During any synchromesh development programme, reliable methods for evaluating and assessing the gear-shift quality are necessary. In order to overcome the reliance on a trained driver and associated subjective judgement, methods have been investigated to describe the gear-shift characteristics using objective, rather than subjective measures This paper describes the measurement and calculation of objective measures that relate to perceived shift quality. Examples are given on the use of these measures to evaluate the effect of production variability on shift quality, and to allow comparisons of shift quality to be made between competitive vehicles

The article consists of an introduction, method of investigation, discussion on text and discourse and determination of metaphorezation, description of metaphors, place of metaphorization in literary and linguistic study, text and discourse relations, study of metaphorezation, of a conclusion and reference, each of which has found its scientific and empiric substantiation.In the introduction the significance of the investigation from the view of comparative-contrastive method is noted, the study of the text theory and discourse, investigation of different linguistic elements used in the texts and discourses in different (English and Azerbaijani) languages are put forth as the aim of the investigation. In the introduction concise information on the study of discourse and text problems is given.In the part, dealing with method of investigation it is spoken of the usage of typological comparative-contrastive-descriptive method of investigation which is determined as the method of investigation.In the part of the article dealing with Discussion on text and Discourse and Determination of Metaphorization, different types of discourses, the role of metaphorization in these discourses and texts are touched upon. In this part discussion of theoretical concepts on metaphor and metaphorization find their reflections.In the part, speaking of the place of Metaphorization in literary and linguistic study it is pointed out that metaphorization is mainly a literary mechanism and for this reason its manifestation in literature is considered, the theory of metaphorezation is discussed.The subtitle, dealing with Text and Discourse Relations, Study of Metaphoriration, touches upon the determination of relations between text and discourse, their roles in speech and narrations, their mutual influence on each other, on the metaphorization and its functions, discussion on the theoretical view points of the scholars on these problems, manifestation of metaphors in literary texts and discourses. The problem of counteraction to investigation has recently gained particular topicality. . This is due to the fact that the activities of organized criminality are gaining and larger range, an essential reason of which, in its turn, are the processes of the personnel corruptibility of the power structures and law enforcement institutions.The basis of the people’s lifestyle of the adherent to the criminal environment is to put obstacles in the way of law enforcement institutions in general; and during their lifetime, because of specific mentality, criminals always and willingly put into practice various forms and methods of counteractions. As investigative practice shows, counteraction to investigation may go on during the lifetime of the counteraction performer; it may begin also in the preparation phase of a crime, or may begin or continue during investigation, trial, and even during the time of serving sentence.The purpose of this study is to clarify the essence of the counteraction concept to investigation.As a result of the study and based on the theoretical knowledge, the most important conclusion has been drawn, namely: the counteraction to investigation is an action or inaction executed on premeditated purpose to hinder or even to stop the full, objective and comprehensive clarification of the offense circumstances by the investigating authorities and courts. In the course of the study, the problems were also identified, and the means and methods of overcoming the counteraction to investigation were offered.The prevention of counteraction to investigations, identification of its motives, forecasting of counteraction forms and methods of its implementation both – at the initial period of the investigation and during the implementation of investigation activities are a part of the necessary provisions for successful neutralization of counteraction, for unmasking of counteraction performers’ activities. It is also a compulsory provision for objective, detailed and complete clarifications of all circumstances of offence, providing in this way a fair punishment for guilty persons.The application of countermeasures requires an understanding of the methods and techniques used by law enforcement authorities in investigation of criminal networks. Insufficient prevention and overcoming of counteractions to investigations is one of the reasons of qualitative and quantitative aggravation of the performance parameters of law enforcement authorities.

