Using survey data collected from a larger comparative survey project employing a multistage, stratified, random sampling design administered in 1994, this article analyzes the gender gap in political culture and participation in China. We found a persistent gender difference, with male respondents scoring significantly higher on media attention, political knowledge, interest, internal, and external efficacy, and non-electoral participation. In accounting for the gender gap, the article also attempts to validate the prevailing socialization, situational, and structural theories. In terms of socialization theory, we found that women respondents were more passive towards achievement, more accommodating in conflict situations, and had a higher preference for conflict mediation by traditional authority. These traits were also found to be negatively correlated with political culture and participation measures. There is also empirical support for structural explanations, where we found that (1) higher socio-economic groups were more politically engaged than those in the lower strata; (2) higher socio-economic status women are more politically engaged than those of lower socio-economic status women and men. For both socialization and structural theories, the gender gap persisted even when passivity and socio-economic status were controlled. Our tests of situation theory did not find that the level of domestic burden had a significant dampening effect on women political culture and participation, nor did we find that women in the child-bearing and rearing cohort had the widest gender gap in political culture and participation.

As discussions of the "New World Order" intensify, Muslims around theworld are increasingly questioning the relevance of this phrase to their livesand to the future of the ummah. For many Muslims, the popularization of thisterm signals a need to reexamine those processes that shape the transmissionof the Islamic worldview from one generation to the next. The proposed"New World Order" seems much too reminiscent of the "Old World Order,"an economic and political order characterized by the economic subservienceand political impotency of most of the Muslim world. Muslim social scientistsare beginning to examine those processes and factors that might create thekind of "New World Order" that liberates rather than oppresses Muslims.One a m of inquiry that must be addressed is that of political socialization,as it is a phenomenon that occm within virtually every human culture.In essence, it is a process that involves the individual's acquisition of sociallyand culturally approved attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors as regards thepolitical world. As a social science subspecialty, it represents a convergencebetween political science and child development. Much of the literature dealingwith political socialization therefore focuses on the institutions and mechanismsthrough which children are politically socialized over time.Within the Muslim world, the study of political socialization is critical toacquiring an understanding of how Muslim children learn about the multidimensionalnature of the political world. How do they learn about politics?What kinds of political socialization models might be developed to reflecttheir experience? What are the relative effects of institutions like the familyand school on their political socialization? These are just a few of the questionsthat must be addressed within an approach to political socialization thatreflects the cultural integrity of Muslims.This paper will explore the potential impact of secular education on thepolitical socialization of Muslim children. It will begin with a discussion ofa variety of political socialization models that have been developed in theWest. In higher education, across countries, a large share of students choose to study economics. Although there is only a small difference in the share of female and male students in that field, there is robust empirical evidence of a gender gap in economic competencies, showing that male students in most cases outperform female students. There is a broad discussion about the differences in gender-specific socializations that cause this gender gap. However, no research exists on the long-term effects of this gender gap. This study uses longitudinal and representative data of N = 1397 Swiss students (824 female students) to analyse the gender-specific effects of economic competencies at the end of the upper secondary level on their aspiration and decision to study economics. The results show that economic knowledge and interest in economics have a substantially stronger effect on the choice of economics for female students. The aspiration to study strongly mediates these effects. We argue that these results can mainly be traced back to different interests and self-perceptions of skills and abilities in economics caused by gender-specific socialization. Possible implications of gender socialization and discrimination in economics for secondary and higher education and for the labour market are discussed.

The Research Committee on Political Socialization and Education of the International Political Science Association celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019. The RC was recognized by IPSA in 1979 following a solid and successful pioneering phase in the 1960s and ‘70s. The RC flourished with a full board during 40 years, more than fifty RCPSE panels at IPSA World Congresses, more than thirty RCPSE conferences in thirteen countries, more than 60 RCPSE sponsored books, and its RCPSE journal during 27 years. Research highlights include four international comparative political socialization studies and several political socialization panel studies. For more than thirty different political orientations and behaviours it has been investigated whether political socialization contributes to the explanation of the variance therein. Research focused on eight political socialisation agents and about thirty specific political socializers in these domains. Forty years of research has yielded a lot of insights and an auspicious theory development. Some topics deserve much more attention than they have received so far while new political, economic and social developments require a retest of what was discovered about political socialization in the past and a study of the many new ways, forms and contents of political socialization at the present time and in the future.

