The object of the article is to present the results of research aimed at identifying data on memorial information resources about Siberians – the participants of the Great Patriotic War and serving on the home front. Basing on studying Websites containing full texts of documents of personal origin (ego documents), that reflect the fates of Siberians during the Great Patriotic War, the activities of Siberian organizations (archives, museums, etc.) on the study of ego documents and their introduction into scientific and public circulation are presented,The paper provides a brief overview of publications on the study of various aspects of memorial practices in the electronic environment and shows the interpretation of the concept of “ego documents” by different authors.In the course of work there were examined 63 sites containing memorial information resources: the websites of the Ministry of Defense, State museums and archives of Siberia and the Far East, as well as other organizations. 19 sites containing ego documents were identified, their search capabilities studied, the characteristics of ego documents given according to several parameters (types, quantity, content, etc.).The revealed websites containing significant arrays of ego documents are: “Pis’ma Pobedy” (“Letters of the Victory”), “Prozhito” (“It’s lived through”), “Ya pomnyu” (“I remember”), etc. There are also sites that contain memories of the front-line soldiers and home front workers’ relatives and friends, sharing stories about them: “Pamyat’ naroda” (“Memory of the People”) and “Bessmertnyi polk” (“Immortal Regiment”). On some sites ego documents are presented in the form of collections (the Museum of History and Ethnography of the KhMAO-Yugra, the State Archive of Kuzbass, etc.).There is a number of shortcomings hampering the study of ego documents on some sites (lack of printed deciphering of scan copies of letters, advanced search function, etc.). The authors conclude that a number of All-Russian and regional Internet resources contain significant volumes of ego documents reflecting the events of the Great Patriotic War, which provide good opportunities for the research work of historians and local history scientists.

The work of Santiago Calatrava is characterized by biomorphic imitation combined with engineering thought, an approach that has made him one of the foremost and renowned architects of contemporary times. The architect employed principles of symbolic imitation and historical resonance. The main form, in this project, for imitation was taken from the icon of the Virgin Mary with a Child, which the architect skillfully transformed into the silhouette of a church, while the idea of geometric analysis of the Virgin's Face with a halo inspired the creation of the plan. The principle of historical resonance is ubiquitous in the project, from the orientation of the church and adherence to liturgical traditions to the incorporation of distinctive elements from existing cultic objects of Byzantine sacred architecture. On the other hand, the architect did not overlook modern challenges and needs. By utilizing advanced technologies and creativity, the author and his studio adeptly use light to emphasize important elements of the structure in the interior and create a unique appearance of the church from the outside during the dark hours of the day. Indeed, the illumination of the church at night is another idea of imitating the church candle as a symbol of God's presence. Functionally, the church is equipped not only with liturgical spaces but also with areas that will serve the community and as a memorial to the tragedy of September 11. These volumes are harmoniously integrated by the western façade and have important visual connections with the Park of Freedom and the memorial complex itself. St. Nicholas Church in New York should be singled out as a successful example of the symbiosis of tradition, modern technologies, and the author's creative approach.

Background:Deposition of uric acid crystals cause an inflammatory reaction, which can lead to structural bone changes, if such deposits form adjacent to cortical bone [1, 2]. Both erosions and bony spurs can form in conjunction with tophus deposition. The exact spatial inter-relation between tophi and structural bone lesions in humans in vivo is not fully characterized.Objectives:To spatially relate structural bone changes (erosions, osteophytes) to the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP1) joint in patients with tophaceous gout.Methods:Tophaceous gout patients with clinically detected tophi at the MTP1 joint underwent simultaneous dual energy computed tomography (DECT) and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) of the feet. Tophi detected by DECT and erosions and osteophytes detected by HR-pQCT were overlayed to define their exact anatomical relation. Furthermore, feet of sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HC) were scanned to define the normal architecture of the MTP1 joint.Results:Gout patients (N=20) had significantly higher numbers (5 (0–17 vs. 1 (1– 2)) and volumes (45.32 mm3(7.26–550.32) vs. 0.82 mm3(0.15–21.8)) of bone erosions as well as significantly higher numbers (10.5 (0-26) vs. 1 (0-10)) and sizes of osteophytes (4.93 mm (0.77-7.19 mm vs. 0.93 mm (0.05-7.61 mm))than healthy controls (N=20). Erosions were in direct spatial relation to bone erosions, while osteophytic responses were more widespread and affected bone regions on the MTP1, which were not directly adjacent to tophi. Median tophus volume detected by DECT (0.12 mm3(0.01–2.53)) was associated with the total volume of erosions (r=0.597, p=0.005).Conclusion:This study demonstrates that bone changes in gout are substantial and not only include erosions but also widespread architectural bone remodeling associated osteophyte formation. Thomas Hardy noted regretfully: “Few literary critics discern the solidarity of all the arts” (Florence Hardy 300). An architect self-educated in art history by visits to London museums, an avid reader of John Ruskin, keenly alive to music and responsive to the ornamental sculpture and painting of Gothic buildings, Hardy believed in a composite muse. After ceasing to write novels, in which he had included numerous painterly allusions and references to specific art works, he overtly probed the image/text relation in his 1898 debut volume of poetry: Wessex Poems and Other Verses, by Thomas Hardy, with 30 Illustrations by the Author. Although a reading experience dependent upon the original aesthetic interplay that Hardy had designed was destroyed in most subsequent printings, the first edition's partnership of image and text remains absolutely central to the book's multiple meanings. Indeed, Hardy's images and words should be regarded as inseparable, since they interact in what W. J. T. Mitchell has called a “composite art form” (83, 89).

