Анотація:
The paper describes the mechanical qualities of thermoset – epoxy resin filled with recycled rubber in the form of micro-particles. Such an application of waste can be regarded as material usage which should be preferred to other ways of waste handling. Micro-particles of recycled rubber affect the mechanical qualities of polymer in which they are dispersed. The paper quantifies cohesive and adhesive properties of the filled epoxy resin. Filling polymers – thermosets with waste fillers saves costs, it does not burden the environment, and it is inexpensive. The results described in this paper can lead to enlarging the application areas of recycled rubbers. As the filler, recycled rubber gained by the process of an ecological disposal of tyres by Gumoeko, s.r.o. (private limited company) was used.

In the present paper, butadiene rubber is analyzed. The activation energy variation of butadiene rubber material has been studied and found that non-Arrhenius behavior. On this basis, the life prediction model of the rubber sealing material has been established, in which the activation energy is the characterization parameters. The storage lifetime of the conducted rubber seal material has been calculated. Under the same conditions, the storage lifetime are 7 years, while according to the GB the storage life are 20.25 years, with comparing the actual storage of the material life of 3-5 years, could prove more accurate modeling and prediction methods established in this study. This would provide a theoretical basis for more accurate life prediction of rubbers.

This paper is devoted to the main characteristics of adhesive composites based on chlorinated isobutylene isoprene rubber with different content of chlorine obtained by the novel technology of mechanochemical halide modification of rubbers based on mechanical initiating of the combination reaction of halide in liquid phase. In the work the basic properties characterizing adhesive, protective and paint coatings have been studied with the main focus on dependence of the materials properties on chlorine content in chlorinated isobutylene isoprene rubber used as polymer basis of adhesive compositions under investigation. Based on the study results of the technological properties of elastomeric adhesive composition, the optimal adhesive composition has been recommended.

Abstract The present paper describes a basic study of the devulcanization of unfilled model silicone rubber vulcanizates using a continuous ultrasonic reactor. The devulcanization was conducted under several processing conditions. Cure behavior, rheological properties, structural characteristics of the devulcanized rubber, and mechanical properties of revulcanized rubbers were studied. Gel fraction and crosslink density measurement indicate that the rubber is partially devulcanized. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results imply that the creation of a branched structure in the network is a possibility after devulcanization. Under the optimal devulcanization condition, the mechanical properties of revulcanized rubber are better than those of the virgin rubber. Devulcanized silicone rubber was also blended with the virgin one. The blends show the same tensile strength and modulus as the virgin rubber but higher elongation.

The paper shows the perspective direction of using by-products and wastes of the petrochemical industry in the production of rubber products. It was revealed that oligomers synthesized from petrochemical by-products can be used as promising additives. The technological aspects of the use of additives based on PN-6 oil and its combination with an oligomer synthesized from by-products of polybutadiene production in the technology of obtaining filled emulsion rubbers were studied. It has been found that the best way to combine oligomeric additives with the matrix of synthetic rubbers is to introduce them into latex in the form of dispersions. The influence of coagulants of different nature on the process of emulsion rubber release filled with oil oligomeric anthioxidant dispersion was investigated. It was found that the change in the mass ratio of oil-oligomeric-anthioxidant dispersion components did not significantly affect the consumption of the coagulant used. It has been shown that the introduction of an oil-oligomeric-anthioxidant additive into the elastomeric compositions at the stage of their creation provides an even distribution of the components in the rubber matrix. The effect of manufactured additives on the properties of the resulting composites was estimated. It has been found that vulcanizates obtained on the basis of rubber with a high content of oligomeric component in the composition of the additive have a higher resistance to thermal oxidative aging. Increasing the stability of vulcanizates to the thermal and oxidative effects indicates a decrease in the losses of the antioxidant in the process of obtaining rubbers and elastomeric compositions. It is shown that the introduction of oily oligomerically antioxidant dispersion in latex at the stage of creation of elastomeric compositions makes it possible to improve the technical and economic efficiency and environmental friendliness of their production. Evaluation of the effect of manufactured oligomeric additives on the properties of the resulting composites revealed their multifunctionality.Forcitation:Pugacheva I.N., Nikulina N.S., Nikulin S.S. Rubber materials are extensively utilized for vibration mitigation. Creep is one of the most important physical properties in rubber engineering applications, which may induce failure issues. The purpose of this paper is to provide an engineering approach to evaluate creep performance of rubber systems. Using a combination of hyper-elastic strain energy potential and time-dependent creep damage function, new creep constitutive models were developed. Three different time-decay creep functions were provided and compared. The developed constitutive model was incorporated with finite element analysis by user subroutine and its engineering potential for predicting the creep response of rubber vibration devices was validated. Quasi-static and creep experiments were conducted to verify numerical solutions. The time-dependent, temperature-related, and loading-induced creep behaviors (e.g., stress distribution, creep rate, and creep degree) were explored. Additionally, the time–temperature superposition principle was shown. The present work may enlighten the understanding of the creep mechanism of rubbers and provide a theoretical basis for engineering applications.

