Abstract This paper deals with the possessive constructions in Italo-Romance dialects compared with the possessive constructions of one Francoprovençal (Gallo-Romance) variety spoken in Faeto (Foggia, Apulia). Francoprovençal possessive constructions are at a first glance distinct from Central and Southern Italian possessive constructions, mainly since in Francoprovençal (as in French) possessive forms (clitics) are prenominal. In Central and Southern Italian dialects, we find instead a split possession: 1) postnominal enclitic possessives (weak possessive markers) associated with parental kinship nouns distinct from 2) prenominal possessives associated with common nouns and postnominal strong possessive forms. Crucially, I claim that enclitic possessives are inflexional affixes, that receive a structural word-internal linearization from the same external (syntactical) linearization identified for proclitic possessive markers (in Faeto). I retain that the distinction between postnominal weak enclitics in Italian dialects and Francoprovençal weak prenominal possessive constructions is based on the inalienability (parental kin nouns + enclitics in DP). All possessive clitics (proclitics and enclitics) show a common syntactic configuration and differ only in Distributed Morphology, according to a “late” feature insertion and operations after syntax. Indeed, the possessive determiners represent three different morphological spells out of the same syntactic object: the bundle of features [Person], [(Gender) Number], [Definite], generated in functional heads.

Abstract This paper offers a first systematic investigation of predicative possessive constructions across Western Iranian languages. The notion of possession is conceived as a prototypical domain. It is shown that investigated languages are classified into two major areally distributed groups with respect to predicative possessive constructions: (i) “be”-verb languages, (ii) “have”-verb languages. “Have”-possessives, which originated from “action schema”, are argued to have superseded the archaic “be”-possessives, which trigger a non-canonical marking of the possessor argument. However, “have”-verb languages have preserved relics of the older “be”-possessive in some neighbouring domains to possession. In addition, two languages exhibit possession split and are in transition from “be”-possession to “have”-possession: these languages demonstrate the effect of alienability/inalienability in such a split.

The paper analyzes the structural models of Ket possessive constructions. The means of ex-pressing possessive construction components and the ways of marking possessive relations between the first possessive construction component denoting the subject of possession (a possessor) and the second component indicating the object of possession (a possessum) are considered. The study is based on the conception proposed by E. Vajda, according to which the possessive markers are possessive pronominal clitics, used as either clitics or proclitics, depending on the context. Two-component and multiple-component constructions are identi-fied. The two-component constructions contain a possessor, a possessum, and a linking mark-er, the semantic scope of which is a possessum. The non-expanded and expanded possessive constructions are analyzed. Both the first and the second substantive component of the two-component construction may be expanded by an attribute. The two-component constructions having a possessor expanded by an attribute are characterized by a distant ordering of a pos-sessor noun and a possessum noun, including distant positions of a possessive proclitic and a possessum noun. The derivative processes of transforming possessive constructions are con-sidered. The rising derivation process consists of embedding one more possessor into the con-struction with an original possessor. Both possessors are marked by appropriate possessive pronominal clitics. It is found that in Ket, the recessive derivation of omitting a possessor noun expressed by a personal pronoun stem is available as well, resulting in a construction with a non-expressed (omitted) possessor. The corresponding possessive pronominal clitic attaching proclitically to possessum noun is overtly retained at the surface morphosyntactic level.

Abstract Recent accounts on the typology of predicative possession, including those by Stassen, recognise a Topic Possessive type with the possessee coded like the figure in an existential predication, and the possessor coded as a topic that is not subcategorised by the predicate and is not related to any syntactic position in the comment, literally: As for Possessor, there is Possessee. The Asian region is explicitly singled out as being a Topic Possessive area. On the basis of a sample of 71 languages from the four main language families of continental East and Southeast Asia – Sino-Tibetan, Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kadai and Austroasiatic, contrary to these previous accounts of the distribution of the main types of predicative possession in the world’s languages, we argue that this area should rather be considered as showing a particularly high concentration of Have-Possessives, with the additional particularity that the verbs occurring in the Have-Possessive constructions in this linguistic area are polysemous verbs also used for existential predication. After briefly reviewing Stassen’s typology of predicative possession, we discuss his account of the Topic Possessive type and then present five arguments for considering why the possessor NP of the existential/possessive verb yǒu 有 in Standard Mandarin Chinese cannot be analysed as invariably occupying the position of a topic, and consequently, that the construction should be reclassified as an instance of the Have-Possessive type. In the final sections, the situation is examined for other Southeast Asian languages showing the same configuration for predicative possession and existential predication as Standard Mandarin, to the extent that data is available.

