ABSTRACT:This article offers a reconsideration of planning and development in English towns and cities after the Black Death (1348). Conventional historical accounts have stressed the occurrence of urban ‘decay’ in the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Here, instead, a case is made that after 1350 urban planning continued to influence towns and cities in England through the transformation of their townscapes. Using the conceptual approaches of urban morphologists in particular, the article demonstrates that not only did the foundation of new towns and creation of new suburbs characterize the period 1350–1530, but so too did the redevelopment of existing urban landscapes through civic improvements and public works. These reveal evidence for the particular ‘agents of change’ involved in the planning and development process, such as surveyors, officials, patrons and architects, and also the role played by maps and drawn surveys. In this reappraisal, England's urban experiences can be seen to have been closely connected with those instances of urban planning after the Black Death occurring elsewhere in contemporary continental Europe.

The medieval Islamic cities were described to be systematically managed by the institution of hisba, henceforward, inspiring modern Muslims to revive the Islamic paradigm of urban management. Nevertheless, not much is being discussed on the role of muhtasib as an urban regulator. Furthermore, it has been wrongly understood only as a market inspector. Thus, employing the content analysis approach, this article examines the roles of muhtasib in urban management, based on selected manuals of muhtasib, written during the medieval times. Interestingly, the findings indicate a series of Islamic principles on urban management that match modern urban management, albeit the difference of time. AbstractIn the reconstruction of German cities after the Second World War, public administrations attempted to find solutions for essential urban situations through targeted competitions. In the city of Goch on the Lower Rhine the area around the medieval Steintor (Stone Gate) had to be adapted to modern traffic requirements. In the course of the urban planning the private interests of the residents who were willing to build up clashed with the planned construction as a concern of the common good, which was represented by the district government of Düsseldorf. The solution was to be found through an urban design competition among selected experts, from whose proposals the City Planning Office drew up an alignment plan. The exemplary recapitulation of this urban planning process illustrates aspects of the history of planning, monument preservation and reconstruction competitions

AbstractIt is proposed that assemblage theory offers the possibility of exploring archaeological evidence in innovative ways, in order to write alternative narratives of urban development. By combining historical and archaeological scholarship with work in contemporary urban geography, it is proposed that the concept of urban decline in the later Middle Ages is problematic and a more fruitful alternative approach would be to focus on the transformation of urban assemblages. These ideas are explored by drawing upon archaeological evidence from Southampton, UK.

This article analyses modern interpretations of the medieval plan of the Bridgettine Monastery of Naantali, Finland. Instead of seeing the distinct spatial organisation as deviation from the Bridgettine norm, we consider it as an expression of a medieval process, by which monastic principles were re-conceptualised in order to be realised in material form. This perspective builds on the shift in thinking that has taken place in the study of medieval urban planning. Instead of being ‘organic’, meaning disorganised, medieval urban development has come to be considered as intentional, guided by general principles, although not in a manner that is always obvious to the modern mind. We concur that models such as St Bridget’s visions and the plan of Vadstena Abbey are important tools for reconstructing medieval monastic plans. Meanwhile, we propose that such models can also add latent and counterproductive baggage to this field of study by encouraging modern expectations of regularity within monastic architecture. If the designs of monasteries do not follow such models perfectly, discrepancies are often erroneously misconceived as indications of the builders’ insufficient skills and knowledge.

ABSTRACT:A remarkable cluster of Irish town histories appeared in the early nineteenth century, coming after several generations of unprecedented urban growth. But that growth stalled and most Irish towns entered a long period of stagnation. Meanwhile, academic interest in the urban past became dormant. Urbanization in Ireland resumed in the twentieth century, but the study of urban history was late to develop and slow to move beyond the documentation of built heritage. However, public interest in medieval origins, official interest in urban heritage and the vision of a handful of medieval historians and historical geographers have helped transform the prospects for Irish urban history.

During the twelfth and thirteenth-centuries, Ireland experienced a large-scale urbanization movement, initiated as part of the Anglo-Norman conquest and colonization of the island. As part of this process, old settlements were re-modelled and promoted; and an extensive network of new towns were planted across the Irish medieval landscape. This dissertation examines the development of this colonial urbanization movement with particular reference to the urban planning aspects of the process. Volume I, considers the origins, influences, and ideals of the Anglo-Norman town builders, as well as the morphogenetic, spatial and distributive characteristics of their endeavors. In addition, the current level of scholarship on the subject is highlighted and discussed. Volume II, focuses on a series of typical Anglo-Norman town foundations, where the origins, plan and burgage development patterns are explored in depth, through the techniques of plan and metrological analysis.

This thesis investigates women’s geographical movement in medieval England from the perspective of mobility and freedom. It uses pilgrimage accounts from medieval miracle story collections and to gather information about individual travel patterns. The study uses GIS to analyze gendered mobility patterns, and to investigate whether there were noticeable differences in the distance which men and women traveled and the geographical area of the country they originated. It also analyzes the nearness of men’s and women’s respective origin towns to alternative pilgrimage locations, as a means of examining the factors determining gendered travel mobility. The study finds that women’s travel distances were less than men’s, especially in the later medieval period, but that they were in fact more likely than men to come from areas proximate to alternative pilgrimage sites. This suggests the existence of higher mobility capacity for women living in areas with greater contact with other travelers.

