This article discusses independent oil and gas operations on jointly held properties, and in particular considers the application of Article X of the Operating Procedures of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen. It explores the rights and obligations of both the party proposing the independent operation and the non-participating party. Recent judicial consideration of some aspects of the operating procedures is discussed. The article suggests some specific changes parties may wish to incorporate when adapting the operating procedure to their circumstances.

Abstract. Thermal stress on sows in modern farrowing operations has become a significant issue for the commercial pork industry. Purdue University researchers have developed a simple conductive hog cooling pad that has the potential to effectively alleviate a significant portion of that heat stress. The heat transfer properties of the cooling pad are crucial to the characterization of the pad and the success of the pad in the field. This article presents data collected showing the thermal profile of the cooling pad, the energy transfer of the pad in operation, and the effectiveness of the pad as a function of the amount of coolant used to affect heat transfer from a simulated animal to the coolant. A variety of operating conditions and coolant flows were investigated, and those results are detailed in this article. Intermittent coolant flow over modest time intervals appeared to provide the best results with the cooling pad under the investigated operating conditions. Abstract The aim of this work was to study the microstructure and functional properties of CuNi2Si1 alloy. The material was prepared classically by melting, casting, hot rolling and cold rolling. The obtained strips were processed with combined operations of supersaturation, ageing and one of the intensive deformation method - repetitive corrugation and straightening. The efficiency of RCS operation in shaping of functional properties in precipitation hardened copper alloys depends not only on tool geometry and operating parameters but also on whether and at what stage of strip production the supersaturation operation was applied. Application of the supersaturation before RCS operation broadens the potential to shape the set of functional properties. Comparable functional properties of the precipitation hardened copper alloy strips can be reached without application of the supersaturation operation in their manufacturing processes. The process of RCS applied after annealing, and the potentially slightly lower mechanical properties would be compensated by higher electrical conductivity.

This paper shows Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified hospitality properties exhibit increased expenses and earn lower net operating income (NOI) than non-certified buildings. ENERGY STAR certified properties demonstrate lower overall expenses than non-certified buildings with statistically neutral NOI effects. Using a custom sample of all green buildings and their competitive data set as of 2013 provided by Smith Travel Research (STR), the paper documents potential reasons for this result including increased operational expenses, potential confusion with certified and registered LEED projects in the data, and qualitative input. The qualitative input comes from a small sample survey of five industry professionals. The paper provides one of the only analyses on operating efficiencies with LEED and ENERGY STAR hospitality properties.

When studying detection systems, parameters associated with the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve are often estimated to assess system performance. In some applied settings it is often not possible to test the detection system with large numbers of stimuli. The resulting small sample statistics many have undesirable properties. The characteristics of these small sample ROC estimators were examined in a Monte Carlo simulation. Three popular ROC parameters were chosen for study. One of the parameters was a single parameter index of system performance, Area under the ROC curve. The other parameters, ROC intercept and slope, were considered as a pair. ROC intercept and slope were varied along with sample size and points on the certainty rating scale to form a four way factorial design. Several types of estimators were examined. For the parameter, Area under the curve, Maximum Likelihood (ML), three types of Least Squares (LS), and Distribution Free (DF) estimators were considered. Except for the DF estimator, the same estimators were considered for the parameters, intercept and slope. These estimators were compared with respect to three characteristics: bias, efficiency, and consistency. For Area under the curve, the ML estimator was the least biased. The DF estimator was the most efficient, and all the estimators except the DF estimator appeared to be consistent. For intercept and slope the LS estimator that minimized vertical error of the points from the ROC curve (line) was the least biased for both estimators. This LS estimator was also the most efficient. This estimator along with the ML estimator also appeared to be the most consistent. The other two estimators had no significant trend toward consistency. These results along with other findings, illustrate that different estimators may be "best" for different sample sizes and for different parameters. Therefore, researchers should carefully consider the characteristics of ROC estimators before using them as indices of system performance.

