Анотація:
Целью статьи является разработка феноменологической математической модели формирования и роста фаз в части влияния температурной зависимости параметров диффузии на характер роста слоев в двухкомпонентной многофазной системе. Темой исследования является анализ влияния температурной зависимости параметров диффузии на изменение характера роста слоев в двухкомпонентных многофазных системах. Предложено решение задачи использования температурного режима процесса диффузии при разработке технологических процессов сварки, пайки, нанесении покрытий и других, при которых в диффузионной зоне образуются интерметаллические слои, карбиды, нитриды, субоксиды, фосфиды и т. п. с заданными и контролируемыми эксплуатационными характеристиками получаемых новых материалов, их соединений, покрытий и пр. Результаты решения задачи позволяют по известным параметрам температурного режима процесса диффузии, полученным при исследовании двухкомпонентной многофазной системы, целенаправленно контролировать динамику роста, состав образующихся в процессе диффузии слоев, и их выходные параметры в данной системе для получения новых материалов с заданными свойствами. Методами поляризационных и импедансных измерений изучено анодное поведение Mn5Si3-электрода в растворах (0.5–3.0) М NaОН в области от E коррозии до E выделения кислорода включительно. Сделан вывод, что поверхность силицида марганца в щелочном электролите обогащена металлическим компонентом сплава и продуктами его окисления. Установлены кинетические закономерности анодного поведения Mn5Si3, выяснены механизмы растворения и пассивации силицида, определены кинетические параметры реакции выделения кислорода. The theory of an induced energy polarized vacuum, as previously presented by the author (Penner. Can. J. Phys. 90, 315 (2012)), is used to generate a theoretical rotational curve for the Galaxy. The theoretical curve generated is found to be in good agreement with Sofue's (Publ. Astron. Soc. Jpn. 64, (In press) (2012)) compilation of observations. For the baryonic mass distribution and baryonic Tully–Fisher relationship that is used, the theoretical orbital velocity at the Sun's location is found to be (235 ± 15) km s−1. The galactic rotational velocity is then found to slowly fall from this value as it asymptotically approaches the value of (192 ± 15) km s−1.

This study investigated the effects of dystocia on milk production, somatic cell count, reproductivity, disease, and milk production. A total of 2159 cows across 21 dairy farms in Alberta, Canada were enrolled in this study. Multivariable models were created to explore associations between outcome variables and calving ease score. In total, 89.5% of calvings were unassisted, 6.1% were an easy pull, and 4.3% were a moderate–hard pull. Cows that had a moderate–hard pull produced 4.01 kg less milk, 0.12 kg less volume of milk fat, and 0.12 kg less milk protein per day than those that had an unassisted calving. No difference was found between calving ease groups with respect to SCC. Cows with a moderate or hard pull produced 510 kg less milk per lactation than unassisted cows. Cows with a moderate to high level of assistance at birth had a higher hazard of being culled over the duration of their lactation. Cows with an easy pull had increased odds of developing a retained placenta. It is evident that assistance at calving, particularly a moderate–hard pull, is associated with significant impacts on future milk production and risk of being culled; therefore, efforts should be made to minimize dystocia and prevent these impacts.

A three-dimensional predictive soil mapping approach for predicting soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks (t/ha) at high spatial resolution (30 m) for Alberta for 2020–2021 is described. A remote sensing data stack was first prepared covering Alberta’s agricultural lands. A total of 404 sampling locations were distributed across Alberta using 2-scale sampling: (1) 22 pilot farms representing main climatic zones and (2) conditioned Latin hypercube sampling at each farm. Soil samples were taken at four standard depths (0–15, 15–30, 30–60, 60–100 cm) using soil probes and analyzed for SOC. Predictive models for SOC content and bulk density were built separately and then used to predict at 0, 15, 30, 60, and 100 cm and calculate aggregated SOC stocks per pixel. The SOC content and bulk density models had R squares of 0.61 and 0.68, respectively. Based on these mapping results, grassland soils were consistently associated with higher SOC stocks across all soil types as compared to croplands. The average SOC stocks for grassland soils were 2.1 Mg per hectare, ranging from 2.17 to 6.09 Mg per hectare depending on soil type. Results also showed that >15 % of total SOC stocks were located in subsoil, which was higher than expected.

