This paper describes Cymbella sensu lato (Cymbopleura, Delicata, Encyonema, Encyonopsis and Reimeria) species from two different ecoregions of India. In the present study, twenty-six diatom taxa belonging to the genus Cymbella sensu lato were identified. In the flora nineteen species were recorded from the Vindhya region while eleven from the Himalaya. All of them were first records for the Vindhyan rivers. Seven taxa were new records for the Himalayan river.

All sipunculan species currently known to occur on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Curaçao are reviewed. Included are species previously reported in the primary literature and those collected by Cutler (EBC) in 1987/1988 and Hernández-Ávila (IHA) in 2003/2004. Nineteen species of sipunculans belonging to eleven genera are known from this region. Most specious is the genus Aspidosiphon with seven species and the genus Phascolosoma with three species.

In the present research, long-range prediction of average summer monsoon rainfall over India has been attempted through three layered artificial neural network models. The study is based on the summer monsoon data pertaining to the years 1871–1999. Nineteen neural network models have been developed with variable hidden layer size. Total rainfall amounts in the summer monsoon months of a given year have been used as input and the average summer monsoon rainfall of the following year has been used as the desired output to execute a supervised backpropagation learning procedure. After a thorough training and test procedure, a neural network with eleven nodes in the hidden layer is found to be the most proficient in forecasting the average summer monsoon rainfall of a given year with the said predictors. Finally, the performance of the eleven-hidden-nodes three-layered neural network has been compared with the performance of the asymptotic regression technique. Ultimately it has been established that the eleven-hidden-nodes three-layered neural network has more efficacy than asymptotic regression in the present forecasting task.

The good antibacterial and aromatic supplements produced in Japan for preservation of milks at storage was investigated. Nineteen sweet and herb materials were made juices as supplements to preserve the milks. Bacterial counts, pH, protease activities and lipase activities of supplemented milks, and antibacterial activities of supplements were detected by total plate counts, glass electrode pH meter, azocasein, modified Dole extraction and turbidity methods. Eleven of nineteen milks added 10% of honey, garlic, ginger, horseradish, “sansho”, “yuzu”, green perilla, “nira”, green tea, bamboo leaf and “yomogi” were selected as good supplemented milks based on pH of these milks closed to pH of milks, the lower bacterial counts, protease activities and lipase activities of these milks than that without supplements, at 5 days before up to 10 days after use by date (P<0.05), consumed materials and antibacterial activities of these supplements in inhibiting Pseudomonas fluorescens P. 33 in the nutrient media.

Aims: The aims of this study were to: (1) examine the concurrent validity of self-rated health for mental and physical health in Europe; and (2) evaluate whether self-rated health predicts health problems differentially by gender. Methods: Data are from 19 European countries surveyed in the 2014 European Social Survey. We applied ordinary least squares regression to examine the association between self-rated health and summary indicators of physical and mental health problems. Results: We observed an association between self-rated health and both physical and mental health problems in all countries. Gender differences in the concurrent validity of self-rated health were documented in eleven out of 19 countries. Conclusions: Self-rated health is a valid and efficient measure of physical and mental health across the European continent, with significantly greater concurrent validity among women.

Introduction Pseudoaneurysm formation following ankle arthroscopy is a rare but potentially catastrophic complication. The placement of anterior ankle portals carries inherent risk to the superficial and deep peroneal nerves, as well as to the dorsalis pedis artery. Anatomical variations in the dorsalis pedis and the presence of branches at the joint line may increase the risk of vascular injury and pseudoaneurysm formation during arthroscopy. There is limited anatomical evidence available regarding the branches of the dorsalis pedis artery, which occur at the point at which they cross the ankle joint. Objectives The objective of the study was to describe the frequency and direction of branches of the dorsalis pedis crossing the ankle joint. Materials and Methods Nineteen cadaveric feet were carefully dissected to explore the course of the dorsalis pedis artery, noting in particular the branching pattern at the joint line. Results Eleven of the nineteen feet had a branch of the dorsalis pedis artery that crossed the level of the ankle joint. Out of these, six were lateral, four medial and one bilateral. Eight of the eleven specimens had one branch at, or just before, the level of the joint. Two specimens had two branches and one had three branches crossing the ankle, which were all in the same direction, crossing laterally to the main trunk of the dorsalis pedis. Conclusions Our study demonstrated high rates of branching of the dorsalis pedis artery at the level of the ankle joint. The role of these branches in pseudoaneurysm formation during anterior hindfoot surgery remains unclear.