The subject of the study is the methods of complex research that precede repair and restoration work in the necropolis of the Donskoy Monastery in Moscow and in the necropolis of the XVIII century Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. Historical – archival and bibliographic studies, field studies, studies on volume parameters and special engineering and technological studies are considered as integral stages of an integrated approach. The author also examines in detail the historical aspect of the formation of objects and the current physical condition of monuments. The purpose of the work is the historical and architectural formation and preservation of necropolis complexes in the process of complex repair and restoration work. For the first time, the article provides a comprehensive overview of scientific types of research on memorial sculpture objects, architectural and artistic tombstones based on project documentation. The conclusion is formulated that comprehensive scientific research should be strictly mandatory in full, and not selective. This approach will allow not only to preserve the objects of memorial sculpture, but also to restore them in historical form using the most authentic materials and technologies. It is also emphasized that historical necropolises are full-fledged objects of historical research, the study of which is important not only in itself, but also as part of the history of art and the history of urban planning. The necessity of further study of the stated topic with a more in-depth study of the introduction of mandatory permanent monitoring of the state of preservation of monuments of necropolises to prevent further intensive destruction of unique monuments of memorial art was noted.

The author formulates major components of Russian national identity that form the basis for a civic nation-building project. These are the study and preservation of historic and cultural legacies including archival and archeological heritage, historic and cultural monuments, memorial sites, historic sites, and landscapes. In addition to active projects, the author suggests novel projects: the construction of a big-data corpus for Russian and other languages spoken in the country, academic dictionaries and encyclopedias, complete works of classic Russian literature, and a multi-volume history of Russia. Social-science expertise is needed for infrastructure and development projects and the construction of mass residential buildings and transport facilities to ensure the preservation of common milieus and values that make up a national identity.

O uso de veículos aéreos não tripulados (VANT), popularmente conhecidos por drones, têm sido utilizados com frequência em diversos setores, como segurança pública, fiscalização ambiental, pesquisa, agricultura e no monitoramento de ambientes naturais diversos. O monitoramento da dinâmica sedimentar de duas porções distintas da Praia de Navegantes (SC), Brasil – a porção Sul, em processo de recuperação há dez anos, e um trecho da porção Norte, Praia do Gravatá, em avançado processo de degradação – foi realizado entre os meses de abril e julho de 2019 com a utilização de um VANT. Foram realizados seis sobrevoos em cada um dos locais estudados. A aerofotogrametria desses locais foi realizada a uma altura pré-definida de 100 metros, tendo sido registrada por meio de memorial de processamento com a sobreposição lateral de 65% e frontal de 75% entre as imagens obtidas. As imagens de cada levantamento foram tratadas no software Agisoft PhotoScan com aplicação de pontos de apoio materializados em solo georreferenciados com emprego de aparelho GPS/GNSS, marca Geomax, Modelo Zenith 25, na qual os mesmos (pontos) foram pós-processados com base na Rede Brasileira de Monitoramento Contínuo (RBMC) do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Foram geradas ortofotos georreferenciadas, imagens 3D com geração de curvas de nível com intervalos de 0,25 m, o que possibilitou calcular os volumes de sedimentos erodidos ou acrescidos. O método proposto demanda ainda de alguns ajustes e aprimoramento, mas demonstrou grande eficácia no monitoramento do processo de dinâmica sedimentar nos locais estudados.

