Abstract Explosives have the greatest importance in human practical activities, not only at time of war, but at tranquility as well. Nowadays, huge amount different type of explosives is synthesized, and fabricated for military and civilian applications. Nevertheless, this fact doesn’t exclude necessity of synthesis of new explosives for optimization of their characteristics, such as prime cost, power, safety during production, storage, transfer and etc. Picric acid is a fairly strong and energetic explosive, at the same time, beside to its explosive properties, it is characterized with antibacterial nature and it is the best yellow dye, especially for dyeing animal and plant tissues. The synthesis of picric acid structural analogues, is the main purpose of the research. One of the reasons of synthesis picric acid and further preparation of its structural analogues is safe nature of substances of this group, which makes them safe to various manipulations. On the other hand, it is well known that the synthesis and production of explosives is classified as high risk and costly technology. Therefore, even a small increase of their production productivity, is interesting from the economic effect point of view. During an investigation, changing of reaction conditions (temperature, concentrations and dosage of reagents) the improved method for syntheses of picric acid was developed. As result the significant increase of practical yield of picric acid, from 46% to 86% was achieved. Synthesized picric acid was placed in steel tube and tested on initiation of detonation in explosive camera. The description of modified method, comparisons to conventional technology, as well as explosion testing results is described in the paper.

Tandem methodology for heterocyclic synthesis represents a powerful approach for the rapid buildup of molecular complexity from potentially simple starting materials. Work from our laboratory has shown that the rhodium(II)-catalyzed cyclization cascade of alpha-diazo imides represents an effective method for the synthesis of a variety of heterocyclic systems. As an extension of these studies, we became interested in using a linked Pummerer/N-acyliminium ion cyclization sequence since we felt that this combination offers unique opportunities for the assemblage of complex target molecules. A synthetic method that combines transformations of different reaction types significantly broadens the scope of such procedures in synthetic chemistry. Alpha-thiocarbocations generated from the Pummerer reaction of beta-phenylsulfinylmethyl-alpha, beta-unsaturated amides can be intercepted by the adjacent amido group to produce transient amino-substituted furans which undergo subsequent Diels–Alder cycloadditions. Using this domino amido Pummerer/Diels–Alder cascade, we were able to assemble novel polycyclic systems in a single operation. The key step in the process involves the generation of a reactive N-acyliminium ion by fragmentation of an amino-substituted [4+2]-cycloadduct. The successful synthesis of a number of alkaloids by this sequence of reactions reveals the usefulness and importance of this unique domino cascade. Application of the process for the preparation of the stenoma alkaloid stenine was recently carried out in our laboratory.

A number of groups have been investigated as potential protecting groups for the thiol functionality of cysteine residues during Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis. Of these the 4-picolyl system has been found to be successful. A short, efficient synthesis to the protected amino acid and mild cleavage conditions have been developed. This protected amino acid has been applied in the synthesis of a number of interesting cysteine-containing peptide targets. Deglycosylated human erythropoietin (dhEPO) has been synthesised by SPPS, employing the picolyl group for cysteine protection. Purification of this material has been achieved by gel filtration. The synthetic material has been characterised by amino acid analysis, SDS-PAGE, iso-electric focusing and N-terminal sequencing. Attempts have been made to synthesise deglycosylated human erythropoietin via a fragment coupling technique. All fragments were successfully synthesised and purified and model ligation studies carried out.

