Abstract Electronic distribution is challenging the newspaper industry to seek new ways of publishing; consequently, news content could be processed on and for a variety of output platforms. Electronic paper (e-paper) could turn into a major newspaper publishing channel due to its ability to display content in a paper-like manner, with lower weight, lower power consumption, and facilitated handling compared to a computer, but without the major publishing and distribution costs associated with printed newspapers. This work is based on seven case studies of newspaper companies in Sweden, Europe and North America, and analyses newspaper companies’ views on future e-paper publishing. The objective has been to examine the conditions that would enable the e-paper medium to become viable as a newspaper-publishing channel. Newspaper companies regard the idea of a future e-paper edition as very promising, but are uncertain as to what strategy to use. The final product will be a balance between cost, reorganization, the available number of rich media, and updates. Based on the companies’ views, five models of how to incorporate an e-paper publishing channel into existing newspaper production have been proposed. The appropriateness of the models depends on each newspaper company’s conditions, including assets, consumer base and demographics, current workflow, and future strategies.

In response to concern about newspaper coverage of bank robberies in Australia, this study examines whether newspaper publicity resulting from successful bank robberies leads to copycat increases of bank and other robberies during the following week. It makes use of police records of robberies in New South Wales and newspaper stories for 1987 to 1989 from the two tabloids published daily in Sydney. No evidence of any copycat effect was found. Moreover, there was little evidence that the newspapers concerned were paying undue attention to bank robbery.

Nowadays, the global newspapers market is considered to be in deep crisis as shown by the decrease in circulations, narrowing of the distribution areas, and the advertising market capacity decrease. At the same time, the quality newspapers that cover social and political issues, (e.g. The New York Times) stay very influential and effective in terms of financial indicators. The determination of factors that allow such newspapers to operate effectively in conditions of market decrease is an important task for both researchers and actors of media space. The paper herein is aimed at discovering of such factors with the use of the studies of The New York Times as the most influential newspaper in the US. The subject is studied with the use of researches on newspaper’s genesis and Adolph Ochs’s influence on setting the factors that have been supporting the newspaper effective operations so far. The biographical and ideographical approaches are used to determine the basics that Adolph Ochs used to reform the newspaper in XIX century. The results herein show that Ochs used the business-oriented approach for the newspaper: he used the popular newspapers optimization methods for the quality press (lowered the retail price, increased the advertising space, increased the size of advertisements, and optimized the delivery methods) but aimed at intellectuals as a main target audience. Ochs showed that the use of appropriate informational and economical politics allows the newspaper to be successful on informational market since US society demanded for the quality journalistic. The understanding of the development strategy of one of the leading newspaper that remains successful in modern conditions of media space transformation is beneficial not only for the building of competition practice but for the modernization of local and national segments of newspaper industry. The paper’s results may be used for adjusting the strategies of existing media and for the comparison of the basics specified herein with the basics of other quality newspapers.

This paper sets out to explore the concept of readership through a quantitative examination of Central Queensland newspaper readers. Because most Australian media audience research is undertaken by market research companies on behalf of news media corporations, an independent study of readership is needed in order to reveal data which can be used in future studies of regional newspapers and readership. Such data may also be useful in enabling regional newspapers to begin a process of forming stronger connections with their readers and communities. This paper focuses on data collected about newspaper readers in Central Queensland. While discussing Central Queensland newspaper readers, their demographics and newspaper reading habits more generally, this paper establishes a series of mini-profiles of these newspaper readers and investigates the issues which readers would like to see covered more often or less frequently by the newspapers they use. It suggests that these profiles are important for researchers wanting to investigate media in Central Queensland, and that the profiles may provide interesting comparisons of points from which to undertake readership research in other regions of Australia. As well, this paper suggests that such information is essential if regional newspapers are to fulfil the important role they have in their communities and reflect the concerns of their publics. Finally, this paper argues that such data are essential in the process of improving relations between regional newspapers and their communities, and ensuring they adequately reflect their publics.

