V příspěvku autoři hodnotí svoji každodenní zkušenost s výukou heterogenních studijních skupin na vysoké škole. V první části autoři popisují typické složení studijní skupiny kurzů „Angličtiny pro zdravotníky“ a charakterizují studenty z hlediska vstupní jazykové competence a věkového složení. Pozornost je věnována problematice jazykových vloh a motivace. V druhé části jsou prezentovány praktické výukové komponenty používané s cílem maximalizovat aktivní zapojení a jazykový růst každého jednotlivého studenta. Praktická zkušenost je reflektována ve vztahu k aktuálním výukovým metodám. Diskutované strategie zahrnují adaptace a diferenciace výukových materiálů a úkolů, vybrané formy kooperativního učení, individualizace výuky a změny v prostorovém uspořádání tříd. Závěrem autoři doporučují kombinovat úspěšné výukové komponenty s ohledem na konkrétní heterogenní skupiny

The purpose of this article is an analysis of the cultural integration of the Ukrainian and Vietnamese immigrants who have the right of residence in Poland and of their strategy for adaption. The subject of the survey included such issues as the attitudes of the immigrants to their own culture and to Polish culture; the degree of cultural integration measured by their knowledge of the Polish language; contacts with Polish society and selected collective cultural characteristics (e.g. the level of social trust and the willingness to cooperate on the basis of ethnic ties) which affect the strategy for adaption. Marital relations are also taken into account (mixed and unmixed), the sex and age of the immigrants (especially the age at which the immigrants embarked on their cultural integration) and their attitudes to cultural integration. The article discusses the differences between the levels of cultural integration of the two groups and the consequences of such differences. The author argues that a strategy of assimilation predominates among the Ukrainians, while one of integration dominates among the Vietnamese.

The social representations presented approach digital pedagogy as problematic. This is not to say that the technologies are problematic but rather to recognize that their integration into universities in Côte dIvoire raises questions of primary importance. The study focuses on the reserved or unfavorable opinions of students regarding digital university pedagogy. The approach is to highlight the factors of possible reluctance and to propose remedial measures in order to obtain positive changes in students behaviors in the era of digital university pedagogy. This investigation is part of an empirical-theoretical approach and is based on the critical theories of digital education and on Maio and Olsons (2000) model of behavior change, because, persuasion results from exposure to a communication. The data of the survey is the result of a mixed approach (quantitative method through a questionnaire and qualitative method through focus group) on a total sample of one hundred (100) students from two public universities. The social polemics around the digital pedagogy are translated by reticences related to the digital divide, presuppositions on the university considered as an ideological and hegemonic company.

ABSTRACT This paper examines how firms design performance measurement systems (PMSs) to support the pursuit of mixed strategies. In particular, we examine the implications of firms' joint strategic emphasis on both low cost and differentiation for their use of performance measurement and incentive compensation. Analysis of survey data of 387 firms shows that more than half of the sample to some extent or fully mixes strategic priorities, while strategic priorities resembling strategic archetypes (primarily low cost or differentiation) populate only 36 percent of the sample. Our analyses support that, as compared to archetypal strategies, pursuing mixed strategies elicits design of more comprehensive and complex PMSs that are aimed at balancing effort and decisions toward the multiple strategies pursued.

Recent decades have seen many localities revisiting traditional town center-style development as a response to problems caused by sprawl. In some cases, these more compact developments occur in areas that are otherwise primarily suburban in character. Of the many facets of these developments, parking has one of the largest impacts on the compactness, walkability, and accessibility of those developments, but little information, academic or otherwise, exists to inform the planning of parking for mixed-use projects in an otherwise suburban environment. Many localities rely on zoning-based parking minimums, but a lack of situational parking strategies may limit the benefits of these suburban mixed-use projects. In an effort to ascertain trends or best practices in a suburban context, information on eleven mixed-use developments was collected from planners and developers. In addition, quantitative data related to the mix of uses and amount of parking in similar developments was obtained from Urban Land Institute case studies. The analysis revealed that in general, suburban municipalities do not capitalize on potential parking reductions created by mixing uses, do not truly share parking between uses, and do not implement parking regulation in the form of time limits or pricing. In a few cases, there were exceptions to these general trends, with some developments implementing detailed shared parking plans that have thus far been successful in balancing demand and supply. The related quantitative analysis suggests that the most important strategy as it relates to parking is to have a varied mix of uses in the development, with attention to those that have opposite peak times. Based on the case studies and shared parking analyses, recommendations for effective parking strategies for suburban, mixed-use development include: development of a shared parking plan, the use of ULI\'s Shared Parking as a starting point but not a final determinant in those shared parking plans, the use of proffers to require periodic checks on the shared parking supply, and ongoing local parking studies to better understand local need.

