Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine, for a sample of ten corporations in three industries (i.e. automotive suppliers, semiconductors, and computer networks), the different strategies that firms undertake when acquiring patent-protected technologies. In particular, the authors analyze and compare two alternative channels for patent acquisition: markets for technology (MFT) and merger and acquisition (M&A) processes. Design/methodology/approach The authors implement two types of analyses, at both patent and firm level. First, the authors perform an econometric analysis to evaluate whether acquired patented technologies differ in their patent bibliographic characteristics with respect to patent-protected technologies that have been developed internally by the examined firms. The authors then investigate the presence of differences in the characteristics of transacted patents acquired in the MFT or by means of M&A activities. Second, the authors take a firm-level perspective and examine the technology acquisition strategies adopted by selected companies to identify the presence of common patterns, industry-driven specificities and firm peculiarities. Findings The authors find that acquired patented technologies are, on average, more complex, of higher technical merit and the corresponding patents show a higher legal robustness. Econometric results reveal the presence of differences between M&A and MFT patents: the latter seem to protect less complex, and thus easier to trade, inventions. The analysis of the patterns of patent acquisitions at the firm level shows the presence of different strategies for the external sourcing of patented technologies, based on whether acquired patents protect core or non-core technology areas of the analyzed firms. Such patterns are discussed in the light of the different streams of the literature on intellectual property (IP) management. Originality/value This paper makes use of a new and comprehensive data set of the US patent transactions that took place between 2002 and 2010. The authors added detailed data on the evolution of the corporate trees of analyzed firms. The paper contributes to the literature on technology acquisitions and MFT by examining the different channels for patented technology acquisitions. The issue represents an emerging area of interest in the field of IP management.

Acquisitions are widely argued to be an increasingly common solution for technology needs. This paper uses the information and telecommunications industry as background for assessing how technical knowledge and absorptive capacity, the rate of invention and prior acquisition experience affect the likelihood of acquisition. The results indicate that in this standards-based industry, even firms with relevant patent portfolios and R&D expenditures are as likely as less knowledgeable firms to acquire rather than enter the market with internally developed products. The strong predictors of acquisition are experience in acquisitions and the ability to pay. Thus, while the number of acquisitions has increased dramatically, the use of this approach is limited to a small group of firms and is not a widespread solution.

PurposeWe address the following research questions: (1) Is the innovation trajectory of the acquirer affected by previous acquisitions? (2) In which direction knowledge recombination from the acquisition is pushed further? (3) Is the technological acquisition more a means for knowledge exploration and radical innovation or, on the contrary, a way for consolidating previous technological specialization?Design/methodology/approachThe nature of this study is exploratory; therefore, we opted for an inductive approach based on the L'Oréal case study analysis. Data were triangulated from different sources: (a) the L'Oréal website and press releases collected in the 2009–2015 period; (b) journal articles and books on the global cosmetics industry and the insightful work of Jones (2010); (c) the Questel Orbit database containing data on patents; and (d) the Zephyr – Bureau van Dijk database containing information on the acquisitions of firms.FindingsEmpirical evidence from a patent data analysis reveals a paradoxical path. On the one hand, acquisitions enable the company to explore new technological spaces; on the other hand, they allow it to reinforce a preexisting technological trajectory, even when the knowledge base of the target is distant from that of the acquirer. Thus, in our case study, the absorption and recombination of knowledge from a variety of domains support specialization more than diversification technology strategies.Originality/valueWe add to innovation management literature a new perspective, by offering a detailed analysis, through patent data, of the knowledge recombination process, led by technological acquisitions.

Recent years have seen increasing initiatives involving more applications of real options to value the strategizing process. These initiatives, referred to as Real Option Theory (ROT), imply greater inclusiveness of simple and advanced real options in strategizing processes. While substantial theoretical groundwork on ROT has been laid in corporate finance, and both qualitative and quantitative studies on ROT in business management journals are appearing on an increasing basis, there remain significant opportunities for more research on strategic synergism in patent-based acquisitions. In this vein, the current paper aims to explore a rainbow real options application (real options that are exposed to two sources of uncertainty) to measure patent-based collaborative synergies in high-tech mergers and acquisitions. Having conducted the deviant case study of ZOOX start-up’s acquisition by Amazon.com in 2020, this paper justifies the proposition of the employability of rainbow real options for the valuation of network and relational synergies in highly risky patent-based acquisitions with multiple uncertainties.