Between the late 1890s and the early 1930s, newspaper chains experienced new growth. The number of newspaper acquisitions and mergers increased and decreased simultaneously with the emergence and decline of the “merger movements.” This study examines the two waves of merger activity affecting all industries around 1900 and the 1920s and compares it to acquisitions and mergers by the largest newspaper chains. This paper suggests that acquisition activity of all business and industry paralleled the acquisition activity in newspapers and fueled the growth of chains through acquisitions; thus newspapers concentrated at an increased rate because of the larger macroeconomic trend and not because of a tendency isolated to the newspaper industry.

This paper provides a historical overview of German newspapers published in Osijek. In the period between the liberation from the Turks and the end of World War Two, almost half of Osijek’s population were Germans, which enabled them to play a significant role in all aspects of city life, and newspaper publishing was no exception. A review of German newspapers published in Osijek revealed that they differed in content, publication frequency and longevity. After reading and reviewing both scholarly and scientific literature, it was concluded that most facts about the newspapers were not completely, but partially preserved in a non-chronological order. Newspaper publishers operated in difficult circumstances and frequently changed editors and owners. However, today, we can claim, that German newspapers published in Osijek were vital, diverse in form and important to (educated) readers and their needs and habits. The newspapers were similar to magazines and covered all facets of life, including politics, science, economy, art and culture. Such newspapers covered everything their readership might find interesting, and many Croats contributed to those German newspapers as associates. This paper is based on the review of research and scholarly and scientific papers. The intention was to follow the logical and chronological structure of German newspapers.

Newspapers in Switzerland and the Netherlands, have lost half of their classified adverts to the internet as reflected in an article titled: Who killed the Newspaper? in The Economist of April 24, 2006. However, in recent time, the Nigerian economy has faced a major decline that has affected the existence of newspapers. The marriage of newspapers to the web has not yet proved financially successful for the older medium (Baran, 2012). Thus, this paper examined the impact of economic recession and the internet on newspapers in Nigeria. Study adopted the survey research, sampling four hundred staff of selected newspapers and anchored on the political economy theory. Study found that seven out of ten staff of the four newspapers representing 77.4% said their daily activities are affected by the current economic recession; five out of ten staff of the four newspaper houses representing 47.3% strongly agreed that the internet has effect on the readership of printed newspaper, and four out of ten sampled representing 39.5% said that their management performed fairly during the period. It is therefore recommended that for newspaper houses to survive recession, they should relate with employees and motivate them to give their best. An e-newspaper is the result of newspaper content adapted to electronic paper. Electronic paper is a display technology which has many favourable attributes. It is a passive display technology which means that it can have the appearence of paper due to its high contrast, it is readable like paper due to only changing its pixels when the image changes and also uses very little power making it suitable for mobile uses. Making an e-newspaper service has many challenges, the areas focused on in this thesis are namely layout and distribution. There is great differences between an online newspaper and a paper newspaper, and the question is which direction is suitable for an e-newspaper. Some of the factors that plays a role includes rates of updates, feel of quality, ``charm'' and of course personal preferences. Distribution is split in two different approaches, pull or push. The latter most preferable because it gives the quickest updates in an automatic fashion. The reason for considering pull distribution is because it is more suited for devices that wishes to limit the time with an active air interface. There was made a demonstration of such an e-newspaper service, with a standard template, online newspaper inspired, layout and pull distribution to accomodate the chosen e-paper device's poor battery life. The pull distribution was further user initiated to conserve even more power. The software made for this demonstration can be found in the accompanying archive file. There was a test group, which evaluated the demonstration for a period of time. They did not completely agree with the layout choices, as they favoured a layout closer to the original paper source. That the download was user initiated was not a great problem though.