The purpose of this case study is to evaluate two methods of strategic planning within organizational visioning: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis and Appreciative inquiry (Ai).  SWOT analysis is a method of strategic planning that is popular within companies and organizations due to its simple, yet thorough, approach.  Ai has recently emerged as an approach to strategic visioning and planning within organizational development.  However, little research has been conducted to evaluate either approach to organizational visioning, and there is a growing need to compare the two techniques.  In this case study, participants within one organization were divided, with half of the staff participating in Ai and the other half participating in SWOT.  Data for this mixed methods study was gathered through observation, focus group interviews, and pre-test, post-test, and delayed post assessments tests.  Through the explanatory sequential design, quantitative data evaluated the change in organizational commitment and vision clarity as a result of the interventions; while, qualitative data further explored participants\' perception of the intervention process and resulting effects.  The study found a statistically significant interaction between intervention treatments and the pre-test and post-test scores within the organizational commitment construct.  Seven themes emerged from the qualitative data; however, only two themes were specifically associated with an intervention treatment.  Participants in the SWOT intervention described the visioning process to be frustrating and negative; while, Ai participants found that the visioning process confirmed many of their beliefs and values about the department.  Recommendations for future practice suggest the use of Strengths, Opportunities, Aspiration, Results (SOAR) as an approach that combines and maximizes Ai and SWOT.  Suggestions for future research are to explore SWOT as a precursor to di-visioning within the Visioning Process Model.

Attitude control laws that use control moment gyros (CMGs) and momentum wheels are derived with nonlinear techniques. The control laws command the CMGs to provide rapid angular acceleration and the momentum wheels to reject tracking and initial condition errors. Numerical simulations of derived control laws are compared. A trend analysis is performed to examine the benefits of the derived controllers. We describe the design of a CMG built using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment. A mixed attitude control strategy is implemented on the spacecraft simulator at Virginia Tech.

