Анотація:
In order to explore the influence of slide stroke curves on drawing process and solve the problems of springback and serious thickness thinning during forming, the deep drawing processes of box shaped part based on the conventional mechanical press and servo press were simulated. The springback and thickness variation of box shaped part by different slide stroke curves were obtained. It shows that comparing with the deep drawing with conventional mechanical press, the springback of drawn workpiece decreases by pressure-keeping drawing; the maximum thickness thinning ratio of drawn workpiece is smaller by staged drawing, and the distribution of workpiece thickness is more uniform.

Анотація:
Friction is generated between a press tool and a material during the inflow of material in an automotive press drawing process. Currently, there is deficienttechnical information on such tool-material friction properties. This study is accordingly aimed to understand friction characteristics by investigating them from drawing variables in the press deep-drawing process for steel plates of 590MPa grade and above that are recently being applied for the reduction of weight and improvement of safety of automobiles. The drawing variables in this study are blank holder holding pressure, drawing velocity, and tool surface treatment, which are tested and applied for stamping analysis. The results showed that for holding pressure and drawing velocity, friction coefficient decreases as holding pressure and drawing velocity increases. In case of friction properties according to tool surface treatment, friction coefficient is lower in surface-treated tools compared to non-surface-treated tools, which verifies the need for surface treatment when fabricating press tools. In addition, this study ascertained the need to have a stamping analysis that considered actual drawing variables when analyzingforming by verifying the results of drawing simulations after applying the experimented friction coefficient in the stamping analysis.

Анотація:
At present, most studies on magnesium alloy sheet forming were carried under hydraulic press. In this paper, differential temperature forming of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet under the J23-63 mechanical press were carried out. Through an orthogonal test about studying the influence of process parameters on AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet drawing, some conclusions were drawn, which are: the influence of drawing temperature on sheet forming is the biggest, then the drawing die clearance, and lubricant respectively; the optimal process parameters combination is drawing temperature of 310°C, 1.10t die clearance, and 8mm die radius in this test.

In this paper, AZ31B drawing test was carried out under the mechanical press with crank-slide mechanism. The influence of drawing temperature and drawing clearance on the wall thickness of AZ31B drawn parts was studied through testing. Some conclusions were drawn, which are: with the increase of drawing temperature, minimum wall thickness ( Tmin ) and maximum wall thickness ( Tmax ) of AZ31B drawn parts substantially decreased; with the increase of drawing clearance, Tmin and Tmax of AZ31B drawn parts increased.

Анотація:
To explore the influence of slide stroke curves on deep drawing and solve the problems of cracking and wrinkling during drawing, the deep drawing processes of box shaped part with the conventional mechanical press and servo press were simulated, respectively. The variation rules of cracking and wrinkling for box shaped part by different slide stroke curves were obtained. It shows that the qualified parts can be obtained more easily when drawing with servo presses by decreasing the rotational speed of servo motor at the forming stage due to its variability; drawing cycle can be shorten effectively by adjusting the variable displacement-velocity curves of servo press.

Анотація:
Manufacturing process using servo press machines have been highlighted in car manufacturers and other industries in Japan. It is necessary to establish an appropriate press working conditions for manufacturing highly accurate products with great extra value. Our aim is to investigate into effects of variable BHF (blank holding force) on press formability, comparing to using a conventional press machine. In this study, FEM analyses of deep drawing process using a variable BHF system has been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of a servo die cushion on formability. According to experimental results obtained with a servo die cushion, it is found that maximum load subjected to dies was reduced by 11.8 %, when using a servo press with a servo die cushion comparing to a conventional press.