статья посвящена анализу политической культуры личности, которая рассматривается как фактор политической социализации студенческой молодежи. Раскрыта специфика политической социализации студенческой молодежи в современных социально-экономических и социокультурных условиях. Сделан вывод о том, что политическая культура личности, с одной стороны, выступает как цель политической социализации студенческой молодежи, с другой – критерием успешности этого процесса. Политическая культура личности студента является многокомпонентным личностным образованием, включающим политические знания, эмоционально окрашенное отношение, ценности и нормы политической деятельности и политическое поведение. Педагогический подход к исследованию политической социализации студенческой молодежи позволяет выявить педагогические цели и условия формирования политической культуры студенческой молодежи. В качестве цели политической социализации выступает формирование политической культуры личности студентов. Педагогическими условиями успешной политической социализации студенческой молодежи являются вовлечение студентов в различные виды деятельности социально-политической направленности на основе аксиологического и системно-деятельностного подходов. the article is devoted to the analysis of the political culture of the individual, which is considered as a factor in the political socialization of student youth. The specifics of the political socialization of student youth in modern socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions are revealed. It is concluded that the political culture of an individual, on the one hand, acts as the goal of the political socialization of student youth, and on the other hand, as a criterion for the success of this process. The political culture of a student’s personality is a multicomponent personal formation, including political knowledge, emotionally charged attitudes, values and norms of political activity and political behavior. The pedagogical approach to the study of the political socialization of student youth allows us to identify the pedagogical goals and conditions for the formation of the political culture of student youth. The goal of political socialization is the formation of the political culture of students’ personalities. The pedagogical conditions for the successful political socialization of student youth are the involvement of students in various types of activities of a socio-political orientation based on the axiological and system-activity approaches.

The article delves into the challenges associated with the economic socialization of young students in contemporary Ukrainian society. It asserts that the shift towards a new paradigm of economic development, accompanied by profound changes in belief systems, orientations, and mentalities, necessitates early involvement of children in economic activities. Primary economic education is deemed a vital factor in economic socialization as it significantly influences a child's attitudes towards material and spiritual values, contributing to the overall formation of their personality. In the present stage of societal reforms and development, it is crucial to foster a level of economic knowledge that enables students to comprehend economic interrelationships not only in theory but also in practical applications. Recognizing the importance of cultivating an economic culture within individuals and society, the article emphasizes the need for humanization and humanitarianization of education to facilitate comprehensive personal development. A key aspect of this process is increasing the number of hours dedicated to teaching social subjects, including economics. The article underscores the significance of economic education amidst global socio-political and economic transformations and its relevance in enabling successful socialization of individuals within the new economic realities of Ukrainian society. As part of the broader socialization process and the formation of economic culture, researchers and practitioners emphasize the preparation of students for entrepreneurial activities. Three levels of preparation for entrepreneurial engagement are identified, encompassing worldview, advanced training in economic disciplines, and the development of personal entrepreneurial qualities, such as mobility and adaptability in dynamic market conditions. The article highlights the critical issue of preparing students for advanced professional education, which can be accomplished through specialized training programs such as "Small business accounting manager" and "Small business manager with the basics of information technologies" (two years of study). To facilitate effective learning, a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, discussions, and the simulation of diverse economic situations is recommended.

This paper investigates the origin of political trust in post-communist Central European and Soviet Union countries. By comparing two competing theories that explain political trust, institutionalism, and socialization theory, the paper tried to explore which theory shows a higher explanatory power in the transitional context. The research employs ordinary least squares (OLS) methodology, using country and time as dummies to control for unobserved heterogeneity. The main independent variable is constructed based on the ‘cohort effect,’ representing years of experience of communist rule. The study explores the role of socialization, institutionalism, and labor market experiences as determinants of political trust. Findings indicate that socialization under communism resisted democracy and market economy adoption, but economic and political situations played a more significant role in shaping political trust. Additionally, being employed in the state sector or self-employed during the transition period positively influenced political trust levels. This research sheds light on the intricate factors influencing political trust in the aftermath of significant institutional transformations in post-communist countries.

