Abstract. In the current study we examined a psychological mechanism linking Facebook use to depression. A survey was conducted with 319 undergraduates about their passive Facebook use, their frequency of making upward social comparisons on Facebook, the emotions evoked through these comparisons, and their levels of depression. Half of the participants were given questions about the Facebook comparisons they made with their close friends, while the other half were given questions about the Facebook comparisons they made with acquaintances. Analysis of the whole sample revealed that upward Facebook comparison elicited assimilative emotions (inspiration, optimism, and admiration) more than contrastive emotions did (envy and resentment). A path model was developed in which passive use of Facebook predicted the frequency of making upward social comparisons, and, in turn, the frequency of making upward Facebook comparisons predicted depression through two routes: one through contrastive emotions and other through assimilative emotions. The results suggested that the model fits the data. As expected, the frequency of upward Facebook comparisons was associated with the increases in frequency of both contrastive and assimilative emotions, and the associations of these two types of emotions with depression were in opposite directions: Depression increased as the frequency of contrastive emotions increased, and it decreased as the frequency of assimilative emotions increased. The strength of the latter aforementioned association was stronger when the comparison targets were acquaintances rather than close friends.

Studies of prolonged separation from the attachment figure that were conducted with infant monkeys during the middle of the 20th century identified a passive behavioral response, termed “despair,” that appeared to model human depressive illness. Studies in guinea pigs, which exhibit filial attachment that resembles attachment in monkeys, have described a similar passive response to briefer periods of maternal separation. Recent evidence indicates that elements of the immune system mediate the passive behavioral response of guinea pigs. These findings accord well with current ideas that immune responses contribute to depressive illness, suggest new hypotheses about how maternal separation might promote depression, and give us a rodent model in which such hypotheses might be tested.

It has recently been reported that identifying the depression severity of a person requires involvement of mental health professionals who use traditional methods like interviews and self-reports, which results in spending time and money. In this work we made solid contributions on short-term depression detection using every-day mobile devices. To improve the accuracy of depression detection, we extracted five factors influencing depression (symptom clusters) from the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), namely, physical activity, mood, social activity, sleep, and food intake and extracted features related to each symptom cluster from mobile devices’ sensors. We conducted an experiment, where we recruited 20 participants from four different depression groups based on PHQ-9 (the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the 9-item depression module from the full PHQ), which are normal, mildly depressed, moderately depressed, and severely depressed and built a machine learning model for automatic classification of depression category in a short period of time. To achieve the aim of short-term depression classification, we developed Short-Term Depression Detector (STDD), a framework that consisted of a smartphone and a wearable device that constantly reported the metrics (sensor data and self-reports) to perform depression group classification. The result of this pilot study revealed high correlations between participants` Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) self-reports and passive sensing (sensor data) in physical activity, mood, and sleep levels; STDD demonstrated the feasibility of group classification with an accuracy of 96.00% (standard deviation (SD) = 2.76).

Background and Objective Personality disorders are frequently associated with insomnia and depression, but little is known about the inter-relationships among these variables. Therefore, this study examined these inter-relationships and the possible mediating effect of insomnia on the association between specific personality pathologies and depression severity. Methods There were 138 study participants, including 69 individuals with depression and 69 healthy controls. The main variables were measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-24 (HAMD-24), Athens Sleep Insomnia Scale (AIS), and the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ-4+). Multivariate linear regression and mediation analysis were conducted. Results With the exception of the antisocial personality score, all the PDQ-4+ scores and AIS scores were significantly higher in the depression group than in the healthy control group (p < 0.001). In the total sample, all personality pathology scores (p < 0.001), except the antisocial personality score, had significant positive correlations with the AIS scores and HAMD-24 scores, and the AIS scores and HAMD-24 scores were positively correlated (r = 0.620, p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed that borderline personality, passive-aggressive personality, and insomnia positively predicted the severity of depression, after adjusting for sociodemographic covariates, and that insomnia partially mediated the associations of borderline personality and passive-aggressive personality with depression severity. Conclusions Borderline personality, passive-aggressive personality, and insomnia tend to increase the severity of depression, and the effect of borderline and passive-aggressive personality on depression severity may be partially mediated by insomnia. This is the first study to report these findings in a Chinese sample, and they may help researchers to understand the pathways from specific personality pathologies to the psychopathology of depression better, which should be useful for designing interventions to relieve depression severity, as the impact of specific personality pathology and insomnia should be considered.

