Framed in the decades of the 1920s and 1930s, this dissertation goes through the tensions between forms of regulation of modern American life and the control exerted by New York Hispanic colonia's press to normalize the identity of Hispanic women, with the aim to explore to which extent these tensions influenced the experiences of femininity of Hispanic women and their formation as modern subjects. An interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework, combining approaches from cultural studies, feminist theory, gender studies and US Latino studies, serves to study the essays, editorial pieces, advertisements, fashion reviews, letters to the editor, and beauty advices published in three representative publications: the weekly Grafico (1927-1931), the newspaper La Prensa (1913-present), and the cultural magazine Artes y Letras (1933-1939). Considering that popular culture is a site of struggle and cultural negotiation, this dissertation holds that the cultural practices that defined modern life and identity during these decades had a bearing on the formation of Hispanic women as modern subjects. Thus, despite the surveillance upon their behavior in the metropolis, the dissertation uncovers how these women became modern subjects precisely in the interstices among the different discourses that constructed the modern American woman as an expression of modern American society, the reading positions assigned by discourses about femininity, the Hispanic traditions affecting gender, and the social, economic and racial conditions that restricted their everyday life's experiences in the colonia. Moreover, through the study of different the images —photography, comic strips, illustrations—reproduced in the media under examination, it is argued that Hispanic woman emerged as a modern subject by means of the new conditions of visibility, which not only transformed their self-perception and their appearance in the public space, but also their positioning regarding the representations of femininity in both cultural contexts.

The object of this study is "Miguel de Unamuno and the Spanish-American Press (1898-1936)". From countless articles published in the Ibero-American press in the first third of the twentieth century but also its abundant private and public correspondence, we attempted to identify the evolution of political thought, social and religious intellectual face of this cultural history of an entire continent and particularly countries like Argentina and Chile. The purpose of this work is to redefine human relationships, social and political relations between the Spanish and Hispanic Americans from the immediate post disaster of 1898 until the Civil War of 1936. The Americanist vision of Miguel de Unamuno is based on the unifying concept of "Hispanidad" that brings together all the Hispanic peoples around a common language, Spanish. Unamuno intends to fight against the reactionary and traditionalist vision of a "homeland" Spanish sclerotic meet its Hispano-American children; through intense intellectual and cultural exchanges he wants to impose on the public a progressive and innovative vision of a new relationship between America and Spain: the "Hermandad", that is to say, fraternity, equality for all around a common language and culture, "el dia de la lengua" versus "el dia de la raza" (12 October)

In 1887, when William Randolph Hearst became the editorial head of a small daily in San Francisco, no one bothered to notice this well-off young man who admired Joseph Pulitzer’s work. Twenty years later he reigned over a gigantic media empire and held an unquestionable power in politics. In the meantime the paths followed respectively by the United States, the press and W. R. Hearst crossed many times. The United States fully entered what was to become the American Century as a prominent economic, industrial and colonial power, after the 1898 Spanish-American War. The American press underwent dramatic breakthroughs, and was vigorous as ever thanks to unceasing innovations and growing business-oriented practices. Hearst constructed an original career, at the crossroads of media and politics; he knew great successes, bitter defeats and disappointments. Entertaining to some, frightening to others, he was nonetheless the focus for the aspirations of a silent fringe of the population, and conceived his public life as a true story with twists and turns, similar to the stories accounting for the success of "yellow journalism" that constituted Hearst’s ethics and political weapon of choice, despite many criticisms. Beyond fascination, caricature or hasty judgments, his career deserves a reassessment that takes into account the changes affecting the core of American society. Without the help, intended or not, of those major transformations, Hearst’s adventure might not have left such a strong mark on his country’s history: a significant part of the bustling destiny of the United States at the turn of the XXth century, it is also, in many respects, an emblematic one

