SUMMARYAnts are among the worst invasive species, and can have tremendous negative impacts on native biodiversity, agriculture, estates, property and human health. Invasive ants are extremely difficult to control, and thus early detection is essential to prevent ant invasions, in particular through surveillance efforts at ports of entry. This paper assesses the potential distribution of 14 of the worst invasive ant species in France, under current and future climatic conditions. Consensus species distribution models, using five different modelling techniques, three global climate models and two CO2 emission scenarios, indicated that France presented suitable areas for 10/14 species, including five listed on the Invasive Species Specialist Group's selection of the world's 100 worst invasive species. Among these 10 species, eight were predicted to increase their potential range with climate change. Areas with the highest concentration of potential invaders were mainly located along the coastline, especially in the south-west of France, but all departments appeared to be climatically suitable for at least two invasive species. A ranking of climatic suitability per species for 17 major airports and 14 maritime ports indicated that the ports of entry with the highest suitability were located in Biarritz, Toulon and Nice, and the species with the greatest potential distribution in France were Lasius neglectus and Linepithema humile, followed by Solenopsis richteri, Pheidole megacephala and Wasmannia auropunctata.

The paper aims to outline the circumstances that led France to conclude a treaty with Japan in the second half of the 19th century. The traditional historiographical approach to the issue of the opening of Japan’s ports highlights the American role or Commodore Perry’s mission of 1853 or analogically focuses on British, Russian, and Dutch policy in the Far East. However, France was one of the European states that had so far shown interest in Japanese ports in establishing trade relations. The paper aims to describe French activities in the Far East in relation to Japan, considering the missionary activity in the Ryukyu Islands and the actions of French admirals who attempted to open Japanese ports of their own accord in the 1840s. The core of the paper focuses on the first half of the 1850s and related French attempts to sign an agreement with Japan considering international circumstances.

ABSTRACTHistories of individual whale fisheries mainly undertaken by Europeans have yet to be written. This article provides an outline history of whaling in the Davis Strait area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Current knowledge is reviewed of whaling west of Greenland by ships from Danish, Dutch and German ports, and from English, American and Scottish ports. The land-based West Greenland whale fishery is also mentioned, and the activities of whalers from France and Spain. In spite of recent national whaling histories of the English, Dutch and Danish industries, quantitative data for the Davis Strait fishery are still virtually non-existent.

L'activité des ports maritimes représente un enjeu économique et financier majeur pour l'économie nationale. La mutation des échanges internationaux ainsi que la réalisation du marché unique placent l'ensemble des ports européens dans un contexte fortement soumis à la concurrence. Cela suppose de très fortes contraintes de qualité du service portuaire (temps, fiabilité, sécurité). De nouveaux acteurs portuaires sont dès lors apparus : les acteurs privés qui interviennent davantage par des prises de participation dans l'investissement. La localisation des ports sur le domaine public, et les contraintes des règles de la domanialité étaient autant d'obstacles au développement des investissements privés. Afin d'y remédier, une réforme de la domanialité publique a été entreprise. De plus, la politique portuaire est directement concernée par la politique de la concurrence et la politique des transports définies au niveau de l'Union européenne. Promouvoir le secteur portuaire par un certain nombre de mesures visant à améliorer ses performances globales. Ces actions ont pour but d'améliorer l'efficacité des ports, de lever les obstacles à la libre prestation de service et d'encourager l'amélioration des ports et des infrastructures portuaires
The activity of seaports represents a major economic and financial stake for the state economy. The transfer of the international exchanges as well as the realization of the single market place all the European ports in a context strongly subjected to the competition. It supposes very strong quality constraints of the harbour service (time, reliability, safety). New harbour actors appeared from then on: the private actors who intervene more by acquisitions of holdings in the investment. The localization of ports on the public domain, and the constraints of the rules of the national state were so many obstacles to the development of the private investments. To remedy it, a reform of the national state was begun. Furthermore, the harbour policy is directly concerned by the policy of the competition and the policy of transport defined at the level of the European Union. Promote the harbour sector by a certain number of measures aiming at improving ,its global performances. These actions aim at improving the efficiency of ports, at raising the obstacles to the free provision of a service and at encouraging the improvement of ports and harbour facilities

