The beginning of the twentieth century marked in China the emergence of “youth” (qingnian) as a distinct analytical category associated with national modernity. As the term qingnian assumed unprecedented significance, a new generation of educated youth aware of its role as agent of social change also came into being. In fact, the May Fourth movement turned Chinese youth into a social force that could be organized and mobilized for effective action by nascent ideologically committed political parties. The historical analysis of the Socialist/Communist Youth League, the Chinese Communist Party-affiliated youth organization, is rather biased, as official historiography tends to overemphasize its role as well as the symbiotic nature of its relationship with the Party. Moreover, so far Western scholars have carried out little work on the topic. This paper makes use of largely unexploited documentary material to reconstruct the history of the Youth League from its inception to its disbandment on the eve of the Sino-Japanese war, and to show how the League interacted with the party’s development in the early stage of the Communist movement. It argues that, in a political context of contestation over power, it was mainly conceived as a tool for Communist propaganda and mobilization of mass support. Yet, the League’s relationship with the party was not always one of symbiosis and subordination.

AbstractThe New Left that arose in West Germany during the 1960s mimicked the antifascist reformations of the 1930s. For grassroots campaigns, extraparliamentary opposition groups, and radical student organizations of the postwar decades, the Marxist humanist theories and revolutionary socialist splinter groups of the interwar years served as attractive models. At the same time, the Sixty-eighter generation rebelled against a political establishment now represented by that earlier generation of neoleftist pioneers, their parents. But generational conflict was just the symptom of a deeper problem in the history of the midcentury Left: a succession of radical new lefts arose out of periodic frustration at institutionalized politics. This article explores the missing link between Germany’s antifascist and antiauthoritarian new lefts: the so-called left socialists of the 1950s. In particular, Ossip K. Flechtheim’s science of futurology and Wolfgang Abendroth’s theory of antagonistic society translated antifascism’s legacies into a new paradigm of social protest. The left socialists’ support for the embattled Socialist German Student League laid the organizational and intellectual foundation for the sixties New Left. Recent studies of the “global sixties” have shown the transnational connections between new lefts across space; this article explains their continuity across time.

The advent of online advertising has drastically changed how football is approached and funded. No doubt, Information and Communication Technology has had huge impact on sports development across the globe and also has created new vista for sports promotion, marketing, sports followership and revenue generation. This study examines the influence of online advertising in the promotion of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). The technological determinism theory was used as theoreti-cal basis for this research work. Survey method of research was adopted with four hundred copies of questionnaire administered to respondents in four States in the North- Central zone of Nigeria namely; Niger, Kogi, Benue and FCT. It was found that the extent of online advertising usage by the League Management Company (LMC) and NPFL club sides is poor in compare to its usage by other league organizers and club sides in advanced nations. Therefore, this study recommends that the league han-dlers should, immediately, consider setting up a fully equipped social media marketing team. This should include; web designers, graphic artists, online media influencers and advert executives. The LMC should also ensure the employment of professional web designers to revamp the look-and-feel of the site. Make it more user-friendly and updated constantly. Also, the website should be fully commercialized.

In our opinion, the most important event at the Twenty-fifth International Conference of the Red Cross was its adoption of the new Statutes and Rules of Procedure of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. These new texts are the outcome of a suggestion by the League and almost four years of negotiation with the ICRC. They set out guidelines for the Movement for the span of at least a generation, and the fact that they have been adopted by consensus is a guarantee of their soundness and their durability.

This article reintroduces the League of Nations Secretariat as a fundamentally significant object of historical study. By drawing on key insights from three generations of historiography on the Secretariat, the authors explore how historians can use a Bourdieusian conceptual framework to study this first major international administrative body. Each generation of literature has emphasized one of three professional archetypes – the bureaucrat, the diplomat and the technocrat. Moving beyond these archetypes, and applying Antoine Vauchez's concept of ‘weak fields’ and the notions of import, brokering capacity and hybridity, we see how the professional templates that were being imported into the Secretariat were culturally specific (mainly to Britain and Northern Europe) and how they were merged and reinvented to secure the smooth running of a multilateral, multinational and multivalent organization given charge of a series of new functions, thus producing new, specific forms of expertise exclusive to the Secretariat. Accordingly, we capture both the complexities of what kind of professional cultures came to dominate the Secretariat and the novelty of some of the types of expertise it rested upon: an important step towards a deeper understanding of the characteristics and role of international public administration in international politics in the twentieth century.

