This article show the theoretical and methodological propose about the study of the book as political object in the Middle Ages. Abstract: This article provides a summary overview of the collection of pre-1600 western European manuscripts in Loyola University Chicago Archives & Special Collections. The collection presently comprises four manuscript codices, at least thirty-eight fragments, and four documents. The codices are a thirteenth-century book of hours from German-speaking lands; a fifteenth-century Dutch prayer book; a preacher's compilation written probably in southern Germany in the 1440s; and two fifteenth-century Italian humanist booklets, bound together since the nineteenth century, transmitting Donatus's commentary on the Eunuchus (incomplete) and an anthology of theological excerpts, respectively. The fragments consist of thirteen leaves from books dismembered by modern booksellers (most are from fifteenth-century books of hours) and a larger number of binding fragments, all but two of which remain in situ. These represent the remains of ten manuscript books: four Latin liturgical books, two texts of Roman civil law, one large-format thirteenth-century Italian Bible, one thirteenth-century copy of Ptolemy's Almagest in the translation of Gerard of Cremona, one late fourteenth-century copy of the Ockhamist Tractatus de principiis theologiae , and one fifteenth-century Dutch book of hours in the translation of Geert Grote. Many of these materials have remained unidentified until now.

AbstractThis article compares the circulation and reception of useful knowledge—from medical and craft recipes to prognostications and agricultural treatises—in late medieval English manuscripts and early printed practical books. It first surveys the contents and composition of eighty-eight fifteenth-century vernacular practical manuscripts identified in significant collections in the United States and United Kingdom. Close analysis of four of these late medieval practical miscellanies reveals that their compilers saw these manuscripts as repositories for the collection of an established body of useful knowledge. The article then traces the transmission of these medieval practical texts in early printed books. As the pressures of a commercial book market gradually transformed how these practical texts were presented, readers became conditioned to discover “new” knowledge in the pages of printed books. The introduction to England of the “book of secrets” in 1558 encouraged readers to hunt for “secrets” in unpublished medieval manuscripts, ensuring that these century-old sources would remain important sites for useful knowledge well into the early modern era.

Abstract Drawing on the work of Sianne Ngai in Ugly Feelings (2005), in this essay we focus on two examples from early fifteenth-century medieval literature that represent medieval books as ‘ugly’ either because they arouse negative feelings of aversion or disgust or because they are considered in some way aesthetically lacking or inadequate. Christine de Pizan’s Livre de la cité des dames and Margery Kempe’s Book of Margery Kempe present women’s involvement with troubling or difficult books. The ‘ugly book feelings’ which both narrators encounter challenge not only their authority as writers, but their very sense of self. Such feelings, however, are transitory when placed in narrative context: in the two examples we discuss, a single material text serves as the catalyst for a moment of emotional transformation which may be spiritual and/or intellectual. Attending to literary representations of ugly book feelings, we argue, complements existing scholarship on late medieval women’s relationship to material textual culture by placing such feelings at the centre of a broad emotional spectrum.

For the first time in historiography there is considered the composition of manuscript books of XVI century, being preserved at the Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library. The author focuses on the dated books which have special records, including the date and place of book production, scribes and customers. These records are the main source for studying the process of book production in the medieval Russia. The aim of this article is to give the information about 111 dated books written in 1500-1600 from 22 collections of manuscripts of the Russian State Library. The work includes the catalogue of dated manuscript books, which contains data on the name, size, pressmark, date and the place of book production, scribes and customers. The scientific importance of this catalogue is connected with the new data on the books from the uncharacterized collections (such as E. Egorov’s and P. Ovchinnikov’s collections). These materials are the important addition to the amount of known data on book culture of the medieval Russia.

AbstractThe historicity of books – their role as a force in history – has been addressed in post-war literary studies from different perspectives and across various disciplines. Nevertheless, the scholarship on the history of the book in medieval Islam is still relatively sparse, even though this society underwent a thorough process of textualization. But even authors who do consider the social and cultural role of books in medieval Islam look only at the production and consumption of Arabic books within the boundaries of Muslim society, relying on Islamic sources which reflect mainly the courtly milieu of scribes and secretariats. None discuss books produced and consumed by the religious minorities that were an indispensable part of this society, and none have made use of the abundant Genizah documents as source material. In the present programmatic article, I call attention to the many book lists found in the Cairo Genizah and to their potential as significant tools for developing a better understanding of the cultural and social history of the medieval Islamicate world.