This paper contains the results of studies of the structure and composition of the surface layer of the tungsten coating of a rubber substrate. The rubber substrate is prepared on the basis two rubbers: polychloroprene rubber Denka RS‑40A (Bypass 611) with a mass fraction of 0.70; the rest-BNKS‑28 AMN. The deposition of tungsten on the substrate surface was carried out by magnetron sputtering on the installation «ADVAVAC VSM‑200». Microscopic studies of the surface layer of the samples, decoding of X‑ray images and elemental chemical analysis allowed us to determine the structure and phase composition of the surface layer depending on the time of sputtering of tungsten. It is shown that the surface layer of elastomers has a granular structure, which includes cluster formations of tungsten in the atomic state in the form of a β-modification of tungsten (W5) and individual inclusions of atomic elements that are part of the rubber substrate

Configurations of the polymer state in rubbers, such as so-called isotropic (random) and anisotropic (almost aligned) states, are symmetric/asymmetric under space rotations. In this paper, we present numerical data obtained by Monte Carlo simulations of a model for rubber formulations to compare these predictions with the reported experimental stress–strain curves. The model is defined by extending the two-dimensional surface model of Helfrich–Polyakov based on the Finsler geometry description. In the Finsler geometry model, the directional degree of freedom σ → of the polymers and the polymer position r are assumed to be the dynamical variables, and these two variables play an important role in the modeling of rubber elasticity. We find that the simulated stresses τ sim are in good agreement with the reported experimental stresses τ exp for large strains of up to 1200 % . It should be emphasized that the stress–strain curves are directly calculated from the Finsler geometry model Hamiltonian and its partition function, and this technique is in sharp contrast to the standard technique in which affine deformation is assumed. It is also shown that the obtained results are qualitatively consistent with the experimental data as influenced by strain-induced crystallization and the presence of fillers, though the real strain-induced crystallization is a time-dependent phenomenon in general.

Актуальність теми: підвищення рівня якості паперу-основи для рушників та продуктивності технологічного обладнання з виготовлення паперу-основи для рушників на ПрАТ "Київський картонно-паперовий комбінат". Мета і задачі дослідження: розроблення заходів та вирішення ряду задач з метою реконструкції технологічного потоку виробництва паперу-основи для рушників і підвищення якості продукції, що виготовляється. Об’єкт дослідження: технологічний процес виробництва паперу основи для рушників. Предмет дослідження: вихідні волокнисті напівфабрикати, режими роботи обладнання та технологія виготовлення паперу основи для рушників. Методи дослідження: літературний пошук, дослідження технологічних режимів, фізико-механічні методи випробування отриманих зразків в лабораторних умовах фабрики в процесі реконструкції технологічного потоку. Практичне значення одержаних результатів: реконструкція технологічного потоку дає можливість зменшити собівартість і, разом з тим, підвищити якість готової продукції, що виготовляється на ПрАТ Київський картонно-паперовий комбінат. Relevance of the theme: raising the level of quality of the paper-base for towels and productivity of technological equipment for the production of paper-base for towels at PJSC "Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill". Purpose and objectives of the study: development of measures and solving a number of problems with a view to reconstructing the technological flow of production of paper-based for towels and improving the quality of manufactured products. Object of research: technological process of paper production basis Object of research: the technological process of producing paper bases for towels. Subject of research: output fibrous semi-finished products, operating modes of equipment and technology for producing paper bases for towels. Methods of research: literary search, research of technological regimes, physical and mechanical methods of testing the samples obtained in laboratory conditions of the factory in the process of reconstruction of the technological flow. The practical value of the results: the reconstruction of the technological flow makes it possible to reduce the cost and, at the same time, improve the quality of finished products, produced at PrAT Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill Testing the results of the dissertation: the ways of reconstruction of the technological flow of the Private Joint-Stock Company "Kiev Cardboard and Paper Mill" for the production of paper for the basis for towels are proposed. This thesis studies paper and what it is made of and different ways to manufacture it in a laboratory scale. It also contains a comparison of different ways to dry tissue and which method that suits a small laboratory tissue machine best.  A small paper machine was found at Metso in Karlstad that was used as a basis for the concept machine. Since the machine at Karlstad used pressing and a cylinder drying method that involves pressing an alternative method to dry the paper had to be chosen. For drying tissue there are several methods like, infrared and through air drying. A comparison was made between those methods to find out which suited the specification best. The comparison shows that through air drying is the best drying method for the machine.
I detta examensarbete studeras hur man tillverkar papper och olika sätt att tillverka papper i laboratorium skala. Den innehåller också en jämförelse av olika sätt att torka papper och vilken metod som passar bäst till en liten pappersmaskin. En liten pappersmaskin hittades vid Metso i Karlstad. Den användes som grund för vårt förslag till maskin. Eftersom maskinen i Karlstad använde ett pressparti och flera torkcylindrar till att torka arket så behövdes de bytas ut. En jämförelse mellan olika torkmetoder gjordes för att finna en ny lämplig metod för ändamålet. Litteraturstudien visar att det finns flera torkmetoder så som infraröd torkning och genomblåstorkning. En jämförelse gjordes mellan dessa metoder för att ta reda på vilken passade specifikationen bäst. Jämförelsen visar att genomblåstorkning är det bäst lämpade metoden för maskinen.

