The Prado-Recoletos axis is the main historical boulevard in Madrid, which contains the most important concentration of art museums in all of Spain: the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. In the last years, they have undergone extensive renovation. The different renovation projects can be used to examine how museum libraries today juggle the needs of their users while addressing the challenge of providing the services of a modern research library. The new State Museum Libraries Network (BIMUS) has been an important factor in this development.

The Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren is often referred to as one of the last colonial museums in the world. This article provides an overview of the various steps taken in the fundamental transformation process and the plan for renovation of the museum with a view to making it a modern and dynamic Africa museum. For this institution, which is simultaneously a Museum, Research Institute, and Centre of Information Dissemination, a mere change of décor is not sufficient: a fundamental shift in vision, a series of risks, and especially a move towards dialogue and transparency have been part of the process, which has implications that extend far beyond the walls of the museum.

This paper summarizes a discussion of the role of disaster-related museums in passing down memories and lessons-learned to future generations through storytelling. The 135-minute discussion was held as a breakout session entitled “The Role of Museums in Telling Live Lessons” during the 2020 International Forum on Telling Live Lessons from Disasters in Kobe, Japan. On 25 January 2020, representatives of five museums (one still under construction) engaged in disaster storytelling activities. They discussed various issues, including how to engage local communities and improve the relationship between storytelling and sustainable museum management. The participating museums were the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hawaii, U.S.A., the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI) in Kobe, Japan, the Museum of the Mount Bandai Eruption in Fukushima, Japan, the International Tsunami Museum in Khaolak, Thailand, and the Ban Namkhem Memorial and Museum in Thailand (under construction). Museums are important venues that develop and continue disaster storytelling. All the participating museums digitally archive images, which creates the permanent inheritance of collective memory. All the museums focus on children. On the other hand, human and economic resources are required for museums to carry out their activities. The need for a museum network engaged in disaster storytelling is also discussed.

Purpose. The aim of the paper is to present the activities that the Glyptotheque CASA (Gliptoteka HAZU) undertook after the earthquakes in 2020 to preserve sculptural heritage in times of crisis. The intention is also to describe the experience of solidarity and cooperation with different partners and volunteers. The aim is also revaluation and presentation of plans for the overall renovation of the buildings and new displays. Approach/methodology. The paper shows the degree of damage to the buildings and the museum fund through a case study. The basic data on the damage and how evacuation was approached, the methodology of listing damage, and the organization of work in conditions of a pandemic and limited social contact are presented. Findings. The paper presents the activities in which professional staff of the Glyptotheque was involved, as well as volunteers – professional restorers, who kindly helped to make detailed documentation of the current condition of the damaged sculptures. The response to this earthquake showed that solidarity and care for heritage go together. Therefore, a complete renovation and reconstruction of the museum complex are being planned, and a new permanent exhibition. Value. The paper presents a valuable experience of a sculpture museum after the earthquake with the aim of raising awareness of endangered cultural heritage and the importance of its preventive protection, as well as the necessity of revaluation of museum activities in terms of protection and placement of museum objects. The paper describes the events and methods of working in crisis situations, such as the earthquake that hit the museum, and the pandemic that affected the overall work of the museum and professional staff. This unfortunate, unique experience was a generator of changes. Therefore, the creation of plans for the future renovation and the overall renovation of the museum complex, as well as plans for new modernized permanent exhibits, has begun.

Established in 1962, the Hong Kong Museum of Art was the first public museum in the city. It closed in August 2015 for a four-year renovation and spatial expansion of the facility, and reopened its doors in November 2019. The renovation happened precisely in the interstices of two important historical ruptures in recent Hong Kong history: the Umbrella Movement of 2014 and the ongoing Anti-China Extradition Movement that started in 2019. These movements are redefining the identity of the city and its people in contrast to the conventional Hong Kong cliché of transformation from fishing village to modern financial hub. Without addressing recent changes in cultural identity, the revamped museum rhetorically deploys obsolete curatorial narratives through exhibitions of Hong Kong art. This report critiques the representation of Hong Kongness in the revamped museum and argues that the latter is a soulless entity that overlooks the fact that both politics and art are now reconstructing local identities.

