In this article, I “read against the grain” of a monument to post-WWII immigration and migrant communities. I am concerned with how such monuments, locally situated, might be used in more progressive and transformative histories, ones that harbor the potential to challenge existing public and collective memories of postwar migration and multiculturalism that occur on a national stage and within the ambit of Australia’s heritage industry. This is a study in how discursively marginalized migrant groups, with subaltern narratives about mobility and settlement, claim space for alternative histories in the context of a restrictive official heritage.

This essay examines two monuments: the Voortrekker Monument in South Africa and the American This is the Place Monument in Utah. Similar in terms of construction and historical purpose, both employ gender as an important tool to legitimize the settler society each commemorates. Each was part of a similar project of cultural recuperation in the 1930s−1940s that chose as their object of commemoration the overland migration in covered wagons of a group of white settlers that felt oppressed by other white settlers, and therefore sought a new homeland. In a precarious cultural moment, descendants of these two white settler societies—the Dutch Voortrekkers of South Africa and Euro-American Mormons (Latter-day Saints or LDS) of Utah—undertook massive commemoration projects to memorialize their ancestors’ 1830s−1840s migrations into the interior, holding Afrikaners and Mormons up as the most worthy settler groups among each nation’s white population. This essay will argue that a close reading of these monuments reveals how each white settler group employed gendered depictions that were inflected by class and race in their claims to be the true heart of their respective settler societies, despite perceiving themselves as oppressed minorities.

Rather than focusing on how Italians share the neighbourhood with other groups, this paper examines some of the intra-group processes (i.e. relations between Italians themselves) that produced various monuments to Italian migration in Australia, Brazil and Italy. Through their distinct styles and formulations, the monuments reflect diverse and often competing elaborations of the migrant experience by different generations at local, national and transnational levels. The recent increase in the construction of such monuments in Australia is linked to the gradual disappearance of ‘visibly’ Italian neighbourhoods. These commemorations effectively transform Italian migrants into Australian pioneers and, thus, resolve moral and cultural ambiguities about belonging and identity by de-emphasizing difference (ethnic diversity) and concealing intergenerational tensions about appropriate ways of expressing Italianness. Similarly, the appearance of monuments in Italy is linked to an emergent ‘diasporic’ consciousness fuelled by Italian emigrants’ growing ability to travel to Italy, but also to the attempt to obscure potentially destabilizing dual identities by emphasizing (one, Italian) ‘homeland’.

The issue of the plot commonality of Kazakh fairy tales and ancient Indian written monuments has not yet become the subject of comprehensive scientific research, in this regard only separate works can be mentioned. Legends and myths from Eastern literature are not only absorbed by kazakh fairy tales, but also include many other works based on ancient stories. It is known that these legendary stories first passed from one to another literary monuments of India and were formed as a migration plot in the country itself. Then the migration plots spread to a number of countries of the world, then to the Central Asia and became the basis for topical works of neighboring peoples. The Kazakh literature includes numerous stories that originate from Indian literary relics. Special attention is paid to the abundance of stories common to Kazakh fairy tales and ancient Indian literary monuments. The current work reflects the nature of the legends that exist in the literature of the two countries, the ways of spreading the stories, their adaptation to the realities of the nation, their acquisition of new characteristics, as well as the ideas about the interaction of literatures. A comprehensive analysis of the differences and similarities of common plots is conducted.

Today more than 70 Pre-farming cultural monuments are discovered on the territory of Transcaucasisa. On the territory of Eastern Georgia, The Pre-farming culture, known as The Shulaveri-Shomutepe culture is familiar, which is more developed and relatively better preserved than The Neolithic settlements of Western Georgia. The topography of Western Georgia with a range of peculiarities is radically different from the types of the Eastern Georgian Neolithic settlements. The Shulaveri-Shomutepe settlement, which is known as the Shulaveri culture, is discovered in Eastern Georgia. During the study of the monument the scientists discovered the homes built with muud-bricks. Their design is round or cone-shaped. The settlement types and dwelling environment proves the sign of long life of numerous populations. In Eastern Georgia only the Late Neolithic monuments are found. Because of the warm climate of Western Georgia, the Neolithic human must have lived in a wicker peasant typed house. This conditioned sign of structures is not evident in the West. Only the pits for posts and economical purposes are discovered. So, the remains found in the earth which were used for rebuilding the weaker peasant typed houses that were out of order, only helps the increase of cultural layers insignificantly. According to the topographical layout and scientific observation, consequential migration of the Neolithic settlements from the mountain to the plain is evident according to the epoch. This is the sign of the fast evolution of society. In terms of topography, Western Georgian Neolithic monuments greatly differ. Shulaveri-Shomutepe cultural settlements are presented on the man-made hills and are relatively more developed than the Eastern Georgian settlements. Only very thin layers are presented in Western Georgia. The main thing is that the monuments of all periods are confirmed in the West as well as in the East, which is very important. Today the peculiarities of Neolithic culture remain the subject of discussion and need the search of new resources. The discovery and study of new artifacts may cause the becoming out-of-date of the Neolithic Era and arising of new questions.

