Muhammad Hafeez Khan occupies a prominent position in Urdu literature of the 21st century. He is a novelist, fiction writer, playwright, columnist, researcher, critic and poet at the same time. About thirty of his books have been published, including four novels; Adh Adhore Log, Kirknath, Mantara and Anwasi have been published. He has effectively portrayed the social and family life of the elite in the present era where the psychology of women and the tension of their family life can be clearly seen. Family life basically means married life of husband and wife. Family life constitutes a family, which is the basis of the social system. This small organization formed by husband and wife and children is the biggest link in the cultural life of man. This article discusses the family life in Mohammad Hafeez Khan's novel "Adh Adhore Log".

The relationships among age, sex, marital status and suicidal behaviour in Australia and Hong Kong showed disparity in age-specific suicide rates among the four marital status groups, never married, married, widowed and divorced, for both sexes in the two locations. Examining the coefficients of preservation suggested the coefficient for never married to married in all cases was larger than 1, except for the groups of teenagers aged 15–19 years for both sexes and of elderly women aged 60 years or over in Hong Kong. The widowed or divorced groups have lower suicide rates than the married women among the elderly in Hong Kong. Hong Kong women seem not to have been benefited in marriage as much as men. Responsibility and workload in married life rather than low social status are the likely reasons for the relative high female suicide rate in Hong Kong. Possible cultural and environmental factors which are somewhat speculative (yet to be confirmed) are discussed.

A causal-comparative research design was employed to analyze the number of years of formal education completed by individuals publicly announcing their marriage or engagement to marry. For the majority of couples, men and women had equivalent years of formal education completed. Among the remainder of couples, women more often than men had completed more years of formal education. Over-all, more men than women had completed no postsecondary education, but more men than women had completed an associate's degree and more men than women had completed an advanced degree. Far more women than men had completed a bachelor's degree.

Sex differences in MBA careers were investigated to test three hypotheses: (1) men will advance in management more than women, (2) women will show more emotional reaction to career stress than men, (3) single women will progress more equally to single men than will be true for married women compared to married men. All three of the hypotheses were supported. Men earned more. In 1990 Kazal-Thresher found starting sex segregation by industry and occupation to explain some differences in earnings. Men worked longer hours, had more stable employment, achieved a general manager position more frequently, and had higher job satisfaction than women. Women, especially married women, expressed more frustration about careers than did men. Single women were not significantly different from single men in earnings, hours of work, stability of employment, and job satisfaction. Single women did not achieve a position as general manager as frequently as did single men.

Social support has been shown to lessen the negative effects of life stress on psychological and physical health. The stress buffering model and the main effects model of social support were compared using two samples of women over the age of 50 who were either married or recently widowed. These two groups represent low and high uncontrollable major life stress respectively. Other life stress events were also taken into account. Measures assessed current level of life stress, perceived social support, satisfaction with social support, and psychological symptomatology. Results using overall psychological health as the dependent variable support the main effects model.

This qualitative, interpretive research sought to elicit explanations for certain contradictions and choices in the lives of four married women who were autonomous and assertive in their careers, yet non-assertive and compliant in their married lives. Such contradictions appeared both in their projected stories and semi-structured interviews. It had been expected that these projected stories would reveal autonomy and assertiveness, in line with the white, middle-class, feminist values of the subjects, but they had not. Explanations for these apparent contradictions were attributed to the effects of being children of alcoholic fathers. While the subjects' socialisation and vulnerability to family ideology provided certain explanations for the presence of such contradictions, an object relations account of the unconscious need to resurrect an ideal father and repair the generic family provided a more probable explanation,and accounted for their traditional gender role behaviour as ideal wives in spite of their non-traditional, feminist behaviour outside of marriage.

The aims of the present study are to examine the traumatic effects of EMI on the offended partners as well as to find out the predictors (coping, resources, and forgiveness) of the severity of PTSD. The participants of the study consisted of 189 married women who had continued their marriage after discovery of partners&rsquo
EMI. EMI was assessed with one item measure with the six-point continuum starting from &ldquo
entirely sexual&rdquo
to &ldquo
entirely emotional&rdquo
involvement. The instruments of the study: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale-Self Report (PSS-SR), Ways of Coping Inventory (WCI), The Conservation of Resources Evaluation (COR-E), and Forgiveness Inventory (FI: its reliability and validity study was completed for the present study). Although EMI is a traumatic event that was not consist with the DSM-IV, the results of the present study revealed that 34.4% of participants completed the whole DSM-IV criteria for PTSD. More specifically, the rates of participants who met the criteria were: 50.7% A (stressor), 97.9% B (intrusive recollection), 85.2% C (avoidant/numbing), 91.0% D (hyper-arousal), 93.1% E (duration), 85.7% F (functional significance). In addition, the results of the present study showed: Coping
problem-focused group had lower PTSD than emotion-focused coping groups, Resource
a resource loss group had higher PTSD than resource gain group, and Forgiveness
stage I-impact group showed the highest PTSD whereas the stage III-recovery group showed the lowest PTSD. Furthermore, the final model of regression analyses revealed the predictors of PTSD total symptom severity as emotion-focused coping, resource gain, and stage I-impact, and these variables explained 46 % of the total variance. The results were discussed in accordance with the relevant literature.