One of the tenets of construal theory is that the speakers of a language deploy alternate constructions to express different conceptual contents. To do so, the humans use construal mechanism to portray and interpret a certain scene from their perspectives. To achieve the objective of the present paper, we apply reference point model, Construal and Figure and ground theories to CK possessive constructions. Possessive constructions are relational structures established by human mental ability to invoke one entity as the reference point and relate it to another entity which is described as the profile determinant. In applying construal theory to CK possessive construction, we argue that different interpretations can be assumed from ezafe (-i) and possessive clitics in conveying possession. With the application of these three theories, a new perspective has been put forward to possessive constructions in CK.

The paper describes possessive constructions with pronouns in Shughni. In this language, possessor can be expressed by personal and demonstrative pronouns, pronouns with the locative postposition and, and constructions including both a standard pronoun and a pronoun marked with a locative marker. I compare these construction types, analyze types of semantic relations between the possessor and the possessee. Besides that, two syntactic types of possessive constructions are distinguished and their syntactic features are described.

Summary The aim of this paper is to study possessive determiners in French when they are used with nouns that are predicates in support verb constructions. We distinguish two situations: the possessive refers either to the first or to the second argument of the predicate. We show that in these situations the possessives behave differently from possessives in other configurations, i.e. when the POSS N noun phrases are arguments. We show that the two interpretations of the possessive vary according to whether the support verb is standard or non standard. Some of those interpretations are connected to speech phenomena.

This study aims to describe the characteristics of Possessive Construction in Javanese and relations of expressions between Possessor (PR) and Possessum (PS). The source of data are texts in Javanese from Djaka Lodang Magazine Volume XXII, XXIV, XXIX year 2017 and Panjebar Semangat Magazine Volume 29, 19, and 20 from May until July 2018 which contains Possessive Constructions in Javanese also informant who is a native speaker of Javanese. The data are analyzed using Simak Method, with base Sadap technic and advance Simak-Bebas libat cakap technic and Catat technic, meanwhile technic for analyzing the data used are Agih Method to determine the Possessive Construction dan Padan Method to determine the relation between PR and PM elements. Javanese Possessive Constructions marked with clitics -e or ­-ne as possessive marker. The results show Javanese Possessive Constructions meaning exists at polymorphemic level, phrase level, and clause level. On polymorphemic level, possessive meaning expressed by nouns followed by enclitics persona pronoun. On Phrase level, possessive meaning expressed by noun which followed by noun persona and noun followed by noun. Persona pronoun acts as PR. Noun which acts as PR are (Ilahi), animal, plants and (concrete) noun. On clause level possessive meaning expressed by verb which occupy predicate (P). Noun occupying subject in clause recognized as possession (PM). In Javanese, it is found Possessive Construction which sates the relationship of proprietary in the form of; Possessive Construction in which PM elements is non-humane noun and PR elements is humane noun or persona pronoun, PM element is humane noun and PR element is humane (self-name) or persona pronoun, and PM element is non-living noun and PR element also non-living noun.

This study addresses the question of the mental representation and processing of language by investigating &ldquo
structural priming&rdquo
in Turkish Genitive-Possessive (GEN-POSS) constructions. Structural priming is the facilitating effect of having already experienced a structural form on its subsequent processing. We investigate this phenomenon on a construction pair in Turkish, which shares the same external GEN-POSS morpho-syntactic template despite having distinct grammatical categories. The structures under scrutiny are possessive noun phrases (e.g. &ldquo

The results of the study which consists of a series of production and comprehension experiments with various methodologies (written sentence completion, self-paced reading and eye-tracking) indicate that structural priming might access the morphosyntactic level of representation in Turkish. Priming seems sensitive to the distinction between the phrasal vs. clausal nature of structures. During the processing of GEN-POSS constructions, the grammatical information regarding the constituents is accessed. Complex forms are further decomposed if processing resources are available. Overall, language production and comprehension seem to operate on the same structural representations but through different mechanisms. In addition, the study also contributes to the understanding of structural priming as a methodological paradigm and to the establishment of a bridge between the processing and theoretical linguistic analysis of Turkish nominalized verbs. To conclude, this study pioneers in exploring structural priming in Turkish and opens way to future research in this line.