Marginal and less-favored regions are characterized by negative migration balance, lower living standards, aging of the population, a lower number of employment opportunities, lower educational level, and lower investments in the territory. Gemer is one of these regions in Slovakia. On the other hand, the Gemer region has a very interesting history and many cultural monuments, nature protection areas, and UNESCO World Heritage sites that create options for tourism development. The monuments of the Gothic Road have the potential for religious tourism. Karst relief and the sites and monuments related to mining present on the Iron Road provide suitable conditions for geotourism and mining tourism. Local villages contain traditional agricultural landscapes, which create suitable conditions for active rural tourism associated with creative tourism or agrotourism. There is also the promising possibility of cross-border cooperation with Hungary. However, the revenues from tourism do not reach the same level as in other, similar regions of Slovakia. The main failings of tourism development include the insufficient coordination of destination marketing organization stakeholders, lack of care for monuments, and underestimation of the potential of Roma culture and art production. However, analyzed state policy instruments on the promotion of tourism did not mitigate but rather exacerbated regional disparities in Slovakia.

In the Scythian period, one of the regional features of the monuments in the Seim region was a small number of such tableware as bowls. The materials of the Shyriaievo hillfort in the Middle river Seim valley allow us to look at this issue from another position. So, if for the rest of the Left Bank forest-steppe there is a tendency to decrease the percentage ratio of the bowls from early to late Scythian periods, for the territory of the Seim region — the situation is directly opposite. However, the layer of the 4th century BC with the materials of the forest-steppe shapes there is only on the one hillfort — Shyriaievo, which does not allow extrapolating the conclusions to the whole region. It is not excluded that the population that left the upper horizon of the monument is alien. The question of migration from the south of the Sula River Group population to the Seim region, according to the materials of the hillfort Shyriaievo, remains open.

The article is devoted to analysis of materials from kurgan-cemeteries of the foothill zone of Central and Eastern North Caucasus regions (from Kabardino-Balkaria to Caspian Dagestan) dating back to the 3rd century BC – early (first half) 2nd century AD. These sites were earlier referred to as the Chegem-Manaskent type. Main diagnostic features of these sites are similar traditions of the funeral rite and the ceramic complex. The formation of the Chegem-Manaskent cultural monuments includes the material culture, determined by traditions of the North Caucasian sedentary population, and the funeral rite based on customs of the nomadic population of the North Caucasian steppes of the early Sarmatian period. The original territory of Chegem-Manaskent culture of monuments formation was the area from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic to the western part of the Chechen Republic. The kurgan cemeteries of the Caspian Dagestan were the result of the migration of Chegem-Manaskent culture carriers in this direction. The cultural traditions of the population formed a specific basis of the early Alanian culture of the North Caucasus (2nd–4th AD); their genetic connection is witnessed by similar funeral rite (burial in type I catacombs) and in the ceramic complex. So, the monuments of the Chegem-Manasket type underlie the formation of the monuments of the Podkumok-Khumara type, with which they are connected by the use of a catacomb burial rite with the repeated use of chamber for new graves and a ceramic complex. In addition, the ceramic complex of monuments of the circle of the Andreiauli settlement largely goes back to the ceramic tradition of antiquities Chegem-Manasket circle, complicated by the morphological influences of the tradition of Caucasian Albania including the use of the transformed catacomb burial rite with multiple use of chamber graves and the ceramic complex.

AbstractThe reuse of ancient burial grounds in prehistory is a practice that has long been testified through archaeological investigations for several periods in European prehistory. As burial mounds form a distinctive feature in the landscape—to some extent even today—the perception and appropriation of these does not come as a great surprise. Still, this appropriation and reuse for burial or other non-funerary activities offers insights into cultural practices that have only recently been frequently discussed in the field. Normally these reuses are interpreted as ancestor veneration—be it of putative or real ancestors—or the use of these monuments is considered in terms of legitimation of power structures and social distinction by elites. The diversity, frequency, and distribution of such reuses nevertheless indicate that through time older monuments are reused not only by social elites but also by other parts of these societies, and by different forms of communities. This paper will focus on northern Central Europe during the Iron Ages (Pre-Roman Iron Age, Roman Iron Age, Migration Period) and discuss how different societies (‘culture groups’) reused ancient burial places as well as other locations and objects through time and space. These findings show the importance of the long-gone dead in Iron Age Europe and form the basis for a discussion of different possible interpretations of appropriations of the distant past.

