This article identifies the positional attributes of travel agents (TAs) in the extended TA network in Chongqing (China), and further examines the impact of the travel agent’s positional embeddedness (measured by three indicators: degree centrality, structural hole, and closeness centrality) on tour supplier integration (TSI). We applied the random permutations method (node-level) to test theoretical hypotheses based on a sample of 51 travel agents (TAs). It was found that the target travel agent’s positional embeddedness could positively accelerate the sustainable integration of tour suppliers and the travel agent’s structural hole attribute could significantly contribute to the TSI. The results indicated that a TA can strengthen control power by increasing the positional embeddedness to facilitate high efficiency supplier integration through which TAs can encourage the supplier development of sustainability (SDS) practices, and finally to upgrade the tourism supply chain (TSC) sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Reading can be described as a complex cognitive process of decrypting signs to create meaning. Eventually, it is a way of language achievement, communication, and sharing information and ideas. Changing lighting and color are known to improve visual comfort and the perceptual difficulties that affect reading for those with poor vision. AIM: This study aims to investigate the effect of changing the wavelengths and different levels of positional noise on reading performance for participants with best-corrected distant visual acuity (BCVA) of 6/6 or better. METHODOLOGY: Twenty English speakers with BCVA 6/6 or better were asked to read words presented in a printed format. The stimuli were black print words in a horizontal arrangement on matte white card. They were degraded using positional noise produced by random vertical displacements of the letter position below or above the horizontal line on three levels. RESULTS: Introducing positional noise affected word recognition differently with different wavelengths. The role of short wavelength in enhancing orthographic reading and word recognition is clear – they reduce the effects of positional noise. The error rate and duration time have different effects with different wavelengths, even when positional noise is introduced. CONCLUSION: The reading rate is not affected by changing the wavelength of the light. However, the mean differences in wpm were affected by changing the wavelengths. Also, introducing positional noise affects word recognition differently with different wavelengths.

This study examines positional segregation in light of recent data documenting the increased participation by black players in professional football and describes the relationships between positional segregation and experience and positional segregation and career length. The primary sample was composed of 1,508 professional football players from the 1982 season. A secondary sample of 1,371 professional football players was used to study career length. The results indicate that positional segregation is still prevalent in professional football. The recent increase in participation by black players has occurred in positions that have been primarily black in the past and at linebacker. Whites are likely to have more experience in professional football than blacks, which is explained in part by the positions in which blacks and whites are most likely to play.

This article addresses the scholarly debate on the relationship between interstate rivalry and military capacity. We draw on Tilly's bellicist theory of state formation in early modern Europe and Thies’ modifications to predatory theory, which prioritizes the role of interstate rivalry on state building, to explain variation in military capacity. We unpack the rivalry mechanism into spatial and positional rivalries and test how these two types of rivalry affect military capacity, and how positional rivalries affect military capacity in the long-term. Using time-series cross-sectional data analysis, we find that positional rivalries increase military capacity in the long term. Also, we find that spatial rivalry influences military capacity in the long-term, but its effects are uneven across indicators of military capacity, and it has a smaller effect on military capacity in comparison to positional rivalries. We conclude that not all types of rivalries have a uniform effect on military capacity and that competition over regional dominance, that is, positional rivalries, are the most impactful on military capacity. This study offers a more nuanced test of Tilly's bellicist theory and Thies’ modified predatory theory on state capacity.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is characterized by recurrence, which exposes patients to repeated vertigo attacks. Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be a risk factor in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, although effect of its elimination on recurrence reduction remains unknown. To determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation in preventing recurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo patients with vitamin D deficiency using a meta-analysis study. We searched and retrieved relevant articles from several databases, then used the Cochrane evaluation system or Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) to assess the quality of studies. We adopted risk-ratio (RR) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) to determine effect sizes, and further performed statistical analyses under a randomized- or fixed-effects model. Seven studies, comprising 602 and 731 participants in the case and control group respectively, met our inclusion criteria, and were therefore included in the meta-analysis. Assessment based on Cochrane evaluation system or MINORS revealed that most of the studies had high quality. Moreover, the randomized- model revealed that the vitamin D supplementation group had a lower recurrence rate than the control group which did not accepted vitamin D supplementation (RR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.26–0.65, p < 0.01). Overall, these findings indicate that vitamin D supplementation can significantly lower recurrence in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and vitamin D deficiency.