This paper presents an embedded control architecture constructed for Robo-Erectus, a soccer-playing humanoid robot developed at the Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Control Centre of Singapore Polytechnic. The Robo-Erectus team has participated in the KidSize category of RoboCup's Humanoid League since 2002, collecting different awards. The latest version of Robo-Erectus has many capabilities that can be exploited to improve the robot's behavior. The new embedded controller has made possible the first stage of the performance (displayed during RoboCup 2007), including network communication, mapping, and localization. The new mechanical, electronic design, embedded control architecture, and control schemes are described in this paper. In addition to the hardware, the paper presents details of the modules for gait generation, vision, behavior control, and communication.

The goal of this study was to prepare a practical strategy that can help the successful settlement of the Asian quota system and the success and development of Korean professional volleyball. Through in-depth interviews, participants were asked to respond about the expected effects of the introduction of the Asian quota, and the results were derived using content analysis and keyword analysis. The research results can be summarized as follows: (1) in the keyword analysis of expected effects, keywords such as performance improvement, competitiveness, fandom, profit generation, globalization, and the Korean wave of volleyball were frequently appeared. (2) Regarding the introduction of the Asian quota system, the participants showed a positive attitude rather than a negative attitude, and said that the Asian quota system would improve the league's performance and competitiveness. (3) Participants expected that a new fan base would flow into Korean professional volleyball and a fandom would be formed due to the player selected for the Asian Quota. (4) The introduction of the Asian quota could generate additional revenue for the V-League and clubs and would be of financial help. (5) The Asian Quota can play a role as a medium for the integration of Korean multicultural society and the development and growth of the Korean volleyball agent system was also identified. Based on the results, Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) will have to carry out marketing for the expansion of the V-League into the Asian market, using the introduction of the Asian quota system as a stepping stone. We hope that Korean professional volleyball will become the central axis of Korean sports through KOVO's global marketing including the Asian Quota.

Mountain hikes in the service of the education of a “new” man in the interwar periodAfter the end of the First World War and rebirth of the Polish state, one of the most important objectives in visions of social education was the formation of a lasting system of moral concepts of Poles, a system that was the basis of constructing a “new” citizen. Inspirations for actions undertook by Polish teachers and tutors, which were to bring about a strengthening of values like patriotism, freedom, friendship, tolerance, respect for work, were ideas promoted by national and international organisations, e.g. League of Nations, International League of New Education, Society of Teachers from Schools and Higher Education Institutions, Polish Teachers’ Union or youth organisations of e.g. scouts. Methods of upbringing described in Polish pedagogical literature and applied in practice, which were appreciated by European scholars, included various forms of working with students outside school. These included excursions, trips, hiking camps, also in the mountains. The value of being in the mountains, the effort involved in climbing them, the need to educate a generation of young tourists respecting the natural environment were discussed in guides for tutors, teachers, regional studies specialists, and in the tourist press. The author examines selected publications, primarily tourist press addressed to young readers Orli Lot, Młody Krajoznawca Śląski, Młody Taternik in order to reconstruct the means used to functionalise the topic of mountain hikes in the interwar period.

To understand how the Y-Generation R&D people weigh the importance about non-compensation variables when they decide to leave a company and to find out the intensity about the non-compensation factors and employee relationship, we interviewed 6 young engineers in depth. All of these sample employees were born after 1971, worked for 2 years in the company and ranked top 45% among the colleagues. Hopefully, our findings will pinpoint some key factors in the non-compensation aspect and help to keep a low turnover rate by improving the employee relationship in general. In sum, our studies found: 1. When considering leaving a company, the top three non-compensation factors for the interviewees are “poor leadership”, “lighthearted commitment and communication” and “lukewarm relationship in between managers and employees”. 2. When the above problems happened, they tended not to initiate but wishfully expected the managers to smell something wrong and communicate with them first. Without exception, they hanged on in the pressure cooker until passing a threshold to head for the road of no return. 3. Through the interview, we confirm that the compensation factors still play a critical role in determining whether an employee will leave or stay. Using Excel correlation analysis, we found the correlation coefficient in between the non-compensation factors and employee relationship is 0.21132, a positive but weak relationship.

