The first-, second- and third-order shear deformation plate theories are applied in this work to model thick rectangular sandwich plates with through-width delamination. The models are based on the concept of the four equivalent single layers and the system of exact kinematic conditions. Three different scenarios are considered: the failure of the core, the delamination between the top facesheet and the core, and finally, the case when the delamination takes place in the local midplane of the top facesheet. A general model is derived and applied to sandwich plates with Lévy type boundary conditions. The governing equations are summarized and the state-space model of the system is created. The mechanical fields are calculated and compared to finite element results. The comparison shows that the first-order sandwich plate model is inaccurate, on the other hand, the second- and third-order theories capture very well the mechanical fields compared to finite element results. The J-integral distribution is also calculated along the delamination front and it is concluded that the third- and second-order models give very good approximations of the results by finite element analysis and the virtual crack closure technique.

A model for crinoid plate circlet homologies is proposed based on a tricyclic (four-circlet) aboral cup, with Aethocrinus the characteristic tricyclic crinoid. The plate circlets in the aboral cup of Aethocrinus, from bottom to top, are lintels (named herein), infrabasals, basals, and radials. In this model, traditional interpretation is maintained for the aboral cup plates of most crinoids. Cladids, flexibles, articulates (primitively), and diplobathrid camerates are dicyclic and are composed of infrabasal, basal, and radial circlets. Monobathrid camerates are monocyclic, and they have basal and radial circlets. Disparid plate circlet homologies are reinterpreted. Among disparids, “basals” are lintels, “inferradials” and “radials” are infrabasals, and “superradials” are radials.The “Law of Wachsmuth and Springer” is judged to be a relationship that has most fidelity applied to lumen angles. This “law” is considered to be only a consequence of development and not an invariable basis by which to determine plate homologies. In the model presented here, plates cannot be shifted around after the juvenile calyx is sutured, and arms may grow on either radials or infrabasals, whichever plates are at the top of the cup when arms begin to grow.

In shipyards, hull curved plate formation is an important stage with respect to productivity and accuracy control of curved plates. Because the power and its distribution of induction heat source are easier to control and reproduce, induction heating is expected to be applied in the line heating process. This paper studies the moveable induction heating process of steel plate and develops a numerical model of electromagneticthermal coupling analysis and the numerical results consistent with the experimental results. The numerical model is used to analyze the temperature changing rules and the influences on plate temperature field of heating speed of moveable induction heating of steel plate, and the following conclusions are drawn. First, the process of moveable induction heating of steel plate can be divided into three phases of initial state, quasi-steady state, and end state. The temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the steel plate at the initial state is the biggest; it remains unchanged at the quasi-steady state and it is the smallest at the end state. Second, obvious end effect occurs when the edges of the steel plate are heated by the inductor, which causes a decrease in temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the steel plate that is unfavorable for formation of pillow shape plates. Third, with the increase of heating speed, the temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the steel plate increases gradually.

Abstract In order to study the application of nonlinear ultrasonic in the quantitative identification of defective aluminum plate, different depth cracks are machined on the aluminum alloy plate with a thickness of 10 mm by wire cutting to simulate the defects in the plate. The normal and defective aluminum plates are selected to establish the experimental model, and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is used to extract the characteristic parameters of the aluminum plate nonlinear ultrasonic signal. The dimensions of the data are reduced by principal component analysis (PCA), and the principal component with the top three contribution rate are selected as the characteristic value. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm is used to analyze the aluminum alloy plate state and classify the defect signal. The experimental results show that the feasibility of nonlinear ultrasonic signal recognition of aluminum plate defects is verified by combining principal component analysis and support vector machine model.

This paper analyse the force of the column base plate which suffering the axial pressure. First, the comparative analysis between the traditional model and interaction model is made. Second, for the steel frame, sole plate and concreat base as a entirety, analyse the factor which affect the stress distribution of sole plate and base top at the different working condition. Result shows that, there is a big gap on the result between the traditional model and interaction model, difference of length-wide ratio of box column section have a small affect on the stress of base top. The change of concreat strength have a big affect on the sole plate and concreat stress distribution.

