The lives of two women and three men in antebellum Massachusetts and New Hampshire demonstrate that genealogical practices buttressed class distinctions and that genealogists researched lineages that best fit their definitions of propriety. Documented seventeenth-century lineages constituted social capital. Yet genealogy showed also that class could be made as well as inherited.

Based on the specimens housed primarily in the University of New Hampshire Insect Collection (UNH) and the Canadian National Collection (CNC), we present here a comprehensive faunal review of aleocharine beetles of the state and provide new distribution and natural history data. We report 252 species from New Hampshire belonging to some 74 genera in 15 tribes; 159 of these constitute new New Hampshire state records (NSR), of which 37 (excluding new species and including 1 New York record) constitute new country distribution records (NCR) for the USA. In addition, we provide 36 new state records for ME, with 5 of these species not yet known from NH, seven new state records for MA, two new state records for PA and VT, and one each for CT, DE, MI, NC, NY (also a NCR), OH, and OK. One new genus, Belladonna Klimaszewski and Chandler is erected, and nine species are described as new to science (alphabetical order): Agaricomorpha hampshirensis Klimaszewski and Chandler, sp. n., Atheta ellisi Klimaszewski and Chandler sp. n, Atheta monroe Klimaszewski and Chandler, sp. n., Atheta struyvei Klimaszewski and Chandler sp. n, Belladonna barryi Klimaszewski and Chandler, sp. n., Belladonna fortieri Klimaszewski and Chandler, sp. n., Colusa smetanai Klimaszewski and Chandler, sp. n., Philhygra pinkhami Klimaszewski and Chandler sp. n., and P. pseudomagniceps Klimaszewski and Chandler, sp. n. Undescribed females of Aleochara daviesi Klimaszewski and Brunke, and Silusa langori Klimaszewski, are described and illustrated. Illustrations of Atheta (Tetropla) tubericauda Bernhauer are provided for the first time, based on a male from New Hampshire. A new combination is proposed for Atheta (Dimetrota) mcalpinei Klimaszewski and Webster.

For the past 80 years, social scientists have been linking historical censuses across time to study economic and geographic mobility. In recent decades, the quantity of historical census record linkage has exploded, owing largely to the advent of new machine-readable data created by genealogical organizations. Investigators are examining economic and geographic mobility across multiple generations and also engaging many new topics. Several analysts are exploring the effects of early-life socioeconomic conditions, environmental exposures, or natural disasters on family, health, and economic outcomes in later life. Other studies exploit natural experiments to gauge the impact of policy interventions such as social welfare programs and educational reforms. The new data sources have led to a proliferation of record linkage methodologies, and some widespread approaches inadvertently introduce errors that can lead to false inferences. A new generation of large-scale shared data infrastructure now in preparation will ameliorate weaknesses of current linkage methods.

Abstract Meteorological observations have been taken continuously at the summit of Mount Washington since 1932. Results of an analysis of the air temperature record over the 1935–2003 period show a statistically significant increase in mean temperature of ∼0.3°C, while the diurnal temperature range has decreased by ∼0.15°C. The decadal structure evident in the record reveals that, in contrast to North American trends, the summit experienced relatively cool temperatures in the 1940s. The late 1980s and early 1990s were relatively warm on the summit, in agreement with North American decadal trends. The times of daily maximum and minimum temperatures show that the summit climate is dominantly influenced by boundary layer processes 30% of the time and free air circulation 50% of the time. No evidence of a “weekend effect” was found.