Purpose. To investigate age- and position-related changes of anterior chamber angle anatomy in normal, healthy eyes. Patients and Methods. Thirty subjects were separated into a younger and older cohort. The superior and inferior anterior chamber angles of the eyes were measured in supine and sitting positions by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) with bag/balloon technology. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate positional and age-related changes in angle morphology. Results. In the younger cohort, no location or positional differences in angle anatomy were observed. In the older cohort, the inferior quadrant was significantly narrower than the superior quadrant (P=0.0186) in the supine position. This cohort also demonstrated an interaction effect between position and location. In the older cohort, the angle was deeper inferiorly while the subject was sitting but was deeper superiorly while the subject was supine. Conclusion. Comparison of positional variations in anterior chamber angle anatomy as measured by UBM has recently become possible. This study found that age-related positional changes in the anterior chamber angle anatomy exist in normal healthy eyes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the stability of positional identity markers and phenotypic differences in isolated osteoblasts from distinct anatomic regions. In addition, the ability of heterotypic co-cultures to reprogramme site-specific Hoxa gene expression also tested. Rat osteoblastic cells from femurs and calvariae were harvested as matched pairs of cultures from 4 male rats. Cells were expanded extensively in medium supplemented with FGF-2, and were shown to maintain their osteoblastic phenotype as characterised by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OCN) expression and osteoblast-associated gene expression in long term culture. Gene expression of cells was determined by quantitative RT-PCR. Differences in Hoxa gene expression as markers of positional identity were maintained for up to at least 10 passages, with calvarial cells remaining Hoxa-ve throughout. The transcription factors Msx2 and Irx5 were consistently more highly expressed in calvarial cells, whereas Tbx3 expression was elevated in femoral cells. Expression of the osteoblast-associated genes Bglap and Sppl were elevated in femoral cells, and also associated with increased osteopontin secretion and bone nodule formation. Runx2 was elevated in calvarial cells. Cells were also pre-labelled with fluorescent vital staining and co-cultured for 7 days prior to separating by fluorescence activated cell sorter to investigate the possibility of re-programming of Hoxa negative cells by direct contact with Hoxa +ve cells. However no evidence was seen of modulation of positional identity genes and phenotypes in these heterotypic cultures. In conclusion, the results demonstrate persistence of expression of positional identity gene markers and phenotypic differences between femoral and calvarial osteoblasts for prolonged periods in culture. These data suggest that these differences in regionally defined osteoblasts are inherently programmed in the cells as a result of their embryological position. The results may have considerable implications when considering the transplantation of autologous cells in tissue engineering.

This thesis comprises three phases with a combined aim which was to investigate the effect of position on the lumbar intervertebral disc (IVD). The effect of position on the lumbar IVD in asymptomatic subjects and subjects with discogenic low back pain (DLBP) was explored using positional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (pMRI). Convenience samples of 11 asymptomatic and 34 DLBP subjects were recruited to have sagittal and axial pMRI scans performed in sitting (Neutral, Flexed and Extended), standing and lying (Supine and Prone extension) positions. The sagittal plane migration of the nucleus pulposus (NP) of each lumbar IVD in each position was measured from the sagittal and axial pMRI scans. Within and between group inferential analysis was performed using nonparametric tests. Both the asymptomatic and DLBP subjects’ demonstrated that position had statistically significant effects on the sagittal plane NP migration. Both groups demonstrated significantly greater posterior sagittal plane NP migration in Neutral and Flexed sitting positions compared to the other positions. However, between group comparisons identified that the asymptomatic subjects also demonstrated significantly greater posterior sagittal plane NP migration than the DLBP subjects. This pattern was more common in the upper lumbar IVDs (L1/2 and L2/3) between positions and less common in the lower IVDs (L4/5 and L5/S1) between positions. New knowledge regarding the behaviour of the lumbar IVD emerged from this research. The differences detected between the asymptomatic and DLBP subjects suggest that some current theories regarding DLBP may be incorrect. The results also support imaging of DLBP subjects in sitting positions as opposed to current supine positions. Although the limitations of the study reduce generalisation of the results, the implications for clinical practice, imaging and suggestions for further research from this work are important to improve understanding and conservative management of DLBP.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is produced in the rumen by isomerization of linoleic acid and has been shown to be anticarcinogenic. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding dietary CLA to pre-ruminant lambs or linoleic acid-rich safflower oil to weaned ruminating lambs. Fat content, CLA content and fatty acid (FA) composition of diaphragm, leg, rib, subcutaneous (SC) adipose and liver tissues were determined. The triacylglycerol (TAG) fractions of the total lipid (TL) from the diaphragm, rib and SC adipose tissues were analyzed for FA composition and FA positional distribution. The phospholipid (PL) fractions of the TL were analyzed for FA composition. The positional (PL) fractions of the TL were analyzed for FA composition. The positional distribution of FAs of liver PL was determined. Tissue fat content was affected by diet only in SC adipose tissue. Dietary supplementation with safflower oil increased the fat content of the subcutaneous adipose tissue whereas CLA supplementation resulted in decreased (P<0.05) fat content. Dietary supplementation with safflower oil increased (P<0.05) the CLA content of tissues by more than 200% whereas dietary supplementation with CLA did not affect CLA content. Positional distribution analysis indicated that CLA tends was localized to the sn-1/3 positions of TAG and the sn-2 position of the liver PL.