Amer. Math. Soc. 75 (1979), no. 1, 69-72]. An extension of (?) to the unit ball of Cn improves results of Beatrous an Burbea [Kodai Math. J. 8 (1985), 36-51], and of Stoll [J. London Math. Soc. (2) 48 (1993), no. 1, 126-136]. We also prove the analogous result for the harmonic Hardy spaces. The proofs of known results are shorter and more elementary then the existing ones, see Zhu [Spaces of holomorphic functions in the unit ball, Graduate Texts in Mathematics, vol. 226, Springer-Verlag, New York, 2005, Ch. IV]. We correct some constants in that book and in a paper of Jevtic and Pavlovic [Publ. Inst. Math. (Beograd) (N.S.) 64(78) (1998), 36-52].

This study examined the distinctiveness and causal relationships of Antonovsky's (1979) Sense of Coherence Scale and the Mental Health Index of Veit and Ware (1983) in a sample of 306 divorced Muslim Arab men and women in Israel. The findings, based on confirmatory factor analysis and latent‐variable structural modelling, suggest that in the present sample sense of coherence (SOC) and mental health are two independent but correlated constructs. They also suggest that, consistent with Antonovsky's theory, SOC may be better viewed as a mediator between stress and mental health than as a concurrent outcome of stress, although the latter possibility is not ruled out. Finally, the findings indicate that the SOC of the sample was relatively low in comparison with other groups. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Background Chronic cluster headache (CH) is a debilitating disorder for which few well-controlled studies demonstrate effectiveness of available therapies. Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) was examined as adjunctive prophylactic treatment of chronic CH. Methods PREVA was a prospective, open-label, randomised study that compared adjunctive prophylactic nVNS ( n = 48) with standard of care (SoC) alone (control ( n = 49)). A two-week baseline phase was followed by a four-week randomised phase (SoC plus nVNS vs control) and a four-week extension phase (SoC plus nVNS). The primary end point was the reduction in the mean number of CH attacks per week. Response rate, abortive medication use and safety/tolerability were also assessed. Results During the randomised phase, individuals in the intent-to-treat population treated with SoC plus nVNS ( n = 45) had a significantly greater reduction in the number of attacks per week vs controls ( n = 48) (−5.9 vs −2.1, respectively) for a mean therapeutic gain of 3.9 fewer attacks per week (95% CI: 0.5, 7.2; p = 0.02). Higher ≥50% response rates were also observed with SoC plus nVNS (40% (18/45)) vs controls (8.3% (4/48); p < 0.001). No serious treatment-related adverse events occurred. Conclusion Adjunctive prophylactic nVNS is a well-tolerated novel treatment for chronic CH, offering clinical benefits beyond those with SoC.

Abstract Introduction Introduction: Small burns with a total body surface area (TBSA) of &lt; 20% account for the large majority (92%) of burn injury hospital admissions. Autologous skin cell suspension (ASCS) is a novel treatment for acute thermal burn injuries – including small burns -- that is associated with significantly lower donor skin requirements than split-thickness skin grafts, the traditional standard of care (SOC). The ASCS treatment indication was recently expanded from adult patients to include pediatric patients. Previously modeled analyses suggested that ASCS use is associated with a lower hospital length of stay (LOS) and costs savings versus SOC. This study evaluated whether real-world data (RWD) corroborate these findings in small burns and in both adult and pediatric populations. Methods Methods: Data were collected from January 2019 through August 2020 from 500 facilities in the United States. Adult patients (age ≥ 21) and pediatric patients (&lt; age 21) receiving inpatient burn treatment with ASCS were identified and matched to patients receiving SOC based on sex, age, TBSA &lt; 20%, and comorbidities. Based on typical BEACON model outcomes, LOS was assumed to account for 70% of total costs and was used as a proxy to assess the data. LOS was assumed to cost $7,554 per day. Mean LOS and costs were calculated for the ASCS and SOC adult and pediatric cohorts. The incremental revenue associated with changes in inpatient capacity was also analyzed. Results Results: A total of 151 ASCS and 2,243 SOC adult cases and 19 ASCS and 341 SOC pediatric cases were identified. In adults, the SOC cohort had a higher percentage of patients with TBSA &lt; 20% than the ASCS cohort (82.9% vs. 55.0%). For small burns, sixty-three matches were made for each adult cohort, and seven matches were made for each pediatric cohort. For adults, LOS was 18.5 days with ASCS use and 20.6 days with SOC use (difference: 2.1 days [10.2%]). For pediatrics, the ASCS LOS was 18.6 days, and the SOC LOS was 21.4 days (difference: 2.9 days [15.4%]). This difference led to cost savings of $15,587.62 per adult ASCS patient. Total cost savings with ASCS adult patients were $22,268.03 per patient. The reduced LOS with ASCS adult patients resulted in an increased capacity of 2.0 inpatients per bed per year, which was estimated to increase hospital revenue by $83,894 per burn unit bed annually. Pediatric cost results and savings were similar. Conclusions Conclusion: This RWD analysis shows that small burn treatment with ASCS is associated with reduced LOS and substantial cost savings compared with SOC in both adult and pediatric populations, supporting the validity of previous model projections. ASCS use may also significantly increase hospital revenue related to increased inpatient capacity.