Анотація:
The design of the press tool is one of the practice courses that teach the skill in designing tool forming and cutting the product from the plate. The quality of the design is determined by the ability to apply the design procedure. Competence is widely applied in the design of drawing prints with a certain level of product complexity. Practice activity of designing drawing drawing of students of Engineering Design Program of Mechanical Polytechnic of State of Bangka Belitung done conventionally, where only using drawing table or computerized depiction software then printed on drawing paper. This results in frequent errors in student design drawings. To overcome these problems required drawing prints that can form a specific product such as ashtrays, with the aim of producing a construction drawing print that can be applied and utilized in the teaching of press tool design. The method of making this tool consists of data collection, concept making, tool design, machining & testing. Based on the results of trials that have been done, carried out on 10 blank by using a lubricant in the form of vegetable oil. Of the 10 experiments the formation showed that the central pool of ashtrays can be perfectly formed, while 4 pieces of the grooves on the ear of the ashtray have not been formed well where there are still folds or curves that are not regular.

Within deep drawing processes, welding represents an innovative approach to optimising the branched process chains which entail uneconomic process steps in production and transport lines. Previous applications of thermal joining processes in presses required a downstream process step for joining standardised functional elements such as nuts. Within the scope of this publication, a weldable tool system is presented which offers the possibility of welding a deep drawing component to an automatically added non-standardised holder in a single-step deep drawing process without additional dwell time in the bottom dead point. In order to realise this innovative tool system, the interdependencies of deep drawing and projection welding are considered to enable a splash-free welding on flat and curved component areas, such as the rounding of a punch edge. Based on experimental research a special concept for the tool kinematics of welding electronics is drawn up which is based on press kinematics. In addition, this article also deals with electric insulation and the forming forces which have an impact on the welding electrodes integrated into the active surface of the forming tool. Thus, the joining process becomes independent from the type of press.

The private and public domains are usually regarded as a dichotomy: what is in one is not in the other. There can be many reasons for intrusions by the news media into the private lives of people. This thesis assesses the extent to which celebrity is a useful conduit for understanding why the media intrudes into people’s private lives and the extent to which celebrity affects any public interest justification for doing so. In essence: does celebrity make a difference in press intrusions into the private lives of others, or is it just one of many factors. The private lives of celebrities have been subject to invasion by the press for many years, while the conceptual definition of privacy has been fiercely debated by academics and lawyers. In 2011, as a direct consequence of the revelation that the News of the World had illegally accessed murder victim Milly Dowler’s voicemail during an active police investigation into her disappearance, the first part of the Leveson Inquiry was launched in order to examine the relationship between the British press and the public, the police and politicians. The significance of the Leveson Inquiry on public life and the media and political spheres means that an analysis of press intrusions into the private lives of both celebrities and those, like the Dowler family, who were unlucky enough to fall under scrutiny due to tragic events, is essential in understanding the relationship between celebrity, privacy and the press in twenty-first century England. This thesis utilises an observation study of the Leveson Inquiry public hearings from the Royal Courts of Justice, and the resulting evidence, to investigate the impact of celebrity on the nature and extent of press intrusion into the privacy of celebrities, and how it differs in the cases of noncelebrities who become of interest to the media. The thesis concludes that the element of celebrity has a major impact on press intrusion into the private lives of individuals regardless of their personal status, as ordinary individuals are targeted due to their proximity to a celebrity, or as a result of being caught up in extraordinary circumstances. However, social media platforms are threatening the role of the press in revealing private information about individuals to the general public, as both traditional celebrities and ‘internet micro-celebrities’ communicate directly with global audiences.

Анотація:
The project looks for a solution to optimalization of rotational deep drawn part with flange production. It deals with sewerage drain, which is produced by conventional tool to two deep drawing operations. The used material is austenitic Cr-Ni stainless steel 1.4301. Suitability of this material for deep drawing operations was considered by means of the tensile test and the Erichsen test. On the bases of these results, serializability of production and theoretic relationships for determination of number of deep drawing operations, it was decided upon one operation serial production, by conventional tool without attenuation thickness of sheet. Production will take place on hydraulic press Dieffenbacher PO250 with magnetic tool fastening. The deep drawing tool was designed and constructed. For series of 2 000 units per year the rate of return was calculated after 4,7 years, while using the punch from the current second deep drawing operation it was calculated after 3,4 years.