In this thesis, we investigate and develop a number of online learning selection choice function based hyper-heuristic methodologies that attempt to solve multi-objective unconstrained optimisation problems. For the first time, we introduce an online learning selection choice function based hyperheuristic framework for multi-objective optimisation. Our multi-objective hyper-heuristic controls and combines the strengths of three well-known multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (NSGAII, SPEA2, and MOGA), which are utilised as the low level heuristics. A choice function selection heuristic acts as a high level strategy which adaptively ranks the performance of those low-level heuristics according to feedback received during the search process, deciding which one to call at each decision point. Four performance measurements are integrated into a ranking scheme which acts as a feedback learning mechanism to provide knowledge of the problem domain to the high level strategy. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, this thesis investigates the influence of the move acceptance component of selection hyper-heuristics for multi-objective optimisation. Three multi-objective choice function based hyper-heuristics, combined with different move acceptance strategies including All-Moves as a deterministic move acceptance and the Great Deluge Algorithm (GDA) and Late Acceptance (LA) as a nondeterministic move acceptance function. GDA and LA require a change in the value of a single objective at each step and so a well-known hypervolume metric, referred to as D metric, is proposed for their applicability to the multi-objective optimisation problems. D metric is used as a way of comparing two non-dominated sets with respect to the objective space. The performance of the proposed multi-objective selection choice function based hyper-heuristics is evaluated on the Walking Fish Group (WFG) test suite which is a common benchmark for multi-objective optimisation. Additionally, the proposed approaches are applied to the vehicle crashworthiness design problem, in order to test its effectiveness on a realworld multi-objective problem. The results of both benchmark test problems demonstrate the capability and potential of the multi-objective hyper-heuristic approaches in solving continuous multi-objective optimisation problems. The multi-objective choice function Great Deluge Hyper-Heuristic (HHMO_CF_GDA) turns out to be the best choice for solving these types of problems.

The objective of this research is to develop a flexible design grammar and genetic algorithm representation to be used in a multi-objective optimization method to design efficient steel roof trusses given space dimensions and loading requirements by the user. The goal of implementing the method as a multi-objective problem is to obtain a set of near-optimal trusses for the defined unstructured problem domain, not just a single near-optimal design. The method developed was required to support the exploration of a broad range of conceptual designs before making design decisions. Therefore, a method was developed that could define numerous design variables, support techniques to locate global or near-global optimal designs, and improve the efficiency of the computational procedures implemented. This research effort was motivated by the need to consider structural designs that may be beyond the established conventions of designers in the search for cost-efficient, structurally-sound designs. An effective design grammar that is capable of generating stable trusses is defined in this research. The design grammar supports the optimization of member size, in addition to truss geometry and topology. Multi-objective genetic algorithms were used to evolve sets of Pareto-optimal trusses that had varying topology, geometry, and member sizes. The Pareto-optimal curves provided design engineers with a range of near-optimal design alternatives that showed the tradeoffs that occur in meeting the stated objectives. Designers can select their final design from this set based on their own individual weighting of the design objectives. Trials are performed using a multiobjective genetic algorithm that works with the design grammar to evolve trusses for different span lengths. In addition to evaluate the performance of the developed optimization method further, trials were performed on a benchmark truss problem domain and the results obtained were compared with results obtained by other researchers. The results of the performance evaluation trials for the proposed method, in which the sizing, shape and topology were simultaneously performed, indicated that the method was effective in evolving a variety of truss topologies compared to previous published results, which evolved from a ground structure. The diverse topologies, however, were obtained over several trials instead of being found in a Pareto-optimal set found by a single trial. In addition, the proposed method was not able to locally optimize the member section sizes. Additional trials were performed to determine the benefit of applying local optimization to the member section sizes for a given truss topology or geometry provided by the method. The results indicate that significant weight reduction could be achieved by performing local optimization to the truss designs obtained by the proposed multi-objective optimization method.