The influences of operating pressure, temperature and gas velocity on electrostatics in a fluidized bed of glass beads and different grades of polyethylene resin were investigated in a fluidization column of 150 mm inner diameter and 2.0 m height. Eight collision probes at different levels and radial positions measured the electrostatics in the bed. The electrostatics increased as pressure increased, probably due to an increase in bubble rise velocity, frequency and volume fraction. As the pressure increased, particle-particle and particle-wall collisions near the distributor and wall contributed heavily to charge generation. Temperature also played a role. At higher temperatures (up to 90°C), the polarity of net cumulative charge in the bed reversed. As the superficial gas velocity increased, the electrostatics increased. However, at higher gas velocities, the polarity in the freeboard was opposite to that in the bed, indicating that fines entrained from the column carried charges, resulting in a net charge of opposite polarity to that inside the bed. For Geldart group B particles the degree of electrification in the bed slightly increased with decreasing particle size. Charging for group A particles was significantly greater than for group B particles. For binary mixtures of group A and B particles the electrostatics increased as the proportion of small particles increased. As the relative humidity (RH) of fluidizing air increased, the electrostatics decreased. For the RH range (5-30%) explored, the sensitivity of the charging to RH varied significantly depending on the location of the probes. As the proportion of fine glass beads (<30 µm) increased to 2.0 wt% in a fluidized bed of large glass beads (574 µm), the electrostatics in the bed decreased, likely because the fines acted as spacers between larger particles. The electrostatics decreased as the proportion of an antistatic agent (Larostat) increased from 0.0 to 0.5 wt%, because Larostat tends to adsorb moisture and attach to the surface of the glass beads, consequently enhancing their surface conductivity. However, the degree of electrification increased when the wt% of Larostat exceeded 1.0%, likely due to the tendency of Larostat particles to adsorb water and to agglomerate.

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are widely used in medical decision making. It was recognized in the last decade that only a specific region of the ROC curve is of clinical interest, which can be summarized by the partial area under the ROC curve (partial AUC). Early statistical methods for evaluating partial AUC assume that the data are from a specified underlying distribution. Nonparametric estimators of the partial AUC emerged recently, but there are theoretical issues to be addressed. In this dissertation, we propose two new nonparametric statistics, partially integrated ROC and partially integrated weighted ROC, for estimating partial AUC. We show that our partially integrated ROC statistic is a consistent estimator of the partial AUC, and derive its asymptotic distribution which is distribution free under the null hypothesis. In the partially integrated ROC statistic, when the ROC curve crosses the Uniform distribution function (CDF) and if the partial area evaluated contains the crossing point, or when there are multiple crossing, the partially integrated ROC statistic might not perform well. To address this issue, we propose the partially integrated weighted ROC statistic. This statistic evaluates the partially weighted AUC, where larger weight is given when the ROC curve is above the Uniform CDF and smaller weight is given when the ROC curve is below the Uniform CDF. We show that our partially integrated weighted ROC statistic is a consistent estimator of the partially weighted AUC. We derive its asymptotic distribution which is distribution free under the null hypothesis. We propose to apply our two nonparametric statistics to functional category analysis in microarray experiments. We define the functional category analysis to be the statistical identification of over-represented functional gene categories in a microarray experiment based on differential gene expression. We compare our statistics with existing methods for the functional category analysis both via simulation study and application to a real microarray data, and demonstrate that our two statistics are effective for identifying over-represented functional gene categories. We also emphasize the essential role of the empirical distribution function plots and the ROC curves in the functional category analysis.

The effects of superfical gas velocity, pressure, and temperature on entrainment and electrostatic charge with glass beads and polyethylene as bed particles were investigated in a fluidization column of 0.15 m inner diameter and 2.0 m height. Four collision probes at different levels, a freeboard sampler, and a current detection pipe measured the electrostatics in the bed, freeboard, and column exit. The entrainment and electrostatic charge inside the bed and freeboard region increased as the superficial gas velocity or pressure increased. Temperature had negligible effect on the entrainment over the limited range studied. However, electrostatic charges decreased and the charge polarity reversed as the bed temperature increased from 20 to 75 °C. The calculated electrostatic forces resulting from fine-fine and fine-coarse particle interactions are comparable to the gravitational force on fine particles in the fluidized bed. Entrainment empirical correlations developed in this work showed much better performance after the effect of electrostatic forces was taken into account, with the entrainment flux deceasing as electrostatic forces increase. The Choi et al. (1999) entrainment correlation shows better prediction of the entrainment flux in our system after the effect of the electrostatic force is considered. The electrostatic charges in the bed decreased with increasing air relative humidity. The charge density of fines decreased and entrainment increased as the air relative humidity increased. The relative humdity had no effect on the charge density or entrainment of polyethylene particles, which can also probably be attributed to the hydrophobic nature of polyethylene. The magnitude of electrostatic charges generated inside the fluidized bed increased slightly as the size of the coarse particles decreased. The entrainment decreased as the coarse particle size decreased. The electrostatic charges increased and entrainment decreased as the coarse particle density increased. The magnitude of electrostatic charges generated inside the fluidized bed increased and entrainment decreased as the fine particle density increased. The electrostatic charges and entrainment also increased as the fine concentration increased. The fines concentration had little or no effect on fines charge densities. Bipolar charging was observed in all experiments with fine particles charged positively, whereas large particles were charged negatively.

