AbstractThis study determined if robotic-arm assisted total knee arthroplasty (RATKA) allows for more accurate and precise bone cuts and component position to plan compared with manual total knee arthroplasty (MTKA). Specifically, we assessed the following: (1) final bone cuts, (2) final component position, and (3) a potential learning curve for RATKA. On six cadaver specimens (12 knees), a MTKA and RATKA were performed on the left and right knees, respectively. Bone-cut and final-component positioning errors relative to preoperative plans were compared. Median errors and standard deviations (SDs) in the sagittal, coronal, and axial planes were compared. Median values of the absolute deviation from plan defined the accuracy to plan. SDs described the precision to plan. RATKA bone cuts were as or more accurate to plan based on nominal median values in 11 out of 12 measurements. RATKA bone cuts were more precise to plan in 8 out of 12 measurements (p ≤ 0.05). RATKA final component positions were as or more accurate to plan based on median values in five out of five measurements. RATKA final component positions were more precise to plan in four out of five measurements (p ≤ 0.05). Stacked error results from all cuts and implant positions for each specimen in procedural order showed that RATKA error was less than MTKA error. Although this study analyzed a small number of cadaver specimens, there were clear differences that separated these two groups. When compared with MTKA, RATKA demonstrated more accurate and precise bone cuts and implant positioning to plan.

Charging schemes utilizing mobile wireless chargers can be applied to prolong the lifespan of a wireless sensor network. In considering charging schemes with mobile chargers, most current studies focus on charging each sensor from a single position, then optimizing the moving paths of the chargers. However, in reality, a wireless charger may charge the same sensor from several positions in its path. In this paper we consider this fact and seek to minimize both the number of charging locations and the total required charging time. Two charging plans are developed. The first plan considers the charging time required by each sensor and greedily selects the charging service positions. The second one is a two-phase plan, where the number of charging positions is first minimized, then minimum charging times are assigned to every position according to the charging requirements of the nearby sensors. This paper also corrects a problem neglected by some studies in minimizing the number of charging service positions and further provides a corresponding solution. Empirical studies show that compared with other minimal clique partition (MCP)-based methods, the proposed charging plan may save up to 60% in terms of both the number of charging positions and the total required charging time.

<em>The growing number of Defined Contribution Plans available in the U.S. has presented many in the U.S. work force with investment decisions. Decisions many of these workers have not been faced with in the past. An analysis of the Survey of Consumer Finance data over the early portion of the sample period, 1992-2010 has shown that the annual average percentage of liquid retirement plan savings allocated to equity assets increased from 43.02% to 66.42%. In 2010, after the subprime crisis, the allocation to equity declined but remained high at 50.65%, even though the market in 2001 and 2008 changed the allocation for many participants. Researchers attempt to find the reason that retirement savings plan participants have chosen to take a riskier position over the years. After controlling for factors such as age and income classifications, this study finds the educational classification to be a significant factor in explaining the percentage that participants allocate to the relatively riskier assets.</em>

360-degree feedback is a personal development and appraisal tool designed to quantify the competencies and skills of fellow employees by tapping the collective experience of their superiors, subordinates, and peers. Substantially better than the hierarchical, single-source assessments employees are familiar with, this multi-source system provides participants with a comprehensive interpretation of their performance from numerous perspectives within the organization. The objective of this thesis is to develop a 360-degree feedback system tailored specifically for the Dean position, Graduate School of Business and Public Policy, Naval Postgraduate School. This thesis presents a literature review, a case description involving the Dean position, and discusses a series of interviews conducted with key groups of organizational stakeholders. With the results of this research confirming the need for and potential content of a feedback system, this thesis culminates by presenting 360- degree feedback procedures and documents created specifically for the Dean position.