The work presented in this thesis is concerned with the accurate determination of material parameters and their use in three dimensional numerical simulation of the flow of rubber compounds through complex profile dies. In a first step, results from a study, based on classical rheometry conducted at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, are reviewed together with literature data. In conclusion of a comprehensive literature review, it is found that the existing literature on rubber compound material behaviour does not account for the separation of the different phenomena, i.e. in the most common case, wall slip effects are not separated from the shear behaviour and extensional viscosity is often neglected. The design of a novel in-line rheometer is presented, as classical laboratory rheo­metry is not considered adequate for taking into account the deformation history of the material as it proceeds through the extruder located upstream of the pro­file die. Extensive results gathered with this rheometer are used in an inverse material parameter determination scheme to obtain the parameters for the shear thinning, wall slip and extensional behaviour of the material. Subsequently, the new material parameters are used in the numerical study of a generic profile die especially designed for this purpose in order to display the various flow problems occurring in the real extrusion process. The design and instrumentation of trials on a profile production line at the in­dustrial collaborators site (Cooper Standard Products Ltd., Maesteg) for the aforementioned generic profile die are described. Experimental results for the flow distribution between the various limbs of the profile are compared with simulations. It is concluded, that the inclusion of extensional viscosity effects in the simulation is required, as a preliminary to the use of simulations in a computational optimisation scheme for profile dies.

The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations encourage business to recycle their waste, as an alternative to landfill. This study has evaluated a number of processing techniques with respect to a difficult to recycle, technical textile, in order to develop recycling opportunities. Resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL) coated nylon 66 is a high performance fabric used as an interface to reinforce rubber products such as timing belts. The characteristics of the RFL coated woven fabric, assessed in comparison to equivalent uncoated fabrics, showed increased stiffness and decreased tear resistance. This was followed by the evaluation of three reduction processes:1) The Laroche Cadette shredder;2) The Hollander beater;3) The Intimus disintegrator. The fibre length, coating integrity and degradation properties were assessed for each of the reduction techniques. The longest fibres were produced by the Laroche Cadette shredder, this method proved most suitable for textile processing. The coating was unaffected and little degradation occurred. The Hollander beater produced mid-length fibres; however, fibres as short as 2mm could also be achieved. The material did not degrade, as water used within the process reduced heat build up, the coating remained adhered to the fibre. The Intimus Disintegrator produced the smallest fibre length and produced the greatest processing problem due to heat build up and degradation. Particles in addition to fibres were formed but were not crystalline in nature, and were difficult to process further. Processing using paper, textile, plastic and rubber technology were trialled with varying success. The recommended recycling route was found to be through reduction using the Hollander beater followed by incorporation of the waste as filler in rubber composites. RFL coated fibres gave additional strength to the rubber at high filler contents of 37.5% in comparison to uncoated waste filler also trialled. This was due to the surface chemistry of the RFL coated nylon fibre. The RFL coated nylon 66 filler also enabled the composites to exceed tear specifications required for hardwearing footwear. Fibres were effectively separated by length using forward flow and reverse flow hydrocyclones, separating 10mm and 3mm length fibres, which would prove useful for obtaining optimum particle size for reinforcement during the reduction process. Alternate processed trialled enabled the RFL fibres to be formed into a paper sheet using 50% cellulose pulp but textile processes proved unsuccessful. Moulded pieces formed though compression moulding were able to be produced from coated and uncoated fabric pieces, however many voids were present, limiting the usability.

