Theatre practitioners have often had a rather paradoxical relationship with performance spaces. On one hand, we tend to assert that performances can (and do) occur everywhere; yet, on the other hand, theatre buildings are seen as a privileged site: an artistic home, a place for “serious” works and often a visible indicator that a theatrical company has come into its own professionally. It is perhaps ironic that, at the very historical moment that theatrical tropes seem to be everywhere — in the marketing of the urban as a performative identity or in the new “experience economy,” where “work is theatre and every business a stage” (Pine and Gilmour) — the number of viable, affordable spaces for actual theatre productions and rehearsals has dwindled rapidly.

La presente investigación, producto de un trabajo de maestría de la Escuela superior de administración pública, en sinergia con la Fundación Universitaria Comfenalco Santander, establece en primer lugar una caracterización de las principales empresas de servicios públicos de acueducto, aseo y alcantarillado del Área Metropolitana de Bucaramanga (AMB), desde sus capacidades de prestación de servicios en la actualidad. La segunda parte muestra el comportamiento económico de la empresa de servicio público con proyección triple A del AMB, en un posible escenario a futuro de conformación de distrito metropolitano. La tercera parte, desarrolla la prospectiva de la empresa de servicio público, con la capacidad de convertirse en triple A, suministrando servicios continuos con cobertura del AMB, en sinergia con otras entidades, permitiendo hacer frente al crecimiento poblacional, el desarrollo territorial y la proyección a distrito metropolitano, definiendo las variables estratégicas sobre las que se deben actuar en el largo plazo, las cuales tienen una alta influencia en el sistema y los posibles escenarios a futuro de la organización, de forma que sea una guía para el proceso de planeación y toma de decisiones, que incluya los posibles cambios en el entorno producto de la dinámica regional. Finalmente, el estudio se podría convertir en un insumo para la propuesta de la Cámara de Comercio de Bucaramanga, sobre la viabilidad de establecer una alternativa de cohesión en el área de servicios públicos para los municipios que conforman el Área Metropolitana de Bucaramanga en su proyección a distrito. This research first establishes a characterization of the main aqueduct, cleaning, and sewerage public service companies of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area (AMB), from their current service provision capabilities. The second part shows the economic behavior of the public service company with triple A projection of the AMB, in the territorial development and the projection to the metropolitan district. The third part develops the prospective of the triple A public service companies of the AMB, in front of the territorial development and the projection to the metropolitan district, defining the strategic variables on which they must act in the long term, which have a high influence in the system and the possible future scenarios of the organization so that it is a guide for the planning and decision-making process, which includes possible changes in the environment as a result of territorial development. Finally, the study could become an input for the Bucaramanga Chamber of Commerce proposal on the feasibility of establishing a cohesion alternative in the public services area for the municipalities that make up the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area.

Financial statement analysis is used to determine the company's financial performance as a consideration in making decisions and evaluating the company's financial performance for the next period. However, the financial statements prepared by each company do not fully meet the applicable accounting standards and principles. For this reason, the accounting process requires Financial Accounting Standards (SAK) that contains guidelines for every transaction made by the company. This standard allows interested parties to interpret and compare its financial statements with other companies. PT Metropolitan Kentjana Tbk has been able to present information about the basis for preparing financial statements, providing information that has not been presented in the financial statements including displaying the general description of the company, accounting policies, and an overview of accounting policies, and others. This shows that the financial statements of PT Metropolitan Kentjana Tbk for the notes to the financial statements have met the existing standards. The financial statements presented by PT Metropolitan Kentjana Tbk have met the requirements in PSAK 01

Cultural enterprises are today an important component in the development processes of many territories. In urban centers—particularly those located within metropolitan areas—cultural companies constitute a main element of the economy, due to their ability to activate new production chains and revitalize local regions. The objective of this work is to examine the traditional cultural sector (subsectors 18, 59, 60, 90 and 91 of NACE-09) of small and medium-sized cities from the perspective of the financial conditions of the particular companies involved. The use of multivariate techniques for reducing dimensions enables the specification of key factors within the financial structures of companies to assemble homogeneous groups of firms, in order to then determine which factors influence their profitability in both intra- and extra-metropolitan contexts. The results of the applied method indicate heterogeneity in the financial situations of these cultural industries in the activities and cities analyzed. Differences are marked in the financial profiles of cultural companies in intra-metropolitan environments in terms of business profitability, debt quality, financial stability, investment capacity, and costs of personnel. On the other hand, the economic-financial structures of companies in extra-metropolitan cities are determined through efficiency in the allocation of economic-financial resources, profit margins, and investment capacity. Belonging to one cultural sub-sector or another and a particular location within an intra- or extra-metropolitan urban environment also play some part in a company’s economic and financial structure. Hence there is a need to differentiate the design of intervention strategies (instruments) aimed at promoting the system/environment to which the company belongs as well as the company itself.