Cheap books produced and read by medieval Jews in the East have been little studied so far. The main source for the study of Hebrew book culture in general and popular and cheap books in particular is the Cairo Geniza. Only a few documents contain explicit information about the books’ costs of production and prices. However, as it is argued in this paper, additional information can be deduced from the extant book fragments themselves. Taking as an example fragments of rotuli or bookrolls from the Cairo Geniza, this paper examines the ways of making cheaper books by reducing the cost of wriitng material and of the scribe’s working time.

The article deals with the phenomenon of medieval Arabic manuscript book or a book written in Arabic script in non-Arabic language. Despite the large number of works where this phenomenon was analyzed, their authors did not provide a clear list of the criteria, which are specific to the Arabic manuscript book tradition in comparison to other medieval manuscript traditions of the West and East. Methodologically, the work is based on the principles of the “immanent analysis” of the phenomenon developed by the Russian and Soviet philological schools at the beginning of the last century in relation to the analysis of literary works. The authors of this article came to the conclusion that the structure-forming components of the phenomenon of the Arabic medieval manuscript book were as follows: 1) the Arabic script, as well as 2) the architectonics of the text of the Arabic manuscript book and 3) the specific features of the Arabic bibliographic description. The authors believe that these three components identified the Arabic (arabographic) handwritten book throughout its existence: from the 9th century AD to the present and from Eastern Europe to Indonesia. The results allow us to clearly understand what distinguished a book belonging to the Arabic manuscript tradition from manuscript books that were transcribed at the same time and in the same region, such as Coptic or Syriac.

Throughout the late medieval period, books were an integral part of religious monastic life, and yet such objects have received little attention from an analytical archaeological perspective, despite the significant quantity of metal book fittings recovered from archaeological sites. This thesis explores the archaeological collections held by English Heritage together with published excavation reports, investigating late medieval book fittings, dating between the mid-eleventh and mid-sixteenth centuries, which have been archaeologically recovered from English monastic sites. This work presents the first typology of these artefacts and considers in detail the many and varied forms of late medieval book fittings. In order to contextualise and give a clear understanding of this material, this study investigates late medieval book production, monasticism, and the types of books housed within monasteries and the locations in which they were used and stored. This research goes on to examine the wider social and cultural contexts of book fittings within late medieval monastic society using pictorial and documentary evidence, and extant late medieval bookbindings and library catalogues, in conjunction with the archaeological material. The themes explored include the types of books on which book fittings were used, the influences of different monastic orders, their geographical distribution and the significance of their deposition, particularly as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. By undertaking these methods of investigation, it has become clear that, within the catalogue, different forms of book fittings and styles of decoration were more commonly used in certain regions and by particular monastic orders, and that significant numbers of books were destroyed and their fittings disposed of during the Dissolution in the 1530s both on and away from monastic sites. This research brings together both archaeological and historical approaches to the study of late medieval book fittings, creating an innovative and broad-based study of this particular form of material culture so leading to a new insight into the archaeology of late medieval books.

This thesis is in two parts. The first part consists of translations of five medieval commentaries on the Book of Lamentations composed by Rashi, Yosef Kara, and Abraham ibn Ezra. While the Rashi and ibn Ezra commentaries are available in translation, the two written by Yosef Kara are not. These two Kara commentaries contain transliterated Medieval French dialects that are difficult to translate, at least in part, because the copyists did not appear to understand what they were copying. The translation of these texts has, therefore, begun the long task of trying to develop a system by which Kara's Medieval French explanations may be understood. The initial findings are recorded in the translations. The second part of this work concerns the development of a method by which these translations may be better understood. A comparison of eight verses from the Book of Lamentations was made, and a method based on sociolinguistic and literary theory was applied, to attempt an explanation of the use of peshat method of exegesis as a function of meaning.