In questa tesi si descrive il lavoro svolto presso l’istituto INFN-CNAF, che consiste nello sviluppo di un’applicazione parallela e del suo utilizzo su di un’architettura a basso consumo, allo scopo di valutare il comportamento della stessa, confrontandolo a quello di architetture ad alta potenza di calcolo. L’architettura a basso consumo utilizzata `e un system on chip mutuato dal mondo mobile e embedded contenente una cpu ARM quad core e una GPU NVIDIA, mentre l’architettura ad alta potenza di calcolo `e un sistema x86 64 con una GPU NVIDIA di classe server. L’applicazione `e stata sviluppata in C++ in due differenti versioni: la prima utilizzando l’estensione OpenMP e la seconda utilizzando l’estensione CUDA. Queste due versioni hanno permesso di valutare il comportamento dell’architettura a basso consumo sotto diversi punti di vista, utilizzando nelle differenti versioni dell’applicazione la CPU o la GPU come unita` principale di elaborazione.

Lo scopo principale della tesi è stato quello di verificare se l’Agricoltura Conservativa è in grado di aumentare nel tempo le quantità di Carbonio Organico del Suolo (SOC) in modo più efficiente rispetto alle comuni pratiche di Agricoltura Convenzionale. Utilizzando i dati del progetto Europeo LifeHelpSoil, sono state effettuate delle simulazioni predittive delle dinamiche del carbonio in diversi tipi di suoli presenti nelle 4 aziende di progetto tramite RothC un modello molto utilizzato in ambito scientifico a livello internazionale. La prima parte del lavoro ha riguardato il reperimento di tutti i dati di input per il modello ovvero: A) dati climatici storici e proiezioni future di valori medi mensili relativi ai siti aziendali provenienti da ARPAE e JRC; B) dati relativi al tipo di suolo (% Argilla e Stock di Carbonio Organico); C) dati riguardanti gli ordinamenti colturali e le pratiche agricole nelle tre annualità del progetto Life (2014-2016): tipo di coltura; irrigazione; lavorazioni del terreno; cover-crops; concimazioni; inoltre a partire dai quantitativi in peso del prodotto raccolto sono stati calcolati prima i diversi residui colturali e poi i relativi apporti in termini di carbonio organico al suolo. La seconda parte si è sviluppata con le simulazioni utilizzando diversi archi temporali. Il modello richiede una prima fase di parametrizzazione utilizzando dati climatici del passato e dati di input di materiale organico tali da portare la simulazione all’equilibrio ossia ottenere valori di SOC simulati pari al valore di carbonio misurato in campo; segue poi la fase di simulazione futura utilizzando gli schemi di gestione agronomica del suolo adottati nel progetto Life e i dati climatici di climate change. I risultati ottenuti hanno confermato l’ipotesi che l’Agricoltura Conservativa aumenti il contenuto di Carbonio organico nel terreno (quindi di Sostanza Organica) il quale è un parametro importante in quanto principale indicatore di qualità del suolo.