Background College students are particularly at risk of depression and anxiety. These disorders have a serious impact on public health and affect patients’ daily lives. The potential for using smartphones to monitor these mental conditions, providing passively collected physiological and behavioral data, has been reported among the general population. However, research on the use of passive smartphone data to monitor anxiety and depression among specific populations of college students has never been reviewed. Objective This review’s objectives are (1) to provide an overview of the use of passive smartphone data to monitor depression and anxiety among college students, given their specific type of smartphone use and living setting, and (2) to evaluate the different methods used to assess those smartphone data, including their strengths and limitations. Methods This review will follow the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Two independent investigators will review English-language, full-text, peer-reviewed papers extracted from PubMed and Web of Science that measure passive smartphone data and levels of depression or anxiety among college students. A preliminary search was conducted in February 2022 as a proof of concept. Results Our preliminary search identified 115 original articles, 8 of which met our eligibility criteria. Our planned full study will include an article selection flowchart, tables, and figures representing the main information extracted on the use of passive smartphone data to monitor anxiety and depression among college students. Conclusions The planned review will summarize the published research on using passive smartphone data to monitor anxiety and depression among college students. The review aims to better understand whether and how passive smartphone data are associated with indicators of depression and anxiety among college students. This could be valuable in order to provide a digital solution for monitoring mental health issues in this specific population by enabling easier identification and follow-up of the patients. AbstractParental depression is associated with disruptions in the parent–child relationship, exposure to stressful family life events, and offspring depressive symptoms. Evidence suggests that intergenerational transmission of depression involves environmental and inherited contributions. We sought to evaluate the role of passive gene–environment correlation (rGE) in relation to depression, family life events that were due to parental behavior, and parental positivity in a sample where children varied in genetic relatedness to their rearing parents. Our study included 865 families with children born through assisted conception (444 related to both parents, 210 related to the mother only, 175 related to the father only, and 36 related to neither parent). Consistent with previous studies, the intergenerational transmission of depressive symptoms was largely due to environmental factors, although parent and child gender influenced results. Maternal and paternal depressive symptoms were associated with reduced positivity and increased parentally imposed life events regardless of parent–child relatedness. Results of path analysis were consistent with passive rGE for both maternal and paternal positivity in that positivity partially mediated the link between maternal/paternal depression and child depression only in genetically related parent–child pairs. Results also suggested passive rGE involving parentally imposed life events for mothers and fathers although passive rGE effects were smaller than for positivity.

This article will compare and contrast the author’s theory of Habitual Boredom with a phenomenological account of Unipolar Depression. The habitually bored show more external ambivalence, passive avoidance, and shame, as well as a tendency toward passive hope and identity confusion. The depressed show more internal ambivalence, willful (but futile) determination, and guilt as well as tendency toward hopelessness and identity objectification. The article also discusses some of the experiential similarities and developmental differences between the two phenomenon as well as some aspects of the defensive structure that initially prevents the bored from becoming depressed.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the indifferent passive behavior described in persons with right cerebral hemisphere dysfunction (Bear & Fedio, 1977; Critchley, 1966; Denny-Brown, Meyer & Horenstein, 1952). The process of caring for another person encompasses an interpersonal relationship with that person. Passive behavior may interfere with that relationship (Fried, 1970), and therefore jeopardize care. This correlational descriptive study was based on an explanatory model which included hemispheric side of lesion, attention, neglect of extrapersonal hemispace, passive behavior, and mood/emotion. The following indicators of outcome variables were used: attention--bilateral skin conductance level and skin conductance response; neglect--line bisection and cancellation tasks; passive behavior--a modification of Mays' (1973) Activity Passivity Scale; mood/emotion--the anxiety and depression subscales of Kellner and Sheffield's (1973) Symptom Rating Test. The sample comprised 10 persons with a single right hemisphere stroke and 10 persons with a left hemisphere stroke. The strength of the relationships among the variables was assessed only for persons with right hemisphere stroke. The data from this sample support some of the theorized links in the conceptual model, but not others. The predicted positive relationship between right hemisphere stroke and neglect, and the negative relationship between right hemisphere stroke and anxiety were demonstrated (r = .3177 and r = -.4353, respectively). The predicted negative relationship between right hemisphere stroke and attention was not demonstrated. Unexpected significant positive correlations existed between right hemisphere stroke and estimates of attention from the left hand (r = .3111 to r = .4472). No demonstrable relationship existed between right hemisphere stroke and passive behavior. Another unexpected finding was that the scale to scale and part to whole correlations for the concepts mood/emotion and passive behavior were strikingly different for the two groups. The fact that the two groups of subjects did not interpret the contents of the two scales similarly indicated that persons with right hemisphere dysfunction view the world quite differently from those with left hemisphere dysfunction. Appreciation of these differences may allow formulation and implementation of effective care plans which will reduce frustration in both client and caregiver.