Nineteen polymorphic and eleven monomorphic isozyme loci were identified in thirteen enzyme systems in a survey of four-hundred melon (Cucumis melo L.) accessions. Segregation of allozymes in F2 and backcross (BC) families for isozyme loci agreed with the expected 1:2:1 and 1:1 segregation ratios (P <0.01). Eleven isozyme loci were linked and were integrated to form a map containing two linkage groups spanning 98 cM with a mean linkage distance of ≈9 cM. Linkage groups (A and B) contain the following loci in the order: A Fdp-2, Pgd, Pgm, Mpi-1, Idh, and Ac, and B Pep-gl, Mdh-2, Mdh-4, Mdh-5, Mdh-6. The remaining eight loci (Acp-1, Acp-4, Ak-4, Fdp-1, Gpi, Mpi-2, Pep-la, and Pep-pap) segregated independently. The isozyme map constructed in this study provides genomic information for future linkage studies with economically important traits and concensus map construction through map merging.

We studied the EEG and Rorschach test (RT) of nineteen AIDS patients and eight normal people in the same age group. Eight patients presented slow alpha rhythms (8 to 9 Hz); three, not-slow alpha rhythms (>9 to 13Hz); and eight, beta rhythms in background activity. Paroxystic activity, characterized by diffuse theta or delta waves, was present in eleven patients. We observed Oberholzer syndrome (organic dementia diagnosed by RT) in ten patients and Piotrowski syndrome (organic dementia diagnosed by RT) in eleven patients; six presented both. When considering only the group of AIDS patients, we did not observe a significant relation among slow alpha rhythm, not-slow alpha rhythm and the presence of paroxystic activity with the above-mentioned syndromes. AIDS patients with slow alpha rhythms showed a significantly greater number of Piotrowski syndrome dementia indicators when compared to normal individuals or those with slow alpha rhythms. We did not observe the same with Oberholzer syndrome.

This article identifies and analyses the success factors involved in project management through an exploratory study that encompasses nineteen interviews, fifty-seven surveys and one session with a focus group of project managers, department managers who have taken the role of project managers and general managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the information technology (IT) sector in Bogota, Colombia. After analyzing the information, the authors identified eleven factors for the achievement of project management goals in these organizations. These comprise managerial, organizational and sector aspects that influence the resource management and leadership in projects of SMEs of information technology.