Volume Holographic Data Storage Systems (HDSS) has been of interest for almost seven decades, and are now considered as a viable option for Write Once Read Many (WORM) cold data storage applications. Thanks to the Bragg selectivity of thick volume holograms, HDSS stores several hundreds of holograms on top of each other, called multiplexed data pages, by which data recording density can be substantially increased compared to surface recordings. On the other hand, signal intensity upon reconstruction of such multiplexed data pages inversely scales with number of multiplexing squared. Therefore, longer detection time and/or a high power laser along with a large dynamic range material is needed to make HDSS a truly viable "fast and high density" option for WORM applications. Historically, the trade-off between data density and data rate is well recognized. The challenge has been partially solved by continuous efforts such as improvement of materials, optical architectures, opto-mechanical systems and signal processing [1,2]. In this dissertation, we provide an additional pathway for HDSS to further increase both data density and transfer rates which is Cavities Enhancement Techniques for HDSS, to overcome the fundamental tradeoff. Key ideas are: recycling light with cavity to enhance data rate, and increasing number of multiplexing by combining cavity-eigenmode multiplexing, a subset of orthogonal phasecode multiplexing, with angular multiplexing. Based on this idea, we design and demonstrate Cavity-enhanced HDSS in such a way that we increase data rate and/or data density by at least factor of 2 while taking advantage of previous improvements as they are, or only with the minimum amount of modifications. In Section 1, we review history of HDSS and summarize the latest research results of HDSS and requirements on modern optical data storage systems as they relate to our solutions. In Section 2, theory of volume holography is reviewed by emphasizing understanding of angular and orthogonal phase code multiplexing. In Section 3 the theory of cavity enhanced reference arms is presented. We discuss how cavities provide a coherent boost to the beam power, which can be used in recording to alleviate source power requirements and/or increase the data recording rate and demonstrate the enhancement experimentally. Beyond basic enhancement, cavities also enable orthogonal phase code multiplexing via cavity eigenmodes. In Section 4, we experimentally demonstrate angular and orthogonal phase code hybrid multiplexing to overcome the limitation of the maximum number of multiplexing imposed by the geometrical constraints of angular multiplexing. In Section 5, novel aspects of the research are discussed in conjunction with the application of the technology for commercial use. Conclusions and future research direction are addressed in Section 6.

This thesis considers the optical storage and processing of data using volume holography. First, cross-talk noise due to geometrical considerations is calculated for volume holographic memories. Cross-talk is due to energy diffracted from non-Bragg matched gratings. The SNR (signal-to-noise-ratio) of holographic memories due to cross-talk noise is calculated for Fourier transform holograms stored by angle, wavelength, phase-coded, and rotational multiplexing methods. Considerations include page size, geometry, angular bandwidth of the optical system, wavelength of the light used, material size, spatial light modulator (SLM) contrast, and the phase of the image plane. The SNR for angle multiplexed image plane holograms is also calculated and compared to the results for Fourier transformed angle multiplexed holograms. A comparison of the various multiplexing methods based on cross-talk is presented, and then the effect of geometry and material dynamic range is included to determine when cross-talk will be the dominant noise source. The use of photopolymers as a holographic element is then presented. The recording characteristics of the DuPont photopolymer are described and a method of multiplexing multiple holograms in the photopolymer is given. A new method for multiplexing holograms (called peristrophic multiplexing) is described. This method significantly increases the storage capacity of thin films. After this, a 3-D disk-based correlator and storage device using the photopolymer is described and demonstrated. In this device, holograms are multiplexed at a given spot and then disk rotation/head motion are used to access multiple spots on the disk. Theoretical correlation speed, read-out rates, and the storage capacity of the 3-D disk as limited by geometry and laser power are given.