In this paper we have studied how user designed mock-ups, together with video recordings,

can contribute in the process of generating user requirements when designing the future e-

newspaper. The mock-ups originate from future workshop carried out within the DigiNews

project. By analyzing user designed mock-ups to retrieve user requirements and evaluating

the results against a focus group and newspaper designers we gained understanding on how

mock-ups can contribute as data input in a user involved design process. The study concludes

that mock-ups are an effective tool for making use of users’ visions and opinions in a

dynamic design process.

This thesis contributes to understanding contemporary newspaper design and redesigns in quality and popular newspapers with a focus on art directors’ perspective. A triangulated multi-method investigation of newspapers in the United Kingdom and Finland produces several original contributions to knowledge. As little data exists on contemporary newspaper design in these countries, a content analysis of newspapers captures a snapshot of its current state. This reveals design elements that function as genre markers and cross-national differences in their use. Quality papers use a more rule-governed design employing a narrow range of expression, while the populars employ a wider range of expression. Existing literature, largely ignoring popular papers, provides little knowledge about how art directors see their work and how redesigns are conducted. I investigate these issues through qualitative in-depth interviews with art directors. They reveal several differences between the genres. Quality papers implement large scale redesigns with intervals of several years. Popular papers perform small gradual changes, evolving almost constantly. In both genres, art directors rely largely on their professional intuition in making design decisions. They might use metaphorical newspaper personalities, possibly as energysaving devices similar to genre. They see several roles for newspaper design, including journalism and enhancing usability. They acknowledge a connection between design and branding, but no evidence is found that newspaper design has been taken over by branding. Art directors are shown to be the true gatekeepers of redesigns, as executives leading the process usually entrust them with final decisions. I present a naturalistic reconceptualisation of newspaper design, taking steps towards a conceptual framework for the currently pre-paradigmatic field. I propose using the concept of visual energy for summarising the effect of design features, which can be used to describe the relative positions of newspapers and their genres.

In a more digitalized world the paper industry has struggled to deliver customer value and stay relevant when the digital media has started to emerge. This problem has especially happened to newspaper which has seen a decline in Sweden with over 20% the last decade. Paper mills has also started to destroy shareholder value as many mills only work with offering customers low prices and tries to outlive their competitors. This has led to the following research objective of this study:  To examine the importance of end customer value in paper industry for developing market shares in the digital era. This study has been an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative data collection. The data has been to one part been collected through a market survey that has asked end-users how they perceive price and quality when comparing two different types of paper. Also interviews with one paper producer and two printing companies have been done to cover the professional aspect of customer value for the paper industry.  It has been clearly shown in this study that customers and companies inside the paper industry are agreeing in which customer values being most important, quality and price. The importance of being innovative was also stated by interviewed printing companies and the paper producer. The market survey was a good example of how innovation, from a paper producer, related to important customer values – perceived quality and perceived price – can create a potentially higher market share and profitability, instead of just lowering their prices and try to outlive their competitors.  The study has also contributed to see that companies inside the paper industry are conscious that they face tough competition from a more digitalized world. Even though the companies know that they face competition from the digital media the companies have a good understanding of which products they can continue to compete with and which products that digital media has the upper hand on.

After decades of digital developments, we are now entering a truly digital era. Digital information and communication technology has become a naturally embedded part ofthe designed environment we live in. Most parts of life are today pervaded by digital products and services. Evidence of such immersion can be noted in, for instance, media consumption. This development is gradually shaping and cultivating a media environment that is ubiquitous. Such ubiquity is manifested in media’s constant presence and thechanges in media consumption in the purview of digital innovation. Indeed, digital innovation is not only a shift in technology. It alters existing value networks and calls forrethinking existing value perceptions. While this disruptive change driven by digitizationcan be found in many industries, this thesis focuses on its impact on value networks in thenewspaper industry.The digitization of newspapers started with the introduction of the internet in the 90´sand soon emerged into new media innovations. While these new media innovations have not replaced existing media, they have been disruptive to newspaper value networks. Recently, the emergence of yet another digital innovation is specifically interesting whenstudying changes to value networks of the newspaper industry: the e-paper. This innovation (a screen technology very close to print on paper) exhibits inherent valuesthat make future replacement of print on paper a possibility. It is therefore regarded as avery promising technology in the newspaper industry. This thesis can be positioned at the intersection of the friction between forces to embarkon a new media trajectory and forces to hang on to the established structures andcontrol. The research question addressed in this thesis is: How are value networks of newspapers influenced by digital innovation? Addressing the research question, a multimethod approach was adopted to gain a broad understanding of how digital innovationinfluences value networks of newspapers. Drawing on digital innovation literature, the thesis presents a theoretical perspective with which to understand how digital innovation influences value networks. This perspective is instantiated as a model of value network configuration. The model emphasizes the multi-layered, dynamic, dialectic, and diametrical character of value networks in digital innovation. The model is offered as abasis and analytical tool to further explore value networks in digital innovation. This tool is useful for newspaper stakeholders when entering the digital era.