Questo lavoro di tesi, svolto presso il CNAF (Centro Nazionale per lo sviluppo delle Tecnologie Informatiche e Telematiche) è inserito nell'ambito del progetto INFN COSA (Computing on SoC Architecture). Si pone come obbiettivo quello di testare i consumi e le prestazioni di sistemi computazionali a basso consumo energetico di tipo System on Chip (SoC), i quali stanno emergendo come unità di calcolo su cui eseguire e testare applicazioni scientifiche. A tal proposito si è realizzato un misuratore di corrente basato su Arduino UNO e un trasduttore corrente-tensione, la cui uscita analogica dipende linearmente dal valore della corrente in ingresso fornitagli dall'alimentazione del SoC di cui si vuole testarne il consumo. L'Arduino converte la tensione analogica in uscita dal trasduttore, tramite l'ADC a 10 bit incorporato, in valori di tensione digitali con un'incertezza di 5 mV e una durata temporale di 1 ms. Le misure sono state effettuate tramite una retta di calibrazione corrente-tensione ottenuta nel lavoro di tesi, la quale ha consentito di convertire le letture di tensione salvate nella memoria dell'Arduino, espresse come livello dell'ADC, in letture di corrente. In questo elaborato, si espongono alcune ragioni per cui oggigiorno la comunità scientifica è sempre più interessata a scegliere come unità di calcolo architeturre basate su SoC, piuttosto che architetture tradizionali. La tesi illustra tutti gli step che hanno consentito di ottenere la retta di calibrazione tramite la quale sono state effettuate delle misure, per alcune applicazioni fornite dal CNAF, su una scheda low power modello NVIDA Jetson che monta un SoC Tegra K1. Successivamente sono stati confrontati i risultati del misuratore di corrente realizzato con quelli misurati tramite un multimetro digitale ad alta precisione in dotazione al CNAF.

In questa tesi,svolta presso il CNAF,si presentano i risultati ottenuti nel lavoro svolto per la parallelizzazione in CUDA dell'algoritmo di ricostruzione tomografica di Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK),sulla base del software in versione sia sequenziale che parallela MPI,sviluppato presso i laboratori del X-ray Imaging Group.Gli obbiettivi di questo lavoro sono principalmente due:ridurre in modo sensibile i tempi di esecuzione dell'algoritmo di ricostruzione FDK parallelizzando su Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) e valutare,su diverse tipologie di architetture,i consumi energetici.Le piattaforme prese in esame sono:SoC (System-on-Chip) low-power, architetture a basso consumo energetico ma a limitata potenza di calcolo,e High Performance Computing (HPC),caratterizzate da un'elevata potenza di calcolo ma con un ingente consumo energetico.Si vuole mettere in risalto la differenza di prestazioni in relazione al tipo di architettura e rispetto al relativo consumo energetico.Poter sostituire nodi HPC con schede SoC low-power presenta il vantaggio di ridurre i consumi, la complessità dell'hardware e la possibilità di ottenere dei risultati direttamente in loco.I risultati ottenuti mostrano che la parallelizzazione di FDK su GPU sia la scelta più efficiente. Risulta infatti sempre,e su ogni architettura testata,più performante rispetto alla versione MPI,nonostante in quest'ultima venga parallelizzato tutto l'algoritmo.In CUDA invece si parallelizza solo la fase di ricostruzione.Inoltre si è risusciti a raggiungere un'efficienza di utilizzo della GPU del 100%.L'efficienza energetica rapportata alle prestazioni in termini di tempo è migliore per le architetture SoC rispetto a quelle HPC.Si propone infine un approccio ibrido MPI unito a CUDA che migliora ulteriormente le prestazioni di esecuzione.Il filtraggio e la ricostruzione sono operazioni indipendenti,si utilizza allora l'implementazione più efficiente per la data operazione,filtrare in MPI e ricostruire in CUDA.

