the exclusion of AAPIs in mainstream and critical studies of crime and carcerality. I begin the intervention by critiquing the lacuna that exists within Asian American Jurisprudence, specifically the erasure of criminalized AAPIs’ voices and experiences. I then demonstrate that AAPIs are caught in the carceral web of mass incarceration by highlighting the lived experiences of AAPI youth within the school-to-prison pipeline, in addition to excavating the minimal publicly available data on AAPI prison populations. Adopting multidisciplinary and multimodal methods, I identify and analyze distinct forms of racial profiling and racialized bullying that drive AAPI students out of schools and into prisons. I pay specific attention to the criminalization of various AAPI youth subgroups as whiz kids, gang members, or terrorists. In uncovering previously unexamined dimensions of the criminal system, I stress how the exclusion of AAPIs in critical discourse obscures the actual scale of the carceral state, erases complex intra- and interracial dynamics of power, marginalizes criminalized AAPIs, and concurrently reinforces anti-Blackness and other toxic ideologies. The Article reaffirms critical race, intersectional, and abolitionist analyses of race and criminalization. It also directly links Asian American Jurisprudence to on-going abolitionist critiques of the prison industrial complex. I conclude with a proffer of abolitionist-informed solutions to the school-to-prison pipeline such as the implementation of an Ethnic Studies curriculum. Lastly, I issue a call, particularly to AAPI communities, for fiercer and more meaningful coalition-building.

Sentenced inmates in Kenya are obligated to provide labour while imprisoned. This is to reduce idleness, for punishment, to enhance prisons’ cost-efficiency, and for rehabilitation. Some scholars posit that prisoners should be paid, others state that they should not, and some others recognise that they should be paid but vary between a high or low rate of payment. In Kenya, prisoners are paid for their labour at rates espoused in Section 5 of the Earnings Scheme, Kenya Prisons Service Standing Orders, 1979. The rates range between 10 and 20 cents a day. From this pay, they are to spend on necessities while in prison, send some money to their families and save some for use after their release. However, the rates are very low and based on the purposes the wages are to serve, the meagre pay is grossly incommensurate. This paper uses the concept of prison industrial complex and the human rights theory to make a case for higher pay for prison labourers. Lastly, it suggests a revision of the earnings scheme after drawing lessons from India.

Past work related to the private prison system has focused on direct comparisons between private and public facilities, including their respective quality, cost-effectiveness, and influence on recidivism. Using 2005 United States data compiled from a prison facility census, county census, and information on number of arrests by county, I examine the effect that the presence of private prisons has on the number of adult male arrests per county. Across four regression models, I initially find a significant effect of private prisons on arrests, but find that effect becomes insignificant once county and prison controls are accounted for. This suggests that the presence of a private prison in a particular county does not necessarily lead to a significant increase or decrease of arrests in that area.

Several scholars have studied the Prison-Industrial Complex (PIC) since the late 1990s. However, there is a lack of research on how private actors profiting from the PIC, such as private prisons, are maintaining and sustaining it. This study explores how private prisons utilise different forms of power to maintain the PIC by shedding light on which real, structural, and soft powers CoreCivic and The GEO Group (the two largest private prison companies in America) are utilising to sustain the PIC. This will be done by analysing CoreCivic and The GEO group through the lens of Steven Lukes’ framework - Three Dimensions of Power. The study has been conducted as a qualitative desk and case study following abductive reasoning. The data have been analysed employing both text and discourse analysis. While the companies unquestionably use structural power, primarily through lobbying, to maintain and sustain the PIC, it can only be suggested how they have employed real and soft power. The companies use real power mainly to ensure high-profit margins. It can thus, be suggested that the companies are indirectly maintaining the PIC by simply ensuring continued profitability. Finally, the study suggests how the companies are employing soft power to upkeep the PIC. By portraying themselves to the American society in a more positive way, contradictory to how they operate, the companies ensure continued support by society, which is vital for their continued existence.