The Chinese Communist Youth League is the largest youth political organization in the world, with over 80 million members. Former Chinese President Hu Jintao was a firm supporter of the League, and believed that it could play a bigger role in winning the hearts and minds of Chinese youth by actively engaging with their interests and demands. Accordingly, he provided the League with a new youth work mandate to increase its capacity for responsiveness under the slogan 'keep the Party assured and the youth satisfied'. This original investigation of the hitherto-unexamined organization uses a combination of interviews, surveys and ethnography to explore how the League implemented Hu's mandate at both local and national levels, exposing the contradictory nature of some of its campaigns. By doing so, it also sheds light on the reasons for Xi Jinping's turn against the League during his first term in office. The Chinese Communist Youth League: Juniority and Responsiveness in a Party Youth Organization develops the original concept of 'juniority' to capture the complex ways that generational power is institutionalized, alienating young people from official political processes, with significant implications for China's political development. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of Chinese politics, as well as to scholars of comparative youth politics and sociology.

But during the twenty years of Fascism, especially after the anti-Jewish laws but even before, professionals, students and scholars, including foreigners, expatriated alone or with families for political and racial reasons to the Americas, England, Mandatory Palestine, Switzerland. It is a limited but important phenomenon of brain drain, which in the case of Italy has yet to be investigated. Who were the people who decided to leave in search of freedom, work, and then salvation, and what did they do? Their names and stories were cancelled. This work attempts to reconstruct their lives thanks to foreign archives, letters, scattered memories and hundreds of photos. What difficulties did they face in their host countries? How many of them returned? The stories speak of devastating losses to the detriment of the country, of responsibilities and injustices, but also of resources and talents of Italian culture, of commitment and determination. This 2nd edition contains some new features, improves consultation with research functions and, as regards content, it enhances family mobility from a generational and gender perspective. The project was promoted by the University of Florence and has been supported by the Regione Toscana and by various institutes, with the sponsorship of the New York Public Library; Council for At-Risk Academics, London; J. This chapter discusses the proliferation of baseball in Seattle—another point of entry for the Japanese coming to the Americas in the late nineteenth century. The Seattle Japanese community was very active in its athletic endeavors and incorporated baseball as a means to display the virtues of the second generation to those in Japan. Thus, boxer-turned-journalist James Sakamoto sought to unify this community into an athletic union—the Courier Athletic League—which drew its membership from a variety of institutions; such as Buddhist and Christian churches, YMCAs, and Japanese-language schools. Following the lead of the ambitious and patriotic Sakamoto, the new league officials constructed athletics around the notion that Courier League sports would be those distinctively “American.”

This chapter examines the unprecedented growth in activity and the coalescence of women's local and regional clubs in the early 1890s, a period that also saw Fannie Barrier Williams increase her reform activities in the black community and with the black women who had come to her aid. It begins with a discussion of Barrier Williams' involvement in the women's equality movement, citing in particular her membership in the Colored Women's League in Chicago that ushered in what she later referred to as the beginnings of “a reformatory movement” created entirely by women. It then considers how the push for political equality linked club women in Chicago to black club women across the country, along with Barrier Williams' belief in the ballot as a means of maintaining and improving black women's constitutional rights as well as her belief in black women's role in guiding the progress of the race in the new century. The chapter shows how Barrier Williams emerged as a leading representative and promoter of reforms and women's activism in the West/Midwest.

This chapter documents the league's continued efforts at expansion. Although some of the eight franchises were still struggling to earn sufficient revenues, the NBA's stability and the success of its twenty-four-second shot clock encouraged NBA owners. Some began considering relocating their teams to larger cities. Their improved product on the court and growing prosperity spurred other businesspeople to begin seeking teams of their own, leading to increases in franchise values and demands for expansion teams. Moreover, new players from this generation were elevated to nigh-legendary status among pro basketball fans. The league's general stability and incipient prosperity also bolstered player salaries and emboldened players to seek more rights.

This chapter discusses the history of drug use in Major League Baseball (MLB). It begins with Twentieth-Century Fox's baseball fantasy It Happens Every Spring, the story of a nerdy chemistry professor, and diehard baseball fanatic, who relies on a secret chemical formula in order to moonlight as a phenom pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. The problem with the film was that it was “the story of a cheat, winning a pennant and a World's Championship series.” In real-life baseball, cheating has quite a long history. This chapter examines the emergence of a generation of pioneering trainers and team doctors who introduced new methods to ease pain, spur healing, and enhance the performance of baseball players, including the injection of tranquilizers and the use of amphetamines. It also considers the case of Sandy Koufax and the league's refusal to admit that there was a doping problem in the sport; in short, baseball players did not use drugs.