Ce département présente plusieurs caractères originaux en matière d'équipements portuaires de plaisance : le rejet des ports - marinas et la préférence pour les structures de dimensions plus modestes ; une inégale distribution géographique des ports de plaisance, liée aux diverses conditions physiques et humaines du milieu côtier ; une clientèle de " plaisanciers - residants " attachés à une plaisance de proximité, aux moyens modestes mais à la pratique confirmée ; enfin, un désir d'equipement né davantage d'une volonté collective que de l'appétit de quelques promoteurs. Les ports de plaisance, pôles d'activités nautiques et touristiques, participent à la structuration du littoral Finistérien. The maritime vocation of Finistere has been reinforced for the last 30 years by the outstanding expansion of pleasure sailing. This department presents several specific characteristics as far as sailing harbour equipments are concerned : marinas have been rejected to the advantage of smaller units ; the yachting harbours have been set up with an irregular geographical distribution depending on the physical and human conditions of the coastal environment ; their customers are mainly composed of local sailors with a marked preference for a close sailing area, with fairly small incomes but a well-established sailing practice : the need for equipments has arisen more from a collective will than from the cupidity of some covetous property developers. Après 1870, le développement des échanges intercontinentaux transforme l'économie maritime et justifie un nécessaire aménagement des ports français, Le port du Havre objet de notre démonstration, est directement concerné par les nouvelles conditions du commerce international. La gestion des ports localement est entre les mains des chambres de commerce, confrontées aussi bien à l'augmentation du tonnage des navires et à la concurrence qu'aux difficultés de réalisation des travaux indispensables à la modernisation des ports et à leur financement La nécessité d'une réforme des ports de commerce s'impose mais laquelle? Dès le début du XX siècle les pouvoirs publics se mettent au travail. Cependant, on assiste à un décalage entre ce que souhaitent les collectivités locales et les objectifs administratifs qui se traduit par l'abandon du premier texte de loi de 1912. La première guerre mondiale est décisive dans l'évolution des débats. Une réforme s'adaptant à l'industrialisation en cours et réaffirmant la haute autorité de l'État sur les rouages économiques triomphe. Le régime de l'autonomie définit par la loi du 12 juin 1920 consacre le regroupement des différents services portuaires entre les mains d'un directeur, un conseil d'administration décide des orientations et gère un budget propre sous l'autorité du ministère des Travaux Publics, La réforme est appliquée au Havre à partir de 1925. Depuis trente ans que le nautisme s'est developpe, le littoral s'est transforme en espace recreatif. En bretagne, une nebuleuse quasi-continue de ports de plaisance parvient a jalonner toute la cote. Produits d'appel indispensables au developpement des stations de bord de mer, plutot qu'equipements destines au service des plaisanciers, les ports de plaisance sont associes aux interets economiques touristiques des communes littorales bretonnes. Malgre l'ampleur du developpement, aucune politique regionale n'a conduit cet amenagement. Ce sont plutot les ports de plaisance qui se sont imposes comme elements structurants du developpement touristique. La politique nationale d'amenagement du littoral, tres generale, et partagee entre le respect de l'environnement et le soutien du developpement economique, aboutit a une reglementation peu efficace, autorisant les forces locales a imposer les formes du developpement touristique
The last thirty years over which yachting has developed have turned the coastline into an entertainement area. In brittany, a quasi-continuous nebula of marinas is now marking out the entire coastline. Conceived as enticing elements essential to the development of the sea-side resorts rather than as equipments meant to service the yacht men, the marinas are connected to the economic and touristic interests of the coastal breton communes. In spite of its wide scope, this development was controlled by no regional policy whatsoever. One might rather say that the marinas compelled recogfnition as structuring elements of the touristic development. The national policy of coastline development, very general in nature, and torn between respect fot the environment and support to economic development, has led to a hardly efficient set of rules which permits the local authorities to impose their choice of touristic development models