In the present paper, an accurate 3D finite element model is presented for bucking analysis of soft-core rectangular sandwich plates. The sandwich plate is composed of three layers: top and bottom skins and core layer. Finite element model of the problem has been constructed in the ANSYS 11.0 standard code area. The effect of geometrical parameters of the sandwich plate is studied. Comparison of the present results with those of plate theories confirms the accuracy of the proposed model. The overall buckling loads calculated by FE model are higher than that of the accurate results and the maximum discrepancy is less than 10 percent.

This paper presents the geometrically nonlinear analysis of smart sandwich plates. The top surface of the plate is integrated with a layer of commercially available active fiber composite. Considering the First order shear deformation theory individually for each layer of the sandwich plate, a three-dimensional finite element model has been developed. The performance of active fiber composite for the smart control of geometrically nonlinear deflection of the sandwich plates has been studied and numerical results are presented.

The static response of imperfect composites and sandwich laminates subjected to in-plane partial edge loading is studied. An efficient finite element model based on a refined plate theory is developed for the present purpose. In this theory, the transverse shear stresses are continuous at the layer interfaces along with stress free conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. The imperfection is considered in the form of in-plane displacement jumps at the layer interfaces, which is characterized by a linear spring-layer model. It is quite encouraging to note that the plate model having all these refined features requires unknowns only at the reference plane. However, this theory demands C1continuity of transverse displacement at the element edges, which is difficult to accommodate arbitrarily in any existing finite element. To deal with this problem a new triangular element developed by the authors is used in the present study.

Sandwich plates have been extensively used in many engineering applications such as automotive and aerospace. In the present paper, an accurate finite element model is presented for bending analysis of soft-core rectangular sandwich plates. The sandwich plate is composed of three layers: top and bottom skins and core layer. The core is assumed as a soft orthotropic material and skins are assumed generally unequal laminated composites. Finite element model of the problem has been constructed in the ANSYS 11.0 standard code area. Continuity conditions of transverse shear stresses at the interfaces are satisfied as well as the conditions of zero transverse shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces of plate. Also transverse flexibility and transverse normal strain and stress of core are considered. The effect of geometrical parameters of the sandwich plate are studied. Comparison of the present results with those of plate theories confirms the accuracy of the proposed model.

This thesis presents a study of the vibrational behaviour of the violin top plate and explores the possibility of using composite materials as a substitute for traditional wood in making top plates. Numerical simulations and experimental tests are compared to validate the results. The two most popular methods for numerical and experimental vibrational analysis, the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Experimental Modal Analysis are used, respectively. The vibrational behaviour of a spruce top plate is first studied by the two methods. The results show high coherence. Then the same modeling and testing techniques are applied on two composite plates. Results show that the vibrational behaviour of composite plates differs significantly from traditional wooden plates. Thus, suggestions for further improvement of the composite top plates are given.
Cette these propose une etude sur le comportement vibratoire de la table d'harmonie duviolon et explore la possibilite d'utiliser des materiaux composites comme un substitut pourle bois traditionnel dans la fabrication des tables d'harmonies. Des simulations numeriqueset des tests exprimentaux sont compares pour valider les resultats. Les deux methodes les plus populaires pour l'analyse vibratoire numerique et experimentale, la methode des elements nis (FEM) et l'analyse modale exprimentale sont utilises, respectivement. Le comportement vibratoire d'une table d'harmonie en epicea est d'abord etudiee par les deux methodes. Les resultats montrent une coherence forte. Puis la modelisation et même des techniques de test sont appliques sur deux plaques composites. Les resultats montrentque le comportement vibratoire de table d'harmonie composites differe sensiblement de plaques traditionnels en bois. Ainsi, des suggestions d'amelioration des tables d'harmonie composites du dessus sont donnes.