The aim of this thesis is to propose and design the production of the cap. The cap is welded to the tube of roller regal and is used for closing the tube. They together make a fixed assembly. There is a bearing molded from inside the cap and shaft passes through the center of the cap. The main function of whole assembly is to rotate the tube around its own axis. The cap will made from deep - drawing steel DC04 with a thickness of 2 mm. After consideration various possible variants for the cap production, there was chosen deep drawing without reduction of thickness as the most profitable technology. The shape of the component was modified from the technology review. There is proposed a tool that will be used for production the caps. The caps will be produced within three operations: the first two operations form a central cup and the third operation makes the final shape of the cap. Drawings for the tool are created and delivered as part of this thesis. Based on the necessary force and work calculation, it was chosen eccentric press machine S 160 E from the ŠMERAL company. With the 25 000 series, the costs of production one piece are 51,65 CZK.

The project elaborated design of technology production of the trailer connecting joint from the deep drawing sheet iron 11 320. Pursuant to of the literary pursuit a problem of the deep drawing and calculation was designed progressive tool concatenate four operations. The lower ejectors are using for ejecting components. The drawing instrument especially made of non-standardised components and it is designed for use on a hydraulic press CTH 250, with nominal tensile force 250 kN. Drawing punch and drawing die are produced from alloyed instrumental steel 19 436 heat-worked according to drawing documentation. The technical and economical evaluation was focused on the forming cost, which is 2 922 893 CZK in total.

The thesis deals with the design of the upper part of the gas tank. Taking into account the shape and dimensions, the solution was chosen the most advantageous drawing technology without a thinning of 1 mm thick DC04 steel. The solution took account of the requirements of the contracting authority and selected the production for one operation. However, the simulation proved inappropriateness of the solution, so the procedure was modified to two operation proces. At the first stroke, a larger part of the body will be created, and in the other, a calibration of the cut-out dimensions will occur. For the first operation, the design of the tool kit, including drawing documentation for the CTH 250 press, was elaborated.

Au cours d’une carrière amorcée sous le Second Empire et achevée dans les années vingt, Albert Robida (1848-1926) participa à cent sept périodiques et illustra quatre-vingt-quatorze livres. Il acquit une autonomie créatrice par la fondation, en 1880, de son propre journal humoristique, La Caricature, et par la publication de quarante-sept ouvrages écrits et illustrés de sa main. Il exprime, en tant que dessinateur la forte tension entre tradition et modernité palpable dans le monde parisien de l’édition au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles. Sa notoriété actuelle est principalement due au premier de ses romans d’anticipation Le Vingtième Siècle (1883). Par cette forme originale, Robida livre une satire de son époque, tout en proposant la vision dystopique d’une société régie par la mécanisation. Dans la perspective de l’histoire de l’art, on s’interrogera sur la pratique graphique traditionnelle défendue par Robida, qui pourtant avait si bien entrevu, dès le début des années 1880, le potentiel médiatique des images animées. Afin de résoudre ce paradoxe, sa production graphique a été analysée selon de trois axes de recherche complémentaires. Le premier concerne les mécanismes de diffusion de ses dessins dans le secteur de l’édition, que ce soit à travers la presse, les livres ou les estampes. Le deuxième axe s’intéresse à la singularité de Robida dans la fin de siècle. Il analyse les modes de créations qui lui permirent de se dégager des contraintes inhérentes au monde de l’édition par la mise au point de son propre style de caricature, par l’auto-illustration et par sa participation aux livres de bibliophilie. Le troisième axe cerne les limites que Robida fixait au métier de dessinateur par une enquête orientée vers la peinture, la photographie et le cinéma
During his career from the Second Empire to 1926, Albert Robida (1848-1926) took an active part in a hundred and seven newspapers and illustrated ninety-four books. He acquired a creative self-sufficiency by founding, in 1880, his own satirical newspaper, La Caricature, and by publishing forty-seven works which he himself wrote and illustrated. His career and his drawings express the strong tension between tradition and modernity in the Parisian world of edition from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. His present fame is mainly due to Le Vingtième siècle (1883), the first of his works of science-fiction. Through this new form, Robida renders a satire of his time, while offering a dystopic vision of a society run by mechanization. Although he foresaw the media possibilities in animated pictures in the early 1880's, he defended his traditional graphic practice which will be examined in the art history angle. To resolve this paradox, his graphic production has been analyzed according to three further axes of research. The first one is about the distribution of his pictures in the publishing sector through newspapers, books or etchings. The second one is focused on the peculiarity of Robida in the “fin de siècle”. It analyses the creative forms which allowed him to free himself from the constraints connected to the publishing sector by focusing on his own style as a caricaturist, on his auto-illustrations and on his participation in books on bibliophilia. The third axis centers on the limits which, as an illustrator, Robida set to his own profession by a research directed towards painting, photography and cinema