In our information age, it is of the highest importance that information is easy to understand by as many members of the potential target audience as possible. The present study analyses and compares the readability of 20 newspaper articles, half from the tabloid Daily Mail and the other half from the broadsheet The Daily Telegraph. The methods used to analyse the articles are mathematic readability formulas based on sentence and word length, as well as analyses of the use of the active and the passive voice, type-token ratio, number of clauses per sentence, and linking words. The results do not completely align with each other. Three of the five methods – the readability formulas, the use of the passive voice, and clauses per sentence – suggest that the Daily Mail articles are easier to understand, whereas the type-token ratios imply the opposite, and the linking words results did not show a difference in readability.

Trovärdighet är inte ett givet ting inom samhällets ramar. Det krävs en ömsesidig relationsuppbyggnad mellan parterna. Syftet var att belysa tidningsutgivarnas legitimitet i förhållande till innehållet i tidningen. Studien genomfördes med kvalitativ metod och avsåg två fallstudieobjekt, en morgontidning och en kvällstidning. Dessa var Göteborgs-Posten och Göteborgs-Tidningen. Teoretiska frågeställningar kring legitimitet var definitionen av legitimitet, påverkan, faktorer för hög respektive låg trovärdighet, nyhetsartiklarnas komponenter samt dagordningsfunktionen. Slutsatsen är att de båda fallstudieobjekten är legitima men på olika sätt. Ett gemensamt element är att varken dagstidningar eller kvällstidningar föreföll tro helt och fullt på "objektiv information".

 


Credibility is not a given thing in society. It requires a mutual relationship between the parties. The purpose of this study was to illuminate newspaper legitimacy in relation to media content. The study used a qualitative approach and comprised two case studies, one morning- newspaper and one evening paper, which were the Göteborgs-Posten and the Göteborgs-Tidningen. The main theoretical issues concerning legitimacy were the definitions of legitimacy, impacts, factors of high and low credibility, news components and agenda setting. The conclusion was that both newspapers shared a degree of legitimacy, but with different implications. Neither the morning nor the evening paper seemed to believe whole-heartedly in objective information.

Purpose/Aim: To investigate why people in the age group of 30-40 subscribe to the traditional morning newspaper even though they can get the same information at a much lower cost from for example TV, the internet or the free daily papers. The aim is to also look at possible future alternatives to the traditional morning newspaper.

Material/Method: Focus group interviews were used to gather the empirical material. These consisted of a total number of twelve people, divided into three groups. The results from the focus group interviews were analysed with help from established uses & gratifications theories and two diffusion theories.

Main results: This study shows that people read the traditional morning newspaper to get a good mixture of entertainment and local, national and global news. It is relaxing to read the newpaper on paper compared to reading it on the internet, mainly because you get a good overview which makes it a lot easier to find exactly want you want to read. The content of the newspaper is often discussed with family, friends and colleagues and can therefore be said to fill an important social function. Reading the newspaper is thought of to be intellectual and can help people form their identities. All respondents in this study grew up in homes which subscribed to a morning newspaper and thought this fact was a big reason for them finding it so important to have a subscription themselves. Even so, most of them were positively in favour of the so called e-paper, as a future alternative to the traditional newspaper, when discussed in the groups, mainly because of it being a more environmently friendly option, but also because of the ability to pick and choose your personal newspaper content and only pay for what you want to read.

