ABSTRACT:In March 1447, a great fire broke out in Valencia, caused by a former member of the municipal government. This fire destroyed many houses and craft workshops around the Market Square, the economic centre of the city. The municipal government had to compensate the citizens, who had lost everything, and restore everyday life in the area. A versatile Italian watchmaker living in Valencia was chosen to supervise the rehabilitation of the area. Under his direction, the debris was removed. Then after a conscious campaign of urban planning aimed at eliminating any traces of the old Islamic city, the streets were reconstructed according to the norms of the western city.

This paper illustrates a study for the reuse of selected historic buildings in the Medieval City of Rhodes in Greece. This study contributes to the understanding and interpretation of the chronological sequence of major intervention programs for the preservation of the Medieval City. The main idea of the project is the spatial distribution of compatible and various uses to reveal the unique character of the Medieval City. Spatial planning is proposed within the preserved urban zones in order to optimize and harmonize the selected uses according to the needs of sustainable urban development. Criteria to assess the compatible uses that ensure the features and architectural characteristics of the preselected historic buildings, located within the city fabric, were established and validated. The developed methodology that is presented herein and is an indispensable part of a pilot project may be applicable to other cases concerning historic cities. Finally, this paper aims to present a pilot program which promotes the reuse of historic buildings as a part of an integrated preservation plan. Inter-disciplinarity has set the basis for effective policies to guide and control the proposed pilot program, with ultimate objective to ensure sustainable preservation of the Medieval City of Rhodes.

This essay describes the archaeology of the revival in the later tenth- to eleventh-century of the town of Butrint, ancient Buthrotum in south-west Albania. Based on the extensive excavations by the Butrint Foundation, all the elements (fortifications, town-planning, roads, property boundaries, dwellings, churches, wells) of a new urban centre are considered, as is its economy and its wider historical context in the southern Adriatic Sea.

This paper argues that “new” sustainable technologies being used to manage human waste—composting toilets, bioremediation, and biodigestion—are essentially reviving the medieval strategy of waste management: containment and reuse of waste, as opposed to the modern strategy of dilution and evacuation. This debate should not occur in a vacuum, uninformed by the motivations for, and history of, the development of the modern system. Therefore, this paper more closely examines the medieval system, which closely linked waste and agricultural production. It then considers the transformation to the modern system, using the design of Leonardo da Vinci's city of Romorantin as a case study. It is argued that this transformation was largely predicated on now-delegitimized miasmic theory, which held foul or corrupt air to be the cause of disease, and that it precipitated larger changes in the urban environment. In light of this historical view it is suggested that contemporary sustainable technologies imply larger changes in the form of human settlement, and that the nature of these changes must be explored further.

Traditional water systems as a water management practice in today’s context are overridden by various factors and are struggling to be a functional part of the city. These systems now demand regeneration regarding their history, cultural and traditional practices, and the indigenous geographical conditions of the area. This research documents and investigates the struggles of one of the partially functional traditional water system in Aurangabad, locally known as ‘Neher’ system. It was observed that this Neher system in Aurangabad, constructed in the 16th century, is still a viable water supply method for few agricultural and domestic uses with enormous heritage and cultural values attached to the system. This paralyzed yet functional Neher system calls for protection and conservation as indigenous water heritage and, simultaneously, as a sustainable source of supplying water.

AbstractIn the reconstruction of German cities after the Second World War, public administrations attempted to find solutions for essential urban situations through targeted competitions. In the city of Goch on the Lower Rhine the area around the medieval Steintor (Stone Gate) had to be adapted to modern traffic requirements. In the course of the urban planning the private interests of the residents who were willing to build up clashed with the planned construction as a concern of the common good, which was represented by the district government of Düsseldorf. The solution was to be found through an urban design competition among selected experts, from whose proposals the City Planning Office drew up an alignment plan. The exemplary recapitulation of this urban planning process illustrates aspects of the history of planning, monument preservation and reconstruction competitions