Il montre dans quelle mesure les étudiantes et étudiants en finance sont positionnés par leurs études et selon leurs origines sociales au sein de l’espace hiérarchisé des professions financières, mais également les façons dont ils intériorisent différemment des normes spécifiques, telle que la recherche systématique de profits, en fonction de leur socialisation antérieure. Il conclut que la socialisation professionnelle en finance favorise l’acceptation du fonctionnement économique capitaliste de la société
This thesis presents and analyzes the processes of professional socialization within finance education programs. It shows how finance students are positioned by their studies and according to their social backgrounds within the hierarchical space of financial professions, but also the ways in which they internalize specific norms differently, such as the systematic pursuit of profits, depending on their prior socialization. It concludes that professional socialization in finance promotes the acceptance of the capitalist economic structure of society

The present text is based on a key note lecture (‘Civic Education, Democracy and Political Participation’) delivered at the symposium Globalization of School Subjects – Challenges for Civics, History, Geography and Religious Education, Karlstad University, 13–14 December, 2012. Drawing on recent developments in research on political participation and civic engagement, the text starts out with a discussion about different ways of understanding political passivity. Subsequently, the text turns to a brief analysis of ways in which schools may provide young people with political skills and competencies needed in a democratic society. Three dimensions of political citizenship are highlighted: political efficacy, political literacy, and political participation; and the analysis focuses on the impact of a number of different school-related factors on these three ‘citizenship competencies’.

Thailand and Taiwan have indigenous minority populations which central authorities have sought to assimilate into the national mainstream. In both countries public education has served as an important tool of assimilation. This study examines the political ideology of the moral education curricula as applied to state primary schools serving indigenous populations in three localities in each country. The direct and indirect implementation of moral education was observed and interviews were carried out with teachers, students, parents and community leaders. The results show that as the indigenous minority children become more familiar with the national culture and its value system, they become more aware of ethnic discrimination against them, which in turn leads to a heightened sense of marginality and engenders antipathy toward members of the dominant ethnic group.

The purpose of this article is to examine the tendency to express and promote autonomy in the socialization of children in Estonia, a society with rapid ongoing social, political and economical changes. Autonomy has been regarded as being self-initiating in actions, feeling ownership of them, and expressing one’s opinion, preferences and feelings. This contribution reviews the findings from our previous research on childrearing practices and values in Estonia with focus on the promotion and support of children’s autonomy. Conclusions about the extent of autonomy promotion in the socialization of children across cultures will be discussed along with consideration of the possible reasons for cultural variability.

One of the urgent tasks of modern education is to create conditions for the socialization of the individual, social activity, and the formation of an attitude toward a certain level of relationships with others, which includes responsibility, independence, and activity. In addition, due to the constantly changing conditions of the economic and political development of society, which requires perseverance and determination of each person, it is the education system that will be able to create the basis for the formation of these important qualities. We conducted a study on our sample — a total of 197 students. The subject of our consideration is the development of assertive personality traits of students.

Research on language acquisition is a central theme in sociolinguistic research. Contemporary social, economic and political processes affect the life of communities and the languages what they speak. Globalization, migration and the enlargement of the European Union can significantly change the role and the future of majority and minority languages. In this research, we aim to reveal the family level language choice strategies of the Hungarian community in the small town of Margitha (Bihor County, Romania), discussing the role of family related social framework that positively or negatively influences the motivation of minority students to acquire knowledge of the Romanian language. For this purpose, we used both quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches. The results of research confirm that in multi-ethnic communities perhaps the most important, however at the same time the most vulnerable component of ethnic identity is the linguistic identity, which plays a key role in shaping the cultural landmarks and contents that determine the social integration of the individual. The positive family effects of socialization with the Hungarian language can be observed mostly in the ethnically homogeneous family. However, if one of the spouses is ethnic Romanian, the dominant language of communication within the family is more likely to be the Romanian language.