Les ports de commerce moyens ont ete peu etudies par les geographes maritimistes. Pourtant, dans le contexte francais, si l'on distingue les six ports autonomes (implicitement de grands ports) des autres organismes portuaires metropolitains, on constate alors que ces derniers manipulent plus de 20% du commerce maritime exterieur de l'hexagone. Cette participation, loin d'etre negligeable, est parailleurs en progression constante depuis les annees 70. La these approche le role et la place des ces sites secondaires sur le versant manche-atlantique francais et tente d'apprecier leurs evolutions dans un contexte de mutation et d'internationalisation du secteur maritime. L'etude s'oriente, dans un premier temps, vers une reflexion methodologique (precision de la notion de port moyen) puis explore le cadre politique francais mais aussi celui d'une europe des transports en construction. L'analyse des filieres de marchandises animant ces ports moyens rappelle que leur activite s'exprime avant tout dans la persistance d'orientations dominantes profondement ancrees. Sur la facade atlantique, il s'agit des trafics d'incitation agricole alors que sur les rivages de la manche, il s'agit de l'activite rouliere avec les iles britanniques. Il s'avere cependant que ces orientations dominantes, meme si elles generent d'imposants volumes et de substantiels revenus, particulierement pour le transmanche, confinent les sites qu'elles utilisent dans des fonctions peu nobles qui les transforment en simples ports couloirs ou d'evacuation. L'examen des autres flux commerciaux permet, d'une part, de distinguer l'expression de quelques strategies locales etablies sur la maitrise de gisements de fret a forte valeur ajoutee et d'autre part, d'entrevoir un recent mouvement de diversification de l'activite de certains ports moyens qui accedent aujourd'hui a la manutention des conteneurs.

Alors que le transport fluvial et les ports fluviaux ont contribué au développement des métropoles, ils ont respectivement connu depuis 1945 une chute des trafics et une déconnexion progressive du tissu urbain. Les modes de production et de distribution des marchandises suivent aujourd'hui une logique routière, mais les politiques de transport, européennes, nationales et métropolitaines, encouragent de plus en plus le recours à des échanges plus durables. L'Ile-de-France, qui se distingue des pays de l'Europe du Nord en termes d'infrastructures et comme en termes de débouchés portuaires, connait néanmoins une croissance des trafics fluviaux. Cette croissance est à mettre en lien avec la présence d'une grande métropole fluviale et d'un ensemble de sites portuaires. Cette thèse met en évidence l'organisation portuaire et des échanges fluviaux à l'échelle de l'Ile-de-France et de l'axe Seine. Elle montre l'originalité de cette organisation en Europe et le fait qu'elle ne se retrouve pas dans d'autres grandes villes européennes. Pour établir ce fait, il s'avère utile de recourir à la fois à l'analyse statistique des trafics portuaires et à des entretiens auprès des acteurs portuaires et métropolitains pour cerner les contradictions entre leurs attentes et leurs démarches respectives. Les résultats soulignent une adaptation des sites portuaires aux besoins de la métropole, par l'autorité portuaire qui a encouragé la spécialisation des trafics et leur mise en réseau, afin de justifier leur présence dans les territoires urbains. L'autorité portuaire Ports de Paris a ainsi dû développer une politique d'aménagement et d'insertion urbaine de ses sites à l'échelle régionale. Cependant, le manque de coordination et de compréhension entre les acteurs portuaires et urbains est le principal frein, pour l'acceptabilité des sites portuaires dans les territoires métropolitains
While waterways and inland ports have contributed to the development of cities, since 1945 they have respectively known a traffic decrease and a progressive disconnection from the urban area. Actual freight production and distribution use road-only mode, but European, national and metropolitan transport policies encourage more sustainable mode of transport. Although the Ile-de-France region is disadvantaged in terms of infrastructure and maritime ports opportunities facing the countries of Northern Europe, Seine river traffic is growing. A large river metropolis and a set of inland ports may explain this feature. This doctoral thesis aims to identify how river ports have followed a different organization from other European territories, due to the presence of Paris. It is therefore useful to use both statistical analysis of port traffic and interviews with Port Authority and metropolitan actors, to identify contradictions in their expectations and their respective approaches. The results highlight an adaptation of inland port to the needs of the metropolis, through traffic specialization and networking, in order to justify their presence in urban areas. Hence, the Port Authority Ports de Paris has developed a policy planning to ensure urban integration of its inland ports. However, lack of coordination and understanding between Port Authority and urban actors are the main obstacles to the acceptability of inland ports in metropolitan areas