Patent data contain plenty of valuable information. Recently, the lack of innovative ideas has resulted in some enterprises encountering bottlenecks in product research and development (R&D). Some enterprises point out that they do not have enough comprehension of product components. To improve efficiency of product R&D, this paper introduces natural-language processing (NLP) technology, which includes part-of-speech (POS) tagging and subject–action–object (SAO) classification. Our strategy first extracts patent keywords from products, then applies a complex network to obtain core components based on structural holes and centrality of eigenvector algorism. Finally, we use the example of US shower patents to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the methodology. As a result, this paper examines the acquisition of core components and how they can help enterprises and designers clarify their R&D ideas and design priorities.

A significant area of research is the effective acquisition of knowledge via patent analysis, especially in the fast-developing sector of electric cars. As they can quickly and effectively assess massive volumes of patent data, machine learning approaches can be very useful because they can recognize patterns and developments that are challenging to spot manually. This article provides a unique elephant herding optimized kernel-adaptive support vector machine (EHO-KSVM) method for effective knowledge acquisition utilizing machine learning (ML) on electric car patent data. To evaluate the efficacy of the suggested EHO-KSVM approach, data from the G06F patents were first gathered. In this work, the raw data is first pre-processed using NLP methods, and then the important data is extracted from patent databases using principal component analysis (PCA). Then, we analyze the data using the EHO-KSVM approach to spot patterns and trends that can be utilized to forecast technological developments and offer perceptions into new markets. The outcomes show that the suggested strategy can greatly reduce the time and effort needed to acquire knowledge and provide insightful information for decision-makers in electric car technology.

Nowadays, many firms are or have already been engaged in an acquisition process, either as target or acquirer. While these companies seem confident in the potential returns of such endeavors, the positive aspect of those acquisitions has yet to be proven. There is indeed a vivid discussion among scholars, which are divided into two categories. On the one hand, there are those considering acquisitions as a source of additional knowledge that will in turn increase the innovation within the company; and on the other hand, those denigrating acquisitions, assimilating them to a “poison pill” for innovation. The purpose of this research is therefore to investigate whether the acquisitions will influence positively or negatively the innovative performance of companies involved in such processes. Using a quantitative approach, this research analyzed the R&D investments made by those companies and the issued patents gained in return. The research provides mixed results. While acquisitions seem to have a positive impact on the companies‟ innovative performance during the two years following the acquisition, this positive impact does not last and even becomes negative during the third year.

Germany’s economic dominance in Europe, generous investment incentives, and technical manufacturing prowess has encouraged an influx of Chinese-led inbound activity, concentrated in high-tech sector mergers and acquisitions. A close examination of these M&As yields evidence of systemic Chinese state-financing through both state-owned and private vehicles that likely stems from China’s “Made in China 2025” policy, which hopes to stem capital outflow and to indigenize technological innovation. As Germany braces for what it sees to be continuous attempts by China to take patented German technology through M&As, it worries that Chinese patent law will allow for rampant patent infringement by copycat Chinese entities. This paper presents an overview of the root causes of China’s heavy economic activity in Germany, as well as an analysis of the legal concerns held by German firms based on a close reading of the Patent Law of the People’s Republic of China and strategic recommendations for German companies hoping to work with or in China.