Modern nationalisms first arose during the later eighteenth century around the wide periphery of the ancient heartland of western culture and gnawed their way inward during the course of the nineteenth century to the core, culminating in World War I, Each new nationalism generated an original “imagined community” of human beings, part of whose ideological cohesion derived from a sense of shared historical experience. Since the actual historical record would not necessarily satisfy this hunger, it was often found expedient to amend the past through acts of imagination aptly termed the “invention of tradition.”One of the many new “imagined communities” of the long nineteenth century took shape in the northern Nile-valley Sudan between the final disintegration of the old kingdom of Sinnar (irredeemable after the death of the strongman Muhammad Abu Likaylik in 1775) and the publication of Harold MacMichael's A History of the Arabs in the Sudan in 1922. The new national community born of the collapse of Sinnar, strongly committed to Arabic speech and Islamic faith, was tested by fire through foreign conquest and revolution, by profound socio-economic transformation, and by the challenges attendant on participation in an extended sub-imperialism that earned it hegemony—first cultural, and ultimately political—over all the diverse peoples of the modern Sudan. One important response of the nascent community to the trials of this difficult age was the invention of a new national historical tradition, according to which its members were descended via comparatively recent immigrants to the Sudan from eminent Arabs of Islamic antiquity.

Abstract. Multi-year time series records of C2-C6 alkanes, C2-C4 alkenes, ethyne, isoprene, C6-C8 aromatics, trichloroethene (C2HCl3), and tetrachloroethene (C2Cl4) from canister samples collected during January 2004–February 2008 at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) AIRMAP Observatory at Thompson Farm (TF) in Durham, NH are presented. The objectives of this work are to identify the sources of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and halocarbons observed at TF, characterize the seasonal and interannual variability in ambient mixing ratios and sources, and estimate regional emission rates of NMHCs. Analysis of correlations and comparisons with emission ratios indicated that a ubiquitous and persistent mix of emissions from several anthropogenic sources is observed throughout the entire year. The highest C2-C8 anthropogenic NMHC mixing ratios were observed in mid to late winter. Following the springtime minimums, the C3-C6 alkanes, C7-C8 aromatics, and C2HCl3 increased in early to mid summer, presumably reflecting enhanced evaporative emissions. Mixing ratios of C2Cl4 and C2HCl3 decreased by 0.7±0.2 and 0.3±0.05 pptv/year, respectively, which is indicative of reduced usage and emissions of these halogenated solvents. Emission rates of C3-C8 NMHCs were estimated to be 109 to 1010 molecules cm-2 s-1 in winter 2006. The emission rates extrapolated to the state of New Hampshire and New England were ~2–60 Mg/day and ~12–430 Mg/day, respectively. The 2002 and 2005 EPA National Emissions Inventory (NEI) emission rates of benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes for New Hampshire agreed within ±<5–20% of the emission rates estimated from the TF data, while toluene emissions were overestimated (20–35%) in both versions of the NEI.

This thesis consists of four sections, each a stand-alone body of work intended for publication in international journals. The sections are ordered such that they progress in a logical fashion; the first two sections form an introduction to the new analytical techniques developed and utilised within this thesis, the remaining two sections present data and geological interpretations derived from the application of these techniques. Volume 1 contains the text and reference list, whilst Volume 2 contains the figures and appendices. Section A describes the technique of garnet isopleth thermobarometry, and outlines methods for analysing the relative contributions of the sources of error inherent to this technique. Additionally, some insights into the significance of common compositional variations within garnet are provided and discussed. Section B describes a method for calculating the changes in composition of the chemical system from which garnet is growing that are caused by crystal fractionation of garnet. This section has been published in The Journal of Metamorphic Geology (Evans, 2004), and is presented here unchanged. Section C utilises the methods described in the first two sections to determine a metamorphic history for the Garnet Hill and Salmon Hole Brook synclines of central western New Hampshire, USA. The thermal regime of the region during metamorphism was found to be characterised by localised, transient thermal heterogeneities. Two distinct episodes of metasomatism were also defined. Section D utilises the methods described in the first two sections to test a previously defined relative timing scheme for porphyroblast growth that was based on Foliation Intersection Axes preserved within porphyroblast (FIA). Additionally, a tectonic model for central western New Hampshire is presented that explains several key geological features of the region that contradict many of the existing tectonic models.

James G. Dana was a politically attuned attorney and experienced newspaper editor. His paper had once owned the contract to publish the acts and journals of the state legislature. Dana was one of many educated easterners who immigrated to Kentucky to find their fortunes in the professions and in politics. The New Hampshire–born Dana maintained a law office in Frankfort while he edited the Commentator, the unabashed defender of the Old Court and Henry Clay, as well a spirited adversary of Amos Kendell’s Western Argus and the presidential ambitions of Andrew Jackson. In 1833 Dana would combine his two professions and begin his service as reporter of the Court of Appeals, eventually producing nine high-quality volumes.