The French debate over American “Imperialism” between 1898 and 1908 began with the Spanish-American war (1898). The American victory impressed French analysts who started referring to the United States as imperialists. Their imperialism proved to be territorial, economic and mystic. It mainly sought to form a network of naval and commercial stations to get access to the vast Chinese market. Analysts also noted that the United States was getting involved in another form of expansionism influenced by its “Open Door” policy. According to some analysts, American imperialism was not less interested than that of the European countries. Whereas for others, it was idealistic. In addition, the Monroe doctrine was perceived as a tool of territorial expansion. It was a cause for concern and some called on Europe (on France) to fight this domination. Ultimately, although French analyses were numerous and critical, we found very few elements likely to corroborate the thesis of an essentialist “French anti-Americanism”

This study on history of ideas investigates the political thought of blanco white and his influence during the crisis of the hispanic world, through his periodicals: el semanario patriotico, sevilla, 1809, and el espagnol, london, 1810-1814. The first part tries to trace the roots of bw's liberation in his life time in spain, and finds our his jacobinism out of el semanario patriotico. The second part points out on the one hand the antidemocratic character of el espanol which suggests british style constitutionalism for the peninsular institutions, and on the other hand a liberal attitude towards the colonial problem. Bw vindicates the spanish americans behaviour, thinks that the independance is inivetable at term, though premature in 1810, fights againts separatism and recommends a "moderate" independence through british mediation. He sincerely supports the line of the foreign office. The third part shows the role of the periodical in the antiocolonialist struggle in cadiz, how it was taken over by the propagandists of independance in london and in south america, its conservative influence in mexico and its importance as source for the historiography of independence. The conclusion underlines the role of bw in orientating the emancipatory processus and in diffusing liberalism in south america, and accounts for his success by the conjunction of his liberal idealism and the historical period
Roché, Raphaël. "Culture, autorité, politique : le journal Redactor General de José Cecilio Del Valle (1825-1826)." Thesis, Tours, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017TOUR2014.
José Cecilio del Valle (1777-1834) was a Central American author and journalist, who had been committed to political life since 1804. By writing of the 1821 Declaration of Independence, Valle becomes a leading politician and is one of the founders of the Central American Federal Republic. Within that context, José del Valle founds the Redactor General, a periodical publication that is an important part of his works and of the first years of Central American journalism (32 issues in 1825-1826). Nevertheless, the Redactor General has not been the object of a systematic study so far, and remains inaccessible to the general public to this day. The three aims of this investigative project are to: − Develop and publish a scholarly publication of all of the issues of the Redactor General; − Develop an introductory study to this corpus with a biography of the author and a study of the appearance of the Central American periodical press; − Develop a systematic study of the elements involved in del Valle´s national imaginary construction
The aim of this doctoral thesis is the study of the Spanish lexicon in the journalistic language of the U.S. Hispanic Press. The Spanish language, which is part of the historical legacy of the United States, continues to be the most spoken minority language in the country: the U.S. Hispanics, or the Latinos, who in this thesis I am going to call hispanounidenses, reached 60.6 million people in 2019, which means that they represent the 18,5% of the American population. Therefore, the circulation of the Hispanic Ethnic Press in the country is unsurprising and, as I showed in this study, its development is actually rooted in the nineteenth century with the circulation of the first Hispanic newspaper in the United States, El Misisipí. The Hispanounidense community that has been formed in the United States is very heterogeneous, its components can vary by place of origin, linguistic variety and social class; in addition, it should be noted that the U.S. Hispanics are in constant and inevitable contact with the English language, which is the dominant language of the American society. In fact, U.S. Spanish cannot be described without considering the influence of the English language: Spanish is permeable