Un brevet accorde à son propriétaire un droit exclusif temporaire sur des inventions qui sont nouvelles, qui impliquent une étape inventive et qui sont susceptibles d'une application industrielle. En s'appuyant sur ce droit, les inventeurs peuvent protéger leurs idées contre l'imitation et obtenir un retour économique sur leurs investissements en recherche et développement (R&D). Cependant, l'utilisation des brevets a connu une transformation significative, s'étendant bien au-delà de l'objectif traditionnel de récompenser les efforts innovants. Particulièrement dans le domaine des technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC), les brevets sont de plus en plus utilisés comme des outils stratégiques (Blind, 2021). Patents are a form of intellectual property rights (IPRs) that are especially relevant to promoting innovative activities. A patent grants its owner a temporary exclusive right over inventions that are new, involve an inventive step and are susceptible of industrial application. Relying on this right, inventors can protect their ideas from imitation and gain an economic return from their investments in research and development (R&D). However, the use of patents has undergone a significant transformation, extending far beyond the traditional purpose of rewarding innovative efforts. Particularly in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), patents are increasingly used as strategic tools (Blind, 2021). Moreover, over the past three decades, the sharp increase in the number of granted patents and the unprecedented flourishing of patent trading have paved the way for new intermediaries in the market for technology (Hagiu and Yoffie, 2013). Non-practicing entities (NPEs)—firms that do not use their patents in a traditional manufacturing sense, but primarily engage in licensing and enforcement—have emerged as prominent actors on the patent market (Golden, 2007; Feldman and Ewing, 2012). Also referred to as Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs), sometimes pejoratively called "patent trolls," NPEs have greatly polarized the academic and policy debate. Due to their non-manufacturing status, NPEs have unique advantages over operating companies. They are typically shielded from patent infringement counter-claims and have recently faced allegations of employing patent "hold-up" strategies (Lemley and Shapiro, 2007), which some argue it imposes a significant "tax on innovation" with potential negative effects on subsequent innovation (Chien, 2008). While NPEs have been extensively analyzed in the US patent market since their emergence in the early 2000s (Mezzanotti, 2021; Lemley and Zyontz, 2021), it is only recently that researchers have started to investigate their presence in the European technology market (Fusco, 2013; Love, 2013; Leiponen and Delcamp, 2019). This thesis aims to address these research gaps by examining the NPE phenomenon in the European patent marketplace. First, we extensively explore and analyze the literature on NPE business models by adopting a novel bibliometric approach guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol for systematic literature reviews. In addition, we will integrate three relevant NPE business models case studies. Second, we empirically investigate the presence of NPEs in the European patent market through a brand- new dataset of NPE patent filings and acquisitions at the European Patent Office (EPO). Furthermore, we develop an original taxonomy, thus categorizing NPEs into three business models: "Litigation," "Portfolio" and "Technology" NPEs. Finally, we empirically explore the interplay between the quality characteristics of the asserted patent and the propensity of NPEs to choose specific European jurisdictions where to initiate litigation (forum shopping)

Le droit de brevet, sacralisé par sa qualification de droit de propriété, et renforcé par les dispositions des accords internationaux et des lois nationales, est facilement susceptible d'acquisition et d'exercice abusive. En outre, la défaillance de certains offices des brevets amplifie les possibilités de l'appropriation abusive. Les situations de l'acquisition abusive du droit de brevet sont plus fréquentes dans le secteur des hautes technologies (l'industrie pharmaceutique, la biotechnologie et l'industrie de l'informatique). Ces abus, d'une part, entravent la réalisation de la fonction assignée au droit de brevet et, d'autre part, restreignent la liberté de la concurrence. Les dispositions du droit des brevets et celles du droit de la concurrence imposent des limites au pouvoir des brevetés, pouvoir issu de leur droit privatif, afin de réaliser l'intérêt général. Cependant, ces deux corps de règles ne viennent pas au secours des particuliers dont les intérêts privés peuvent être atteints par l'usage abusif du droit de brevet. La théorie de l'abus de droit, principe général du droit commun, comble cette lacune. Malgré son application limitée et prudente en matière du droit de brevet, son utilité n'est pas à négliger. Elle permet de prévenir et de sanctionner l'usage anormal du droit de brevet. La comparaison entre le droit français et égyptien montre que la différence du niveau de développement économique et industriel entre les pays influe sur leur politique législative à l'égard du droit des brevets
Patent law is easily subject to acquisition and abusive exercise although it's sacred due to his qualification of property rights and strengthened by the international agreements and national laws. The failure of some patent offices amplifies the possibilities of this abusive appropriation. Situations of abuse of patent rights are more frequent in the high technology sector (pharmaceutical, biotechnology and computer industry).On the one hand, these abuses hinder the realization of the function assigned to patent law, and on the other hand, they restrict freedom of competition. The legal measures of patent law and those of competition law impose limits on the power of the patentees which is stemming from their exclusive right, to realize the general interest. However, these rules don't protect private individuals whose interests can be affected by the abusive use of patent rights. The theory of abuse of law, a general principle of the common law, fills this gap. In spite of its limited and prudent application on the patent right, its utility is not to neglect. It helps to prevent and to sanction the abnormal use of the patent right. The comparison between the Egyptian and French law shows that the difference in the level of economic and industrial development between the two countries affects their legislative policy with regards to patent law