The conditions of incarceration for transgender individuals in the United States have become a concern of activists and scholars. The multiple forms of mistreatment that target transgender prisoners have been noted to include humiliation, harassment, assault, and the denial of various rights. Due to the small scale of the current body of research surrounding incarcerated trans* individuals, my research explores more detailed accounts of incarcerated trans* feminine prisoners across the United States to gather the variety of physical and psychological trauma they endure, as well as other aspects of their lives such as gender embodiment and ways in which they resist carceral impositions of gender expression and transphobia. Through qualitative research methods, my data presents subjective and comprehensive accounts of incarceration by trans* feminine prisoners and the numerous material and corporeal consequences they face in prison. I argue that my research suggests the ways in which carceral institutions and hegemonic masculinity impose power through corporeal and psychological domination over transgender prisoners. Additionally, my data displays how carceral and hypermasculine supremacy can be resisted and challenged by the ways in which transgender prisoners engage in bodily sovereignty and assert their gender identities. My research provides new information regarding incarcerated transgender populations through a larger-scale analysis that teases apart the intricacies of how incarceration impacts transgender prisoners, as well as points to strategies for how advocates can support transgender prisoners.
Les conditions dans lesquelles les individus transgenres sont incarcérés aux États-Unis sont devenues inquiétantes pour certains activistes et experts. Plusieurs formes d'abus à l'égard des prisonniers transgenres sont identifiables, dont l'humiliation, le harcèlement, les agressions, et le déni de droits variés. This dissertation provides a feminist restorative model of environmental justice that addresses the injustices found within UNICOR’s e-waste recycling operations. A feminist restorative environmental justice challenges the presupposition that grassroots efforts, law and policy, medical and scientific research, and theoretical pursuits (alone or in conjunction) are sufficient to address the emotional and relational harm of environmental injustices. To eliminate environmental harms, this model uses collaborative dialogue for interested parties to prevent environmental harm. To encourage participation, a feminist restorative model accepts many forms of knowledge and truth as ‘legitimate’ and offers an opportunity for women to share how their personal experiences of love, violence, and caring differ from men and other women and connect to larger social practices. This method of environmental justice offers opportunities for repair, reparation and reintegration that can transform perspectives on criminality, dangerous practices and structures in the PIC, and all persons who share in a restorative encounter.

The stigma of prison extends beyond the male prisoner to those who care about him, often his wife. Almost all prisoners will be released back into their communities (Hughes, 2003) and having a solid support network improves successful re-entry experiences and lowers recidivism rates for men who are released from prison (Duwe & Clark, 2013). The stigmatization that prison wives feel because they are married to an inmate, can affect how attached they feel to their community, how comfortable they feel in their workplace, and how accepted they feel by their family and friends. Financial exploitation, challenging prison policies, and visitation procedures oftentimes can make an already difficult situation even more difficult. While the number of men in prison in the United States is slowly declining, the United States remains the world leader in the number of people incarcerated (Travis, et. al., 2014). As this level of incarceration continues to affect such a large number of people (specifically women for this research) in our society, there is reason to consider a more intentional approach to focusing on recognizing the feelings and experiences of prison wives. This research includes narrative interviews of 35 women who identified as prison wives. The goal of the research was to specifically gather details on their experiences of being a prison wife and how they feel that society judged them based on the stereotype they perceived society to have. My research shows that the interviewees feel stigmatized; however, the awareness of, feelings about, and the reaction toward the stigmatization manifests differently among the two groups of prison wives that I identified: Riders and Stoppers. I have gathered details about how their experiences were often made more challenging as they tried to maintain their relationships in the midst of financial exploitation and challenging prison policies and procedures. I conclude my thesis on the relevancy of their experiences as they relate to the prison-industrial complex in our society and how this affects their interactions within the communities in which a prisoner’s wife, family members, and formerly incarcerated individuals live and work.

After the largest one-time release of federal prisoners in October 2015, community colleges were charged with retooling and preparing individuals for careers. Community colleges were designed to provide individuals an entryway into higher education. Formerly incarcerated Black males seek community colleges to assist in transitioning into their communities, society, and family life. Community colleges are a good place to provide these transitional and academic resources.