Наведено основні вимоги до сировини та готової продукції. Розроблено та описано технологічну схему виробництва газетного паперу зниженої маси марки ПГ-1. Виконано розрахунки матеріального балансу води та волокна, а також теплового балансу контактного сушіння. Наведено теоретичні відомості про основні технологічні процеси. Наведено об’ємно-планувальне рішення будівлі цеху та заходи щодо охорони навколишнього середовища на підприємстві.
Graduation project: 87 p., 7 tab., 4 fig., 15 primary sources, 1 appendix The substantiation of the development of the technological flow for the production of newsprint in the system of an open joint-stock company "Zhidachivsky pulp and paper plant" with a productivity of 95 thousand tons/year is grounded. The basic requirements for raw materials and finished products are given. The technological scheme of production of the pressed paper of the lower mass PG-1 is developed and described. The calculations of the material balance of water and fibers, as well as the thermal balance of contact drying, have been fulfilled. Theoretical information about the main technological processes is given. The volume-planning decision of the building of the shop and measures on environmental protection at the enterprise are presented.

This paper analyses Velimir Khlebnikov’s early Pan-Slavic and anti-German ideological positions against the background of the Balkan crisis (1908, 1912) and the development of the Neo-Slavophile movement. Furthermore, we illustrate how Khlebnikov’s encounter with Janko Lavrin influenced his linguististic conceptions, which in 1913 led to the publication of a series of articles in the newspaper “Slavyanin”. Finally, we argue that some of these articles already showed a significant shift from his Neo-Slavophile ideas to a new conception, which turns towards the Eurasian continent as the arena for his utopian visions.

AbstractThrough reportage, media have played a key role in HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness in Uganda. Uganda’s success in reducing the percentage of HIV infection together with key supportive factors such as political will have been discussed internationally. Media have been credited with relaying information about HIV/AIDS to different groups of people in the public and acting as change agents. This study looks at media as key players in the HIV and AIDS prevention journey in Uganda and therefore seeks to investigate how two major newspaper outlets; New Vision and Daily Monitor framed the issue of HIV/AIDS—looking particularly at the who, between authority and none authority sources contributed most to the HIV/AIDS narrative as news stories’ sources. A quantitative content analysis was carried out of New Vision and Daily Monitor newspapers’ articles spanning 20 years of coverage. Results indicate that despite the important role played, media depended more on authority sources of information compared to none authority sources. This paper argues that lay people such as PLWHA or their caregivers have lived experiences which if shared, could affect the adoption of recommended HIV/AIDS preventive measures.

AbstractThe paper presents an exploratory research focused on the themes concerning Chinese Outbound Tourism to Switzerland in the period from January 2019 to June 2020 including the Covid-19 outbreak. It analyses news media articles from Swiss-German print media covering tourism coming from China, including a visit by 12’000 Chinese travelers – an event extensively covered within Switzerland due to its exceptional number – up to recent times in which non-European tourists are almost absent from the country. The research aims at identifying the main themes being voiced in newspaper articles. It also tackles the themes mentioned in user-generated comments on Facebook on the same articles.

This chapter chronicles the effort by white editors in South Carolina to battle northern public opinion supporting civil rights reform in the South. As the black community’s interpretations of public events received greater attention in the mainstream white press, Charleston editor Thomas R. Waring Jr. led the campaign to break through the so-called “paper curtain” that he claimed northern media used to silence the voices of white southerners who supported segregation. As 1960 approached, Waring and and political reporter William D. Workman Jr., worked to build a new political home for white racial conservatives in a revamped Republican Party. In 1962, Workman left journalism to run for the US Senate as a Republican. The effort failed narrowly, yet his campaign signaled the arrival of the conservative Republicans as a new force in Deep South politics.