This research both develops new methods and expands upon existing methodologies in order to improve our understanding of voting patterns and party competition in Britain. The thesis comprises five sections, each of which relates to a particular research focus. The first and principal section describes the process of determining a new method for decomposing electoral bias for three-party competition under simple plurality rules of voting. The study of electoral bias is important for voting systems that requires periodic boundary reviews intended to equalise electorate and to remove malapportionment. These papers describe both the process for developing the threeparty bias method and later its application to UK general elections from 1983 onwards. The second section uses aggregate data gathered for the elections to the Greater London Authority in order to understand the patterns of electoral support across the capital, particularly support for minor parties. A considerable amount of research effort has been expended upon providing reliable models for electoral forecasting both in the UK and elsewhere. The third section includes a paper that develops a forecast model that utilises aggregate local election data to estimate national vote shares for the three main parties in the UK. A fourth section brings together a series of papers that are linked by the themes of voter behaviour, either in terms of geographical or ballot context. A study of voter turnout in a London borough describes the relationship between proximity to polling station and electoral turnout at different types of election. A 8 number of papers included in this section also detail the effects of candidate ballot order on electoral support. The fifth and final section groups together two papers that using individual-level survey data to describe the pattern of candidate recruitment for local elections in Britain and, specifically, the under-recruitment of both women and Black, Asian and other minority ethnic candidates.

