We present a brief review of the combined pairing mechanism mediated by phonons and lochons (local charged bosons) for the high temperature superconducting materials (mainly cuprates). The phonon contribution (λ p ) being weak, the lochon part (λl) dominates to give higher critical temperatures (T c ). The combined mechanism along with the variation of λl with carrier concentration (x c ) gives the right variation of T c and the oxygen isotope exponent on doping. The superconducting gap Δ(0) at T = 0, its ratio with T c , the condensation energy, gap anisotropy, pseudogap, etc. are also discussed. With reasonable agreement with available experimental data, the combined mechanism emerges as a strong contender for an acceptable model for oxide superconducting materials.

Objective: We hypothesized that subcutaneous tunnelling will be more efficacious in preventing epidural catheter migration in the postoperative period. To compare three different fixation techniques for migration of epidural catheter in the postoperative period. Methods: Patients undergoing elective surgery with planned postoperative analgesia with lumbar epidural were included. They were divided into 3 groups based on catheter fixation – Group I: transparent adhesive dressing tape, Group II: fixator device (Locklt Plus® ) and Group III: catheter subcutaneously tunnelled vertically. The catheter mark was noted during insertion and on removal at the end of second day. The primary outcome measure was epidural catheter migration; the secondary outcome measures were complications and patient satisfaction scores. Results: Of the 170 patients recruited, 150 patients were included. The Likelihood Ratio (LR) of migration of group I in comparison to group II was 13.28 (p<0.001) while with group III was 7.06 (p=0.007). There was no significant difference between groups II and III (LR 1.12, p=0.29). The satisfaction scores were comparable among Groups II and III. There was no difference in complications among groups. Conclusion: Epidural migration is significantly reduced by both tunnelling and Lockit plus® methods in comparison to a transparent adhesive dressing in patients on continuous lumbar epidural analgesia in the first two postoperative days. The subcutaneous tunnelling method is as safe in terms of migration as the LockIt plus® method of fixation. This paper proposes a novel peer-to-peer communication framework to implement geographical location oriented networks, called G-LocON. Location-based services have been gaining in popularity, as proven by ridesharing and mobile games. Although these services have to construct geolocation oriented networks based on their users’ geographical locations, they completely rely on client/server models to communicate with neighboring terminals. G-LocON provides geolocation oriented device-to-device communication only with the current wireless technologies, such as LTE and Wi-Fi, cooperating with the global positioning system and peer-to-peer overlay networking. G-LocON will serve as a type of a mobile ad-hoc network in which devices located within the focusing area are capable of communicating directly. We developed a primitive Android application to implement the GLocON framework. Evaluation of the solution’s performance has verified the usefulness of the proposed system that offers an admissive transmission delay. Moreover, to confirm the application-related potential of the G-LocON framework, we also show a practical map software in which all neighboring mobile devices present in the focusing area are displayed.

The conventional standard for object detection uses a bounding box to represent each individual object instance. However, it is not practical in the industry-relevant applications in the context of warehouses due to severe occlusions among groups of instances of the same categories. In this paper, we propose a new task, i.e., simultaneously object localization and counting, abbreviated as Locount, which requires algorithms to localize groups of objects of interest with the number of instances. However, there does not exist a dataset or benchmark designed for such a task. To this end, we collect a large-scale object localization and counting dataset with rich annotations in retail stores, which consists of 50,394 images with more than 1.9 million object instances in 140 categories. Together with this dataset, we provide a new evaluation protocol and divide the training and testing subsets to fairly evaluate the performance of algorithms for Locount, developing a new benchmark for the Locount task. Moreover, we present a cascaded localization and counting network as a strong baseline, which gradually classifies and regresses the bounding boxes of objects with the predicted numbers of instances enclosed in the bounding boxes, trained in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experiments are conducted on the proposed dataset to demonstrate its significance and the analysis is provided to indicate future directions. AbstractIn this study, the anti-loosening characteristics of a precision flank-locking locknut fabricated under various machining processes and tested in different dynamic environments were investigated. The control parameters considered include the tightening torque and thread pitch of the set screw, machining process on the end plane of locknut, and vibration amplitude and frequency of dynamic loading in service, etc. Their sensitivities on the axial force ratio and anti-loosening ratio of the locknut were evaluated using Taguchi method. It was found that the pretension of locknut, the tightening torque and the pitch of set screw, and the machining process of the nut's end plane were the significant control parameters for the anti-loosening performance of the locknut. Moreover, the results of experimental measurements were employed in the regression fit on the performance of the locknut. The regression model was able to predict the anti-loosening ratio with 4.42% average error comparing with the measurements. Furthermore, the optimized design of the locknut through the Taguchi method was able to increase the axial force ratio and anti-loosening ratio by 20.4% and 16.8%, respectively, comparing with standard locknut.