Reflecting a commitment to public service and an interest in abiding investments, life insurance companies after the Second World War were responsible for the construction of an unprecedented number of housing developments across the United States. They were able to help alleviate housing shortages, elevate the standards of postwar housing, and offer new forms of modern living. This article examines the practices of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and its developing of Parklabrea (now Park La Brea) in Los Angeles during the 1940s. As the largest housing community west of the Mississippi River, Parklabrea stands prominently in the center of the city, though it is elided in histories of California housing. Against the backdrop of postwar public housing, which failed in part due to a disregard for urban context, Parklabrea’s history reveals how life insurance companies were increasingly attuned to the social, physical, and economic contexts of postwar cities.

Cell phone technology has advanced rapidly with the start of 5G being rolled out across the networks. To keep up with this demand, cell tower companies have responded by erecting numerous towers. Engineers and researchers analyze the network topography to make recommendations for cell tower locations. Cell tower companies evaluate these recommendations using a host of other factors. In this research, a model was developed to help a regional telecommunications company predict throughput for locations using competitive and demand factors. Model results represented a large improvement over internal key performance indicators.

Este estudo visa a demonstrar a importância da conscientização da gerência intermediária, por meio da educação ambiental, para atuar como agente multiplicador na implantação de um sistema de gestão ambiental (SGA) em uma companhia de trens metropolitanos. Opta-se como método o estudo de caso, com análise documental, observação nos setores de trabalho e aplicação de questionário. A pesquisa foi realizada na Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM), no período compreendido entre março de 2004 e novembro de 2005, durante etapa preparatória para implantação do SGA. A CPTM é uma empresa do Governo do Estado de São Paulo e é responsável pela operação do serviço de transporte coletivo sobre trilhos na região metropolitana da cidade de São Paulo. Os sujeitos da pesquisa são 36 agentes multiplicadores (gerência intermediária), divididos em 18 supervisores de manutenção, 02 supervisores de materiais e 16 chefes gerais de estações. Recebem treinamento sobre conceitos de conscientização ambiental, que aborda a legislação ambiental vigente no País e os principais aspectos e impactos ambientais gerados na CPTM. Depois do treinamento, repassam os conhecimentos adquiridos para as suas equipes, nas quais exercem papel de liderança. Decorridos nove meses, aplica-se um questionário para a gerência intermediária, abordando, entre outros aspectos, as atitudes e ações tomadas frente a questões ambientais. Entre os resultados significativos, destacam-se: (1) a evolução da atuação sobre o uso racional da água em 25%, da energia elétrica em 22,2% e do uso do papel em 19,4%; (2) 86,1% dos agentes multiplicadores notificaram, após repassarem o treinamento de meio ambiente, entre média e bastante mudança de atitude de suas equipes em relação às questões ambientais. Os resultados demonstram a eficácia de utilizar a gerência intermediária como agente multiplicador na implantação do sistema de gestão ambiental na CPTM.
This study has as its aim to show the importance of the awareness of the intermediary managership, through environmental education, to actuate as multiplying agent in the implantation of a environmental management system(SGA) at a company of metropolitan trains. As a method, the option is the study of occurrence, with documental analisis, watching the work sections and questionnaire application. The survey was realized at São Paulos Company of Metropolitan Trains(CPTM), in the period of time between March 2004 and November 2005, during preparatory stage for the implantation of the SGA. The CPTM is a company of São Paulos States government, and it is responsible for the operation of the collective transportation above railroads in the metropolitan region of the city of São Paulo. The surveyed were 36 multiplying agents(intermediary managership), divided in 18 maintenance supervisors, 02 of equipment and 16 general heads of stations. They receive training about concepts of environmental awareness, that covers the environmental legislation that is in force in the country ant the most important environmental aspects and impacts generated at CPTM. After the training, they impart the acquired knowledges to their teams, in which they perform the role of leadership. Nine months later, it is applied a questionnaire for the intermediary managership to answer, that covers, among other aspects, the attitudes and actions to be taken in face of environmental issues. Among the most significative results, these stand out: (1) the improvement in the rational use of water in 25%, for the use of electrical energy in 22,2% and for the use of paper in 19,4%; (2) 86,1% of the multiplying agents notified, after imparting the training about the environment, between average and a lot of change in the attitude of their teams facing environmental issues. The results show the efficacy of using the intermediary managership as multiplying agent in the implantation of a environmental managership system at CPTM.

The Metropolitan Railroad Company Site in Roxbury (Boston), Massachusetts, was first excavated in the late 1970s by staff of the Museum of Afro American History. Researchers recovered nearly 20,000 artifacts related to the site's life as a horsecar street railway station and carriage manufacturer from 1860 to 1891, its subsequent conversion into an electric street railway until around 1920, and finally its modern use as an automobile garage. Using the framework of behavioral archaeology, this project uses GIS-based spatial methods and newly collected documentary evidence to reexamine the site's assemblage of horse accoutrements and carriage manufacturing byproducts. Artifact distribution maps overlaid on detailed historic maps reveal that carriage manufacturing ceased concurrent with street railway electrification, but horse harness craftsmanship continued on to serve in new capacities, highlighting nuances in the narrative of technological change onsite and connecting the life histories of materials to historical actors involved with these transitions.