Formation plays an important role in the end-use properties of paper products, but before formation can be optimized to achieve superior properties, an understanding about the causes of formation must be developed. Formation is caused by variations in the basis weight of paper that are results of fiber floc formation before and during the forming of the sheet. This project is a first step in a larger research program aimed at studying formation. By observing the effects that mechanical energy dissipation (in the form of turbulence) and retention chemical dosage have on floc formation, we may develop a better understanding of how to control formation. In this study, a rectangular cross-section flow channel was constructed to aid in the acquisition of digital images of a flowing fiber suspension. The furnish consisted of a 55:45 spruce:pine bleached market pulp mix from a Western Canadian mill. Turbulence was varied by changing the flow rate; Reynolds numbers achieved range from 20,000 to 40,000. The retention aid used was a cationic polyacrylamide with a medium charge density. Dosage of the retention aid was varied from 0 to 2 pounds per ton OD fiber. Digital images of the flowing fiber suspension were acquired with a professional digital SLR camera with a forensics-quality lens. Three separate image analysis techniques were used to measure the flocculation state of the fiber suspension: morphological image operations, formation number analysis, and fast Fourier transform analysis. Morphological image analysis was capable of measuring floc size increases seen in the acquired floc images. It was shown how floc diameter could increase simultaneously with decreasing total floc area and total floc number. A regression model relating retention aid dosage and energy dissipation was constructed in an effort to predict flocculation. The regression model was used to predict F2 (formation number squared) results from the study. The interaction effect RE was shown to have a differing effect across the retention aid dosage levels. As a result, this model and technique may prove to be a beneficial tool in optimizing retention aid applications.

Food packaging should ensure the safety and quality of food, minimize spoilage and provide an easy way of storing and handling it. Barrier coatings are generally used to meet the demands placed on fibre-based food packages, as these have the ability to regulate the amount of gases that can enter them. Some gases are detrimental to food quality: oxygen, for example, initiates lipid oxidation in fatty foods. Using both experimental data and computer modelling, this thesis explains some aspects of how the structure of barrier coatings influences the mass transport of oxygen with the aim of obtaining essential knowledge that can be used to optimize the performance of barriers. Barrier coatings are produced from polyvinyl alcohol and kaolin blends that are coated onto a polymeric support. The chemical and physical structures of these barriers were characterized according to their influence on permeability in various climates. At a low concentration of kaolin, the crystallinity of polyvinyl alcohol decreased; in the thinner films, the kaolin particles were orientated in the basal plane of the barrier coating. The experimental results indicated a complex interplay between the polymer and the filler with respect to permeability. A computer model for permeability incorporating theories for the filled polymeric layer to include the polymer crystallinity, addition of filler, filler aspect ratio and surrounding moisture was developed. The model shows that mass transport was affected by the aspect ratio of the clay in combination with the clay concentration, as well as the polymer crystallinity. The combined model agreed with the experiments, showing that it is possible to combine different theories into one model that can be used to predict the mass transport. Four barrier coatings: polyethylene, ethylene vinyl alcohol + kaolin, latex + kaolin and starch were evaluated using the parameters of greenhouse gas emissions and product costs. After the production of the barrier material, the coating process and the end-of-life handling scenarios were analysed, it emerged that starch had the lowest environmental impact and latex + kaolin had the highest.

This thesis focuses on the mass transport of oxygen in order to gain deeper knowledge of, and thereby optimise, the performance of barrier coatings. This experimental study, together with computer modelling, characterized the structure of barrier materials with respect to the mass transport process. The performance of the barriers was evaluated based on the parameters of environmental impact and product costs. As the long-term aim is to use non-petroleum-based barrier coatings for packaging, these should be evaluated by assessing the properties of the material in question, its functionality and its environmental impact to provide more insight into which materials are desirable as well as to develop technology. The results from this study indicate that several parameters (the orientation, concentration and aspect ratio of the clay and the polymer crystallinity) influence the properties of a barrier. Using this knowledge, researchers and food packaging engineers can work toward improving and customising renewable barriers.