RNA is recognised as an important biomolecule involved in many broad cellular functions such as transcription, translation regulation and protein synthesis. Most pathogenic viruses replicate their genome as RNA during some stages in their life cycle. There is an urgent need to develop new methods to treat numerous viral diseases by targeting RNA and to understand the processes by which RNA-protein complexation can be inhibited. Our study focuses on the interactions between the HIV-1 Rev Responsive Element RNA (RRE) with a series of aminoglycosides developed jointly between our group in Manchester and GSK (USA). Even though a number of novel aminoglycoside have been explored previously, they are complex, large molecular weight compounds with low specificity, which limits their use as RNA recognition ligands and anti-viral drugs. The key problem is to be able to synthesise precursors by short, direct routes, avoiding significant detours caused by traditional carbohydrate protecting group strategies, while still delivering sterocontrol and opportunities to diversify. In chapter II we describe our efforts to synthesize the 6-glucosamine moiety (A-ring). A flexible synthesis of 6-aminoglucosamine derivatives can be accomplished in 5 steps using a totally regioselective enzymatic hydrolysis, controlled oxidation to sensitive but manageable aldehydes (hitherto rarely accomplished with a C-4 OAc), and reductive amination technology that allow for unprecedented diversification. In a different approach stereocontrolled synthesis of a model compound was achieved in 4 steps including a novel TEMPO oxidation and a one-pot oxidation/imine-reduction for the complete synthesis of the molecule.Chapter III describes our attempts towards the development of a robust stereoselective O-glycosylation strategy using Lewis acids. In pursuance of an efficient synthesis of our designed RNA binder target compound the stereoselective formation of the glycosidic linkage connecting the A-ring with the 2-DOS ring is an important step. This chapter also gives a general overview of the challenges involved in glycosylation followed by the strategies we employed to overcome some of these issues. We discuss our unusual stereocontrolled glycosylation in which, despite a neighbouring “participatory” group at C-2, the α-glycoside is delivered in high yield. This result implies that the reaction does not occur through a conventional neighbouring group participation.

The synthesis of heterocycles using radical intermediates has become an important area of research in recent years. The aim of our research was to develop radical methodologies to construct heterocycles on solid-support. Tri-cyclic benzimidazole derivatives are desirable synthetic targets with a range of biological activity and are part of certain anti-tumour agents. Solid-supported radical reactions with substituted benzimidazoles were performed under different experimental conditions, including different solvents, three different resins (Wang, Merrifield and Rink) and different radical reagents. 4-Mercaptobenzoic acid moiety served as a traceless linker in radical ipso-substitution reactions of benzimidazole precursors attached to solid-support to construct tri-cyclic and tetracyclic benzimidazole adducts. The solution-phase radical ipso-substitution protocol was quite successfully translated onto solid-support.

Abstract A generalized accuracy performance synthesis methodology for planar closed chain mechanisms is proposed. The relationship between the sensitivity to variations of link lengths and the location of the moving pivots of four-link mechanisms is investigated for the particular objective of three and four position synthesis. In the three design positions case, sensitivity maps with isosensitivity curves plotted in the design solution space allow the designer to synthesize a planar mechanism with desired sensitivity value or to optimize sensitivity from a set of acceptable design solutions. In the case of four design positions, segments of the Burmester design curves that exhibit specified sensitivity to link length tolerance are identified. A performance sensitivity criterion is used as a convenient and a useful way of discriminating between many possible solutions to a given synthesis problem.

Abstract Design efficiency and robustness at early stage of parametric engineering design play a critical role in reducing cycle time and improving product quality in the overall product development process. Usually, the “forward mapping” approach, is used to find designs, where the desirable performances are satisfied through large iterations of analysis and evaluation from design space to performance space. However, these approaches are time-consuming and involve blind search if the engineering system simulation models and/or initial conditions are not appropriately selected. On the other hand, common “reverse engineering” methods use domain-specific assumptions and are not effective in generic scenarios where the presumed conditions are violated. In this paper, a Backward Mapping Methodology for Design Synthesis (BMDS) is presented that can help conduct design synthesis rapidly and robustly at early stage of parametric engineering design. BMDS is a surrogate model-based approach that combines the strengths of metamodeling and statistics. It can help designers explicitly identify the robust design solutions that satisfy the designer-specified performance requirements through a “backward mapping” from the performance space directly to the design space. Preliminary case studies show its effectiveness and potential to be used as a generic early stage parametric design synthesis methodology in the future.

High reflectance materials constitute an attractive idea to reduce cooling loads, which is crucial for attaining the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings goal, also presenting the benefit of broadening the range of colours applicable in building facades. The EnReflect project intended to re-design envelope systems by increasing their solar reflectance through nanotechnology. The main idea was to produce novel nanomaterial-based coatings with high near-infrared (NIR) reflectance by tuning their optical properties and testing their compatibility with typical insulation technologies such as ETICS. As such, this project focused on the synthesis of nanoparticles with improved NIR reflectance, the evaluation of the hygrothermal-mechanical behaviour of thermal insulation systems with the application of the improved coating solutions, the characterization of the more relevant material properties and the durability assessment. One of the main achievements was the development of a facile synthesis of a nanocomposite with improved performance in the NIR region that allowed the reflectance improvement of a dark-finishing coating. Also, the incorporation of such nanoparticles had a positive effect on keeping their optical properties after accelerated ageing cycles. The development of numerical simulations allowed the estimation of the maximum surface temperature in Mediterranean climates under different optical parameters. The study of the hygrothermal behaviour of thermal enhanced façades led to the development of a new durability assessment methodology which contributed to closing a standardization gap.