The paper deals with the description and analysis of public transport in major cities of the Russian Federation and the Czech Republic - Prague and Moscow. Attention is devoted mainly to the state, plans and prospects of development, investment and crime. Very interesting part is the history of public transportation in both cities. Based on the information gathered, the adequacy of public transport for both cities, the size of transport companies, financing of public transport have been evaluated. Chapter plans and prospects informes about the planned construction of new metro lines in Prague and Moscow, which will help to improve infrastructure in the suburban areas of mentioned cities.

El presente trabajo de tesis tiene como objetivo ser una ayuda para el emprendedor, orientándolo en la línea de crecimiento de su pequeña empresa al analizar la influencia del liderazgo del emprendedor en la etapa de crecimiento de la pequeña empresa exitosa en el sector servicios, en Lima Metropolitana. En el primer capítulo, se investiga y presenta el marco teórico, mismo que ayudará a darnos una idea del contexto en el que una pequeña empresa exitosa se mueve, describiendo como primer punto, a la empresa en el contexto actual y su ciclo de vida así como para entender en qué parte del mismo, se sitúa la presente investigación. De igual forma se incluirán conceptos tales como emprendedor y competencia, así como los tipos y características que estos tienen. El capítulo cierra con la descripción de los sectores económicos, con la finalidad de explicar el contexto en el que están inmersas las pequeñas empresas exitosas hoy en día. Todo ello para, así, finalmente, poder realizar la orientación consistente y precisa al emprendedor, inicialmente indicada. En el segundo capítulo, se explica la metodología y fuente de datos. Se lleva a cabo una investigación cualitativa del tipo descriptiva y explicativa, empleando un diseño de teoría fundamentada. Esta se realiza con el fin de comprobar el tipo de liderazgo que debe ser ejercido por el emprendedor en la etapa de crecimiento de su pequeña empresa exitosa. En el tercer capítulo, se recopila y analiza la información relevante obtenida en el trabajo de campo, de los segmentos definidos con la finalidad de dar respuesta a cada una de las preguntas de investigación propuestas. En el cuarto capítulo, se detallan los hallazgos y barreras encontradas a lo largo de todo el proceso de la presente investigación. Finalmente, se presentan las conclusiones y recomendaciones finales tras revisar los resultados de la presente investigación, las cuales serán esenciales para que el emprendedor pueda tomar mejores decisiones y llegue a tener una empresa sostenible. Así mismo, el presente trabajo de investigación dará pautas a futuros tesistas para nuevas investigaciones.
This thesis work aims to be an aid for the entrepreneur to guide him in the line of growth of his small business by analyzing the influence of the entrepreneur's leadership in the growth stage of the successful small business in the service sector, in Lima Metropolitana. In the first chapter, the theoretical framework is investigated and presented. This framework will help us to give you an idea of the context in which a successful small business is immerse, it also describes the company in the current context and its life cycle, to understand in which part of the present investigation is located. Likewise, concepts such as entrepreneur and competence will be included, as well as the types and characteristics they have. The chapter closes with the description of the economic sectors, with the purpose of explaining the context in which current successful small businesses are immersed. All this in order to be able to carry out the consistent and precise orientation for the entrepreneur. In the second chapter, the methodology and data source is explained. A qualitative research of descriptive and explanatory type is carried out, using a grounded theory design. This is done in order to check the type of leadership that should be exercised by the entrepreneur in the growth stage of his successful small business. In the third chapter, the relevant information obtained in the fieldwork is collected and analyzed from the segments defined in order to answer each of the proposed research questions. The fourth chapter details the findings and barriers found throughout the entire process of the present investigation. Finally, the conclusions and final recommendations will be presented after reviewing the results of the present research, which will be essential for the entrepreneur to make better decisions in order to achieve a sustainable company. Likewise, the present research work will give guidelines to future thesis students for new research.

The morphological form of South African cities is deemed inefficient and fragmented. Much of the current structure has been shaped by i) the political history of the country, with major influences from the colonial and apartheid eras; and ii) suburban sprawl influenced by the use of private vehicles. This presents obstacles to the sustainable and equitable development of our cities. Since the 1990s, efforts have been made to change the development of the country in order to accommodate previously disenfranchised communities through processes of reconstruction and development. Among these efforts are policies and frameworks aimed at guiding the development and growth of cities. Among the many approaches that have been identified are land use strategies, with the central focus of promoting densification and intensification of urban development. Emphasis on densification in certain public transport corridors and decentralised nodes are in general regarded as urban restructuring elements necessary to transform South African cities into efficient and sustainable areas. However, analytical tools that can explore the possibilities and limits of public transport-orientated development are scarce at present. The University of Utrecht in the Netherlands has developed an analytical model referred to as the node-place model, which can be used to profile nodes and to determine their (re)development potential. This study makes a contribution towards efforts to support the densification concept in general and nodal intensification in particular by applying the node-place model to a selection of railway stations in the Cape Town metropolitan area in order to identify appropriate land use developments to enhance their potential. The model was found to be a useful mechanism for comparing nodes within a transport system for purposes of informing decisions regarding how the nodes should be developed. However, the model requires more accurate and disaggregated data than is generally available for the Cape Town area.

