Public broadcasting in Australia has been under sustained attack for around 18-years now, both politically and through reduced funding. Although the Fraser Government (1975-1983) enacted legislation converting the ABC from the old broadcasting commission into a corporation (with its own borrowing and corporate treasury powers), the then Malcolm/Fraser/Doug/Anthony Liberal/National Coalition Government did not seem to hold more than the usual superficial grudges about our current affairs programmes' treatment of some of their practitioners.

At the April 1977 Premiers' Conference Malcolm Fraser secured unanimous agreement from the premiers to call for a voluntary three-month freeze of wages and prices. The freeze was never implemented. It offrcially ended in May when the Arbitration Commission awarded a national wage case increase of 1.9 per cent in line with its wage indexation principles. This paper examines the economic and political context in which the Premiers' Conference took place, the interactions between the federal government and unions—particularly the role played by ACTU President Bob Hawke—and the Arbitration Commission's reasons for rejecting the wages side of the freeze.

A series of nearly two dozen ‘Theatre Checklists’ appeared as supplements to the old series of Theatre Quarterly, recording biographical, performance, and bibliographical information in accessible form about a wide range of mainly living playwrights. The format was subsequently extended by Simon Trussler for the ‘Writers on File’ series he now edits for Methuen London, of which the first six titles have recently appeared. However, it was felt that the former style of checklist would still provide a valuable source of information for writers not scheduled for early inclusion in the new series, expecially when this complemented other forms of documentation in the journal: and this first ‘NTQ Checklist’ on the work of John McGrath thus appears alongside Tony Mitchell's interview with the playwright. Its compiler, Malcolm Page, teaches in the English Department of Simon Fraser University, British Columbia. Besides contributing several of the earlier series of ‘Theatre Checklists’. Malcolm Page has published widely in the field of modern British drama: his study of John Arden appeared last year from Twayne, and his volume on Arden was among the first of the ‘Writers on File’ from Methuen.

The two fundamental questions addressed in this thesis are 1) what are the characteristics that are associated with an Australian federal parliamentarian becoming a cabinet minister, and 2) how do these characteristics help a parliamentarian become a cabinet minister? I examine the standard representational and institutional explanations for cabinet appointment decisions such as geography, party/faction, gender and house (Senate vs House of Representatives) and find they do not account for more than 25% of cabinet appointments. I therefore turn to individual characteristics of cabinet ministers. I use education, linguistic/cognitive style, and biographical data to develop a classification model. Using data mining, I isolate three characteristics that explain a high proportion of the appointments to cabinet over the period under examination. These variables are: i) having a legal qualification: ii) entering parliament at an early age: and iii) using abstract language. These three variables explain approximately 78% of cabinet appointments over the period under investigation. I argue that these variables are associated with cabinet appointment because they tap into a particular set of cognitive and behavioural characteristics that are beneficial in demonstrating cabinet potential. An important insight from the analysis is that, in selecting parliamentarians to serve in cabinet, personal factors are more important than representational factors.

This chapter contextualizes Malcolm X’s interventions about black feelings in the contemporary psychological literatures that framed and circulated about blackness to understand how new black psychology informed Malcolm’s emotional and rhetorical repertoire. Then, in excavating Malcolm’s performances of black rage as an easily identifiable feeling and an intended goal of his rhetorical corpus, Corrigan argues that Malcolm’s psychological strategy articulated what she calls “American Negritude.” Marrying black psychology to the work of African and Caribbean intellectuals theorizing postcolonial black subjectivity, Malcolm’s rhetorical skills hinged on his ability to resituate black political and social consciousness around black pride and disidentification from whites. Malcolm’s American Negritude, particularly as it embraced rage, was at odds with the affective orientation and the racial liberalism of the integrationists and created both tension and opportunity for a global blackness. Still, while Malcolm reconceptualized feeling and being black, his enactment of black rage was often confused with hatred, which fueled white opposition to Malcolm and the NOI and fed white fragility in the early 1960s. Malcolm’s critique of black loyalty to white civil religion hinged on his relentless exposure of faulty black identifications, which he saw as a form of modern slavery.

Courtship, birth control, and the pressures to build a patriarchal black nation highlight why some women engaged in trumping patriarchy, in the service of supporting nationhood goals.

Abstract This chapter examines the arrangement history of Brahms’s Serious Songs (Vier ernste Gesänge, Op. 121), considering ways in which orchestral adaptations interact with received scholarly and popular understandings of Brahms’s revered late songs. The two versions used as case studies are Malcolm Sargent’s orchestration of 1944, which became intertwined in its early reception with perceived biographical parallels between Brahms’s situation, at the time he composed Op. 121, and Sargent’s at the time of his orchestration; and Detlev Glanert’s framed orchestration of 2004–2005 (Vier Präludien und ernste Gesänge), which gently reimagines the music-historical context of Brahms’s songs through four added preludes and a postlude. The investigation demonstrates that attention to arrangements and compositional engagements of source works alongside broader reception-historical trends can contribute significantly to a more holistic understanding of how musical meanings accumulate over time.

As Web 2.0 surfaces as the latest trendy phrase in education and technology discussions, it is imperative that instructors not get caught up in the glamour of the latest technology and loose sight of the required andragogical underpinnings necessary for effective and efficient teaching and learning. This chapter will begin by exploring the major theories and theorists in the field of adult education and the meshing of these theories with technology applications in higher education and global business venues. While Malcolm Knowles is credited with popularizing adult learning theory in the 1970’s, Stephen Brookfield, Jack Mezirow, Maxine Greene and Knud Illeris are among those who have moved the field forward over the past decades. Along with this progression in theory, the use of technology has escalated in popularity creating a need to frame its application in the foundational principles of adult education; an “Andragogy 2.0” focus is required. This chapter will expand on this theoretical base by offering short case studies that are linked to the theories as examples of innovative strategic approaches in the use of technology in adult teaching and learning.

Persistence may be defined as the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people, or firm or obstinate continuation of advocacy despite difficulty.1 The first definition implies a long-term commitment to a program. It also implies seeing a project through and seeking opportunities to connect others when the time is right. The term “stickiness factor” from Malcom Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, has been brought into the global health discussion by Danielle Laraque-Arena, MD, FAAP, in her presidential speech at the 50th anniversary of the Academic Pediatric Association.2,3 The stickiness factor describes a desire to see programs through to sustainability with a more positive, fanciful lightness, not dogged determination like a bulldozer. As children and youth are given the tools to take ownership of their future with persistence and confidence, there may be no turning back. The fierce determination of community health professionals to ensure adequate, reliable, culturally appropriate, and sustainable programs and policies has come, in part, in the United States from the growth of support for such programs from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This chapter will briefly follow through the evolving trends and many key concepts as they helped to frame and guide the work of pediatricians and other health care professionals working with communities in the United States and overseas. Several key concepts that helped to support this effort were taken up by the AAP, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, child-friendly places, concepts of equity and social justice, the Community Access to Child Health program, asset-based community development, the Anne E. Dyson Child Advocacy Award, and the Community Pediatrics Training Initiative, along with the requirement that residents have experiences and opportunities outside the hospital to work with community-based organizations and to learn principals of public health and service learning. The need for persistence will be shown throughout. All these concepts translate easily to overseas work, as we will show with 4 examples. The shared vision of seeking educational successes for all children who can grow up with knowledge of their own languages and stories is taking root across all borders. We are seeing in various countries the importance of spending time with a parent, teacher, or mentor starting at birth surrounded with love and words. The emphasis on the home language spoken freely around the newborn may perhaps mitigate a world fraught with violence, prejudice, and addiction, both in the family and community and in the world at large.