In this thesis a control algorithm for cross-directional basis weight control based on orthogonal polynomials is presented. Instead of controlling the cross-directional values at each point, the parameters of the orthogonal polynomials are controlled, taking into account the maximum bending moment of the slice lip and the relative stiffness of the slice with respect to the actuators. Problems with slice lip bending are dealt with in two ways. Implicitly, by modelling it as a polynomial such that the slice is not bent more than the highest degree of the polynomial, which is chosen beforehand. Explicitly, by calculating the bending moment and then use quadratic programming to limit the bending moment. By modeling the measurements and the actuators positions by polynomials the mapping between the actuators and the sensors, which is the key element of the current control systems, is effectively eliminated. Computational requirements are greatly reduced by avoiding inverses of big matrices.

However, the adoption of such technology remains a challenge in the rubber industry, as sensitivity perception is required. A solution to this problem can be achieved by making use of robots equipped with additional sensors. Sensitive robotic applications require accurate force/torque data acquisition. The integration of accurate force/torque sensors is unsatisfactory, moreover a novel method for the processing of the measured data is a requisite. In this paper, a concept for the development of a sensitive winding application based on a serial sensitive robot is presented.

AbstractThe paper focuses on the evolution of the planning system in Poland. Its purpose is to show the evolution from short-term planning, subordinated to the requirements of the country’s economic development, to a long-term planning system, integrating various aspects of development—spatial, natural, economic, and social, taking place over the last century. The process described in the paper was largely conditioned by historical events, and the poor economic situation of the country in the post-war period and the changes taking place in the political system. The need for rapid economic development of the country dominated the planning of the interwar period (1920s and 1930s) and post-war period (1950s to 1970s), although the economic, social, and natural conditions were taken into account in 1930s spatial planning. The most complete representation of spatial integration of various planning scopes is visible in the “National Spatial Development Concept 2030,” which was the main subject of the study, as the basic document concerning national spatial planning. The research demonstrates the novelty of this document in relation to previous ones. It is based on the vision of Polish space on, the development of functional areas, determined on the basis of socioeconomic and spatial features treated in a dynamic approach. The need for changes in applicable law that would allow the “National Spatial Development Concept 2030” to be implemented in planning practice is also pointed out. The material presented in the paper may form the basis for comparative studies of planning documents on a national level in various European countries.

The aim of this paper is to compare the means of expression of factual concessive relation in Italian and Russian on the basis of a bidirectional parallel corpus. The study of the expression of purposive interclausal relation revealed that loose coordination prevails in Russian while tighter subordination dominates in Italian (Biagini 2012). However, for the expression of concessive relation, the results do not confirm a predominance of juxtaposition or coordination in Russian when compared with Italian.

This paper is devoted to the theoretical study of rubber-metal friction with particular reference to a lip seal for large high-speed rotor applications. The paper, starting from previously published mathematical models related to friction estimations, presents a semi-analytical mathematical model to estimate friction loss induced by rubber lip seals. The sliding friction model is formulated on the basis of rubber and metal surface properties. Viscoelastic and hysteretic properties of the rubber are considered as function of temperature and excitation frequency. The metal surface profile is modelled as a superimposition of base ideal peak profiles. Finally, the friction coefficient is modelled as a function of temperature, frequency and contact pressure. A preliminary validation of the model is achieved by comparing the estimated friction torque provided by the model with the friction torque measured on an actual rotor-stator system at different operating temperatures.

This paper described the results of the static loading tests using a half-scale thick rubber bearing to investigate the fundamental characteristics such as horizontal and vertical restoring force of a rubber bearing applied to a Sodium-cooled-Fast-Reactor (SFR). Since the SFR has thin-walled component structures, a seismic isolation system is employed to mitigate the seismic force. A rubber bearing with thick rubber layers is used for the seismic isolation system applied to the SFR, it was developed aiming for isolation of not only horizontal response acceleration, but also vertical response acceleration. The thick rubber bearing of 1600 mm in diameter full-scale was designed to provide about a 10000 kN rated load with a horizontal natural period of 3.4 s and a vertical one of 0.125 s. Moreover, a linear strain limit of the thick rubber bearing was designed to accept a horizontal displacement of 700 mm or more in order to ensure a double safety margin for response displacements against a design basis ground motion. The static loading tests were performed using a half-scale thick rubber bearing with a diameter of 800 mm to investigate the horizontal/vertical stiffness, damping ratio, a linear strain limit in horizontal direction and a tensile yield stress in the vertical direction. The fundamental characteristic of rubber bearings employed to the SFR and the validity of a design formula became clear through the static loading tests.