Il trasporto ferroviario evolve verso scenari caratterizzati da convogli che viaggiano sempre più ravvicinati e a velocità crescente, il che richiede standard di sicurezza sempre più elevati. Rendere più sicuri treni che viaggiano a distanze ridotte significa poterli localizzare con precisione, cosa che oggi viene fatta anche con soluzioni che si basano sul principio della odometria. Con lo sguardo rivolto al futuro, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana e Arces stanno sviluppando un nuovo sistema di localizzazione odometrica. Questa tesi ha l’obiettivo di studiare una soluzione che assicuri al percorso dei dati del sottosistema di odometria, dal sensore all’elaborazione digitale, una Probability of Failure per Hour non inferiore a 10^-9. Per realizzarlo è stato necessario assicurare l’integrità di una sezione analogica rispetto ai guasti di tipo stuck-at. Sono state quindi studiate le dinamiche di guasto, calcolato il MTBF e infine sono stati pensati stimoli di test in ingresso con controllo delle uscite, pilotati da una sezione digitale. La difficoltà principale è stata rendere trasparenti gli stimoli di test alla logica di elaborazione odometrica, in modo da non compromettere i segnali vitali. Inoltre è stato necessario controllare l’assenza di anomalie nel sensore e nel cavo di trasmissione che lo collega alla sezione analogica, attraverso la misura di corrente assorbita dall’alimentazione. Per farlo è stato progettato un circuito per le misure di corrente ed è stata programmata la sezione digitale per digitalizzare e verificare le misure. Infine è stata redatta la documentazione formale con la descrizione delle scelte progettuali e dei collaudi effettuati in laboratorio, al fine di ottenere la certificazione di sicurezza SIL4, la più alta possibile, come previsto da RFI. L’architettura della sezione digitale in cui si è lavorato era mista, comprendente FPGA e MCU. L’innovazione del progetto risiede nel far eseguire quante più operazioni possibile alla logica programmabile.

Ce travail de thèse présente une étude concernant la caractérisation des effets électrothermiques dans les transistors bipolaires à hétérojonction (HBT) en SiGe. Lors de ces travaux, deux procédés technologiques BiCMOS à l’état de l’art ont été analysés: le B11HFC de Infineon Technologies (130nm) et le B55 de STMicroelectronics (55nm).Des structures de test dédiées ont étés conçues, pour évaluer l’impact électrothermique du back end of line (BEOL) de composants ayant une architecture à un ou plusieurs doigts d’émetteur. Une caractérisation complète a été effectuée en régime continu et en mode alternatif en petit et en grand signal. De plus, une extraction des paramètres thermiques statiques et dynamiques a été réalisée et présentée pour les structures de test proposées. Il est démontré que les figures de mérite DC et RF s’améliorent sensiblement en positionnant des couches de métal sur le transistor, dessinées de manière innovante et ayant pour fonction de guider le flux thermique vers l’extérieur. L’impact thermique du BEOL a été modélisé et vérifié expérimentalement dans le domaine temporel et fréquentiel et aussi grâce à des simulations 3D par éléments finis. Il est à noter que l’effet du profil de dopage sur la conductivité thermique est analysé et pris en compte.Des topologies de transistor innovantes ont étés conçues, permettant une amélioration des spécifications de l’aire de sécurité de fonctionnement, grâce à un dessin innovant de la surface d’émetteur et du deep trench (DTI).Un modèle compact est proposé pour simuler les effets de couplage thermique en dynamique entre les émetteurs des HBT multi-doigts; ensuite le modèle est validé avec de mesures dédiées et des simulations TCAD.Des circuits de test ont étés conçus et mesurés, pour vérifier la précision des modèles compacts utilisés dans les simulateurs de circuits; de plus, l’impact du couplage thermique entre les transistors sur les performances des circuits a été évalué et modélisé. Finalement, l’impact du dissipateur thermique positionné sur le transistor a été étudié au niveau circuit, montrant un réel intérêt de cette approche
This work is focused on the characterization of electro-thermal effects in advanced SiGe hetero-junction bipolar transistors (HBTs); two state of the art BiCMOS processes have been analyzed: the B11HFC from Infineon Technologies (130nm) and the B55 from STMicroelectronics (55nm).Special test structures have been designed, in order to evaluate the overall electro-thermal impact of the back end of line (BEOL) in single finger and multi-finger components. A complete DC and RF electrical characterization at small and large signal, as well as the extraction of the device static and dynamic thermal parameters are performed on the proposed test structures, showing a sensible improvement of the DC and RF figures of merit when metal dummies are added upon the transistor. The thermal impact of the BEOL has been modeled and experimentally verified in the time and frequency domain and by means of 3D TCAD simulations, in which the effect of the doping profile on the thermal conductivity is analyzed and taken into account.Innovative multi-finger transistor topologies are designed, which allow an improvement of the SOA specifications, thanks to a careful design of the drawn emitter area and of the deep trench isolation (DTI) enclosed area.A compact thermal model is proposed for taking into account the mutual thermal coupling between the emitter stripes of multi-finger HBTs in dynamic operation and is validated upon dedicated pulsed measurements and TCAD simulations.Specially designed circuit blocks have been realized and measured, in order to verify the accuracy of device compact models in electrical circuit simulators; moreover the impact on the circuit performances of mutual thermal coupling among neighboring transistors and the presence of BEOL metal dummies is evaluated and modeled