This degree project has been carried out in collaboration with the National Property Board of Sweden. The National Museum is currently undergoing renovation where the goal is to restore the building to its original glory. A new ventilation system is to be installed to facilitate a stable indoor climate for the conservation of museum artifacts. The building has been declared a historical monument which imposes limitations on permissible alterations to its architecture and construction. The degree project examines how to combine these limitations with the demands made on the ventilation system by answering the following question, "How can modern installations be integrated within a historical monument, without affecting the historical value?" To exemplify the complexity of this problem, a section of the building has been chosen and studied in more detail. A principle solution is then presented where the installations are integrated with the surrounding structures. The air supply to the exhibition halls on the fourth floor constitutes one of the more complex problems in the building. The installations that service these halls are to be contained within the floor structure above. It is this floor structure that has been studied in more detail. The museum climate and its effects on the artifacts, building construction and installations are studied in depth. Currently the museum environment is a heated topic of discussion where prescribed guidelines are challenged and an international standard is sought. The desired indoor climate determines the scope of the ventilation system. Therefore this report concludes a discussion on the climate requirements presented by the National Museum and how these can be accommodated. Our conclusion is that a sustainable integration of architecture and installations can be achieved when the solution is based on the limitations of the building as opposed to the demands of the occupants.

XXI.
The present report has as a goal, to solve the enlargement of the abandoned Fábrica de Óleo de Fígado de Bacalhau, situated in Cais do Ginjal – Almada, adapting it to a museological program that embraces contemporary art. It consists in the experienced analysis of three museums that contemplate various museological and architectonic concepts, which allowed to compare: the relationship with the urban environment, renovation solutions, program and exhibition displays that where correlated to the final project. These museums are MKM Museum Küppersmühle (Duisburg), Museum Punta della Dogana (Venice) and Matadero Intermedeae (Madrid). The project offers a reflection about the concept of Time in Architecture, through the memory of the building that accepts, in time, different uses. The insertion of new matters, in the urban fabric, that might change as the citizens needs, tally dynamism to the entire urban environment, reaching the wanted image of the XXI century Museum.

ABSTRACT - The following work aims to adapt an Installation for the Treatment of Cod Liver Oil in Cacilhas, Almada, to an extension of the Berardo Collection Museum for Contemporary Art. It is proposed a reflection and a clarification of the Museum Lobby, structuring and solving it in project.Starting with a brief framework on the subject Museums, carries out the analysis of a set of Museums and "Anti-Museums" constructed from the second half of the twentieth century. The following is the characterization of the Lobby in museums of the twenty-first century and a description of the final Project. A proposal based on cultural and commercial policies, according to the new challenges posed to the museums of the twenty-first century, separated into two sections: one with "public use", commercial, a new construction related to the Lobby and its activities; other of "semi-public use," cultural, from the adaptation of the pre-existing building and the new construction to the museum program. A project that synthesizes a theoretical and conceptual approach on the role of the Museum Lobby, trying to integrate it into the industrial pre-existing building and, at the same time, to emphasize it as a space of identity and identification of the new project