Colleges and universities worldwide are competing with one another to provide undergraduate students with top-tier learning experiences to increase and retain enrollment. Many institutions are developing living-learning communities to maximize non-academic learning, promote social development, and facilitate interactions among students, faculty, and staff. This study was a mixed-methods, single case study of a living-learning program at a top-tier, Midwestern university. The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore the effectiveness of an undergraduate residential living-learning community at a top-tier university in regards to student satisfaction and interaction, and to investigate elements of staff job satisfaction and long-term retention of housekeeping and mechanic employees. Data collection involved surveys, one-on-one interviews, and focus group interviews of key stakeholders. Three research questions informed the purpose of the study. The first research question asked whether the living-learning model provided an environment that encouraged learning and personal growth. Both the qualitative and descriptive findings supported that yes, the model does encourage learning and personal growth, but that there is still room for improvement, especially by contributing to students’ social development. The second research question asked whether the higher level of staffing among stakeholders resulted in a greater sense of safety, security, and satisfaction. Again, both the qualitative and descriptive findings supported that the model does so effectively, especially for housekeeping and mechanic employees. The third research question asked whether the model supported job satisfaction and long-term retention among housekeeping and mechanic employees. The surveys of these employees indicated that yes, the living-learning model, and especially having a permanent building assignment, contributed to job satisfaction and retention. To improve the program in the future, assessment should recognize housekeeping and mechanic employees as stakeholders in the living-learning community; the physical space should be continually and strategically updated to meet the mission and goals of the program; housekeeping and mechanic staff should be recruited and retained strategically. In order to ensure future prosperity, program leaders should continue to assess how effectively the mission and goals are being met.

The manipulation of electromagnetic radiation via the use of periodic arrays of sub-wavelength metallic structures (unit cells), nowadays named "metamaterials", has been known of in the microwave engineering community for over fifty years. In the last decade interest in such sub-wavelength structures grew, mainly due to their ability to interact with radiation in ways natural materials could not e.g. by producing a negative refractive index (NRI). This project sought to see whether NRI metamaterials could provide benefits to the mm and sub-mm wavelength astronomical instrumentation currently in use. To aid rapid design and optimisation of devices made from a cascaded set of metamaterial unit cells, a hybridised Transmission Line (TL) model was developed where the matrix components used in the TL model were "seeded" with data taken from a Finite Element Method (FEM) model of a simpler structure. A comparison between the two found that the TL model was capable of providing results that differed from the FEM model by no more than ~10E−4 for the transmitted intensity, |S21|^2, and <1° for transmitted phase, arg(S21). A slab of material with a refractive index, n = −1, can exhibit an effect known as "superlensing". A three unit cell thick NRI slab was designed, manufactured and experimentally tested. It was found to be capable of producing an NRI across a fractional band of at least 21%, producing a refractive index value of n = −1 at around 90 GHz. The experimental and simulated transmission and reflection data show good match with each other. A highly birefringent air gap Half Wave Plate (HWP) was designed, manufactured and experimentally tested. Defining its useful bandwidth as the region where the phase difference, is equal to (−180 ± 3)° a single HWP had a fractional bandwidth of 0.3%. The bandwidth was extended by using the Pancharatnam method, developed in the 1950's to produce highly achromatic optical wave plates. The method however is applicable to other frequencies and polarisation control technologies. Optimising a three HWP TL-based Pancharatnam model, the HWP's modelled fractional bandwidth increased to 6.6%. Experimental data agrees with the model showing a plateauing of the phase difference at −180°. A highly birefringent polypropylene embedded Quarter Wave Plate (QWP) was also designed, manufactured and tested. Defining its useful bandwidth as the region where the differential phase is (90 ± 2)° a single QWP produced a fractional bandwidth of 0.6%. By optimising a four QWP TL-based Pancharatnam model, the QWP's performance was improved to 7.8%. Experimental data, whilst not in complete agreement with the model does show a reduction in the gradient of phase difference where it crossed 90°. It was found that current designs for NRI metamaterials fall short of the standards required to be used in quasi-optical astronomical instrumentation due to high dispersion and absorption. The high dispersion limits NRI metamaterials to uses in instruments built for narrowband applications. Whilst the Pancharatnam method can increase bandwidths where a flat differential phase response is required, this comes at the cost of increased absorption. To reach their full potential, NRI metamaterials' lossiness must be reduced e.g. possibly by cryogenic means or the use of "active" metamaterials.