to English, but in a controlled way, it is imbued with English elements but without being supplanted by them. As a result, U.S. Spanish reflects these characteristics: it consists of its different regional varieties, the heritage varieties that have been present in the territory for a long time and the new emerging varieties produced by inter-dialectal levelling; it is also characterised by linguistic loanwords and calques from the English language, by the estadounidismos and by the bilingual practice called Spanglish. In the light of this heterogenous U.S. Hispanic community, I started the study for this doctoral thesis examining the following hypotheses: what variety of Spanish is used in the U.S. Hispanic Press? Although it is known that language in the press tends to use formal terms, is it likely that the vocabulary used in a Hispanic newspaper reflects the local characteristics of its Hispanic community to which they are directed? Therefore, to what extent is the Spanish used international or influenced by Spanish regionalisms, the English language (in terms of linguistic loanwords), estadounidismos (that is, special English loanwords employed exclusively in U.S. Spanish), and code switching (Spanglish)? Is the Ethnic Press still important for the XXI century U.S. Hispanic community? Is the Spanish language variety used in the U.S. Hispanic Press a suitable normative model for the Spanish language in the U.S.? To answer these questions, I created an original corpus of U.S. Hispanic Press texts, called PRENSEEU18, of 273 639 words and which includes 501 articles from four daily newspapers, El Diario NY, Diario Las Américas (Miami), El Diario de El Paso, La Opinión (Los Angeles), and from four weeklies, El Tiempo Latino (Washington D.C.), La Raza (Chicago), Latino News (Tennessee), El Latino de Hoy (Oregon) and written between November and December 2018. Subsequently, I conducted a qualitative and a quantitative lexical analysis through the consultation of lexicographic tools and Spanish reference corpora (the Corpus NOW of M. Davies and the CORPES XXI of RAE) as well as a quantitative examination through automatic language analysis software (Antconc and Textomate). In the subsequent phase I categorised the lexical units and the expressions detected in the corpus according to an original lexical classification model, which I improved during the study; I then subdivided the lexicon in lexical typologies that refer to traditional lexical categories (americanisms, anglicisms, neologisms) but that I adapted to the special U.S. Spanish linguistic context: General Spanish Americanisms, Regional Spanish Americanisms, Pan-Hispanic Anglicisms, Unregistered Pan-Hispanic Anglicisms, Pan-American Anglicisms, Lexical or Graphic Estadounidismos, Occasional Anglicisms and New Lexical or Semantic Creations. The results of the study show that the Hispanic press in the United States is mostly dominated by Pan-Hispanic Anglicisms and in second place by General Spanish Americanisms; the presence of Regional Spanish Americanisms is also remarkable because it highlights the influence of the main Spanish dialect spoken in the area where each Hispanic newspaper circulates: it is no coincidence, for example, that El Diario NY, the newspaper addressed to the Hispanics of Mexican and Caribbean origins, who are the largest Hispanic groups living in the area, is dominated by Regional Spanish Americanisms of Mexico and the Caribbean. Similarly, the Cubanisms and Venezuelanisms identified in the Diario Las Américas reflect the most diffused Spanish dialects spoken in the Miami area; and for each publication studied the results obtained lead to similar observations. In addition, the findings show that the U.S. Hispanic Press is certainly influenced by the English language in terms of linguistic loanwords and calques, adapted or not to the Spanish language, of international or Pan-American diffusion, whereas it is characterised by code-switching with English and by occasional anglicisms, which form part of the phenomenon of Spanglish, only to a lesser extent. Therefore, I can state that the Spanish language variety used in the U.S. Hispanic Press is standard and prestigious, it simultaneously presents international and regional lexicon, configuring itself as a Glocal Spanish, a global and local variety at once. For this reason, the Spanish variety diffused through the U.S. Hispanic Press can also constitute a normative model for the U.S. Spanish to use in institutions, mass media and to teach in schools. In relation to the lexicon analysed, in the thesis I also presented and checked whether the term or expression examined was represented with an accurate diatopic description in the dictionaries considered: in the cases where the representation was found to be deficient, I suggested the integration and updating of its lexicographic information, in particular of the diatopic labels, by proposing to include the Spanish