In this paper, we propose transmission strategies in multiple-input-single-output (MISO) cooperative communications with two relay nodes in cases when the relay nodes have different trust degrees, where the trust degrees represent how much the relay nodes can be trusted for cooperation. For the given trust degrees and channel conditions, we first derive a relay selection strategy that maximizes the expected achievable rate. We then propose a cooperative transmission strategy of relays with an optimal cooperative beamforming vector that maximizes the expected achievable rate, which is a linear combination of weighted channel vectors. Finally, we derive the optimal transmission strategy, which is a mixed strategy between the relay selection and cooperative transmission strategies with respect to the trust degrees. Our analysis and numerical results show that the proposed transmission strategies increase the expected achievable rate by exploiting the trust degrees of the relay nodes, along with the channel conditions.

Penetration of the power grid by renewable energy sources, distributed storage, and distributed generators is becoming increasingly common. Increased utilization of these distributed energy resources (DERs) has given rise to additional protection coordination concerns, particularly where they are utilized in an unbalanced manner or where loading among phases is unbalanced. Digital relays such as the SEL-751 (produced by Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Pullman, WA, USA) series have the capability of being set on a per-phase basis. This capability is underutilized in common practice. Additionally, in optimization algorithms for determining relay settings, the time-overcurrent characteristics (TOCs) of relays are generally not treated as variables and are assigned before running the optimization algorithm. In this paper, TOC options themselves are treated as discrete variables to be considered in the optimization algorithm. A mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) is set up where the goal is to minimize relay operating times. A genetic algorithm (GA) approach is implemented in MATLAB where two cases are considered. In the first case, the TOC and Time dial setting (TDS) of each relay is set on a three-phase basis. In the second case, per-phase settings are considered. Relay TDSs and TOCs are both considered as simultaneous discrete control variables. Despite the stochastic nature of using per-phase settings for unbalanced systems is found to generally allow for shorter operating times. However, for relatively balanced systems, it is best to use three-phase settings if computation time is of importance.

Cooperative communication with RF energy harvesting relays has emerged as a promising technique to improve the reliability, coverage, longevity and capacity of future IoT networks. An efficient relay assignment with proper power allocation and splitting is required to satisfy the network’s QoS requirements. This work considers the resource management problem in decode and forward relay based cooperative IoT network. A realistic mathematical model is proposed for joint user admission, relay assignment, power allocation and splitting ratio selection problem. The optimization problem is a mixed integer non-linear problem (MINLP) whose objective is to maximize the overall sum rate (bps) while satisfying the practical network constraints. Further, an outer approximation algorithm is adopted which provides epsilon-optimal solution to the problem with guaranteed convergence and reasonable complexity. Simulations of the proposed solution are carried out for various network scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that cooperative communication with diversity achieves a better admission of IoT users and increases not only their individual data rates but also the overall sum rate of an IoT network.

The relay optimization expresses quite a challenge for smooth and optimal operation of power system networks. The relay optimization is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear problem and is highly constrained. Furthermore, a reliable relaying system must be able to detect and isolate the faulted portion in a timely manner. Therefore, it is necessary to find optimal parameters for relay settings to be able to respond in a timely way to the encountered fault and at the same time keep in consideration the operational and coordination constraints. This paper proposes modified Harris hawk optimization (MHHO), which is based on the intelligent preying tactics of Harris hawks and the improvement of intended modifications, crowding distance and roulette wheel selection. The proposed algorithm has been tested on IEEE 8 and 15-bus systems, using MATLAB programming. The test systems are the distribution networks covering the medium level voltage for consideration. The simulation results verified the success of MHHO to find optimal settings for the relays. For IEEE 8-bus system, MHHO was able to give 35.45% improvement in the results in comparison to other algorithms. Furthermore, for the IEEE 15-bus system, MHHO showed 24.09% improvement on average. The comparison of the results obtained by MHHO with the other state-of-the-art algorithms proved that it is the strong candidate for optimization of the relay coordination problem.