Figures of mobility appear prominently in US-foundational narratives of ‘discovery,’ the ‘Puritan errand,’ and westward expansion; the protagonists of these hegemonic tales of settlement and nation-building are (mostly) European travellers, pioneers, and colonists. By contrast, figures such as pirates, drifters, and fugitives are for the most part absent from canonical narratives of new world beginnings and may be considered as expressing/representing alternative mobilities. Their stories and their representations raise questions of legitimacy and legality – often from a transnational perspective – and imply a critique of the American empire and its concomitant domestic discourses of marginalization. Yet, pirates, drifters, and fugitives also appear as ambiguous figures with regard to US-exceptionalist rhetoric: they may tap their subversive potential, while they are also bound to and complicit with the ideologies they seek to expose. In the context of the so-called New American Studies and the emergent field of Mobility Studies, this volume investigates these figures in a variety of cultural productions (pamphlets, song lyrics, autobiographies, novels, memorials, legal texts, video, television, and film) from the 17th century to the present.

Although the reconciliation of Jewish and Polish memories of the Holocaust is the central issue in contemporary Polish–Jewish relations, this is the first attempt to examine these divisive memories in a comprehensive way. Until 1989, Polish consciousness of the Second World War subsumed the destruction of Polish Jewry within a communist narrative of Polish martyrdom and heroism. Post-war Jewish memory, by contrast, has been concerned mostly with Jewish martyrdom and heroism. Since the 1980s, however, a significant number of Jews and Poles have sought to identify a common ground and have met with partial but increasing success, notwithstanding the new debates that have emerged in recent years concerning Polish behaviour during the Nazi genocide of the Jews that Poles had ignored for half a century. This volume considers these contentious issues from different angles. Among the topics covered are Jewish memorial projects, both in Poland and beyond its borders, the Polish approach to Holocaust memory under communist rule, and post-communist efforts both to retrieve the Jewish dimension to Polish wartime memory and to reckon with the dark side of the Polish national past. An interview with Henryk Grynberg touches on many of these issues, as do the three poems by Grynberg reproduced here. The 'New Views' section features innovative research in other areas of Polish–Jewish studies. A special section is devoted to research concerning the New Synagogue in Poznan, built in 1907, which is still standing only because the Nazis turned it into a swimming pool.

The ancient world is a paradigm for the memory scholar. Without an awareness that collective memories are not only different from individual memories (or even the sum thereof) but also highly constructed, ancient research will be fundamentally flawed. Many networks of memories are beautifully represented in the written and material remains of antiquity, and it is precisely the ways in which they are fashioned, distorted, preserved or erased through which we can learn about the historical process as such. Our evidence is deeply characterized by the fact that ancient ‘identity’ and ‘memory’ appear exceptionally strong. Responsible for this is a continuing desire to link the present to the remote past, which creates many contexts in which memories were constructed. The ancient historian therefore has the right tools with which to work: places and objects from the past, monuments and iconography, and textual narratives with a primary purpose to memorize and commemorate. This is paired with our desire to understand the ancient world through its own self-perception. With the opportunity of tapping into this world by way of oral history, personal testimonies are a desideratum in all respects. Memory of the past, however, is profoundly about ‘self-understanding’. This volume surveys and builds on the many insights we have gained from vibrant research in the field since Maurice Halbwachs’ and Jan Assmann’s seminal studies on the idea and definition of ‘cultural memory’. While focusing on specific themes all chapters address the concepts and expressions of memory, and their historical impact and utilization by groups and individuals at specific times and for specific reasons.

This chapter focuses on Holocaust memorial books. The yizker book, a form that emerged largely after World War II and the Holocaust, although it has important antecedents in the interwar period, further exemplifies the material turn unfolding in Jewish writing. These multilingual books were conceived as objects to commemorate the absence of those murdered populations and destroyed Jewish communities. Though the genre's postwar emergence may be observed in different locations, the prewar example of two memorial books related to the Ukrainian pogroms of 1919–20—Khurban Proskurov (1924) and Felshtin (1937)—suggests an earlier, incipient awareness of writing's particular vulnerability to physical destruction and change. Both books anticipate the tone and substance of the postwar volumes: their distinctive size and formal features; the mix of narrative history, testimony, and images; and the collaborative nature of their production, distant from the events and places they describe. The chapter then considers the books in relation to the broader context of “Holocaust objects” during and after the war, and finally, the “afterlives” of the memorial books in contemporary fiction.