The contemporary urban development pattern in the United States is characterized by land consumptive nature of development, such as a sprawled development pattern. Out of concern that the social and environmental costs of this development pattern outweigh their benefits, cities, counties and states have created a wide range of policy instruments designed to manage urban growth and to protect open spaces from development. The present research deals with such strategies in three study areas namely Portland Metropolitan Area, OR; Montgomery County, MD; and Orange County, FL in order to find out if growth management strategies have been able to reduce sprawl and promote a compact form of development. Based mainly on secondary sources of information, the research evaluates the characteristics, effectiveness, strengths and weaknesses of selected growth management strategies employed in each of these areas and analyses their implications for promoting a compact form of development.

Suburban growth in the U.S. urban regions has been defined by large subdivisions of single-family detached units. This growth is made possible by the mobility supported by automobiles and an extensive highway network. These dispersed and highly automobile-dependent developments have generated a large body of work examining the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of suburban growth on cities. The particular debate that this study addresses is whether suburban residents are more energy intensive in their travel behavior than central city residents. If indeed suburban residents have needs that are not satisfied by the amenities around them, they may be traveling farther to access such services. However, if suburbs are becoming like cities with a wide range of services and amenities, travel might be contained and no different from the travel behavior of residents in central areas. This paper will compare the effects of long term suburban growth on travel behavior, energy consumption, and GHG emissions through a case study of neighborhoods in central Phoenix and the city of Gilbert, both in the Phoenix metropolitan region. Motorized travel patterns in these study areas will be generated using 2001 and 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data by developing a four-step transportation demand model in TransCAD. Energy consumption and GHG emissions, including both Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) and Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) for each study area will be estimated based on the corresponding trip distribution results. The final normalized outcomes will not only be compared spatially between Phoenix and Gilbert within the same year, but also temporally between years 2001 and 2009 to determine how the differential land use changes in those places influenced travel. The results from this study reveal that suburban growth does have an impact on people's travel behaviors. As suburbs grew and diversified, the difference in travel behavior between people living in suburban and urban areas became smaller. In the case of shopping trips the average length of trips for suburban residents in 2009 was slightly shorter than that for central city residents. This convergence was substantially due to the faster growth in trip lengths for central city compared to suburban residents in the 8-year period. However, suburban residents continue to be more energy intensive in their travel behavior, as the effect of reduction in trip length is likely to be offset by the more intensive growth in trip frequency. Additionally, overall energy consumption has grown significantly in both study areas over the period of study.

AbstractThe phenomenon of urban brownfields is significant throughout European metropolitan areas. In this chapter, we assess, both in qualitative and quantitative terms, the inherent potential of urban brownfields to provide a relevant and substantial densification strategy for metropolitan areas. First, we explore the various opportunities for improvement of the built environment offered by urban brownfields in terms of environment, society, and economics, which are the core principles of sustainable development. This analysis is, inter alia, a juxtaposition between urban brownfields and the compact and polycentric city model, adapted to the metropolitan area. While brownfield regeneration appears to be a relevant densification strategy, it nevertheless implies that a sufficient reserve of land is available to engage policymakers. Thus, we attempt to estimate the urban brownfield stock in three countries: the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and France. The data subsequently serves as a basis for our calculation of the theoretical construction potential of brownfield sites.

AbstractThe chapter is focused on collaborative processes through which the functions and spatial hierarchies of public or public use areas are redefined. The field of action is: on the one hand the urban metabolism, interpreted as a study of the life cycle of the city, including wastescapes; on the other, collaborative processes, aimed at defining the uses of tailored, place-based, and collective services. In this sense, the research moves from the analysis of places born for public use, but abandoned over time or never actually completed; disused places waiting to reenter the urban metabolism. Among those, there are also Italian “planning standards,” publicly designed in compliance with the quantities defined by law, and often partially used or not properly managed. The proposal of new uses and services for these contexts is based on criteria of flexibility, not fixed once and for all, not predetermined in time, but in progress in order to overcome the limits of the implementation of policies and programs of the past. These integrated processes can activate a dialogue between public institutions, privates, local associations and citizens’ groups. The research also intends to cross-reference the issue of spatial inequalities in access to spaces and services, with the evolution of the public actor from provider to service enabler, in a wider redefinition of welfare and welfare spaces concept, as an effect of global economic and financial crisis. The question needs non-sectoral responses, which take into account environmental, social, spatial issues. Welfare can no longer be provided as a self-sufficiency device: contextual services, for everyone, can be realized by recapitalizing wastescapes, co-creating “planning standards” through the recovery of degraded local contexts, collectively investing in the use and care of public, and open services. The paper will focus on: (a) the case of the former NATO area in Naples (in Bagnoli neighborhood) which is the subject of a Plan for urban renewal, adopted by the Municipality of Naples in 2020. The area, owned by a public company whose purpose is the assistance of children in the disadvantaged segment (Fondazione Campania Welfare), has been redesigned as a public facility on a metropolitan scale, within a public consultation process between the ownership, the Municipality of Naples and several local stakeholders (third sector organizations, citizens, cultural associations, etc.). As an effect of this collaborative process, the reuse of the area started before the adoption of the Plan; (b) the case of Horizon2020 research REPAiR in which the issue of circular economy applied to the recovery of wastescapes for public purposes has been investigated in living labs, working on waste perception and awareness as key factors for regenerating wastelands. The co-creation process partly resumed a strategy foreseen in 2013 by the Campania Region in the Plan of waste prevention, for the implementation of Integrated Centres for the reuse of durable goods, originally excluded by the Regional Waste Law.