Communist Upbringing under Stalin: Young Communists and War in a Socialist Society, 1929-1945 examines Stalinist mass youth culture in the period of the Great Terror and World War II. For the Bolsheviks, youth were the “new people” who would someday build communism. Despite Stalinist assertions that the country was marching inexorably toward communism, though, there was no blueprint for raising a socialist generation. “Communist upbringing”—the program of moral socialization of the Young Communist League (Komsomol)—absorbed the violent atmosphere of the 1930s and 1940s. Even as it surrounded them with violence, Stalin’s regime provided young people with opportunities, shaping socialist youth culture and socialism more broadly through the threat and experience of war.

Victorious Allied governments legitimized wartime sacrifice with promises of domestic prosperity and a peaceful international order. An American-sponsored League of Nations would mediate relations between liberal-democratic nation states. However, although parliamentary government was consolidated across north-western Europe, the peace fell short, failing to accommodate Bolshevik Russia or reach a legitimate settlement with a new and fragile German democracy. Paris deemed the settlement inadequate; the US Congress refused to ratify the German treaty and remained outwith the League; China and Japan were estranged by blatant European racialism and colonialism. All of Europe struggled to restore economic life and eastern Europe experienced famine. Rather than parliamentary democracy, militarist and oligarchic regimes eventually took power across this region, where societies remained largely pre-industrial and ethnically unstable. In Italy, a new authoritarian, militaristic mass movement, fascism, took power, providing an early model of sorts for Hitler’s National Socialists. However, the League of Nations survived and, generations later, liberal democracy has consolidated across Europe.

Traditionally, fascism in Britain has been seen in fairly narrow terms as a phenomenon of the 1930s associated with Sir Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists (BUF). This approach to the subject made it easy to account for the fortunes of fascism as a movement essentially marginal to British society and thus of limited significance. The Union Movement that Mosley founded in 1948 campaigned for imperial control of Africa, a united Europe, and an end to coloured immigration. But this did not amount to a full fascist programme; the movement found itself caught halfway between the conventional parties and the racist fringe. AbstractDuring the coronavirus crisis, educational activities and nearly all social contact with friends and family were conducted via online communication tools. Such tools can only be used effectively if an individual has suitable internet access. Thankfully, the Netherlands is one of the EU leaders when it comes to Next Generation Access (NGA) coverage, with 98% of Dutch households having access to these high-speed connections; this is well above the USA (94%) and EU (87%) averages. However, this still means that nearly 344,000 individuals living in the Netherlands lack a strong internet connection. Here, we contend that the coronavirus crisis, and especially the associated lockdown wherein individuals were strongly encouraged to not leave their homes, has made it clear that high-speed internet access is a necessary good for modern social living.

AbstractThe article deals with the environmental dimension of migrations. It takes as a case study the migration of Poles after 1945 that took place due to the post-war redrawing of political borders in Central Europe. Massive displacement of the populations, who were forced to leave towns and villages that they had inhabited for generations, resulted in disruptions of bonds with the natural environment and the domesticated landscape. The ways of dealing with this rupture and the ways of domesticating the new landscapes and natural environments are key problems discussed here. This analysis helps to better appreciate the environmental dimension of the 21st migrations we increasingly observe today.

AbstractIreland is a country with a generous citizenship offering but restricted external voting rights. The first (or emigrant) generation lose the right to vote eighteen months after departure; other non-resident citizens, including those in Northern Ireland (NI) are currently ineligible to vote. In November 2020 the Irish Government committed to holding a referendum which if passed, would give all Irish citizens, resident and non-resident the right to vote in Presidential elections. This chapter, based on interviews with people born in the UK and Northern Ireland who acquired Irish passports following the UK’s referendum to leave the European Union considers the topic of Irish external voting through the lens of these new passport holders, exploring their relationship to political participation in the Republic of Ireland.

AbstractIn our globalized world access to rock art sites is unprecedented. But despite awareness campaigns, education about the universal value of rock art, global media attention and the efforts of those who manage rock art sites, purposeful damage to rock art imagery and the landscapes it is a part of continues at an alarming rate. There are many reasons for this, including ignorance, indifference, iconoclasm, racism, political motivations, and economic priorities. It also has been observed that ‘marks attract marks’ so for some people there is a compulsion to leave one’s own mark at rock art sites because previous people have done so. Indeed, new graffiti at rock art sites, unless quickly removed, can soon lead to a growing number of incidents. To further complicate things, Indigenous interactions with rock art sites can sometimes lead to new mark making construed by others as a form of vandalism. After summarizing why rock art is important in today’s globalized digital world, the history of purposeful damage to rock art sites is briefly reviewed before recent case studies from Australia and elsewhere are discussed. New strategies for preventing graffiti and vandalism at rock art sites, are then outlined. It is concluded that our global rock art heritage needs to be valued as a part of living culture rather than archaeological artefact in order to best conserve it for future generations.