The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of either a programmed instruction booklet or group lecture on knowledge of post myocardial infarction patients. A convenience sample of 30 post myocardial infarction patients enrolled in Cardiac Rehabilitation at a midwestern hospital were asked to participate.Subjects were assigned either to the experimental group or the lecture group. The pretest was administered to both groups. The experimental group received the self instruction booklet and the lecture group received a posttest was immediately completed by the participants. A nonequivalent pretest-posttest repeated measure design was utilized in the study.The results of the study showed a mean improvement in knowledge scores for both the booklet group and lecture group, with the booklet group having the larger gain in knowledge scores. The knowledge gain however, was not significant at the 0.05 level.

Анотація:

In this thesis we describe our study of two knowledge intensive Conversational Case-Based Reasoning (CCBR) systems and their methods. We look in particular at the way they have solved inferencing and question ranking. Then we continue with a description of our own design for a CCBR system, that will help patients share their experiences of side effects with drugs, with other patients. We describe how we create cases, how our question selection methods work and present an example of how the domain model will look. It is also included a simulation of how a dialogue would be for a patient. The design we have created is a good basis for implementing a knowledge intensive CCBR system. The system should work better than a normal CCBR system, because of the inferencing and question ranking methods, which should lessen the cognitive load on the user and require fewer questions answered, to reach a good solution.

In this dissertation I explore the role and importance of patent strategy for appropriating returns from innovation. In particular, I examine the mechanisms through which firms increase appropriability from patenting by employing complementary resources and capabilities and gauge their contribution to firm performance. To this end, I perform three empirical studies. In the first study, I focus on measuring patent value and demonstrate that the importance of firm resources and capabilities is much higher than previously thought. I interpret these results as providing strong support for the view that the design of patent strategy is crucial for profiting from innovation. In the second study, I look into a sample of technology acquisitions and examine under what circumstances firms profit from combining previously separate patent rights. I demonstrate that the merging of overlapping patent portfolios give rise to inimitable synergies, albeit only in complex technology industries. In addition, I find that firms are more likely to acquire targets with patents when their patent productivity is low, when they have a technologically diverse patent portfolio in complex technology industries and when they face an increased threat of being involved in patent suits. In the third study, I explore the role of patent strategies in the non-technological domain. I demonstrate that recent regulatory changes enabling the patenting of business methods can help patentees capture value from business model and management innovations. Moreover, I find that patenting experience and access to complementary assets are both crucial elements of a patenting strategy aimed at increasing appropriability. Taken together, these studies contribute towards bringing studies of patenting and the resource-based view of the firm closer together, to mutual advantage. This results in a better understanding of the effectiveness of patents at the firm-level and in a clearer operationalization of concepts of resources and resource interdependence.