AbstractBetween 2000 and 2020, Australia’s population grew almost 24% to 25 million. Most of this growth occurred in Australia’s major cities, acutely exacerbating sprawl, which has been a planning challenge since the mid- to late twentieth century. The urban-policy response has been toward more compact cities via ‘infill’—redevelopment within existing urban boundaries. This chapter distinguishes between former industrial ‘brownfield’ infill and the more challenging ‘greyfield’ infill. Greyfields comprise ageing, under-capitalised, low-density suburbia. Most metropolitan planning strategies enable small-scale, ad hoc greyfield redevelopment that tends to erase suburban qualities while only slightly increasing density. As a result, infill targets are not being met. But there is another way, outlined here as ‘greyfield precinct regeneration’: larger-scale integrated redevelopment facilitated through land assembly and supportive state and municipal planning policy.

AbstractGreen building technologies and design-correlated choices may significantly contribute to supporting the transition toward net energy flows in the built environment. Nevertheless, large discrepancies are underlined between standard simulated and monitored building behaviours requiring approaches able to simply correlate real building behaviours and simulated ones to further support coherent certification and/or optimization. The paper focusses on the application of a semi-automatic methodology to compare and evaluate thermal behaviours of buildings considering monitored and simulated data. The approach is based on a new Python tool developed by the authors, able to manage EnergyPlus inputs and perform multi-source KPIs calculations. The mentioned tool is used here to support semi-automatic model verifications of real weather data by optimizing model parameters to fit monitored behaviours. The approach is applied in this chapter to two demo buildings, a municipality school and a residential unit, located in the Turin metropolitan area of Piedmont, in Northwest Italy.

AbstractThis chapter goes over how Covid-19 pandemic impacted in space and time on cycling infrastructure in four French cities (Grenoble, Lyon, Montpellier, and Rennes) which we have compared with Bogotá (Colombia). It shows that local authorities implemented different strategies to develop their networks during this unusual period running from 2020 to 2021. The sizeable task of researching, refining, harmonising, and comparing several sources was formalised to ensure reproducibility, and a typology drawn up to compare the five cities. Certain local authorities installed equipment mainly in central spaces, while others also extended infrastructure to the outskirts, in certain cases duplicating pre-existing cycling facilities. In some cities, such as Montpellier, Grenoble, and even more markedly Bogotá, low-income districts also benefited to a certain extent from pop-up cycling infrastructure. Concerning the extent of coverage, two years after the beginning of the pandemic, most of the pop-up cycling infrastructure in the cities under study had been dismantled, or else retained on the already dense parts of the network. In several cases pop-up tracks were used to make up for missing links in the pre-existing network. They also sometimes provided a way of improving certain connections, but given the small number of pop-up paths which became lasting facilities, they have not fundamentally expanded the scale of the networks as the pandemic recedes, nor have they made the cities significantly more cycle-friendly overall.

AbstractThis chapter asks how socio-spatial segregation, school choices and residential choices are related in the relatively egalitarian Finnish education system. In many countries, school choice policies have been viewed as a means of desegregating schools by removing the immediate link between home address and school allocation through allowing pupils to select schools in different locations. However, international research points to school choice increasing school segregation, and our long-term research on the Helsinki metropolitan area demonstrates this in the Finnish context as well. The tendency towards school segregation is increased by the effect that school and school catchment area segregation have on the residential mobility of families with children. By combining register-based research and qualitative evidence, we describe the complex interconnections of social and spatial processes contributing to growth of segregation and educational inequality in urban schools and neighbourhoods in Finland. Processes operating at multiple scales exacerbate the risk of self-perpetuating vicious circles of segregation, where segregation in schools and neighbourhoods feed into each other. Besides the macro-level patterns of segregation in the cities and their education systems, local hierarchies between neighbouring schools and between school classes may further segregate schools and their individual catchment areas. Such micro-level processes may lead to growing segregation even when initial differences are small, as parents compare and navigate the network of schools close to their residential location, and school reputations mediate choices in local school markets. Our research has unearthed multiple mechanisms creating growing divides between schools, demonstrating that not even a relatively egalitarian educational system with high overall quality of schools is entirely shielded from segregation tendencies, which may lead to a decline in equality and greater risks of educational exclusion.

The knowledge economy is transforming our cities. The return of large companies’ headquarters to city centers and the proliferation of innovation districts in metropolises around the world represent a paradigm change. Today, scientific literature focuses on the metrics of innovative activity from the point of view of human capital and creative workers, global economic indicators, company characteristics, scientific production or urban implantation. However, there is a lack of research demonstrating that the knowledge economy has its own urban form that depends on the characteristics of the site – innovation activities are more likely to emerge in specific urban conditions. This paper aims to frame the emergence of innovative urban economy in an international context and describe a case study in the Barcelona metropolitan area, in line with the aforementioned hypothesis. Place matters in the leverage of innovation.