This qualitative study explored the shared experiences of 16 formerly incarcerated Black male students attending 3 California community colleges. The study provided a better understanding of their background, experience while in college, and their desire to complete college. Utilizing the Strayhorn and Johnson’s Community College Satisfaction Model as the conceptual framework, this dissertation study examined their (a) background traits At Entry of college, (b) Student engagement Within the college, and (c) overall satisfaction with the Outcomes of college.

The study used a phenomenological approach through qualitative interviews to capture the resources needed for formerly incarcerated Black male students who attended college in urban South Los Angeles, California. The interview questions were aligned with the research question, sub-questions and conceptual framework. Findings revealed 7 themes: Social Environment, Prison Industrial Complex, Perceptions of Education, Campus life, Aspirations, Activating Student Support, and Mentoring. Drawing from Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth, the study revealed participants had aspirations and used their social capital.

Findings indicate that they experienced some type of trauma and that faculty and student support services staff were key support in their community college experience. Further their experiences in prison affected their community college experience in these ways: hindered their social adaptation and maturation, prevented them from obtaining life skills, and blocked their educational attainment and continued stereotypes and stigmas. Programs like Umoja, Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) and Formerly Incarcerated Student clubs were instrumental to student persistence.

The United States has the largest population of imprisoned persons in the world. The vast majority of these individuals eventually leave prison and re-enter society, facing a number of challenges in the process. Those who are unable to successfully re-enter society run the risk of recidivating back into the prison system. Mentoring has the potential to promote successful re-entry and help offenders to get their lives back on track. Pathfinders of Tarrant County is a unique organization. Its historical position as one of the foremost "welfare to work" programs gives it unique insight into the economic struggles of at-risk individuals and families, and its existing relationships with mentors and other community organizations gives it a rich pool of resources to draw from. By helping to connect participants with community resources, Pathfinders removes quite a bit of the complexity from seeking help at a time when vulnerable people need it most. This thesis presents an overview of how Pathfinders conducts mentoring and its unique brand of social service advocacy, including the unique and not-so unique challenges that a re-entry population may have to offer.

This thesis engages in a counter-visual ethnography, using Alcatraz as a site to examine the workings of U.S. memorialization practices and visuality, specifically regarding carcerality. In examining the U.S.’s most popular site of penal tourism, this ethnography aims to provide new vantages from which to perceive of Alcatraz in relationship to the contemporary carceral moment. This is done in part by analyzing the processes of visuality through which hegemonic meanings of carcerality are circulated and consolidated at the site. The work is to at once see and unsee the ways Alcatraz is visually structured, in the process creating alternative ways to perceive of the site in its historical contingencies and relation with the wider workings of the carceral state.

The monograph is held international legal analysis of the contractual framework prior Eurasian Economic Union integration union – Customs Union. The position of the new interstate integration association – the Eurasian Economic Union – as a subject of public international law. On the basis of comparative legal analysis mapped international legal obligations, operating under the World Trade Organization, as well as the provisions of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union, including in the areas of customs regulation, industrial policies, and technical regulation. Give suggestions and recommendations for improving and promoting the integration of the former Soviet Union in the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union, taking into account Russia’s membership in the World Trade Organization, as well as the possible accession by the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Kazakhstan – Russia’s partners in the Eurasian Economic Union. This paper presents the results of DNA diagnostics of phytopathogens in the Voronezh region. DNA diagnostics was carried out step by step: isolation of total DNA from the sample by CTAB method, amplification of marker regions of phytopathogenic organisms using primers ITS1 and ITS4, electrophoretic separation of the obtained amplicons in 2% agarose gel followed by staining with ethidium bromide, determination of the nucleotide sequence of the amplified loci ABI Prism 310. The study identified the following plant diseases: Sphaeropsis sapinea, Rhizoctonia solani, Cladosporium herbarum. Along with this, we identified the Neocatenulostroma pathogen, which had not previously been found in the territories under its jurisdiction. This disease cannot be determined by phenological signs. The degree of infection by pathogens ranged from 15 to 40%. At present, the problem of protecting plants from diseases is especially urgent. It has been established that the greatest damage to forestry activities is caused by fungal and infectious diseases. At the same time, among phytopathogens, about 97% are fungal infections, 2% are bacterial and 1% are viral.