Анотація:
This thesis deals with the proposal of an oil filter body manufacture. The oil filter body is a rotational part made of DC02 deep drawing steel. With respect to the material, geometry and the size of the production, a deep drawing technology which does not consider wall thinning, was chosen. It was decided about necessity of five drawing operations. Suitable presses for a notching line and the very drawing were selected. Next part of the thesis is given to the design of the rolling tool construction. A drawing die for the first operation is described in details, including the controls and drawings. The economic part compares variants with the requirements of monthly production of 50 000, 180 000 and 350 000 pieces respectively. Due to the economic study, the production of 180 000 pieces per month was chosen.

The thesis handle design of part of anemostat in size of series 15000 pcs/year. Due to conus shape and dimensions of part was chosen out of quantity of manufacturing processes a technology of deep drawing without a thinnig of 1mm thick DC04 steel. The resulting solution is progressive tool which concatenate four operations of deep drawing process. The drawing tool make use of standardised components. The design contain progressive tool including drawing documentation. Hydraulic press CTH 400 with nominal force 4000 kN is used for mentioned procedure.

JURČA Jan: The manufacturing of sheet metal part by deep draw technology. Thesis of Master´s Studies, the 5th Year of Study, the School-year 2008/2009, The Institute of Manufacturing Technology, Department of Machining, FSI VUT Brno.The thesis deals with the project of manufacturing the part of the car body – the fifth door by deep draw technology. The material is zinc-coated sheet metal HX220YD EN 10292. Mechanical properties and suitability of the material are evaluated by mechanical tests. The structure of the material is evaluated by metalography scratch pattern. The analysis of draw process and manufacturability of the part is made by calculations and AutoForm software. The production line, necessary machinery and construction solution of draw tool for the manufacturing the part are determined. Last section deals with economical evaluation of the production.

AbstractCoworking and coworking spaces have proliferated over the last decade, and research has shown how these flexible, shared workspaces provide crucial resources for freelance and self-employed workers. This chapter aims to understand how care is practised in and through coworking spaces. Drawing on interviews with female hosts in different spaces across Europe, we apply Joan Tronto’s ethics of care framework (Tronto in Moral boundaries: A political argument for an ethic of care. Routledge [43]; Tronto in Caring democracy: Markets, equality, and justice. NYU Press [44]) to analyze caring practices in coworking spaces. This chapter adds to the literature on how coworking hosts and community managers provide care to “maintain, continue, and repair” (Fisher and Tronto in Work and identity in women’s lives. SUNY Press [18], p. 40) community and the hospitable atmosphere in coworking spaces across Europe.

A minor but frequent editorialist and contributor to the Fascist press over the 1930s, Odon Por reached the apex of his visibility when he joined Ezra Pound in the attempt to promote policies based on Major Douglas’s Social Credit and Silvio Gesell’s Stamp Scrip. Drawing on various archival sources, the chapter reconstructs Por’s international background, the political protections that allowed him to occupy comfortable positions in the regime’s institutions, and his ideological itinerary from revolutionary syndicalism to guild socialism and from here to a fascism which was more imagined than real. His case is a typical illustration of the appeal that the Italian corporatist model held for anti-capitalist movements in inter-war Europe.