This chapter explores how art in public spaces shapes, and is shaped by, disagreements and conflicts resulting from the need to tackle »togetherness in difference« (Ien Ang), and how contemporary artistic practices play out in postmigrant public spaces, understood as plural domains of human encounter impacted by former and ongoing migration, and by new forms of nationalism. The chapter focuses on two art projects in Copenhagen, Denmark. The first one is The Red Square, a part of the public park Superkilen in the multicultural Nørrebro district. Designed by the artist group Superflex (in collaboration with architects from Bjarke Ingels Group and Topotek1), Superkilen opened in 2012. The second project is Jeannette Ehlers and La Vaughn Belle's collaboration on the sculpture I Am Queen Mary. Installed outside an old colonial Warehouse in Copenhagen harbour in 2018, it is the first monument in the country to commemorate Danish colonialism and complicity in the transatlantic slave trade. Borrowing a term from Chantal Mouffe, these projects could be characterized as »agonistic« interventions into public urban space. The chapter argues that they may provide us with some much-needed answers to the important question of the much debated yet crucial role of public art in democratic societies, particularly how works of art may form a possible loophole of escape from dominant discourses by openly contesting, or subtly circumventing, monocultural understandings of national heritage and identity, thereby helping us to imagine national and urban community otherwise, i.e. as postmigrant communities. The chapter examines what the re-configurative power of art might accomplish in postmigrant public spaces by considering the following questions: How can public art open up a social and national imagination pervaded by anxieties about (post)migration to other ways of thinking about diversity and collective identity? Furthermore, is it possible to identify a common pattern - i.e. a particular postmigrant strategy - that underpins and interconnects various types of artistic interventions into public spaces and debates, which, on the surface, present themselves as radically different kinds of projects?

Located in El Paso, Texas, next to the border fence separating the US from Mexico, a fascinating and truly puzzling series of four historical markers stand together: one dedicated to local Confederates James W. Magoffin and Simeon Hart, another to a historic migration route, a third to a settler colonial agent, and the fourth completely blank-whether by intentional defacement, weather erasure, or abandoned plans. Interpreting the collection of markers as a contact zone that, if re-envisioned, might encourage border crossing rather than closing borders and might emphasize the future rather than the past, this chapter raises important questions about Confederate monuments and the interdependent legacies of slavery and settler colonialism across the United States, not just in the South. To conclude, it meditates on monuments' temporality, with the absent history of the blank marker emblematizing futurity, beckoning for and yet resisting attempts to read it.

Abstract This chapter explores the lives of individual Phoenician immigrants in three Greek city-states over three centuries, through an examination of primarily bilingual inscriptions on tombstones from fourth-century bce Athens, third-century bce Demetrias in Thessaly, and second-century bce Rhodes. The evidence illustrates how these immigrants coped with migration and reveals similarities across time and space in the adaptive strategies that Phoenician immigrants adopted to facilitate their lives as immigrants and encourage a sense of belonging in their new homes. The chapter discusses three main strategies—name changing, the adoption and incorporation of local customs into immigrants’ cultural practices, and immigrants’ eventual participation in the civic life of their host city. These adaptations allowed Phoenician immigrants to become better integrated into their new societies, despite their persistent use of the Phoenician language and script on both private and public monuments. Such integration, the chapter argues, was a two-way process that involved both the migrants’ adaptive repertoires and the migration and membership regimes of the host states, eventually leading to the acceptance, inclusion, and incorporation of migrants into the civic bodies of their host states and a transformation of the migrants themselves.

This chapter looks at the shift in Medardo Rosso's position from an outsider in his own country to a foreigner in France. Rosso's move to Paris belongs to the wider phenomenon of increased migration by artists to the principal metropolis of modern art toward the end of the century. It also confirms his awareness of a new kind of transnational mobility. Tracing Rosso's trajectory as a form of self-exile characteristic of cultural anarchists, the chapter examines his hopeful but obstacle-ridden expatriation and his struggle to make avant-garde sculpture in the epoch and city dominated by Rodin. Paris at the end of the nineteenth-century offered Rosso new opportunities, such as a vibrant art scene, a burgeoning market for serial sculpture, and a network of sophisticated artists, collectors, and critics.