The studies presented in this dissertation establish the dynamics of Eleven nineteen Lysine-rich leukemia (ELL) family of elongation factors during B cell differentiation and provide a description of ELL3 function in B cells. The transition from a mature naïve B cells into an activated B cell is dependent on a large increase in transcriptional output, which is followed by focused expression on secreted immunoglobulin upon terminal differentiation into plasma cell. While ELL family members have previously been implicated in alternative splicing at the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus in plasma cells, their presence and function prior to differentiation is currently not known. However, the use of elongation factors has been implied by the finding of mostly paused RNA polymerase II in the genome of naïve B cells. In the first study, the expression of transcriptional elongation factor ELL3 is shown to be restricted to activated B cells and B cell lymphomas. All three family members were characterized in B cell lymphoma cell lines, genome wide expression, microarray analysis and primary B cell stimulus. The expression of ELL3 was induced upon activation of B cells concurrently with family member ELL. In addition, the abundant expression of ELL3 was restricted to GC derived B cell lymphoma cell lines. While the expression of ELL is maintained, the expression of ELL3 is diminished and ELL2 is up-regulated in terminally differentiated plasma cells. The expression of master regulator of terminal plasma cell differentiation PRDM1 was inverse correlated with that of ELL3. To further establish PRDM1s role in regulating the ELL family member dynamics, global binding was assessed in plasma cell lines. Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by quantitative PCR was utilized to identify direct association of PRDM1 at exclusively the ELL3 loci. Ectopic expression of PRDM1 in B cells down regulated the expression of ELL3. Furthermore, two consensus PRDM1 binding sites were defined at the ELL3 loci, which mediate significant repression of the promoter activity. Collectively, these experiments indicate that PRDM1 mediates the switch from ELL3 in B cells to ELL2 in plasma cells. The data presented in the final chapter aimed at defining a function for ELL3 in the cells that express it most abundantly, which are B cell lymphoma cell lines. Transient depletion of ELL3 in a Burkitt’s lymphoma cell line resulted in a diminished proliferation rate due to a severe disruption of DNA replication and its regulators minichromosome maintenance proteins. Additionally, compromised cell division and mitotic regulators were observed along with increased DNA damage and cell death. The data presented here demonstrate a key role for ELL3 in the proliferation and survival of B cell lymphomas and positions ELL3 as an attractive therapeutic target against B cell lymphoma’s with a germinal center origin.

Although New Orleans culture has been a popular subject for historians due to its ethnic diversity and multiculturalism, certain groups have been ignored in the city's vast historiography. Such is the case of Hispanics, who have been present for most of the city's history. This study recovers a portion of that lost Hispanic history through analysis of Spanish-language newspapers published in New Orleans throughout the nineteenth century. One of these newspapers, El Moro de Paz, was published with the goal of encouraging the advancement of trade relationships between Louisiana and Latin America. A study of El Moro de Paz and its Spanish-born publisher could contribute to an understanding of the role that New Orleans played in the emergence of the New South after the Civil

This research, which combines historical survey, performance practice, and practice-led methods, examines the evolution of the Italian opera conductor and their subsequent influence upon the development of the Italian verismo composer. The focus of the research is on musical criteria such as tempo markings, tempo modification, and rhythmic freedom (rubato). The transformation from the composer as chief interpreter of their own music, the conductor as chief interpreter, is also explored. Such an examination contextualises performance practices of the conductor of Italian opera. Practical insights are gained from analysis and emulation (imitation) of specific historical sound recordings of Italian opera in conjunction with contemporary written evidence. This allows the researcher to draw conclusions about historically appropriate conducting practices of the era. The research uses creative work approaches and presents case studies to explore the un-notated tempo conventions of the nineteenth-century Italian opera conductor. Recordings include those by Arturo Toscanini (1867–1957), as well as composers-conductors such as Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857–1919) and Pietro Mascagni (1863–1845), all of which preserve late nineteenth-century conducting traditions. Historical research methodology augments the practice-led research and brings to light additional important findings. This is achieved by compiling documented historical evidence to highlight key elements that illustrate the evolution of the opera conductor’s performance practices during the verismo era.

This dissertation is a cultural history of the American elm. It explores the transformation of a native tree into a major icon of New England culture in the nineteenth century-both as a multi valanced symbol of New England life, and a defining element in the spatial design of its villages, towns and cities. Drawing from a wide range of source material-traveler's records, local histories, town and municipal records and contemporary newspaper accounts-the study traces the forces and events which made the elm a ubiquitous feature of the Yankee scene, and a core element in the identity and image of the region. The historical narrative begins with a description of the tree in the pre-European era, and explains how cultural disturbance by both native Americans and colonists amplified the elm's presence in the landscape. Subsequent chapters examine the tree first as a solitary or totemic artifact in the landscape, and then as a element which, following a region-wide "village improvement movement" in the 1840s, was planted in vast numbers in villages, towns and cities. The totemic elm endowed Yankee space with meaning, as a civic centerpiece, a relic of antiquity, or a monument to specific historical events or persons. Planted en masse as a street tree, elms changed the quality of that space itself, transforming the appearance of the common landscape, and forging one of the most powerful images of place in American history-the elm-tossed New England town. The study culminates by examining the symbolic and spatial significance of the tree in the urban context, and argues that city elms were perceived by nineteenth-century observers as a mechanism of synthesis between rus and urbe. Long before the Olmsted park, planting elms on city streets placed the elusive ideal of a "pastoral city" within reach. As Charles Dickens observed of New Haven in his American Notes (1842), city elms brought about "a kind of compromise between town and country; as if each had met the other half-way, and shaken hands upon it." In conclusion, the seminal influence of New England on American culture at large is considered, a factor which eventually made the elm a national icon, and "Elm Street" an American institution.