La communication est au centre de la relation soignant-soigné en médecine. Si la littérature dans ce domaine est abondante, il reste aujourd’hui de nombreuses questions relatives à l'efficacité des formations des médecins à la communication en termes d'acquisition et de transfert de compétences. Ce travail de thèse a étudié ces questions au travers de quatre objectifs: l'évaluation de l'acquisition de compétences communicationnelles dans un contexte hautement émotionnel, l'évaluation du transfert de compétences communicationnelles dans la pratique clinique, l'évaluation de l'impact de l'acquisition et du transfert de compétences communicationnelles sur l'état émotionnel du patient, et l'évaluation de l'impact de l'acquisition et du transfert de compétences communicationnelles sur l'état émotionnel du patient et de son proche. Des programmes de formation à la communication ont donc été testés empiriquement. Les résultats de ces études montrent qu'un programme de formation à la communication permet l'acquisition de compétences communicationnelles centrées sur le patient ainsi que le transfert de ces compétences en situations cliniques. De plus, ce transfert de compétences est perçu par les patients. Ces études montrent néanmoins qu'un programme de formation à la communication n'a d'impact ni sur l'évolution de l'anxiété des patients lors de consultations médicales impliquant un patient seul ni sur l'évolution de l'anxiété des patients et de leurs proches lors de consultations médicales impliquant un patient accompagné par un proche. Ces résultats soulignent l'importance de proposer dès aujourd'hui ce type de formations dans les curriculums des médecins mais aussi de continuer à améliorer l'optimisation de ces formations à la relation soignant-soigné. /Communication is at the center of the doctor-patient relationship in medicine. Although literature is abundant in this area, there are now many questions about the effectiveness of communication training for physicians in terms of acquisition and transfer of skills. This thesis has addressed these issues through four objectives: the assessment of communication skills in a highly emotional context, the assessment of transfer of communication skills in clinical practice, the assessment of the impact of acquisition and transfer of communication skills on the patient's emotional state, and the assessment of the impact of acquisition and transfer of communication skills on the patient's and its relative's emotional state. Two communication skills training programs have been tested empirically. Results of these programs show that a training program allows the acquisition of patient-centred communication skills and the transfer of these skills in clinical practice. Moreover, this transfer of skills is perceived by patients. Results of the studies included in this thesis show however that a communication skills training program has no impact on the evolution of patient anxiety following medical consultation or on the evolution of patient and relative anxiety following medical consultation when patient was accompanied by a relative. These results underscore the importance of including this type of training in the curricula of doctors but also to further study the optimisation of such training program to doctor-patient relationship.

Sous la direction de Dominique Desjeux, Professeur émérite, expert en consommation et innovation, nous avons analysé le processus de diffusion de trois "innovations" du système de santé français portées par les institutions depuis le début du 21ème siècle : les associations de patients, l’Éducation Thérapeutique du Patient (ETP), et enfin les NTIC, et plus précisément les serious games. Respectivement sociale, symbolique et matérielle, ces trois solutions ont pour enjeu institutionnel diminuer les coûts de santé en améliorant l'apprentissage de vie des patients avec leur maladie mais également celui des professionnels de santé en formation initiale et continue. Pour chaque solution, dans une démarche qualitative, compréhensive et inductive, nous nous sommes interrogés sur les rugosités pouvant freiner leur réception par l'usager final, des patients ou des médecins. Avec un angle de vue assez original, un regard "socio-anthropologique" au coeur du secteur industriel, nous avons finalement reconstruit une partie du système d'action impliqué dans la circulation de savoirs en santé, profane et médical en cette période de crise sanitaire et d'explosion technologique
Within the framework of a "CIFRE convention, this work concerns the acquisition and the circulation of a " lay" and medical knowledge for the care of people who suffer from chronic diseases. Supervised by Dominique Desjeux, emeritus Professor, specialised in consumption and innovation, we have analyzed the diffusion process of three "innovations" of the French health system since the beginning of the 21th century: patients' associations, Therapeutic Education, and finally the ICT, and more exactly the serious games. Respectively social, symbolic and material, these three solutions have, for institutional issues, to decrease the costs of health care and management, by improving the "apprenticeship of life with disease" of patients, but also the professionnals trainning, initial as continuous. For each solution, in a qualitative, comprehensive and inductive approach, we wondered about the roughnesses which can slow down their "reception" by the final user, the patients or the doctors. With a rather original viewpoint, a "socio-anthropological" look at the heart of the branch of occidental industry, we finally reconstructed a part of the "action system" (Crozier, 1963) involved in the circulation of knowledges in health, from patients or medical way, in this transitory period of sanitary crisis and technological explosion