AbstractThe study analyzes covers of contemporary Polish right-wing magazines and shows that many of them use historical images for political purposes. Referring to the terminology of Antoon de Baets, the author argues that the images on the covers “abuse history,” i.e., use history in an intentionally deceptive way. The main technique of abusing history is montage. Historical motifs are combined with each other either on particular covers or between them. Although originally montage was widely used as means of avant-garde and leftist art, it is now a common method of designing conservative and right-wing imagery. Drawing on the premises of the pictorial turn, the author further claims that the covers shape social and political realities. They are not mere illustrations but powerful actors of the public discourse that promote a view on history in which whole nations are either heroes or traitors, good or bad. Therefore, they contribute to the simplified and even falsified perspective on the past.

AbstractThis chapter defines the force of planter sovereignty in the circa 30-year period in which Hawai‘i witnessed the demographic, topographical, and political ramifications associated with the formation of a migrant labor-based plantation complex. Complementing recent research on indigenous sovereignty in the islands, it applies the analytical prisms of plantation polity and racialization to interrogate planter-ruling elite mediation in the contingent transition from a native- to migrant-dominated plantation labor force. Drawing on close engagement with the institutional, discursive, and operational archives of planters in Hawai‘i in the decades preceding US annexation, including Kingdom government records, an emergent Hawai‘i-based planter press, and planter correspondence, this chapter emphasizes how the plantation and planter networking figured in the contested and variegated state formation processes of late nineteenth-century Hawai‘i.

AbstractThis chapter conceptualizes self-help groups as communities of practice where learning citizenship practices experienced. Qualitative research through interviews and focus group discussions was employed for data collection in Mpwapwa District, Rural Tanzania. Drawing on (Lave and Wenger, Situated Learning: Legitimate Peripheral Participation, Cambridge University Press, 1991) notion of situated learning through legitimate peripheral participation in communities of practice, I analyze how participants describe their learning, and how they draw connections between being a good member in a group and exercising good citizenship more broadly. Findings show that participants learn to achieve main goal of development and care for others in various ways including participation in joint activities, imitating others and trial and error. A good member of the group is perceived as a good citizen, responsible in development of oneself and to others. Therefore, groups address challenges in their settings and portray a kind of citizenship that needs attention in development interventions.

AbstractInteragency collaboration is increasingly prevalent in welfare contexts due to the current pressure for integrating different professional domains around desired effects on citizens’ life and well-being. In the context of prison service this is equally important, due to the complexity in the constellation of actors that come into contact with a citizen before, during and after imprisonment. Drawing on a combination of neo-institutional theory (DiMaggio & Powell in The New Institutionalism in Organizational Analysis. University of Chicago Press, Chicago, IL, 1991) and sensemaking theory (Weick in Sensemaking in Organizations. Sage, Thousand Oaks, CA, 1995), we investigate an example of how “the Norwegian import model” enables actors to make sense of their work in a way that enables a practice of “living with” contradictions. Based on empirical data produced as part of the COLAB project, this chapter analyses the interagency collaboration of staff and management in a Norwegian low-security prison where professionals target the inmates’ education, health care, sports & leisure, faith and social services. The chapter identifies some key local practices, which underpin the collaboration across sectors and professions. These three practices are narrative practices, practices related to tools and documents, and shared meetings.