Cette thèse concerne la description des constructions possessives en tongugbe, l’un des dialectes de l’éwé, langue parlée au sud-est du Ghana au long du fleuve Volta. La thèse présente une description détaillée des constructions; et tente de comprendre la relation qui existe entre les constructions possessives propositionnelles et les constructions locatives et existentielles. De plus, ce travail présente une première esquisse de la grammaire de tongugbe. La grammaire présente surtout des résultats préliminaires sur le contraste de durée qui existe au niveau des tons de tongugbe et un système de démonstratifs très riche. Les constructions possessives peuvent être regroupées dans trois catégories : les constructions attributives, les constructions prédicatives et les constructions à possesseur externe. Il est montré que les configurations structurelles des constructions possessives attributives sont motivées par des considérations fonctionnelles. Il est aussi démontré que les variations structurelles des constructions possessives prédicatives et des constructions à possesseur externe correspondent à des différences de sens. Enfin, il est argumenté que, synchroniquement, les constructions possessives propositionnelles et les constructions locatives et existentielles ne peuvent pas être réduites à une structure unique. This dissertation concerns the description of possessive constructions in Tongugbe, one of the many dialects of the Ewe language, which is spoken in south-eastern Ghana, along the Volta River. It presents a detailed description of the constructions; and explores the relationship that exists between clausal possessive constructions and locative and existential constructions. In addition to this, the work presents a first outline grammar of Tongugbe. The grammar presents notably preliminary findings on the duration contrast in tones of Tongugbe and a rich demonstrative paradigm. The possessive constructions can be grouped into attributive, predicative and external possessor constructions. It is shown that the structural configurations of attributive possessive constructions are functionally motivated. It is also demonstrated that structural variations in predicative possessive and external possessor constructions correspond to differences in meaning. Finally, it is argued that, synchronically, clausal possessive constructions and locative and existential constructions are not reducible to a single structure. The view supported here then is that each construction is a form-meaning pair

Extract: [...] One of the often noted characteristic features of the Celtic languages is the absence of a singular verbal form with the meaning ‘to have’.1 The principal way of expressing possession is through periphrastic constructions with prepositions (such as Irish ag, Scottish Gaelic aig ‘at’; Welsh gan, Breton gant ‘at, with’) and appropriate forms of the substantive verb. Pronominal prepositions, another distinctive feature of the Celtic languages, consist of a preposition and a suffixed pronoun, or rather a pronominal personal ending. This construction may be analyzed as an instance of category fusion. Thus, the Irish and Welsh equivalents of English ‘I have money’ are Tá airgead agam or Mae arian gen i, respectively, both literally meaning ‘is money at-me/with-me’. This note discusses pronominal possessive constructions in Celtic languages (and some comparable examples from Celtic Englishes) and provides some background information on pronominal prepositions and comments on historical developments of these forms. Tem-se argumentado que a língua Pirahã, da família Mura, falada na Amazônia brasileira, é não-recursiva, não apresentando nenhum tipo de auto-encaixamento sintático (Everett, 2005). O objetivo dessa dissertação é investigar essa questão. Primeiramente, uma definição formal de recursão é necessária. Apresentamos, assim, uma análise histórica do termo, considerando sua origem no campo da matemática e da lógica e sua trajetória dentro da linguística formal Chomskyniana. A conclusão a que se chega é que dentro da Gramática Gerativa, recursão deve ser entendida como um conjunto finito de funções que chamam por si mesmas, podendo tomar seu outup prévio como input (i.e. operação Merge do Programa Minimalista (Chomsky, 2015)). Esse recurso cognitivo universal é responsável pela natureza combinatorial da Gramática (Língua Interna), conferindo a ela a propriedade de infinitude discreta. Assim, a ausência de auto-encaixamento em uma determinada língua não é evidência contra a universalidade da recursão. Representações com auto-encaixamento são apenas um dos possíveis resultados externos do sistema combinatorial recursivo da Gramática interna. O segundo objetivo dessa dissertação é apresentar novos dados de pesquisa de campo em estruturas nominais possessivas em Pirahã, demonstrando que auto-encaixamentos nesse domínio sintático são possíveis e produtivos na língua. A conclusão geral da nossa pesquisa é que a posição de Everett contra a universalidade da recursão está tanto teoricamente, quanto empiricamente incorreta. Duas são as principais contribuições dessa dissertação para a teoria linguística formal: oferecer um melhor entendimento de computabilidade interna à Gramática, e apresentar novos dados empíricos sobre a sintaxe de encaixamentos em Pirahã.
It has been claimed that Pirahã, a Brazilian native language spoken in the Amazon region, is non-recursive, disallowing syntactic self-embedding altogether (Everett, 2005). This thesis investigates this claim. First, a formal definition of recursion is necessary, and we examine how this term appeared within mathematics and logic and how it made its way to formal linguistics. Our conclusion is that within Generative Grammar, recursion is to be understood as a finite set of functions that calls for itself, taking its previous output as its input (i.e. the operation Merge). It is responsible for the combinatorial nature of Grammar, a universal cognitive capacity, which confers I-language with its core property: discrete infinity. The unavailability of self-embedding in a given language is not evidence against the universality of recursion. Self-embedding representations are one, but only one of the possible external outcomes of the recursive computations within I-language. The second goal of this thesis is to present new fieldwork data on possessive DPs in Pirahã, showing that self-embedding in this structural domain is possible and productive. Putting it all together, our conclusion is that Everett s claim about the universality of recursion is both theoretically and empirically incorrect. The contribution of this thesis to the field of formal linguistics is twofold: it offers a better understanding of computability within I-language, and a new empirical-based assessment of syntactic embedding in Pirahã.

