Goal-oriented dialogue agents can comfortably utilize the conversational context and understand its users' goals. However, in visually driven user experiences, these conversational agents are also required to make sense of the screen context in order to provide a proper interactive experience. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal conversational framework where the dialogue agent's next action and their arguments are derived jointly conditioned both on the conversational and the visual context. We demonstrate the proposed approach via a prototypical furniture shopping experience for a multimodal virtual assistant.

ABSTRACTLanthanide nanoparticles had the possibility to couple many imaging techniques into a sole labeling agent has awaken high expectations on personalized medicine or <<Theranostics>>. This is possible due to their intrinsic physic – chemical properties. Combining different imaging techniques physicians may provide a better treatment and perform surgical procedures that might increase the survival rate of patients. Hence, there is an enormous opportunity area for the development of lanthanide multimodal nanoparticles. For this study, we synthesized Gd – Gd2O3 nanoparticles at room temperature by reduction method assisted by Tannic acid, and later we doped them with different ratios of Eu. The nanoparticles were analyzed through high resolution microscopy (HRTEM), Raman Spectroscopy, luminescence, and magnetic characterizations. We found small nanoparticles with a mean size of 5 nm, covered in a carbonaceous layer. In addition, different emissions were detected depending on Eu concentration. Finally, the magnetization vs. temperature recorded under zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) conditions exhibit an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in samples with Gd2O3, and hysteresis loops recorded at 100 Oe and 2 K showed a relevant magnetization without magnetic remanence. Hence, these nanomaterials have interesting properties to be tested in biocompatibility assays.

Molecular imaging, where the location of molecules or nanoscale constructs can be tracked in the body to report on disease or biochemical processes, is rapidly expanding to include combined modality or multimodal imaging. No single imaging technique can offer the optimum combination of properties (e.g. resolution, sensitivity, cost, availability). The rapid technological advances in hardware to scan patients, and software to process and fuse images, are pushing the boundaries of novel medical imaging approaches, and hand-in-hand with this is the requirement for advanced and specific multimodal imaging agents. These agents can be detected using a selection from radioisotope, magnetic resonance and optical imaging, among others. Nanoparticles offer great scope in this area as they lend themselves, via facile modification procedures, to act as multifunctional constructs. They have relevance as therapeutics and drug delivery agents that can be tracked by molecular imaging techniques with the particular development of applications in optically guided surgery and as radiosensitizers. There has been a huge amount of research work to produce nanoconstructs for imaging, and the parameters for successful clinical translation and validation of therapeutic applications are now becoming much better understood. It is an exciting time of progress for these agents as their potential is closer to being realized with translation into the clinic. The coming 5–10 years will be critical, as we will see if the predicted improvement in clinical outcomes becomes a reality. Some of the latest advances in combination modality agents are selected and the progression pathway to clinical trials analysed. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Challenges for chemistry in molecular imaging’.

Today, user interfaces normally consist of a screen, and a pointing device and a keyboard for input. However, as more advanced technology and methods appears, there should be good chances to utilize these for more natural and effective human-computer interfaces. The main motivation is to get a more natural and easy to use interface, and the computer should understand the user without too much effort from the user. Intelligent interfaces could be a solution to achieve this goal. The main focus in this thesis, is multimodal input which combines different input modalities to achieve the user's goal. A framework has been designed where the user has the possibility to change between input modalities. The system should integrate the information given in different input modalities to one joint meaning. In this architecture, input could either be location or command input, and different modalities could be used for each input type. The example described later on in this thesis combines either speech or written text as command input, with either map input or physical position for location input. An agent-based blackboard architecture are used for collecting input. Agents collect information directly from the user. Each agent represent their own input modality, and is responsible to analyse input. As this is done, the agent send the information to a common blackboard which hold the latest information from each agent. An own agent which is responsible for fusing this information to one common meaning, collects the information from the blackboard and integrate it to one joint meaning. This joint interpretation decides what should be done to which object. Since the modalities are independent of each other, other modalities could easily be added with just small changes to other parts of the system as long as it is an command or location input which agrees to the currently representation structure.

