The mathematical investigations of natural phenomena in the seventeenth century led to the inventions of calculus and probability. While we know the works of eminent natural philosophers and mathematicians such as Isaac Newton (1643-1727), we know little about the learned women who made important contributions in the seventeenth century. This article features Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia (1618-1680), whose intellectual ability and curiosity left a unique mark in the history of mathematics. While some of her family members were deeply involved in politics, Elisabeth led an independent, scholarly life, and she was a close correspondent of René Descartes (1596-1650) and Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716).

Cette recherche combine des éléments qui appartiennent à l'histoire de la philosophie, à la philosophie politique et à la philosophie du langage. Son objet est d’observer et de recomposer certaines des étapes qui marquent, dans la philosophie de Rousseau, l’émergence progressive et radicale du langage en tant que facteur politique. Plus précisément, elle fournit une étude de la conception pragmatique du langage qui sous-tend la thèse principale de l’Essai sur l’origine des langues, selon laquelle la parole ne tire pas son origine des besoins physiques mais des passions considérées comme « besoins moraux ». Rousseau estime que contrairement aux besoins physiques, inéluctablement ressentis par les hommes indépendamment de l’éventualité et des circonstances de leur rencontre, les passions ne s’animent jamais « tant qu’elles sont de nul effet » (Emile, II, OC IV, Pléiade, p. 321), à savoir tant qu’elles ne sont pas en mesure d’agir l’une sur l’autre à l’intérieur d’une relation dont elles constituent les pôles. Or précisément parce qu’il pense que la parole, à son origine, a été occasionnée par ce type d’affections qui se développent dans l’âme humaine en produisant leurs effets à l’intérieur des relations, il considère également que son rôle primitif n’a pas consisté à représenter un contenu préconstitué par rapport à sa matérialisation phonique, mais à exercer une force immanente à l’expression sonore du sentiment. En ce sens, la tâche que s’assigne Rousseau dans l’Essai sur l’origine des langues est de rendre compte des facteurs qui ont permis à la langue de se rendre porteuse, dans un moment chronologiquement et logiquement secondaire de son histoire, de significations générales et abstraites de toute attitude émotive inhérente à l’acte d’énonciation du sujet. Le grand intérêt de cette explication consiste à attribuer l’éclosion et le progrès de la dimension représentative du langage à une modification de sa fonction sociale et politique, une modification qui consiste dans la suppression graduelle de la nécessité d’exercer par la parole une action morale sur autrui, d’exciter et de calmer les passions par les sonorités du discours, d’agir avec force dans le langage et d’influer par là-même sur la société
This research combines elements of history of philosophy, political philosophy, and philosophy of language. It aims at investigating and reconstructing certain stages which, in Rousseau’s philosophy, mark the progressive and radical emergence of language as a political factor. In particular, the research provides a study of Rousseau’s pragmatic account of language, insofar as it underpins the main thesis of the Essay on the Origin of Languages. According to this thesis, speech does not originate from physical needs, but from human passions, conceived of as “moral needs”. Rousseau affirms that, contrary to physical needs, which inevitably arise in humans regardless of different occasions and circumstances, “the passions never become animated so long as they are of no effect” (Emile II, A. Bloom tr., New York, 1979, p. 92). Passions, that is, are only aroused in humans by acting upon each other, within a relationship of which they constitute the opposite poles. Since, according to Rousseau, speech was first caused by human passions — which can only develop in the soul and produce their effects within social relationships — he maintains that the original function of speech was not to represent a content that existed previously to its phonic materialisation. Rather, its primary role was to exert a power that is immanent to the voiced expression of feelings. In this sense, Rousseau’s goal in the Essay on the Origin of Languages is to provide an account of the elements that allowed language to become the bearer, in a logically and chronologically subsequent moment of its history, of general and abstract meanings, which are independent of any emotional attitude inherent in the subjective act of enunciation. A particularly interesting aspect of Rousseau’s explanation is that it ascribes the birth and progress of the representative dimension of language to a modification of its social and political function. This modification consists in the gradual suppression of the human needs to produce moral effects in the souls of others, excite or calm down passions through the sounds and tones of speech, and to exert an influence on society by forcefully acting through language