AbstractElectrification systems in the railway field have evolved over time, adapting to the new needs that have arisen as technology advanced. The applicable standards seem to leave the systems in which the overhead contact rail is implemented so far in the background, resulting in references to it that are clearly insufficient, even in the most recent revisions of technical requirements. Simulation tools allow a path for the development of studies related to the contact dynamics between pantograph and contact line, focused mainly on improving the exploitation capacities while guaranteeing a correct quality in the process of the current collection. This work contains a procedure for generating a simulation tool. The results are mainly focused on the rigid electrification system and represent a broad knowledge base to introduce a multitude of challenges when it comes to improving the capacity of these railway facilities under operational conditions, to improve the strategies of maintenance and to calculate the life cycle. It can also be verified that the standards applicable to this environment makes possible to clearly identify the fields on which research efforts can be focused, so that a common framework can be established for all the agents involved from the design to the operational phase. AbstractThis chapter presents an agenda for deep reform of international economic governance and cooperation based on the human-centred logic of placing the bottom-line measure of national economic progress, broad progress in living standards, rather than GDP growth at the heart of international macroeconomic policy cooperation; the international financial architecture; and international trade and technology governance. This twenty-first century renovation of the international economic architecture is based on a “Roosevelt Consensus” model of growth and development that emphasizes the social contract's crucial role in advancing inclusion, sustainability and resilience. Major reforms are proposed to IMF and World Bank macroeconomic policy analysis and advice, including debt sustainability methodology; and international development and climate finance, through the tripling of ODA-related external flows to more than 80 of the poorest countries in each of the next seven years, including for the purpose of retiring and replacing most of the world’s coal-fired power-generating capacity over the next 15 years while doubling global annual investment in renewable energy research and development. Additional proposals are made to rebalance international trade policy by coordinating trade, labour, climate change and development cooperation to a far greater extent through new types of international economic alliances, including one that could create a workable solution to the thorny issue of climate leakage, and giving the WTO a new lease on life facilitating discussions among plurilateral trade agreements and their members about how the best normative and facilitative features of such agreements could ultimately be knit together into a reconstituted, high-road multilateral trading system. Together, these reforms would greatly accelerate progress toward UN goals.

The third chapter reflects on new youth activism within the wider context of what has been termed ‘the new social movements’. It addresses the broader transnational influence of movements abroad, and shows how new areas for political expression opened up around peace, anti-militarism, environmentalism/nuclear disarmament and sexuality. Late socialist Yugoslav society witnessed the proliferation of a youth arena of civil initiatives and activist citizenship, albeit fragmented and often discordant, which found shelter and support within parts of the existing youth institutional framework. Although the federal Youth League did not explicitly endorse all of the initiatives stemming from the new social movements, it did provide spaces for some of them and increased the visibility of their demands in the public space.

Abstract In 1927 the Consumers’ League of New York surveyed 500 working women. Would they favor a law reducing hours from fifty-four to forty-eight, the League asked. Overwhelmingly, women answered affirmatively. “I want more time to live. You get old fast enough without working yourself to death,” responded a young worker. One added, “I go to ‘Y’ classes twice a week and am studying stenography. When I worked nine hours a day I was too tired to go anywhere.” Their answers differed dramatically from those the Connecticut League had received when it asked women about their working hours just ten years before. Now, women worried less about adequate incomes; they cared more about “living.” This was a new kind of woman wage earner, with different expectations and new demands. She came from a new kind of home, which had produced a shift in the composition of female labor. And she reflected new pulls in the work force, which led her to alter her expectations. Different women were working for different reasons. They had different marital profiles and came from different age groups. The women who had held the old jobs did not qualify for the new ones. And some of those who could have continued to work chose not to.