Despite the fact that, the Rorschach test is the most used personality assessment tool in France; few studies have focused on the validation or analysis of the psychometric properties of this instrument. Therefore, the objectives of our study are the following: To re-examine and verify the validity of the Rorschach Comprehensive System for the diagnosis of depression (1) to evaluate the depression index (DEPI) (2). evaluate the social incompetence index (CDI) (3) re-study the active and passive variables (a: p) and (4) the validity of the reflective answers (Fr + rF> 0) (5) compare the results of our study with those of Sultan et al. (2004).To operationalize our objectives, two samples of French adults (18-70 years old) were recruited: a normative sample and a depressive sample. Five tools were used: Rorschach Comprehensive System, GHQ.12, BDI, T.A.T, SFSC.The results show (1) that there is no significant difference on the depression index except when DEPI = 6; (2) A significant difference is observed between our two normative and depressive samples on the CDI index; (3 and 4) Regarding the normative sample, there is no correlation between the Rorschach score on the p> a + 1 variable and the TAT subjects score, or the correlation between the S score and the SF score. -SC and the score of the reflective answers;(5) The comparison between the combined normative sample and the Exner normative sample indicates a significant difference on the following variables: SumSha, Fr + rF, X-%, WSum6, XA%. Finally, the results show a clinical interest of the Rorschach Comprehensive System namely that a DEPI = 6 is to be considered as a psychopathological indication, and that the CDI index is very relevant for the psychological diagnosis of depressive disorders

This thesis explored whether haemodynamic responses to psychological stress test predict future blood pressure (BP) levels: the Reactivity Hypothesis. The research included a systematic review and two prospective cohort studies in the UK and Thai samples. In addition, the Blunted Reactivity Hypothesis, which posits that cardiovascular reactivity is inversely related to symptoms of anxiety and depression, was examined in cross-sectional analyses. A systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression with 41 prospective cohort studies (from 1950 to 2012) examined whether cardiovascular responses to psychological stress tests predict future BP levels, hypertension status, preclinical coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiac events. Three possible moderators were included in analyses: type of task (active versus passive coping), age group (children versus adults), and duration of follow-up (short versus long-term follow-up). The review found that systolic BP reactions to psychological stress tests predict future systolic BP levels and that there was better prediction in child samples with shorter follow-up periods. Similarly, diastolic BP reactions to psychological stress predicted future diastolic BP levels. Cardiovascular reactions to psychological stress tests did not predict hypertension, preclinical CHD, or cardiac events. Cross-sectional analysis of two studies conducted in the UK and Thailand provided some evidence that anxiety and depressive symptoms were negatively associated with cardiovascular reactivity: these findings supported the Blunted Cardiovascular Hypothesis. However, these relationships were observed in the UK sample, but not in the Thai sample. Further, Thai participants responded to psychological stress task with large cardiovascular reactions, of a similar magnitude to the UK participants and observed in previous studies of Europeans and North Americans. Finally, prospective analyses revealed that systolic BP responses to mental arithmetic predict future systolic BP levels after one year of follow-up in both UK and Thai individuals, after controlling for baseline cardiovascular activity and traditional risk factors. In contrast, haemodynamic responses did not predict future BP. These results provide support for the “Reactivity Hypothesis” although the effect sizes were relatively small. However, responses to only one of the three stressors, mental arithmetic, predicted future BP implicating beta-adrenergically mediated cardiovascular responses. However, there was no physiologic evidence (i.e., cardiac output responses) that suggested beta-adrenergic mechanisms. Accordingly, future studies should examine alternate mechanisms (e.g., platelet aggregation and endothelial function) and cardiovascular responses in larger samples with a longer follow-up to further clarify the predictive value of reactivity in the development of hypertension, along with potential mechanisms.