Abstract This paper proposes a systematic method for the evaluation of power loss of rubber V-belt continuously variable transmissions (CVT). By observing the interaction between belt and sheaves, the entire belt may be divided into four regions. They are free span, wedging-in, adhesion, and wedging-out regions. Therefore, each region possesses a distinct motion characteristic. Herein, power loss is categorized into speed and torque losses. Since speed loss contributes less than 4% of the total power loss in most operating conditions, only torque loss is considered. The mechanisms causing torque loss may be attributed to the hysteresis of belt bending, compression and shear, and friction due to radial motion of the belt. These loss mechanisms are studied on the basis of motion characteristics in each region. Parameters for loss mechanisms are then analyzed to identify their contributions to the system efficiency. These parameters include external load, rotating speed and wedge angle of the pulley, speed ratio, pre-tension, and thickness and tooth profile of the belt. In addition, an experimental study is performed for verification of the proposed analytical approach.

This paper is a part of the series “Development of an Evaluation Method for Seismic Isolation Systems of Nuclear Power Facilities.” This part presents a break test plan and development of a test machine for a full-scale lead rubber bearing (LRB). Application of seismic base-isolation systems using LRBs of 1600 mm in diameter to reactor building has been considered for the purpose of enhancing seismic safety. It is important to obtain the ultimate properties of isolators in order to estimate the seismic safety margin of seismic base-isolated structures against a beyond design-basis earthquake events. Recent studies reveal that the scaled effect appears on the ultimate properties of seismic rubber bearings. However, because of the limitation of the loading capabilities of loading machines, the ultimate property of such a large scale LRBs has not been confirmed. In this study, the break tests for LRBs of 1600 mm in diameter is planned on the basis of estimation that refers to previous studies on break tests for small-scale LRBs and natural rubber bearings. The world-largest class test machine is designed and constructed to conduct static break tests for the full-scale LRBs. Furthermore, the performance of the test machine is evaluated from test results including those for break tests.

Abstract The authors have been developing the three-dimensional isolation system for a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor, and reported the details of characteristics of disc springs and vertical oil dampers on the basis of full-scale loading tests [1]. To clarify the fundamental characteristics of the three-dimensional isolation system, the loading tests using a half-scale assembled specimen have been planned, which is composed of a rubber bearing, disc spring units, the horizontal supporting functions, the smoothly sliding elements, and the rotate restraint elements. This paper describes each characteristic of the rubber bearings, disc springs and sliding element before assembling a half-scale specimen of the three-dimensional seismic isolation system by the static or dynamic loading. The applicability of design method, the scaling effect in disc springs, and the dependence on the friction coefficient of the sliding elements were investigated and confirmed. Additionally, the method of minimizing the variation of force-displacement relationships between four disc spring units, each of which has the three disc springs stacked in parallel and six disc springs stacked in series, was studied. It should be noted that this paper is in series from Part 2 [1] held on 2018PVP.

In this paper, the influence of temperature change on the high frequency vibration transmission characteristics of the primary hydraulic damper of bogie is analyzed through the laboratory test of the dynamic stiffness characteristics of the primary hydraulic damper at different temperatures and the simulation prediction of the high frequency vibration transmission characteristics. The results show that with the temperature decreasing, the peak frequency of the overall frequency response function of the damper obviously shifts to the high frequency, but the peak value of the frequency response function gradually decreases above -10℃ and increases below- 10℃. Since the damper contains both oil and rubber, the test results are influenced by the temperature change characteristics of rubber and oil. Based on the above test results, with the decrease of temperature, the dynamic stiffness of rubber joint and oil increases gradually; before -10℃, rubber joint is the dominant factor of temperature change characteristics of damper; after -10℃, the structural characteristics of oil inside damper are the dominant factor of temperature change characteristics of damper. This study provides reference and basis for the design of vibration reduction and noise reduction of high-speed train bogies under the condition of large temperature difference.