This thesis involves an examination of a range of historical discourses and how they have contributed to the shape and definition of constructions of cultural identity in Australia. The impact of such constructions on the socio-cultural environment has created a situation where Australia is internationally regarded as a just, fair, and tolerant democratic society but concomitantly has ensured a continuing state of colonisation for the Indigenous peoples of Australia and denied them a history beyond I 788. This highlights an inconstancy in the representation of Australian society that has privileged certain forms of cultural production and limited the ability of the society to adequately embrace its culturally diverse make-up. It is against the background of a continuing colonial imperative that many of the arguments presented in this thesis will be made. Cultural production is the way in which all facets of social, political, and economic life are accounted for in the realisation of unique meaningfulness for a culture. When these processes are selective and discriminatory a sense of disruption will become evident over time, as individuals and groups are marginalised and alienated from the dominant culture. While justice and tolerance may long have been ideals for the Australian community, and have contributed significantly to the endurance of Australia as a unique socio-cultural environment, they are ideals that have often been circumscribed by influential ideological assertions. For example, the ideology of nationalism and national identity in particular has been the driving force of Australian society since the late I 800s and has very much defined the cultural, social, political and economic domains. The ideological circumscription that nationalism entails has erected barriers to the cohesion of Australian society, in that it has promoted a false homogeneity as a 'truth' of representation. In order to investigate the questions raised throughout the thesis a number of theoretical concepts, or tools, have been chosen to address the problematic nature of defining cultural identity; the cultural condition; and the meaning and impact of multiculturalism. The tools chosen primarily stem from the works of Jean-Franyois Lyotard, Michel Foucault, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Benedict Anderson. The thesis posits that the imagining of the future Australian republic requires thoughtful engagement with all facets of the socio-politico-cultural environment including those historical events that may have been seen as undesirable or unnecessary by the dominant cultural memory. It is not the history itself, however, that is in view but the ways in which representations of such history have been responsible for distorted or false constructions. It is the goal of this thesis to emphasise a more inclusive view of Australian history in order to enable a positive future direction for all Australian citizens - now and in the future. The thesis concludes by drawing the threads of the discussion together and considers how the Australian community can resist the temptation to accept a less tolerant social context and determine positive ways in which to transform the socio-cultural environment to develop an inclusive, just, and ethical cultural milieu.

Our paper focuses on the Russian expression svoj. Many authors argue that it should be divided into two lexemes: a reflexive possessive that must be locally bound and an adjective. However, while some cases are clear, the others became a source of controversy. This problem has never been analyzed in a corpus study. In this paper, we examined a corpus sample of the sentences with nominative svoj. We showed that examples with external possessors with u-PPs are the most frequent in this set and analyzed them in more detail. Two types of such constructions with partly different properties are identified. In sum, we concluded that svoj does not occupy the syntactic position of the possessor in the NP and does not express a possessive relation semantically. Rather, it acts as a clause-level adjectival predicate, and its meaning is similar to that of the English different.

<p>The multi-storey Yuen Long Town development in Hong Kong is separated by a live Light Rail Track. To connect the two sides of the development, a footbridge and vehicular bridge has been constructed using a novel construction technique. The footbridge is a 45m long fully enclosed steel warren truss bridge located at a lower level and the vehicular bridge is a 50m long steel concrete composite bridge located at the top of the podium.</p><p>The erection of each bridge took 3 days. Both bridges were in turn assembled on top of the adjoining podium of the development. They were then connected to a turntable constructed at the edge of the podium and temporarily made into a cantilever cable stay bridge. In an overnight rail possession, the bridges were rotated 120 degrees over the railway. Temporary cables were then removed, and each bridge were lowered by strand jacks to the final level over the next two rail possessions.</p>