The Great Depression marked a fateful passage in the annals of the American people. President Roosevelt's New Deal, the nation's signature response, proved to be a determined but erratic reaction. Against the backdrop of a nation deeply mired in an unrelenting international depression, dramatic events played themselves out in the lives of the men and women of Utah. Throughout, fidelity to principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency were sorely challenged. The people of Utah found succor in two almost diametrically opposed responses. The New Deal offered an amalgam of programs and panaceas through which the federal government attempted to deliver economic relief, recovery, and reform. Able to pour millions upon millions of dollars on troubled waters, the New Deal offered the nation and Utah a vision of economic security rooted in an expanded federal-state partnership. In contrast, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fused the principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency into a new program–the Church Security Plan.

Deltagarna fyllde i enkäten under lektionstid.
The aim of this study is to examine how self-esteem is related to usage of social media, and if there are any gender differences between boys and girls regarding self-esteem, spent time and behavior on social media. The questions to be answered are: (I) Is there a relation between self-esteem and spent time on social media? (II) Is there a relation between self-esteem and active usage of social media? (III) Is there a difference in self-esteem between active and passive users of social media? (IV) Is there a difference between girls and boys regarding self-esteem, spent time and behavior on social media? The study has a quantitative approach and the material was collected by using surveys. The sample consisted of 140 adolescents (age 13-16) and was selected through a convenience sample. The participants filled in the survey during class. The survey was a compilation of three different measuring instruments; Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale (RSES), Social Media Engagement Questionnaire (SMEQ) and Passive and Active Facebook Use Measure (PAUM). The answers were processed statistically with correlation analyses and t-test. The result showed weak negative correlations between self-esteem and the three variables spent time, active social usage respective active non-social usage. The result didn’t show any significant difference between passive and active users. Boys reported higher levels of self-esteem than girls. Girls reported higher levels of passive usage, active social usage and active non-social usage. A possible conclusion could be that there is a connection between social media usage and self-esteem. The result in this study showed that large amount of social media usage could be related to lower self-esteem. There seems to be a difference between boys and girls regarding self-esteem and social media usage. Further research on the younger generation is needed to find out how the young individual could use social media in ways that promotes self-esteem.

AbstractWhole-body hyperthermia (WBH), induced by passive heating, and active fever therapy induced by pyrogenic drugs, have been accepted as therapy of various diseases for many decades. However, the introduction of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs caused the interest in this traditional therapy to decline. The development of modern WBH using infrared irradiation (IR) started in the 1960s.Three levels of hyperthermia differ fundamentally in practical implementation, mechanisms of action, and indications. Mild WBH is stress-free and aims mainly to muscle relaxation and increased perfusion in the locomotor system. Fever-range whole-body hyperthermia (FRWBH) requires a more extensive nursing care due to major thermoregulatory stress. FRWBH is applied for stimulation of anti-tumor immune responses and for anti-inflammatory effects in case of chronic inflammation. Moreover, anti-depressive effects of FRWBH could recently be shown. Extreme WBH needs an intensive care environment and aims to the direct damage of cancer cells or therapy-resistant pathogens. In general, inconsistent effects of WBH on blood perfusion must be taken into account if combined with medication. Two commercially available medical WBH devices both use water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA), but deviate in the practical implementation. Contraindications and the risk of side effects differ essentially between the three levels and must carefully be observed.