The last chapter looks at the ways the Youth League initially sought to reform and re-invent its role and mission and was later subsumed in and divided by the wider Yugoslav political debates and developments in the country. The proposed statute changes which came out of the public debate organised by the SSOJ in 1989 reflected both the gap between the Slovenian, on the one hand, and the Serbian, the Montenegrin and the Army youth leagues, on the other, but also shed light on a spectrum of shared visions and values which existed among the other branches. The chapter reflects upon the (lack of) consensus about the dilemma of how to modernise Yugoslav society and the sphere of institutional youth politics and culture and shows how by the end of the decade the consensus on change and reform and the discourse of ‘pluralism of self-managing interests’ was almost entirely replaced by a new discourse of human rights and liberal values which foreshadowed the ‘exit from socialism’.

The first chapter maps the wide, decentralised youth infrastructure of the League of Socialist Youth of Yugoslavia (SSOJ) as a form of public space which accommodated both mainstream and ‘alternative’ politics and cultures, outlining some of the major debates which occurred within its strictly speaking political/institutional core, as well as in its peripheral sites, i.e. its media and cultural realms. It also offers an overview of the history of the institutional youth sphere, focussing on certain crucial events, such as the events of 1968 and the 1974 reorganisation of the youth organisation which resulted in the disappearance of the Student Union(s) as separate body. It shows how a process of negotiating new forms of youth activism (in the youth press), of questioning of inherited traditions and creating venues for democratisation of the youth organisation were made possible by the advancement of a new young political, media and cultural elite which generally sought to target the malfunctions of the system and undermine dogmatic socialism.

In the current century the extreme or ‘ultra’ position on the university campus has been to argue for its dissolution or abolition. University leaders and campus planners in Australia have mostly been unmoved by that position and ploughed on with expansive capital works campaigns and ambitious reformulations of existing campuses. The pandemic, however, provided ideal conditions for an unplanned but thoroughgoing experiment in operating universities without the need for a campus. Consequently, the extreme prospect of universities after the era of the modern campus now seems more likely than ever. In this paper we raise the question of the dematerialised or fully digital campus, by drawing attention to the traditional dependence of universities on material and architectural identities. We ask, what is the nature of that dependence? And consider how the current uncertainties about the status of buildings and grounds for tertiary education are driving new campus models. Using material monikers to categorise groups of universities is something of a commonplace. There is the American Ivy League, which refers to the ritualised planting of ivy at elite colleges in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The English have long referred to their “red brick” universities and to a later generation as the “plate glass” universities. In Australia, the older universities developed in the colonial era came to be known as the “sandstones” to distinguish them from the large group of new universities developed in the postwar decades. While some of the latter possess what are commonly called bush campuses. If nothing else, this tendency to categorise places of higher learning by planting and building materials indicates that the identity of institutions is bound up with their materiality. The paper is in two parts. It first sketches out the material history of the Australian university in the twentieth century, before examining an exemplary recent project that reflects some of the architectural and material uncertainties of the present moment in campus development. This prompts a series of reflections on the problem of institutional trust and brand value in a possible future without buildings.

This paper discusses a new concept generation technique that improves upon a previous automated concept generation theory and algorithm developed by Bryant, et al. at the University of Missouri – Rolla. The previous automated concept generation algorithm utilizes the design knowledge present in a repository to produce an array of partial concept solutions. While the previous algorithm is capable of handling branched functional models, it does not efficiently remove all of the infeasible partial solutions to leave only whole concepts in the final results. A matrix-based algorithm is presented in this paper that utilizes the result from the previous concept generation algorithm and solves for complete solutions of branched concepts. The presented algorithm eliminates incomplete and infeasible concepts or components from the results and generates a set of full solutions for further analysis by a designer. The details of the algorithm are described in this paper, and a peanut-sheller example is used to illustrate the effective use of the algorithm for producing branched concept variants.

Nowadays, decommissioning of nuclear power plants has become a key issue for nuclear industry in Europe. The phasing out of nuclear energy in Germany, Belgium and Sweden, as well as the early closure of nuclear units in applicant countries in the frame of EU enlargement, has largely contributed to consider decommissioning as the next challenge to face. The situation is slightly different in France where nuclear energy is still considered as a safe, cost-effective and environment friendly energy source. Electricite´ de France (EDF) is working on the development of a new generation of reactor to replace the existing one and erection of a new nuclear power plant could start in the next few years. Nevertheless, to achieve this objective, it will be necessary to get the support of political decision-makers and the acceptance of public opinion. Due to the growing concern of these stakeholders for environmental issues, their support can only be obtained if it is possible to demonstrate that nuclear energy industry will not leave behind unsolved issues that will be a burden to the next generations. In this context decommissioning of the first generation of EDF NPPs constitutes a prerequisite for the erection of a new type of nuclear power plant. This paper will present the programme defined by EDF for the decommissioning of its nine already shutdown reactors (Fig. 1). The reasons of the recent evolution of EDF decommissioning strategy will be explained and the key issues that will contribute to the successful implementation of this programme will be addressed. Finally, what has been achieved on sites so far and major planned activities will be described.