Target. Currently, the development of professional values and official behavior of civil servants are relevant for training personnel for the public authority system. One of the ways to form the personality of a civil servant who is a professional is to increase the real level of his social responsibility. The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of social responsibility of civil servants. Method or methodology of the work. The systematic, activity-based and axiological approaches were used as methodological principles in the work. The research methods were analysis and synthesis, movement from the general to the particular, comparison and analogy, movement from the abstract to the concrete, complex generalization and classification. Results. The main results of the study include the concretization of the concept of «social responsibility of civil servants», the identification of the essential properties of social responsibility, the determination of the features of its functioning, the formulation of urgent problems for further research in this aspect. Scope of the results. The scientific results of the article can be applied when conducting psychological and pedagogical research and organizing classes in educational institutions of higher education.

Research methodology. The following methods were used in this research: general scientific methods (descriptive, analysis, synthesis, comparison) and special (structural, hermeneutic, narrative, method of content analysis). We identified words related to the concept of the enemy and determined the context in which they are used by the authors of the collections Results. The formats of reflection of military reality in collections of military documentaries are investigated. It is emphasized that the authors-observers of events as professional communicators form a vision of events based on categories understandable to the audience – «own» and «others». Instead, the authors-participants go events have more creative space and pay more attention to their own emotional state and reflections. It is defined how the enemy is depicted and what place he occupies in the military reality represented by the authors. It is emphasized that the authors reflect the enemy in different ways. In particular, the authors-observers of the events tried to form a comprehensive vision of the events, and therefore paid much attention to the opposite side of the military conflict. Authors-participants of the events tend to show the enemy as a mass to be opposed. In such collections, the enemy is specified only in the presence of evidence confirming the presence of Russians or militants. Novelty. The research for the first time investigates the methods of representation of mi­litary activity in the collections of Ukrainian military documentaries. The article is devoted to the analysis of how the authors represent the enemy. Practical importance. The analysis of collections of military documentaries will allow to study the phenomenon of war and to trace the peculiarities of the authors’ representation of military reality.

The subject of the study is the ideological, financial, economic and socio-social conditions of the publishing house and the editorial board of the magazine “New Pathway” Winnipeg period 1941-1977. The main objectives is to determine the peculiarities of the conditions of publishing a Ukrainian magazine in exile, which provides for the systematization and introduction into scientific circulation of factual material on creative and material activities of the “New Pathway” and socio-political environment that influenced the information and ideological and business policy of the publication. The basis of the research methodology is axiological, cultural, systemic approaches; methods of historicism, analysis, synthesis, generalization were used. The study provides not only a description of the historical path of the publication in this period, but also the reasons for miscalculations and successes, both financial and economic and socio-political, which allowed not only to stay in the information field and market for more than ninety years, technical circumstances of its existence, the political struggle in the new wave of emigration after World War II, changes in demographic and linguistic situation among the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. The reasons for the situational increase and decrease in the activity of the publication’s subscribers were identified; the mechanisms of expanding the readership, attracting new readers and authors are analyzed; confirmed that the efforts of editors and directors of the publishing house at the initial stage of the Winnipeg period created and strengthened the material and technical base of the publishing house, conducted advertising campaigns and direct work to attract new subscribers and readers; The significance of the study is that for the first time in Ukraine the information about the Winnipeg period of the Ukrainian-Canadian weekly “New Pathway”, its financial and financial problems and creative and editorial successes was analyzed and summarized, thus filling another page in the history of Ukrainian diaspora periodicals.