With the rapid development and evolvement of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, UAV aided wireless communication technology has been widely studied recently. In this paper, a buffer aided multi-UAV relaying network is investigated to assist blocked ground communication. According to the mobility and implementation flexibility of UAV relays, it is assumed that the communication link between air-to-ground is the Rician fading channel. On the basis of information causality, we derive the state change of the information in the buffer of UAV relays and maximize the end-to-end average throughput by join the relay selection, UAV transmit power, and UAV trajectory optimization. However, the considered problem is a mixed integer non-convex optimization problem, and therefore, it is difficult to solve directly with general optimization methods. In order to make the problem tractable, an efficient iterative algorithm based on the block coordinate descent and the successive convex optimization techniques is proposed. The convergence of the proposed algorithm will be verified analytically at the end of this paper. The simulation results show that by alternately optimizing the relay selection, UAV transmit power, and UAV trajectory, the proposed algorithm is able to achieve convergence quickly and significantly improve the average throughput, as compared to other benchmark schemes.

In cooperative cognitive radio networks (CCRNs), there has been growing demand of transmitting secondary user (SU) source information secretly to the corresponding SU destination with the aid of cooperative SU relays. Efficient power allocation (PA) among SU relays and multi-relay selection (MRS) are a critical problem for operating such networks whereas the interference to the primary user receiver is being kept below a tolerable level and the transmission power requirements of the secondary users are being satisfied. Subsequently, in the paper, we develop the problem to solve the optimal solution for PA and MRS in a collaborative amplify-and-forward-based CCRNs, in terms of maximizing the secrecy rate (SR) of the networks. It is found that the problem is a mixed integer programming problem and difficult to be solved. To cope with this difficulty, we propose a meta-heuristic genetic algorithm-based MRS and PA scheme to maximize the SR of the networks while satisfying transmission power and the interference requirements of the networks. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme achieves near-optimal SR performance, compared to the exhaustive search scheme, and provides a significant SR improvement when compared with some conventional relay selection schemes with equal power allocation.

The present study investigated swimmers’ performances on the starting and turning segments between individual and relay races. A total number of 72 race performances of the same swimmers in both relay 4 × 100 m finals (freestyle, medley, and mixed freestyle) and individual 100 m finals or semi-finals (butterfly, breaststroke, and freestyle) from the LEN European Swimming Championships were compared with repeated measures MANOVA. Swimmers performed 5–7% faster starts in the relay than in the corresponding individual events, despite no differences in the flight phase and a lower performance (shorter distances and slower velocities) on the underwater start section. The 15 m turn times were slower in the butterfly relay races although no specific differences in the underwater parameters were observed. These results suggest that specific training of the starting and turning segments should be performed under relay conditions to optimise pacing and performance in the underwater sections.

This paper proposes a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) energy-harvesting relay jamming based mixed RF/FSO system, and studies its security performance optimization in the presence of an eavesdropper. In this work, the RF and FSO channels experience Nakagami-m fading distribution and Málaga(M) turbulence, respectively. A two-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relay is presented in the system, and the effect of pointing errors is considered. The presence of a nearby single antenna eavesdropper that attempts to eavesdrop on the transmission is also modeled. In order to prevent eavesdropping, the relay introduces the SWIPT structure to control information delivery and wireless energy recharging. The closed expressions of secrecy outage probability (SOP) and average secrecy capacity (ASC) of the mixed RF/FSO system are derived for the above system model. In addition, the closed-form expression of the asymptotic results for SOP and ASC are derived when signal-to-noise ratios at relay and legitimate destinations tend to infinity. The correctness of these expressions is verified using the Monte Carlo method. The influence of various key factors on the safety performance of the system is analyzed by simulations. The results show that the safety performance of the system is considerably improved under good weather conditions as well as by increasing the signal-interference noise ratio, number of interferer antennas, power distribution factor and energy conversion efficiency. This study provides a new system structure and a good theoretical basis for evaluating the physical layer security performance of the mixed RF/FSO system.

In this paper, we consider a relay system which consists of an optical link followed by a radio frequency (RF) link. The optical link consists of a light-emitting diode (LED) array as a transmitter and a digital camera as a receiver. The relay uses the detect-and-forward strategy. The received pixel values in the optical link are processed using equal gain combining (EGC), best pixel selection (BPS), and maximal ratio combining (MRC). The system’s bit error rate performance is evaluated for different values of received optical power as well as for different values of camera-to-optical source distances. It is found that for a small camera-to-optical source distance EGC outperforms BPS, while BPS outperforms EGC at higher distances.