Cette thèse étudie les aires d'influence des ports : à terre (arrière-pays) et outre-mer (avant-pays). Elle s'inscrit dans un vaste débat scientifique sur l'impact du développement des réseaux sur les territoires. Dans le domaine spécifique des recherches maritimes et portuaires, le courant théorique dominant tend à relativiser le poids de la distance dans le choix du port, sous l'effet du développement de réseaux de toutes sortes. Pour illustrer ce déclin de la distance, certains auteurs évoquent l'exemple d'armements maritimes de conteneurs, qui proposent un même tarif de transport de porte à porte quelle que soit la localisation terrestre des clients. Afin de mesurer la portée et l'intensité de cette éventuelle déterritorialisation des flux maritimo-terrestres nous avons comparé les flux de commerce extérieur de la France avec des estimations obtenues à l'aide d'un modèle d'interaction spatiale. Les résultats de notre étude montrent que l'effet combiné de la masse (trafic) et de la distance terrestre continue de fournir une bonne explication de la distribution spatiale des flux portuaires.

Le site de Port-la-Nautique, à 4 km au sud de Narbonne, au bord des étangs, est connu de longue date comme un des avant-ports de Narbonne antique. Les nombreuses découvertes subaquatiques témoignent de l’importance des échanges qui s’y déroulaient. À partir de 2011 de nouvelles recherches dans une dépression marécageuse permirent de vérifier la présence d’un vivier. Il s’avère être par son plan (bassin circulaire avec salle à manger centrale) et ses proportions (67 m de diamètre) l’un des plus importants du monde romain. Il correspond aux modèles de viviers d’agrément associés aux riches villae connues sur la côte tyrrhénienne. Ce vivier exceptionnel amène à considérer l’habitat exploré anciennement sur le plateau au-dessus du port de la Nautique comme une villa maritime. Des prospections géophysiques ont permis d’en établir un premier plan et les opérations de fouilles sont en cours.

France was a country that had great agricultural potential and natural resources that allowed it to not be dependent on external markets, especially raw materials from the North. French ports, however, maintained close relations with the Baltic countries where they marketed many products and obtained supplies of naval stores and, depending on the economic situation, cereals. This paper proposes to revisit the French trade with the Baltic over a period of two centuries by using the Sound Toll Accounts whose entire data is now available to the research community. As we will see, several evidences are to be reconsidered.

Marinas located at the land-sea interface, are both subject to autochthonous sources of pollution and form a receptacle for terrigenous inputs from upstream areas resulting in the qualitative degradation. The objective of this project is to carry out a diagnosis of the chemical and microbiological contamination of the waters of the 4 ports located in the Gulf of Aigues Mortes (France) concerning a mutualized dredging operation. The originality of the results lies in the fact that they will allow not only to compare the chemical and microbiological qualities of the waters of the marinas, but also to determine the impact of the same type of dredging on the resuspension of contaminants in the water column