Choosing piecewise-linear approximants on a set of triangles which he called elements, he dashed off a couple of two-dimensional examples and the finite element method was born. … Finite element activity in electrical engineering began in earnest about 1968-1969. A paper on waveguide analysis was published in Alta Frequenza in early 1969, giving the details of a finite element formulation of the classical hollow waveguide problem. The aim of this essay is to identify patterns of textual variation that affect both the source text(s) and its translations. Starting with the substitution of the word ‘spare’ with ‘square’ in the ‘red-room’ episode, textual variations are analysed in a selection of English editions of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre published by prestigious publishing houses such as Collins, Harper, Oxford, Norton Critical, and Penguin―from the second half of the nineteenth-century to the most recent editions, including e-books (Amazon) and *.txt files (Project Gutenberg). Variations in English editions are compared against the original Brontë’s manuscript (1847) and tracked down in eleven Italian translations.

AbstractPsychology is widely thought to have emerged as a scientific discipline only quite recently: at the end of the nineteenth century. Psychological thinking had nevertheless been occurring for millennia, and such thinking formed a significant element of Greek philosophy in the centuries before the Common Era. The Greeks, no strangers to war, applied this thinking to military matters, such as learning, motivation, and the roles of environment and heredity in human development. From these beginnings, the systematic study of the unique considerations that arise when humans come together in military undertakings began. The industrialization of warfare that began in the nineteenth century added new questions and problems, problems which became more urgent just as the novel application of the methods of science to human psychology became institutionalized in universities in the decades before World War I. Today, military psychology is a vibrant and dynamic field that focuses on a core set of stable and enduring areas of study that include leadership, personnel selection, training, human factors, human performance, and clinical psychology. As military technology and the nature of warfare continue to evolve within the context of national and social institutions that are themselves constantly in flux, military psychology will adapt to encompass the new questions and problems brought by these changes.

AbstractThere has never been a golden age in Swedish education. However, there was a “silver age” that began approximately in the second half of the nineteenth century and ended around 1960. The chapter outlines this history. It demonstrates that the established view of the previous school system is deeply misleading. In fact, an increasing share of young cohorts were offered excellent educational opportunities. After World War I, a truly national curriculum was introduced that imparted relevant knowledge and skills to students based on the principles of teacher-led presentation, repetition, and practice, and by matching the sequence of topics to each student’s maturity and prior knowledge. A key element in the modernization of the educational system was the state’s preoccupation with ensuring that highly qualified and motivated persons were attracted to the teaching profession.

Extensive research on centrifugal pumps was designed to investigate the impact of a diffuser on flow field instabilities and the noise generated by these instabilities. Activity was based upon a coupled use of measurements and 3D fully-viscous, unsteady computations. The test model was a seven-blade pump-turbine, used as a pump. Fitted with a vaneless diffuser, and two vaned diffusers with twenty-two adjustable, guide-diffuser vanes, and a return channel with eleven continuous vanes. Diffusers were equipped with eight pressure sensors in the adjustable guide-diffuser vanes, and nineteen pressure taps in the continuous vanes. To establish a link between the flow field structure and acoustic radiation, flow velocity was measured in the vaneless part of the diffuser. Piezoelectric transducers, placed flush with the wall, were used to measure pressure fluctuation inside the blade channels. Signal analysis was carried out in the frequency domain. Results showed the jet-wake flow pattern induced an unstable vortex, which influenced flow discharging from the adjacent passage, and destabilized jet-wake flow in the passage. This instability caused a periodic fluctuation at the discharge of the impeller. Fluctuations were found to be coherent from blade to blade, and to possess a rich harmonic content. Numerical analyses did not fully confirm these results.