Ce travail de thèse se concentre sur l'analyse des facteurs interindividuels de la performance et de leurs liens avec les facteurs environnementaux dans la discipline du triathlon, en particulier sur les formats de triathlon présents aux Jeux Olympiques. Les performances dans les courses de triathlon, où les triathlètes interagissent les uns avec les autres, comme c'est le cas sur les parcours de triathlon de courte distance (super-sprint, sprint et standard), dépendent de l'utilisation optimale des capacités individuelles ainsi que de l'adaptation de l'effort à la dynamique de la course. La discipline du triathlon courte distance a évolué sur le plan réglementaire et technologique au cours des vingt dernières années. Par conséquent, l'objectif de cette recherche était de comprendre les dynamiques de course sur ces formats courts en fonction des profils de triathlètes présents, et de quantifier les niveaux de performance de chacun en tenant compte de la concurrence, qui est le paramètre le plus similaire entre chaque course. Les premières études (1 et 2) se sont penchées sur le format novateur du relais mixte, qui a été introduit aux Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo 2020. Ce format ultra-court propose une dynamique de course axée sur la préservation de la position et implique une proximité élevée entre les athlètes. Nous avons ainsi observé les stratégies mises en place par les équipes et identifié les profils de triathlètes correspondant à chaque relais. Dans un second temps, nos recherches se sont orientées vers le format standard (études 3 et 4), également présent aux Jeux Olympiques et obligatoirement concouru par les athlètes du relais. Dans ces études, nous avons cherché à estimer le niveau de chaque athlète en utilisant un système d'échange de points en fonction des probabilités de victoire et de défaite entre chaque paire d'athlètes. Ce système nous a permis d'évaluer la densité de la concurrence lors d'une course et la performance cible d'un athlète. De plus, en le reliant à la typologie des parcours, nous avons pu observer les dynamiques de groupe en course et estimer la probabilité de réussite d'une échappée à l'issue de la natation et de la partie cycliste
This thesis work revolves around the analysis of inter-individual factors affecting performance and their connection with environmental factors within the context of triathlon, particularly focusing on the triathlon formats featured in the Olympic Games. Performances in triathlon races, where triathletes interact with each other, as seen in the short-distance triathlon formats (super-sprint, sprint, and standard), depend on the optimal utilization of individual capacities and the adaptation of effort to the race dynamics. The discipline of short-distance triathlon has evolved both in terms of regulations and technology over the past two decades. Therefore, the research objective was to understand race dynamics in these short formats based on the profiles of the participating triathletes and to quantify the performance levels of each athlete while taking into account the competition, which is the most consistent parameter across different races. The initial studies (1 and 2) focused on the innovative format of mixed relays introduced in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This ultra-short format involves race dynamics centered around maintaining position and high proximity among athletes. We observed the strategies adopted by teams and identified the profiles of triathletes corresponding to each relay.Subsequently, our research shifted towards the standard format (studies 3 and 4), also featured in the Olympics and compulsory for relay athletes. In these studies, we aimed to estimate the level of each athlete using points exchange system based on the probabilities of victory and defeat between each pair of athletes. This system allowed us to assess the density of competition in a race and the target performance of an athlete. Furthermore, by connecting it to course typology, we were able to observe race group dynamics and estimate the probability of a successful breakaway after the swimming and cycling segments