Afin d’expliciter les modes d’influence intervenant dans les Dialogues de Platon, nous étudions de quelle manière se déploie la magie notamment de Socrate, qui est présenté comme un sorcier par plusieurs interlocuteurs. Une étude générale préliminaire sur la magie portant sur l’anthropologie, les rituels, pathologiques (troubles obsessionnels-compulsifs) ou culturels, et enfin la pensée magique nous fournit un cadre pour envisager comment se manifeste l’influence chez Platon. Différents facteurs influent sur les modes de pensée des individus souvent à leur insu : personnalité, habitudes, société, éthique, ignorance, etc.. La magie oratoire est pratiquée, depuis Gorgias, par divers experts du discours comme les orateurs ou les sophistes, ce qui révèle l’ambiguïté de la magie de Socrate, alors qu’il prétend éliminer le faux et les illusions. Dans le Phèdre, différents types de possession se produisent, certaines incontrôlées, d’autres contrôlées, impliquant un processus d’initiation. La magie de Socrate trouve encore à s’illustrer avec plusieurs cas d’envoûtement marquants, mais aussi un usage d’incantations notamment pour traiter la crainte de la mort. Dans le domaine politique, le législateur recourt aussi aux incantations pour plus d’efficacité, vu qu’elles agissent sur la forme des comportements, contribuent à souder les citoyens et participent au contrôle social. To explain the modes of influence operating in Plato’s Dialogues, we study how Socrates and others use their magic as several interlocutors have called Socrates a sorcerer. A framework is given to our research with a preliminary general study about magic covering anthropology, rituals – pathological (obsessive-compulsive disorders) or cultural – and magical thought. In Plato’s works, the way people think is influenced by many factors often unknowingly: personality, habits, society, ethics, ignorance, etc. Since it had been analyzed by Gorgias, speech experts, such as orators or sophists, have been using oratorical magic in their performances. And then the ambiguity of Socrates’ magic blatantly appears whereas he claims to refute falsehood and eliminate illusions. Different types of possession occur in Phaedrus, some uncontrolled, other controlled, entailing an initiation. Socrates carries out his magic in several striking cases of bewitchment and he also uses incantations in particular to sooth the fear of death. In the political field, the lawgiver finds an interest in using incantations for more effectiveness in his task since they can shape the forms of behaviors, create strong bond between citizens and contribute to social control. A law about crimes of magic is also designed

Multi-Object Adaptive Optics promises to be a useful tool for the upcoming class of Extremely Large Telescopes. Like current adaptive optics systems, MOAO systems compensate optical aberrations caused by atmospheric turbulence, but with the added benefit of being able to compensate multiple portions of a telescope’s field at the same time. To ensure the success of the eventual MOAO systems built for the ELTs, several demonstrator instruments have been designed and tested on current telescopes. Raven is one of these demonstrators, designed by the University of Victoria Adaptive Optics Lab for the Subaru 8.2 meter telescope to feed the InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph. Raven corrects the light of two science targets using wavefront information from three natural guide stars, and a single laser guide star. The topic of this thesis is the design and implementation of Raven’s tip/tilt compensation system, used to stabilize the output image positions on IRCS’s 0.140” slit. Tip/tilt correction of the science targets is done using a combination of motorized pick-off arms, piezoelectric tip/tilt platforms, and deformable mirrors. Through digital filtering and calibration, it is shown that these actuators are able to collectively keep the output science images stationary during simulated laboratory observations. A performance reduction due to residual tip/tilt errors is expected to be less than 5%. Raven goes on-sky in mid-2014, and it will be the first MOAO instrument to attempt scientific observations.

AbstractStructural runtime models provide a snapshot of the constituents of a system and their state. Capturing the history of runtime models, i.e., previous snapshots, has been shown to be useful for a number of aims. Handling, however, history at runtime poses important challenges to tool support. We present the InTempo tool which is based on the Eclipse Modeling Framework and encodes runtime models as graphs. Key features of InTempo, such as, the integration of temporal requirements into graph queries, the in-memory storage of the model, and a systematic method to contain the model’s memory consumption, intend to address issues which seemingly place limitations on the available tool support. InTempo offers two operation modes which support both runtime and postmortem application scenarios.