The National Combustion Code (OpenNCC) was used to perform parametric design and analysis for three iterations of pre-filming injector design for gas-turbine combustors. The CFD analysis had significant impact on the design, integration and fabrication of a third-generation Lean-Direct Injection (LDI-3) flame-tube assembly consisting of nineteen injection elements. The air passages of the three pilot elements and sixteen main injection elements consisted of CFD-optimized compound-angle discrete jets and dual axial-bladed swirl-venturi passages, respectively. The aerodynamic characteristics of the nineteen-element injection array were evaluated by performing non-reacting flow simulation using a Time-Filtered Navier-Stokes (TFNS) method. The pilot and main injection elements were fueled with conventional pressure-atomizers and newly designed pre-filming nozzles, respectively. Fuel-air mixing and combustion performance was evaluated with reacting-flow TFNS computations using a 14-species, 18-step reduced kinetics mechanism for Jet-A fuel, Lagrangian spray modeling and a PDF turbulent-chemistry interaction model. The TFNS reacting-flow simulations provided considerable insight into the correlation between aerodynamics, combustion and emissions performance of the newly-designed pilot and main injection elements for the LDI-3 combustor at simulated cruise conditions.

This paper presents a description of a one-dimensional, constant-radius, stage-by-stage (blade-element) axial compressor model used for compressor map generation and gas turbine off-design performance prediction. This model is designed for investigators who are without access to the proprietary compressor performance information of the gas turbine manufacturers but who are nevertheless interested in predicting the off-design performance of large utility gas turbine power systems. Model performance results (compressor maps) are reported for simulation of a nineteen-stage axial compressor designed by Allison Gas Turbine for the Electric Power Research Institute. The model is further demonstrated by simulating the NACA Eight Stage compressor. The resulting compressor maps are in good qualitative agreement with published maps and are useful for gas turbine power system performance simulation studies. This general-purpose modeling procedure can be applied to any axial compressor for which sufficient airfoil geometry and design-point performance information is known.

From Archive Documents the Virtual Reconstruction of the Fortress of PescaraWhen the Unity of Italy occurred, the ancient fortress of Pescara, marked by the river with the same name, was demolished to allow the expansion of the Adriatic city. On the mighty sixteenth century building, eastern defense of the Kingdom of Naples, remain only the eighteenth and nineteenth century maps made by the military. A rigorous study conducted by us on the historic center of Pescara has allowed us to carry out extensive archival surveys and punctual inspections. Then different documents emerged and testimonies that encouraged a virtual reconstruction of the disappeared artefact in which the military garrison and the inhabited nucleus were enclosed. The virtual reconstruction of the fortress that is presented here has been elaborated by resorting the nineteenth century maps, carefully analyzed and compared to perform, critically, a translation of the two-dimensional technical figuration in three-dimensional processing. A sort of regeneration of the historical image was thus conducted with the intent of recovering a fundamental element of the city, almost completely forgotten.

There are many models of impact used to predict the post-impact conditions of a system and all of them are based on Hertz’s theory, dated from the nineteenth century, where the repulsive force is proportional to the deformation of the bodies under contact and may also be proportional to the rate of deformation. The objective of this work is to analyze the behavior of the bodies during impact using some contact models and compare the results to a Finite Element Method model. The main parameters which will be evaluated are the body velocities, the contact force and the deformation of the bodies. An advantage of using the Finite Element Method is the possibility to apply plastic deformation to the model according to material definition. In the present study, it will be used Johnson–Cook plasticity model where the parameters are obtained based on empirical tests of real materials. Thus, it is possible to compare the behavior of elastic and plastic numerical models with the finite element model and to verify how these models reproduce the impact between solid bodies.