The production of sugar, ethanol and electricity from sugar cane necessarily involves harvesting and transportation of raw materials, which are expensive and complex operations and have significant influence on the quality of the industrial raw material. The literature reports several optimization approaches related to the planning of planting, harvesting and transporting of sugarcane, however the scheduling of harvesting fronts is underexplored. This thesis intends to contribute to the state-of-art of this important issue in the context of the Brazilian agribusiness. Optimization approaches to support scheduling decisions of harvesting fronts considering the balance of harvesting and transportation capacities, as well as good agronomic management are proposed. The approaches are inspired by the representation of the problem as a lot sizing and scheduling model with parallel machines and sequence-dependent setup costs and times, a modelling technique well studied in the production planning and control literature. Three variants of this formulation, based on mathematical programming models, were developed and tested in two real case studies of medium size sugar mills. Heuristic methods based on aggregation procedures and mathematical programming have also been studied and developed to solve large scaled problems found in practice. Among the three variants studied, one presented the best solution quality within the expected execution time. Important scenario analysis were done indicating that the schedule s fulfilment provides reduction of harvesting and transporting complexity to the following season, which can generate significant saves in the cases studied. Besides that, comparing the proposed scheduling method with one of the sector s practice, it can be generated also significant cost reduction in the cases studied. The results were analyzed according to a validation methodology (descriptive facet of tetraedrum) well known in the literature.
A produção de açúcar, álcool e energia elétrica a partir de cana-de-açúcar passa necessariamente pela colheita e transporte da matéria-prima, que são operações custosas, complexas e que interferem significativamente na qualidade da matéria-prima industrial. A literatura reporta várias abordagens de otimização relacionadas ao planejamento do plantio, da colheita e do transporte de cana-de-açúcar, todavia a programação das frentes de colheita é pouco explorada. Nesta tese pretende-se contribuir para o estado da arte deste importante tema no contexto do agronegócio brasileiro. Propõe-se abordagens de otimização para apoiar decisões de programação das frentes de colheita, considerando-se o equilíbrio das capacidades de colheita e transporte, bem como um bom manejo agronômico. As abordagens são inspiradas na representação do problema por meio de um modelo de dimensionamento de lotes e sequenciamento da produção em máquinas paralelas com custos e tempos de setup dependentes da sequência, bem estudado na literatura em contextos de planejamento e controle da produção. Para isso foram desenvolvidas três variantes desta formulação baseadas em programação matemática, voltadas para a programação das frentes de colheita, que foram testadas em dois estudos de caso reais de usinas de cana-de-açúcar de médio porte do setor. Métodos heurísticos baseados em procedimentos de agregação e programação matemática também foram estudados e desenvolvidos para a resolução dos problemas de grande porte encontrados na prática. Das três variantes estudadas, uma delas apresentou melhor qualidade da solução dentro de tempos computacionais aceitáveis para o problema. Análises de cenário importantes foram feitas indicando que o cumprimento da programação proporciona redução de complexidade da colheita e transporte na safra seguinte, podendo gerar economias significativas nos casos estudados. Além disso, a comparação dos resultados das abordagens aqui exploradas com o que é praticado no setor indica um potencial de redução de custos também significativo para os casos estudados. Os resultados foram analisados de acordo com uma metodologia de validação (faceta descritiva do tetraedro) conhecida na literatura.