AbstractSince the very first introduction of three-dimensional (3–D) vertical-channel (VC) NAND Flash memory arrays, gate-induced drain leakage (GIDL) current has been suggested as a solution to increase the string channel potential to trigger the erase operation. Thanks to that erase scheme, the memory array can be built directly on the top of a $$n^+$$ n + plate, without requiring any p-doped region to contact the string channel and therefore allowing to simplify the manufacturing process and increase the array integration density. For those reasons, the understanding of the physical phenomena occurring in the string when GIDL is triggered is important for the proper design of the cell structure and of the voltage waveforms adopted during erase. Even though a detailed comprehension of the GIDL phenomenology can be achieved by means of technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations, they are usually time and resource consuming, especially when realistic string structures with many word-lines (WLs) are considered. In this chapter, an analysis of the GIDL-assisted erase in 3–D VC nand memory arrays is presented. First, the evolution of the string potential and GIDL current during erase is investigated by means of TCAD simulations; then, a compact model able to reproduce both the string dynamics and the threshold voltage transients with reduced computational effort is presented. The developed compact model is proven to be a valuable tool for the optimization of the array performance during erase assisted by GIDL. Then, the idea of taking advantage of GIDL for the erase operation is exported to the context of spiking neural networks (SNNs) based on NOR Flash memory arrays, which require operational schemes that allow single-cell selectivity during both cell program and cell erase. To overcome the block erase typical of nor Flash memory arrays based on Fowler-Nordheim tunneling, a new erase scheme that triggers GIDL in the NOR Flash cell and exploits hot-hole injection (HHI) at its drain side to accomplish the erase operation is presented. Using that scheme, spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) is implemented in a mainstream NOR Flash array and array learning is successfully demonstrated in a prototype SNN. The achieved results represent an important step for the development of large-scale neuromorphic systems based on mature and reliable memory technologies.

AbstractAlthough the construction of concrete piles has a relevant environmental footprint, they are commonly used to reduce settlements of embankments on soft soil strata. A more sustainable choice to further reduce settlements (and, consequently, the number of piles) is to place geosynthetics below the embankment. However, existing design methods cannot calculate settlements at the embankment top and cannot be used to optimise the number of piles in a displacement-based design. In this note, an innovative model for assessing settlements at the top of Geosynthetic-Reinforced and Pile-Supported embankments induced by the embankment construction process is presented and validated against finite difference numerical analyses. The model is used to optimise the design of both piles and geosynthetic, and applied to a practical example, where the mass of CO2 saved by designing geosynthetics to reduce the pile number. This chapter demonstrates how Cicero’s adaptation of Plato in his three dialogues De Oratore, De Re Publica, and De Legibus (as well as his translation of the Timaeus) reflects his desire to become a similar model of classical prose. An overview of Plato’s Hellenistic reception shows that he had become a weighty authority who could be used to support even discordant philosophical systems. Cicero learned this fact at first hand in the bitter quarrel between his two instructors (and members of Plato’s Academy) Philo of Larissa and Antiochus of Ascalon. But it was not just Academics who haggled over Plato: as classicism began to take hold in the Greek world, Plato became an important authority for Stoics and Peripatetics too. For Cicero, who desired to become a figure of similarly classical authority as the founder of Roman philosophy, Plato was the only logical choice of model.

This paper aims to study the pressure distribution and flow patterns in the top fuel region of the AP1000™ reactor using CFD. This study is being performed as part of a CFD evaluation of the flow in the top fuel and upper plenum regions of a PWR reactor vessel. The flow patterns, including cross flows in the top fuel region, are inter-related with the flow distribution and pressure forces in the reactor vessel upper plenum region. Before detailed computations of the flow in the whole top fuel and upper plenum region are performed, conducting local computations for segments of the domain can provide information about physical aspects of the flow as well as mesh sensitivities. The domain of interest in this paper is the top fuel region including the upper part of the fuel assembly (top grid, fuel rods, top nozzle), upper core plate, and core component hold-down device. The commercial CFD computer code STAR-CCM+ is employed to generate the computational mesh, to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow with a Realizable k-epsilon turbulence model, and to post-process the results. The complicated geometry of the top fuel region needs to be simplified so that the mesh size for the CFD model of the whole upper plenum and top fuel region does not exceed current software and hardware capabilities. In this study, several different trimmed meshes have been generated to study the effects of the geometries of the hold-down device and the lateral flows. Mesh sensitivity studies have been conducted for each individual part, i.e., the top grid, top nozzle, upper core plate, and hold-down device, in order to determine the proper geometrical simplifications. Pressure drop measurement data are compared with the predicted CFD results and act as a guideline for the mesh selection. These studies support the applicability of the geometrically simplified models and chosen mesh size for the CFD model of the full upper plenum and top fuel regions.