Purpose – The analysis of the optimal production and preventive maintenance with lockout/tagout planning problem for a manufacturing system is presented in this paper. The considered manufacturing system consists of two non-identical machines in passive redundancy producing one type of part. These machines are subject to random breakdowns and repairs. The purpose of this paper is to minimize production, inventory, backlog and maintenance costs over an infinite planning horizon; in addition, it aims to verify the influence of human reliability on the inventory levels for illustrating the importance of human error during the maintenance and lockout/tagout activities. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is different compared to other research projects on preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout. The influence of human error on lockout/tagout as well as on preventive maintenance activities are presented in this paper. The preventive maintenance policy depends on the machine age. For the considered manufacturing system the optimality conditions are provided, and numerical methods are used to obtain machine age-dependent optimal control policies (production and preventive maintenance rates with lockout/tagout). Numerical examples and sensitivity analysis are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed approach. The system capacity is described by a finite-state Markov chain. Findings – The proposed model taking into account the preventive maintenance activities with lockout/tagout and human error jointly, instead of taking into account separately. It verifies the influence of human error during preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout activities on the optimal safety stock levels using an extension of the hedging point structure. Practical implications – The model proposed in this paper might be extended to manufacturing systems, but a number of conditions must be met to make effective use of it. Originality/value – The originality of this paper is to consider the preventive maintenance activities with lockout/tagout and human error simultaneously. The control policy is obtained in order to find the solution for the considered manufacturing system. This paper also brings a new vision on the importance of human reliability during preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout activities.

Background After a total hip arthroplasty (THA), standing and walking balance are greatly affected in the early stages of recovery, so it is important to increase the weight-bearing amount (WBA) on the operated side. Sometimes, traditional treatments may not be enough to improve WBA and weight-bearing ratio (WBR) on the operated side in a satisfactory way. To solve this problem, we came up with a new weight-shifting-based robot control system called LOCOBOT. This system can control a spherical robot on a floor by changing the center of pressure (COP) on a force-sensing board in rehabilitation after THA. The goal of this study was to find out how rehabilitation with the LOCOBOT affects the WBR and balance in a static standing position in patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis (OA) who had a primary uncemented THA. Methods This randomized controlled trial included 20 patients diagnosed with Kellgren–Lawrence (K–L) grade 3 or 4 hip OA on the operative side and K–L grade 0 normal hip on the nonoperative side. We used the minimization method for allocation and randomly assigned patients to either the LOCOBOT group or the control group. As a result, 10 patient seach were randomly assigned to the LOCOBOT and control groups. Both groups received 40 min of rehabilitation treatment. Out of the 40 min, the LOCOBOT group underwent treatment for 10 min with LOCOBOT. The control group performed COP-controlled exercises on a flat floor instead of using LOCOBOT for 10 of the 40 min. All theoutcome measures were performed pre-THA and 11.9 ± 1.6 days after THA (12 days after THA). The primary outcome measure included WBR in the static standing position. Results After12 days of THA, the LOCOBOT group exhibited significantly higher mean WBR and WBA (operated side) values than the control group. Furthermore, the LOCOBOT group exhibited significantly lower mean WBA (non-operated side) and outer diameter area (ODA) values than the control group. From pre-THA to 12 days after THA, the LOCOBOT group exhibited a significant improvement in mean WBR and WBA (operated side). Moreover, the mean WBA (non-operated side) and ODA significantly decreased. From pre-THA to 12 days after THA, the control group showed a significant increase in total trajectory length and ODA. Conclusions The most important finding of this study was that patients were able to perform the LOCOBOT exercise as early as the second day after THA, and that WBR and ODA significantly improved by the 12th day after THA. This result demonstrated that the LOCOBOT effectively improves WBR in a short period of time after THA and is a valuable system for enhancing balance ability. This expedites the acquisition of independence in activities of daily living after THA and may contribute to optimizing the effectiveness of medical care.