This dissertation explores the impact of gender ideologies held by medieval readerships on the production of books and circulation of texts in late medieval England. The first chapter explores how the professional book trade of late medieval London circulated booklets of Chauceriana which constructed masculinity and femininity in strict adherence to the courtly love literary tradition. In the second chapter, I demonstrate that such a standardized representation of courtly gender could be adapted by a readership removed from the professional book trade, in this case the rural gentry producers of the Findern manuscript, who present a revised vision of femininity and courtliness in their anthology. This revised femininity includes several texts which privilege the female speaking voice. The third chapter goes on to investigate the use of the female voice in one particular genre, the love lyric, and asks if the female lyric speaker can be associated with manuscripts in which women participated as producers or readers. Finally, the fourth chapter turns to masculinity, examining how the commonplace book of an early 16th century grocer, Richard Hill, contains selections from didactic and recreational literature which reinforce the ideals of masculine conduct in the merchant community of late medieval London. The dissertation concludes that manuscript contexts must be taken into account when reading gender in medieval English literature.

This thesis examines the Ely Act Book, the record of the consistory court of Ely from 1374 to 1382. It uses the defamation cases from the Act Book as a lens to examine the influence of the court. After a brief discussion of the Act Book itself – its survival, its construction, and its layout, the thesis explores the Ely Consistory Court as an agent of the larger canon law system. It shows that the court enforced canon law, addressing the legal and pastoral concerns of the Church in England, and that the bishop of Ely at the time – Thomas Arundel – was committed to those goals. The second chapter examines the court from the perspective of the people who worked and sought justice in it. It first shows that the court’s emphasis on order and learning demanded the employment of bureaucrats like the man who wrote the Act Book, Robert Foxton. The court provided both a market for their skills and an opportunity to advance their careers. Then the thesis shows that the court also benefited the litigants. It offered both sides an opportunity for legal representation. For the plaintiffs, it provided a judicial solution to disputes, but at the same time it protected defendants with a strong standard of proof, and awarded court costs to the falsely accused.

A small, blind-tooled volume sits on a table covered in green baize: one clasp is open, the other is closed; and a slip of paper emerges from it reading Veritas odium parit (truth breeds hatred). This detail occurs in the foreground of a portrait by Hans Holbein of a young man identified as the Cologne patrician Hermann von Wedigh III (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). A study of the physical features of the book and of the history of the brief text — actually an ancient and then Erasmian adage — leads to a new interpretation of the painting in the context of humanist friendship. The book is seen to be a multivalent simile for the work of art authored by the artist as well as for the sitter himself, raising questions about the implications for these of a medium that can be opened and closed. The half-open condition of the book is understood to reflect the complementary pressures of openness and closedness, accessibility and intimacy, that characterized the Renaissance republic of letters.

А. В. Трауготов, Ф. В. Лемкуля, Г. В. Калиновского, В. Д. Пивоварова, Н. Г. Гольц. The purpose of the study is to classify the principles of interpretation of medieval culture in the domestic children’s book graphics, the topic is relevant due to the diversity of principles of interpretation of Gothic motifs in the art of the book and due to the lack of detailed research on this issue. Architectural motifs in book illustrations act as markers of time and place, denote an epoch, create an emotional and cultural context, contribute to the formation of a fabulous atmosphere of narration, are used in cognitive and educational literature. Medieval architecture in children’s book graphics can be a refl ection of the stylization system or perform a semantic role by infl uencing the principles of image reception. Images of medieval architecture appear in the works of G.A. V. Traugots, F. V. Lemkul, G. V. Kalinovsky, V. D. Pivovarov, N. G. Golts.

The article is devoted to the study of Mongolian-Chinese literary relations during the Middle Ages. The literary process of medieval Mongolia is characterized by the development in a wide context of literary and cultural relationships with the literatures of Central Asia, South Siberia and the Far East, which was due to both the geographical location and the socio-political situation of the country, starting from the 13th century. When studying the problems of Mongolian-Chinese relations, it is important for us to consider the creative synthesis of two neighboring cultures, which stimulates the development and mutual enrichment of literary and folklore traditions. Mongolian-Chinese literary relations are characterized by development in two stages. The first stage is associated with the formation of the Yuan dynasty of the Mongols in China (1271–1368). It was during this period that the foundations were laid for the unification, synthesis of two different cultures within the framework of one state and the further development of the process of historical and cultural relations. The second stage is characterized by the entry of Mongolia into the Manchu Qing Dynasty of China (1644–1911). It was during this period that the synthesis of the Mongolian-Chinese folklore and literary traditions reached its apogee: a new genre appeared called “book tale” (bensen uliger); numerous translations of Chinese narrative prose, in particular novels, lead to the creation of the genre of the novel — historical, family and everyday — in Mongolian literature. A notable achievement in this genre was the work of the outstanding writer, the first Mongolian author of novels, V. Injannash.