La localisation des objets dans l'espace est l'une des fonctions centrales du système visuel. Lorsqu'un observateur ou une cible se déplace, le mouvement de l’œil ou de l'objet peut être pris en compte pour calculer la position de l'objet à n'importe quel moment. Il a été démontré à plusieurs reprises que le mouvement visuel peut fortement influencer la position perçue d'un objet. Par exemple, la position d'un stimulus contenant une texture en mouvement (De Valois & De Valois, 1991; Ramachandran & Anstis, 1990), celle d'un flash présenté sur (Cavanagh & Anstis, 2013) ou à côté (Whitney & Cavanagh, 2000) d'une texture en mouvement, et même les positions d'apparition et de disparition d'objets en mouvement (Fröhlich, 1923) sont perçus comme étant déplacées dans le sens du mouvement. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous avons exploré la relation entre ces changements de position provoqués par le mouvement et différentes formes d'attention visuelle: 1) l'attention spatiale temporaire, 2) l'attention globale et locale, 3) l'attention spatiale maintenue, et 4) l'attention centrée sur les objets. Dans une première série d'expériences, nous avons étudié dans quelle mesure et de quelle manière l'attention module l'effet Fröhlich (i.e la position perçue du début du mouvement est déplacée dans le sens du mouvement). Dans les expériences 1 et 2, nous avons mesuré l'effet Fröhlich dans différentes conditions de d'indiçage et nous avons montré que les indices non valides ou tardifs entraînent des déplacements perceptifs plus importants. Dans l'expérience 3, nous avons comparé les déplacements provoqués par le mouvement lorsque les sujets portaient leur attention sur un ensemble d'objets en mouvement qui formaient un groupe à quand ils portaient leur attention à un seul stimulus parmi cet ensemble. Les résultats montrent que l'effet Fröhlich n'était présent que lorsque l'attention sélectionne un seul objet et qu'il disparaît lorsque le stimulus est perçu dans un contexte de groupe (global). Ainsi, ces résultats suggèrent que l'attention sélective est à la fois à l'origine de et module l'effet Fröhlich. Ayant établi que les délais temporels de l'attention augmentent les changements de la position provoqués par le mouvement, l'étude suivante était conçue pour explorer si la distribution spatiale de l'attention a le même effet. Dans cette étude, nous avons utilisé le « flash grab » - un changement de position illusoire aperçu quand une cible est brièvement présentée brièvement sur un fond en mouvement au moment de l'inversion du sens du mouvement (Cavanagh & Anstis, 2013). Les essais étaient regroupés en différents blocks au début desquels un indice indiquait la région de l'espace dans laquelle la cible était susceptible d'apparaître. Pour cela nous avons utilisé le paradigme flash grab en présentant brièvement une forme sur un fond en mouvement au moment de l'inversion du sens du mouvement. Les résultats indiquent que les attributs de la cible orthogonaux au mouvement du fond étaient déplacés, alors que les attributs parallèles au mouvement restaient intacts. Ceci suggère que le mouvement interagit avec la position des attributs de l'objet (et que l'attention focale sélectionne) avant que ces attributs ne soient regroupés en un objet. Localizing objects in space is one of the central functions of the visual system. When an observer or a target is moving, the motion of the eye or the object can be taken into account to compute the current object locations. It has been shown many times that visual motion can strongly influence the perceived position of an object. For example, a stationary patch containing moving texture (De Valois & De Valois, 199; Ramachandran & Anstis, 1990), a flash presented on (Cavanagh & Anstis, 2013) or next to (Whitney & Cavanagh, 2000) a moving texture, and even the onset and offset positions of the moving targets (Fröhlich, 1923) are perceived as shifted in the direction of motion. In this thesis we explore the relationship between these motion-induced position shifts and visual attention in the following forms: 1) transient spatial attention, 2) global and local attention, 3) sustained spatial attention, and 4) object-based attention. In the first series of experiments we looked at whether and how attention modulates the shift in localization of motion onset (Fröhlich effect). In Experiments 1 and 2 we measured Fröhlich effect under different cueing conditions and established that invalid or late cues produced larger perceptual shifts. In Experiment 3 we compare the motion-induced shifts when the subjects attended to a set of moving stimuli as a group and when they attended to an orientation singleton. We showed that the Fröhlich effect was only present when the target was individuated and disappeared when the stimulus was perceived globally. Thus, the Fröhlich effect appeared to be both produced and modulated by focal attention. Having established that temporal delays of attention increase motion-induced position shifts, the next study explored if spatial distribution of attention has a similar effect. In this study we used flash grab - an illusory position shift seen when a target is briefly flashed on top of a moving background that abruptly changes direction (Cavanagh & Anstis, 2013). Trials were presented in blocks and before each block a cue indicated a range of possible target locations. We found that the flash grab was reduced if the spatial distribution of targets was limited to a range of 90° or less. The final study asked whether motion shifts the perceived position of an object as a whole or if separate features of a single object are shifted independently. To test this we used the flash grab paradigm and briefly presented a shape on top of a moving background at the moment it changed direction. The results showed that the features of the target that were orthogonal to the background motion were shifted, whereas the features parallel to the motion were intact. This suggests that motion interacts with the position of the object's features (and focal attention selects them) before they are bound together into an object. In conclusion, we applied a variety of attentional manipulations to motion-induced position shifts, and examined the link between the strength of the illusion and the characteristics of attention used in a particular task. We found that 1) motion-induced position shifts require focused attention and the possibility to track an individual motion trajectory; 2) allowing attention to be allocated more efficiently in space reduces the illusion; and 3) motion-induced shifts operate on the feature-based and not object-based level

Data from a Coarse Acquisition (C/A) Global Positing System (GPS) map-grade receiver were evaluated to assess the accuracy of differentially corrected points. Many studies have focused on the accuracy of GPS units under ideal data collection conditions. Ideal conditions allow the collection of data with four satellites (3D mode), yet field data conditions are often less than ideal. Four satellites may not always be in view because of mountainous topography, heavy forest cover, or other obstructions which block satellite signals from the receiver. This study examines GPS accuracy when four satellites are not available, instead collecting data with only three satellites (2D mode).