Light is an important environmental signal that governs plant growth, development, and metabolism. Constitutive photomorphogenic 1 (COP1) is a light signaling component that plays a vital role in plant light responses. We isolated the COP1 gene (LoCOP1) from the petals of Lilium ‘Siberia’ and investigated its function. The LoCOP1 protein was found to be the most similar to Apostasia shenzhenica COP1. LoCOP1 was found to be an important factor located in the nucleus and played a negative regulatory role in floral scent production and emission using the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) approach. The yeast two-hybrid, β-galactosidase, and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assays revealed that LoCOP1 interacts with LoMYB1 and LoMYB3. Furthermore, light modified both the subcellular distribution of LoCOP1 and its interactions with LoMYB1 and MYB3 in onion cells. The findings highlighted an important regulatory mechanism in the light signaling system that governs scent emission in Lilium ‘Siberia’ by the ubiquitination and degradation of transcription factors via the proteasome pathway.

Failure to apply lockout procedures for the control of hazardous energies is one of the main causes of machinery-related fatal and serious injuries in North America. The absence of audits of lockout or the lack of proper tools for auditing lockout is prevalent, and thus the application of lockout is often not fully in compliance with standards and regulations. A self-audit tool for the application of lockout procedures for machinery was developed on the basis of the current standards and regulations, and previous research. The tool was then tested for content validity through experts’ opinions and qualitative feedback from six organizations in the province of Quebec in Canada. The developed audit tool defines the actual procedures to audit, as well as the surrounding conditions that are needed and the prerequisites based on standards, regulations, and findings from previous research. The results showed that the tool displayed a high content validity index and demonstrated that the usability, applicability, and comprehensiveness of the tool were adequate. This self-audit tool helps organizations monitor the application of lockout on machinery for the safety of workers and to ensure that the actual practice of controlling hazardous energy is in compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

This study investigated the wear characteristics and anti-loosening characteristics of flank lock type precision locknut in the dynamic percussion vibration test. The experiment was conducted by using horizontal realistic dynamic percussion vibration test machine. The objective is to simulate the loosening condition of the locknut which was assembled in ball screw and machine tool spindle. Through this study, the wear resistance and anti-loosening characteristics of the precision locknut under the dynamic test were investigated by closely observing the roughness, flatness and tooth angle, seat surface and surface morphology before and after the test. The test results were used to calculate axial force ratio and anti-loosening ratio to understand the wear properties and anti-loosening properties of precision locknut under the dynamic conditions.

Locust swarms cause famine and hunger in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa as they travel across croplands and eat vegetation. Current models start with biological properties of locusts and analyze the macroscopic behavior of the system. These models exhibit the desired migratory behavior, but do so with too many parameters. To account for this, a new model, the Alignment and Intermittent Motion (AIM) model, is derived with minimal assumptions. AIM is constructed with regards to locust biology, allowing it to elicit biologically correct locust behavior: the most noteworthy being the fingering of hopper bands. A Particle-in-Cell method is used to optimize simulations, allowing for trials of up to 106 particles over reasonable timescales. We analyze the shapes of these swarms, note the similarities between simulations of large and small swarms, and propose possible methods for analyzing simulation metrics.

The nervous systems of animals evolved to exert dynamic control of behavior in response to the needs of the animal and changing signals from the environment. To understand the mechanisms of dynamic control, we need a means of predicting how individual neural and body elements will interact to produce the performance of the entire system. We have developed a neuromechanical application named AnimatLab that addresses this problem through simulation. A computational model of a body and nervous system can be constructed from simple components and situated in a virtual world for testing. Simulations and live experiments were used to investigate questions about locust jumping. The neural circuitry and biomechanics of kicking in locusts have been extensively studied. It has been hypothesized that the same neural circuit and biomechanics governed both behaviors, but this hypothesis was not testable with current technology. We built a neuromechanical model to test this and to gain a better understanding of the role of the semi-lunar process (SLP) in jump dynamics. The SLP are bands of cuticle that store energy for use during jumping. The results of the model were compared to a variety of published data and were similar. The SLP significantly increased jump distance, power, total energy, and duration of the jump impulse. Locust can jump precisely to a target, but also exhibit tumbling. We proposed two mechanisms for controlling tumbling during the jump. The first was that locusts adjust the pitch of their body prior to the jump to move the center of mass closer to the thrust vector. The second was that contraction of the abdominal muscles during the jump produced torques that countered the torque due to thrust. There was a strong correlation relating increased pitch and takeoff angle. In simulations there was an optimal pitch-takeoff combination that minimized tumbling that was similar to the live data. The direction and magnitude of tumbling could be controlled by adjusting abdominal tension. Tumbling also influenced jump elevation. Neuromechanical simulation addressed problems that would be difficult to examine using traditional physiological approaches. It is a powerful tool for understanding the neural basis of behavior.