This chapter details the rise of McCray’s Lighthouse and Informer newspaper. It chronicles the role of civil rights activists Modjeska Monteith Simkins and Osceola E. McKaine in persuading McCray to link his newspaper to the NAACP and the push for civil rights. McCray moves the newspaper to the state capital of Columbia and uses its statewide distribution to rally support for the NAACP and overcomew cautious accommodationism in the African-American community. The chapter provides a detailed look at the early days of the Lighthouse and Informer, when McCray’s paper pushed the boundaries of what a black newspaper could publish in a Deep South state. By 1945, the civil rights movement had gained traction and won a resounding victory: a court decision demanding equal pay for black and white public school teachers.

The introduction of digital tablets and the reduction in their price has meant that the newspaper publishing market has had to adapt itself to a new medium with a heretofore unseen different concept of design and use that is a hybrid between print content and a Web page. The aim of this comparative study is to investigate the reading experience of users in two different media: the print version of a newspaper and a rich PDF version of that newspaper distributed on the iPad. The study aims to contribute to the developing digital news industry with relevant findings regarding the features of current news applications. The study focuses on La Voz de Galicia, a regional daily newspaper with a circulation of more than one hundred thousand copies per day. In this study, we draw conclusions regarding the level of interactivity and multimedia content that the sample group demands from newspaper-related tablet applications, the difference in perception of the journalistic content based on whether the medium is paper or the iPad and the intent to purchase the product. This information is particularly relevant given that it has been obtained from future adults who within a few years will be in a context in which the trend in paid journalistic consumption will decrease while the penetration of tablets in the market will increase.

This chapter explores the nature, structure, and business of colonial newspapers in the 1770s. It explores how the concept of a “free press” was changing with the radicalization of American politics in the 1770s. Patriot political leaders, such as John Adams and Sam Adams, realized the power of print and were highly involved in shaping what news appeared in sympathetic newspapers. This chapter also shows how printers constructed their weekly newspapers, especially how they gathered news items, how they built the paper, and how it was disseminated throughout the countryside. It focuses specific attention on the Pennsylvania Journal, a patriot newspaper in Philadelphia, whose subscription books have survived.

This chapter contains conclusions and prescriptions for strengthening watchdog reporting. To that end, this chapter presents ten recommendations resulting from this research. These are directed to newspaper editors, as they are most likely to drive the changes needed to make public service journalism all that it can be. Any news organization implementing these recommendations would be able to produce more accountability reporting and more deep investigative and watchdog reporting than ever before. In addition, this chapter provides one more recommendation—this time directed at the readers: subscribe to the local paper. Even better: subscribe to both a local and a nationally focused newspaper, as spending money to support the work of newspapers is one of the best investments to improve one's quality of life and the quality of our democracy.

Aim/Purpose: This paper focuses on student newspapers in the midst of digital transfor-mation and the impact this has on their future survival. Background: The ramification of digital transformation on commercial newspapers is not new, but looking at it from a big picture helped to us to connect to what has been happening with student newspapers across the United States. Methodology: Through a limited review of selected student newspapers across the country, this paper attempted to identify key challenges, trends, and best practices to determine the current as well as future state of this media model. Contribution: The knowledge gained was then used to inform a transition of a specific stu-dent newspaper to cope with its own challenges and to share this condition with other schools around the nation. Findings: Due to the digital transformation, the traditional student newspapers have been disrupted and are going through the transition into digital platforms similar to those in the commercial newspapers. Yet, the value of the content is still important. Recommendations for Practitioners: Rapidly advanced technology transform student newspapers into a real-time, highly customized, personal, rich with multimedia format. This means the newspapers must be able to reach where their readers are and deliver what their readers ask for. Recommendation for Researchers: The transition of newspapers to be more digitized calls for more studies on the rise of new generation of readership, the relentless changes in technology, the search for a sustainable revenue model for e-newspaper, as well as issues in self-generated journalism. Impact on Society: As more people gain access to portable digital devices, the desire for hard copy newspapers that report yesterday’s news is rapidly decreasing. In today’s world, the news is instantaneous and the lag time between the event and it being reported is sometimes mere seconds. Future Research: Research on “fake news” is important as newspapers become more digitalized.