acronym for the United States, EE. UU. to indicate the diffusion of the words or expressions in the U.S. Spanish variety. In addition, in each periodical I highlighted the Pan-Hispanic Anglicisms emphasizing their historical presence in Spanish dictionaries through the consultation of the Nuevo Tesoro Lexicográfico de la Lengua Española: so, I represented the date of their recording in a table, indicating also if they were included in the contemporary dictionaries of Spanish considered for the study, the Diccionario de la lengua española (RAE-ASALE, act. 2019), the Diccionario de uso del español by María Moliner (2016) and the Diccionario del español actual (Clave, 2012). Then I investigated the presence of new and not yet recorded anglicisms: in particular, I produced a list of new estadounidismos discovered which I suggest including in future editions of dictionaries such as the Diccionario de americanismos (RAE-ASALE, 2010), the Diccionario de anglicismos del español estadounidense (Moreno-Fernández, 2018) or in future lexicographic collections dedicated to the Spanish of the United States. Similarly, during the lexical analysis of the texts of the corpus, I discovered that the origin of the author who signs the article and its subject matter influence the lexicon identified: I recognised that international anglicisms tend to be found in sports, scientific, technological, automotive and lifestyle articles, especially if they are signed by the EFE agency, while Spanish regionalisms are more likely to be employed in opinion articles and news articles from Latin America by Hispano- American authors who collaborate with the newspapers analysed. Finally, I detected and categorised some translation strategies between Spanish and English: according to these techniques, journalists tend to translate English expressions or denominations to Spanish; I have classified these examples as Directly Translated Anglicisms. Or, journalists can opt for reverse mediation, they can translate expressions or denominations from Spanish to English, these are the Reversely Translated Anglicisms. In the same way, reporters can explain cultural estadounidismos, which are the elements proper to American culture, from English to Spanish: I call this typology Translated Cultural Estadounidismos or, if the expressions translated from Spanish are linguistic calques from English, Cultural Estadounidismos Translated by Calques. On the other hand, I have also highlighted the presence of untranslated English acronyms that reveal an absence of mediation from English realised by journalists who are heavily influenced by the U.S. society English denominations: I have called them Untranslated American Acronyms. These strategies also prove that even today the Hispanic Ethnic Press is a useful tool to guide Hispanics in the U.S. society. In fact, as I demonstrated in this doctoral thesis, the U.S. Hispanic Press is a valuable medium to promote social rise, the good use of the Spanish language, with its global and local characteristics, and to make the hispanounidense identity cohesive.

Manuel del Socorro Rodriguez (1758-1819) is recognized as the father of Colombian journalism and as a participant in the Enlightened milieu of Santafé de Bogotá. This research proposes, in a first chapter, an approach to his life, his work and his legacy, tracing his work as editor of the Papel Periódico de Santafé de Bogotá (1791-1797), the Redactor Americano (1806-1808), the Alternativo del Redactor Americano (1807-1809), Los Crepúsculos de España y de Europa (1809) and La Constitución Feliz (1810). This chapter also introduces the document El Reino Feliz (1794), in which Rodriguez produces a report on the evils afflicting the society of New Granada. The proposed analysis seeks to understand the work of Rodriguez as a set of the efforts of a citizen of the Republic of Letters to achieve an elusive happiness in his adopted homeland. This section will also deal with the vicissitudes that this lettered, public librarian, newspaper publisher and enlightened subject, lived through, facing the challenge of reconciling his Catholicism and his enlightened views, his americanity and his hispanity, his deep respect for tradition and his strong passion for modernity. Then, we present a set of 12 transcriptions. These are excerpts from the epistolary exchange generated between Rodríguez and agents of the Spanish monarchic system. Among these transcriptions, the reader is going to find 3 already presented in a previous research and 9 unpublished transcriptions. This exercise allows the reader to see the relationship between Rodriguez’s ideas, expressed within the private sphere (although official), with those formulated in his newspapers. Finally, the reader is introduced to the concept of happiness in the XVIIIth and early XIXth century. Happiness was a main goal of the enlightened world and numerous ideas were produced to achieve this objective.