As wind energy plants continue to grow in size and complexity, advanced measurement technologies such as scanning Doppler LiDAR are essential for assessing site conditions and prospecting new development areas.   The RUNE project was initiated to determine best practices for the use of scanning LiDARs in resource assessments for near shore wind farms. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the optimum configuration for the plan position indicator (PPI) scan type of a scanning LiDAR. A task specific Automated Analysis Software (AAS) is created, and the sensitivity of the integrated velocity azimuth process (iVAP) reconstruction algorithm is examined using sector sizes ranging from 4 to 60 degrees. Further, a comparison to simultaneous dual Doppler measurement is presented in order to determine the necessity of deploying two LiDARs rather than one.    DTU has developed a coordinated long range coherent scanning multi-LiDAR array (the WindScanner system) based on modified Leosphere WindCube 200S devices and an application specific software framework and communication protocol. The long range WindScanner system was deployed at DTU’s test station in Høvsøre, Denmark and measurement data was collected over a period of 7 days. One WindScanner was performing 60 degree sector scans, while two others were placed in staring dual Doppler mode. All three beams were configured to converge atop a 116.5m instrumented meteorological mast.   A significant result was discovered which indicates that the accuracy of the reconstructed measurements do not differ significantly between sector sizes of 30 and 60 degrees. Using the smallest sector size which does not introduce systematic error has numerous benefits including: increasing the scan speed, measurement distance and angular resolution.   When comparing collocated dual Doppler, sector scan and in-situ met-mast instrumentation, we find very good agreement between all techniques. Dual Doppler is able to measure wind speeds within 0.1%, and 60 degree sector scan within 0.2% on average of the reference values. For retrieval of wind direction, the sector scan approach performs particularly well. This is likely attributable to lower errors introduced by the assumption of flow field homogeneity over the scanned area, in contract to wind direction which tends to be more non-uniform. For applications such as site resource assessments, where generally accurate 10 minute wind speed and direction values are required, a scanning LiDAR performing PPI scans with a sector size of between 30 and 38 degrees is recommended. The laser’s line of sight path should be directed parallel to the predominant wind direction and at the lowest elevation angle possible.

The study sheds light on pupils individual plans of development and portfolios from the perspective of children. It has an ethnographic standpoint. It was carried out on children and pupils in pre-school, pre-school class and third grade. By further investigating how children and pupils use their individual development plans and portfolios, in which settings and to whom they communicate them, this study is able to grasp the discourse that is created around the instrument itself. This study is also interested in and aims to find the theoretical frame, in essence, which envelops both the construction of childhood and children’s own activities within the limitations and opportunities that this structure offers. By focusing on micro, hereby meaning the thoughts and perceptions of children and pupils themselves, and on macro, such as the structure around the children and pupils, the aim of finding the previously mentioned theoretical space is fulfilled. The study was carried out by means of an ethnographic method, with conversations, interviews, surveys, observations and filming. The results show that children and pupils view their individual developmental plans and portfolios as an affordance, both in a physical sense and as an offer of a symbolic space, a space shared by others but with the same significance for all. It is also apparent that the children and pupils use their individual development plans to ascertain their positions, to show who they are.

Um fundo de pensões é um produto de investimentos, onde cada membro desse fundo paga contribuições para na idade de reforma receber uma pensão. Este á uma definição de fundos de pensões é extremamente simples, ao comparar com fundos de pensões provenientes do Reino Unido, onde eles são bastante complexos e específicos. Este relatório resulta de um estágio realizado no escritório de Lisboa da Willis Towers Watson, na área de Fundos de Pensões, onde a maioria do trabalho desempenhado foi em relação a avaliações atuariais de fundos de pensões do Reino Unido. O objetivo principal deste projeto é analisar as diferentes formas de avaliar a posição de financiamento de um fundo de pensões, tendo em conta a escolha dos pressupostos. Como resultado desse estudo teremos uma análise prática do impacto dos pressupostos escolhidos nos resultados obtidos. Neste estudo foram usados dois esquemas, com os quais trabalhei durante o meu estágio curricular. Academicamente, este relatório de estágio contribuiu bastante para o meu conhecimento quanto á avaliação do nível de financiamento de um fundo de pensões, bem como para a aplicação prática de conhecimento adquirido durante o meu mestrado, em áreas como modelos de sobrevivência, cálculo de pensões, mercados financeiros, entre outros
A pension fund is defined as an investment product in which the members of the scheme pay contributions in order to receive an income at retirement. This is a very simplistic definition when compared to the United Kingdom's Pension funds, which are complex and very specific financial products. This report is a result of an internship at the Willis Towers Watson Lisbon office, in the area of retirement, where the main scope of the work was in UK pension schemes' Actuarial Valuations. The main goal of this project is to study the different ways of measuring the funding position of a pension scheme, regarding the setting of assumptions. This will result in a practical demonstration of the impact of the defined assumptions on the results obtained. In order to do that, two pension schemes will be used, from companies that have been the focus of the internship. For academic purposes, this internship report contributes to a better understanding on measuring the funding position of pension schemes, and also on the application of knowledge obtained in the master's, for example on survival models, life annuities, financial markets and other subjects/topics.