A US power generation company had 36 similar high heat rate gas turbines in two of their plants. These units were used for peaking power in a large metropolitan area. On two of these units in the early 1990’s they tried switching from lubricated, gear-type couplings to single, machined diaphragm-type couplings for reduction of maintenance and improved flexibility. The gear couplings also caused a great deal of vibrations during startup, and many times units were shut down because of excessive vibrations. Due to the extreme thermal growth of these applications, along with the stop-start nature of the application, the couplings were required to handle enormous amounts of misalignment. While the standard diaphragm couplings seemed like a good choice for the application because of their large misalignment capability, they proved to be unable to handle the excessive offset movements caused by thermal growth. The problem with the standard diaphragm was that it was too stiff or in other words, the spring rate was too high. In one case the coupling failed catastrophically very quickly under normal running conditions. In the mid 1990’s the power company tried a different, unique style of diaphragm couplings that used multiple diaphragms with holes in them. The diaphragms were made of thin, uniform thickness steel instead of the more common machined ‘profile’ diaphragms. Because of the holes, these new diaphragms provided much more misalignment capability, and they also had far lower spring rates than the previous diaphragm couplings. The lower spring rates caused an enormous reduction in reactionary forces from the coupling, and they also eliminated many vibration problems caused by the original gear couplings. The overall effect of this discovery was for the company to begin changing all similar units to this type of coupling. Now these 36 units which previously had severe vibration problems during startup, run very reliably. They have also eliminated the need for maintenance, which was an issue with the original gear couplings.

It is also true that the regulation of urban activities, including census and statistical information, requires a closer view of its citizens that can only be addressed from the municipal level. In any case, it is clear that the metropolitan delimitation has met useful but often ethereal or exclusionary criteria (economic or labor patterns, functional areas...), which become disfigured by an administrative reality that does not always correspond to the real metropolis. This paper, aware of the new cartographic possibilities linked to the big data - CORINE Land Cover, SIOSE, multi-sector digital atlases (in many cases referred to the urban extent, etc.) and other open system platforms - explores the evidence that might base a new objective methodology for the delimitation and planning of large urban areas. Indeed, what if basic data for cities would arise not from administrative entities but from independent outside approaches such as satellite imagery? What if every single sensing unit (every citizen, company, building or vehicle) directly issued relevant and dynamic information without going through the municipal collection? The Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), Portland Center, has been offering Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MfgET) and Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) undergraduate programs for students around the greater Portland Metropolitan area for the past ten (10) years. A Master’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MMfgET) is also offered. These programs are extensions of programs offered at OIT main Campus in Klamath Falls. Portland Campus programs are designed specifically to cater to students employed full-time in industry. This paper discusses engineering technology programs and their direct application in training local company fulltime employees to become engineers and managers. Most of these employees have associate degrees and years of experience in their respective companies. A discussion of engineering-related, hands-on work experience and understanding of engineering principles and their applications presented. The effectiveness of special instruction techniques, custom-developed for students with limited time availability, while maintaining ABET accreditations is also discussed. Discussion-oriented learning and teaching models and the impact of adding dimensions to these instructional models, with the industry-experienced students in mind, is emphasized. Case studies are presented to show improvement in student engagement, curiosity, and application of new knowledge to actual day-to-day, work-environment problems. Advantages and disadvantages of night school are discussed.

Management and disposal of municipal solid waste represents one of the major problems in metropolitan areas that must be properly handled in order to prevent environmental pollution. By disposing of its municial waste at the Vinča disposal site over the course of more than four decades, the City of Belgrade has formed the largest unsanitary landfill in Europe. Being compelled to urgently solve this complex problem, the City entered into a public-private partnership (PPP) with the company “Beo Čista Energija” to find a solution that would benefit both sides involved. The project of new integrated solid waste management in Vinča waste management complex is now in its final stage. The paper outlines the key project components, namely: closure, stabilization and remediation of the existing landfill, development of a new sanitary landfill for municipal waste disposal, new construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling facility and the industrial wastewater and leachate treatment system, including two combined heat and power (CHP) plants, one fueled by landfill gas and the other by municipal solid waste. The Project is certified by “Gold Standard” methodology, thereby verifying its contribution to the reduction of GHG emissions and the achievement of 7 out of 17 UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).

All through the last decade, the Brazilian pipeline industry has invested heavily in controlling long pipeline’s inventory, leak detection systems and in energy efficiency, the latter being object of study of this paper. A sensitive area to such investments can be perceived in the efforts made to control the energy supply to pumping stations. Nevertheless, one can clearly observe the weight of tradition pending over Brazilian projects resulting in a tendency toward the use of control valves as means of pump controlling. This solution is generally believed to be simpler, more reliable and less costly than the common alternatives. Still and all, as the Brazilian pipeline industry modernizes its facilities and procedures, particularly due to economic and environmental concerns, new strategies for traditional problems are considered and assessed in engineering projects. Throughout this paper, the authors assess one such project in which the engineering staff chose to apply a variable frequency drive (VFD) instead of the traditional process automated control valve. The company that operates the system made available the necessary process data and project parameters in order to conduct a thorough assessment both from the financial and the technical points of view. Hydraulic data as well as electrical motor parameters were made available to this research as well as a yearlong worth of process instrumentation data. Brazil has a long history investing and developing technology to replace gasoline for ethanol as automotive fuel. The pumps studied, located at the city of Ribeirão Preto, are responsible for pushing ethanol through a pipeline all the way to the Refinery of Paulínia, delivering fuel to be consumed in São Paulo’s metropolitan area, the most populated location in the country. As a basis of comparison, the authors estimated the capital and operational expenditure as well as the energy consumption of a fictional control valve system for the same pipeline and then put them against actual data made available by the company. As a conclusion, the paper brings to light that, although variable frequency drive systems indeed demand a higher capital expenditure, when the operational costs are considered, they can compensate that initial investment by presenting the facility with more energy efficient operation. Furthermore, after carefully assessing the provided data, the variable frequency drive seems to result in a more continuous and smooth operation maintaining a higher occupation rate of the pipeline. Suggestions are also proposed and assessed as a guide to further investments and operational procedure changes aiming at optimizing the company’s process.