Rimmer, who did not always agree with Swedenborg, became a Spiritualist who tried to contact the dead through séances and had his own visions and his own visits to celestial spheres. Possibly manic depression played a role in these otherworldly experiences. Some of his pictures are clearly linked to apparitions that he mentioned experiencing. His largest surviving painting, which is mistitled English Hunting Scene, is a spring-time landscape with his daughters and a spiritual guide at the right, observing different overlapping scenes from the Middle Ages with a modern, railroad bridge in the distance. The daughters are observing ghosts who re-enact what they did in that space in the past. Some did not inhabit the space at the same time so they do not interact. This juxtaposition of different times occurs in two experimental drawings by Rimmer as well, suggestive of the passage of time. A number of his works reflect his otherworldly visions which might include angels or demons or imaginary beings such as those shown in Shooting Stars. The Hunting Scene also contains serfs or different social classes of ghosts related to the artist's empathy for the working poor. The picture pertains to teaching through seeing and Rimmer's inspirational role as an art instructor.

This chapter reviews common therapeutic issues and various questions asked by patients during IPT. Common therapeutic issues include deciding whether a patient’s main problem is a psychiatric illness or a personality disorder, dealing effectively with passive or intellectualizing patients, keeping to the agreed-on focus and time limit of treatment, and making therapeutic use of silence in session. Technical issues such as rating scales and recording sessions are discussed, and IPT was contrasted with other types of psychotherapy such as CBT. Common patient questions include how IPT works, therapist credentials, lateness to sessions, family members attending treatment sessions, the genetic and biological basis of depression, the use of alcohol and drugs, recurrence of depression, and suicide. Some problems that are more often seen in primary care settings are also covered, such as depression manifesting through physical symptoms and poor adherence to treatment.

Objective: This research review aimed to investigate yoga as an alternative treatment to trauma-related disorders as depression, anxiety and PTSD. Method: We searched different databases as Oria, PsychNet, and PubMed, and a hand search of relevant papers. Only quantitative studies were included as there were few good qualitative studies. Results: The results are somewhat varying in yoga as an effective intervention for trauma-related disorders or symptoms. In some studies the yoga group show greater improvements than the passive control group. When the control group is active there seems to be less of a difference between the groups. Even though most of these studies have small sample sizes there is an indication that yoga may improve trauma-related disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Since yoga is a time-effective and have low costs it may be considered as an alternative when more time consuming and expensive treatment is not available or possible. Yoga may also be implemented as an adjunctive treatment.

Background: Cannabis use rates have been escalating in recent years within the United States, and the effects of cannabis on motivation and effort-based decision making have been of increased interest. Amotivational syndrome is a term used to refer to lack of motivation, passive personality, non-productive behavior, and lower educational attainment related to chronic cannabis use. However, past literature has reported mixed findings for the effects of cannabis on motivation across both behavioral and self-report studies; therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate the association between frequent cannabis use, motivated behavior, and self-reported apathy in individuals 18 years and older. Methods: Cannabis users who reported, on average, 3 or more days/week of cannabis use over the past year, and healthy controls who reported once/month or less cannabis use over the past year were recruited. Participants withheld from substance use 12 hours prior to the study visit. They completed a breathalyzer test, urine toxicology screen, the Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES), and the Effort Expenditure for Rewards Task (EEfRT), a computerized button-pressing task that measures effort-based decision making whereby individuals must increase effort for monetary reward. There were no significant differences between groups on any demographic characteristics except for past 30-day alcohol use (p = 0.001), and depression scores (p = 0.005; determined by the Beck Depression Inventory-II), which were both greater in cannabis users relative to healthy controls. A repeated measures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to examine the effects of Group, reward magnitude, probability, and their interaction on hard task selections on the EEfRT, controlling for alcohol and depressive symptoms. A separate ANCOVA examined between-group differences on the AES with the same covariates. Results: The main results indicated that relative to healthy controls, cannabis users were significantly more likely to select hard tasks on the EEfRT regardless of reward magnitude or probability of winning the reward (p = 0.014, partial η2=0.10). Self-reported apathy was higher in cannabis users relative to controls (p = 0.02), but after controlling for alcohol use and depressive symptoms, these group differences were no longer significant (p = 0.46). Furthermore, the number of hard task selections on the EEfRT was not significantly related to self-reported apathy in cannabis users (p = 0.68), or healthy controls (p = 0.52). Conclusions: These findings indicate that cannabis users exhibit a greater likelihood of exerting more effort for reward, suggesting enhanced motivation relative to healthy controls. Thus, the current results do not support the amotivation hypothesis in adult frequent cannabis users. Despite some harms of frequent cannabis use, amotivation may not be among them.