Amin Maalouf or Emin Maluf, was born on February 25, 1949, in Beirut. The author, who writes his books in French, has lived in France since 1976. The author was awarded the Goncourt Academy Literary Award in 1993 for his novel, The Rock of Tanios (Le Rocheɾ de Tanios). His books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have reached a wide audience in France and in many other countries. Amin Maalouf tells the history of the Middle East to Westerners in their own language. He owes his fame to historical novels. His first book, The Crusades through the Eyes of the Arabs, played an important role in his recognition as a great writer. Ports of Call, one of Maalouf's important works, tells the story of a person who was born in Lebanon, then went to France, took part in the resistance movement, and then returned to Lebanon to be greeted as a hero. The author states that his source of inspiration for this book was the life story of a person he met towards the end of the 1960s. It describes the divisions experienced in Palestine and Lebanon during World War II and offers implicit solutions to the events in the Middle East. This study aims to provide a spatial analysis of the locations where the events of the story take place.

Sediment accumulation at the bottom of ports disrupts maritime activities and disturbs the physicochemical balance of water bodies. In France, the maintenance of the 6500-kilometer long coastline would require the extraction of about 50 million m3 of marine sediments every year. For several years, these sediments were considered waste. However, they are increasingly being acknowledged as a resource in need of management. Several research studies were conducted to find valorization ways that satisfy technical and regulatory requirements. These sediments present interesting heterogeneous physicochemical, mineralogical, and geotechnical characteristics. However, they may contain contamination, which could limit their uses. This paper deals with the possibility of producing self-compacting backfills using dredged marine sediments, fly-ash, and hydraulic binders for public work applications. The impact of dredged sediments on the composition of self-compacting backfills was studied. Moreover, the impact of fly ash and binder type and percentage on the backfill behavior and mechanical properties was discussed.

This analysis, carried out within the Lettura e Progetto Laboratory of "Sapienza" University of Rome and based on the “processual” method, proposes the reconstruction, through the reading and interpretation of the formative process, of the urban settlement of Fiumicino, on the east coast of Rome . The area was formed by a set of fragmented interventions developed in different phases, with heterogeneous destinations and, apparently, no relation of necessity. The site appears mainly linked to the development of illegal buildings that date back to the second postwar period. However, a deeper analysis based on the reading and interpretation of the character of the building fabric, shows the existence of a clear relation of historical continuity between the today town and the territorial structures developed starting from the ancient city of Portus. Through this reading emerges the plan of a town connected to the activities of Porto Canale (Channel Port) in function since XVI Century. From the analysis of the historical cartography appears as a matrix route based on the continuation of the ancient via Portuense was formed in time and developed on the building routes that have resulted. We believe that this is a remarkable case study that exemplifies the formation of local identity at the edge of the metropolis as over time the area has developed a complex structure, connected to port activities, that is now forming its own urban character and individuality, so that recently it was constituted in autonomous municipality. Nel 2010, la base sottomarina di Saint-Nazaire è stata dichiarata «Patrimonio del XX secolo» dal Ministère de la Culture et de la Communnication francese ed è divenuta il simbolo di un nuovo approccio patrimoniale che riconosce il patrimonio materiale e immateriale in tutte le sue forme, non limitandosi soltando al manufatto certificato come monumento. La memoria, i beni materiali o i luoghi poco conosciuti hanno così contribuito a definire una nuova dimensione urbana proiettata verso il futuro. Riferirsi esplicitamente al tema del rapporto tra waterfront e patrimonio militare, attraverso l’esempio di Saint-Nazaire, ci porta a riflettere sul ruolo del progetto urbano nella trasformazione della città contemporanea. Gli stessi principi collegano tale caso di studio a molte altre operazioni di rigenerazione della città europea e, in particolare, delle città portuali francesi. A partire dagli anni ‘80, per far fronte alla crisi del settore industriale, alcune città portuali, tra cui Marsiglia, Le Havre, Saint-Nazaire e Dunkerque, hanno elaborato numerosi studi e progetti sulle loro aree industriali obsolete o abbandonate, al fine di potenziare le attività portuali e di destinare gli spazi resi liberi a nuove attività. Il riconoscimento del valore di risorsa urbana e patrimoniale a tali aree portuali ha consentito di riattivare dinamiche economiche, sociali e spaziali spesso interrotte o in disuso. In 2010 the submarine base in Saint-Nazaire was declared ‘Heritage of the XX century’ by the French Ministère de la Culture et de la Communnication. Thereafter it became the symbol of a new approach related to heritage that recognises the tangible and intangible heritage in all its forms, not only restricted to the artifact acknowledged as a ‘monument’. Remembrance, the material assets or the little known places have thus contributed to defining a new urban dimension projected toward the future. The case of Saint-Nazare, relating clearly to the relationship between waterfront and military heritage, encourages us to meditate on the role of urban design in the transformation of the contemporary city. The same principles connect this case study to several other redevelopment operations in the European city and, in particular, the French port cities. Starting from the '80s, in order to face the crisis in the industrial sector, several port cities, including Marseille, Le Havre, Dunkirk and Saint-Nazaire, produced diverse studies and projects regarding their obsolete or abandoned industrial areas, in order to boost port activities and to allocate the vacant places to new activities. Acknowledgment of the value of these port areas as urban resources (as well as cultural heritage) has consented the regeneration of (often previously interrupted or abandoned) economic, social and spatial activity.