Essex County Resource Recovery Facility (one of American Ref-Fuel Company’s six operating plants) has processing MSW capacity of approximately 2700 TPD and about 60% of this waste comes from NY City. Therefore, availability of the Essex plant boilers is very important not only for the company’s financial performance, it is also critical for the overall garbage disposal situation in the NYC Metropolitan area. One of the main factors affecting plant availability is boiler unscheduled downtime. The most recent data show that approximately 85% of Essex boilers unscheduled downtime is caused by tube failures, the majority of which occur in the superheater tubes. These tube failures are almost exclusively caused by fireside tube metal wastage driven by complicated mechanisms of corrosion in combination with local erosion. The corrosion is caused by chloride salts in the slag that deposits on the boiler tubes, coupled with high temperatures of flue gas going through the boiler. Corrosion rates are known to be very sensitive to flue gas temperature, tube metal temperature, heat flux, flow distribution. Erosion is typically caused by high velocities and flyash particle loading and trajectories. Extensive research revealed that in addition to this typical to WTE boiler corrosion/erosion mechanism, Essex boiler superheater tubes experienced a unique problem, resulting in tube overheating, accelerated wastage, and ultimate failure. In order to address this problem a modification plan was developed, which comprised several redesign options. A specially developed Three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (3-D CFD) model was utilized for comprehensive technical evaluation of the considered design options and for predicted performance simulations of the selected design at different operating conditions. The economical analysis, conducted in conjunction with the superheater redesign, provided financial justification for this project. The project has been recently executed, and field data collection is still in progress. Some preliminary data analyses have been performed. They have shown that the boiler performance after superheater modification is very close to the predicted target simulated by the CFD model. The plant and the company are already measuring financial benefits as a result of this project, the initial phase of which is presented in this paper.

La zona metropolitana de la Bahía de Banderas está compuesta por los municipios de Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco) y Bahía de Banderas (Nayarit) en México, destacando su vocación turística. La estructura urbana se compone de dos modelos contrastantes: en Bahía de Banderas es mayoritariamente difuso al ubicarse en una planicie mientras que en Puerto Vallarta es más compacto por su localización en las estribaciones de la sierra. La integración funcional se eslabona a través del litoral costero y las vialidades que conectan los diferentes nodos del sistema. Las mejores condiciones de vida se localizan en el espacio turístico diluyéndose los beneficios en el centro y periferias de las ciudades. Con ello se vislumbra la pertinencia de implementar políticas urbanas de alcance metropolitano que consideren las características de esta estructura urbana dual

La Ciudad de Cholula representa un ejemplo icónico del desarrollo periurbano en México de ciudades medias inmersas en un entorno metropolitano. La particular heterogeneidad de Cholula como región sagrada, estudiantil y de servicios, se ha ido conformando a través de tres tipos de modelo socio-territorial: el compacto, el rural y el metropolitano; estos modelos se integran a través de diferentes patrones de uso de suelo. La transformación urbana de Cholula se originó en territorio ejidal, donde su expropiación en la década de 1990 y la implementación del Programa de Desarrollo Regional Angelópolis generaron diversos detonadores peri-urbanos, como cambios en las dinámicas poblacionales, especulación inmobiliaria, dispersión de localidades, abandono de las actividades agrícolas y consumo desmedido del territorio. Estos detonadores generaron cambios en los patrones de uso de suelo que van desde los núcleos urbanos compactos hasta las localidades rurales dispersas a las nuevas centralidades urbanas. The City of Cholula represents an iconic example of peri-urban development in Mexican middle-size cities. Cholula has a particular heterogeneity as a sacred, student, and services region. Its context is being developed through three socio-spatial models: the compact, the rural, and the metropolitan; each integrated with patterns of land use. The urban transformation of Cholula began in 1990 with the expropriation of ejido and agricultural land and the implementation of the Regional Development Plan Angelópolis. All of these triggered peri-urbanization development, like changes in populations’ dynamics, real estate speculation, urban sprawl, abandon of agricultural activities, and a wasteful consumption of land. These facts generated changes in the patterns of land use, from compact-urban cores, sprawl rural localities, to new urban centralities.