Syftet med studien är att ur ett diskursteoretiskt perspektiv beskriva rådande diskurs och inom diskursen tillgängliga subjektspositioner, då sju gymnasieelever beskriver sina åtgärdsprogram på högskoleförberedande program. Resultatet visar att det råder samstämmighet bland eleverna kring att de har fått åtgärdsprogram upprättade eftersom de ligger efter i skolarbetet och att de ligger på betyget F i en eller flera kurser. Resultatet visar vidare att det inte råder samstämmighet bland eleverna kring hur det kommer sig att de ligger efter och riskerar F, och att det heller inte råder samstämmighet kring hur åtgärdsprogrammet har bidragit till förbättrade resultat. Resultatet visar att det i elevernas beskrivningar också framkommer att de har ett flertal subjektspositioner tillgängliga inom diskursen. Av dessa tillgängliga subjektspositioner intar samtliga elever i studien subjektspositionen elev som riskerar att få F. Likaså visar resultatet att samtliga elever intar en subjektsposition som innebär att han eller hon inte är ovanlig.
The aim of this study is to describe, from a discourse theoretical perspective, the prevailing discourse and the subject positions available within this discourse among sevens pupils attending higher education preparatory programmes at Upper Secondary Schools in Sweden. The discourse emerges in qualitative interviews where the pupils talk about their experiences of individual educational plans. The result shows that concordance prevails among the pupils about the fact that their individual educational plans have been drawn up because they have fallen behind in their school work, and because they run the risk of having grade F. Furthermore, the result shows that concordance does not prevail among the pupils when it comes to why they have fallen behind in their school work or how the individual educational plan has helped to improve the results. The result shows that in the pupils’ descriptions several subject positions appear as accessible within the discourse. All pupils accept the subject position of a pupil running the risk of getting an F, likewise they all accept a subject position that signifies that he or she is not an unusual or special pupil.

AbstractThe book’s introduction, Landscape as Development, introduces the distinct positions of critic and planner in development and offers initial justifications for a “critical” practice of ecological planning, as construed by landscape architecture. Landscape architecture has the most substantial ecological mandate among its sister disciplines of architecture and urban planning and has made significant recent historical contributions to development planning, including being the origin of modern landscape ecology and geographic information systems science. In order to become “critical,” landscape architecture, as planning, must recognize the contradictions between urban or economic sustainability and the critical social theory undercurrents in sustainable development. We introduce a working definition of “critical landscape planning” as it is developed throughout the book: A practice of critical landscape planning, routed in landscape architecture, uses multiple forms of sustainability to plan for landscapes engaging in (or encountering) development. The critical landscape planner holds a cultural-technological position and simultaneously applies science to specific site conditions, is critical of that science, and in the process and practice of applying it, refines and deepens the relevant scope of work. This introduction finishes by covering the structure of this book.

AbstractNaso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) injuries constitute about 5% of facial fractures and most of them are as a result of road traffic accidents. Deformities in the region tend to be more cosmetically apparent. Considering the proximity of the area to critical structures like brain and eye, such injuries need to be thoroughly evaluated both clinically and radiologically to understand the extent of the injury as well as initiate emergency management if required prior to constituting a definitive treatment plan. CT scans are the most useful investigation modality. Identification and maintaining the attachment of Medial canthal ligament in appropriate position along with reducing / stabilizing the bony fracture is the key to getting good results in these fractures. Primary management of the deformity produces better results compared to secondary correction.

On a nuclear sustainable development perspective, it is necessary to develop a closed fuel cycle (CFC) system and also take great efforts to improve natural uranium (NU) utilization ratio of thermal reactor. CANDU is great certainty to play an important role in this strategy. This paper presents CNNC Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Company Limited (TQNPC) efforts of being develop the engineering technologies of recycling reprocessed uranium (RU) and nuclear use of thorium (Th) resource in CANDU type reactor and finding the CANDU’s position in Chinese CFC system. Also this paper provides a proposal of implementation plan for Chinese CFC system development and also for application of the related CANDU engineering technologies.