This topic will be discussed by the use of a precise e-newspaper implementation project called “ZeWIC”. ZeWIC is short for “Zeitung der Wirtschaftsinformatik in Clausthal”. It is a source of information for the students mostly for their study purposes at the Technical University of Clausthal. First there is some information given about electronic newspapers in general. Then ZeWIC is described, starting with the data model which forms the background of this special newspaper, and continuing with the particular implementation. This paper ends with a perspective about what can and will be changed or added soon to ZeWIC to improve ZeWIC’s service even more.

This paper is about the online newspaper industry and the organisational changes that have been necessitated by economic downturn and natural evolution. It explains how online newspapers were created as virtual organisations (VO) by publishers to protect valuable franchises and in the early stages of the technology boom were replicas of their traditional newspaper counterparts. It describes two VO structures that have applied during the online newspaper life cycle and the changes as economic pressures lead to de-structuring. This has resulted in convergence of publishing cultures with online and traditional disciplines working in a multi-skilling environment on two different products with similar content delivered through physical and electronic means. A model of the new working entity is provided. The paper concludes by raising cultural organisational issues relevant to a clash of journalistic disciplines.

[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: Little is known of the cultural competence or leadership styles of a minority owned newspaper. This autoethnography serves to benchmark one early 1990s example. Background: I focused on a series of flashbacks to observe an African American weekly newspaper editor-in-chief for whom I reported to 25 years ago. In my reflections I sought to answer these questions: How do minorities in entrepreneurial organizations view their own identity, their cultural competence? What degree of this perception is conveyed fairly and equitably in the community they serve? Methodology: Autoethnography using both flashbacks and article artifacts applied to the leadership of an early 1990s African American weekly newspaper. Contribution: Since a literature gap of minority newspaper cultural competence examples is apparent, this observation can serve as a benchmark to springboard off older studies like that of Barbarin (1978) and that by examining the leadership styles and editorial authenticity as noted by The Chicago School of Media Theory (2018), these results can be used for comparison to other such minority owned publications. Findings: By bringing people together, mixing them up, and conducting business any other way than routine helped the Afro-American Gazette, Grand Rapids, proudly display a confidence sense of cultural competence. The result was a potentiating leadership style, and this style positively changed the perception of culture, a social theory change example. Recommendations for Practitioners: For the minority leaders of such publications, this example demonstrates effective use of potentiating leadership to positively change the perception of the quality of such minority owned newspapers. Recommendations for Researchers: Such an autoethnography could be used by others to help document other examples of cultural competence in other minority owned newspapers. Impact on Society: The overall impact shows that leadership at such minority owned publications can influence the community into a positive social change example. Future Research: Research in the areas of culture competence, leadership, within minority owned newspapers as well as other minority alternative publications and websites can be observed with a focus on what works right as well as examples that might show little social change model influence. The suggestion is to conduct the research while employed if possible, instead of relying on flashbacks.

Web-based online newspapers have become a very popular way to share information as well as to allow users to comment news and each other's comments. In such environments some users play a prominent role and eventually influence other users thus leading discussions as they please. So far, there is no way of identifying and quantifying such influence. This paper proposes and analyzes a methodology for identifying influential users that builds implicit social networks upon users who post comments in the same news, suggests three different ways of identifying influential users and measures influence based on similarity of comments. We applied it to data collected from a Brazilian online newspaper and results confirm its effectiveness by revealing a significant similarity between comments of identified influential users and the remaining ones.