This thesis is an attempt at a first comprehensive study of the archaeology of the entire region of medieval Epirus, i.e., including areas on either side of the Albanian-Greek border. The period under investigation is the thirteenth century Despotate rule, a time of fragmentation and decentralisation in the history of the Byzantine Empire, following the capture of Byzantium’s capital, Constantinople, by the Latin crusaders in 1204. Against this historical panorama, the study aims to contribute to our understanding of the socio-cultural developments that characterized the region under autonomous governance and within a complex East-West Mediterranean context. Drawing from all forms of available material remains (excavated and above ground) and in conjunction with other sources (topographic, environmental and historical), the thesis sheds light on the patterns of human occupation in the urban and rural contexts, exploring aspects such as fortification chronology, building methods and practices, defence policies and patronage, urban topography and fabric, medieval Byzantine urban planning, rural churches and monasteries, material culture and the economy, and cultural interaction with neighbouring Mediterranean regions. The study shows that a continuation of the concept of centralised governance in the region of Epirus in the broad sense, and specifically of centralised governance of public works is suggested by the evidence on fortification construction. The churches and monasteries built or refurbished throughout the thirteenth century reflect the economic wealth and the political and cultural dynamics of the Despotate in the thirteenth century. It can be surmised that Epirote urban and rural settlements at this time were in essence a further development of processes that I think were rooted in the developments of the ninth-eleventh centuries of the so-called Byzantine revival.

Geophysical surveys in Pliska and Veliki Preslav (Bulgaria) brought a breakthrough in our view of the appearance of early medieval centres in the Balkans. Urban planning on a scale of dozens of hectares has been documented for the first time. It has been found that wooden buildings massively accompany masonry architecture. Using a magnetic survey, we have been able to define the road network and functionally specific areas.

This chapter examines how the greater involvement of caliphs and governors in early Islam in the patronage of urban retailing and crafts contributed to a redefinition of the topography of late antique and early medieval settlements from the Near East to Central Asia. The model of clustering productive and trading activities, which can be seen in its infancy in the Roman world in Pompeii, was expanded and became the norm from 700. This model evolved from simple communal working areas integrated in the urban fabric before 750 in the Levant to solely economic rabaḍ relocated outside the city walls in the ninth and tenth centuries in Iraq, Soghdia, and Ferghana. This chapter argues that this clustering of economic activities was favoured by a change in the location of the civic power under the ‘Abbāsids.

The two centuries following Constantine’s foundation saw the expansion of Constantinople, with palaces, fora, harbors, aqueducts, cisterns, and an impressive system of fortifications. Justinian’s new foundation of Caričin Grad (Iustiniana Prima) gives some sense of the continuity of Late Antique urban planning principles; Resafa (Sergiopolis) was provided with a new set of fortifications and ceremonial spaces; Ephesus demonstrates the urban continuity of long-established cities. Housing types and fortifications follow long-established practices.

This chapter investigates the city-planning of Jerusalem under the British Mandate in light of changes of thinking about the urban in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In particular, it explores how Charles Ashbee, the first civic adviser, could enact his Garden City and Arts and Crafts principles, developed twenty-five years earlier, because of the specific conditions of imperial governance. The privileging of the medieval city, in contrast to the contemporary — a principle deeply indebted to artistic ideals of a previous generation — deeply influenced decisions of what to restore, destroy, or preserve. The chapter discusses how religion, empire, and urban planning interlock in a key site of cultural conflict.

‘The Age of the Ghetto’ originated in Italy in the mid-16th century and ended around the time of the French Revolution. Italian city-states, reluctant to sacrifice their economic interests, chose the compromise of enclosure over the expulsion or conversion of Jewish inhabitants. The word ‘ghetto’ evolved from the name of a specific Venetian district to a term adopted by Jews throughout Italy, incorporating the Hebrew ‘ghet’ meaning ‘bill of divorce’. Ghettos, which were often vibrant religious and cultural communities, eventually became overcrowded and unsafe. Over 300 years the ghetto was incorporated into major cities such as Rome and Florence. The Age of the Ghetto, as it was called, looked back to medieval religious prejudice and forward to modern maritime economics and urban planning.

Historic-geographical and Typo-morphological assessment of Lefke town, North Cyprus Sanaz Nezhadmasoum¹, Nevter Zafer Comert² Department of Architecture. Eastern Mediterranean University. Famagusta. North Cyprus.Via Mersin 10. Turkey E-mail: sanaz.nezhadmasoum@gmail.com, nzafer@gmail.com Keywords: Historic-geographic approach, Typo-morphology, Urban form, Lefke town Conference topics and scale: Urban morphological methods and techniques Morphological analysis in cities have been employed to conduct the research on the urban form and fabric of the place, that helps to determine the conservation plans or strategies of towns that reveal clues to their own history (Whithand,2001). Such analysis methods are a process that reviews the evolution and evaluation of towns throughout history. This paper focuses on, Conzen’s and Caniggia’s ideas, MRG Conzen’s historic-geographical approaches (1968) on planning level and Caniggia’s typo-morphological process (2001) on architectural level. Those methodologies help to understand the transformation procedure of different regions of city throughout the years and recovering how the city elements and urban hierarchy are interrelated. Additionally, the focus of this paper is to study the town’s morphological transformations, regarding its spatial, geographical and historical combinations. Within this context, Geographical and historical surveys done on the whole town of Lefke, in north-west Cyprus, and a detailed explanation on the typo-morphological analyses of some particular regions will be given in this article. One of the significant character that makes the town unique is its historical background which lay down with an organic urban pattern from Ottoman period. Lefke town was first formed with a medieval character, and through centuries of functional and physical transformations, has been highly influenced by British extensions, which were either prearranged modifications affected by socio- natural, economic, and political situations, or instinctive and spontaneous changes. All these historical factors, along with its geographical features, make Lefke an interesting case to be studied with an urban typo-morphological approach.