Mixing plays a substantial role in determining the overall performance of a bioreactor. Well mixing in bioreactor, especially for ethanolic fermentation process is important for the homogenization of miscible and immiscible liquids, gas dispersion and suspension of solid particles. Improper mixing will eventually affect the biological and kinetics reactions occurring in the bioreactor and subsequently deteriorate the bioreactor performance. Currently, most modeling and control applications of bioreactors have been devoted to ideally mixed assumption, for simplicity. This is not realistic in practical applications. Furthermore, the strength and accuracy of the bioreactor models reflect their performance and subsequently its control strategy. Therefore, it is vital to consider the imperfect mixing for the control of bioreactor.In this study, a batch, micro-aerobic bioreactor for ethanolic fermentation process will be considered for modeling. Up to date, not much study has been conducted in exploiting the mixing mechanism for controlling this type of bioreactor. Traditionally, only the bioreactor conditions such as temperature and pH are controlled for such a batch bioreactor. Other parameters, such as aeration rate and stirrer speed are not used to control the bioreactor. Thus, it is difficult to improve the bioreactor performance as the bioreactor performance is less sensitive to both temperature and pH than to the mixing mechanism. However, the mixing behaviour of the bioreactor needs to be captured if we are to employ both aeration rate and stirrer speed for the control of such a batch bioreactor.It is known that aeration rate and stirrer speed could significantly affect the biological and kinetics reactions. Therefore, both aeration rate and stirrer speed are suggested in this work as manipulated variables in the modeling of batch bioreactor. Thus, with this approach the ideally mixed assumption will be relaxed.The models proposed will be implemented for control studies. New control strategies will be established for continuous bioreactor, whereby dilution rate and substrate concentration are considered as disturbance variables and both aeration rate and stirrer speed are suggested as manipulated variables. With this approach, the practicability of the proposed models could be investigated.The aims of this research have therefore been as follows: 1. To experimentally study the impact of aeration rate and stirrer speed on the bioreactor performances, i.e. yield and productivity. 2. To develop an integrated bioreactor model to allow us to employ the aeration rate and stirrer speed as manipulated variables for control design. 3. To establish new control strategies for bioreactor without the ideally mixed assumption.A systematic approach has been proposed to develop the non-ideally mixed bioreactor model and to design the control strategy of the lab-scale fermentation process. Three modeling approaches are employed, i.e. data-based, kinetics hybrid and kinetics multi-scale models for the analysis of the impacts of both aeration rate and stirrer speed on the performance of bioreactor. Using the three models, the aeration rate and stirrer speed are also used to analyze the mixing mechanism in the bioreactor.Furthermore, new control strategies are then proposed for the bioreactor. By using the proposed control strategies, the effect of both aeration rate and stirrer speed on the overall performance could be analyzed in the face of disturbances on other process parameters. Furthermore, the stability and achievable performance of the control strategies could be compared for different models. Hence, the proposed control strategies would lead to a better operation of the bioreactor.The study highlighted the following main findings: 1. It is identified that both aeration rate and stirrer speed could affect significantly the overall performance of the bioreactor. Therefore, both aeration rate and stirrer speed rather than temperature and pH could be used as manipulated variables for controlling the bioreactor. The ideally mixed assumption is relaxed where the mixing mechanism of the bioreactor is included in the proposed model.2. The main issue in modeling is the complexity of the microbial reactions and kinetics of the bioreactor performance for the non-ideally mixed behaviour of the bioreactor. Thus, it is important to identify the main reactions and kinetics which actually affect the bioreactor performance. In this study, Monod’s kinetics has been employed with the implementation of both aeration rate and stirrer speed. It is shown that the kinetics multi-scale model demonstrated good predictions of the mixing mechanism of bioreactor. Different conditions of aeration rate and stirrer speed influence the mixing mechanism and thus, contribute to the dynamics and kinetics within the bioreactor. These show that both aeration rate and stirrer speed play important role in studying the non-ideally mixed mechanism of the bioreactor.3. Optimization results, however, suggest that the kinetics hybrid model gives the most comparable values of maximum yield and productivity. Thus, this model is suggested for the determination of the optimum conditions of the bioreactor operation due to its simplicity in model construction, as compared to the kinetics multi-scale model.4. The control strategy of bioreactor using the data-based model does not always produce good performance, especially in the face of large disturbances. This implies that the use of models with ideally mixed assumptions would not always give good overall performance. Therefore, the controllability of the bioreactor performance is further improved with the implementation of the proposed non-ideally mixed bioreactor model. It is observed that both databased and kinetics hybrid models are able to keep the controlled variables in their set-point values by manipulating both aeration rate and stirrer speed for low disturbance changes.Hence, this research contributes on the understanding of mixing phenomena in micro-aerobic fermentation process from which a set of optimal operational conditions and control strategies to enhance its performance are developed.