El conocimiento de las características y patrones de desplazamiento de las personas en las ciudades es un insumo clave para la definición de políticas públicas de movilidad urbana, especialmente en las grandes áreas metropolitanas. Desafortunadamente, es baja la disponibilidad de datos actualizados y confiables en muchas de las ciudades de América Latina y el Caribe (ALC), y su generación por métodos de estudio tradicionales requieren grandes esfuerzos por parte de los gobiernos locales para su recolección y procesamiento. Por este motivo, investigar nuevas fuentes de información que aprovechen los datos masivos generados por aplicaciones de dispositivos móviles se convierte en un objetivo clave para resolver esta problemática. El Observatorio de Movilidad Urbana de América Latina (OMU) busca dar respuesta esta necesidad de información sólida, confiable y actualizada sobre el transporte y la movilidad urbana en la región. En este trabajo se utilizaron bases de datos de la aplicación Facebook, obtenidos a través del programa Data for Good en colaboración con el Development Data Partnership y el Departamento de Transporte de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, para elaborar una metodología que genere matrices origen-destino en las grandes áreas metropolitanas de ALC que forman parte del OMU. Estas matrices representan los desplazamientos que realiza la población entre sus residencias y las actividades principales (trabajo, estudio, etc.) durante las horas de la mañana en abril-mayo del año 2022. Además, se realizó un análisis detallado de los resultados obtenidos en la Región Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (RMBA). Se estudió la relación entre las distancias de desplazamiento y variables geográficas y socioeconómicas de la metrópolis, y se comparó los resultados obtenidos con otros datos y estudios disponibles.

This paper addresses the following general questions: What kind of consumption patterns (e.g., land, carbon footprint, traveling) are generated by the more compact and traditional structure of Curitiba vis-à-vis the modernist urban sprawl of Brasilia?; What kind of urban and transport policies and actions can help these cities to become less resource and carbon intensive?; and, what can city or metropolitan governments do to help cities achieve these goals? The paper will show how the carbon footprints of Curitiba and Brasilia - in regard to land use distribution and transportation - are reflected in their motorized and fuel consumption rates and will suggest what can be done in policy terms to improve the cities' performances in terms of carbon and resource efficiency. The central premise is that the shape of a city affects its energy patterns, and that there is a relationship between its urban form, block structure, size, density, and land use with its travel behavior, split transportation modes, and carbon footprint. This paper was presented at the 45th ISOCARP International Congress held in Porto, Portugal on October 18th-22nd, 2009.

Se denominan servicios ferroviarios de pasajeros suburbanos a los que se prestan entre el centro de una ciudad cabecera mediana a grande y sus suburbios y otras ciudades cercanas, movilizando volúmenes muy importantes de pasajeros que en general viajan diariamente en servicios que tienen menos de 100 km entre estaciones extremas. Son siete los países de la región que cuentan con servicios ferroviarios de pasajeros suburbanos: Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Costa Rica, México, Uruguay y Venezuela. De ellos, resultan relevantes en el desempeño de cinco de las grandes áreas metropolitanas de América Latina: San Pablo, Río de Janeiro y Belo Horizonte en Brasil; Buenos Aires en Argentina; y Ciudad de México (CDMX) en ese país. En otras 14 ciudades de la región (de Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Costa Rica y Venezuela) poseen un rol menor pero también realizan aportes a la calidad de vida y la reducción de la congestión. Por sus efectos positivos en cuanto a la reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, el transporte ferroviario de pasajeros es fundamental para apoyar la descarbonización del sector, contribuyendo así a la mitigación del Cambio Climático, uno de los pilares fundamentales de la Visión 2025 del BID: Reinvertir en las Américas. En sólo tres ciudades de la región los servicios se prestan mediante verdaderas redes ferroviarias, con múltiples líneas accediendo a diversas zonas de sus respectivas áreas metropolitanas: en San Pablo y Río de Janeiro en Brasil, y en Buenos Aires en Argentina. En las restantes, se trata de sistemas que tienen hasta dos líneas con menos de 100 kilómetros de extensión total. Aun así, en alguno de estos casos poseen relevancia en el movimiento de los pasajeros de sus respetivas áreas de influencia directa: son los casos de Belo Horizonte en Brasil y CDMX; en un nivel menor, los de Santiago y Valparaíso, ambos en Chile. Todos los datos acerca de los indicadores y benchmarks que se presentan en este documento se encuentran contenidos en la “Base de datos de ferrocarriles suburbanos en América Latina”. Se obtuvieron 56 indicadores y benchmarks para cada servicio, agrupados en 11 grandes temáticas. De estos, en este documento se revisa y compara los 14 índices más relevantes y que aportan información estratégica sobre los servicios y las empresas. Esa información permite, por un lado, entender la dimensión y características del nivel de actividad de cada uno de ellos, y por otro, mediante los benchmarks conocer la eficiencia operativa-financiera de su desempeño al compararlos con sus ferrocarriles pares (“peers”). Cabe mencionar que el documento no busca calificar ni valorizar ni juzgar mejores o peores desempeños empresariales, sino explicitarlos. Con el objetivo de hacer más comparables y graficables los indicadores y benchmarks, los distintos operadores fueron agrupados en función de la demanda anual que trasladaron en 2018.