Embodied Conversational Agents are a new type of computer interfaces which have human-like bodies and conversational skills. Users interacting with agents will be more engaged and participative if the agents exhibit behaviors which look coherent across different situations and emotional states. In the present work, we aim at increasing agents believability by looking at two main aspects of the problem : - an agent must be able to show its emotional state and communicative intentions not only through specific facial expressions, gestures, etc. , but also by varying the quality of its movements (e. G. , their speed, amplitude, etc. ) and the choice of the modalities that are used to communicate ; - the agent must maintain a disctinctive behavior tendency has to remain apparent during any communication ; We have developed a model to solve the two above issues. We have evaluated the realism and believability of the resulting agent's behaviors through perceptual tests and application scenario. The resulting system is highly extensible and configurable. It can also be used as a research tool to study human communication

Since several decades, urban congestion is more and more widespread and deteriorate the quality of life of citizens who live in cities. Several methods are used to reduce urban congestion, notably traffic regulation and promotion of public transportation. Since the 1990's, the usage of tools from artificial intelligence, particularly distributed systems and multi-agent systems, allowed to design new methods for traffic regulation. Indeed, these methods ease to take into account the complexity of traffic-related problems with distribution. Moreover, the improvement of the communication abilities of the vehicles and the coming of autonomous vehicles allow to consider new approaches for regulation. The research work presented in this work is twofold. First we propose a method for traffic regulation at an intersection based on automatic negotiation. Our method is based on an argumentation system describing the state of the traffic and the preferences of each vehicle, relying on reasonning methods for vehicles and infrastructures. In the second part of this thesis, we propose a coordination method for buses for the rest of the traffic. This method allows a bus to coordinate in an anticipatory way with the next intersections on its trajectory, in order to define a common regulation policy allowing the bus to reach its next stop without suffering from potential congestions

Diagnostic ultrasound (US) is safer, quicker and cheaper than other diagnostic imaging modalities. Over the past two decades, the applications of US imaging has been widened due to the development of injectable, compressible and encapsulated microbubbles (MBs) that provide an opportunity to improve conventional echocardiographic imaging, blood flow assessment and molecular imaging. The encapsulating material is manufactured by different biocompatible materials such as proteins, lipids or polymers. In current research, researchers modify the encapsulated shell with the help of advanced molecular chemistry techniques to load them with dyes (for fluorescent imaging), nanoparticles and radioisotopes (for multimodal imaging) or functional ligands or therapeutic gases (for local drug delivery). The echogenicity and the radial oscillation of MBs is the result of their compressibility, which undoubtedly varies with the encapsulated shell characteristics such as rigidity or elasticity. In this thesis, we present acoustic properties of novel type of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-shelled microbubble (PVA-MB) that was further modified with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to work as a dual-modal contrast agent for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging along with US imaging. Apparently, the shell modification changes their mechanical characteristics, which affects their acoustic properties. The overall objective of the thesis is to investigate the acoustic properties of modified and unmodified PVA-MBs at different ultrasound parameters. The acoustic and mechanical characterization of SPIONs modified PVA-MBs revealed that the acoustical response depends on the SPION inclusion strategy. However they retain the same structural characteristics after the modification. The modified MBs with SPIONs included on the surface of the PVA shell exhibit a soft-shelled behavior and produce a higher echogenicity than the MBs with the SPIONs inside the PVA shell. The fracturing mechanism of the unmodified PVA-MBs was identified to be different from the other fracturing mechanisms of conventional MBs. With the interaction of high-pressure bursts, the air gas core is squeezed out through small punctures in the PVA shell. During the fracturing, the PVA-MBs exhibit asymmetric (other modes) oscillations, resulting in sub- and ultra-harmonic generation. Exploiting the US imaging at the other modes of the oscillation of the PVA-MBs would provide an opportunity to visualize very low concentrations of (down to single) PVA-MBs. We further introduced the PVA-MBs along with particles mimicking red blood cells in an acoustic standing-wave field to observe the acoustic radiation force effect. We observed that the compressible PVA-MBs drawn toward pressure antinode while the solid blood phantoms moved toward the pressure node. This acoustic separation method (acoustophoresis) could be an efficient tool for studying the bioclearance of the PVA-MBs in the body, either by collecting blood samples (in-vitro) or by using the extracorporeal medical procedure (ex-vivo) at different organs. Overall, this work contributes significant feedback for chemists (to optimize the nanoparticle inclusion) and imaging groups (to develop new imaging sequences), and the positive findings pave new paths and provide triggers to engage in further research.