Expanded bed adsorption (EBA) combines clarification, concentration and purification into a single processing step reducing processing time and increasing productivity. Much work has been conducted on model proteins but little attention has been paid to the emerging issues of tailoring the operational variables of matrix size, operating flowrate and ligand type so as to maximise process outputs. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of matrix properties and operating parameters on breakthrough behaviour and productivity. Second generation matrices designed to operate at high flowrates were also examined. Operating at low velocities, beds formed from smaller particles had a shallower breakthrough than beds formed from large particles but the latter were more productive. At the higher velocities typically utilised in EBA, the behaviour of beds formed from either small or large particles was comparable in terms of breakthrough with the beds made up of small particles being slightly more productive than those containing large particles. A prototype 2nd generation EBA matrix consisting of a multi-modal ligand that could operate at high conductivity levels typical of fermentation broths was also examined. It was found that the productivity could be increased 5-fold as compared with commercially available matrices, with no loss of yield or purity. Conventional breakthrough curve analysis is not applicable in situations of variable particle size and operating velocity. Results using a novel dimensionless group to facilitate comparison between unlike systems is presented. The thesis presents an analysis of the relative productivity of a range of systems and highlights the gains in terms of productivity to be achieved with the development of 2nd generation EBA multi-modal adsorbents. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the commercial and regulatory aspects of EBA.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have become an indispensable technology as the temperature of turbine inlet gas has increased. TBCs reduce the temperature of the base metal, but a reduction of internal pores by sintering occurs when using TBCs, and so the thermal barrier performance of TBCs is deteriorated. This in turn increases the temperature of the base metal and could shorten its lifespan. The authors have already clarified by laboratory acceleration tests that the deterioration of the thermal barrier performance of TBCs is caused by a decrease in the non-contact area that exists inside TBCs [1]. This non-contact area is a slit space that exists between thin layers and is formed when TBCs are coated. This paper examines the relations between the decrease of the non-contact area and the exposure conditions, by measuring the thermal conductivity and the porosity of TBCs exposed to the temperatures that exist in an actual gas turbine, and derives the correlation with exposure conditions. As a result, very high correlations were found between the thermal conductivity and exposure conditions of TBCs, and between the porosity and exposure conditions. A very high correlation was also found between the thermal conductivity and porosity of TBCs. In addition, techniques for predicting TBC operating temperature were examined by using these three correlations. The correlation of diameter and exposure conditions of the gamma prime phase, which exists in nickel base super alloys, is used as a general method for predicting the temperature of parts in hot gas paths [2]. This paper proposes two kinds of operating temperature prediction methods, which are similar to this general method. The first predicts the operating temperature from thermal conductivity measurements of TBCs before and after use, and the second predicts the operating temperature from thermal conductivity measurements of TBCs after use and porosity measurements before use. The TBC operating temperatures of a combustor that had been used for 12,000 hours with an actual E-class gas turbine were predicted by these two methods. The advantage of these methods is that the temperature of all parts with TBC can be predicted.

Rheology studies the flow of matter and is one of the most important methods for materials characterization because flow behavior is responsive to properties such as molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Rheological properties help practitioners understand fluid flow and how to improve manufacturing processes. Rheometers have been extensively used to determine the viscosity and rheological properties of different materials because the measurements are quick, accurate, and reliable. In this standard operating procedure, a general protocol using a rotational rheometer is developed for characterizing rheological properties of nanomaterials. Procedures and recommendations for sample preparation, instrument preparation, sample measurements, and results analysis are included. The procedure was tested on a variety of carbon-based nanomaterials.