The field of neuropsychology can contribute to bilingualism research from a multidisciplinary perspective that ranges from psycholinguistics and brain imaging studies. While the psycholinguistic approach provides the outlook on linguistic processes in experimental study of patients with brain damage, neural models define the underlying brain areas of such processes and help to predict language deficits in said patients. Current neural models of bilingualism do not provide accurate predictions of deficits in bilinguals with brain damage since they have not been tested in a systematic way. However, they do offer a roadmap for the underlying cognitive and linguistic processes of bilingual language control and speech production. In this chapter, I propose how a neurolinguistic approach to bilingualism might be implemented in neuropsychology by including: (a) the application of traditional methods of cognitive (neuro)psychology to the field of bilingualism, such as dissociations, (b) the use of psycholinguistic methods, and (c) how neurodegenerative diseases may be a neuropsychological paradigm in which one can study bilingual language processes.

AbstractRemote patient monitoring (RPM) has been gaining popularity recently. However, health data acquisition is a significant challenge associated with patient monitoring. In continuous RPM, health data acquisition may miss health data during transmission. Missing data compromises the quality and reliability of patient risk assessment. Several studies suggested techniques for analyzing missing data; however, many are unsuitable for RPM. These techniques neglect the variability of missing data and provide biased results with imputation. Therefore, a holistic approach must consider the correlation and variability of the various vitals and avoid biased imputation. This paper proposes a coherent computation pattern-matching technique to identify and predict missing data patterns. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated using data collected from a field trial. Results show that the technique can effectively identify and predict missing patterns.

The goal of a QIBA Profile is to help achieve a useful level of performance for a given biomarker. The Claim (Section 2) describes the biomarker performance and is derived from the body of scientific literature meeting specific requirements, in particular test-retest studies. The Activities (Section 3) contribute to generating the biomarker. Requirements are placed on the Actors that participate in those activities as necessary to achieve the Claim. Assessment Procedures (Section 4) for evaluating specific requirements are defined as needed to ensure acceptable performance. Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) and the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) are being used clinically as qualitative (DWI) and quantitative (ADC) indicators of disease presence, progression or response to treatment. Use of ADC as a robust quantitative biomarker with finite confidence intervals places additional requirements on Sites, Acquisition Devices and Protocols, Field Engineers, Scanner Operators (MR Technologists, Radiologists, Physicists and other Scientists), Image Analysts, Reconstruction Software and Image Analysis Tools. Additionally, due to the intrinsic dependence of measured ADC values on biophysical tissue properties, both the Profile Claims and the associated scan protocols (Section 3.6.2) are organ-specific. All of these are considered Actors involved in Activities of Acquisition Device Pre-delivery and Installation, Subject Handling, Image Data Acquisition, Reconstruction, Registration, ADC map generation, Quality Assurance (QA), Distribution, Analysis, and Interpretation. The requirements addressed in this Profile are focused on achieving ADC values with minimal systematic bias and measurement variability. DISCLAIMER: Technical performance of the MRI system can be assessed using a phantom having known diffusion properties, such as the QIBA DWI phantom. The clinical performance target is to achieve a 95% confidence interval for measurement of ADC with a variable precision depending on the organ being imaged and assuming adequate technical performance requirements are met. While in vivo DWI/ADC measurements have been performed throughout the human body, this Profile focused on four organ systems, namely brain, liver, prostate, and breast as having high clinical utilization of ADC with a sufficient level of statistical evidence to support the Profile Claims derived from the current peer-reviewed literature. In due time, new DWI technologies with proven greater performance levels, as well as more organ systems will be incorporated in future Profiles. This document is intended to help a variety of users: clinicians using this biomarker to aid patient management; imaging staff generating this biomarker; MRI system architects developing related products; purchasers of such products; and investigators designing clinical trials utilizing quantitative diffusion-based imaging endpoints. Note that this document only states requirements specific to DWI to achieve the claim, not requirements that pertain to clinical standard of care. This QIBA Profile documents specifications and requirements to provide comparability and consistency for quantitative FDG-PET across scanners in oncology. It can be applied to both clinical trial use as well as individual patient management. This document organizes acquisition, reconstruction and post-processing, analysis and interpretation as steps in a pipeline that transforms data to information to knowledge. The document, developed through the efforts of the QIBA FDG-PET Biomarker Committee, has shared content with the FDG-PET UPICT protocol, as well as additional material focused on the devices used to acquire and analyze the FDG-PET data. The QIBA acquisition protocol is largely derived from the FDG-PET UPICT protocol for FDG-PET imaging in clinical trials. In the UPICT protocol, there is a carefully developed hierarchy with tiered levels of protocol compliance. This reflects the recognition that there are valid reasons to perform trials using different levels of rigor, even for the same disease/intervention combination. For example, a high level of image measurement precision may be needed in small, early-phase trials whereas a less rigorous level of precision may be acceptable in large, late-phase trials of the same drug in the same disease setting. This Profile defines the behavioral performance levels and quality control specifications for whole-body FDG-PET/CT scans used in single- and multi-center clinical trials of oncologic therapies. While the emphasis is on clinical trials, this process is also intended to apply for clinical practice. The specific claims for accuracy are detailed in the Claims section. A motivation for the development of this Profile is that while a typical PET/CT scanner measurement system (including all supporting devices) may be stable over days or weeks, this stability cannot be expected over the time that it takes to complete a clinical trial. In addition, there are well known differences between scanners and or the operation of the same type of scanner at different imaging sites. The intended audiences of this document include: Technical staff of software and device manufacturers who create products for this purpose Biopharmaceutical companies, oncologists, and clinical trial scientists designing trials with imaging endpoints Clinical research professionals Radiologists, nuclear medicine physicists, technologists, physicists and administrators at healthcare institutions (1) considering specifications for procuring new PET/CT equipment, (2) designing PET/CT acquisition protocols, (3) making quantitative measurements from PET/CT images Regulators, nuclear medicine physicians, oncologists, and others making decisions based on quantitative image measurements