To evaluate the utility of insect monitoring radar (IMR) technology for long-term monitoring of insect migration, a mini-network of two IMR units in Bourke, NSW, and Thargomindah, Qld, and a base-station server in Canberra, ACT, was set up in eastern Australia. The IMR operated automatically every night under the control of a personal computer that also conducted data acquisition and processing. Digitisation of radar signals, their analysis (delimitation of echoes from background noise and adjoining echoes, followed by extraction of estimates for each target's speed, displacement direction, body alignment, radar cross-section, and wingbeat frequency and modulation pattern), and generation of observation summaries were implemented as a fully automated procedure. Wingbeat frequency was found to be retrievable from the IMR's rotary-beam signals, and this allowed each individual target to be characterised by its wingbeat as well as its size and shape. By drawing on ancillary information from the Australian Plague Locust Commission's database of field survey and light trap records, the echo characters indicative of Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera (Walker), were identified. Using these, about 140 nights with detectable plague locust migrations were identified for the Bourke IMR site during 1998 - 2001 and 31 nights for Thargomindah during 1999 - 2000. Analysis of these nights confirmed that C. terminifera migrates in association with disturbed weather, especially tropical troughs, in eastern Australia. Trajectory simulation based on IMR-derived displacement directions and flight speeds allowed the identification of population movements likely to reach favourable habitats and thus to develop rapidly and possibly cause a plague. The outbreak during 1999 - 2001 most likely originated from the southeastern agricultural belt after migrations and multiplications over several generations. The IMR observations demonstrated that C. terminifera migrates over long distances with the wind at night and indicated that it may have an orientation behaviour that prevents it from being taken too far into the arid inland, a trait that could be highly adaptive in this environment. The two IMRs were operational for more than 85% of scheduled time during the study period and provided a wealth of information of potential value for locust management and migration research

This thesis project was carried out at Volvo Car Corporation. It is based on an EU project called Locust in which a bio-inspired visual sensor system (the Locust sensor system) for automotive collision avoidance was developed. The Locust sensor system is designed to emulate the collision avoidance functionality of the Locust grasshopper, which is well-known for its extraordinary vision based collision avoidance ability, in particular with regard to its fast reaction times to perceived threats. Volvo Car Corporation is interested in the possibility of using the bio-inspired technology developed in the Locust project to improve its already existing collision avoidance systems. Pedestrian collision avoidance is of high interest, for which the properties of the Locust grasshopper are desirable.

The purpose of this thesis project is to develop two demonstrator vehicles to test the performance of the Locust sensor system, carry out the testing, and evaluate its usability for Volvo Car Corporation. The first vehicle is a scale 1:5 model car that was originally developed in a thesis project at KTH, and the second a full scale Volvo XC90.

It was found in the testing that the Locust sensor system is promising for pedestrian collision avoidance applications. The results for detecting other vehicles were also acceptable, but Volvo Car Corporation already has other collision avoidance systems with better performance in this regard. In general the test results were very good for speeds up to about 40 km/h. This indicates that the Locust sensor system would be most usable in a city driving environment, parking lot situations, and for driving in residential areas.

At the very core of the National Basketball Association’s labor negotiations between the owners and the players during the 2011 lockout was the league’s argument that its economic structure was broken. Owners contended that the NBA’s soft salary cap system, and the resulting payroll disparity, has put small-market franchises at a talent disadvantage and produced a league of haves and have-nots. To remedy this purported competitive balance problem, the owners demanded severe policy measures to decrease the pay dispersion among teams. However, the players union cautioned that these hardline provisions were merely an attempt to transfer wealth from players to owners. This charge warranted further analysis. Existing literature on this topic is either outdated or insufficient in scope. As such, using regression analysis, this thesis evaluated the league’s argument and determined to what extent the league’s soft salary cap system has contributed to its competitive imbalance.The empirical analysis of this thesis produced several meaningful conclusions. While the NBA has relative imbalance, it does not affect consumer demand for the regular season product. Moreover, while pay dispersion exists, additional salary expenditures only marginally add to a team’s winning percentage. There is no significant relationship between payroll disparity and competitive balance. Finally, with the escalating importance of media rights contracts and the historical appreciation of franchise valuation, the league overstated the financial distress of most of its small-market owners. Overall, the NBA and its owners used deceptive rhetoric and misleading economic policies to decrease player salaries, not to increase competitive balance, in a collusive effort to maximize profits and reassert its diminishing monopsony power in an increasingly star-driven league