Mobile GPU computing, or System on Chip with embedded GPU (SoC GPU), becomes in great demand recently. Since these SoCs are designed for mobile devices with real-time applications such as image processing and video processing, high-efficient implementations of wavelet transform are essential for these chips. In this paper, the author develops two SoC GPU based DWT: signal based parallelization for discrete wavelet transform (sDWT) and coefficient based parallelization for discrete wavelet transform (cDWT), and the author evaluates the performance of three-dimensional wavelet transform on SoC GPU Tegra K1. Computational results show that, SoC GPU based DWT is significantly faster than SoC CPU based DWT. Computational results also show that, sDWT can generally satisfy the requirement of real-time processing (30 frames per second) with the image sizes of 352×288, 480×320, 720×480 and 1280×720, while cDWT can only obtain read-time processing with small image sizes of 352×288 and 480×320.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a major indicator of soil health. Globally, soil contains approximately 2344 Gt of organic carbon (OC), which is the largest terrestrial pool of OC. Through plant growth, soil health is connected with the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. Provides ecosystem services which include climate regulation, water supplies and regulation, nutrient cycling, erosion protection and enhancement of biodiversity. Global increase in land use change from natural vegetation to agricultural land has been documented as a result of intensification of agricultural practices in response to an increasing human population. Consequently, these changes have resulted in depletion of SOC stock, thereby negatively affecting agricultural productivity and provision of ecosystem services. This necessitates the need to consider technological options that promote retention of SOC stocks. Options to enhance SOC include; no-tillage/conservation agriculture, irrigation, increasing below-ground inputs, organic amendments, and integrated, and diverse cropping/farming systems. In addition, land use conversion from cropland to its natural vegetation improves soil C stocks, highlighting the importance of increasing agricultural production per unit land instead of expanding agricultural land to natural areas.

In the warm and humid tropics and subtropics, conservation agriculture, based on no-tillage and cropping systems with high biomass production, creates a positive balance between the output and input of carbon (C), which increases soil organic C (SOC) stocks by 0.3–0.6 Megagrams per hectare per year (Mg ha-1 yr-1 )in the top 30 cm and in some cases >1.0 Mg ha-1 in the top 1 m of soil. The occlusion of organic matter (OM) inside stable aggregates, facilitated by no-tillage and organo-mineral interactions, are important factors in SOC accumulation, in addition to the high biomass input by crops, such as maize, and by cover crops, including legumes. Lower nitrous oxide emission and higher methane consumption in no-tillage soils reduce the yield-scaled greenhouse gas (GHG) emission compared with conventionally tilled soils. There is potential to foster C sequestration in tropical and subtropical soils, but only when suitable soil and OM management is utilised.

The chapter aims to evaluate the profit loss of rice farmers due to salinity intrusion by collecting the information of rice production in three regions with the same natural environment conditions, social characteristics (e.g., the same social and farming culture, ethnicity, type of soil), and only differed with respect to the level of salinity in Soc Trang province, one of the most salinity-affected areas in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The study estimated the profit loss in rice production due to saltwater intrusion by the difference in rice profit between the non-salinity and salinity regions and showed this loss was about VND 9.3-15.1 million per ha-1 a year.

Utilizing electric vehicles (EVs) that don't pollute the atmosphere is one way to solve environmental pollution. This chapter as per the author proposes Harris Hawk optimized algorithm (HHOA) based on fuzzy logic controller with battery management system in electric vehicles. The suggested system is made to alter and regulate the current values of battery characteristics like battery voltage, current, power usage, and state of charge (SOC). To estimate the model temperature dependency, at various temperatures, the heat parameters can be found. Then, these temperature-dependent parameters are extracted for model decoupling. With offline data, the provided model is verified to attain good reliability over a wide range of temperatures and charge states. Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to monitor and control BMS operation.