The Hospital II settlement is located in the coastal part of Kerch in the basin of Dzhardzhava river. Excavations of the settlement were carried out in 2017 in connection with the construction of the Crimean bridge. Six housing and economic complexes, household pits, an artificial platform, enclosed by stone walls, were investigated. The complex of findings allows to construct vertical and horizontal stratigraphy and chronological chain of development of this site. The most informative findings refer to the Kamensk culture of the Eastern Crimea and, in general, to the Kamensk-Leventsovsk horizon of the Middle Bronze Age. They confirm that the cultural peculiarities of the “catacombs” with the participation of the tribes of the wide district in the Eastern Crimea were transformed into a special type of monuments. Complexes of the Late Babinsk-Srubna horizon and further – of Early Belozersky emphasize the complex ways of development of the original population of the region. Probably, the investigated object was a winter village, the inhabitants of which were engaged in distant-pasture cattle breeding. The territory was also used in the antique era, but to a lesser extent. 9 burials were found: 1 – of catacomb culture, 5 – of Babinsk-Srubna horizon, 1 – of the era of the Great Migration of Nations and 2 – destroyed, of indefinite time.

Abstract This paper introduces a pioneering methodology aimed at significantly enhancing the efficiency of CO2 capture within Direct Air Capture (DAC) stations, leveraging insights derived from extensive research conducted by the esteemed Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. At its core, this study revolves around the strategic deployment of sophisticated sound transducers in close proximity to DAC facilities, with the objective of emitting precisely calibrated ultrasound waves falling within the discerning frequency spectrum of 30 kHz to 60 kHz. This frequency range meticulously corresponds to the resonant frequency of CO2 molecules, thereby engendering a remarkable phenomenon wherein CO2 molecules evince heightened directional responsiveness, gravitating with discernible intent towards the focal point of the capture station. Consequently, this orchestrated migration fosters the emergence of localized CO2-enriched zones, engendering a palpable surge in capture efficiency of profound significance. The experimental inquiries embarked upon within this study have been meticulously crafted, drawing upon a rich tapestry of established methodologies culled from the annals of specialized literature. These inquiries meticulously scrutinize an array of gas mixtures, deliberately engineered to encapsulate the diverse compositional permutations emblematic of authentic operational conditions encountered within DAC frameworks. The resultant findings yield a resounding testament to the efficacy of the proposed methodology, with observed enhancements in the separation ratio eclipsing baseline measurements by a formidable order of magnitude in discernible instances. Particularly noteworthy are the scenarios characterized by a compositional makeup of 90% N2 and 10% CO2, wherein the separation ratio ascends to staggering heights surpassing the vaunted threshold of 1000, thus unequivocally affirming the monumental strides achieved in advancing the capture process to unprecedented echelons of proficiency. Moreover, this comprehensive study serves as a veritable crucible for the elucidation of intricate phenomena, chief among them being the nuanced orchestration of collective motion discernible amongst CO2 molecules under the sway of high-frequency sound waves. These revelations serve to underscore the vast expanse of potential ramifications extending across a diverse spectrum of interdisciplinary domains, encompassing but not confined to the realms of geophysics and the avant-garde milieu of environmental technologies. Through the judicious harnessing of the propitious attributes intrinsic to high-frequency sound waves, this pioneering framework beckons forth the promise of catalyzing a seismic paradigm shift within the realm of atmospheric carbon capture, thereby heralding a transformative epoch in the ceaseless global crusade against the specter of climate change and the insidious scourge of atmospheric contamination.

In 2022, the Klamath Inventory and Monitoring Network (KLMN) of the National Park Service implemented the 14th year of a long-term landbird monitoring protocol. Klamath Bird Observatory, in partnership with the KLMN, developed the protocol and completed this 14-year effort. Multiple standard avian sampling methods were implemented, including variable circular plot point counts, area search surveys, mist netting, species checklists, and habitat surveys. In 2022, a fifth year of point counts was completed, along with corresponding species checklists and habitat surveys, at 35 locations within Crater Lake National Park, 4 locations within Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, 24 locations within Lassen Volcanic National Park, and 30 locations within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Unlike in previous years, 4 rather than 2 national park units were monitored. This change in survey effort was made to compensate for surveys that were missed during 2020 when no monitoring was conducted due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The operation of an ongoing constant effort monitoring station, which included mist netting, point counts, area searches, species checklists, and habitat surveys, continued at Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve during the breeding and fall migration seasons. Relative abundance (birds/station), as measured by point count and area search methods, was calculated for all survey sites combined within each park. Total captures, by season, were calculated using constant effort mist netting data. Species of conservation importance were among the most abundant species at each park. Results are presented along with conservation status of individual species based on Partners in Flight state and continental plans and Oregon and California Wildlife Conservation Strategies. This 14th year of implementation of the KLMN landbird monitoring program continued to lay the groundwork for improved understanding of landbird status and long-term trends in each park. When analyzed in the framework of the Klamath Bird Monitoring Network, the contribution of KLMN parks to bird conservation in this region will help inform landbird conservation in the West.