Objective measurement techniques have been used since the 1930's to provide a more accurate method of gauging fabric quality than subjective hand evaluations. In addition to predicting subjective hand preferences, they also provide data on fabric development and ease of garment manufacture. The main techniques researched are the Kawabata Evaluation System and the Fabric Assurance by Simple Testing. The KES has been used to evaluate suiting, women's dresses, knitted fabrics and nonwoven fabrics. Research with the FAST has been limited to mainly suiting with some shirting. This has left a large area of work to be explored; whether the FAST can be used to assess fabrics for a wider range of end-uses. In this thesis, the investigation focuses on women's dress fabrics, specifically weight reduced polyester fabrics. The FAST system was modified in order to accurately differentiate between these fabrics. The Cusick drape tester was also used and further investigations focussed on other methods of testing drape, including the Aldrich method and one developed by the author. Although early indications were that this new test was repeatable, reproducible and correlated well with the Cusick method, it required more engineering work than was possible in the scope of this thesis and therefore was not used for the empirical work. The KES equipment for tensile and shear was also used and comparison made between the results of previous studies and with results found from the FAST. Statistical analysis was used throughout to establish both the effect of the weight reduction process on the fabric and its relationship to the problems of ease of manufacture, distortion of garment measurements and garment appearance. The modifications made to the FAST procedure and apparatus proved valid during the analysis. The effect of the weight reduction process was to soften the fabric, reducing the drape coefficient and bending and shear rigidity results and increasing the weft extension results. The appearance data could not be statistically analysed but it seemed that for the garment silhouette chosen, low or no weight reduction was required. Equations were established that predicted ease of manufacture and correlation factors were found between actual and predicted grades ranging from 0.71- 0.87. Interestingly, one of the most powerful combinations was the basis data of weight and number of warp ends. High correlation between predicted and actual grades was also found for the distortion problem (0.86).

ABSTRACT The aim of industrial production changed from mass production at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, production flexibility determines manufacturing companies' course of action. In this sense, Volvo Group Trucks Operations is interested in meeting customer demand in their assembly lines by adjusting manpower. Thus, this investigation attempts to analyze the effect of manning on the main final assembly line for thirteen-liter heavy-duty diesel engines at Volvo Group Trucks Operations in Skövde by means of discrete-event simulation. This project presents a simulation model that simulates the assembly line. With the purpose of building the model data were required. One the one hand, qualitative data were collected to improve the knowledge in the fields related to the project topic, as well as to solve the lack of information in certain points of the project. On the other hand, simulation model programming requires quantitative data. Once the model was completed, simulation results were obtained through simulation-based optimization. This optimization process tested 50,000 different workforce scenarios to find the most efficient solutions for three different sequences. Among all results, the most interesting one for Volvo is the one which render 80% of today’s throughput with the minimum number of workers. Consequently, as a case study, a bottleneck analysis and worker performance analysis was performed for this scenario. Finally, a flexible and fully functional model that delivers the desired results was developed. These results provide a comparison among different manning scenarios considering throughput as main measurement of the main final assembly line performance. After analyzing the results, system output behavior was revealed. This behavior allows predicting optimal system output for a given number of operators.

Cochlear implants (CI) can achieve excellent hearing outcomes for people with severe or profound hearing loss. However, outcomes vary significantly, and hearing in noise is challenging. Evaluation of new sound processing ideas with recipient testing is a lengthy process. A metric which reliably predicted CI speech intelligibility would allow more sound processing ideas and parameter sets to be evaluated. Prediction for normal hearing people has been extensively investigated but CIs have received little attention. In this thesis, it was hypothesised that an extended Output Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR) metric would be a reliable predictor of individual CI speech intelligibility. A series of retrospective CI experiments found i. OSNR was sensitive to changes in a range of test parameters, including Input Signal to Noise Ratio (ISNR), presentation level, noise type, and processing algorithms. ii. OSNR predicted mean speech scores for a group of recipients at least as accurately as other tested metrics. Being calculated at the sound processor output OSNR predicted scores in scenarios where other metrics could not. iii. A novel method, combining OSNR and test scores from a reference condition, predicted psychometric functions for individual CI recipients relatively accurately in many other conditions. Small differences in performance between test and reference conditions were accurately predicted. OSNR was not accurate in the presence of aggressive spectral masking. The feasibility of combining OSNR and Output Speech Power as an accurate predictor in this scenario was demonstrated. The author is not aware of any published works which predict psychometric functions for individual CI recipients listening to speech processed by novel algorithms, using scores from a separate, reference condition. Overall, there was considerable support for the hypothesis that OSNR was an accurate predictor. OSNR shows promise as a metric with research and clinical applications.