Base-Isolation system using laminated rubber bearings is considered to be an efficient technology of providing a mitigation of seismic damage for structures and equipments, and has proven to be reliable and cost-effective. There are many structures in various countries, which concern not only new constructions but also existing structures, especially after the Loma Prieta (1989), Northridge (1994) and Kobe (1995) earthquakes. Since seismic response of base-isolated structures greatly depends on the mechanical properties of the bearings, deep understanding of the characteristics of the bearings under the conditions of interest is essential toward a rational design of the base-isolation. Considering that the base isolation system in the two horizontal directions has already been used in the bridges and buildings, behaviors of the bearings under the multi-axial loading should be studied experimentally. In the actual design of multi-axial base-isolated structures, bilinear models have often been used independently in the two horizontal directions, and the coupling effects of hysteretic loops are not considered (AASHATO 1999; JRA 1998). Mokha et al. (1990) investigated the behaviors of Teflon friction bearings under tri-axial loading, and proposed a model for this type of bearings (Constantinou et al. 1990; Mokha et al. 1993). Multi-axial behaviors of a HDR and a steel damper have been investigated by Yasaka et al. (1988), and they empirically developed a multi-spring model, in which several bilinear springs or Ramberg-Osgood springs are circularly arranged with regular angle intervals. Huang et al. (2000) investigated the characteristics of tri-axial behaviors of a LRB and proposed a multi-axial model by considering a circular force interaction function of the bilinear model. However, systematic studies have not been conducted on the experimental investigation of several types of laminated rubber bearings. In addition, previously proposed models for laminated rubber bearings do not have definite theoretical backgrounds in the extension into multi-axial case, and they also do not consider the hardening behaviors in the large deformation range. In this paper, multi-axial restoring forces of various types of laminated rubber bearings, which have widely been used in the base-isolated bridges, are investigated experimentally. Then, a one-dimensional and two-dimensional models of the bearings are proposed on the basis of the experimental results.

This paper describes that the analytical model for the three-dimensional isolation system [1], which consists of thick rubber bearings, disc springs and oil dampers, is created through loading tests. The new-type analytical models of each element are proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of the seismic response analysis. The concept of the three-dimensional isolation system has been proposed to ensure the structural integrity for large reactor vessels. The primary specifications of the three-dimensional isolation system are a horizontal natural period of 3.4 s and a vertical natural period of 0.33 s. The investigations of horizontal isolation performances have been conducted for the various types of isolation devices, beginning with rubber bearings, whereas the previous studies focused on the vertical isolation performances are only a few. Hence, isolation characteristics, such as restoring force and damping force, should be clarified by loading tests using vertical seismic isolation elements, and analytical model to assess the seismic response should be identified on the basis of the loading test results. This paper presents a new analytical model with providing of the differential equations to improve the prediction accuracy and demonstrates the seismic performance, including beyond-design-basis ground motion, for the three-dimensional isolation system by the seismic response analysis.

This paper provides a part of the series “Development of an Evaluation Method for Seismic Isolation Systems of Nuclear Power Facilities.” This part shows the fundamental properties of full-scale lead rubber bearings with 1600 mm diameter based on break tests. The following results are mainly obtained. One: The deformations and the acting loads of the full-scale specimens were accurately obtained up to break by the measurement system for the break tests. Two: The fundamental properties for the full-scale lead rubber bearings with a large-diameter lead plug were obtained by the basic property tests. The load-displacement relations were stable and similar basic properties were obtained among the specimens. Three: The result of shear break tests showed that the hardening property of the specimens had a certain harmony with the hardening stiffness model which was used in the seismic response analysis to investigate the safety margin for severe earthquakes beyond design basis earthquakes of nuclear power facilities. The effect of axial pressure on hardening property was not specifically observed. The evaluated linear strain limit was larger than 250% for every specimen. Four: The softening property of the specimens was obtained from the tensile break tests. The axial stress of tensile yield was approx. 1.4 MPa and the axial stress did not show any negative gradient at least up to approx. 10% axial strain after the tensile yield even with offset shear strains. Five: The tensile force acting on the bolts which secure the specimen to the testing machine was lower than the estimated tensile force at shear break, which indicates tensile force was conservatively calculated to maintain safety in the design for foundation of lead rubber bearings.

This paper describes a new type of hysteresis model applied for seismic response analysis, which provides restoring force characteristics containing various types of hysteresis loops generated by calculating differential equations, based on static breaking tests regarding thick rubber bearings. In order to reduce residual risk, there is increasing necessity to accurately predict seismic response against both design-basis ground motion and ground motion exceeding design-basis. This process of seismic response prediction is called seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA). In general, a restoring force of rubber bearing under large deformation due to a major earthquake has strong non-linear characteristics containing the hysteresis loops. To improve the accuracy of seismic response predictions up to the ultimate behavior in PRA, a new hysteresis model to be applicable up to the breaking point in horizontal and vertical directions is proposed by the authors. The features of the proposed hysteresis model are as follows: (1) The hysteresis characteristics obtained by the proposed model have smooth curves as substantive hysteresis loops measured in breaking tests. (2) The various types of hysteresis characteristics can be captured efficiently as initial value problems since the proposed model, consisting of differential equations, directly allows the skeleton function, and unaffected by hysteresis law such as Masing law. This paper indicates applicability of the proposed hysteresis model to seismic response analysis through comparison of results of the static breaking test with results of analytical, and also describes the breaking mode obtained by the seismic response analysis.