Abstract A new generation alumina ceramic proppant has been developed for higher drag and thus improved settling performance compared to conventional sand or ceramic proppant. Slickwater hydraulic fracture treatments in unconventional gas and tight oil developments are less expensive and less likely to leave residue than cross-linked gel formulations, but due to the lower viscosity, proppant transported with slickwater tends to settle out, likely contributing to screenout of proppant and shorter fracture half length with limited propped height. This novel proppant technology is designed to address the challenges of better proppant placement and increased propped height and half length in slickwater fracturing. This paper describes prototype development of the novel proppant technology, laboratory testing, and hydraulic fracturing modeling. The new proppant is shaped such that it tumbles and flutters during sedimentation in water and this movement greatly reduces settling rate. Finite element structural analysis was conducted to optimize the geometry to achieve higher crush strength while maintaining the conductivity. Laboratory sedimentation tests show a significant increase in settling time of new generation proppant compared to 30-50 sand poppant which had similar size and weight. Hydraulic fracturing modeling shows potential for a significant increase in proppant coverage area. With structurally designed and optimized shapes, this high drag proppant has better transport/placement due to lower settling rates, and enhanced proppant flowback control. Finally, a practical manufacturing process has been identified to enable cost-effective manufacturing of this material.

The state-owned power utility, Eskom, generates about ninety five percent of the electricity produced in South Africa. Plans by the government of South Africa in the mid-nineteen nineties to restructure the electricity industry in the country prevented Eskom from embarking on capacity expansion activities when it was necessary. Load growth, as a result of economic growth and a national electrification programme, caused an erosion of the electricity reserve margin, which was quite massive in the early nineties. The large reserve margin then caused Eskom to reduce operating capacity by mothballing some generating plants and putting them in reserve storage. The current situation is that the reserve margin has dropped to about 17,4 percent and a capacity expansion programme is underway. Though the apparent reserve margin is within the desired range, plant unavailability has diminished the reserve margin in real terms and this does not leave Eskom with much room for planned maintenance and a buffer to manage unplanned maintenance, the result being that plant incidents and technical problems cannot easily be absorbed within the power system to avoid interruption of supply. Also, the new environmental legislation does not help the situation, as it has the potential to shut down generating plants that do not meet the new emissions standard. In addition, there have been problems with the New Build Programme that caused a delay, of over three years, in the delivery of new power, and to compound the problem the Energy Regulator refused recently Eskom’s application for additional tariff increase, which was requested to enable the company provide the finances to cover the shortfall in funding for operational expenses and the New Build Programme. As such, Eskom faces many challenges in meeting its obligation to South Africa, and interventions are in place to manage the situation. In the short term, the key to generation sustainability is improved plant health, brought about by on-time maintenance and correctly-scoped and no-slip outages. This paper presents an overview of the power situation in South Africa, explaining where the country has come from, the plan for long term security of supply, and the challenges faced by Eskom from the generation supply side in meeting the demand load in the short term. Trends in the performance indices indicative of plant health are examined and it is argued that executing planned plant maintenance will improve plant health and, hence, plant availability, which can bring about a turnaround in the short term power supply situation, as Eskom awaits new capacity from the New Build Programme.

Policies that seek to mitigate poverty by acting on equal opportunity have been found to aggravate discrimination against the poor (aporophobia), since individuals are made responsible for not progressing in the social hierarchy. Only a minority of the poor benefit from meritocracy in this era of growing inequality, generating resentment among those who seek to escape their needy situations by trying to climb up the ladder. Through the formulation and development of an agent-based social simulation, this study aims to analyse the role of norms implementing equal opportunity and social solidarity principles as enhancers or mitigators of aporophobia, as well as the threshold of aporophobia that would facilitate the success of poverty-reduction policies. The ultimate goal of the social simulation is to extract insights that could help inform and guide a new generation of policy making for poverty reduction by acting on the discrimination against the poor, in line with the UN “Leave No One Behind” principle. An “aporophobia-meter” will be developed and guidelines will be drafted based on both the simulation results and a review of poverty reduction policies at regional levels.