Synchronous belts are widely used as a power transmission element in many industrial equipments. The construction of the belts is a rubber and a helical cord as a tension member in the belts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fatigue failure mechanism of the synchronous belts using steel cords. The steel cord focused here is 1*19 construction, that is made twisting nineteen steel wires. At first, the fatigue failure initiation site was found observing the failure morphology and measuring the belt deformation. Then, the fatigue failure mechanism was discussed with some fatigue tests of the steel cords and any mechanical and finite-element analysis. The belt failure was initiated near the tooth root, where the steel cords were fatigued. The belt curvature was measured by using the deformation of the marker lines that were put on the side surface of the belt. The belt was bent largely near the tooth root under high belt tension conditions. Namely, the belt was damaged by the bending fatigue near the tooth root. Then, the bending fatigue of the steel cord was tested and discussed the fatigue failure mechanism. The fatigue failure was firstly initiated in the outer layer wires. However, the bending stress was lower in the outer layer wires than in the core wire, according to a simple geometrical analysis. It is necessary to consider the initiation of another type of stresses based on the contact between the wires. Therefore, the finite-element was analyzed. We discussed the stress component that accelerated the fatigue failure in the outer layer wires. The friction force that was initiated between the wires well explained the acceleration of the fatigue failure in the outer layer wires.

An industry survey, dominated by PRCI member companies, was undertaken to gather key information regarding the design, operation and inspection of well bore casing strings. The aim of the survey was to gather information regarding the design standards, fields, gas composition, completion configuration, operational details, inspection methods and type of damage found. Survey results representing 67 storage facilities with a total of 4724 wells were received. This represents approximately 16% of US gas storage facilities. Facilities with initial completion dates between 1920 and 1990 were represented within the survey. The date of conversion from production to gas storage of the responding facilities ranged from the 1920�s to 2000. Non-linear finite element analysis has been used to determine the significance of an isolated pit corrosion metal loss defect in tubing/casing strings subject to the bounding load cases. Pit defects of depths up to 80% of the wall thickness (t) and diameter 2t were investigated to determine the failure behavior under the nineteen bounding load cases. Nine full-scale burst tests were undertaken in order to determine whether existing assessment methods could be used to predict failure of casing and tubing. Failure loci of 2t diameter and 80% deep defects have been derived for casing subject to combined loading. Full scale testing has only been undertaken with internal pressure loading to validate the approach taken to predict failure.

The article examines the world and Ukrainian history of corporate periodicals. The main purpose of this study is to reproduce an objective global picture of the emergence and formation of corporate periodicals, taking into account the business and socio-economic context. Accordingly, its tasks are to compare the conditions and features of corporate media genesis in different countries, to determine the main factors of their development, as well as to clarify the transformations of the terminological apparatus. The research is based on mostly foreign secondary scientific works published from 1915 to the present time. The literature was studied using methods such as overview, historical, functional and thematic analysis, description, and generalization. A systematic approach was used to determine the role and place of each element in the system, as well as to comprehensively consider the object in the general historical context and within the current scientific discourse. The method of systematization made it possible to establish internal and external connections, patterns and contradictions in the development of the object of study. The main historical milestones on this path are identified, examples of the first successful corporate publications and their contribution to business development, public relations, and corporate communications are considered. It was found that corporate media emerged in the mid-nineteenth century spontaneously, on the wave of practical business needs in response to industrialization, company increase, staff growth, and consumer market development. Their appearance preceded the formation of the public relations industry and changed the structure of the information space. The scientific significance of this research is that the historical look at the evolution of corporate media provides an understanding of their place, influence, capabilities, and growing communicative role in the digital age.