When freedom from Communism largely eliminated overt government censorship of newspapers, other political and business pressures appeared. Consequently, Southeastern European newspaper publishers faced threats to financial viability and editorial integrity. The editor-in-chief of one newspaper in the former Yugoslavian republic of Slovenia claims to have found freedom from political and advertiser influence after a global media conglomerate invested in the publication. Notably, the business daily Finance is the only hard-news start-up to survive in the eleven years since Slovenia gained independence from the Republic of Yugoslavia. This research paper offers a provocative example where international investment appears to have contributed to the democratizing of media in a post-communist society. The paper is not intended to argue that foreign media investments are necessarily beneficial but to suggest some circumstances in which foreign media investment can be advantageous to the democratic aspirations of a society.

This paper aims to analyse the use of evaluative adjectival lexicogrammatical patterns in selected British online newspaper discourse in terms of genre specification. It focuses both on the normalised frequency of the patterns as well as on the evaluative semantic groups of the adjectives embedded in the patterns analysed. The genres chosen for the analysis are politics and crime. 282 articles from six national British online newspapers (the Sun, the Mirror, the Express, the Guardian, the Telegraph, and the Independent) were downloaded to create the corpus. These were then analysed via Sketch Engine for the evaluative adjectival patterns introduced by Bednarek (2009). The adjectives found in the patterns were further examined and manually divided into semantic groups introduced by Collins COBUILD. The data were then compared in an attempt to identify discourse patterns and contrasts, and valuable insights were gained into the lexicogrammatical features studied. The analysis indicated that evaluative adjectival patterns are indeed embedded in newspaper stories and both the tabloids and the broadsheets employ these patterns more or less equally for the same genres. Both types of newspaper mainly embed patterns ‘v-link ADJ’ and ‘v-link ADJ prep’ in both genres. However, when broadsheets report on politics, the use of the 'it v-link ADJ finite/non-finite' pattern, can be considered marked.

Electronic publishing has a particularly significant application as a graphic product in the publication of some products such as books and newspapers that have traditionally been essential products of newspaper printing, book printing and the like. In the electronic publication of newspapers, there are certain templates that are related to the identity of the publisher. There is a number of published and printed editions of newspapers that were published before the introduction of electronic editions. Newspapers stick to tradition and try to transfer printed editions to electronic ones, that is, to do the so-called digitalization. The process of digitization is a complex and extensive work consisting of analysis and proper preparation of the transformation into a bit of a mapped image with the help of reproduction devices, rearranging and arranging data with OCR software, creating metadata, database management and web application development. As current products of graphic production, multimedia appears as a set of different media that affect the human senses. Procedures for digitalization of graphic products with essential elements are necessary, and various software tools are needed for the realization of the process. This paper points out the most important segments of previously mentioned procedures.

In 1975 employment in the majority of trades’ areas was dominated by men, and this fact, associated with a significant wage disparity, generated considerable social debate at that time. A number of newspaper articles in New Zealand highlighted the lack of female participation in traditionally male occupations. Using an intensive literature review and statistical analysis of available records, this paper investigates whether the numbers of women employed as plumbers in New Zealand have changed between 1975 and the present day. Having established that the proportion of female plumbers is almost unchanged during this period, this research then compares this information with data gathered from other trades and exposes the widespread nature of this trend across traditionally male dominated industries. This data is also compared to gender-based employment rates in the non-trades professions. The potential causes underlying this tendency are discussed. Finally the paper reflects on what, if anything, could to be done to alter this situation.

Using an intensive literature review and statistical analysis of available records, this paper investigates whether the numbers of women employed as plumbers in New Zealand have changed between 1975 and the present day. Having established that the proportion of female plumbers is almost unchanged during this period, this research then compares this information with data gathered from other trades and exposes the widespread nature of this trend across traditionally male dominated industries. This data is also compared to gender-based employment rates in the non-trades professions. The potential causes underlying this tendency are discussed. Finally the paper reflects on what, if anything, could to be done to alter this situation.