AbstractThis chapter, written not too long after the March 2019 US Midwestern floods, responds to those floods and the connective practices of care they created. Inspired by Gough’s (Shaking the treed, making a rhizome: Towards a nomadic geophilosophy of science education. Educational Philosophy and Theory, 38(5), 625–645, 2006) call for more literary and artistic modes of representation in science education, this chapter offers an affect-rich account of the flood and learning to live in the Anthropocene. Drawing on a trip to the area in July 2019, newspaper articles, social media, and discussions with family and friends, this account follows the watery we’s—the connections between humans, nonhumans, and so much more—that the flood collected and the affective practices of care that the flood continues to generate. To do this work, I first situate the 2019 Midwestern flood, with a focus on Eastern Nebraska. Then, I share how I put Puig de la Bellacasa’s (Matters of care: Speculative ethics in more than human worlds. University of Minnesota Press, 2017) conception of care to work by examining moments that created different affect-rich currents in practices of care. This responsive work, told in more artistic modes of representation, aims to create resonating moments for careful thoughts about learning to live in the Anthropocene.

Servo presses providing flexible ram motions are extensively developed nowadays; the merit of such presses is the capability of generating versatile punch motions to fulfill the stamping. This paper studies a cup-shaped drawing process using a servo press. The aim of this research is to study the effect of the forming speed on preventing the cracks and wrinkles in drawing. A finite element method (FEM) software package—ABAQUS®, is utilized to predict the distribution of displacement stress, strain of the work material in drawing. Crack (related to thinning behavior) and wrinkle are two indices of the drawing failure criteria in simulation. An optimal forming speed could be estimated by simulation. The optimal forming speed would cause the maximum limit drawing ratio which is beneficial to prevent drawing failure. The analytical results were verified experimentally. The results show that the predicted drawing speed was consistent with the real experiment and simulation.

Servo actuated presses can provide maximum pressing force at any slide position in the same manner that hydraulic presses do, while offering several benefits in terms of precision, energy conversion efficiency and simplicity due to their lack of hydraulic circuitry and oil. Several press builders have developed electric-spindle actuated presses; however, issues relating to multi-axis architecture have been neglected. The present study proposes an innovative method of avoiding overconstrained architecture by implementing a kinematic mechanism that connects multiple servo axes to one slide. Servo axis design is developed by creating a dynamic model of a kinematic chain composed of a servo-motor, gearbox reducer and ball screw transmission. A study of a biaxial industrial servo press prototype with non-overconstrained architecture, currently under construction, is presented as proof of concept. It is shown that such a non-overconstrained multi-axis press can be constructed from commercially available components, achieving high energy efficiency at high load with relatively simple construction.

This paper addresses the kinematics design and analysis of a special class of mechanical presses used for deep drawing and ironing process. The key design objectives are to obtain a longer stroke and a quicker punch return. From the kinematics equations, it is shown that the horizontal quick return mechanism exhibits the preferred characteristics. The behavior of the press is studied based on the placement of the links. The kinematics constraints are observed and the placement of press components to achieve better performance is summarized.

The scientific paper proposes a method to analyze and optimize the drawing press and the deep drawing process with a virtual model. It focuses on hydraulic multi-point die cushions since they offer a wide range of possible adjustments and a high potential to increase production quality and efficiency. The operator can apply individual die cushion cylinder forces to the blankholder which enables the control of the forming process and manual die spotting can theoretically be reduced to a minimum. Utilizing the virtual model can improve the drawing press’ behavior and significantly reduce the set-up time for drawing presses during try-out of new tools or when tool sets are transferred to a different machine. The paper presents a system simulation model of a deep drawing press including its mechanics, hydraulics, and control. It serves as a basis for developing an advanced control system which improves system performance with potentially higher slide speeds, and therefore, a more efficient production. Another aspect in the paper is the development of a coupled simulation consisting of the machine model and a process model. This includes the elasto-static as well as the dynamic behavior of the drawing press and allows for simulations with the highest possible level of detail. The model was used to determine individual set forces for the die cushion cylinders which allowed for the production of sound quality parts without manual die spotting.