Abstract In the quest for ever finer levels of technology integration, mechanical linkages reach their precision limits at about 5micrometers per meter of workspace. Beyond this physical limit, all six dimensional degrees of freedom need to be precisely ascertained to account for mechanical imperfections. This paper substantiates Wu’s vision of “precision machines without precision machinery.” A formulation and statistical characterization of position and orientation error propagation in rigid bodies are presented for two extreme models of measurement. It is shown that error distribution is uniquely dependent upon the design of the measurement plan. The theoretical foundations presented were evolved in the course of designing precision machinery. Other potential applications include: fixture design, metrology, and geometric tolerance verification.

Abstract In earlier papers [2][3] we showed how accurate position measurement and error propagation is completely characterized by a measurement plan. Among the various position sensor designs of interest, we pointed out that some spatially unresolved measurement plans are of particular value. Because the measurement plan is invariant for some degrees of freedom of the system, they offer an unusually large depth of field. The case in point is a measurement plan designed to capture the five components of motion errors for machine elements in translation. This paper focuses on the design of an optical sensor that makes this measurement plan feasible. High resolution translational error measurements over large depth of field were achieved due to a novel interferometer system. Design, implementation and testing are disclosed in this paper. The interferometer features the detection of transverse two-dimensional displacements in one measurement with a resolution of 80 nanometers over a depth of field up to one meter. The main originality of this interferometer is that it does not use wavelength, but rather the geometry of the fringe pattern to derive measurements. Thus the sensor was demonstrated to remain accurate under environmental variation that normally plague other interferometers. It is expected that this novel sensor design can refine resolution of precision machinery down to about 100 nm/m without the extent of environmental constraints and cost usually affiliated with the technology.

In this paper, a new kind of 6-legged robot is presented. It was designed for drilling holes on the aircraft surface. Each leg of the robot is a 3-DOF parallel mechanism and the actuation can be controlled both by position and force. The mechanism design method of the robot is discussed. The relationship between control method and motion topology under different working conditions is studied. The kinematical model is built, based on which the motion plan are made. The control method is position-force control, so the calculation of actuation force is done. Finally, the simulation result is showed: the robot can drill on the fuselage surface successfully and the position-force control method can improve its performance a lot.

Global popularity of football (soccer) has led to implementation of scientific and technolog-ical knowledge in its everyday use. One of such things that has been expanding in recent years is the application of various technologies for monitoring running performance during trainings and matches. The aim of this study was to evaluate match running performance of professional football/soccer players during oficial matches by using global positioning sys-tem (GPS) technology, and to compare it among playing positions. One hundred and one match performance of “Hajduk” team in 14 matches of Croatian Football League season 2018/2019 were used for this study. The activities of the players were monitored using GPS technology (Catapult S5 and X4 devices, Melbourne, Australia) with a sampling frequency of 10 Hz. Total distance covered, distance in different speed cat-egories, total and high intensity accelerations and decelerations were analyzed for players in five different playing positions: central defenders (n=26), full-backs (n=24), midfielders (n=33), wingers (n=10), and forwards (n=8). Additionally, running performances were cor-related with InStat index, regular performance indicator which is calculated on the basis of unique set of key parameters for each position (12 to 14 factors). Average total distance covered during match was 10.3 km, with midfielders covering larg-est (11.1 km) and central backs covering smallest average distance (9.3 km). Playing po-sitions differed significantly in high intensity running (F-test = 21.97 and 18.84, p 25 km/h, respectively). The side positions (wingers and full-backs) covered highest-, while central defenders covered lowest-average distance (914, 775, and 376 m, respectively). The wingers had highest number of high intensity accelerations and decelerations (> 3 m/s2; F-test = 16.56 and 17.98, p 0.5 m/s2; F-test = 6.57, and 15.26, p < 0.01, respectively). InStat index was not correlated with data ob-tained by GPS measurement. Results from this study indicate that running demands differ depending on playing positions so these findings should be applied in creating training plan and program. Future studies should evaluate data from multiple teams for getting more applicable findings.