The functions of the biblical Slavic-Russian apocrypha in manuscript collections depend on their perception by the ancient Russian scribes and the literary context of the manuscript. Cognitive, interpretative, magical, historical functions are associated with different genre forms, both book and folk. Particularly considered is the «apocryphal riddle» of two brothers from the manuscript of the XVIth century Stockholm Royal Library and manuscripts of the XVIIIth century collections of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg).

‰e article introduces the history of the formation of collections of handwritten and old printed books that were kept among the Old Believers, which then were transferred in the libraries of the Novgorod eological Seminary and the missionary Brotherhood of St. Sophia. As in other regions, these collections arose in the second half of the XIX century due to the need to conduct polemics with representatives of the Old Believers and sectarianism, which was an important part of the so-called “internal mission” of the Greek-Russian Church. ey were based on manuscripts con scated in the Old Believers communities of the Novgorod province, as well as from private collections in the course of government persecution of religious dissidents. At present, some of the books have been preserved in the funds of the National Library of Russia, as well as the Novgorod State Museum-Reservation. ese collections, which include manuscripts and early printed books of the XVI–XIX centuries, are an important source base characterizing the book culture of the Old Believers in the Novgorod region, which in many respects was a continuation of the traditions of Medieval Russia.

The art of bookbinding requires not only skills in the old craft of bookbinding but also materials that can transform a simple book into a high-quality artistic product. Due to its unique properties, leather still remains the first-choice material in the case of art and archival bindings. However, the long-term durability of modern leather is not known since there is little commercial interest in long periods of durability and the market of leather for art, design and archival purposes is very small. It is worth noting that deterioration is influenced by the manufacturing technology, and especially by the chemical ingredients used in the various steps of leather making, from dehairing to tanning and finishing. It is therefore very likely that modern and contemporary artworks made of/with modern leather undergo faster degradation than ancient and medieval artworks. Thus, leather finishing is very important for both artistic and sustainable points of view. In fact, finishes with special effects such as antique, bicolour, printed, cracked, waxy are highly sought for vegetable tanned leather used for artistic and luxury bookbinding, archival bookbinding and restoration purposes. The evolving leather finishing technology of chrome-free leather (i.e. vegetable tanned leather) has enabled us to protect and improve the quality, look and feel of leather and to make it suitable for contemporary art bindery.

The Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows in the world, with numerous audiences since it has been translated into many languages. Like any other such show, the reactions to it function like mirrors of contemporary themes and obsessions. As with most aspects of culture today, ideologues of all types – Marxists, conservatives, traditionalists, Critical Race Theory activists, intersectionalists, feminists, and others – always try to use such widely popular shows to illustrate their ideas and push their agendas. Some aspects of Songs of Ice and Fire have triggered debates on the issue of its characters as being not diverse enough, and thus showing how George R. R. Martin wrote a rather non-progressive book. This paper focuses on the names the author chose for his characters, and argues that the choice of names in the show is due to a wish of the author to evoke important world cultures, to have a sonority that matches the characters’ personalities, and to be both archaic and memorable. I have called such a view a non-ideological and symbolic one, and I think that viewers identify with the characters in the film due to their likes and dislikes, and not according to any kind of ideological claims. Nevertheless, these names can also be considered to be a good illustration of diversity – of ethnic, cultural, and racial background. For such a demonstration the study concentrates on the names of a few of the main characters, trying to come up with possible etymologies (as we know that Martin looked into such names of Medieval England) which are correct from a historical linguistic point of view, but which also can be interpreted as symbolic and have a rich connotation within the literary text.