Desde a década de 90 que a reduzida retenção dos condutores de longo curso se assume como uma preocupação das empresas que lidam com transporte rodoviário de carga completa. As longas jornadas de trabalho dos condutores, pernoitando dias consecutivos “em estrada”, constituem o principal catalisador para o elevado turnover. Face ao problema exposto, uma abordagem disruptiva tem emergido na academia, introduzindo o conceito de relay points: pontos na rede onde os condutores trocam os reboques entre si. A “partilha” da mercadoria entre condutores evita percorrerem longas distâncias, possibilitando regressos frequentes ao domicílio e, subjacentemente, uma maior qualidade de vida. O presente estudo visa propor um modelo de apoio a decisões estratégicas para a implementação de redes baseadas em relay points, descrevendo algoritmos para a localização destes pontos e critérios para a expedição das mercadorias. Aplicou-se o modelo desenvolvido a um caso real, permitindo comparar a sua viabilidade com o atual sistema de operação do transportador. Os resultados obtidos permitem evidenciar importantes benefícios para os stakeholders envolvidos. No cenário mais favorável, poderão ser evitadas anualmente mais de 14.500 dormidas “em estrada”, sendo que 74% da mercadoria será expedida através de relay points, e geradas, nesta via, poupanças anuais na ordem dos 175.000€ para a empresa. Neste sentido, o modelo desenvolvido atua ao nível da sustentabilidade social (ótica dos condutores) e permite reduzir custos de operação às empresas, sem comprometer, porém, os prazos de entrega com o cliente. Assim, os stakeholders envolvidos beneficiam com a implementação de redes baseadas em relay points
Since the 90’s, the low retention of long haul drivers is a concern to the companies that deal with truckload road transport. The long working hours of truck drivers and sleeping consecutive days “on the road” are the main catalyst for high turnover. In view of the above, a disruptive approach has emerged, introducing the concept of relay points: points on the network where drivers swap trailers together. The “sharing” of freights between drivers avoids travelling long distances, enabling the drivers to frequently return home and consequently provides a higher quality of life. This study aims to propose a model to support strategic decisions for the implementation of network-based relay points, describing algorithms for the location of these points and criteria for the dispatching of freights. The model was applied to a real situation, allowing a comparison of its feasibility on the current carrier’s operation system. The results obtained show important benefits for the stakeholders involved. In the most favorable scenario it is possible to avoid, each year, more than 14,500 overnight stays “on the road”, and 74% of the carrier’s freights will be dispatched through relay points, and this will generate € 175,000 of annual savings to the carrier. Therefore, the developed model operates at the level of social sustainability (drivers’ perspective) and reduces operating costs for businesses, without compromising, however, the delivery time to the customer. As an object of science, well-being is unusual in that its study relies on a normative standard. Even when the requisite theory justifying this standard is available, deep disagreements about values can surface. These disagreements seem to undermine the claim of this science to objectivity. This is one reason why philosophers of science have traditionally advocated value freedom. This chapter proposes the notion of a ‘mixed claim’ to denote scientific hypotheses that rely on both factual and normative categories. It argues against the advocates of value freedom, that mixed claims should not be eliminated from science. Rather, we need principles that when followed can secure procedural objectivity for mixed claims. These principles include making values explicit, testing for presence of disagreement, and subjecting the controversial value presuppositions to a public deliberation that includes experts on well-being as well as the public whose well-being is in question.

This book examines the racialization of Blasians – mixed race people with Black and Asian ancestry – that neither sees them as new or unique, nor as a racial salve to move the United States past the problem of the colour line. The emergence of Blasian celebrities and the analyses of these stars acknowledges that to understand what and who is a Blasian means to first understand hegemonic notions of both Blacks and Asian/Americans. Contextualized against those dominant discourses Blasians explode the narrow boundaries of authenticity around racialized categories. Multiracial people are just as capable as monoracial people of upholding hierarchies of identity, as well as dismantling those hierarchies. Thus, in this book Blasians do not escape race, or erase race, but they do deconstruct normative instantiations of identity. The presence, mobility, and utility of these multiracial celebrities within both U.S. and global racial schemas simultaneously realize and complicate potential alternatives to racial and racist paradigms. These mixed race stars draw attention to how risible and absurd the biological and cultural premises for racialization truly are, and demonstrate potential alternatives for affiliation that do not rely on genetic material.

Building on new insights from organizational economics, management accounting researchers have highlighted how incentive contracts and performance measure choices complement structural arrangements in firms. We discuss how “slow-moving” elements in organizational design, such as the allocation of decision rights to local managers and interdependencies between different parts of the production function, affect the working of incentives and performance measures. We pay attention to the empirical challenges that researchers face in this area and argues that mixed-method approaches in which economic models are combined with empirical evidence can help to build a body of evidence that is robust and admits cross-study accumulation of knowledge. Finally, we illustrate how recent economic models that incorporate other-regarding preferences can help to bridge the gap between economics-based research in management accounting and more traditional approaches that rely on the behavioral sciences.

AbstractIf you have always assumed that any hadith cited from one of the recognised Sahih or other collections must: (a) be attributable to the Prophet; (b) have both a solid (unbroken) and sound (reliable) chain of transmitters; and (c) relay a verified saying or event, then you would have been wrong.Moreover the scholars of the hadith compilations had a juristic bent, meaning that they were looking to derive laws in order to regulate society. They did not shy away from openly using weak hadith to justify establishing a certain law if in their own minds they were doing so for the greater good. This had its most negative and lasting impact in matters relating to women. There was also the challenge of myths, forgeries and mixed intentions to contend with in compiling hadiths. Overall, only a few dozen Prophetic hadiths are said to be reliable with absolute certainty, though many others can be said to be “most probably” reliable.Thus we must undertake a re-prioritisation of the Qur’an above all other sources so that hadith is assessed through the lens of the Qur’an rather than the other way round, as has astonishingly been the case.