The California State Rail Plan (CSRP) is among the best rail plan documents published by any jurisdiction in the United States to date. As such, the CSRP is used in this paper as the basis of comparison to other state rail service plans. These plans will have been submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on record as of June 2020—as required under Section 303 of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act (PRIIA) of 2008. The purpose of this paper is to identify the best practices and gaps that may inform California and other states in their future rail service plan development. This paper is grounded in the realization that, while the general outline of FRA requirements is uniform for all states, the actual content and inclusion of these requirements in the myriad state plans varies greatly. For example, California was granted an exception to help update FRA Rail Plan Guidance for its 2018 Rail Plan, other states have complained that FRA guidance and requirements on rail service planning have put state rail agencies in the position of constantly writing plans with little or no time to implement them. Throughout this research, the authors identify all the elements of FRA guidelines as reflected in the CSRP and rail plans of other states. This report also identifies the best features and planning strategies that may inform and improve the state rail planning process going forward, steps that will positively contribute to the public benefit of enhanced rail systems.

In May and June 2018, and April 2021, the Gulf Coast Network (GULN) surveyed shoreline position at Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) as a part of the NPS Vital Signs Monitoring Program. Monitoring was conducted following methods detailed in Monitoring Shoreline Position at Gulf Coast Network Parks: Protocol Implementation Plan (PIP; Bracewell 2017). Shoreline change was calculated using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System developed by USGS (Theiler et al. 2008). Key findings from this effort are as follows: In Florida, the mean shoreline change rate from 2018 to 2021 was -7.10 meters/year (-23.3 feet[ft]/year) with a standard deviation of 5.01 meters (16.4 ft) with approximately 95% of transects exhibiting landward retreat. In Mississippi, the mean change in island width from 2018 to 2021 was -7.46 meters/year (-24.5 ft/year) with a standard deviation of 12.49 meters (41.0 ft) with approximately 73% of transects exhibiting a loss in width. This project is in the early phases of implementation and will benefit from future surveys to better understand the influence of slight changes in survey timing and other environmental variations.

To demonstrate the value of research and its implementation, the Governor’s Office requested an annual financial analysis of the INDOT Research Program to determine the return on the research investment (ROI). The current financial analysis is for research projects that completed in FY 2020. Analyses on previous year’s projects is necessary primarily due to the time it takes some project outcomes to be implemented, extending into the following year. Therefore, the FY 2020 analysis is completed in calendar 2021. The ROI analysis will supplement the annual IMPACT report by adding a more rigorous quantitative benefit cost analysis (BCA) to the Research Program. Previous financial analyses used the approach of calculating net present values of cash flows to determine a benefit cost ratio and this report uses the same approach. Additionally, an overall program rate of return (ROI) is reported and will be accumulated over time into a rolling 5-year average. While the quantitative benefit cost analysis (BCA) was rigorous, results are limited to projects where benefits and costs could be quantified, where data is available to perform a quantitative analysis. Qualitative benefits are highlighted in the companion annual IMPACT report (https://www.in.gov/indot/files/Research-Program-Impact-Report.pdf ). In 2018, INDOT unveiled its new Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan guides the priority research needs of the Research Program and in turn the research results support accomplishing the INDOT Strategic Plan, Strategic Objectives. A new Strategic Objective has been added to the INDOT Strategic Plan addressing Innovation & Technology. Additionally, INDOT created a new Office of Innovation. While the Research Program supports all of INDOT’s Strategic Objectives, these new initiatives have further highlighted the importance of research and its role in achieving the Strategic Objectives outlined in the new INDOT Strategic Plan. There has been more emphasis of new research needs related to new technology changes and transformational technologies. This will help position INDOT for future growth, adoption of new technologies and partnering opportunities. These new research projects will provide large qualitative ROI, however are difficult to quantify due to their complexity and newness.

The objectives of this project were to develop the tools and methodologies for positional cloning of genes in tomato and apply them for the cloning a Fusarium resistance gene - I2.. The feasibility of positional cloning of disease resistance genes was demonstrated for Pto which confers resistance to pseudomonas (Martin et al. 1993). The Fusarium resistance gene was mapped genetically and physically and was found to be in close proximity to TG 105 (Segal et al. 1992). To obtain fine mapping of gene I2, and additional target genes in future projects, a high density linkage map was developed (Tanksley et al. 1992; Broun and Tanksley 1993). In addition two permanent mapping populations were constructed: a recombinant inbred (Paran et al. 1995; Zamir et al. 1993) and an introgression line population (Eshed et al. 1992; Eshed and Zamir 1994). Using these resources we determined that the I2 locus shows complete co-segregation, down to a resolution of a few Kb, with SL8 which shows architectural similarity with other plant resistance genes. Transformation and complementation analysis is in progress (Ori et al. in preparation).