3D GPS points compute four unknowns: x, y , z, and clock error. In comparison, 2D GPS points are less accurate as only three unknowns are calculated: x, y, and clock error. Elevation (or z) is not computed for 2D points, causing increased error in the horizontal (x, y) measurement. The effect of elevation was evaluated on 234 2D GPS data points. These points were collected and corrected at elevation intervals of true elevation, +-25 meters, +- 50 meters, and +-75 meters. These 2D points were then compared to surveyed points to measure the effect vertical error has on horizontal accuracy. In general, the more error in the vertical estimate during correction, the greater the horizontal error.

This thesis includes a study of a touch-free sensor systems and different principles for measuring a magnetic field. An in-depth study was conducted to describe two important principles in these contexts, i.e. Magnetoresistance principle and the Hall Effect principle. A market evaluation of different sensor chips developed on these principles was conducted. Furthermore, the study should be linked to existing principles to determine the position of a rotating axis. Function tests show that the performance requirement for each component was met. The results based on verification tests show that it is important to have a better mechanical connection between drive and device. Temperature tests show that the system meets the project specification at room temperature, but large angular deviations occur in temperature change, especially when driving with short steps. This thesis can be continued by reprogramming the source code and developing new software that can control more parameters and make it more accurate at positioning. Another recommendation would be to investigate and compare other sensor chips because there are several sensors that can apply to the system. Further improvements can be made by performing more tests on the system.

Detta arbete kan fortsättas genom omprogrammering av källkoden och utveckling av ny programvara som kan styra fler parametrar och göra det mer exakt vid positionsbestämning. En annan rekommendation skulle vara att undersöka och jämföra andra sensorchip eftersom det finns flera sensorer som kan tillämpa i systemet. Ytterligare förbättringar kan göras genom att utföra fler tester på systemet.

Closed Chain Mechanisms are popular in Automation Technology for transmitting motion under specific objective task. Single-Degree of Freedom (DoF) Four-bar chain is basic mechanisms synthesized for such applications. Joint clearances and drive backlash are inevitable in such mechanisms and introduce error in coupler positions while accomplishing the task. The present paper considers effect of joint clearances and drive backlash as error source for coupler positions in single-DoF mechanism. The deviations of desired positions and actual positions are estimated for specific objective task. Further, effect of these error sources is modelled with a higher-DoF mechanism which is kinematically better than single-DoF mechanisms. Two-DoF mechanism is modelled for identical objective task. Maximum positional deviations are estimated for two-DoF mechanism. The comparative analysis of deviation is obtained. Relative maximum positional deviation in both mechanisms is expressed in terms of dimensionless number as measure of performance.