This thesis aims to investigate how the meaning of the concept of authenticity has been used in arguments about the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. The museum, which opened for the first time in 1866, was closed for restoration, renovation and other engagements during 2013-2018. After the reopening, a debate took place in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. In the debate there were people who argued that the reconstruction had erased the museum’s history and replaced it with modern design. Other people argued that the reconstruction had made the building more true to its history as older reconstructions had distorted the original building. The main source material for the present study consists of a final report of the project made by the National Property Board, selected debate articles from the debate on the reconstruction in Svenska Dagbladet, and an interview and two mail conversations that have been made with persons involved in the project. Through argumentation analysis, arguments from the final report, the debate in Svenska Dagbladet, the interview and the mail conversations have been analyzed. The arguments selected from the source material are arguments that either indicate that the authenticity has been preserved or that the authenticity has not been preserved. The thesis does not intend to determine whether the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum has preserved the authenticity or not, it is the argumentation about this issue that is to be investigated. The reason is that the perception differs between different people, different contexts and different views. The analysis shows that the arguments claiming that the authenticity has not been preserved above all relate to the building's younger reconstructions with its additions that were removed during the current reconstruction. Some debaters argue that the building's younger history also has a value that should be protected. In the end it comes down to what kind of authenticity one intends to preserve. In the project, the experience values have been prioritized before the material values, which indicates that the authenticity from a material perspective may have decreased while the functional authenticity of the building has increased. The arguments that favour that the authenticity has been preserved are primarily based on the view that great emphasis has been placed on the preservation of the building's cultural-historical value. During the project one has also been inspired by the building's original drawings made by the building's architect Friedrich August Stüler, which indicates that the authenticity of the original building has been strengthened. The thesis ends with a final discussion where the result of the analysis is presented in relation to the theoretical framework of the thesis. This is done in order to answer the research questions. The main research question for the thesis has been; "How has the meaning of authenticity been presented in the final report, in the debate and by people who have worked with the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum?”.

With the financial growth and international acclaim brought about by Guggenheim Museum for Bilbao, the media started to talk about the so-called “Bilbao Effect”. For the next two decades, the general public has been more and more convinced and accustomed to the positive results landmark architecture might brought for their cities. Thus it is worthwhile to explore the root of the Bilbao Effect and to dig into the effects of Guggenheim Museum so that similar industrial cities may select and apply strategies basing on their own conditions.

With more than 200 years of history, Bopiliao Historic District is one of the well-preserved blocks from the Qin period. During the Japanese occupation, this district was persevered for a school construction which kept the original design. Surviving from the crisis of land expropriation and demolition, this district not only preserves the local development but also records community culture which becomes an encyclopedia of urban development. Bopiliao Historic District, reused as an Eco-museum, becomes the key museum at Wanhua District and also an information center of local history, culture and tourism. The blockbuster movie“Monga” boosted the tourist numbers and established a good example of city marketing. However, the number of tourists declined gradually while the movie was out of theaters. Renovating the Bopiliao Historic District becomes an important issue. Under the theory of Eco-museum, this research re-examines the renovation of 6TBopiliao Historic District6T and probes into the communication between this district and the community in the post-Monga era. Through the 3Tin-depth interview, the current difficulties and potential development of 3T6TBopiliao Historic District6T are widely discussed. The following are some points of advice which are based on my research. 1. Applying the land use rezoning of 6TBopiliao Historic District6T to meet the multiple purposes. 2. Simplifying to one single authority and an overall development plan is necessary. 3. Expanding the decision -making role of the community. 4. Enhancing the communication with local people. The museum is not only a tourist attraction but also a connection with the community. 5. Combing the neighborhood resources to restore industrial 6Tprosperity6T. 6. Encouraging the local people to play a more active part in the community development. 7. Joint development of culture and business is the foundation for sustainable management.

Aliye Fatma Mataracı analyses the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo and discusses the major challenges of preserving tangible and intangible heritage in war and post-war periods. She raises the difficulties of safeguarding and renovating the museum as a built heritage asset on the one hand, and of protecting and maintaining its collections as cultural heritage on the other. Particular attention is also given to the term ‘national’ and its usage in the English title of the museum, in reference to the former Austro-Hungarian and local appellations of the museum. This heritage site has been exposed to different political, social, economic and religious contexts. However, it promotes the expression and representation of the cultural heritage of people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and offers an alternative for the preservation and maintenance of the country’s ethno-religious identities and cultures.