Municipal energy systems in Nordic environments face multiple challenges: the cold climate, large-scale industries, a high share of electric heating and long distances drive energy consumption. While actions on the demand side minimize energy use, decarbonization efforts in mining, industries, the heating and the transport sector can increase the consumption of electricity and biofuels. Continued growth of intermittent wind and solar power increases supply, but the planned phase out of Swedish nuclear power will pose challenges to the reliability of the electricity system in the Nordic countries. Bottlenecks in the transmission and distribution grids may restrict a potential growth of electricity use in urban areas, limit new intermittent supply, peak electricity import and export. Environmental concerns may limit growth of biomass use. Local authorities are committed in contributing to national goals on mitigating climate change, while considering their own objectives for economic development, increased energy self-sufficiency and affordable energy costs. Given these circumstances, this thesis investigates existing technical and economic potentials of renewable energy (RE) resources in the Nordic countries with a focus on the northern counties of Finland, Norway and Sweden. The research further aims to provide sets of optimal solutions for sustainable Nordic municipal energy systems, where the interaction between major energy sectors are studied, considering multiple objectives of minimizing annual energy system costs and reducing carbon emissions as well as analyzing impacts on peak electricity import and export. This research formulates an integrated municipal energy system as a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP), which is solved by interfacing the energy system simulation tool EnergyPLAN with a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) implemented in Matlab. In a first step, the integration or coupling of electricity and heating sectors is studied, and in a second step, the study inquires the impacts of an increasingly decarbonized transport sector on the energy system. Sensitivity analysis on key economic parameters and on different grid emission factors is performed. Piteå (Norrbotten County, Sweden) is a typical Nordic municipality, which serves as a case study for this research. The research concludes that significant techno-economic potentials exist for the investigated resources. Optimization results show that CO2 emissions of a Nordic municipal energy system can be reduced by about 60% without a considerable increase in total energy system costs and that peak electricity import can be reduced by up to 38%. The outlook onto 2030 shows that the transport sector could be composed of high electrification shares and biofuels. Technology choices for optimal solutions are highly sensitive to electricity prices, discount rates and grid emission factors. The inquiries of this research provide important insights about carbon mitigation strategies for integrated energy sectors within a perspective on Nordic municipalities. Future work will refine the transport model, develop and apply a framework for multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) enabling local decision makers to determine a technically and economically sound pathway based on the optimal alternatives provided, and analyze the existing policy framework affecting energy planning of local authorities.