This thesis has arisen from fieldwork intended to track all landmarks in the old village of les Corts, district of present-day Barcelona. Its aim to state what was, has been and is today’s neighbourhood. City planning, art and testimonies throughout the town’s history are studied. From 10th century Torre Rodona to present day. The aim of this research is to state the conditions of the birth of les Corts. It begins with the study of the spread-out masies, mainly located between Riera de Magòria and Riera Blanca and the Torrent dels Morts. This makes for an in-depth analysis of the town’s origins and the idiosyncrasies of its peoples and families. This investigation also analyses other significant locations and landmarks such as cultural centres and small palaces located in streets now sadly gone, as well as hospices and religious, educational and leisure institutions. Special attention is put on industries and workshops that set up in town. In addition to the aforementioned, this investigation features analyses of furniture and tools used between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, such as the ones stored in the Monestir de Pedralbes museum, as well as studies of other significant institutions of that time such as the Dolsa asylum, the women’s prison, the Maternitat hospital, the Sant Rafael and Sant Joan de Déu shelters, as well as the Remei parish and other important leisure and cultural centres. This research has been made possible through access to old archive photographs as well as to living testimonials of people still living in the neighbourhood who were born before 1936. To all of them we sincerely thank for opening the doors to their homes and letting us access their archives and files, which credit all the research. All in all, this thesis aims to start an in-depth study of the evolution of the land in les Corts through oral testimonies, as well as archive research that will help broaden knowledge on city planning, architecture, leisure, culture, craftsmanship and industry that have existed in les Corts from medieval times until present day.

This chapter focuses on Clarence Samuel Stein's postwar concept of the Regional City as well as the maturation of his town planning ideas. Stein and his colleagues began to regularly use the term Regional City in 1927. Their early conception envisioned an amalgam of the romanticized medieval village with connections to the land combined with all the conveniences offered through new technologies to enhance modern lifestyles in distinctive, relatively small towns. Stein, together with MacKaye and Mumford, advocated for regional, even national, planning based on the ideas the Regional Planning Association of America (RPAA) had already promoted, including regional river basin planning, the townless highways, and state planning. This chapter considers Stein's postwar advocacy of communitarian regionalism and the rebirth of the RPAA as the Regional Development Council of America (RDCA). It also examines how Stein applied his collaborative regionalist and town planning ideals in a concrete project at Kitimat in Canada.

Despite the unpleasant realities of the period, Mount Athos and other monastic centers flourished in the Late Byzantine period. Thessalonike, as the second city of the empire with a long history, witnessed much construction in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. While following the complexities of the new architecture of Constantinople, the construction in Thessalonike was primarily monastic rather than aristocratic in its patronage. By contrast, Mystras was a new city, whose organization was completely subject to the steep topography and the requirement of defense, lacking any evidence of orthogonal planning. Patronage was aristocratic, following the model of Constantinople, with which there were strong architectural connections.

This chapter investigates the city-planning of Jerusalem under the British Mandate in light of changes of thinking about the urban in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In particular, it explores how Charles Ashbee, the first civic adviser, could enact his Garden City and Arts and Crafts principles, developed twenty-five years earlier, because of the specific conditions of imperial governance. The privileging of the medieval city, in contrast to the contemporary — a principle deeply indebted to artistic ideals of a previous generation — deeply influenced decisions of what to restore, destroy, or preserve. The chapter discusses how religion, empire, and urban planning interlock in a key site of cultural conflict.

This chapter examines how the greater involvement of caliphs and governors in early Islam in the patronage of urban retailing and crafts contributed to a redefinition of the topography of late antique and early medieval settlements from the Near East to Central Asia. The model of clustering productive and trading activities, which can be seen in its infancy in the Roman world in Pompeii, was expanded and became the norm from 700. This model evolved from simple communal working areas integrated in the urban fabric before 750 in the Levant to solely economic rabaḍ relocated outside the city walls in the ninth and tenth centuries in Iraq, Soghdia, and Ferghana. This chapter argues that this clustering of economic activities was favoured by a change in the location of the civic power under the ‘Abbāsids.

‘The Age of the Ghetto’ originated in Italy in the mid-16th century and ended around the time of the French Revolution. Italian city-states, reluctant to sacrifice their economic interests, chose the compromise of enclosure over the expulsion or conversion of Jewish inhabitants. The word ‘ghetto’ evolved from the name of a specific Venetian district to a term adopted by Jews throughout Italy, incorporating the Hebrew ‘ghet’ meaning ‘bill of divorce’. Ghettos, which were often vibrant religious and cultural communities, eventually became overcrowded and unsafe. Over 300 years the ghetto was incorporated into major cities such as Rome and Florence. The Age of the Ghetto, as it was called, looked back to medieval religious prejudice and forward to modern maritime economics and urban planning.