The foraging strategies of cattle and goals were studied in different seasons in order to determine how animals respond to changes in the abundance of food resources in semi-arid rangelands in Zimbabwe. Three different approaches were used to test hypotheses concerning dietary shifts under different resource availability scenarios in the two species. In a field experiment, the foraging behaviour of cattle and goats responded to different cues in their environment: cattle were sensitive to changes in grass biomass while goats responded to browse. However, goats showed more flexibility in their response in changes in range condition by increasing the proportion of time spent on the more available resource. Similar results were found in an observational study of the foraging behaviour of goats and cattle in a communal area. Here the dry season strategy of goats consisted of increasing browsing and expanding their diet breath, while cattle depended more on stover in the fields as a forage supplement in the dry season.  key resources such as grass on contour bunds, riverine areas and fallow fields were also important, at the large scale. In both the field experiment and the communal area study; cattle and goats how low diet overlap indices, particularly for browse because cattle avoided species with thorns and selected broad-leaved species. In general, cattle had higher instantaneous intake rates on grass than browse, but matched intake rates on grass when they browsed on broad-leaved species. Goats were equally efficient on grass and browse, and had higher intake rates per metabolic body weight than cattle. Instantaneous intake rate under controlled conditions predicted that cattle would select broad-leaved browse species in preference to species with small leaves and thorns. This concurs with the results of the cattle in a field experiment and communal area study. The instantaneous intake rate of goats was only affected by a reduction in leaf density. Evaluation of range resources for sustainable animal production should take into account the animal species involved. Management interventions should be targeted at the dry season and key resource areas need to be protected so that they can be used strategically.

We study game theoretic ecological models with cyclic competition in the case where the strategies can be mixed or pure. For both projects, reported in [49] and [50], we employ Monte Carlo simulations to study finite systems. In chapter 3 the results of a previously published paper [49] are presented and expanded upon, where we study the extinction time of four cyclically competing species on different lattice structures using Lotka-Volterra dynamics. We find that the extinction time of a well mixed system goes linearly with respect to the system size and that the probability distribution approximately takes the shape of a shifted exponential. However, this is not true for when spatial structure is added to the model. In that case we find that instead the probability distribution takes on a non-trivial shape with two characteristic slopes and that the mean goes as a power law with an exponent greater than one. This is attributed to neutral species pairs, species who do not interact, forming domains and coarsening. In chapter 4 the results of [50] are reported and expanded, where we allow agents to choose cyclically competing strategies out of a distribution. We first study the case of three strategies and find through both simulation and mean field equations that the probability distributions of the agents synchronize and oscillate with time in the limit where the agents probability distributions can be approximated as continuous. However, when we simulate the system on a one-dimensional lattice and the probability distributions are small and discretized, it is found that there is a drastic transition in stability, where the average extinction time of a strategy goes from being a power law with respect to system size to an exponential. This transition can also be observed in space time images with the emergence of tile patterns. We also look into the case of four cyclically competing strategies and find results similar to that of [49], such as the coarsening of neutral domains. However, the transition from power law to exponential for the average extinction time seen for three strategies is not observed, but we do find a transition from one power law to another with a different slope. This paper investigates innovations of the early modern European textile industry and practices of cultural transfer using seventeenth-century Venetian Crete as a case study. It explores the use of novelties, such as mixed cloths, in the dowries assigned to brides in the urban setting of Candia (modern Heraklion) and the surrounding countryside during the period 1600-1645. It draws on computer-processed data from marriage agreements and inventories of movables from the State Archives of Venice. It illustrates, through a comparative lens, how brides used (silk) mixed fabrics to differentiate themselves from others and how Venetian Crete followed the changes in production techniques of the European textile industry.

We study the semantics of knowledge in strategic reasoning. Most existing works either implicitly assume that agents do not know one another’s strategies, or that all strategies are known to all; and some works present inconsistent mixes of both features. We put forward a novel semantics for Strategy Logic with Knowledge that cleanly models whose strategies each agent knows. We study how adopting this semantics impacts agents’ knowledge and strategic ability, as well as the complexity of the model-checking problem.

The Stackelberg security game is played between a defender and an attacker, where the defender needs to allocate a limited amount of resources to multiple targets in order to minimize the loss due to adversarial attack by the attacker. While allowing targets to have different values, classic settings often assume uniform requirements to defend the targets. This enables existing results that study mixed strategies (randomized allocation algorithms) to adopt a compact representation of the mixed strategies. In this work, we initiate the study of mixed strategies for the security games in which the targets can have different defending requirements. In contrast to the case of uniform defending requirement, for which an optimal mixed strategy can be computed efficiently, we show that computing the optimal mixed strategy is NP-hard for the general defending requirements setting. However, we show that strong upper and lower bounds for the optimal mixed strategy defending result can be derived. We propose an efficient close-to-optimal Patching algorithm that computes mixed strategies that use only few pure strategies. We also study the setting when the game is played on a network and resource sharing is enabled between neighboring targets. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in several large real-world datasets.