The aging society faced by many countries, can have a significant impact on employment, savings, consumption, economic growth, and fiscal balance. It is promising to consider the problems of an aging society through the prism of the effective economic socialization of the older generation, which allows ones to extend the working capacity, health and well-being of pensioners. Late economic socialization is understood as a process and result of a person's re-interpretation of the economic reality, acknowledged by changes in economic mind and behavior at the retirement as a new social status (Chestyunina & Zabelina, 2019). Factors that affect the effectiveness of the late economic socialization have not been sufficiently studied. This study seeks to fill this gap by the qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with pensioners living in different parts of the country (in the capital and in the industrial city). 12 respondents were interviewed in Moscow and 9 respondents in Chelyabinsk. Thematic analysis was used to systematize and analyze data. Despite the difference in living standards in the capital and the region, most pensioners in both groups are satisfied with their income level. An analysis of the distribution of daily financial spending and savings goals suggests that pensioners in the capital have a wider range of life needs and opportunities than in the region. Similarities in purchasing behavior among pensioners in the center of the country and on the periphery, as well as a relatively low level of consumer activity were found. A different attitude to loans was recorded among the respondents in different parts of the country. If in the region almost 100% of the respondents view loans sharply negatively, then in Moscow there are only half of such pensioners, the rest perceive the loan as normal fact and support it as an opportunity to purchase expensive goods. Plans for the future of Moscow pensioners are more diverse and include ambitious economic goals: to get an apartment in turn, to exchange an apartment, to close a mortgage. Only a small part of the respondents in Chelyabinsk (22%) set economic goals in the future, and they are associated with the continuation of employment. In addition, some of the opinions about the future in this group are very pessimistic. Pensioners in Moscow put money at a lower place in the value system than respondents in the region, which indicates a greater satisfaction with the material needs of pensioners in the capital. Representations about an ideal life in retirement are concentrated on issues of financial independence among Moscow respondents. For the pensioners in the region, besides wealth, health and a sense of stability play an important role. The criteria for an economically successful person are more blurred and uncertain in the group of the pensioners in the capital. The results indicate a regional specificity of the late economic socialization. The prospects for investigating the identified differences in the quantitative study are discussed.

"Reported is the synthesis of a series of seven studies on work and health, conducted collaboratively by researchers in applied psychology and occupational medicine. This qualitative meta-study develops a framework, in which reviewed studies are structured, aggregated, integrated, and interpreted in a theory-guided iterative process of themed analysis. Building on empirical results, the subsequent interpretive integration seeks to demonstrate, how overarching, pervasive, and in psychological research typically underemphasized tendencies of “subjectification” manifest in exemplary work contexts, research topics, and results. Subjectification of work is operationalized in dimensions of work intensification (performance focus), work internalization (goal adoption), and work individualization (job personalization). A meta-dimension is work insecurity (personal risk), cultivated in contemporary management ideologies of employee self-reliance. Following thematic description, content-analytical structuring criteria include: a) focus on work task (activity) versus working conditions (context); b) primary (close, direct, explicit) versus secondary (inferred, indirect, subtle) references to and/or indication for identified tendencies of subjectification; and c) theoretically assumed and empirically examined relationships with negative (psychopathological) and positive (psychosalutogenic) short, medium, and longer-term attitudinal and health-related work effects, as well as the personality-shaping impact of long-term occupational socialization. Psychological aspects of work tasks are core to 4 studies, 3 focus on working conditions and organizational practices. References to intensification were dominant in 4 studies, whereas 5 include internalization processes, and 3 predominantly focus on individualization of work. All studies share secondary or indirect references to other subjectifying tendencies. Examined work effects were aggregated into a matrix of short, medium and long-term positive and negative manifestations of health and wellbeing. Results suggest tensions and pressures arising from the motivational individualization of work tasks and conditions, resulting internalization of organizational interests and goals (e.g., performance, efficiency, costs), coupled with system-inherent tendencies of work intensification. These dysfunctional dynamics constitute risks factors for psychologically detrimental or harmful forms of self-management, self-control, and self-endangering work behavior, as manifestations of “internalized” incompatibilities between work and health in the neoliberal workplace, aggravated by existential threats associated with political-economic crisis. Outlined are implications of subjectification for a critical reevaluation and reorientation of basic theoretical assumptions of research and practice in applied psychology and occupational health."