Continuous three roller bending process is widely used in practice to bend the plates into cylinders. Bending load for plate material under bending is affected by plate thickness, width and shell diameter combinations. Maximum top roller load is encountered during the edge pre-bending stage as top roller is set at an offset distance from its mid position. Shell diameter, thickness and material for cylindrical structural element to be produced are fixed by design. Width of the plate for roller bending decides number of cylindrical segments required to achieve the designed shell length. Maximum pre-bending width depends on maximum top roller load imparting capacity. Looking to the above considerations, maximum width which can be pre-bend at limiting top roller load (for designed shell diameter, thickness and material combinations) specifies the capacity. Presented work aims at developing the mathematical model of top roller load for pre-bending. Top roller offset for pre-bending were calculated based on practical top roller pre-bending load data, for different grades of C-Mn steel plates (as per ASME sec II part-A). Based on these top roller offsets, finite element analysis (FEA) of pre-bending stage were performed using Hyperform LS-DYNA. Effect of co-efficient of friction at roller plate interfaces was analyzed. FE simulation of pre-bending of cladded plate (54 mm thick C-Mn steel plate of material grade SA-387Gr11Cl2 having 3 mm thick layer of stain less steel material grade SS-308) was performed. FEA load results were found in good agreement with the practical load results and can be used for capacity assessment and analysis of roller bending machines.

Similar to the manner in which heave plates provide a Truss Spar with low global motions, a heave plate system can be used to significantly mitigate the motions of a conventional semi-submersible. This paper will focus on the global performance of a conventional semi-submersible that has been properly configured with heave plates. The design case is a Gulf of Mexico deepwater environment similar to that for a Spar located in 5,600 feet of water. The system has eight top-tensioned risers (TTR) supported on the top of the semi hull with tensioners, a spread mooring and a 10,000-ton operating payload. Extensive global motion analyses and comprehensive model testing have been carried out to validate the in-place behavior of such a solution. This paper presents the validation results from the analytical prediction and the model test. A semi-submersible with properly configured heave plates can be used as a viable deepwater dry-tree floating solution in such harsh environments as in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of its superior motion characteristics, this solution is also more SCR friendly and can be a better wet-tree application as compared to conventional semi-submersibles. The analytical and model test results demonstrate that the excitation of a semi-submersible hull by wind, wave and current can be adequately mitigated by the proper placement and sizing of a heave plate system. The analysis and testing also indicates that to achieve suitable motions in a cost effective manner requires incorporating fabrication and installation issues into the heave plate system. The in-place behavior of this solution has been validated and thus proving the concept provides a viable cost effective dry-tree floating solution for deepwater developments.

This paper describes a materials and computational model based analysis utilized to design an engineered “overpack” container capable of maintaining structural integrity for confinement of transuranic wastes undergoing the cryo-vacuum stress based “Bag-Buster” process and satisfying DOT 7A waste package requirements. The engineered overpack is a key component of the “Ultra-BagBuster” process/system being commercially developed by UltraTech International for potential DOE applications to non-intrusively breach inner confinement layers (poly bags/packaging) within transuranic (TRU) waste drums. This system provides a lower cost/risk approach to mitigate hydrogen gas concentration buildup limitations on transport of high alpha activity organic transuranic wastes. Four evolving overpack design configurations and two materials (low carbon steel and 300 series stainless) were considered and evaluated using non-linear finite element model analyses of structural response. Properties comparisons show that 300-series stainless is required to provide assurance of ductility and structural integrity at both room and cryogenic temperatures. The overpack design were analyzed for five accidental drop impact orientations onto an unyielding surface (dropped flat on bottom, bottom corner, side, top corner, and top). The first three design configurations failed the bottom and top corner drop orientations (flat bottom, top, and side plates breached or underwent material failure). The fourth design utilized a protruding rim-ring (skirt) below the overpack’s bottom plate and above the overpack’s lid plate to absorb much of the impact energy and maintained structural integrity under all accidental drop loads at both room and cryogenic temperature conditions. Selected drop testing of the final design will be required to confirm design performance.