Maritime transport historically represented the centre of global trade with about 90% of the goods’ volumes and values worldwide. Nowadays, containerships are built with the same basic design principles as the older smaller container ships, without accounting for possible consequences that could impact safety. In this perspective, cargo fire represents one of the most important threats for ships. On one hand, fire causes large losses of humans and/or cargoes, on the other hand fire is impacting coastal zone and marine protected areas causing unvaluable damages to the flora and fauna. Often, seafarers underestimate the dangerousness of the situation. This because, sometimes people are not always well trained and some confusion on the correct procedures to be adopted might lead to in a catastrophic situation. In this perspective, the European Union funded a research project based on innovative strategies for containership fires prevention and management. the European research goal is to prevent, detect, manage and response to fire accidents on board of containerships paving special attention to seafarer Safety Culture (SC) to better understand how seaman people perceive safety onboard and the company’s approach to safety management. Human Factors (HF) and Safety experts will closely work by setting a SC assessment framework which allows actors to identify, describe and structure their SC using a four-stage model of cognition. In particular, step 1 focuses on theoretical framework development. Step 2 focuses in identifying the overt parts of a safety system before focussing on the hidden layers of the system. In step 3 the hidden layers of the safety system will be scrutinised using exploratory systems constellations. Finally, step 4 encompassed the replication in other use cases. Furthermore, the research activity will develop a Digital Solution (DS) that will increase the overall situational awareness of accountable people to promptly react during fire accidents avoiding cascade effects. A novel training for seamen on fire management, based on the results of the project, will be executed to increase the readiness of first responders. Hence, the research activity proposes a truly new generation of digital fire management solutions to increase the safety and the SC of seafarers. The impact of the proposed solution will be initially evaluated by performing validation activities in simulated environment by utilising ad-hoc facilities in Italy and France respectively at Italian Maritime Academy Technologies (IMAT) centre and École nationale supérieure maritime (ENSM) centre. Afterwards, demonstration activities will be executed in a real environment where the HF and safety will closely work on the field with the involved actors to gather as much results as possible. Finally, in order to provide evidences of HF and safety results, the research activity selected five scenarios in different European countries: Genova port (Italy), Brest port (France), Valencia port (Spain), Bremen port (Germany) and Gdynia port (Poland).

A 2-D Phase-Field coupled Monte Carlo-Potts model, using PhasePot of vertically upwards continuous casting (VUCC) of oxygen free copper (OFCu) was investigated to reveal the grain growth morphology and the withdrawal parameters required to produce a high-quality homogeneity within the grain structure. A dynamic moving reference frame was used as an approximation to the complex withdrawal parameters. The simulation results were validated alongside cast rod grain structures produced under the same cast parameters, at Rautomead Ltd on a RS080 VUCC machine.