A Coordination chemistry based historical perspective of contrast agents which are utilised in various imaging modalities, forms the basis of Chapter 1. Chapter 1 also highlights the various latest advancements and the challenges confronted therein. Chapter 1 culminates in highlighting the need for dual purpose contrast agents. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 deals with rx)lyarnino poly carboxylate derivatives based on EDTA and DTPA respectively. Chapter 2 sheds light upon Teslascan and other related manganese based potential contrast agents. It also highlights the emergence of Mn (II) as the direct competitor for Gd (HI) in the face of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) reported for Gd based contrast agents. The chapter culminates in describing the synthesis of a library of EDTA bisamides, including four new EDTA bisamides. Chapter 3 in turn takes a detailed look at a series of DTPA analogues and DTPA bisamides synthesized by scientists all over the world. It also highlights the various synthetic methodologies undertaken by the able scientists. The chapter culminates in describing four new multidentate ligands synthesized in this project, namely two new DTPA analogues and two new DTPA Bisamides. It has been shown that the synthetic methodology utilised to synthesize symmetric naphtha derivative L5 is fairly unique. Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 report the investigations carried out on these new multidentate ligands in terms of relaxometry, potentiometry and luminescence. Interesting results were obtained from relaxometric and luminescence measurements. For instance, symmetric naphtha derivative, reported a relaxivity of 8.8 mM'V1, relaxivity obtained for Mn (II) complex of EDTA bisamide of 4-aniinomethylpyridine is also highly commendable. Investigations on the optical properties of the multidentate ligands require a separate chapter. Thus it is has been allotted Chapter 5. DTPA bisamide of N, N-Bis (tert- butoxycarrx)nyl)memyl-2-bromcmylamine was found to quench the fluorescence upon binding with Cu (II), indicating its application as luminescent sensor for Cu (II).

Emergence of new bioimaging technologies requires the development of the most appropriate contrast agents for each application. In this thesis, we present the development of gold nanorods (GNRs) and chromium doped zinc gallium oxide (ZGO:Cr) for labelling mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which enabled multimodal in vivo monitoring of cells. GNRs are excellent contrast agents for Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) due to the high absorbance of their longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the Near Infrared (NIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Persistent luminescent nanoparticles such as ZGO:Cr have arisen as promising optical in vivo probes due to their long emission lifetime, in the order of minutes. First, NPs were synthesised and their surface was modified to improve colloidal stability, biocompatibility and cell uptake. GNRs were prepared by the seed-mediated growth method, and modified via ligand exchange using a small thiolated PEG with a carboxylic acid terminal group. For ZGO:Cr a hydrothermal approach was followed and surface was modified with DMSA. Interactions with cells and how these interactions affect the optical properties of the nanoprobes have been also studied here. To follow a multimodal imaging approach, MSC cells were co-incubated with PEG-COOH-GNRs and DMSA-ZGO. Imaging by means of MSOT and optical imaging was conducted after subcutaneous injection, and also after intracardiac administration of labelled cells. The combination of different imaging modalities is frequently required to overcome limitations of a particular technique. In our case, MSOT offered great resolution deep into the body, enabling sub-organ localisation of labelled cells, which is not possible with pure optical-based techniques. However, organs such as lungs and stomach cannot be visualised and endogenous absorbers with similar optical spectrum than GNRs could lead to false positives. On the other side, persistent luminescence did not present those limitations, however its spatial resolution is much worse than MSOT. Therefore, the two imaging modalities complemented each other to have a more accurate view of the process.

Zero-dimensional graphene (carbon) quantum dots have been drawing attention in bio-related applications since their discovery, especially for their optical properties, chemical stability, and easily modifiable surface.  This thesis focuses on the green synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for dual-mode bioimaging with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and optical fluorescence. Both conventional and microwave- (MW-)assisted solvothermal methods were followed to investigate the precursors’ effect on the synthesized GQDs. The MW-assisted method permitted the synthesis of uniform GQDs with an excitation-independent behavior, due to highly controllable reaction conditions. It was demonstrated that the molecular structure of the precursors influenced the optical fluorescence properties of the GQDs. Thus, both blue- (BQDs) and red-emitting (RQDs) GQDs were obtained by selecting specific precursors, leading to emission maxima at 438 and 605 nm under the excitation wavelengths of 390 and 585 nm, respectively.  Amine-functionalized Rh nanoparticles (NPs) were chosen as the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) active core, synthesized via MW-assisted hydrothermal method with a custom designed sugar ligand as the reducing agent. These NPs were conjugated with BQDs using EDC-NHS treatment. The hybrid Rh-GQDs NPs exhibited green emission (520 nm) under 490 nm excitation and led to a reduced cytotoxicity with respect to bare Rh NPs, highlighting the passivation role of the GQDs via the real-time cell analysis (RTCA) assay. The hybrid complex constituted a multimodal bioimaging contrastagent, tested with confocal microscopy (in vitro) and XRF phantom experiments.