We consider the problem of allocating scarce security resources among heterogeneous targets to thwart a possible attack. It is well known that deterministic solutions to this problem being highly predictable are severely suboptimal. To mitigate this predictability, the game-theoretic security game model was proposed which randomizes over pure (deterministic) strategies, causing confusion in the adversary. Unfortunately, such mixed strategies typically involve randomizing over a large number of strategies, requiring security personnel to be familiar with numerous protocols, making them hard to operationalize. Motivated by these practical considerations, we propose an easy to use approach for computing strategies that are easy to operationalize and that bridge the gap between the static solution and the optimal mixed strategy. These strategies only randomize over an optimally chosen subset of pure strategies whose cardinality is selected by the defender, enabling them to conveniently tune the trade-off between ease of operationalization and efficiency using a single design parameter. We show that the problem of computing such operationalizable strategies is NP-hard, formulate it as a mixed-integer optimization problem, provide an algorithm for computing epsilon-optimal equilibria, and an efficient heuristic. We evaluate the performance of our approach on the problem of screening for threats at airport checkpoints and show that the Price of Usability, i.e., the loss in optimality to obtain a strategy that is easier to operationalize, is typically not high.

Popular crowdsourcing techniques mostly focus on evaluating workers' labeling quality before adjusting their weights during label aggregation. Recently, another cohort of models regard crowdsourced annotations as incomplete tensors and recover unfilled labels by tensor completion. However, mixed strategies of the two methodologies have never been comprehensively investigated, leaving them as rather independent approaches. In this work, we propose MiSC ( Mixed Strategies Crowdsourcing), a versatile framework integrating arbitrary conventional crowdsourcing and tensor completion techniques. In particular, we propose a novel iterative Tucker label aggregation algorithm that outperforms state-of-the-art methods in extensive experiments.

Due to the recent cyber attacks, cybersecurity is becoming more critical in modern society. A single attack (e.g., WannaCry ransomware attack) can cause as much as $4 billion in damage. However, the cybersecurity investment by companies is far from satisfactory. Therefore, governments (e.g., in the UK) launch grants and subsidies to help companies to boost their cybersecurity to create a safer national cyber environment. The allocation problem is hard due to limited subsidies and the interdependence between self-interested companies and the presence of a strategic cyber attacker. To tackle the government's allocation problem, we introduce a Stackelberg game-theoretic model where the government first commits to an allocation and the companies/users and attacker simultaneously determine their protection and attack (pure or mixed) strategies, respectively. For the pure-strategy case, while there may not be a feasible allocation in general, we prove that computing an optimal allocation is NP-hard and propose a linear reverse convex program when the attacker can attack all users. For the mixed-strategy case, we show that there is a polynomial time algorithm to find an optimal allocation when the attacker has a single-attack capability. We then provide a heuristic algorithm, based on best-response-gradient dynamics, to find an effective allocation in the general setting. Experimentally, we show that our heuristic is effective and outperforms other baselines on synthetic and real data.

To establish metamodels for the multi-material structure design problems, the material selection of each component is considered as a categorical design variable. One challenging task is to establish an accurate mixed-variable metamodel. It is critical to reduce the prediction error of the mixed-variable metamodel in order to achieve a feasible design with superior performance in the metamodel-based optimization. This paper investigates two different strategies of mixed-variable metamodeling: “feature separating” strategy and “all-in-one” strategy. A supervised learning-aided method is proposed to improve the “feature separating” metamodels. The proposed method is compared with several existing mixed-variable metamodeling methods on three engineering benchmark problems to understand their relative merits. These methods include Neural Network (NN) regression, Classification and Regression Tree (CART) and Gaussian Process (GP). A new Polynomial Coefficient Metric is developed to quantify the adequacy of training data. This study provides insight and guidance for establishing proper metamodels on multi-material structural design problems.