The National Park Service (NPS) Water Resources Division’s Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program initiated an NRCA project with Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU) in 2022. The purpose of an NRCA is to synthesize information related to the primary drivers and stressors affecting natural resource conditions at a park and to report conditions for natural resource topics selected by park managers. Resource conditions are evaluated as either a condition assessment or a gap analysis, depending on data availability. For FOPU’s NRCA, managers selected salt marsh, shorebirds, Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica), and butterflies as the focal resources. FOPU is comprised of two islands in coastal Georgia, McQueens and Cockspur, which are separated by the Savannah River near its confluence with the Atlantic Ocean. Cockspur Island contains the 19th century masonry fort, Fort Pulaski, and the monument’s visitor services and facilities and is primarily constructed with dredge material from the Savannah River. McQueens Island is almost entirely salt marsh habitat and most of its area is eligible federal wilderness, containing one of Georgia’s oyster recreational harvest areas (RHAs), Oyster Creek RHA. Both McQueens and Cockspur islands are designated as a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Protected Area (MPA), underscoring FOPU’s natural resource significance. Riverine, freshwater, and estuarine wetlands cover 83.81% of FOPU, with the latter accounting for almost 99% of all monument wetlands. Persistently emergent vegetation of smooth cordgrasses (Spartina spp.) and unconsolidated shore represent the dominant wetland types. McQueens Island estuarine wetlands were evaluated for 11 functions and were rated primarily as high functioning, except for the wetland north of Highway 80, where the causeway has altered its ability to function properly. The wetland west of the Highway 80 bend is composed of unconsolidated material so was rated as moderately functioning in carbon sequestration, retention of sediments, and shore stabilization. In contrast, the unconsolidated shore wetland in the Oyster Creek RHA, where the highest concentration of FOPU’s oysters occurs, were rated high for all expected wetland functions. In 2013, over 75% of the total oyster area from within four of Georgia’s RHAs was in the Oyster Creek RHA. A spectral analysis of oyster density in Oyster Creek RHA, comparing 2013 and 2018 images, reported an increase in the high-density class, a decrease in the moderate-low class, and an increase in the no oyster class, with the latter likely a function of how oyster areas were drawn between the images. A successful 2013 enhanced reef project in Oyster Creek RHA reported a pre-enhancement oyster area of 2.68 m2 (28.8 ft2) that increased to 894.2 m2 (0.22 ac) of oysters by 2018. FOPU’s extensive salt marsh habitat and beaches provide critical food sources and habitat for shorebirds in the Atlantic Flyway, especially during the pre-breeding season. The American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliates), Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), and the federally threatened rufa subspecies of Red Knot (Calidris canutus rufa) are identified as high priority species in the flyway and have been observed on Cockspur Island during the Manomet International Shorebird Surveys (2019–2022) at FOPU. The USFWS (2023) is seeking additional critical habitat designation, which will include Cockspur Island, for the rufa subspecies of Red Knot, whose estimated population abundance trend is declining throughout its entire range. FOPU’s non-wetland, upland habitat is primarily located on Cockspur Island and supports vegetation that can serve as host, roost and/or nectar plants for pollinators, especially butterflies. Cedar–Live Oak–Cabbage Palmetto (Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola–Q. virginiana–Sabal palmetto) Marsh Hammock and Cabbage Palmetto Woodland contain the most diversity of beneficial butterfly plants. While a comprehensive butterfly inventory is needed, fall migration surveys have recorded three target species of the Butterflies of the Atlantic Flyway (BAFA): monarch (Danaus plexippus), gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae), and cloudless sulphur (Phoebis sennae). Collectively, FOPU’s natural resources are affected by the sea level, which has risen by 0.35 m (1.15 ft) from 1935 to 2022. Hardened shorelines, such as causeways or armored structures, are identified as the greatest threat to the salt marsh habitat’s ability to migrate upland with continued sea level rise. Erosion along Cockspur Island’s north shore is an ongoing issue and FOPU managers have been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop solutions to address the erosion, while also creating habitat for shorebirds. Several agencies routinely monitor for water and sediment pollution in and around FOPU, which, if managed collectively, can inform landscape-level management actions to address drivers that are influencing resource conditions at the ecosystem level.