After his experience compiling a world history and composing various theological works, Rashid al-Din returned to the Blessed History of Ghazan and applied new ideas to the text and to its presentation. These included new ways to represent genealogical relationships, the inclusion of a series of illustrations, and a new imperative about the reproduction and preservation of the text. This chapter traces these changes, as well as a series of textual additions and modifications made to the dynastic history. Some of these modifications were the work of Rashid al-Din himself, while others were the product of early copyists and editors leaving their mark on the historical record. This chapter reconstructs the order of these modifications and demonstrates their impact on the historical record.

Abstract AS David Souter Entered the second half of his first decade on the Supreme Court, his record became part of the 1996 presidential election campaign. Republican Senator Robert Dole, who would go down to defeat in a challenge to President Bill Clinton that year, selected New Hampshire governor Steven Merrill to chair his campaign. Both Dole and Merrill were opponents of abortion rights. But in an appearance on Meet the Press as the New Hampshire presidential primary approached, the governor defended Souter’s appointment to the Court by a GOP president, despite the justice’s reaffirmation of Roe v. Wade’s essence in the Casey plurality opinion. Terming Souter the “kind of justice that I would hope President Dole would appoint, from an intellectual point of view,” Merrill professed “enormous respect” for Souter. While conceding that they disagreed on the abortion issue “perhaps...more than I initially realized that we did,” he also contended that a court candidate’s abortion stance should not be a “litmus test” for judicial fitness. Instead, said Merrill, “we ought to use a litmus test of quality and integrity and intellectual substance, and certainly David Souter has those.” The governor also defended Dole’s Senate votes supporting President Clinton’s nomination of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, two abortion supporters, to the Court.

This chapter examines the two newer versions of the Bodhidharma family in the context of the three preceding Bodhidharma narratives. In these two early genealogical texts—Faru's biography from Shaoli Monastery and Du Fei's Record—there is solid evidence for thinking that the increasing clout of the fictive Bodhidharma family was, in fact, the result of a series of authors reworking prior literary statements in sly and careful ways. In particular, the narrator of Faru's biography, while clearly combining and editing earlier accounts of the various masters, figured out how to stage his new claims so that they would appear to have been already known and endorsed throughout the empire. Likewise, Du Fei masterfully undermined the earlier Bodhidharma narratives regarding: the centrality of transmitting the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra; the teaching of “wall-contemplation” and the Two Entrances; and the claim that Huike lost his arm to bandits.

Abstract The Only Sounds That Penetrated the silence at the MacDowell Colony were the sounds of nature. One morning soon after Beach’s arrival at the colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, that first summer of 1921, one of nature’s sounds was so insistent that she stopped her work to have a conversation-with “a most voluble thrush.” A longtime collector of bird songs, she decided to record his “lonely but appealing” music. “I took the songs down at the bird’s dictation, and oh, how hard I worked!” she said, “Even the most expert stenographer would have had difficulty keeping up with him! I took them exactly, even as to key (except for a few intervals too small to be transcribed) and rewrote and corrected as he sang them over and over. Then I played them back to him and he would answer.” Out of his songs Beach then fashioned “A Hermit Thrush at Eve” and “A Hermit Thrush at Morn,” op. 92, among her most original and successful piano pieces. Soon thereafter Beach played the “Hermit Thrush” pieces for fellow colonists, first telling the story of her morning’s conversation. The hermit thrush became Beach’s metaphor for the MacDowell Colony, a place where she could hear her own musical thoughts, could “learn a little more than what she knew” to quote the poet, friend, and fellow colonist Edwin Arlington Robinson. It was “through the innermost silence,” Beach wrote, that we receive communication “from some source outside ourselves.”4 The colony also offered her a place to heal after the wrenching early deaths of Ethel Clement and Arthur Hyde, to work through her grief in her music, and to find respite from concern over her aunt’s deteriorating condition.