Heat transfer enhancement by nanofluids is an emerging and innovative technology for traditional heat transfer problems. However, researches of nanofluids for refrigeration applications are rare either theoretically or experimentally. In this paper, the physical model of a freezing chucker is considered as a two-dimensional domain which is consist of the top and bottom copper plates, and a channel for flowing of copper nanofluids. Inlet flow passes through the left hand side and exhausts to the outlet at right hand side. Three kinds of transverse rib structures, e/Dh = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, are attached on the internal top wall of the channel for heat transfer enhancement of the coolant flows. To investigate this problem, the transient heat transfer of this channel flow is analyzed and transport problems are solved numerically for the ethylene-glycol (EG) based nanofluids mixture of copper nano-particles with volume fractions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 5%, respectively. The smooth channel problem is analyzed and compared to the ribbed channel problem. Analyses of the highest decay rate, the lowest temperature, and temperature distributions of the top-plate surface of a freezing chucker are shown.

In the present study, a new trigonometric higher-order shear and normal deformation theory is proposed and implemented to investigate the free vibration characteristics of functionally graded material (FGM) plates. The present theory comprises the nonlinear variation in the in-plane and transverse displacement and accommodates, both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects. It also satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without requiring any shear correction factor. The governing equations are derived using the variational principle. The effective mechanical properties of FGM plates are assumed to vary according to a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Poisson’s ratios of FGM plates are assumed constant. The numerical solution has been obtained using an efficient displacement based C0 finite element model with eight degrees of freedom per node. The computed results are compared with 3-dimensional and quasi-3-dimensional solutions and those projected by other well-known plate theories. Natural frequencies of the functionally graded plates with various side-to-thickness ratios, boundary conditions, and volume fraction index ‘n’ have been computed. It can be concluded that the proposed model is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the vibration behavior of functionally graded plates.

This paper deals with superharmonic resonance of electrostatically actuated MEMS resonator sensors. The system consists of a MEMS cantilever on top of a parallel ground plate. An AC voltage of frequency near one fourth the natural frequency of the resonator provides the electrostatic force of actuation. The frequency response of the superharmonic resonance of the structure is investigated using two term Reduced Order Model (ROM) method.

The critical heat flux (CHF) during saturated pool boiling of water was investigated experimentally using a honeycomb porous plate attached to a heated surface. In a previous study, we demonstrated that the CHF by a honeycomb porous plate was enhanced to more than twice compared with that of a plain surface. According to the proposed capillary limit model, the CHF can be increased by decreasing the thickness of the honeycomb porous plate. However, the CHF could not be greatly enhanced when the thickness of the honeycomb porous plate was comparable to the thickness of the thin liquid film (the macro-layer thickness) formed beneath coalescent vapor bubbles. The results of this study showed that honeycomb porous plates for CHF enhancement in saturated pool boiling should be constructed by the superposition of two kinds of porous materials and that each of the honeycomb porous plates must fulfill two conditions. First, a honeycomb porous plate simply attached to a heated surface should have very fine pores to supply water to the heated surface due to strong capillary action, and the honeycomb porous plates should be as thin as possible to decrease the pressure drop caused by internal water flow. Second, the other honeycomb porous plate, stacked on top of the thin honeycomb porous plate, needs to be structured to hold a sufficient amount of water in order to prevent the inside of the honeycomb porous plate from drying out during the bubble hovering period on the plate.

In this work modeling of a vibro-acoustic system and global sound field control with both acoustic and structural actuators have been studied. The model of the system consists of a 3D rectangular cavity with five acoustically rigid walls and a flexible plate on the top of cavity. First, modeling of the vibro-acoustic system has been acquired and subsequently the mode shapes and natural frequencies of the coupled system have been calculated. Plane waves on the plate surface are the main sources of disturbances in this system. Undesired sound (noise) which is propagated into the enclosure is controlled by mounted piezoelectric patch actuators on the plate and acoustic piston sources (speakers) inside cavity. The global active control is designed to minimize the acoustic potential energy inside the cavity. The control performance has been investigated by acoustic and structural actuators separately and simultaneously.