A single-enzyme cascade for the reductive transam­ination of acetophenone 4 with amine 5 to produce enantiopure sec-phenethylamine 6 was developed (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 161) by Per Berglund at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. A group at Boehringer Ingelheim in Ridgefield, Connecticut, led by Jonathan T. Reeves, disclosed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 5565) a procedure for the addition of DMF anion to N-sulfinyl imine 7 to furnish tert-leucine amide 8 with high diastereoselectivity. The tertiary carbinamine 10 was synthesized (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 34) via the carbolithiation/rearrangement of vinyl­urea 9 as reported by Jonathan Clayden at the University of Manchester. Gregory C. Fu at Caltech reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 2525) that the chiral phosphine 12 catalyzed the enantioselective addition of trifluoroacetamide to allene 11 to produce γ-amino ester 13 in enantioenriched form. Adeline Vallribera at the Autonomous University of Barcelona found (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 1448) that a euro­pium pybox complex effected the highly enantioselective α-amination of β-ketoester 14 to generate 15 on the way to the Parkinson’s disease co-drug L-carbidopa. Hisashi Yamamoto at the University of Chicago and Chubu University reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 3411) that a halfnium(IV) complex of the bishydroxamic acid 17 catalyzed the enantioselective epoxidation of the tertiary homoallylic alcohol 16 to 18. The rearrangement of the allylic carbonate 19 to produce allyl ether 21 with high ee under iridium catalysis in the presence of ligand 20 was disclosed (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 512) by Hyunsoo Han at the University of Texas, San Antonio. The asymmetric vinylogous aldol reaction of 3-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1-one 22 and α-keto ester 23 to furnish tertiary carbinol 25 using the bifunctional catalyst 24 was developed (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 220) by Paolo Melchiorre at ICREA and ICIQ in Spain.

The state of charge (SOC) of Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) plays an important role in the operation and control of the Battery system. The value of SOC can be defined as the ratio of the remaining capacity to the rated capacity of the battery. Current measurement of SOC of VRFB is limited to one certain charge-discharge circulation so the rated capacity is known and can be regarded as a constant. However, during long time cycling, the capacity of VRFB will reduce gradually to a relatively low level so that the capacity of the battery cannot be seen as the constant value of rated capacity, which makes it difficult to measure the SOC accurately in real-time operation. This work presents a neural network based method of measuring the capacity and SOC for VRFB in real time. The capacity is firstly classified into three levels in terms of the loss degree by a Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) using the values of the voltage per second and the average power of the cell stack in any period of the circulation. The values of capacity which fall within different levels are then given by different Back Propagation Neural Networks (BPNN) trained by the battery operation values in corresponding level. Finally, the SOC can be obtained by the calculated capacity. All the networks are validated by experimental data and the results indicate that the method is suitable for the measurement of VRFB capacity and SOC in the practical application.

Pinhole leaks have been reported as a significant cause of oil and gas pipeline failures in recent years. From 2010 to 2015, at least 131 significant incidents involving oil and gas pipelines in the United States (101 and 30, respectively) were attributed to pinhole leaks. The 9th European Gas Pipeline Incident Data Group Report states that as of 2013, the five-year moving average failure frequency for pinholes was equal to an approximate annual rate of 0.105 failures per 1,000 kilometers of pipeline(1). Pinholes may result from normal pipeline corrosion during routine operations, such as microbiologically induced corrosion, or can be created by third-party activities, such as illegal tapping. These small leaks have become a major risk for many pipeline companies. Pinhole leaks are more likely to lead to serious consequences than larger leaks because they are difficult to discover through normal monitoring and patrolling. An undetected pinhole leak can lead to significant soil and groundwater pollution over time. The research objective of this project was to investigate the applicability of magnetic flux leakage (MFL) to the inspection of oil and gas pipelines for pinhole defects. The MFL signal may be affected by pinhole diameter, depth, position, and so on. MFL inline inspection (ILI) technologies from five vendors were tested in blind scenarios involving pipeline with manufactured defects. Multiple pull through tests, field dig verification, and sampling were conducted to assess the effectiveness of MFL-ILI in pinhole detection. An optimal practice was developed by comparing the gap between MFL tracks, sampling frequency, intensity of magnetic field, etc. This report also outlines tests conducted to investigate the feasibility of using hydrostatic testing to detect pinholes.