Анотація:
The force response of the locust hind leg extensor muscle to input excitation pulses is modelled. Despite the processes behind muscle contraction being well established, no broadly valid method of modelling skeletal muscle exists. Studies that compare the merits of existing models are extremely scarce and researchers make various assumptions in order to simplify the complex, nonlinear behaviour of the muscle. Locusts provide an opportunity to develop a muscle model in a simpler system, that will still show similar properties to that of mammalian muscles. In developing a model previous work is considered, and complexity is introduced in the experimental conditions in stages. This meant a model could be built up in parts. This approach reduces the need for questionably valid assumptions. The main focus of this work is modelling activated isometric muscle. Experimental data was collected by stimulating the extensor muscle and measuring the force generated at the tibia. In the first instance the response to individual stimulus pulses is modelled. This is extended to develop a predictive model capable of estimating the isometric force response to general pulse train inputs. In developing the model, data was fit to existing models, and from this an improved isometric model developed. The effect of changing the isometric muscle length is considered. Commonly changing the muscle length is assumed to just scale the force response. This assumption is poor. The dynamics of the force response were found to be modifed by the change in muscle length, and the isometric model adapted to include this dependency. Results related to the non-isometric behaviour are also presented. Passive muscle is usually just modelled over the lengthening period, however, the whole stretch-shorten cycle is considered here. A model, adapted from the standard linear model, is developed to describe the passive force response.

Full Authority Digital Control systems are the premier control system. The applications are limitless (motorcycles to power plants and everything in between). Over the past 15 years, the US Navy has worked successfully with Woodward Governor Co. to develop and implement FADC LOCOPs for use in a number of applications including DDG and CG class ships gas turbine generators. The FADC LOCOPs provide closed loop control features as did the old analog control systems. But the FADC LOCOPs add the ease and speed of control improvements via software change, constant data monitoring/recording and network connectivity. The network connectivity advantage is still early in development; however this key feature of the control system opens up many doors. Distance support can be taken to an entirely new level via the network. Imagine a setup where if the control detects an abnormality…an email containing control system data gets sent to the blackberry of the In Service Engineering Agent (ISEA) so immediate action can be taken to maintain system reliability and reduce overall system cost. This future can help save money and avoid expensive catastrophic failure via condition based maintenance. In this future, it is possible that eventually the ISEA suggestions can be prompted right back to the FADC LOCOP so the sailors onboard can communicate with the ISEA via the FADC LOCOP. Essentially, every ship could have the ISEA (or an ISEA representative)onboard 24 hours a day seven days a week via FADC LOCOP communicating over a network. The system is not this evolved yet. However, several Navy Programs are working in conjunction towards a similar future including DDG Modernization and Integrated Condition Assessment System (ICAS) via Maintenance Engineering Library Server (MELS) and Integrated Performance Analysis Reports (IPAR). FADC LOCOPs are the foundation upon which these improvements rely to be implemented…thus the premier control system.

Анотація:
In search for plant protein and vitamins substitute, the African locust beans (Parkia biolobosa) have found very popular used for condiment, baby’s formulation diets and animal meals. The aim of this study was to produce biscuits from African locust beans pulps flour and wheat flour. The matured and ripped African locust beans pods purchased from Bauchi market. The pods were manually cleaned and milled. The wheat/locust bean pulp flour were mixed in the ratio; 100:0%, 90:10%, 80:20%, 70:30% and 60:40% respectively. The proximate composition of the biscuit samples were analyzed with standard methods. There was decrease in protein contents of the biscuits as African locust bean flour is added and increase in moisture content. This result revealed that African locust beans flour can be added up to 30% substitution level without altering quality characteristics and organloletic properties of the biscuits.