High Grain Protein Content (GPC) is a desirable trait in breadmaking and pasta wheat varieties because of its positive effects on quality and nutritional value. However, selection for GPC is limited by our poor understanding of the genes involved in the accumulation of protein in the grain. The long-term goal of this project is to provide a better understanding of the genes controlling GPC in wheat. The specific objectives of this project were: a) to develop a high-density genetic map of the GPC gene in tetraploid wheat, b) to construct a T. turgidum Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) library, c) to construct a physical map of the GPC gene and identify a candidate for the GPC gene. A gene with a large effect on GPC was detected in Triticum turgidum var. dicoccoides and was previously mapped in the short arm of chromosome 6B. To define better the position of the Gpc-B1 locus we developed homozygous recombinant lines with recombination events within the QTL region. Except for the 30-cM region of the QTL these RSLs were isogenic for the rest of the genome minimizing the genetic variability. To minimize the environmental variability the RSLs were characterized using 10 replications in field experiments organized in a Randomized Complete Block Design, which were repeated three times. Using this strategy, we were able to map this QTL as a single Mendelian locus (Gpc-B1) on a 2.6-cM region flanked by RFLP markers Xcdo365 and Xucw67. All three experiments showed that the lines carrying the DIC allele had an average absolute increase in GPC of 14 g/kg. Using the RFLP flanking markers, we established the microcolinearity between a 2.l-cM region including the Gpc-B1 gene in wheat chromosome 6BS and a 350-kb region on rice chromosome 2. Rice genes from this region were used to screen the Triticeae EST collection, and these ESTs were used to saturate the Gpc-B1 region with molecular markers. With these new markers we were able to map the Gpc-B1 locus within a 0.3-cM region flanked by PCR markers Xucw83 and Xucw71. These flanking markers defined a 36-kb colinear region with rice, including one gene that is a potential candidate for the Gpc-B1 gene. To develop a physical map of the Gpc-B1 region in wheat we first constructed a BAC library of tetraploid wheat, from RSL#65 including the high Gpc-B1 allele. We generated half- million clones with an average size of l3l-kb (5.1 X genome equivalents for each of the two genomes). This coverage provides a 99.4% probability of recovering any gene from durum wheat. We used the Gpc-BI flanking markers to screen this BAC library and then completed the physical map by chromosome walking. The physical map included two overlapping BACs covering a region of approximately 250-kb, including two flanking markers and the Gpc-B1 gene. Efforts are underway to sequence these two BACs to determine if additional wheat genes are present in this region. Weare also developing new RSLs to further dissect this region. We developed PCR markers for flanking loci Xucw79andXucw71 to facilitate the introgression of this gene in commercial varieties by marker assisted selection (httQ://maswheat.ucdavis.edu/ orotocols/HGPC/index.hlm). Using these markers we introgressed the Gpc-B1 gene in numerous pasta and common wheat breeding lines.

High Grain Protein Content (GPC) of wheat is important for improved nutritional value and industrial quality. However, selection for this trait is limited by our poor understanding of the genes involved in the accumulation of protein in the grain. A gene with a large effect on GPC was detected on the short arm of chromosome 6B in a Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides accession from Israel (DIC, hereafter). During the previous BARD project we constructed a half-million clones Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) library of tetraploid wheat including the high GPC allele from DIC and mapped the GPC-B1 locus within a 0.3-cM interval. Our long-term goal is to provide a better understanding of the genes controlling grain protein content in wheat. The specific objectives of the current project were to: (1) complete the positional cloning of the GPC-B1 candidate gene; (2) characterize the allelic variation and (3) expression profile of the candidate gene; and (4) validate this gene by using a transgenic RNAi approach to reduce the GPC transcript levels. To achieve these goals we constructed a 245-kb physical map of the GPC-B1 region. Tetraploid and hexaploid wheat lines carrying this 245-kb DIC segment showed delayed senescence and increased GPC and grain micronutrients. The complete sequencing of this region revealed five genes. A high-resolution genetic map, based on approximately 9,000 gametes and new molecular markers enabled us to delimit the GPC-B1 locus to a 7.4-kb region. Complete linkage of the 7.4-kb region with earlier senescence and increase in GPC, Zn, and Fe concentrations in the grain suggested that GPC-B1 is a single gene with multiple pleiotropic effects. The annotation of this 7.4-kb region identified a single gene, encoding a NAC transcription factor, designated as NAM-B1. Allelic variation studies demonstrated that the ancestral wild wheat allele encodes a functional NAC transcription factor whereas modern wheat varieties carry a non-functional NAM-B1 allele. Quantitative PCR showed that transcript levels for the multiple NAMhomologues were low in flag leaves prior to anthesis, after which their levels increased significantly towards grain maturity. Reduction in RNA levels of the multiple NAMhomologues by RNA interference delayed senescence by over three weeks and reduced wheat grain protein, Zn, and Fe content by over 30%. In the transgenic RNAi plants, residual N, Zn and Fe in the dry leaves was significantly higher than in the control plants, confirming a more efficient nutrient remobilization in the presence of higher levels of GPC. The multiple pleiotropic effects of NAM genes suggest a central role for these genes as transcriptional regulators of multiple processes during leaf senescence, including nutrient remobilization to the developing grain. The cloning of GPC-B1 provides a direct link between the regulation of senescence and nutrient remobilization and an entry point to characterize the genes regulating these two processes. This may contribute to their more efficient manipulation in crops and translate into food with enhanced nutritional value. The characterization of the GPC-B1 gene will have a significant impact on wheat production in many regions of the world and will open the door for the identification of additional genes involved in the accumulation of protein in the grain.