This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads and provides in-plane stability of the arch. A methodology for laboratory testing of the prototype models of wooden arches subjected to different types of loads was developed. Two prototypes of wooden arches were tested with rectangular cross-sections and two T-section ones subjected to the loading across the span, and two prototypes subjected to the half-span loading. In total, eight arches were tested. Deflections of arches, cross-section deformations and arch thrust force were recorded. The arches were tested until failure. The results of testing revealed insufficient stability of the arches with rectangular cross-section in the horizontal plane. For the arches with T-section the whole arch rib was damaged, the in-plane stability was ensured by the T-section. The collapsing force of the T-section arch was about 1.3 times greater than the collapsing force of the rectangular section arches.

Cold-recycling treatments are gaining popularity in the United States because of their economic and environmental benefits. Curing is the most critical phase for these treatments. Curing is the process where emulsion breaks and water evaporates, leaving residual binder in the treated material. In this process, the cold-recycled mix gains strength. Sufficient strength is required before opening the cold-treated layer to traffic or placing an overlay. Otherwise, premature failure, related to insufficient strength and trapped moisture, would be expected. However, some challenges arise from the lack of relevant information and specifications to monitor treatment curing. This report presents the outcomes of a research project funded by the Illinois Department for Transportation to investigate the feasibility of using the nondestructive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for density and moisture content estimation of cold-recycled treatments. Monitoring moisture content is an indicator of curing level; treated layers must meet a threshold of maximum allowable moisture content (2% in Illinois) to be considered sufficiently cured. The methodology followed in this report included GPR numerical simulations and GPR indoor and field tests for data sources. The data were used to correlate moisture content to dielectric properties calculated from GPR measurements. Two models were developed for moisture content estimation: the first is based on numerical simulations and the second is based on electromagnetic mixing theory and called the Al-Qadi-Cao-Abufares (ACA) model. The simulation model had an average error of 0.33% for moisture prediction for five different field projects. The ACA model had an average error of 2% for density prediction and an average root-mean-square error of less than 0.5% for moisture content prediction for both indoor and field tests. The ACA model is presented as part of a developed user-friendly tool that could be used in the future to continuously monitor curing of cold-recycled treatments.

The World Health Organization and World Bank (2011) estimate that there are more than 1 billion people with disabilities in the world. To address this population’s diverse needs, the United Nations drafted their Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2006. Article 24 (Education) of the CRPD requires ratifying countries to develop an inclusive education system to address the educational needs of students with disabilities alongside their peers without disabilities. Despite substantive improvements and movement toward inclusive education, many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) continue to struggle with accurately identifying and supporting students with disabilities, including knowing how to effectively screen, evaluate, and qualify students for additional services (Hayes, Dombrowski, Shefcyk, & Bulat, 2018a). These challenges stem from the lack of policies, practices, and qualified staff related to screening and identification. As a result, many students with less-apparent disabilities—such as children with learning disabilities—remain unidentified and do not receive the academic supports they need to succeed in school (Friend & Bursuck, 2012). This guide attempts to address the lack of appropriate, useful disability screening and identification systems and services as countries look to educate all students in inclusive settings. Specifically, this guide introduces viable options for screening and identification related to vision, hearing, and learning disabilities in inclusive classrooms in LMICs. It also provides guidance on how LMICs can transition from an assessment-center model toward a school-based identification model that better serves an inclusive education system.

This paper studies the impact of extreme weather events on the local tax revenue across Colombian municipalities. We follow a two-step approach to evaluate to what extent a municipality’s tax revenue depends on natural disasters taking place both locally and in its trade partners. In the first step, we estimate a gravity model of bilateral trade and construct a trade flow matrix allowing us to measure the strength of the economic relationships between cities. To do so, we build a novel dataset describing the inter-city trade flows for road transported goods in Colombia for the period 2015–2019. In the second step, we use spatial models to estimate the externalities of extreme weather events. Our results reveal that natural disasters in the destination cities increase the tax revenue in the origin city. We provide evidence of the capacity of trade to mitigate the negative effects of natural disasters.