In her early twenties, Eliza Orme decided to enter the legal profession, enlisting the help of Helen Taylor, the stepdaughter and assistant of John Stuart Mill. Orme’s award-winning performance in her university courses attracted the attention of other mentors, some of whom tried to help her secure a position, not in one of the Inns of Court (which remained unthinkable) but by working as a junior in a barrister’s chambers. That was unsuccessful. Later, guided by another mentor, she established her own chambers in Chancery Lane, the legal district, and began working there with Mary Ellen Richardson. They were conveyancers and patent agents, and both were directors of the Nineteenth-Century Building Society (an organization for financing real estate transactions). Some of their legal work was legitimate because unregulated, while the more lucrative, regulated, opportunities came about when senior barristers paid for Orme and her associates to prepare legal documents which would appear under the official (male) signature. In an enthusiastic letter to Taylor, Orme described their chambers as ‘a miniature Girton’. There is evidence of discrimination and challenges, including a fellow-student who sought to appropriate a scholarship she had earned and a newspaper column speculating on the matrimonial ambitions of someone who had led her class in Roman Law. To counter this, Howsam offers a letter from an American woman lawyer describing Eliza Orme and Reina Emily Lawrence working together in a busy, well-appointed office: ‘a fine chaos’. Orme persisted through the challenges and prospered, along with Richardson, Lawrence and other women colleagues. The chapter ends with Leslie Howsam’s informed speculations about the level of Orme’s commitment to legal practice—was that the extent of her ambition, or was it a step on the way to exercising her passionate interest in contemporary politics?

For more than 4,000 years, poets and storytellers have sung of the delights and sufferings of love and lust. This chapter reviews what scholars from various disciplines have discovered about the nature of passionate love and sexual desire. Anthropologists and evolutionary psychologists have assumed that passionate love is a cultural universal. Cultural researchers, historians, and social psychologists have emphasized the stunning diversity in the way passionate love and sexual desire have been viewed and experienced. Culture, ethnicity and the rules passed down by political and religious authorities have a profound impact on the way people think about and act out love and sex. Marriage for love and sex for pleasure have always been deeply threatening to political and religious leaders who have feared the individualistic implications of permissive approaches to romance and passion. Individualism and personal choice are seen as the enemies of order and authority; such freedom are deemed heretical, sinful, dangerous, and an invitation to chaos, selfishness, and anarchy. The fight over the rules governing love, marriage, divorce, and sex stands as one of history’s central and most powerful themes. Today, however, in the era of widespread travel, global capitalism, and the World Wide Web, many of these traditional cross-cultural differences seem to be disappearing. Authority is giving way nearly everywhere to increased freedom, particularly in the personal realm, in the world of passion. Is the erosion of traditional authority and strict personal rules really happening—and if so what does that portend for personal and societal futures?

Cities embody myth and fact, blurring the border between the two. All this applies especially to the fraught history and troubled body of the American city.

In recent decades, sea power has undoubtedly prevailed. However, With the changes in the international political and economic situation and the frequent occurrence of wars and accidents (for example, the conflict in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the backlog of goods in ports due to the epidemic), maritime transportation has been restricted at the present time. Coupled with the development and application of new technologies (examples include distributed photovoltaics, high-speed rail, ultra-high-voltage transmission technology and thorium-based nuclear power plants) and the rise of new economies, the rise of land power has become a new trend. In other words, “circulating power”, which combines sea power and land power, provides a new development perspective for human society. The interconnectedness of the world will beyond the “national center” perspective, bring about the well-being of mankind, and convert the struggle for power into economic cooperation and prosperity.

Having been ordered to remove organs from an executed prisoner, Enver has since taken up a major role in the campaign against forced organ harvesting and is determined to bring China’s darkest secret to light. In this personal testimony, Enver shares his experience working as a surgeon in Xinjiang and reflects more broadly on the situation of Uyghurs in China, explaining that unless Uyghurs earn the sympathy and support of China’s Han majority, unless it is understood that all Chinese people are the victims of the same authoritarian regime, ethnic animosity will continue to serve the political purposes of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Professor Leslie R. Marchant was a Western Australian historian of international renown. Richly educated as a child in political philosophy and critical reason, Marchant’s understandings of western political philosophies were deepened in World War Two when serving with an international crew of the merchant navy. After the war’s end, Marchant was appointed as a Protector of Aborigines in Western Australia’s Depart of Native Affairs. His passionate belief in Enlightenment ideals, including the equality of all people, was challenged by his experiences as a Protector. Leaving that role, he commenced his studies at The University of Western Australia where, in 1952, his Honours thesis made an early case that genocide had been committed in the administration of Aboriginal people in Western Australia. In the years that followed, Marchant became an early researcher of modern China and its relationship with the West, and won respect for his archival research of French maritime history in the Asia-Pacific. This work, including the publication of France Australe in 1982, was later recognised with the award of a French knighthood, the Chevalier d’Ordre National du Mèrite, and his election as a fellow to the Royal Geographical Society. In this festschrift, scholars from The University of Notre Dame Australia appraise Marchant’s work in such areas as Aboriginal history and policy, Westminster traditions, political philosophy, Australia and China and French maritime history.