She married Carl Friedan soon thereafter and had three children, Emily, Daniel, and Jonathan.

After a year at DePauw University in Indiana, Margaret Mead transferred to Barnard College in New York City in 1920. There, her chief mentor was anthropologist Ruth Benedict. Mead earned two degrees at Columbia, an M.A. in psychology (1924) and a Ph.D. in anthropology (1929). She married sociologist Luther Cressman in 1923.

Chapter five revisits many of the novels featured earlier—including Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Shirley, and Villette; Collins’s The Woman in White and No Name; Eliot’s Felix Holt; and Gaskell’s North and South—to uncover the largely unarticulated gendered assumptions that inform their constructions of status. Negative assertions of value focused on birth, wealth, force, and fact had tangible benefits for middle-class men’s status, which was, itself, predicated upon a fifth repudiation to be made by contemporary middle-class women. Chapter five argues that women’s legitimacy in the period marked by the mid-century “surplus women” crisis, widespread opposition to the Contagious Diseases Acts (1864, 1866, 1869), the passage of the Married Women’s Property Act (1870), and the formation of the National Society for Women’s Suffrage (1872) rested upon women’s rejection of claims to equal public authority. Focusing at length upon Charlotte Yonge’s The Clever Woman of the Family (1865), this chapter reveals how, in order to legitimate the middle-class perspective of her titular “clever woman,” Rachel Curtis, Yonge studiously strips her of any claims to masculine authority; this anti-feminist pattern, I assert, is perceptible even in novels with very different ideological investments.

Abstract In the early years of the Terri Schiavo case, there was little to distinguish it from earlier cases that had made their way into courts across the country. The issue of tube feeding patients in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) had already been addressed by a number of state courts, including Florida’s Supreme Court. The tube feeding issue was also at the center of the U.S. Supreme Court case involving Nancy Cruzan. Indeed, the Schiavo case mirrored the Cruzan case in many respects. Both cases involved young married women who suffered anoxic encephalopathy; both were left in a PVS; neither had an advance directive; and both cases involved deciding whether to discontinue tube feeding. In addition, both women came from Catholic families, and both had parents who were actively involved in their legal cases. The only difference seems to have been that Nancy Cruzan’s parents fought to have their daughter’s feeding tube removed, while Terri Schiavo’s parents struggled to keep their daughter’s tube in place.

Abstract Chapter 3 focuses on the property problems of four unmarried female characters. Alongside Anthony Trollope’s general sympathy for women’s legal position, his acknowledgment of their financial capabilities, and his unusual tendency to depict wealthy female characters, these novels’ unusually punitive plotlines suggest the threat that single women’s independent economic actions might pose to established family structures and financial traditions. Whether these women are condemned as “blood-sucking harpies” for being “generous as the sun,” their greed and generosity present equal dangers to these novels’ social worlds because they obstruct customary forms of property transmission. By challenging principles of inheritance and heterosexual exchange, injuring the very families they claim to help, and creating unacceptable burdens for their male kin, these characters underscore contemporary fears and fantasies about the intrafamilial stakes of women’s financial choices and also showcase the contested roles of female custodians and creditors that became salient during a time of increased agitation for married women’s property rights.

This chapter traces the process of who arranged marriages and how they were planned, with particular attention to the role of parents and kin, kings and lords, and initiatives of the couples themselves. In the period under discussion, marital arrangements were made by parents, kin, and lords with minimal input from the couple. In fact, the legality of marriage was subject to parental consent, not the couple’s. In the course of the eleventh and twelfth centuries evidence emerged that suggests a development in thinking amongst the laity and clergy about what established a valid union. In narrative sources, such as chronicles, hagiography, and fiction, demands of young men and women for self-determination with respect to marriage were recorded. There seems to have been a gendered aspect to these emerging voices with more women than men, mostly from elite or well-to-do backgrounds, demanding a say in the choice of marriage partner.

Despite an increase in interracial or mixed marriages (intermarriages) globally, the experiences of couples in such marriages are generally under-researched, particularly within psychology. Using a cultural psychological framework and qualitative methods, this paper studies the psychosocial experiences of couples in intermarriages. It focuses on four South Asians in ethnically intermarriages in two settings: two Indian-origin men married to native Danish women in Denmark, and two Indian-origin women married to Euro-American men in Canada. Data from in-depth interviews were subjected to a thematic analysis yielding an array of themes, of which this paper presents the two most dominant themes across the two contexts: ‘transnationalism’ and ‘racialized experiences in social situations’. The results demonstrate that the participants lived transnational lives to varying degrees depending on their gender, socio-economic status and age, which in turn intersected with variables such as the nature of the transnational relationships they were attempting to sustain, and their own motivations and agency in maintaining these ties. While in some cases participants maintained a high level of contact with India through visits and digital technology, others kept up limited ongoing contact with the country of origin. Furthermore, varying racialized experiences emerged from the narratives, with differences in how these experiences were interpreted. While some participants recognized them as racial discrimination, others chose to rationalize these experiences in various ways. After offering an account of these results, the paper reflects briefly on the implications of these findings.