In its form, this paper is a detailed review of Volume 7 of N. Gogol’s “Complete Works in 23 Volumes”, which includes Gogol’s “main” work “Dead Souls”. In addition to discussing this particular volume and the complexity of its textual preparation (implemented by Y. Mann and I. Zaitseva) and in-depth commentary, the author analyses the very principle of the new academic Complete Works that were initiated by S. Bocharov and Y. Mann. The latter served as their editor-in-chief for twenty years. This unprecedented edition, devoid of partiality and striving for the accurate and verified use of sources to give the reader the best possible idea of the writer’s oeuvre and its diverse interpretations, may be called a triumph of true philology. Although many have spoken of the latter’s disappearance, it clearly manifests itself in the publications of Y. Mann and in the “Complete Works and Letters of N. Gogol in 23 Volumes”.

I have never outgrown habits acquired as a youngster, wandering down to Adriance Memorial Library in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Saturday afternoons and spending endless hours reading about whatever came to mind. It was truly a window on the world. Library books have a characteristic smell, a feel-one might almost say an aura. The edges of pages crack in characteristic ways. There is something sensual as well as intellectual in being surrounded by aged books. I also love the silence of the stacks, for aisle-wandering is a lonely occupation.

The article is devoted to the history of M. Gorky's last library. The volumes of the book collection are located in the memorial museum-apartment of the writer on Malaya Nikitskaya street in Moscow. Gorky collected books all his life, the multi-volume collection that has come down to our days is the final one. The library, which has been formed for more than forty years, has a complex history. The last volumes were added to the library in 1936. The main part of the stored items is located in the memorial exposition. Bookcases with books are located not only in the library, but also in the main hallway, in the hall and along the marble staircase - this was the case under Gorky. The composition of the library, the principle of book arrangement, systematization and subject matter have also been preserved. Of great interest are the inscriptions and Gorky's marks on the books. Gorky's personal library is an integral part of the museum interiors, emphasizing the specifics of the lifetime setting of the memorial exposition. This is notonly an invaluable exhibit of the museum, but also a significant source of studying the personality of the writer and the socio-cultural processes of his era.

An associative memory can be thought of as an array of discriminant functions that maps a selected set of input vectors x to a prescribed set of output binary vectors y. We discuss the use of quadratic discriminant functions of the following form as building blocks for constructing optical associative memories: Quadratic associative memories provide a dramatic increase in storage capacity, defined as the total number of associations that can be stored in the tensor of weights w ijk , compared to the commonly used linear associative memories because of an increase in the available degrees of freedom. We will discuss two separate methods for storing information in quadratic memories and describe corresponding optical systems for implementing these memories. The first scheme utilizes volume holography to store associations of 1-D vectors. The 3-D volume hologram is used to store and implement the third rank tensor of weights. The second method utilizes planar holograms for information storage in conjunction with square-law nonlinearity to calculate the required quadratic expansion.

Optical volume holographic memories provide the potential for high storage capacity, parallel readout of data pages with short access times and high data transfer rates. Multiple image storage in a single region of a photorefractive crystal can be achieved using different addressing techniques as angular, wavelength, or phase-coded multiplexing. In combination with spatial multiplexing, volume holographic memories may achieve the storage of more than 1 Terabyte of information. Among these techniques, orthogonal phase-coded multiplexing [1] offers several advantages over angular and wavelength multiplexing, having the same storage capacity. A holographic data storage system based on phase-coded multiplexing operates with a fixed wavelength and a fixed geometry, avoiding mechanically moving parts. At the same time it provides short readout times and high energy efficiency. The signal-to-noise ratio of phase-coded multiplexing for a given number of holograms is more than two orders of magnitude higher than for angular and wavelength multiplexing [2]. Moreover, it allows to perform arithmetic operations as addition and subtraction of two or more data pages directly during readout of the memory [3]. Image processing operations like comparison of two stored images or image inversion and the logical operations OR, XOR and NOT with digital data pages can be realized in that way. Therefore, using phase-coded optical memories, high capacity data storage and high speed data processing becomes possible simultaneously.

Peculiarities of a new anthropological model homo eudaimonicus are analysed, as well as the specificity and perspectives of its implementation in the contemporary system of education. The efficiency of homo eudaimonicus model for the achievement of sustainable and lasting happiness, increase of life satisfaction level and enhancement of environmental behavior of a person is elucidated. It is explicated that the purpose of happiness-oriented education is to teach children ways of achieving happiness from socially useful activities. Methodsand techniques for mastering the temporal continuum of happiness are suggested, that is to experience happiness due to happy memories, appreciation of the present and positive scenarios of the future.