Lokala myndigheter är engagerade i att bidra till nationella klimatmål, samtidigt som de följer sina egna mål för ekonomisk utveckling, ökad självförsörjning av energi och överkomliga energikostnader. Mot bakgrund av dessa omständigheter undersöker denna avhandling befintliga tekniska och ekonomiska potentialer för förnybar energi i Norden med fokus på de nordliga länen i Finland, Norge och Sverige. Forskningen syftar vidare till att utveckla optimala lösningar för hållbara nordiska kommunala energisystem, där samspelet mellan stora energisektorer studeras, med tanke på att minimera årliga energisystemkostnader och samtidigt minska koldioxidutsläppen samt analysera påverkan på elimport till och export från kommunen. Denna forskning formulerar ett integrerad kommunalt energisystem som multimåloptimeringsproblem (multi-objective optimisation problem - MOOP), som löses genom att kombinera simuleringsverktyget EnergyPLAN med en evolutionär algoritm implementerad i Matlab. I ett första steg studeras kopplingen av el- och värmesektorerna, och i ett andra steg effekterna av en integrerad och alltmer förnybar transportsektor på energisystemet. Känslighetsanalys på viktiga ekonomiska parametrar och på olika utsläppsfaktorer utförs. Piteå (Norrbottens län, Sverige) är en typisk nordisk kommun som fungerar som en fallstudie för detta arbete. Forskningens slutsatser innebär att det finns betydande teknisk-ekonomiska potentialer för de undersökta förnybara resurserna. Optimeringsresultaten visar att koldioxidutsläppen från ett nordiskt kommunalt energisystem kan minskas med cirka 60% utan en avsevärd ökning av de totala energisystemkostnaderna och att den högsta elimporten kan minskas med upp till 38%. Resultat för år 2030 visar att transportsektorn kan ha en mycket hög elektrifieringsgrad och samtidigt används biobränslen i tunga fordon. Optimala lösningar är mycket känsliga för elpriser, räntor och utsläppsfaktorer. Detta arbete ger viktiga insikter om strategier för koldioxidminskning för integrerade energisektorer i ett perspektiv på nordiska kommuner. Min framtida forskning kommer att förfina transportmodellen, utveckla och tillämpa ett ramverk för beslutsanalys med flera kriterier (multi-criteria decision analysis - MCDA) som ska stödja lokala myndigheter att fastställa tekniskt och ekonomiskt hållbara lösningar i deras energiplanering.

AbstractSince no systematic data is available in Nigeria (only anecdotes), an original data set was collected of 114 detailed questionnaires from 3 different people involved in each of 38 projects (19 abandoned, and 19 completed). The projects are matched by sector and size to allow comparisons, and three respondents per project reduce biases.While quantitative data allows “objective” statistical analysis, 11 of the projects were in addition described in detail in case study narratives, bringing the events to life and verifying the causality of interpretations. The case study analysis complements and enriches the statistical data analysis. This chapter explains the process of the investigation and why and what method design choices were made.

Condenser is one of the key components in nuclear power plant with pressurized water reactor. It is important to control the dimension and weight in the design of condenser through optimization techniques. In this paper, a mathematic model of a two pass condenser is set up for Qinshan I condenser. Some modifications are made based on the original multi-objective algorithm, and the comparison between modified algorithm and the original one is conducted. Furthermore, the multi-objective optimization design of the condenser, taking minimization of the coolant flow-rate and net weight as objectives, is carried out considering thermohydraulic and geometric constraints through hybrid Pareto-sorting multi-objective genetic algorithm (HPSMOGA). The sensitivities of some parameters, which may influence the coolant flow-rate and the net weight of condenser, are also analyzed. The results show that the mathematical model is agreeable for the condenser. it is also shown that the proposed multi-objective optimal method is more effective in searching non-dominated solutions. the sensitivity analysis show that the tube outer diameter, tube pitch, coolant velocity and coolant temperature rising influence the coolant flow-rate and net weight of the condenser more than other variables. The corresponding results would provide guidance in the engineering design of this type of condenser.

Dental arches in detachable prosthodontics may be categorized using Convolutional neural networks (CNN). By properly positioning the teeth, machine learning in CAD/CAM software can reestablish healthy inter-maxillary connections. AI may assist with accurate color matching in challenging cosmetic scenarios that include a single central incisor or many front teeth. Intraoral detectors can identify implant placements in implant prosthodontics and instantly input them into CAD software. The design and execution of dental implants could potentially be improved by utilizing AI.