Face to face interaction is one of the most fundamental forms of human communication. It is a complex multimodal and coupled dynamic system involving not only speech but of numerous segments of the body among which gaze, the orientation of the head, the chest and the body, the facial and brachiomanual movements, etc. The understanding and the modeling of this type of communication is a crucial stage for designing interactive agents capable of committing (hiring) credible conversations with human partners. Concretely, a model of multimodal behavior for interactive social agents faces with the complex task of generating gestural scores given an analysis of the scene and an incremental estimation of the joint objectives aimed during the conversation. The objective of this thesis is to develop models of multimodal behavior that allow artificial agents to engage into a relevant co-verbal communication with a human partner. While the immense majority of the works in the field of human-agent interaction (HAI) is scripted using ruled-based models, our approach relies on the training of statistical models from tracks collected during exemplary interactions, demonstrated by human trainers. In this context, we introduce "sensorimotor" models of behavior, which perform at the same time the recognition of joint cognitive states and the generation of the social signals in an incremental way. In particular, the proposed models of behavior have to estimate the current unit of interaction ( IU) in which the interlocutors are jointly committed and to predict the co-verbal behavior of its human trainer given the behavior of the interlocutor(s). The proposed models are all graphical models, i.e. Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN). The models were trained and evaluated - in particular compared with classic classifiers - using datasets collected during two different interactions. Both interactions were carefully designed so as to collect, in a minimum amount of time, a sufficient number of exemplars of mutual attention and multimodal deixis of objects and places. Our contributions are completed by original methods for the interpretation and comparative evaluation of the properties of the proposed models. By comparing the output of the models with the original scores, we show that the HMM, thanks to its properties of sequential modeling, outperforms the simple classifiers in term of performances. The semi-Markovian models (HSMM) further improves the estimation of sensorimotor states thanks to duration modeling. Finally, thanks to a rich structure of dependency between variables learnt from the data, the DBN has the most convincing performances and demonstrates both the best performance and the most faithful multimodal coordination to the original multimodal events

Background Opioid analgesia has become the mainstay for acute pain management in the postoperative setting. However, the use of opioid medications comes with significant risks and side effects. Due to increasing numbers of prescriptions to those with chronic pain, opioid medications have become more expensive while becoming less effective due to the buildup of patient tolerance. The idea of opioid-free analgesic techniques has rarely been breached in many hospitals. Emerging research has shown that opioid-sparing approaches have resulted in lower reported pain scores across the board, as well as significant cost reductions to hospitals and insurance agencies. In addition to providing adequate pain relief, the predicted cost burden of an opioid-free or opioid-sparing approach is significantly less than traditional methods. Methods The following groups were considered in our inclusion criteria: those who speak the English language, all races and ethnicities, male or female, home medications, those who are at least 18 years of age and able to provide written informed consent, those undergoing inpatient or same-day surgical procedures. In addition, our scoping review includes the following exclusion criteria: those who are non-English speaking, those who are less than 18 years of age, those who are not undergoing surgical procedures while admitted, those who are unable to provide numeric pain score due to clinical status, those who are unable to provide written informed consent, and those who decline participation in the study. Data was extracted by one reviewer and verified by the remaining two group members. Extraction was divided as equally as possible among the 11 listed references. Discrepancies in data extraction were discussed between the article reviewer, project editor, and group leader. Results We identified nine primary sources addressing the use of ketamine as an alternative to opioid analgesia and post-operative pain control. Our findings indicate a positive correlation between perioperative ketamine administration and postoperative pain control. While this information provides insight on opioid-free analgesia, it also revealed the limited amount of research conducted in this area of practice. The strategies for several of the clinical trials limited ketamine administration to a small niche of patients. The included studies provided evidence for lower pain scores, reductions in opioid consumption, and better patient outcomes. Implications for Nursing Practice Based on the results of the studies’ randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, the effects of ketamine are shown as an adequate analgesic alternative to opioids postoperatively. The cited resources showed that ketamine can be used as a sole agent, or combined effectively with reduced doses of opioids for multimodal therapy. There were noted limitations in some of the research articles. Not all of the cited studies were able to include definitive evidence of proper blinding techniques or randomization methods. Small sample sizes and the inclusion of specific patient populations identified within several of the studies can skew data in one direction or another; therefore, significant clinical results cannot be generalized to patient populations across the board.