The clinical application of Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) is widely available as a technique to optimize the therapeutic approach to treating vascular disease. Evaluation of atherosclerotic arterial plaque characteristics is currently based on qualitative biomarkers. However, the reproducibility of such findings has historically been limited even among experts (1). Quantitative imaging biomarkers have been shown to have additive value above traditional qualitative imaging metrics and clinical risk scores regarding patient outcomes (2). However, many definitions and cut-offs are present in the current literature; therefore, standardization of quantitative evaluation of CTA datasets is needed before becoming a valuable tool in daily clinical practice. To establish these biomarkers in clinical practice, techniques are required to standardize quantitative imaging across different manufacturers with cross-calibration. Moreover, the post-processing of atherosclerotic plaque segmentation needs to be optimized and standardized. The goal of a Quantitative Imaging Biomarker Alliance (QIBA) Profile is to provide an implementation guide to generate a biomarker with an effective level of performance, mostly by reducing variability and bias in the measurement. The performance claims represent expert consensus and will be empirically demonstrated at a subsequent stage. Users of this Profile are encouraged to refer to the following site to understand the document’s context: http://qibawiki.rsna.org/index.php/QIBA_Profile_Stages. All statistical performance assessments are stated in carefully considered metrics and according to strict definitions as given in (3-8), which also includes detailed, peer-reviewed rationale on the importance of adhering to such standards. The expected performance is expressed as Claims (Section 1.2). To achieve those claims, Actors (Scanners, Reconstruction Software, Image Analysis Tools, Imaging Physicians, Physicists, and Technologists) must meet the Checklist Requirements (Section 3) covering Subject Handling, Image Data Acquisition, Image Data Reconstruction, Image QA, and Image Analysis. This Profile is at the Clinically Feasible stage (qibawiki.rsna.org/index.php/QIBA_Profile_Stages) which indicate that multiple sites have performed the Profile and found it to be practical and expect it to achieve the claimed performance.