Numerical simulations of wave phenomena necessarily have to be carried out in a limited computational domain. This implies that incoming waves should be prescribed properly, and the outgoing waves should leave the domain without causing reflections. In this paper we will present an enhanced type of such generating and absorbing boundary conditions (GABC). The new approach is applied in studies of extreme hydrodynamic wave impact on rigid and floating structures in offshore and coastal engineering, for which the VOF-based CFD simulation tool ComFLOW has been developed.

The increasing interest in recent years in energy efficiency and sustainability has generated a wealth of new innovations. Whether it is improved systems for generating energy from wind or water, new biofuels, or methods for increasing energy production from conventional fossil fuels, such innovations require expenditure of considerable research and development money. Failure to take measures to protect those innovations leave a company’s treasures open for others to use. While some feel that no protection should be granted on methods and devices that are designed to heal our Earth, the law was developed to encourage companies to invest in research. As it is, a large number of companies have already sought Intellectual Property protection for the advances they have conceived. Automotive companies have been protecting hybrid and hydrogen developments for many years. Other fields, such as solar power and wind generation, have seen a recent increase in patent applications on new developments. Navigating through these developments is becoming more and more complex as companies seek not only to protect devices that they have brought to market, but also improved concepts and advanced stages of research. Many companies blindly spend vast sums of money researching advances in a particular field, only to find out that another company has placed an Intellectual Property obstacle that inhibits bringing the advanced technology to market. Recent cases, including those from the Supreme Court have significant impact on how and whether new technology can be protected. This paper explains why patenting of green technology is beneficial to our society and some important things that companies involved in sustainability and energy advances need to know to protect themselves in this new green tinted world.

The Type 23 Frigate (T23) has been extended in-service well beyond its initial design life of 18 years, with some ships due to be over 35 years old when they leave service. To ensure the vessels remain effective and available a T23 Life Extension (LIFEX) programme was set up to meet this revised End of Life (EOL). A significant element of this LIFEX and the focus of this paper is PGMU (Power Generation and MCAS Update). The aim of PGMU is to restore electrical power margins and to overcome equipment obsolescence. This requirement was set with the obvious constraint that new equipment must integrate with the existing ship and it’s supporting systems without adversely affecting key operational characteristics. Considered an Alteration and Addition (AandA) but the largest the T23 has ever seen, the project has encompassed the entire cradle to birth cycle and equipment is currently being fitted into the first of class with a plan to achieve sea trials in Q2 2019. PGMU will replace the most critical assets of a warship; its power generation system. It replaces the 4 diesel generators with higher power units, the replacement of the 2 motor generator sets that supply the 440v ship services, upgrades the switchboards as well as the Machinery Controls and Surveillance System (MCAS). Challenges have come in the form of structural limitations; stability management; signature management; physical integration and the re-designing of a legacy platform to new standards. This paper builds on one that I presented at INEC 2016: “Facing the challenges of integration and physical constraints when replacing major equipment in old platforms”. This edition will cover issues that have arisen in the later stages of the design and validation through into the integration for First of Class (FoC); HMS Richmond. It will concentrate on the naval architectural aspects of the project and will consider how they were managed whilst offering an overview of some of the key learning from experience (LFE) that has been gained.

Abstract Traditional design-for-manufacturing (DFM) strategies focus on efficiency and design simplification and tend to be too restrictive for optimization-based design methods; recent advances in manufacturing technologies have opened up many new and exciting design options, but it is necessary to have a wide design space in order to take advantage of these benefits. What is needed is a simple but effective approach for restricting the design space to designs which are guaranteed to be manufacturable, but which leave intact as much of the design space as possible. Work has been done in this area for some specific domains, but a general method for accomplishing this has not yet been refined. This article presents an exploration of this problem and developed a framework for mapping practical manufacturing knowledge into mathematical manufacturability constraints in mechanical design problem formulations. The steps for completing this mapping and the enforcing the constraints are discussed and demonstrated. Three case studies (a milled heat exchanger fin, a 3-D printed topologically-optimized beam, and a pulley requiring a hybrid additive-subtractive process for production) were completed to demonstrate the concepts; these concepts include problem formulation, the generation and enforcement of the manufacturability constraints, and fabrication of the resulting designs with and without constraints.