Ventilation is part of the acceptable indoor air quality and thermal comfort problem. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic gas that’s emitted from cars in vehicular spaces. A new strategy of ventilation called periodic supply exhaust strategy is used. The main advantage of PRESEV strategy is reducing air flow rate requirement and also achieve averaged CO ppm rise according to standards. With the PRESEV strategy a ventilation flow rate 27% of that required by conventional piston or mixed ventilation strategies could achieve the same maximum hourly averaged local CO ppm rise. This paper aims at applying the PRESEV strategy throughout different cases and check effectiveness on these cases.

Single strategies to improve health literacy (e.g. alternative presentations of numerical data) might improve health service utilisation and health outcomes by improving health literacy. Other mixed strategies, such as self-management, disease management, and adherence interventions, might improve healthcare utilization and health outcomes in people with low health literacy by facilitating patient/provider communication, circumventing barriers to healthcare, or improving health-related skills.

This rapid literature review summarises evidence and key lessons that exist regarding previous refugee and mixed migration displacement from Afghanistan to surrounding countries. The review identified a diverse literature that explored past refugee and mixed migration, with a range of quantitative and qualitative studies identified. A complex and fluid picture is presented with waves of mixed migration (both outflow and inflow) associated with key events including the: Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989); Afghan Civil War (1992–96); Taliban Rule (1996–2001); War in Afghanistan (2001–2021). A contextual picture emerges of Afghans having a long history of using mobility as a survival strategy or as social, economic and political insurance for improving livelihoods or to escape conflict and natural disasters. Whilst violence has been a principal driver of population movements among Afghans, it is not the only cause. Migration has also been associated with natural disasters (primarily drought) which is considered a particular issue across much of the country – this is associated primarily with internal displacement. Further to this, COVID-19 is impacting upon and prompting migration to and from Afghanistan. Data on refugee and mixed migration movement is diverse and at times contradictory given the fluidity and the blurring of boundaries between types of movements. Various estimates exist for numbers of Afghanistan refugees globally. It is also important to note that migratory flows are often fluid involving settlement in neighbouring countries, return to Afghanistan. In many countries, Afghani migrants and refugees face uncertain political situations and have, in recent years, been ‘coerced’ into returning to Afghanistan with much discussion of a ‘return bias’ being evident in official policies. The literature identified in this report (a mix of academic, humanitarian agency and NGO) is predominantly focused on Pakistan and Iran with a less established evidence base on the scale of Afghan refugee and migrant communities in other countries in the region. . Whilst conflict has been a primary driver of displacement, it has intersected with drought conditions and poor adherence to COVID-19 mitigation protocols. Past efforts to address displacement internationally have affirmed return as the primary objective in relation to durable solutions; practically, efforts promoted improved programming interventions towards creating conditions for sustainable return and achieving improved reintegration prospects for those already returned to Afghanistan.

Attention to mixed methods studies research has increased in recent years, particularly among funding agencies that increasingly require a mixed methods approach for program evaluation. At the same time, researchers operating within large-scale, rapid-turnaround research projects are faced with the reality that collection and analysis of large amounts of qualitative data typically require an intense amount of project resources and time. However, practical examples of efficiently collecting and handling high-quality qualitative data within these studies are limited. More examples are also needed of procedures for integrating the qualitative and quantitative strands of a study from design to interpretation in ways that can facilitate efficiencies. This paper provides a detailed description of the strategies used to collect and analyze qualitative data in what the research team believed to be an efficient, high-quality way within a team-based mixed methods evaluation study of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) high-school education. The research team employed an iterative approach to qualitative data analysis that combined matrix analyses with Microsoft Excel and the qualitative data analysis software program ATLAS.ti. This approach yielded a number of practical benefits. Selected preliminary results illustrate how this approach can simplify analysis and facilitate data integration.