This study was carried out to understand the underlying dynamics of agricultural commercialisation in Malawi, especially among smallholder farmers. Despite various concerted efforts to accelerate agricultural growth and transformation, the progress among smallholder farmers has been less satisfactory. Most of the smallholder farmers do not engage with markets on a consistent and sustainable basis. Consequently, the aim of this paper was to demonstrate that there is no one ideal type of agricultural commercialisation that can be realised through investment and policy intervention.

It was not uncommon in Brazil for slaves to own slaves. Slaves as masters of slaves existed in many slave societies and societies with slaves, but considering modern, chattel slavery in the Americas, Brazil seems to have been a special case where this phenomenon thrived, especially in nineteenth-century urban Bahia. The investigation is based on more than five hundred cases of enslaved slaveowners registered in ecclesiastical and manumission records in the provincial capital city of Salvador. The paper discusses the positive legal basis and common law rights that made possible this peculiar form of slave ownership. The paper relates slave ownership by slaves with the direction and volume of the slave trade, the specific contours of urban slavery, access by slaves to slave trade networks, and slave/master relations. It also discusses the web of convivial relations that involved the slaves of slaves, focusing on the ethnic and gender profiles of the enslaved master and their slaves.

This article is dedicated to the Earth Remote Sensing (ERS), which the authors believe is a great way to teach geography and allows forming an idea of the actual geographic features and phenomena. One of the major problems that now constrains the active introduction of remote sensing data in the educational process is the low availability of training aerospace pictures, which meet didactic requirements. The article analyzes the main sources of ERS as a basis for educational resources formation with aerospace images: paper, various individual sources (personal stations receiving satellite information, drones, balloons, kites and balls) and Internet sources (mainstream sites, sites of scientific-technical organizations and distributors, interactive Internet geoservices, cloud platforms of geospatial analysis). The authors point out that their geospatial analysis platforms (Google Earth Engine, Land Viewer, EOS Platform, etc.), due to their unique features, are the basis for the creation of information thematic databases of ERS. The article presents an example of such a database, covering more than 800 aerospace images and dynamic models, which are combined according to such didactic principles as high information load and clarity.

This paper shows the theoretical basis for the creation of convolutional neural networks for image classification and their application in practice. To achieve the goal, the main types of neural networks were considered, starting from the structure of a simple neuron to the convolutional multilayer network necessary for the solution of this problem. It shows the stages of the structure of training data, the training cycle of the network, as well as calculations of errors in recognition at the stage of training and verification. At the end of the work the results of network training, calculation of recognition error and training accuracy are presented.

Verification will be of critical importance to achieving and maintaining a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction (ME WMD). Effective verification arrangements would serve a vital national security objective for each state in the region by reducing tensions, removing the motivation to proliferate, and mitigating the risk of a virtual nuclear arms race (or war). In view of the high levels of tension and mistrust within the zone, ensuring effective verification will be especially demanding. The paper examines specific elements of the future nuclear verification of the zone, including: Which states should be included? What prohibitions and obligations should apply in the zone and how would they be verified? How could elimination of nuclear weapons in the zone be achieved? On what basis would the zone treaty enter into force? The paper also examines a number of existing treaties and arrangements as well as the lessons learned from past verification cases which regional states can draw on in developing verification for a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone.

The paper traces the development from the medieval, traditional union, through the modern disunion, toward a possible post-modern reunion of the sacred and the profane. It concentrates on the modern disunion and conflict between the religious and the secular, revelation and enlightenment, faith and autonomous reason in the Western world and beyond. It deals specifically with Christianity and the modern age, particularly liberalism, socialism and fascism of the 2Oth and the 21st centuries. The problematic inclination of Western Catholicism toward fascism, motivated by the fear of and hate against socialism and communism in the 20th century, and toward exclusive, authoritarian, and totalitarian populism and identitarianism in the 21st. century, is analyzed, compared and critiqued. Solutions to the problem are suggested on the basis of the Critical Theory of Religion and Society, derived from the Critical Theory of Society of the Frankfurt School. The critical theory and praxis should help to reconcile the culture wars which are continually produced by the modern antagonism between the religious and the secular, and to prepare the way toward post-modern, alternative Future III - the freedom of All on the basis of the collective appropriation of collective surplus value. Distribution and recognition problems are equally taken seriously.