Fault detection and identification in mechatronic systems with complex interdependencies between subsystems is a very active research area. Various alternative quantitative and qualitative methods have been proposed in the literature for fault identification on industrial processes, making it difficult for researchers and industrial practitioners to choose a method for their application. The Functional Failure Identification and Propagation (FFIP) framework has been proposed in past research for risk assessment of early complex system designs. FFIP is a versatile framework which has been extended in prior work to automatically evaluate sets of alternative system designs, perform sensitivity analysis, and event trees generation from critical event scenario simulation results. This paper’s contribution is an FFIP extension, used to generate the training and testing data sets needed to develop fault detection systems based on data driven machine learning methods. The methodology is illustrated with a case study of a generic nuclear power plant where a fault or the location of a fault within the system is identified. Two fault detection methods are compared, based on an artificial neural network and a decision tree. The case study results show that the decision tree was more meaningful as a model and had better detection accuracy (97% success in identification of fault location).

The flowfield of a complex three dimensional radial inlet for an industrial pipeline centrifugal compressor has been experimentally determined on a half scale model. Based on the experimental results, inlet guide vanes have been designed to correct pressure and swirl angle distribution deficiencies. The unvaned and vaned inlets are analyzed with a commercially available fully 3D viscous Navier-Stokes code. Since experimental results were available prior to the numerical study, the unvaned analysis is considered a postdiction while the vaned analysis is considered a prediction. The computational results of the unvaned inlet have been compared to the previously obtained experimental results. The experimental method utilized for the unvaned inlet is repeated for the vaned inlet and the data has been used to verify the computational results. The paper will discuss experimental, design and computational procedures, grid generation, boundary conditions, and experimental versus computational methods. Agreement between experimental and computational results is very good, both in prediction and postdiction modes. The results of this investigation indicate that CFD offers a measurable advantage in design, schedule and cost and can be applied to complex, three dimensional radial inlets.

A full size combustor for a coal-fueled industrial gas turbine engine has been designed and fabricated. The design is based on extensive work completed through one-tenth scale combustion tests. Testing of the combustion hardware will be completed with a high pressure air supply in a combustion test facility before the components are integrated with the gas turbine engine. The combustor is a two-staged, rich-lean design. Fuel and air are introduced in the primary combustion zone where the combustion process is initiated. The primary zone operates in a slagging mode inertially removing coal ash from the gas stream. Four injectors designed for coal-water mixture (CWM) atomization are used to introduce the fuel and primary air. In the secondary combustion zone additional air is injected to complete the combustion process at fuel lean conditions. The secondary zone also serves to reduce the gas temperatures exiting the combustor. Between the primary and secondary zones is a Particulate Rejection Impact Separator (PRIS). In this device much of the coal ash that passes from the primary zone is inertially separated from the gas stream. The two-staged combustor along with the PRIS have been designated as the combustor island. All of the combustor island components are refractory lined to minimize heat loss. Fabrication of the combustor has been completed. The PRIS is still under construction. The combustor hardware is being installed at the Caterpillar Technical Center for high pressure test evaluation. The design, test installation, and test plan of the full size combustor island are discussed.

Fuel and air are introduced in the primary combustion zone where the combustion process is initiated. The primary zone operates in a slagging mode inertially removing coal ash from the gas stream. Four injectors designed for coal-water mixture (CWM) atomization are used to introduce the fuel and primary air. In the secondary combustion zone additional air is injected to complete the combustion process at fuel-lean conditions. The secondary zone also serves to reduce the gas temperatures exiting the combustor. The combustor has operated at test pressures of 7 bars with 600K inlet temperature. Tests have been completed to set the air flow split and to map the performance of the combustor as characterized by pollutant emissions, coal ash separation, and temperature profile. Test results with a comparison to subscale test results are discussed. The test results have indicated that the combustor operates at combustion efficiencies above 98% and with pollutant emissions below design goals.