This project objective evaluated the potential of improving linked weather-and-mobility model predictions by blending soil moisture observations from a Cosmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System (COSMOS) sensor with weather-informed predictions of soil moisture and soil strength from the Geospatial Weather-Affected Terrain Conditions and Hazards (GeoWATCH). Assimilating vehicle-borne COSMOS observations that measure local effects model predictions of soil moisture offered potential to produce more accurate soil strength and vehicle mobility forecast was the hypothesis. This project compared soil moisture observations from a COSMOS mobile sensor driven around an area near Iowa Falls, IA, with both GeoWATCH soil moisture predictions and in situ probe observations. The evaluation of the COSMOS rover data finds that the soil moisture measurements contain a low measurement bias while the GeoWATCH estimates more closely matched the in situ data. The COSMOS rover captured a larger dynamic range of soil moisture conditions as compared to GeoWATCH, capturing both very wet and very dry soil conditions, which may better flag areas of high risk for mobility considerations. Overall, more study of the COSMOS rover is needed to better understand sensor performance in a variety of soil conditions to determine the feasibility of assimilating the COSMOS rover estimates into GeoWATCH.

Recent concerns regarding global warming and energy security have accelerated research and developmental efforts to produce biofuels from agricultural and forestry residues, and energy crops. Anaerobic digestion is a promising process for producing biogas-biofuel from biomass feedstocks. However, there is a need for new reactor designs and operating considerations to process fibrous biomass feedstocks. In this research project, the multiphase flow behavior of biomass particles was investigated. The objective was accomplished through both simulation and experimentation. The simulations included both particle-level and bulk flow simulations. Successful computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of multiphase flow in the digester is dependent on the accuracy of constitutive models which describe (1) the particle phase stress due to particle interactions, (2) the particle phase dissipation due to inelastic interactions between particles and (3) the drag force between the fibres and the digester fluid. Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations of Homogeneous Cooling Systems (HCS) were used to develop a particle phase dissipation rate model for non-spherical particle systems that was incorporated in a two-fluid CFDmultiphase flow model framework. Two types of frictionless, elongated particle models were compared in the HCS simulations: glued-sphere and true cylinder. A new model for drag for elongated fibres was developed which depends on Reynolds number, solids fraction, and fibre aspect ratio. Schulze shear test results could be used to calibrate particle-particle friction for DEM simulations. Several experimental measurements were taken for biomass particles like olive pulp, orange peels, wheat straw, semolina, and wheat grains. Using a compression tester, the breakage force, breakage energy, yield force, elastic stiffness and Young’s modulus were measured. Measurements were made in a shear tester to determine unconfined yield stress, major principal stress, effective angle of internal friction and internal friction angle. A liquid fludized bed system was used to determine critical velocity of fluidization for these materials. Transport measurements for pneumatic conveying were also assessed. Anaerobic digestion experiments were conducted using orange peel waste, olive pulp and wheat straw. Orange peel waste and olive pulp could be anaerobically digested to produce high methane yields. Wheat straw was not digestible. In a packed bed reactor, anaerobic digestion was not initiated above bulk densities of 100 kg/m³ for peel waste and 75 kg/m³ for olive pulp. Interestingly, after the digestion has been initiated and balanced methanogenesis established, the decomposing biomass could be packed to higher densities and successfully digested. These observations provided useful insights for high throughput reactor designs. Another outcome from this project was the development of low cost devices to measure methane content of biogas for off-line (US$37), field (US$50), and online (US$107) applications.

The objectives of this proposal were (1) to develop early age short-term restrict feeding protocols which eliminate the incidence of TD without compromising market weight performance and (2) monitor the components of the PTH/PTHrP cascade in conjunction with the development of the protocols in Objective 1. In this investigation it was established that changes in gene expression associated with TD occur as early as 13 days of age. This means that management strategies for the control of this disease must be established during the initial two weeks of rearing. In order to determine a focus for these management strategies, attempts were made to identify the metabolic defect responsible for tibial dyschondroplasia. Therefore, the parathyroid hormone/parathyrod related peptide (PTH/PTHrP) cascade of events was investigated. This emphasis was based on the fact that many nutritional factors that influence TD could be operating through this system. Secondly, the receptor for these peptides acts as the gatekeeper of chondrocyte differentiation. Examination of many aspects of this cascade led to the conclusion that TD is not the direct result of perturbation of this PTH/PTHrP receptor but is likely to develop from an interruption of a pathway downstream from this receptor.