Background: Dementia is an acquired status, characterized by a decline in at least two cognitive domains, severe enough to affect social or occupational functioning. The standard pharmacological treatment for dementia has limited efficacy, especially in non-cognitive outcomes. Music therapy (MT) is being studied as anon-pharmacological therapy for Dementia, due to its stimulating effects. Objective: Understand the main benefits of MT in dementia patients, through a systematic review. Methods: A literature research was carried out using the databases: PubMed and Scielo. The period of publication was limited from 2016 to 2021, with the search keywords: Music Therapy, Dementia. 297 studies were found, and 15 met the inclusion criteria for our review. Results: MT includes passive (listening to music) and active participation, such as playing instruments, singing or songwriting. Listening to music is linked with wild cortical activation and is a strong stimulus for neuroplastic changes. MT provides multimodal skills, performing integration of various cognitive functions, such as memory and attention, especially in interactive interventions. Conclusion: Studies showed mixed results, especially due to the lack of standardized methods for musical stimulus, but in general, MT was considered to improve verbal and language fluency, anxiety and depression levels, apathy, cognitive function and quality of life, and decrease neuronal degeneration by enhancing cerebral plasticity.

In order to avoid high utility demand charges from cooling during the summer and to level a building’s electrical demand-profile, precooling of the building’s massive structure can be applied to shift cooling-related thermal loads in response to utility pricing signals. Several previous simulation and experimental studies have shown that proper precooling can attain considerable reduction of operating cost in buildings. This paper systematically evaluates the merits of the passive building thermal capacitance to minimize energy cost using optimal control. The evaluation is conducted by means of a sensitivity analysis utilizing a dynamic building energy simulation program coupled to a popular technical computing environment. The optimal controller predicts the required extent of precooling (zone temperature setpoint depression) depending on utility rate structure, occupancy and on-peak period duration and onset, internal gains, building mass, occupancy period temperature setpoint range, and weather as characterized by diurnal temperature and relative humidity swings. In addition to quantifying the building response, energy consumption, and utility cost, this paper extracts the dominant features of the optimal precooling strategies for each of the investigated cases so that guidelines for near-optimal building thermal mass savings can be developed in the future. These will offer guidance to HVAC system operators and practitioners on how to adapt existing or design new building thermal mass control strategies in order to save operating cost or energy.

media use is inherently linked to everyday life in the digital world, from professional contexts to leisure time. Prior research focused on antecedents of social media use such as personality traits, age, gender, social skills, and also on broad range of its various effects. Positive effects include extension of friendship network, diminishing anxiety in social interaction, and improving exercise motivation. Problematic social media use and addiction are related to stress, depression, suicidal thoughts, loneliness, and scarce school engagement. Less attention has been paid to the relationship between social media use and well-being. Inconsistent results were obtained; being emphasized either small relationship between time spent using social media and psychological well-being, or absence of significant correlation. Aims: Therefore, we analyzed in this research the relationship between social media use and subjective well-being. Starting from the necessary distinction between the passive and active social media use, the aim of this research was to analyze the direct and indirect effects of active use and self-esteem on subjective well-being. Method: Based on a cross-sectional design, the survey data was collected from a sample consisted of 653 participants (male = 274; Mage= 21.52; SD = 4.33). To verify the hypothesized direct and indirect effects included in the multiple mediation model, a path analysis was performed. Results: The findings showed positive association between active social media use, self-esteem, affective engagement in social media use, sense to belong to online community, and subjective well-being, The path analysis revealed excellent fit between proposed multiple mediation model and sample data. Active social media use and self-esteem have directly effects on subjective well-being, and indirectly via affective engagement in social media use and sense to belong to online community. The relationship between affective engagement in social media use and sense to belong to online community is mediated by number of friends or followers on social media platforms. Conclusion: The findings of this study extend the previous research, providing support for the relationship between active social media use and subjective well-being.