Swirling flows are widely used in industrial burners and gas turbine combustors for flame stabilization. Several prior studies have shown that these flames exhibit complex dynamics under near-blowoff conditions, associated with local flamelet extinction and alteration in the vortex breakdown flow structure. These extinction events are apparently due to the local strain rate irregularly oscillating above and below the extinction strain rate values near the attachment point. In this work, global, temporally resolved and detailed spatial measurements were obtained of hydrogen/methane flames. Supporting calculations of extinction strain rates were also performed using detailed kinetics. It is shown that flames become unsteady (or local extinctions happen) at a nearly constant extinction strain rate for different hydrogen/methane mixtures. Based upon analysis of these results, it is suggested that classic Damkohler number correlations of blowoff are, in fact, correlations for the onset of local-extinction events, not blowoff itself. Corresponding Mie scattering imaging of near-blowoff flames also was used to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of holes along the flame that are associated with local extinction.

Abstract Despite their excellent specific mechanical properties magnesium-based alloys are not widely used in the industry due to their high affinity to oxygen. Given the need for lightweight design, there are increasing efforts to replace high density materials by magnesium. One way to cope with the high oxygen affinity of magnesium is the use of thermally sprayed anti-corrosion coatings. However, conventional thermal coating processes have various process-related limitations. A case in point is coating of complex geometries and internal coatings with small diameters that often cannot be realized by conventional processes. Due to the changed process order some of the limitations of conventional coating methods can be resolved by the transplantation of thermally sprayed coatings. This method is a composite casting process for the coating of die cast components, where the thermally sprayed coating is applied to the corresponding area of the mold prior to the casting process. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of transplanted thermally sprayed coatings with corrosion protection properties to conventional coatings deposited by thermal spraying and to discuss the ramifications with respect to industrial applications.

Abstract Turbulent particle-laden flows are of high interest due to their presence in many industrial applications. High Reynolds number flows containing solid particles, create complex flows and erosive environments. The effect that the particles have on the turbulence of the surrounding fluid is referred to in the literature as turbulence modulation. This is an area of research in which there is still much to learn to enable a deeper understanding of the physics behind these complex flows. Data that would be of particular usefulness are at higher Reynolds numbers (Re ≥ 100,000), and dense loadings (ΦV ≥ 1%). In this work, turbulent particle-laden flow through a simplified industrial geometry was studied at an upper Reynolds number of 115,000 and particle loadings up to 5% by weight/volume (specific gravity = 1) to address these needs. The flow within a tee junction with the 90-degree branch closed-off downstream was studied. This is analogous to a duct flow but with an exposed region of fluid at the location of the closed-off branch. Super absorbent particles were used as the solid phase, which became index-matched and neutrally buoyant upon saturation with water. Data were acquired using 2-D planar particle image velocimetry (PIV) along the center span of the tunnel. Mean and root-mean-square (rms) velocities were calculated for the fluid phase. Particle loadings studied were 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5 at flow Reynolds numbers of 11,500 and 115,000. Velocity contour plots are presented to provide a macro description of the flow. Three horizontal positions within the shear layer region were selected for profile comparison (x* = −0.45, 0, 0.45). Prior literature suggested that the particles would attenuate the turbulence, however, the result showed no single trend in the current data. The mean velocities were nominally unaffected by loading for a respective Reynolds number case. Turbulence modulation of the flow was found to be sensitive to the Reynolds number, as at x* = −0.45 weakening of the rms was observed in the low Reynolds number case and strengthening in the high Reynolds number case for the same particle loading in the same region of the geometry.