The quantification of storm surge is vital for flood hazard assessment in communities affected by coastal storms. The astronomical tide is an integral component of the total still water level needed for accurate storm surge estimates. Coastal hazard analysis methods, such as the Coastal Hazards System and the StormSim Coastal Hazards Rapid Prediction System, require thousands of hydrodynamic and wave simulations that are computationally expensive. In some regions, the inclusion of astronomical tides is neglected in the hydrodynamics and tides are instead incorporated within the probabilistic framework. There is a need for a rapid, reliable, and accurate tide prediction methodology to provide spatially dense reconstructed or predicted tidal time series for historical, synthetic, and forecasted hurricane scenarios. A methodology is proposed to combine the tidal harmonic information from the spatially dense Advanced Circulation hydrodynamic model tidal database with a rapid tidal reconstruction and prediction program. In this study, the Unified Tidal Analysis program was paired with results from the tidal database. This methodology will produce reconstructed (i.e., historical) and predicted tidal heights for coastal locations along the United States eastern seaboard and beyond and will contribute to the determination of accurate still water levels in coastal hazard analysis methods.

The article analyzes the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallachi and her journalistic work during 2017-2020. The actual media image of the figure of Fallachi is highlighted, examples of positive and negative statements are given. It is substantiated why her journalism should be researched in various ways, taking into account other aspects of her work that are not related to Islamophobia. The subject of the study is critical texts in modern foreign media dedicated to the author’s work. The objective of the study is to outline the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallaci and her journalism during 2017-2020. The methodology. The following methods have been used in the process of scientific research: historical, comparative, systems analysis, content synthesis, and others. The main results. In total, we have analyzed eight materials in foreign publications, published over the past 3 years, as well as the two most famous biographies of Oriana Fallaci. Some of the most recent reviewed texts have been published in the last few months, reflecting the interest in the author’s journalism, her writing, and reporting. Therefore, we see the need for further tracking and analysis of this body of texts. Conclusions. Critics of Fallaci express polar views that are not all negative. Authors re­commend quite cautiously her texts for reading, emphasizing their positive aspects. Both Fallaci’s biographies are also not entirely complementary: some aspects of her work are glorified, others are condemned. We managed to find general tendencies in the criticism of Oriana Fallaci’s journalism. These include accusations of xenophobia and Islamophobia, uncompromisingness, lack of political correctness, and moral value. The authors emphasize, at the same time, the openness and directness that bribe the reader, patriotism and honesty, strength of spirit and firmness of position. Significance of the research. The analysis of the latest criticism reveals what kind of media image Fallachi’s figure has today, and gives the possibility to research it for demonization and one-sided coverage. This is important not only for thorough research of the author’s work but also for understanding how the modern world perceives journalism, which is contrary to the generally accepted principles of political correctness, journalistic ethics, and humanity.

Following preliminary observations by one of the collaborating scientists on this project and the completion of a 1-year, BARD-supported feasibility study (IS-1908-90F), this 3-year BARD project has been executed. The main objectives of the research were to elucidate biochemical and pathological aspects of UV-induced resistance in fruits and vegetables, to characterize physical and biological variables of induced resistance and delay of ripening, and to explore the application of the treatment as a control practice of postharvest diseases and shelf-life extension of fruits and vegetables. Our findings, which are detailed in numerous joint publications, have shown that the effect of UV-C light on induction of resistance and delay of ripening is a general one and of wide oddurrence. Apart from surface sterilization of the commodity, the reduction of decay of different fungi has been associated with and induced resistance phenomenon which gradually builds up within 24 to 48 hours after the UV treatment and can be reversed by visible light. In citrus, induced resistance has been associated with increased activity of the enzymes phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and peroxidase, and with the levels of endglucanase and chitinase. In tomato, resistance was correlated with the production of high levels of tomatine. Our study of some molecular aspects of the induced resistance in grapefruit has revealed the induction of a cDNA which represents a gene encoding for an isoflavone reductase-like protein that, in legumes, has been associated with phytoalexin biosynthesis. This gene was cloned and sequenced. Delay of ripening was associated in tomato with inhibition of ethylene production, carotenoid synthesis, and chlorophyll degradation and with the presence of high levels of polyamines. In peach fruit epiphytic populations of a yeast increased following the UV treatment. Pilot-size treatment and packing lines were constructed in the US and Israel to test the application of the UV treatment on a semi-commercial scale. Although effective in reduction of decay and delay of ripening, a number of problems will have to be addressed before practical application of this methodology can be realized. The main issues are associated with the temporal and variable response to the treatment, and its relationship to the maturity and date of harvest of the commodity.