Currently, the educational system of Ukraine is experiencing hard times due to full-scale war. A literature review revealed that military actions harm the mental health of civilians and cause fear, stress, loneliness and burnout. Therefore, learning strategies in wartime should contain effective and psychologically comfortable assimilation of new knowledge. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mindset activities in boosting the psychological well-being of engineering students and improving their EFL grammar and vocabulary skills. A two-group pre and post-test design was used. First-year engineering students were included in the study. PHQ-9 depression questionnaire was used to measure the rate of depression before and after treatment. The questionnaire responses in the experimental group before and after treatment showed that the number of students with moderate depression decreased to 15% after treatment and the percentage of students with minimal depression increased by 20%. The changes in mild depression were minor (5%). By contrast, the respondents’ answers to the pre-and post-treatment questionnaire in the control sample did not show significant shifts from severe to minimal rates of depression. To compare students’ scores in EFL pre- and post-grammar and vocabulary tests after applying mindset activities the Fisher’s Exact Test was used. Twenty-five students of the experimental group (83.3%) passed the test (n1 = 30) and twenty students (57.1%) succeeded in passing the test in the control sample (n2 = 35). The application of the test showed that the obtained empirical value φ (2.359) is higher than the critical value φ (1.64) at P < 0.05. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that employing mindset activities in EFL classes during wartime can help reduce the rate of depression among engineering students and improve EFL grammar and vocabulary skills.

When a ship sailing at low speed passes a moored ship with a drift angle due to wind effect, the flow field around the ships is very different to the flow field without a drift angle and will cause larger hydrodynamic forces on the moored ship, compared with those without a drift angle. In this paper, a flow model in XBeach is applied to study the effects of a passing ship at low speed with various drift angles on the moored ship. This method is based on the non-hydrostatic shallow water equations. Simulations are carried out for a 12500 TEU container ship passing a moored Panamax ship by using XBeach. The water level depression, return current and hydrodynamic forces on the moored ship are obtained and compared with the measurement data. Then the results at positive and negative drift angles are compared with the results at zero drift angle, respectively. The influence of the drift angle on the passing ship effects is analyzed and the most serious situation for the moored ship, when the passing ship has different drift angles, is indicated. Finally, conclusions concerning the effects of a passing ship with a drift angle on a moored ship are drawn.

The two important considerations in the design of a heat exchanger are — the total heat transfer rate and the allowable pressure drop. The allowable pressure drop defines the maximum flow rate through a single microchannel and economics drives the design towards this flow rate. Typically the flow rate in the microchannel is in laminar flow regime (Re < 2000) due to smaller hydraulic diameter. The laminar flow heat transfer in a smooth microchannel is limited by the boundary layer thickness. Commonly the heat transfer rate is enhanced by passively disrupting the laminar boundary layer using protrusions or depressions in the channel walls. More often these methods are best applicable at small range of Reynolds number where the heat transfer rate enhancement is more than the pressure drop increase and break down as the flow rate is changed outside the range. The benefit of a flow disruption method can be reaped only if it provides higher heat transfer enhancement than the increase in the pressure drop at the working flow rates in the microchannel. A heat transfer efficient microchannel design has been developed using wall features that create stable disrupted flow and break the laminar boundary layer in a microchannel over a wide range of flow rates. The paper experimentally investigates the developed design for the heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop increase compared to a smooth wall microchannel. A simple microchannel device was designed and fabricated with and without wall features. The experiments with single gas phase fluid showed promising results with the developed wall feature design as the heat transfer rate increase was 20% to 80% more than the pressure drop increase in the laminar regime. The wall feature design was an important variable to affect the magnitude of performance enhancement in different flow regime. A general criterion was developed to judge the efficacy of wall feature design that can be used during a microchannel heat exchanger design.