According to contemporary chroniclers, street fights were daily events in medieval Tuscan cities. In an urban environment, mental and tactical preparedness was necessary, although it was also important to know the inner politics of the city. The background of these conflicts was primarily described by the great urban history writers such as Giovanni Villani and Dino Compagni, but there are also special type sources, the so-called ricordanze, that show different elements of this micro-warfare phenomenon. These sources, which can be defined as merchant diaries, had a more personal viewpoint than the great chronicles, and as for the studies on the roots of the conflicts, it was more practical. The Velluti-Mannelli vendetta which happened in 1295 – written down by Donato Velluti – tells us about conscious time and place planning. The attacks had to be prepared not just politically and tactically, but from the economical point of view, too – which also transpires from the chronicle of Luca di Firidolfi da Panzano, who wrote about the hunting for his father’s murderers. The avengers travelled hundreds of kilometres and used the tools of medieval scouting and spycraft. In this paper, I explain and examine the thoughts of the ricordanze authors and conclude my article with a discussion on conflict resolution strategies. Although for medieval writers the most important elements were the fights, based on the parts of the ricordanze that mention the background of the feuds and the logical structure of the narratives we can also examine the situations that led to the war. Thus, we can attempt to analyse the families’ strategies associated with the preparation for conflict and the orchestrating of the raids and combats.

Historic-geographical and Typo-morphological assessment of Lefke town, North Cyprus Sanaz Nezhadmasoum¹, Nevter Zafer Comert² Department of Architecture. Eastern Mediterranean University. Famagusta. North Cyprus.Via Mersin 10. Turkey E-mail: sanaz.nezhadmasoum@gmail.com, nzafer@gmail.com Keywords: Historic-geographic approach, Typo-morphology, Urban form, Lefke town Conference topics and scale: Urban morphological methods and techniques Morphological analysis in cities have been employed to conduct the research on the urban form and fabric of the place, that helps to determine the conservation plans or strategies of towns that reveal clues to their own history (Whithand,2001). Such analysis methods are a process that reviews the evolution and evaluation of towns throughout history. This paper focuses on, Conzen’s and Caniggia’s ideas, MRG Conzen’s historic-geographical approaches (1968) on planning level and Caniggia’s typo-morphological process (2001) on architectural level. Those methodologies help to understand the transformation procedure of different regions of city throughout the years and recovering how the city elements and urban hierarchy are interrelated. Additionally, the focus of this paper is to study the town’s morphological transformations, regarding its spatial, geographical and historical combinations. Within this context, Geographical and historical surveys done on the whole town of Lefke, in north-west Cyprus, and a detailed explanation on the typo-morphological analyses of some particular regions will be given in this article. One of the significant character that makes the town unique is its historical background which lay down with an organic urban pattern from Ottoman period. Lefke town was first formed with a medieval character, and through centuries of functional and physical transformations, has been highly influenced by British extensions, which were either prearranged modifications affected by socio- natural, economic, and political situations, or instinctive and spontaneous changes. All these historical factors, along with its geographical features, make Lefke an interesting case to be studied with an urban typo-morphological approach. The fervour unleashed in the press signified a unique moment when architecture, conservation, planning and development became a much – and still – talked about part of the public discourse in Britain. Conservation theory had dictated since its early guidelines of practice that new additions to historic works should be clearly distinguished from their original host or the existing environment. Historicism, imitating the existing architecture within an urban setting was taboo, a notion that went back to Ruskin and the anti-scrape lobby of Morris. Unravelling the events of the 1980s, however, reveals that the desire to copy past forms as a means of retaining the past maintained an ongoing and strong legacy. It had become a method of seeking refuge from the failures of modernism and the divergence between traditional and modern forms, language and techniques. Openly acknowledged that modernism was anti- historic and anti-urban, classicism and medieval towns and forms offered the example of outdoor rooms and a predominance of solids over voids. For the then Prince and his many followers, including vast members of the public, the use of a traditional architectural style as infill in a classically inspired building setting was “good” design practice. At this point, ironically, the retreat to historicism also comprised not only mimicking traditional details but also their playful reinterpretation through an esoteric postmodernism. But the topic of new into old had become confused: the critical issue was one of urban design and not the language of infill architecture. Three case studies within the historic core of the City of London, the basis of criticism in Charles’ speeches of 1984 and 1987, will be explored through the popular press in order to understand their lessons and relevance to the complexity of current contemporary conflicts in historic urban areas.