A fuzzy inference system with an associated database was developed in order to determine the forming conditions required to obtain the objective height of a drawn cup using magnesium alloy sheet. The results from both experimental and finite element analyses (FEA) have been used for constructing the database which contains information on the forming conditions used and the resultant height of the drawn cup. A case study utilizing circular-cup deep-drawing was used to test the inference system, whereby experimental results for the height of the drawn cup using specific forming conditions (temperature, blank size and blank holding force) agreed with those predicted using the inference system. This confirms the validity of the inference system. Furthermore, a learning method was developed in order to improve the system using further experimental results, the FEA results and a fuzzy algorithm. The experimental analysis showed good agreement between the required objective height and the experimentally measured height of the drawn cup.

The objective of the study is to outline the vision of the Russian-Ukrainian war in Renmin Ribao, the main newspaper of the People’s Republic of China. The source base of the research is the content of the Renmin Ribao website during 2022 in English, Spanish, French, Russian, German, Italian, and Portuguese languages. The material was selected using the keywords «Ukraine», «Russia» (and other derivatives), analyzed using induction, vocabulary analysis, classification analysis, and content analysis. Renmin Ribao rarely uses the term “war” to refer to events in Ukraine, resorting to streamlined formulations such as “situation”, “issue”, “crisis”, “conflict” and even “Russian military operation”. The newspaper sees the United States, not Russia, as responsible for the events in Ukraine. Rather, Moscow is a victim of many years of intrigues on the part of the United States, which manifested itself in efforts to restrain and weaken Russia, in particular with the help of Ukraine. The newspaper often reproduces Russian narratives and Russian fakes, disseminates messages typical of Russian propaganda (for example, about biological laboratories in Ukraine), reports on referendums in the occupied Ukrainian territories from the evidence of the Russian RT television channel, about the annexation of four Ukrainian regions from the testimony of Chairman State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, about the attack on the Crimean bridge from the evidence of the FSB. Renmin Ribao is inclined to the opinion of the harmfulness of anti-Russian sanctions and the impracticality of supplying weapons to Ukraine, sees a priority way out of the Russian-Ukrainian war in an abstract “peace”, and not the victory of Ukraine. The issue in which Renmin Ribao sharply diverges from the position of official Moscow is the identification of the situation in Ukraine and the situation in Taiwan. Drawing parallels between Taiwan and Ukraine is popular in both the Russian and the Western press. However, when the war began to look less and less victorious for Russia, these parallels became unacceptable to both Renmin Ribao and official Beijing. African governments are spending over 1US$bn per year on digital surveillance technologies which are being used without adequate legal protections in ways that regularly violate citizens’ fundamental human rights. This report documents which companies, from which countries, are supplying which types of surveillance technology to African governments. Without this missing detail, it is impossible to adequately design measures to mitigate and overcome illegal surveillance and violations of human rights. Since the turn of the century, we have witnessed a digitalisation of surveillance that has enabled the algorithmic automation of surveillance at a scale not previously imaginable. Surveillance of citizens was once a labour and time-intensive process. This provided a practical limit to the scope and depth of state surveillance. The digitalisation of telephony has made it possible to automate the search for keywords across all mobile and internet communications. For the first time, state surveillance agencies can do two things: (a) conduct mass surveillance of all citizens’ communications, and (b) micro-target individuals for in-depth surveillance that draws together in real-time data from mobile calls, short message service (SMS), internet messaging, global positioning system (GPS) location, and financial transactions. This report was produced by qualitative analysis of open-source data in the public domain. The information presented is drawn from a diverse range of sources, including open government data sets, export licence portals, procurement notices, civil society databases of surveillance contracts, press releases from surveillance companies, academic articles, reports, and media coverage. The research is organised using a typology of five categories of surveillance technology. We did not set out to detail every technology available, every company, or every supply contract. Instead, we document the main companies and countries selling digital surveillance technologies to African governments. Rather than focus on the technical functionality distinguishing each product offering, we highlight five of the most important types of surveillance technology: internet interception, mobile interception, social media surveillance, ‘safe city’ technologies for the surveillance of public spaces, and biometric identification technologies.