This paper discusses the benefits of a mixed-methods approach designed for the investigation of language attitudes towards accent variation in Indian English. The study was carried out in a transient community of Indian university students in Heidelberg, Germany in 2018. Methods from language attitude research were combined with those from perceptual dialectology with the aim of eliciting both overt and covert attitudes. The paper critically assesses the current methods used in language attitude research in New Englishes, which often neglect the mapping of perceptual landscapes and mostly rely on Verbal Guise Tests and direct questions. The results show that a mixed-methods approach helps to depict the perceptual heterogeneity of language users in New Englishes contexts.

AbstractVulnerable populations are often hard to reach. Ethnic or sexual minorities, people living at the margins of social, economic, educational or occupational systems and structures are frequently experiencing precariousness, dealing with unsure material and symbolic resources. However, those populations are most of the time concealed and unseen in big statistical surveys, precisely as they stand at the edges of main social groups. Therefore, it seems very worthwhile to develop specific tool to conduct surveys on those most vulnerable populations, and mixed methods approaches are particularly relevant for that purpose. In this chapter, we will mainly rely on the Musicians LIVES survey conducted between 2012 and 2016 on “ordinary musicians” (nor rich or famous) in French-speaking Switzerland. From the sampling method to the data collection, we crossed quantitative and qualitative approaches in order to get significant and accurate results on a very informal occupational space. The chapter will be enhanced by different example and cases from other surveys conducted within the NCCR LIVES over the last decade.

AbstractConnected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can exploit information received from other vehicles in addition to their sensor information to make decisions. For this reason, their deployment is expected to improve traffic safety and efficiency. Safe lane-changing is a significant challenge for CAVs, particularly in mixed traffic, i.e. with human-driven vehicles (HDVs) on the road, as the set of vehicles around them varies very quickly, and they can only communicate with a fraction of them. Many approaches have been proposed, with most recent work adopting a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) approach, but those do not provide safety guarantees making them unsuitable for such a safety-critical application. A number of external safety techniques for reinforcement learning have been proposed, such as shielding, control barrier functions, model predictive control and recovery RL, but those have not been applied to CAV lane changing.This paper investigates whether external safety supervisors could be used to provide safety guarantees for MARL-based CAV lane changing (LC-CAV). For this purpose, a MARL approach to CAV lane changing (MARL-CAV) is designed, using parameter sharing and a replay buffer to motivate cooperative behaviour and collaboration among CAVs. This is then used as a baseline to discuss the applicability of the state-of-the-art external safety techniques for reinforcement learning to MARL-CAV. Comprehensive analysis shows that integrating an external safety technique to MARL for lane changing in CAVs is challenging, and none of the existing external safety techniques can be directly applied to MARL-CAV as these safety techniques require prior knowledge of unsafe states and recovery policies.

Transportation has an enormous impact on the U.S. economy and on the lives of all Americans. Many modes of transportation rely on pavement, but pavement conditions deteriorate over time because of the combined effects of traffic and climate. Exposure to moisture often causes premature failure of asphalt pavements as it reduces the stiffness of the asphalt and enables stripping of the asphalt from the aggregate. This research evaluates the effectiveness of clay nanomaterials (i.e., nanoclays) in improving the resistance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) to moisture damage and compares the enhancement results to anti-stripping additives commonly used in pavement construction. Two types of surface-modified nanoclay, lime-treated aggregate, and two amine-based liquid antistripping agents (HP Plus and LOF 6500) were evaluated for improving HMA’s moisture resistance. All additives tested for reducing moisture damage resulted in dry and wet tensile strength of the modified mixes higher than the minimum specified by Caltrans 2018 Standard Specifications (100 psi for dry tensile strength and 70 psi for wet tensile strength). The Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) of all HMA modified mixes was higher than 0.80, which is the minimum specified by the Superpave mix design method (Asphalt Mix Design Methods MS-2, Asphalt Institute) and exceeded the TSR of the control mix. The TSR for HMA mixes modified using nanoclays were comparable to those for HMA mixes modified using liquid antistripping and lime slurry treated aggregate. Liquid antistripping agents tested herein were the least costly additive at an approximately $2.0/ton added cost. This research can be used to better understand pavement deterioration to enable the most efficient and cost-effective construction and preservation of our nation's critical transportation infrastructure.