Abstract Mamadiou Dia (Senegal, born 191 I) was a schoolteacher, a headmaster, and a journalist before turning to politics in the mid-I 940s. He served as a senator of the French Republic, representing Senegal; then after independence, he was prime minister of Senegal for four years. Dia’s long collaboration with President Leopold Sedar Senghor, a non-Muslim, symbolized the relative absence of religious strife in Senegal, where the population is more than four-fifths Muslim. Nonetheless, Dia broke with Senghor in 1962 and was jailed for a dozen years. During his incarceration, Dia turned from politics to religion, integrating his fervent socialism into a theory of”lslamic humanism.”1In a series of books on Islam published after his release from prison, Dia argues that interpretation of Islam must respond positively to the modern world, as Christianity has. Dia refers frequently to recent French theology for inspiration and methodological guidance-the effect being an opacity somewhat different from the Qur’anic exegesis of other works in this book. cares there, but to draw from thence elements for the renovation and revitalization of Islamic philosophy.

Abstract Germany’s aesthetic history, like its political history during the course of the twentieth century, has had a fraught legacy and its complex history continues to cast long shadows to this day. In summarizing cultural trends since unification, history will never be far from the analysis since it begins at the exact moment of the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. This essay describes the major post-1990 trends not only in the visual arts, but also in photography and equally importantly, in the politics of museum curating and museum renovation. For it was due to the latter activities that some German artists were favoured over others and received critical notice which advanced their careers. The politics of museum curating along with the renovation of existing museums and the construction of new museums has become an important national project in the united Federal Republic. In the meantime, many of the country’s artists and their rich variety in artistic styles and approaches—performance artists, painters, sculptors, photographers, and others—have achieved much international and also public acclaim.

The aim of this chapter is to consider the theoretical research line around the collaboration between museums and schools. To do so, first, the role of museums as non-formal educational spaces will be established. Then, the state of the question will be presented concerning the most relevant studies carried out both in Spain and internationally (focusing particularly on the United States) regarding the study of the relationship between museums and schools from its origins to the new challenges of the 21st century. The main conclusions of these studies reflect a change in the educational methodology developed in schools, the renovation of the visitors' interaction with the museum, and the development of a new model of cultural consumption. The proposal for the future is to contribute towards the development of collaborative processes between schools and museums, and the reasons and recommendations for such collaboration are presented.

The Coa Museum, open in 2010, is the entryway to the Coa Valley Archaeological Park. The visit to the rock art sites at the Coa is an authentic, irreplaceable experience that does not need ‘artifices’ to be enjoyed beyond a captivating guide delivering scientifically approved knowledge to visitors on the art and its natural and cultural context. Thus, the Museum’s exhibition programme was originally thought of as a complement to the visit to the Park that could summarize the scientific information collected in the last decades in the Coa Valley as well as presenting the most relevant rock imagery of a territory that extends for about 200 km2 . A decade after inauguration, taking advantage of the augmented and virtual reality devices that have now been made available, time had come to update the exhibit, making the visit even more captivating. Therefore, this chapter intends to present, discuss, and muse on the digital renovation recently implemented at the Coa Museum.

The paper deals with one of the recurring tragedies that have already consumed a lot of human cultural heritage, the fires, based on the example of the National Museum, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, fundamental institution for scientific dissemination, for national development and as the first museum experience for popular sectors. The memory of its formation and development is recovered, presenting its collections and exhibitions, and showing how the fire ended an intense museum renovation process in progress. It presents the immediate and, mainly, mediates causes of creating the environment for the tragedy. In particular, it points out how the disinvestment process is related to the neoliberal setback in a dependent country: the denial of the need for popular education and public scientific research, which was developed by this institution. Finally, it shows how this museum can recover, trusting its dedicated workers and the support and affection that the popular community of the city and the suburbs feel for the museum.

В 1890 г. The reconstruction, restoration and renovation of architectural monuments are accompanied by significant changes in the socio-cultural space: monuments are coming back to life, new educational routes and leisure places are being formed.