Abstract In mechanical engineering we are usually concerned with dynamically loaded constructions, i.e. machinery parts. In this paper a new idea for high-cycle fatigue behaviour working with the two-grid method is presented, using one grid on the micro-level and the other one for the meso-level. While on the meso-level the behaviour of the construction in high-cycle fatigue is nearly linear, however on the micro-level there are defects and microcracking with small plastic zones around the crack tips. Using a homogenization technique, we develop an energy release rate formulation on the micro-grid, from which the evolution equation for increasing damage arises. The new idea is now to define the damage at the meso-level depending on the damage at the micro-level, while controlling the stress redistribution by a modified locally coupled analysis. This leads to a new concept for shape optimization of mechanical engineering problems using the sequential quadratic programming technique. The theoretical and numerical results are controlled by experiments using a hydropulser machine. For high quality steel an increase of lifetime by a factor of about 3 was achieved for our shape optimized notched structures compared with the ones possessing classical circular cut-outs. Therefore we can say that this concept offers a new possibility for lifetime increasement of mechanical engineering structures.

Additive manufacturing technology has significantly matured over the last two decades. Recent progress in 3D printing has made it an attractive choice for fabricating complex shapes out of select materials possessing desirable properties at small and large scales. The application of biomimetics to the fabrication of structural composites has been shown to enhance their toughness and dynamic shear resistance. Building homes from bioinspired composites is possible if the process is automated. This can be achieved through additive manufacturing where layers of hard and soft materials can be deposited by 3D printing. This study examines mechanical properties of reinforced concrete fabricated by 3D printing. Preliminary results of 4-point bend tests are presented and the implications of 3D-printed home building on current conventional construction practices are discussed.

Abstract Composite sandwich constructions offer light weight and high bending stiffness advantages for aerospace and automotive applications among other structures. The use of a hollow truss core or z-fiber pin core is a new concept in sandwich composites, where the core is hollow and accessible, thereby providing space advantages for fuel cells and/or electronic assemblies besides from possessing high shear and axial stiffness. The z-fiber pins are oriented at predetermined geometry’s and penetrate into the laminated facesheets making-up the sandwich composite. In the reference (Palazatto et. al, 1997), the low velocity response of hollow truss core composites with z-fiber pins oriented at 10 degree and 20 degree angles with respect to the facesheets were investigated by us. The current paper presents the post-impact microstructure, ultrasonic and vibration based nondestructive evaluation (NDE) studies and compression-after-impact response accompanied by acoustic emission (AE) testing of these composites.

In the real world, we use our innate manual dexterity to create and manipulate 3D objects. Conventional virtual design tools largely neglect this skill by imposing non-intuitive 2D control mechanisms for interacting with 3D design models. Their usage is thus cumbersome, time consuming and requires training. We propose a novel design paradigm that combines users’ manual dexterity with the physical affordances of non-instrumented and ordinary objects to support virtual 3D design constructions. We demonstrate this paradigm through Proto-TAI, a quick prototyping application where 2D shapes are assembled into 3D representations of ideated design concepts. Here, users can create 2D shapes in a pen-based sketch medium and use expressive handheld movements of a planar proxy to configure the shapes in 3D space. The proxy provides a metaphorical means for possessing and controlling the shapes. Here, a depth sensor and computer vision algorithms track the proxy’s spatial movement. The 3D design prototype constructed in our system can be fabricated using a laser cutter and physically assembled on-the-fly. Our system has vast implications in many design and assembly contexts, and we demonstrate its usability and efficacy through user studies and evaluations.

The vibro-acoustic environment inside a launch vehicle payload fairing is extremely violent resulting in excessive development costs for satellites and other payloads. The development of smart structures and active noise and vibration control technologies promised to revolutionize the design, construction and, most importantly, the acoustic environment within these fairings. However, the early promise of these technologies has not been realized in such large-scale systems primarily because of the excessive complexity, cost and weight associated with centralized control systems. Now, recent developments in MEMS sensors and actuators, along with networked embedded processor technology, have opened new research avenues in decentralized controls based on networked embedded systems. This work describes the development and comparison of decentralized control systems that utilize this new control paradigm. The controllers are hosted on numerous nodes, possessing limited computational capability, sensors and actuators. Each of these nodes is also capable of communicating with other nodes via a wired or wireless network. The constraints associated with networked embedded systems control that the control systems be relatively simple computationally, scalable and robust to failures. Simulations were conducted that demonstrate the ability of such a control architecture to attenuate specific structural modes.