Prior attempts to develop a generic Parametric Emissions Monitoring methodology for combustion turbines, particularly low emissions units, have failed due either to the reduction of a complex problem to too few degrees of freedom or the brute force reliance on regression analysis. Field test data collected by the research team clearly illustrated that a successful PEMS model will need to incorporate multiple zones to account for pilot fuel versus pre-mixed combustion, and changes in air/fuel ratio at the flame front. The information reported herein shows that, ideally, the PEMS model should rely on speed, fuel flow, compressor discharge pressure and temperature, and ambient conditions as the inputs. The model can utilize (combustion turbine) turbine discharge temperatures as cross checks and/or for tuning. Make and model specific geometric characteristics should include compressor air flow versus speed, air splits between the combustor and the cooling air, and the fuel splits between diffusion and premixed. Finally, the model should be able to accommodate fuel that varies in composition based on provided gas speciation.

Childhood asthma is a significant public health problem in the United States. Barriers to effective asthma management in children include the need for caregivers to identify and manage diverse environmental triggers and promote appropriate use of preventive asthma medications. Although health care providers may introduce asthma treatments and care plans, many providers lack the time and capacity to educate caregivers about asthma in an ongoing, sustained manner. To help address these complexities of asthma care, many providers and caregivers rely on patient navigators (defined as persons who provide patients with a particular set of services and who address barriers to care) (Dohan & Schrag, 2005). Despite growing interest in their value for chronic disease management, researchers and providers know little about how or what benefits patient navigators can provide to caregivers in managing asthma in children. To explore this issue, we conducted a mixed-method evaluation involving focus groups and a survey with caregivers of children with moderate-to-severe asthma who were enrolled in the Merck Childhood Asthma Network Initiative (MCAN). Findings suggest that patient navigators may support children’s asthma management by providing individualized treatment plans and hands-on practice, improving caregivers’ understanding of environmental triggers and their mitigation, and giving clear, accessible instructions for proper medication management. Study results may help to clarify and further develop the role of patient navigators for the effective management of asthma in children.

Pseudociencia y sociedad en España. Estado de la cuestión e investigaciones recientes analyses the communicative strategies that pseudoscience uses for its social ex-pansion. This work begins with the definition of an epistemological framework that allows us to understand the phenomenon of pseudoscience and its rela-tionship with the main factors of contemporary society, such as relativism and liquidity. As a consequence of the postmodern condition, absolute certainties vanish and the possibility of not only ignoring science but even denying it be-comes real. In this sense, one of the main theses of this work is that the over-informed, postmodern and liquid society favours the expansion of pseudo-scientific discourses. Spain, like most countries, is no stranger to this expan-sion. To confirm this hypothesis, different social groups have been analysed to a) identify the degree of insertion of pseudoscience in these contexts; b) describe and categorise the communicative elements present in pseudoscien-tific discourses; and c) propose lines of action to limit the rise of these dis-courses. The present research has covered science journalists, literature, libraries, universities and different representatives of the biomedical field, such as pharmacists and healthcare professionals. Mixed methodologies have been applied: in-depth interviews to identify discursive patterns, content analysis, data analysis, and focus groups. Among the main conclusions, the followings stand out: 1) Pseudoscience uses fallacy, relativism, emotional reinforcement, opposition to a supposed dogmatic concept of science, antiquity, holistic or naturalistic arguments, among others to expand. 2) Pseudoscience normalizes its social discourse through its appearance in different contexts, in some cases openly, and in others in a discourse of risk minimization that favours its nor-malization as something innocuous. As a whole, the pseudoscientific discourse represents a challenge for scientific communication that must be addressed using all the communicative tools available.