The primary information for accurately predicting water and solute movement and their impact on water quality is the characterization of soil hydraulic properties. This project was designed to develop methods for rapid and reliable estimates of unsaturated hydraulic properties of the soil. Particularly, in situ methodology is put forth, based on subsurface point sources. Devices were designed to allow introduction of water in subsurface settings at constant negative heads. The ability to operate at a negative head allows a direct method of finding unsaturated soil properties and a mechanism for eliminating extremely rapid preferential flow from the slow matrix flow. The project included field, laboratory and modeling components. By coupling the measurements and the modeling together, a wider range of designs can be examined, while at the same time realistic performance is assured. The developed methodology greatly expands the possibilities for evaluating hydraulic properties in place, especially for measurements in undisturbed soil within plant rooting zones. The objectives of the project were (i) To develop methods for obtaining rapid and reliable estimates of unsaturated hydraulic properties in situ, based on water distribution from subsurface point sources. These can be operated with a constant flow or at a constant head; (ii) To develop methods for distinguishing between matrix and preferential flow using cavities/permeameters under tension; (iii) To evaluate auxiliary measurements such as soil water content or tensions near the operating cavities to improve reliability of results; and (iv: To develop numerical and analytical models for obtaining soil hydraulic properties based on measurements from buried-cavity sources and the auxiliary measurements. The project began in July 1995 and was terminated in November 1998. All of the objectives were pursued. Three new subsurface point sources were designed and tested and two old types were also used. Two of the three new designs used a nylon cloth membrane (30 mm) arranged in a cylindrical geometry and operating at a negative water pressure (tension). A separate bladder arrangement allowed inflation under a positive pressure to maintain contact between the membrane and the soil cavity. The third new design used porous stainless steel (0.5 and 5 mm) arranged in six segments, each with its own water inlet, assembled to form a cylindrical supply surface when inflated in a borehole. The "old" types included an "off-the-shelf" porous cup as well as measurements from a subsurface drip emitter in a small subsurface cavity. Reasonable measurements were made with all systems. Sustained use of the cloth membrane devices were difficult because of leaks and plugging problems. All of the devices require careful consideration to assure contact with the soil system. Steady flow was established which simplified the analysis (except for the drip emitter which used a transient analysis).

The U.S. Army is increasingly interested in autonomous vehicle operations, including off-road autonomous ground maneuver. Unlike on-road, off-road terrain can vary drastically, especially with the effects of seasonality. As such, vehicles operating in off-road environments need to be in-formed about the changing terrain prior to departure or en route for successful maneuver to the mission end point. The purpose of this report is to assess machine learning algorithms used on various remotely sensed datasets to see which combinations are useful for identifying different terrain. The study collected data from several types of winter conditions by using both active and passive, satellite and vehicle-based sensor platforms and both supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms. To classify specific terrain types, supervised algorithms must be used in tandem with large training datasets, which are time consuming to create. However, unsupervised segmentation algorithms can be used to help label the training data. More work is required gathering training data to include a wider variety of terrain types. While classification is a good first step, more detailed information about the terrain properties will be needed for off-road autonomy.

As the State of California continues to grow, demand for enhanced infrastructure such as roadways and highways escalates. In view of the current average highway lifespan of 15–20 years, the improvement of asphalt binders leads to material sustainability by decreasing required maintenance and increasing the lifespan of roadways. In the present investigation, enhancement of asphalt binder properties was achieved by different methods of mixing varying compositions of graphene nanoparticles with an SBS polymer and asphalt binder. Additionally, experimental evaluation and comparison of the rheological and mechanical properties of each specimen is presented. Graphene nanoparticles have attracted great curiosity in the field of highway materials due to their incredible rigidity, even in small quantities. Addition of as little as 1.0%nanoparticles in combination with polymers in an asphalt binder is expected to increase the rigidity of the material while also maintaining the beneficial polymer characteristics. Evaluation of the effect of the mixing design established that the methods for application of graphene to the polymer-modified asphalt binder are critical in the improvement of a roadway, resulting in resistance to premature aging and strain from constant road operation.