In this work the flow regime within a generic turbine cooling system is investigated numerically. The main objective is to validate the performance of various turbulence models with different complexity by comparing the numerical results with experimental data. To maximize surface heat transfer rates, present-day cooling systems of high pressure turbines have highly complex shapes generating high turbulence levels and flow separations. These flow structures lead to higher requirements of CFD-techniques for sufficient prediction. To simulate complex flows in the industrial design process, Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) techniques are applied instead of computationally expensive LES and DNS simulations. Therefore, higher order turbulence models are necessary to predict flow field and heat transfer performance in such complex motion. The DLR standard flow solver for turbomachinery flows, TRACE, is used to solve the RANS equations. Four turbulence models have been analysed: the one equation model of Spalart and Allmaras, the two equation k – ω model of Wilcox, the two equation k – ω SST model of Menter and the anisotropy resolving Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress model (EARSM) of Hellsten. The investigated cooling geometry consists of a two-pass smooth channel with a 180 degree bend. At the DLR institute of propulsion technology PIV measurements in a rotating cooling channel test bed for Rotation numbers up to 0.1 have been performed. This work uses the experimental data for Re = 50,000 and Ro = 0 without rotation for comparison. For all models adiabatic and diabatic calculations have been performed. In order to accurately apply the turbulence models, a study concerning the turbulent boundary conditions has been performed prior to the calculations. The results obtained through RANS simulations are presented in comparison with the experiments along planes in the flow direction and in the orthogonal direction to study the velocity field, the shape and size of the separation bubbles and the wall shear stress. The EARSM predicts the flow field overall more accurately with improved agreement between all relevant parameters compared to the other models. The diabatic simulations reflect the adiabatic results. However, it can be noticed that higher complexity in turbulence modelling is related to increased heat transfer. Our work confirms the EARSMs ability to predict complex flow structures better than the more elementary approaches.

High Grain Protein Content (GPC) of wheat is important for improved nutritional value and industrial quality. However, selection for this trait is limited by our poor understanding of the genes involved in the accumulation of protein in the grain. A gene with a large effect on GPC was detected on the short arm of chromosome 6B in a Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides accession from Israel (DIC, hereafter). During the previous BARD project we constructed a half-million clones Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) library of tetraploid wheat including the high GPC allele from DIC and mapped the GPC-B1 locus within a 0.3-cM interval. Our long-term goal is to provide a better understanding of the genes controlling grain protein content in wheat. The specific objectives of the current project were to: (1) complete the positional cloning of the GPC-B1 candidate gene; (2) characterize the allelic variation and (3) expression profile of the candidate gene; and (4) validate this gene by using a transgenic RNAi approach to reduce the GPC transcript levels. To achieve these goals we constructed a 245-kb physical map of the GPC-B1 region. Tetraploid and hexaploid wheat lines carrying this 245-kb DIC segment showed delayed senescence and increased GPC and grain micronutrients. The complete sequencing of this region revealed five genes. A high-resolution genetic map, based on approximately 9,000 gametes and new molecular markers enabled us to delimit the GPC-B1 locus to a 7.4-kb region. Complete linkage of the 7.4-kb region with earlier senescence and increase in GPC, Zn, and Fe concentrations in the grain suggested that GPC-B1 is a single gene with multiple pleiotropic effects. The annotation of this 7.4-kb region identified a single gene, encoding a NAC transcription factor, designated as NAM-B1. Allelic variation studies demonstrated that the ancestral wild wheat allele encodes a functional NAC transcription factor whereas modern wheat varieties carry a non-functional NAM-B1 allele. Quantitative PCR showed that transcript levels for the multiple NAMhomologues were low in flag leaves prior to anthesis, after which their levels increased significantly towards grain maturity. Reduction in RNA levels of the multiple NAMhomologues by RNA interference delayed senescence by over three weeks and reduced wheat grain protein, Zn, and Fe content by over 30%. In the transgenic RNAi plants, residual N, Zn and Fe in the dry leaves was significantly higher than in the control plants, confirming a more efficient nutrient remobilization in the presence of higher levels of GPC. The multiple pleiotropic effects of NAM genes suggest a central role for these genes as transcriptional regulators of multiple processes during leaf senescence, including nutrient remobilization to the developing grain. The cloning of GPC-B1 provides a direct link between the regulation of senescence and nutrient remobilization and an entry point to characterize the genes regulating these two processes. This may contribute to their more efficient manipulation in crops and translate into food with enhanced nutritional value. The characterization of the GPC-B1 gene will have a significant impact on wheat production in many regions of the world and will open the door for the identification of additional genes involved in the accumulation of protein in the grain.
